Album Details
Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.
Customer Reviews:
not enough Galway.......2003-10-02
There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.
Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03
I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

My favorite album. English church music at its finest........2005-10-06
Whether you have a couple dozen albums of English choral music or whether you're looking for an introduction to English choral music, this two CD collection is a must. Here you will find a wide selection of sacred favorites, from Gregorian chant to Ralph Vaughan Williams. It's a misnomer to call it "Anglican," since this would exclude (in addition to, of course, the pre-Reformation Latin hymns) the likes of Thomas Tallis and William Byrd -- both Catholics that kept to the ancient faith despite Elizabeth's (albeit relatively mild) persecutions. Tallis and Byrd set the standard in the 16th century for the distinctive "Englishness" (as opposed to Continental European) style of English choral music, with its soaring majesty yet somehow coupled with a subtle and sustained beauty (as opposed to the Continental ups and downs and often tiresome exaggerations). For those of us in the English-speaking world, this is our heritage. Let's treasure it. As for the recording itself, the mixing is superb. While listening, it's quite easy to imagine yourself in the beautiful King's College Chapel or perhaps heaven itself.
The grand tradition of English music.......2005-09-23
Recorded in the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a duo of discs dedicated to Music of the English Church previously issued as two separate discs, 'Hail, Gladdening Light', and its companion piece, 'Faire is the Heaven'. The discs here are straight copies of those discs; hence, if you have those already, there is no need to purchase this - on the other hand, if you do not have the other discs, this is a bargain.
--Music--
This is all unaccompanied music, sung in a cathedral chapel acoustically suited for such music. The first disc has four primary sections: Music of the Latin Rite; Music of the Reformation; Music of the Restoration; and Anglican Revival and the twentieth century. The most famous composers in English music history -- Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons -- combine with later masters such as Purcell, Stanford, Howells, Walton, Britten and Vaughan Williams to form a truly masterful collection. These are anthems, hymns and other liturgical pieces that have remained important in Anglican worship, and can be often heard in situ on Sundays around the world. However, the Cambridge Singers bring their special music talent to the task, producing a good standard bearer for music of the English Church.
On the second disc, there are six Latin motets, set by composers such as Taverner, Howells, Stanford, Vaughan Williams, Philips and Dering. Anthens and Introits include notables Tomkins and Purcell, and lesser-known composers such as Amner, Bairstow and Goss. Hymns span the range from old to modern, including a hymn by John Rutter himself. The disc ends with three prayer settings, including one by the underappreciated John Sheppard, and another from William Harris, whose hymn serves as the title to the companion disc. These anthems and hymns show a powerful range of music, yet show a consistent tone also that makes it rather distinctive of the music of the English church.
The group's power and grace is second to none, particularly when singing this kind of music in a place such as Ely Cathedral, arguably the most natural of settings possible.
--Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words of each anthem or hymn. The notes for each piece also includes brief biographical information of the composer, and unique information about each work, when particular composers are represented more than once. One thing conspicuously missing is much biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the most basic of information.
--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.
--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.
music of great beauty.......2005-04-24
Pop one of these CDs into your car stero, turn up the volume and feel yourself drift into a sublime peace. Can music manifest the existence of God?
Excellent Selection, Excellent Performance.......2004-07-28
This two-CD compilation by the Cambridge Singers is truly very good. The repertoire is very diverse and only the best representations of composers and time periods are performed. ALthough most of the pieces were not written with a mixed choir in mind, the Cambridge Singers sing it so well you would not have had any idea. Their performances are careful and exquisite.
Best all-in-one English music CD ever.......2004-04-20
This is a re-release, as one set, of two of my favorite CDs ever: "Faire is the Heaven" and "Hail Gladdening Light" by the Cambridge singers. This is a fabulous compilation of everyone's favorite works from the English Cathedral tradition, all the way from Taverner (16th century) to Tavener (21st century). The selection of works is great and touches all the most important genres. The performance is exquisite, elegant, faultless. The Cambridge Singers have a softer, less edgy sound than the Tallis Scholars, and are more expressive, which may make them easier for some people to listen to, especially for the more recent works. They are no less musical. The Parsons Ave Maria alone brings one to tears. If you want an introduction to English church music, this is the CD to start with. Also makes a great gift, if you already love this music and want to introduce someone else to it.

Elvis's Soundtracks.......2007-04-01
The Jailhouse Rock/Love Me Tender CD represents an intelligent way for RCA to re-release Elvis's music. It features all the songs from both movies, plus bonus tracks that include movie versions of some songs, plus some alternate takes. The Jailhouse Rock songs are unassailable, with a line-up featuring the title track, "Treat Me Nice," "I Want To Be Free," "Don't Leave Me Now," "Young and Beautiful," and "(You're So Square)Baby I Don't Care"- not a dud in the bunch, thanks to the songwriting team of Leiber and Stoller. Elvis did not like the songs on Love Me Tender, save for the title track. However, "We're Gonna Move" is one of the great lost Elvis songs. This compilation proves that Elvis and movies, in and of itself, was not a bad thing.
If you can't find a partner, use a wooden chair.......2004-11-19
This CD features the complete original soundtrack of Jailhouse Rock, plus the Love Me Tender soundtrack. Since Jailhouse Rock featured six songs and Love Me Tender had four songs, at ten songs total that would make for a short CD. So, they included alternate versions of practically every song, and doubled the length of the CD. All of the Jailhouse Rock masters are great. The Jailhouse Rock movie versions are not quite as great, but they are still very good. See, the film shows Vince Everett's evolution as a singer, so in the songs from the beginning of the movie Elvis didn't sing with as much feeling as he usually did. That's why they recorded different verions of the songs for the movie and for records. As for the Love Me Tender soundtrack, the songs are a lot different from the ones Elvis usually recorded, since the movie took place during the Reconstruction period. As for the quality of the songs, "Love Me Tender" is great, of course. The rest of the songs are not that great, but are a lot of fun. Most of the songs are featured in both mono and stereo versions. The exception is the alternate version of "Let Me", which is Elvis' vocal track by itself. Interestingly, in this version you can really tell that Elvis has trouble sustaining the last long note in the song. I would recommend this CD, as well as anything else Elvis recorded in the 1950s.
4 1/2 Stars: Highly Recommended.......2004-01-08
'Jailhouse Rock' was not originally released as an LP although it contains some of Elvis's best, and hardest rocking, numbers (does Rock'n'Roll get any better than the great title track, as well as the wonderful "Treat Me Nice" and "You're So Square" - thank you Mr. Leiber and Mr. Stoller). 'Love Me Tender' likewise was not available on LP, but the songs are gentler, as predetermined by the non-electric, Civil War-era setting of the movie (although several of the songs are uptempo non-ballads, if technically not "rockers").
The attitude from Jailhouse Rock the movie (Elvis pretty much sneered his way through the film, and it's great) is carried over to the soundtrack. There are also some excellent, underrated ballads (to hear a great cover version of "Young and Beautiful," find Aaron Neville's live version, last seen on the hard-to-find import tribute 'The Last Temptation of Elvis').
The songs from 'Love Me Tender' (his first of many soundtrack recordings) do not fare as well, despite the well-known and heartfelt title track. They are certainly not bad, however, especially when compared to some of his later movie offerings.
The CD contains several previously unreleased tracks from both films, including alternate takes and stereo recordings. As with most of RCA's other Elvis soundtracks reissued in the 90's, usually as "2fers," the sound quality is excellent (unfortunately, many of these reissues are now out-of-print).
The 12-page booklet contains lots of information and great photos from the films and soundtrack recordings (the cover photo itself is one of the best of any Elvis album). In keeping with the deluxe packaging, the CD is a picture disc and there is a tray card photo of the cover.
2 soundtracks on 1 disc.......2000-12-23
This is a nicely packaged, technically excellent release of Elvis' songs from JAILHOUSE ROCK and LOVE ME TENDER. For the first, they have included both the original studio versions and the film versions of the songs. On the second we have the bonus of previously unavailable tracks (the solo version of "Let Me," and two other songs in stereo.) There is one goof in the liner notes in regards to the supporting cast of JAILHOUSE ROCK. It states that Dean Jones was well known for his role in the film TOM THUMB....that film actually starred Russ Tamblyn, not Jones.
The King from the King.......2000-11-12
I'll put it plainly and I won't get too complicated when I say that this is best from Mr. Presley.

A loving tribute to a father from his son.......2005-03-25
It has always been Andrej Szpilman's dream to have his father's songs published in the western world. As the executive producer of this cd, he has fulfilled that dream. Some of his father's songs recorded for the cd were composed during his times in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1941. Wendy Lands lovingly sings these songs with a beautiful heart-wrenching voice.
Hunt down the originals.......2005-01-20
happened to be living in Poland at the time of the release of Polanski's film 'The Pianist', and Polish Radio issued a commemorative boxed-set of archive recordings of Szpilman as pianist and composer. Unfortunately, this set does not seem to have been released outside Poland (though some of the piano tracks have been issued separately by Sony). One of the discs is devoted to some 25 of Szpilman's 'Piosenki' (chansons, popular songs) in archive recordings from the 50s, 60, and 70s of (predominantly) the composer's own arrangements - typically for sumptious dance orchestra or big band, and featuring some of Poland's most popular singers (unknown of course in 'The West').
Only when one hears these songs with their original Polish texts (whether one understands them or not), harmonised, arranged and sung in a style that bears the authenticity of their own time, can one appreciate the (no doubt well-intentioned) folly and inadequacy of this Wendy Lands collection. These new English texts are not translations, so the words have been artificially grafted onto a melody that has been crafted to set and convey text with quite another meaning. Of course the quality of Szpilman's material ensures that the new songs based on his melodies are perfectly respectable as atmospheric bluesy-jazzy numbers, but I can't help wishing that some executive had had the courage to release an album of the songs in their original language and colours... They are incomparably more atmospheric, haunting, charming, melancholy and elegant than the 'versions' presented on this new disc. Any lover of Edith Piaf or Jaques Brel, for example, would fall for them immediately - the inpenetrability of the language only adds to their charm, and is far more meaningful than the second-rate doggerel shoe-horned to the melodies here. I hope these Polish recordings will become generally available soon - if not, you'll have to make friends with a Pole, get a cheap flight to Warsaw, or petition Polish Radio! It really is worth it - the old recordings are charming and heartbreaking.
Huge Disappointment.......2004-02-27
After enjoying the autobiography and the movie, my family's expectations for this recording of Szpilman's songs were extremely high. From all angles, these hopes were crushed. The songs were probably - after their composition - given their first performance in a nightclub and that later exposure over Polish radio would hve retained the European night club feeling. The arrangements were far off the mark , both in their choice of instrumentation and in their composition. As for Miss Land, her voice is better described as "dreary" and "monotonous" rather than 'dark" and "smoky" as some have described it. To put it blunt.ly, she has no "voice" only breathy sighs.
I suggest that Andrzej Szpilman, Wladyslav' son, have another go at this project. During my Foreign Service career I have spent many months in Warsaw 1960-1962 and many hours at the Congresova and other night clubs. It shouldn't be too hard to persuade some Polish musicians to cooperate in a project to re-create Wladyslav's songs imbued with their original charm and spirit.
Finally, I wonder if the English lyrics followed the original Polish or were completely different.
Who is this woman!?!.......2003-06-17
What a beautiful voice, what sensitive, expressive delivery. I bought this album on a whim and I am blown away by the whole ensenble of fine musicians - but especially by Wendy Lands. The recording quality is clean and crisp, the songs evocative, intelligent, and melodic.
The last album that similarly impressed me was Norah Jones.
Then to realize that these melodies were written by Wladislaw Szpilman (the subject of Roman Polaski's "The Pianist") just adds to the wonderment of this beautiful album.
Please, more Wendy Lands! Bravo!!!
Truly Sublime!.......2003-06-15
I was suprised to learn that Wladyslaw Szpilman wrote contemporary songs. I was aware that he wrote compositions, but it never entered my mind that he wrote such beautiful songs that are on this CD. After seeing "The Pianist" and reading Spzilman's book and then seeing the DVD with an added documentary on the making of "The Pianist", my curiosity was piqued. Andrej Spzilman, the son of Wladyslaw, long dreamt of introducing his father's songs to the west and he chose Wendy Lands to sing these hauntingly beautiful songs. Upon purchasing this CD, I was hesitant that I might find them too much in the vein of 'Easy Listening'. I am glad to say that was not the case. I played it three times and should Wendy Lands continue to sing the songs of Wladyslaw Spzilman, I would be grateful. This is a very beautiful album and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Wladyslaw Spzilman did not merely survive the most grim conditions of The Holocaust, he thrived through his love of music and this album is proof of what a genius he was. I look forward to a second CD of his songs sung by Ms. Lands. Her heartrending interpretations draw the listener in. This is a truly sublime album!

There's no choir better than the Cambridge Singers for thoughtful, imaginative, cohesive programming, and for an ability to excel in performing music of various styles and periods. Here is a splendid example of this group's mastery of repertoire and choral technique, featuring some of the finest choral music ever written, from Tallis, Byrd, and Gibbons to Stanford, Howells, and Britten. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
The best!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-06-02
I am fond of sacred choral music, and I have listened to several groups and CDs. But I have yet to find any group with the superb quality of the Cambridge Singers! Under the direction of John Rutter their smooth, flawless music flows so seemingly effortlessly (though we know that much effort must be made for such angelic quality). The acoustics are awesome as the recording was recorded in an ancient cathedral. They say a whisper will resonate 5 seonds after the whisperer stops. And the selection of music as well is wonderful! There is a progression from the 1500s to the 1900s, and though all the music is nice the first portion is especially melodic, enchanting, relaxing, and inspiring!!! Therefore as the chorus, the recording sound, and the song selections are all EXCELLENT I would definitely recommend this CD to anyone! :)
Far more than faire..........2003-09-08
Recorded in the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral (the largest Lady Chapel in England), the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a great work in this album. Originally produced as a vinyl album in 1982, it was remastered as a CD in 1988. The title derives from a hymn lyric, and the music consists of a sampling of the greatest English church music from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. The music is meditative, uplifting, and elegant in simplicity and stunning vocal quality.
--Music--
This is all vocal music, unaccompanied by instruments. The disc has four primary sections: Music of the Latin Rite; Music of the Reformation; Music of the Restoration; and Anglican Revival and the twentieth century.
--Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words, in both Latin and English, for each of the pieces recorded here. It has a brief paragraph of introduction to each piece of music, relating it to its historic and musical contexts. One thing conspicuously missing is any significant biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the basic, one-sentence description.
--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices (about 28 voices for this recording), many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages.
"Treasures of English Church Music": same music, better buy.......2002-02-01
Thinking of purchasing the "Faire" and "Hail" CDs together? You will save money if you buy them in another guise: "Treasures of English Church Music." This 2-disk set is a reissue that combines Rutter's "Faire" and "Hail" CDs into a single package. You get the same disks for $12-$15 less.
Whatever the package, the music is gorgeous. Highly recommended.
Beautiful.......2001-08-22
Gorgeous sounding church music from early to 20th cent. A CD I play a lot - what more praise does it need?
John Rutter Presents English Chruch Music Through the Ages.......2000-08-19
In this atypical, that is, non-Christmas collection, John Rutter presents English church music from the 16th through the 20th centuries. While one may miss the absence of one or two compositions by Rutter himself, his capacity to achieve a unique sound with a choir is certainly here.
One who has enjoyed Rutter's Christmas music would do well to acquire this collection as well.

"classical music's greatest Ambassador...Arthur Fiedler!".......2001-07-14
When you think of classical music, Boston Pops and all-around-good listening...only one name rose above the rest ~ Arthur Fiedler! Not only did he have the best arrangements...but kept up with the times...everything from The Beatles, Gershwin, Henry Mancini, Carmichael, Stevie Wonder, Kern and Raksin...the list could go on...Fiedler brought classical into another dimension, before only the adults were the fans...with his imagination and personality...looked into the hearts of young Americans...and yes, you guessed it...won them over!
This CD is living proof...take a group of popular standards...Richard Hayman (arranger) and the rest will fall into place...Fiedler and the Pops give each tune life, exciting and beautiful melodies prevail...never before had such popularity with concerts and appearances, combining classical with tunes of today existed...but with the waving of his wan a new standard was born.
This recording is 1956 to 1974 performances...the entire 18 track selections are outstanding...leaving a rich legacy for all to enjoy now and years to come...this album is a rarity with you the music-lover in mind.

Album Description
A beautiful tribute to a great American musician. Folk songs, spirituals, and ballads popularized by Norman Luboff Choir, performed lovingly by some who toured and performed with him for more than a decade.
What a joy this CD is for Jackson and me! It allows us to celebrate Norman's universal influence and to share some of his greatness as musician.
I met Norman at a Choral Associates Workshop, a week-long educational feast introducing the writer behind those fabulous choral arrangements. I auditioned for him, met Jackson, and entered a beautiful world intertwined with impeccable musicianship, personal inspiration, friendship, and deep affection. The circle of musicians with whom I have come into contact since that week in June 1973 continues to nourish my musical soul today. So many of my life's connections were established that week, including meeting Jackson's touring friend, tenor-percussionist and then budding composer Chip Davis. The thread binding us and igniting a strong influence of excellence is Norman Luboff.
Norman's arrangements are exemplary of his genius. His appreciation for folk music is evidenced by his sincere and respectful treatment of each melody. Texts literally come alive with his nuance on important words, sensitive rubato, and expansive harmonizations. He always implored singers to sing folk or popular songs in the vernacular, as they are spoken.
Norman would enjoy the Cantorum's wonderful singing -- their robust voices, their natural sentimentality toward the lyrics, and the depth of their passion. These are the kinds of musicians that Norman engaged: fascinating singers with great voices, differing vocal timbre and energies. The fantastic mix of solo voices comfortable in both the popular and classical worlds contributes to the unique Luboff choral sound.
Almeda Berkey Soli Deo Gloria Cantorum, Conductor
Customer Reviews:
Norman Luboff Remembered.......2007-01-10
A very poor recording, almost amateurish. The voices seem to be adequate but the recording is so poor it is difficult to tell. This recording goes into my "I heard it once and that's enough" pile. The purchase was a mistake.
Please, more Choir, less Instruments!.......2005-06-08
I agree with the first reviewer. At age 56, I heard these guys live, and the arrangements were sublime. The vocals were amazing. Here, the instruments almost drown out the choir! Perhaps the pianist and bass player were relatives of the producer?? I would recommend almost any other Luboff CD over this one, even the ones reproduced with pops and hisses from the LP.
"Colorado Trail" is OK. "Shenandoah", one of the Choir's signature songs, is totally messed up.
Very disappointing, I'm sorry.
"A" FOR EFFORT.......2004-06-28
As a Norman Luboff Choir fan, I was extremely pleased to hear that a modern high fidelity remake was available of some of Mr. Luboff's works. Thank you to Mr. Berkey for resurrecting Mr. Luboff. I hope more discs are in the works or planned without the following shortcoming.
Unfortunately, the disc was disappointing because of what may appear to some to be a silly reason but not to me. The recording engineer probably did everything right except establish the presence of the choir relative to the instruments. Listen to a Norman Luboff Choir vinyl album or re-release on CD to hear what I mean.
In the original records, the choir is acoustically featured while in this CD, it's just another choir with equal emphasis placed on the orchestra. I hope that in future releases if any, the producer demands the same emphasis be placed on the choir voices as was originally applied in the recordings. After all, it is the Norman Luboff Choir voices I want to hear.
Norman.......2003-05-16
...I want to thank Almeda and Jackson Berkey for helping to keep Norman's legacy alive and Soli Deo Gloria Cantorum is wonderful.
The choir is superb.......2003-03-20
This CD is a Nebraska product, and a fine one it is! The director of the choir, Almeda Berkey, has combined with her husband, composer and professional pianist, Jackson, to produce this nostalgic look at the wonderful arrangements of their former mentor and employer, Norman Luboff. The liner notes in the accompanying booklet tell of the surprising association of Omaha's Chip Davis as a singer in the Luboff choir, along with Almeda. The choir is superb, well balanced, displaying beautiful voices and a thoroughly professional sound equal to that any of the Luboff choirs on the twelve LPs this author owns...Good variety in programming is a plus, as folk songs, pop songs, folk hymns and spirituals are all presented. Congratulations to the Berkeys, Recording Engineer Clete Baker and all involved on a first-rate recording!"

Lovin' Me Tender.......2001-12-28
I heard this first in 1983, a year after it was realised, and it made me sit up and listen to music production a little more than I had done. It was, as far as I can remember, produced by Willie Nelson and he made a great job of it. The love songs are only excellent with BB givin' his all. It was introduced to me by a Guy from Kerry who told me to listen to "You've always got the Blues" after a girl had dumped me and Man was he right.
If anyone can get a coopy of this on CD I'd pay any amount for it. It's possibly the best BB I've heard in my many years of listening to him.

Excellent album, had it a few years ago. Would like to buy the CD if it can be found. Every song is good to great. While B.B. is a good guitar player, this album allows one to appreciate his singing. Just great.

I wish I could find another copy of this cd. If you know where, let me know. The song "you and me, me and you" is great! If you've never heard it, you'll enjoy it. It gets into the vibes and grooves. Great opening guitar lick. I had this album but have lost it. :(
