Cy Coleman and David Zippel's City of Angels is a seductive depiction of 1940s Los Angeles, capturing swinging jazz, torchy ballads, witty lyrics, and even a Manhattan Transfer-like Greek chorus (arranged by ManTran guru Yaron Gershovsky). James Naughton and Gregg Edelman star as Stone and Stine, respectively a tough Raymond Chandleresque PI and the writer who dreams up his adventures. Randy Graff plays Stone's long-suffering secretary and Dee Hoty the requisite femme fatale. Loads of atmosphere and tasty songs such as "What You Don't Know About Women," "With Every Breath I Take," "You're Nothing Without Me," and "You Can Always Count on Me" make City of Angels a modern classic. It won 1990 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Leading Actor (Naughton), Featured Actress (Graff), Best Book (Larry Gelbart), and Best Original Score. --David Horiuchi

3 out of 5 stars Fun Show, Average Score.......2007-02-21

Fun show, ingenuos concept, so-so score, with one exception. The ballad With Every Breath I Take is brilliant. One of Coleman's best pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Cleverness personified.......2006-10-16

A duet between an author and the character he created, each claiming "you're nothing without me," is just one example of how sharp, witty and clever show is, with an unusual score, jazzy and bluesy and very 1940s, and some of the best lyrics I know.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Jazz Musical That's FUN!!!.......2006-04-14

City of Angels is an incredibly fun, classy, and jazzy musical that delivers. Stellar vocal performances are provided by the entire cast, particularly the female end. The fact that Randy Graff was the only female from this cast nominated at the Tony Awards that year floors me. Kay McClelland and Rachel York deserved nods for their powerful solos, With Every Breath I Take and Lost Found, alone. These two songs are also the type of sultry, jazz solos that one would expect in the 40's, which is why the show works. The music is completely period with when the show takes place, and that's why I love it. The best tracks are:

3) What You Don't Know About Women
6) With Every Breath I Take (destined to be a classic)
9) Lost and Found (wonderful solo)
10) All You Have To Do Is Wait (FUN! FUN! FUN SONG!!! Hilarious as well)
11) You're Nothing Without Me
13) You Can Always Count On Me (Randy Graff's Tony!)

4 out of 5 stars Great Jazz-Oriented Score.......2005-06-25

1990 Tony winner for Best Musical, "City Of Angels" contains a great score, filled with jazz-oriented melodies & torch songs. Not all the songs are terrific, but most of the score lends itself to repeat listenings. Best tracks include:

Double Talk
What You Don't Know About Women
With Every Breath I Take [beautiful song!]
Lost And Found
You're Nothing Without Me [the show's hit]
You Can Always Count On Me
Funny

Great cast ... great buy!

5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2005-02-22

This is one of my favorite soundtracks ever! Since I'm going to be working on music for the show, I'm happy that this is the case. It has been in my CD player for a few weeks now, and there's enough variety for it not to get old. But having read through the script makes the lyrics infinitely wittier. Musicals are supposed to rely partially on the lyrics and partially on the script. This show does that perfectly. Without the script, the lyrics are (apparently) lacking. But without the lyrics, the script is missing something. When you put the two pieces together, however, it's really easy to see why this show won a Tony.

5 out of 5 stars Great, obscure old Berlin!.......2002-08-07

As a cast member on this album, I'm a little bit biased, but it's this is really a chance to get a listen to some really fabulous Berlin. This is Berlin's first Broadway show and has some great gems like "Have the Boys Around Me" and a bunch of great catchy tunes. It's a wide mix of Berlin and if you're a big fan, it's a great chance to hear him in still somewhat developmental stages. A couple songs from this show were later re-worked and put into other shows. It's also has a great feel for the period and shows the influences around the time he was writing: opera (Opera Melody), cowboys (I Gotta Go Back to Texas) and Hawaii (Honolulu Girls). It's a keeper!

Also on this CD is a great tribute to Berlin's counterpoint tunes. It's a mix of all three of the greats: Simple Melody, Old Fashioned Wedding, and Just in Love. Sung individually and then all three together! You won't get that anywhere else.

      5 out of 5 stars 3rd Classic From Doug E. Fresh.......2005-06-30

First of all, I have to say this is one of the most sporadic hip hop albums I have ever heard. Almost every track is a different style. It goes everywhere from Doug E. ripping it over funky beats, to slower paced love-raps, to a live track, to a dance-hall style song over Doug's beat-boxing, to crowd participation style songs, to him talking to his kids about drugs, to Doug E. actually rapping in Spanish. I really didn't get this album the first listen. However, upon additional spins the method in the madness became very apparent to me and I'd have to proclaim this album to being nothing less of a great musical accomplishment truely showing Doug E.'s range as a musician. Extremely fun to listen to and the great variety will keep anyone with a short attention span hooked. Production by the Get Fresh Crew and others is also dope. They definantly crafted thier own sound here, and its a very positive, funky one. Don't sleep, Doug E. Fresh is truely a rap icon and an innovator.

Though successful screen adaptations of My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, and West Side Story were yet to come at the time of this 1958 RKO musical, The Girl Most Likely was one of the last gasps of the original Hollywood film musical's golden days. This first-time CD release rescues the film's vibrantly kitschy soundtrack from oblivion, showcasing the studio's belated musical adaptation of its previous Ginger Rogers vehicle, Tom, Dick and Harry and a vibrant slate of songs by Meet Me in St. Louis composers Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane. Nelson Riddle brightens up the proceedings considerably with his romping title track and arrangements that crackle with jazzy big-band flair. As a bonus, the film's originally deleted duet between stars Jane Powell and Cliff Robertson, "I Like the Feeling," has been restored. New liner notes by composer Hugh Martin are included. --Jerry McCulley

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars QUITE A MOST UNUSUAL SOUNDTRACK.......2003-01-22

There are many other soundtracks from Jane Powell flicks we'd like to see released on CD, but it's not likely that's gonna happen soon. Still, we nod to DRG, who continues to do masterful jobs releasing the unexpected (and, frankly, sometimes unwarranted) soundtracks in their "Hollywood Collector Series." "The Girl Most Likely," the bouncy (but, ultimately, forgettable) RKO Jane Powell flick --- a musicalization of the Ginger Rogers vehicle "Tom, Dick and Harry" --- is best remembered for its two Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane politically incorrect tunes ("Crazy Horse" and "All the Colors of the Rainbow") and Kaye Ballard's delightful big-screen turn. (The only ditty written by the team is the title tune, penned by Nelson Riddle, who scored the flick, and lycrist Bob Russell.) This isn't film music at its best, but the curiosity factor is charming, especially on "I Like the Feeling," a song co-star Cliff Robertson was supposed to sing in the film. It was cut from the film, but here, it's back, with Cliff and Janie warbling ... complete with the actual heartbeats of the two lovers. Quite a most unusual day!

      5 out of 5 stars SOLID CD.......2004-03-16

This young brother has a fresh and distinctive sound over those artists who have pretended for the past 10 to 20 years to think that they were making good music. I have been listing to music since the early days of Motown,Sam Cooke,Otis Redding,Stylistics,Chilites,Earth Wind and Fire and other great groups of the 60s and 70s and I'm telling you Kalvin would have fitted in very well. My advice to anyone who truly loves music from back in day buy this cd. And my advice to Kalvin is to keep on doin what you doin because you do it well.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome New Talent.......2003-10-26

Really smooth - like satin on bare skin! Perfect sound for sexy romantic nights with that special one (Try "I'll Show You How"). If you're in a lively mood, though - grab "Party Tonight" and dance away! As an artist, Kalvin has incredible range with a phenomenal falsetto setting off his dreamy baritone. Super first solo album!

      Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Quilter deserves better..........2005-11-10

Was this recording of Quilter songs (Complete Folk-Song Arrangements and Complete Part-Songs for Women's Voices) a vanity project for soprano Amanda Pitt? It is hard to explain in any other terms, for her voice is not pleasant to hear. It is a pinched, badly produced, squally sound - the sort of standard one would expect in a not very gifted singing student. Why Naxos permitted this travesty of a recording under their label is a mystery.

The majority of the songs on this CD are sung by the aforesaid Amanda Pitt (soprano). The other singers in this project are of a better standard - in the case of Philip Langridge, beautiful to listen to. This recording is not worthy of his excellent career and lovely tenor voice. The other two singers - mezzo Joanne Thomas and baritone David Wilson-Johnson - are not bad, either, although the mezzo doesn't get a single solo. The lack of a solo for Ms Thomas is glaringly evident when compared to the ten (10) solos which Ms Pitt sings. (10 out of 21 solos - definitely an unfair ratio. Of these ten solos, several could have been given to the mezzo to sing - they were certainly not beyond the average mezzo range.)

The rest of the album consists of duets - thirteen of them. Eleven of the thirteen duets are soprano/mezzo, and in spite of the mezzo's voice (from what one is permitted to hear of it) isn't bad, the duet performances are frankly awful, chiefly because of Ms Pitt. Even the superior quality of Philip Langridge's singing cannot save the two duets he sings with Amanda Pitt.

It's artistically an insulting and atrociously unbalanced distribution of material.

Look for the John Mark Ainsley/Lisa Milne recording of Quilter songs & arias. Admittedly, it doesn't include most of the duets on this CD, but oh, the sheer pleasure of hearing well-trained and lovely voices give Quilter a worthy treatment!
