At the end of 1986, Raising Hell was rap's best-selling album up to that point, though it would soon be outsold by the Beastie Boys' Licensed to Ill. Profile Records hoped that Run-D.M.C.'s fourth album, Tougher than Leather, would exceed the Beastie Boys' quintuple-platinum status, but unfortunately, the group's popularity had decreased by 1988. One of Run-D.M.C.'s strong points -- its love of rock & roll -- was also its undoing in hip-hop circles. Any type of crossover success tends to be viewed suspiciously in the hood, and hardcore hip-hoppers weren't overly receptive to "Miss Elaine," "Papa Crazy," "Mary, Mary" and other rap/rock delights found on the album. Thanks largely to rock fans, this album did go platinum for sales exceeding one million copies -- which ironically, Profile considered a disappointment. But the fact is that while Tougher than Leather isn't quite as strong as Run-D.M.C.'s first three albums, it was one of 1988's best rap releases. [Tougher Than Leather was remastered and reissued in 1999.]

5 out of 5 stars Memories.......2002-11-04

The recent passing of Jam Master Jay made me revisit their catalog, and while TTL was not their most well known album, It was always my favorite and I think it will stand up over time. It is very dense (similar to the Beastie's Paul's Boutique) and sounds great through a set of headphones.

If you are a fan of pure head bob'n rap from the 80's you'll appreciate this gem.

5 out of 5 stars Wise Up.......2004-12-23

Nobody seems to realize that this is one of Willie's best albums and it's my own personal favorite. It's really similar to Red-Headed Stranger in a lot of ways but this album is at least as good if not better. I think that it shows Willie at his most mature, intimate and creative. There is only one bonus track but it is absolutely beautiful. It's an awsome rarity. So wise up and get this album, with songs like "I am the Forest", it's one of Willie's best.

4 out of 5 stars Run DMC rocks harder than ever on this 4th LP.......2007-06-04

Tougher than Leather--
Rap group Run DMC experienced their biggest commercial success off the strength of their third LP, 1986's Raising Hell. In the process they virtually introduced hip-hop to most of mainstream America, while giving indie label Profile Records extra reason to be proud of the homeboys from Queens. A year later, their follow-up LP was allegedly scheduled to be released--and their manager Russell Simmons tried to extricate them from their deal with Profile. But Profile balked on parting ways with their biggest act, and Tougher than Leather made its debut in the spring of 1988. By this time, several things had occurred--for one, hip-hop's street audience had been moving on to newer acts during Run DMC's hiatus, like Big Daddy Kane, Eric B. & Rakim, and Ice T. Also, the pop charts still didn't seem to have room for more than one rap act, a slot which DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince now filled. Tougher than Leather was met with platinum sales, but the urban backlash to the group was tangible, despite a well-received "Run's House" tour. In retrospect, this album still holds up as one of the hardest rap albums of all time, as the hip-hop beats and loud guitars crash and burn like nowhere else. Produced mostly by Davy D, some of the best songs include `Mary Mary' (Rick Rubin's lone contribution, sampling the Monkees' tune), `Beats to the Rhyme', `Radio Station', `Miss Elaine', and the guitar-heavy title track. If Raising Hell is their best LP, Tougher than Leather is a close second. The 2005 re-release includes bonus material.

5 out of 5 stars The fourth classic in the series.......2006-01-25

In 1988, Run-DMC watched the rap industry that they began change before their eyes, led by west coast gangsters whose explicit lyrics and tough image was spreading fast. But the Hollis Crew stayed fast and stuck to the formula that had let them revolutionize music, and "Tougher Than Leather" is the fourth classic album in their catalog.

"Run's House" is a classic song that still gets play today. The call and response in it was another way that they helped influence music, and it has a cool live feel to it. "Mary Mary" is a song about a troublesome lady, the beat makes your head spin and they rhyme very fast, I've heard it sampled a lot. "Beats to the Rhyme" is one of my favorites, it has a simple and repetitive beat, and the funny voice samples between the rap verses were also widely imitated, I think that the Beastie Boys were influenced by this song. "Papa Crazy" is funny and has good production. "Soul to Rock and Roll" has a very hard drum beat and guitar line, and it sounds just like it came off "King of Rock". "I'm Not Going Out Like That" is a great song, the beat gets stuck in your head and it has a scratch and chorus that you'll find yourself singing. The rhymes are fast and well thought. "Ragtime" does once again what they had done before: taken a different style of music and rap over it. This deluxe edition is worthwhile because it has bonuses on it not found on any other original recordings.

While "Tougher Than Leather" is not quite as original or influential as their first three albums, it's a great old school hip hop record that serves its purpose perfectly. Run-DMC is one of the greatest music groups ever and this album displayed no exception.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Run DMC Reissue.......2005-09-07

When Tougher Than Leather was released in 1988 hip-hop and rap music was changing. Ice-T was spitting his gangsta rhymes. NWA and Eazy E were welcoming in West Coast rap and gangsta rap. Boogie Down Productions and Public Enemy had concious rap on lock. Artists such as MC Hammer (yes, he did have an album before "U Can't Touch This), Kool Moe Dee, Eric B. and Rakeem, Big Daddy Kane, and The Beastie Boys were on the scene and on the music charts. Run-DMC had a bit more competition that they once did. Tougher Than Leather was by no means a commercial disapointment but it didn't have that huge appeal that Raising Hell had. The album had hits with "Mary, Mary," and "I'm Not Going Out Like That."

The most memorable song from this reissue is "Christmas In Hollis." This song is considered the first hip-hop Christmas Carol and can still be heard every holiday season. The song didn't appear on the original pressing of Tougher Than Leather but is one of three bonus tracks on the reissue. The reissue includes an introduction by Chuck D and includes interesting facts including the fact that Run DMC were set to headline their 4th national tour when the album was released.

5 out of 5 stars One of the finest rap masterpieces ever created!.......1999-03-20

From beginning to end, "Tougher Than Leather" is a bombardment of old school hip-hop and heavy metal noise that chills the bone and rips the brain to the core. Unfortunately it is hard to find on CD, but if possible, grab it...then soak your hands in some cool water!

5 out of 5 stars Run Dmc are the KINGS OF ROCK!.......1999-03-15

This is by far one of the greatest rap cd's of all time. If all rappers where as good as Run Dmc rap would be by far the best music of the land.

5 out of 5 stars ITS 98 YA'LL AND IT STILL DROPS.......1998-08-02

This was the first rap tape I ever purchased. If you have a CD collection its not complete without this one. The Beats drop, the rthymes flow, cuts rip, and your CD playa gonna need flea powder from all the scratching. I just got it on CD. The party rolls in 98 partner!

5 out of 5 stars I really like this CD and the group.......1998-07-05

When it comes to hip hop music there are very few artists that I can say that I am a real fan of and very few hip hop albums that stick out in my mind, this is one of them. I have owned this CD in cassette form a total of five times. I've worn them out that's how good it is. The Run DMC rhyming style still to this day amazes me and the way they incorporate the hardcore guitar just, WOW!!. My favorite cuts are Tougher than Leather and Papa Crazy. I can't wait to get this album again.

4 out of 5 stars Was it something I did, Lord?.......2006-04-26

This is a short (30 minute) concept album by Willie Nelson. The storyline is about an outlaw in the old West. It's a very good album, but not among his most commercial material. It's a pretty sparse, all acoustic album. Casual Willie fans may not enjoy it that much, but serious fans will like it.

3 out of 5 stars Not an essential Willie Nelson album. But a good album........2002-12-12

Another one of Willie's concept albums. This falls under the category of enjoyable for fans. Non-fans it is a toss up. 31 minutes long. All but two are originals. Beer Barrel polka is an instr. arranged by his sister Bobbie Nelson. Instrumentation on alot of the tracks is minimal. Songs are interesting as well as how they tie together. The album is more low key then upbeat throughout. Though A little old fashioned Karma is upbeat and enjoyable it is in the minority. I would say this album is only for collector's of Willie's work and big fans. Otherwise his album from a year before this, Always On My Mind is a little bit more towards pop tastes and Red Headed Stranger though a special and unique record with little pop sensibility is where his genius for creating a concept album really shines. Those are maybe better choices than this one. Basically, I am with the other reviews-Enjoyable,not essential. Good, not great. One song here from the Bob Wills catalogue by the way.

3 out of 5 stars Jewels among the outtakes.......2000-08-18

Absolutely right! This is not Willie's best by any stretch of the imagination, but there are songs that stay with you for years here. When this record came out, I worked at Peaches Records in Detroit where we were obligated to play it, much to the New Wave crowd's dismay. This was the first Willie Nelson record I ever heard, and though it was another ten years before I was to actually purchase a Willie album, refrains from Tougher Than Leather have stayed in my mind right up until this year, when I bought it on CD. Songs like Summer of Roses, Changing Skies and My Love for the Rose more than make up for the weaker songs like I Am the Forest and Nobody Slides--not that these are BAD SONGS (in fact, they'd be high points in any other singer's career), but they're not up to Willie at his best. But then again, what is? Still, the handful of A-material songs on this one is more than worth the ten bucks you'll pay for it.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best, but not bad........1999-05-09

My exposure to Willie Nelson began when I was old enough to listen to the music my parents played while I played in my crib. I grew up with Willie. The first record I purchased was "The Redheaded Stranger," which I consider to be one of the best albums that Willie has ever done. And although "Tougher Than Leather" may not be as good as "Phases & Stages" or some of the other works of the master, it is nonetheless an example of the talent of Willie Nelson. This is a must buy album for any true Willie Nelson fan. This is good Willie - THERE IS NO BAD WILLIE!

    1 out of 5 stars Lousy Nelson.......1999-04-28

Why is this album available, when classic Nelson like 'Me and Paul,' 'Brand on My Heart' and 'In the Jailhouse Now' are out of print? Go figure!
