About the Artist
Cold Duck Complex is a marriage of thoughtful hip-hop lyrics to jazz and funk music. Though the combination is not unheard of, it is a new beast here; placing the instruments on an equal plane with the voice pushes this fusion in a direction that few, if any, have taken before-bridging gaps between seriousness and humor, politics and play, at times showcasing more traditional hip-hop, other times focusing on more progressive and complex instrumentals.

Album Description
Our first CD, "You Come Too," is an exploration into the inner lives of kiddo's. We received an award for the International Song Writer's "People Voice" Award, accumulating the most votes in the award's history, and Children's Music Web Award for best song. We also just released the companion book to "You Come Too" as a tool for teachers and parents to support kids in learning and friendship-building. Kiddo Publishing is quickly expanding and inspiring more kiddos and adults every day.
Fueled by their real-life encounters with kids in schools, therapy environments and after school programs, these songs explore the universal themes of making good decisions, discovering ones' voice and celebrating the power of family and friendship.
Kiddo Publishing has spent the last year reaching over 30,000 kids, parents, teachers and therapists with this amazing music that inspires and empowers. The idea to make hip hop music for children grew out of the relationship one of the Figureheads' writers/lyricists had working as a therapist with a young girl with autism, and blossomed into an all-encompassing movement towards educating kids about their innate value.
This isn't your typical children's music. Kiddo hip hop is a well-produced, age-appropriate, positive oasis in a desert of MTV and FM radio. Hip hop music has become a universal language that spans gender, race and most relevantly, age. As musical influences grow they reach younger generations each day. The popularity of mainstream hip hop has skyrocketed in the past few years and the negative messages that much of it contains is slowly becoming more socially tolerable through desensitization. Children are bombarded with media content and messages that are inappropriate for their healthy development. The Figureheads create music for teachers, parents and kids of all ages that promote positive messages applicable to everyday life.

a gift to children AND their parents and teachers.......2007-02-01
We own both of the Figureheads' children's CDs (You Come Too and The Movement), and we have seen The Figureheads perform in a variety of venues to a variety of audiences. I'm still not sure who loves them more -- the kids or the grown-ups. And maybe that's one of the best things about their music. Kids listen and feel encouraged and empowered by songs like "Born for a Reason" and "Kiddo Anthem," so much that I've seen kids in wheelchairs "dance" to the music because it speaks to them specifically. Adults listen, and their hearts are touched by songs like "Born for a Reason" and "I Am Loved" so much that multigenerational churches and even the local Rotary group (with no children present) end up on their feet, either dancing, stretching, or giving a standing ovation. Music that touches such a diversity of hearts, and that brings those hearts together in unity, is definitely something out of the ordinary.
As a mom and developmental psychologist, I love what it does for kids and families. I love what it does for MY kids and MY family. It is definitely a CD worth owning!
This is a gift to your child.......2006-12-05
I work at a special needs school and I had the chance to hear the group perform today. Many are ADHD, in wheelchairs, have down syndrome, have other physical disabilities or just come from our inner city neighborhood. I was very moved when I saw how their music touched our children and had their bodies moving. They deliver such powerful messages through hip-hop and a rapping style of music that gets the kids attention and their bodies moving. They rap about how it's ok to be different or not be the smartest or be unique...how we are each special in our own way. During the assembly, they talked about their own lives and how they struggled in school too. They spoke of how they learned to use their talents and build on their strengths instead of giving up.
My own six year old has ADHD and I am now ordering the CD so that he can hear their important message as I want my son to know that he is special too. Do yourself and your child a favor, bless them with the Figureheads music. Their music and the message behind it is invaluable to ANY kid and definitely has a great beat to it!!!!

bill N co. have done it again.......2001-02-08
Well they've done it again. This album is beautiful. I was really wondering what we'd be hearing from the boys this time out. I've been a Blenderhead fan for quite awhile now. Got their first album the day it came out (i used to be quite the tooth and nail aficionado, pet the fish anyone? prime candidate is still one of my favorite albums). This one is very melodic, I've only had it for a few days but my favorites are "transatlantic solo flight" and "fort lewis gun club youth day". this is a perfect emo/just broke up with my girlfriend/wife album. keep it up guys. much love and respect and respect and respect from tulsa O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A, oklahoma? ok.

Astonishing.......2005-05-28
One day in 1988 I heard "Levitate Me" by the Pixies for the first time
A wan day in 1992 sent me through another portal with "Three Days" by Janes Addiction
Pavement, John Coltrane, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The White Stripes, it goes on and on...you know them...starts with a moment and surges on listening again and more into a wave that consumes you.
There seems to be a lot of talent around these days...thats good...but only one moment lately: COLD DUCK COMPLEX, NOV 2004.
The range, oh the range...from boozy jazz riffs to rock explosions that quite simply blow you away. This is the best album of ANY GENRE for the past 10 years. maybe longer.
Speechless.......2004-08-14
Cold Duck Complex, a jazz/hip-hop fusion band that is beyond any other jazz fusion combos you may have heard in the past. With an MC whose lyrics are more Voltaire than 50 Cent, and backed up by some of the best individual instrumentalists, Cold Duck Complex is less a band and more a breeding ground for some of the most profound, thought provoking music ever written. The album is a combination of intelligent poetry, beautiful music, and just good old fashion fun music. I love this album, and would recommend it to anyone, no matter what genre you normally float around, Cold Duck Complex is the type of music that attracts everyone. http://www.coldduckcomplex.com check out their website to get some FREE Live CDs, its the only way to actually understand what is Cold Duck Complex.

I Love the Figureheads! .......2007-02-01
I'm a Figurehead dancer. I listen to the music almost every day. It gets me up in the morning and gets me moving during the day. My favorite song is "Wall Pusher" from "You Come Too." You should buy their music because it's great to listen to at every time of the day.

Hip hop music that builds up insteading of tearing down - GREAT music for kids and teens!.......2007-02-01
Although I am not a hip-hop fan, I am definitely a fan of The Figureheads, especially the hip-hop music they've written for children and teens. "The Movement" is a great CD choice for tweens and teens -- cool and complex rhythms and lyrics, with messages that speak honestly about kids' personal and relationship challenges. Most important to me as a mom and developmental psychologist, the messages help point kids in the right direction in a pretty confusing world.
My 10 year old's favorite track is a song called "Just Right" that talks about how hard it is to feel like you're succeeding, especially when your natural gifts and abilities aren't abilities that are measured in school or by IQ tests. That song grabs him every time, and it opens him up to hear other important messages about letting his gifts shine, about making good choices, about persevering through hard times. When he listens to this CD, his confidence is boosted and his optimism soars.
We LOVE "The Movement" and we love the Figureheads first kid CD, "You Come Too" -- a CD with an award-winning, soul-moving song called "Born for a Reason" that celebrates EVERY kiddo, even those with special needs. I have yet to see a child or adult who isn't deeply moved and encouraged by that song. "The Movement" and "You Come Too" are both fantastic choices for kids and families who are looking for music with a positive message and hip sounds. You won't be disappointed!
