A Mature Sam Cooke.......2007-07-26
I can categorically say this album was the cream of Sam Cooke. The reason for saying this, is to counteract the previous comment made by A. Sturley. Sam did not change his voice for this concert. Sam was getting more mature. His voice was breaking. Which I preferred. Had he lived longer, he would'nt be too far of Bobby Womack or a more polished soul singer. Also him moving with the times, who knows how he would really sound like had he lived longer. A. Sturley, if you do not believe me,buy and listen to the album (Keep Moving On).Both albums will always make music listeners take notes. The One Night Stand: Live at the Harlem Square Club was Sam Cooke delivering at his very best!
An Unforgettable Live Album.......2007-04-17
This album is a priceless gem that you will treasure forever! Sam Cooke metaphorically rolls up his sleeves and really works up a sweat in this amazing live concert at the Harlem Square Club, giving an earthy, gritty performance that is spellbinding. Sam's delivery crackles with raw energy! He belts out the songs with an emotional intensity and sense of urgency that whips his audience into euphoric frenzy.
Some favourite, well-loved songs (such as "Cupid," "Chain Gang," "Bring it on Home to Me," etc.) have been thumpingly and effectively re-worked to give them an edginess which causes the temperature to soar in that highly charged, festive atmosphere.
You can feel the electricity in the air! Sam teases and cajoles an attentive and adoring audience who eagerly comply with the call to party. The tempo intensifies and reaches a crescendo at the end of a totally exhilarating and riveting musical experience!
One of the greatest live performances.......2007-01-12
Sam Cooke delivers an unbelievable performance in this one. When I first got it, it was difficult for me to appreciate this live album. But as time passed by, the more it grew on me. And now, it's truly one of my favorite albums. Any soul music fan has to have this one.
The way Sam Cooke works the crowd is a thing of beauty. Those people that attended this performance are some lucky folks. He gives it his all and the crowd appreciates it. My personal favorite was "Chain Gang" because of the way he works the crowd at the end and because his voice is just electrifying with his "oh yeah" screams. Sam Cooke may not be my favorite artist but I believe he's the greatest artist of all-time. This record is one of the many testaments of that.
ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS EVER!.......2006-11-21
This is soul at its very best! No matter how many times I listen to this album, I NEVER get tired of it. Sam Cooke went on to inspire thousands of musicians and, after hearing this album, you'll know why. Since the new movie "Ali," starring Will Smith, has been released on DVD and VHS, a lot of people wonder about the beginning where the actor portraying Sam Cooke is performing. Well, this recording is exactly where they got the idea for the beginning of the film.
Of course, my favorite is "Bring It On Home To Me." Sam delivers his music with all the fervor of a gospel sermon and beat of a pop/doo wop song. Then, there are also the usual hits, from "Cupid" to "Twistin' The Night Away."
If you're looking for a soul album to start a collection, this IS the ONE!!! It'll keep you moving!!! The sound is no longer mono, making it all the more enjoyable. The fact that Sam could get the place jumpin' is exactly why he was such a great entertainer. You can feel the high energy and the fun of that evening back in 1963 oozing out of the stereo every time you listen to this album. James Brown may be the Godfather of soul, but Sam Cooke is the father!!!
should get more than 5 stars!.......2006-08-19
This is the live album to outdo all other live albums. I am a head banging, rock and roller, guitar nut and this is still the best live album ever!
The main reason that it is great is b/c Sam Cooke works the audience. The cd builds up steam as the songs go by. This is a snowball rolling down a hill that gets bigger and bigger.
He talks to the audience, works the ladies, entices the men, pumps up his band, etc. The songs are almost a "best of" situation. Chain gang, having a party, twisting are all awesome!
You know how great the cd is? The recording has serious limitations. There are no highs and no lows. Horns, guitar, bass, drums are all mixed way towards the back but Cooke's singing and talking are way towards the front. It does not matter and should not influence anyone's listening pleasure.
A great comparison is to Otis Redding live at the Whiskey a Go Go. That is a good concert, fantastic sound recording and the band seriously rocks. This blows that away.
This is not only the best concert cd but also, it is obvious how other entertainers and djs modeled themselves afer Sam Cooke's style.
What a shame that this tremendous performer died in his prime.
Whoever reads this take note...I am no soul music fanatic. I am a Lez Zep. Who, Nirvana, guitarnut type of guy. THAT is how powerful that this work is b/c it most definetly rocks more than "live at leeds", "get your ya yas out", "Song remains the same", etc.

While they aren't the first to do so, Camp Lo's Sonny Cheeba and Geechie Suede make a direct appeal from hip-hop's current generation back to the blaxploitation era on Uptown Saturday Night, which recrafts the up-tempo, party atmosphere of the swinging 1970s, resplendent in the musical and cultural iconography of Harlem- and Bronx-style blaxploitation. Even for listeners who never watched Shaft, Superfly, or The Mack, Camp Lo's songs carry themselves with a cool air of slick styles. As critics have noted, Cheeba and Suede's lyrics are often nonrhyming barrages of key blaxploitation terminology that--read conventionally--actually make no sense, but their spitfire pacing makes up in style what their verses lack in content (which is actually a pretty good description of blaxploitation, if you think about it). Much credit needs to go to producer Ski (who was also the musical mastermind behind Jay Z's impressive debut, Reasonable Doubt), who shows a smart sampling ear with bubbly pop tracks that are infectious enough to rock the party while still appealing to hardcore hip-hop heads. --Oliver Wang

Classick Material !.......2007-07-23
Great cd a must have if you grew up during the golden age of hip-hop !!
ONE OF BEST HIP HOP CDS EVER PUT TOGETHER.......2007-07-06
Let me give you some background. I brought this cd back in 98 around the time they first dropped. It was a classic then, and it still holds up now. This cd is so unique it's ridiculous. Nobody else sounds like camplo, 10 years running. For those that don't know the new album drops the 24th of this month, I heard the black hollywood track off of it, and it's crazy. Anybody who claims to be a hip hop head and don't have this album or never heard of them, please take they hip hop card cause they lying to us. Camp Lo is hip hop in this crazy a** rap world we in now. Ski producing the new album like he did with uptown, "I get krystal carrington ice rock griddy"
Original Style from Da Bronx !!!.......2007-06-25
This duo is from da Bronx (NYC) and it is composed by 2 rappers :Sonny Cheeba and Geechi Suede.
Cheeba said:"Thanks to all the cats that laugh at my style and then copy !!!"
Camp Lo formed in 1995.
They are most notable for their flair towards blaxploitation in their style of dress and in their lyrics.
Camp Lo uses slang heavily, often to the point of near incomprehensibility. A typical example of their lyrics is:
"Casanova brown, levitating jiggy in da shiggy's / In la hotta car 54 chasin' diamond runners / Headin' ice-bound, where every chilla dime can get / Your Harlem buck strut freezin' world heist Hollywood."
This is one of the best rap records in all the history of the Hip-Hop !!!
P.S.: Please check up my rap listmania, just clicking on my nickname and clicking above my listmania. Here there are 40 Hip-Hop albums choosed by me just for winning people and not for fans of the mortal masochism rap !!!
I assure that in my rap albums' list you will find the best American Hip-Hop albums. There are dance beats and strong ones and lyrics just for the winninf person in the life !!!

A throwback...artistic, nostalgic hip hop (4.5/5).......2006-12-06
Camp Lo's 1997 debut "Uptown Saturday Night" is a very underappreciated, unique hip hop album. The duo of Sonny Cheeba and Geechie Suede create a type of hip hop that is really unique and original. Their bouncy, happy rhyming style is just really fun, they both have cool flows and interesting voices, they really keep you listening. Producer Ski, one of the more underrated east coast producers of the 90s, creates dense musical soundscapes that are often just beautiful. If I were to pick two words to describe the sound of "Uptown Saturday Night," they would be rich and majestic. The sound is really nostalgic of multiple eras past, sampling classic jazz, soul, funk, and even early hip hop standards. This is one of the last great party albums, balancing the joyful banger singles with the toned, thoughtful slow tracks. I highly recommend "Uptown Saturday Night," this album is really special in a lot of ways and has been slept-on for too long.
The album begins with "Krystal Karrington," an upbeat, funky start where Cheeba and Suede introduce themselves as lyricists with their silky, smooth stylings. One of the best hip hop singles of all time follows, "Luchini aka This Is It." From the singalong chorus to the perfect horn-laden beat to the joyfully happy lyrics, this song is perfect, and there's not much more I can say, it makes the album worth the purchase alone. "Park Joint" uses a really catchy funky sample, I remember Pete Rock using this sample in the past, it's an upbeat track and a party-starter. "B-Side to Hollywood" has jazzy muted horns and the duo steals the show on the mic, the hook is great too. "Killin' `Em Softly" has a slower beat but some of the album's hardest verses. I love "Sparkle," a jazzy and beautiful nighttime song with another nice chorus. "Black Connection" has a sad and dramatic sample, once again the two rappers shine over great production, really bringing out the best in the music. "Swing" is another well-produced, catchy cut, and "Rockin' It aka Spanish Harlem" has some Latin influence. "Say Word" and "Negro League" are two lyrical highlights. "Nicky Barnes aka It's Alright" is dripping with style, and "Black Nostaljack aka Come On" is one of my favorites on the disc. "Coolie High" is gorgeous, slow and sultry. The album closes with an interesting mix of "Sparkle," it has no noticeable drumbeat and sounds like spoken whispered poetry.
"Uptown Saturday Night" is an album unlike any other I've heard, it has tons of replay value and is just executed with near perfection. The two rappers are so unique, excelling on multiple levels, and the production is almost flawless. I don't know if it came at the wrong time or was just above the world's head, but this one is highly recommended, it's a slept-on and underrated gem.
This cd is hot!!!.......2006-09-21
I always wanted this cd but everty time I caught the video I could never catch the name of the group and every time I called the radio to ask them who song it was they act real stupid so I gave up. But I finally caught the video over the weekened and got the name of the group and ordered the cd immediately. I just got it in the mail yesterday and thanks to all the reviews it really made me want it I knew it would be a hot cd and to my satisfaction it was. Oh and I diffently agree with pankysweet SONNY CHEEBA is fine his smile makes me want to melt to!!!

Customer Reviews:
Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Customer Reviews:
The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Pretty Ricky pretty much have sex on the brain, and with hits like "Grind with Me" and "Your Body" off 2005's Blue Stars winning the Miami foursome overnight superstardom, you sort of can't expect them to mess with the formula. That explains the obvious if-it-ain't-broke approach the boy-band of brothers took on this, their sophomore CD: If song titles like "Up and Down" and "Push It" don't say it all, lyrics, as in the unapologetically raunchy ones to "Personal Trainer," most certainly will. Look beyond the sleaze (some of it borderline sweet, as in the line "I've been thinkin' about you all day/In a nasty, passionate way" from "So Confused"), and what you'll find on Late Night Special is a whole lotta talent, though. Pretty Ricky is the current decade's answer to Jodeci, with a little Bone Thugs thrown in; "On the Hotline" brings the heat of the latter, and "Make it Like it Was" steps up with the taut hooks of the former. --Tammy La Gorce

If "0" was an option, that's what I would've given this.......2007-07-12
Awful, awful, awful lyrics....why does it have to be all about SEX. Can we sing about something else....why do lyrics today have to be so raunchy, just straight up nasty! Are they that crazed for SEX. Teens today need to know that other things exist other than sex, violence, and drugs...there's nothing "special" about this at all.
Pretty Ricky Is Something Special!.......2007-05-01
So I was kind of skeptical about this cd. But I gave it a try anyway. And I am pretty glad that I did. The cd is great! All the songs are good and the boys blend the vocals and rapping perfectly. The rap lyrics, could have been stepped up a bit though. The beats are well produced too. Overall, I say Pretty Ricky did their thing on this album. They don't even begin to compare to Jodeci, but they are worth checking out.
Hot Tracks: Push It, So Confused
Late NIght Special.......2007-04-10
Pretty Ricky was pretty much inspired by Jodeci and Usher to record this hot album. This album is very sensual and sexual at the same time. I love this album. This album seems destine to surpass their previous success. The growth and maturity of their lyrics, production, and vocals, coupled with their innate ability to connect with virtually any market that shows the diversity and expansion of these superstars. Forget everything else on the menu-This group is your one and only LATE NIGHT SPECIAL.
Oh, no; not these guys again..........2007-03-27
I'll admit it; I never was much of a Pretty Ricky fan, especially after listening to Bluestars. I mean, I like sex as much as the next guy, but that seemed to be all these guys ever talked about -- and it didn't help that they have very, VERY below-average rapping skills (and Pleasure's singing is pretty okay). And this trend continues on Late Night Special.
Now, I won't say that nobody likes Pretty Ricky; after all, this album DID debut at #1 on the Billboard 200. But I have to say that this is another one of those cases where I looked at the other reviews and now I'm asking, "Did we all listen to the same album?" And aside from all the usual sexual talk, the guys still rely on dated rhymes, like "let me do you after school like some homework" ("Leave It All Up to You"), "you got me feenin' like Jodeci" ("Love Like Honey"), and, once again, "if I'm lyin', I'm flyin'" (the title track).
As was the case with the first album, the guys aren't very impressive when they DON'T talk about sex either, mainly because considering the way they normally rap (lyrics AND style), it's kind of hard to then take them seriously (especially Slick). This is evident on "Stay" (but Pleasure's singing is pretty God-awful on that song too) and the necessary song about clubbing, "Push It Baby". And "So Confused" is aptly titled because the chorus is about being in love with a girl who's taken, but then the verses contain their usual dirty talk.
This album also contains a pretty statutory song, the aforementioned "Leave It All Up to You". But in the long run, maybe that isn't HORRIBLE because teenage girls are probably the only people that'll pick up this album. Like I said before, I have nothing against sex, but if that's all you talk about AND you're wack, then it's really a turnoff. I'm going to have to pass on this late night special and see what else is on the menu.

Amazon.com essential recording
By now a seasoned master of late-night amour and heartbreak, Vandross upped the creative ante somewhat with this 1985 release. A concept about the rise and fall of a relationship, The Night I Fell in Love is classic Luther, down to the homage to pop-soul's past (an aching cover of Stevie Wonder's "Creepin") and the endless promise of love's potential. Always one of the best and most understated male singers in black pop, Luther is possibly at his peak here. It's impossible to keep the emotions in check on such odes to love as "If Only for One Night" or the finger-popping "My Baby Comes Home." --Amy Linden

His Best CD.......2007-06-10
I love everything Luther ever made ,but if you want to see what made him great buy this cd.
Just so romantic, and endearing, this sound........2007-01-26
Wonderful way to end a long day with someone you love. He was one of a kind.
Another Luther masterpiece.......2006-12-14
By 1985 Luther Vandross was the premier ballader in R&B. This album spawned four Billboard R&B singles in "'Til My Baby Comes Home," "It's Over Now," "Wait for Love," and "If Only for One Night." It also featured "Creepin" but Luther's the best at ballads in particular If Only For One Night.
Maybe Luther's best.......2006-10-21
The fourth album in what I like to call"The getting to know Luther Trilogy".Four albums that define and sum up this man.We know as "Luther"
1.Never Too Much 1981
2.Forever,For Always,For Love 1982
3.Busy Body 1983
4.The Night I fell in Love 1985
I could never pick a fav.Luther album. But This one and Busy Body are my favs.
I was 4 years old when this came out.Luther was one the few artists as a child that I recognized. My parents played this and Busy Body alot.So those two albums introduced me Luther.
Til' my Baby comes home-Song about waiting on your baby.Every girl coming onto you.But No.My girl is plenty.
The Night I fell in love-Funky drum programmed and bass playing by my boy
Marcus Miller.Everybody has a time when they first fell in love.So u could relate and reminisce wit' Luther.
If only for one night-Longing,needing,wanting to be wit that woman badly.
Secs,minutes,hours,one day,one night.
Creepin-Stevie wonder remake with a jazzed out appeal. That girl is in everywhere I go.Dreams,Thoughts,Feelings
It's over Now-Funk Jam with some more heavy bass lines from Marcus Miller.
Woman cheating on you with not one but two guys. It's over baby.
Wait for love-If you can't find love.Don't worry.Don't rush.It'll find you.
My Sensitivity-Emotions take control sometimes when you like or love somebody so much.
The other side of the world-you never know where you'll find love.Right under your nose.
I have to say this is the last fully R&B album Luther would do.Venturing into pop in his future albums.
This is the Luther I'll always remember.Jheri Curled,Goatee.
RIP Luther
Luther's greatest.......2005-09-25

Born Jerome Felder in Brooklyn in 1925, Doc Pomus was stricken with polio at age nine and spent most of his life on crutches or in a wheelchair. That didn't stop him from imitating his hero Big Joe Turner in Manhattan clubs with musicians like Milt Jackson, Horace Silver, King Curtis, and Buddy Tate. He soon found he had a gift for writing witty lyrics to standard blues changes, and in 1955, a 17-year-old kid named Mort Shuman started hanging around Pomus's apartment as a sort of apprentice songwriter. Shuman wrote catchy pop/R&B tunes for Pomus's lyrics, and by '59 they had hits with Dion's "Teenager in Love" and the Mystics' "Hushabye." Before they broke up in '65, they had written 20 songs for Elvis Presley and at least half that many for the Drifters. After a 10-year retirement, Pomus started writing again with Mac Rebennack for albums by B.B. King, Jimmy Witherspoon, and Johnny Adams. Till the Night Is Gone: A Tribute to Doc Pomus reinforces the obvious point that Pomus's tunes should be considered American pop standards as much as Irving Berlin or Harold Arlen's compositions, and should be recorded again and again. The three greatest American songwriters of the '60s--Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, and Lou Reed--are all on hand to pay their respects. Dylan turns in the disc's most surprising performance, a slinky, funky, country-swing version of "Boogie Woogie Country Girl." Reed injects a modern irony into "This Magic Moment" by contrasting a straightforward, optimistic vocal against grinding, apocalyptic guitars. Los Lobos and John Hiatt & the Guilty Dogs turn in invigorating, garage-rock demolitions of "Lonely Avenue" and "Mess O' Blues" respectively. In fact, the only misstep on the whole album is Shawn Colvin's ponderous, portentous take on "Viva Las Vegas." --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
great artists pay tribute to a great songwriter.......2006-09-28
Having owned and listened to this over 10 years I can say with absolute confidence this ranks as the best tribute CD I own by a stretch. The diversity of the music on this CD is a wonderful tribute to a terrific songwriter. (PS : The headline review couldn't be more wrong about Shawn Colvin's version of Viva Las Vegas - it's a stunner).
The best songwriter you never heard of.......2004-11-25
I was referred this cd by a friend who described it just that way- the best songwriter you never heard of- the liner notes are worth the price of the cd. You can tell by the artists who performed Doc's songs how much he was respected. Shawn Colvins "viva las vegas" knocked me out.
Viva Doc.......2002-09-01
Shawn Colvin brings meanings and nuances out of Viva Las Vegas maybe not intend by the Doc, but this is a great version. Got a good song? Need a good singer? Call Aaron Neville. What a voice, this ranks with his work on In The Still Of The Night from the Red Hot And Blue benefit album of a few years back.
This cd tribute is uniformly good from start to finish, and it seems unfair not to mention everyone taking part, but I'll just end with a recommendation to check out John Hiatt and his most excellent band chewing their way through Mess Of The Blues.
An Obscure Gem.......2002-08-01
This is a fantastic CD. Any single one of these songs would be reason enough to buy the disc; together they are a bonanza. The highlight for me is the great B.B. King's rendition of "Blinded By Love"; the depth and resonance of B.B.'s voice send chills. I've long loved Elvis Presley's recording of "Viva Las Vegas" and the ridiculous movie it came from, but I also love Shawn Colvin's version from the ridiculous Lebowski. Cesar Rosas and Los Lobos do a number on "Lonely Avenue." Dylan, John Hiatt, The Band, Doctor John; every last one is great.
One of my favorite CDs.......2001-06-12
I find myself listening to this one a lot, and why not? A great song is a great song, and Doc wrote hundreds. Favorites are Shawn Colvin's "Viva Las Vegas" (who wouldn't want to see the strip with a woman with a voice like that?) and B.B. King's "Blinded by Love," which to me is his most recent truly great performance. The only blot on this landscape is Lou Reed's "This Magic Moment," which is one of the most unintentionally hilarious hachet jobs I've ever heard. I mean, the Harmonicats couldn't have done a worse job; Reed, despite his links to Pomus, simply isn't a singer, and his band on this cut sounds like a garbage truck with an oil leak.

This first pairing of R&B song stylist Downing with soulful sax man Albright is nothing short of inspired, providing two of the '80s' most popular performers with a chance to showcase their jazz chops. Pleasures of the Night also gives Downing--best known for his stellar work on albums like A Dream Fulfilled and Love's the Place to Be--some respite from the drive for chart hits evident on his last few albums for Mercury. His velvetlike baritone is perfectly suited to the diverse range of material, which includes the Beatles' "Michelle," Stevie Wonder's "Girl Blue," and standards like "The Nearness of You" and "Here's That Rainy Day." Albright gets plenty of room to shine with deft but subtle musical nuances on the Bacharach-David classic "The Look of Love" and the Stylistics' "Stop, Look, Listen" and is at his peak on the out-and-out jazz-oriented instrumental "Back to the Roots." Produced by longtime Downing collaborator Ronnie Foster, the album's guest stars include top players like Patrice Rushen and Bobby Lyle on keyboards, Paul Jackson on guitar, Abe Laboriel on bass, and Harvey Mason on drums. A significant creative departure for Downing, Pleasures of the Night promises a whole new career chapter for the Brooklyn-born vocalist: traditional R&B's temporary loss may represent a permanent gain for the world of contemporary jazz, which desperately needs some new male-vocal blood. --David Nathan

"The Nearness of You", "Like A Lover" and the title track are true masterpieces.

This is one sexy and romatic CD. LOVE it and never get tired of the sophisticated sounds that come from it.
Will DOwning and Gerald Albright need to make some more music together.
Excellent choice for any occasion. A++++
good god.......2006-04-08
Iv'e had this album for a while, and i never get tired of it. Beware, if you dont want any babies, dont play this cd for that "special night" with the wife or husband. even the damn intro will get you in the mood. i have never enjoyed a cd quite as much as this one.
The stylistic's cover "stop, look, and listen," is quite impressive, while "here's that rainy day" will put you into a trance from the first 5 seconds
the only problem that i have with it is that it is too short........
My favorite.......2005-10-12
I bought this CD years ago when it first came out and I recently bought another copy for the car. I love this CD- I never tire of listening to it.

The best of Luther.......2007-01-09
This was the second time that I bought this CD. My husband "borrowed" the first one for an extended time. One Night with You has slow songs and a few upbeat ones as well. I thoroughly enjoy this CD.
MUSIC IS FOREVER !.......2006-08-03
IT HAS BEEN JUST OVER A YEAR NOW SINCE THE DEATH OF THE GREAT
LUTHER VANDROSS.BUT THIS CD REMINDS ME EVERY TIME I PLAY IT HOW HE WAS ONE OF THE BEST SINGER'S OF R&B WHO EVER LIVED.
THIS CD MAKES ME REALIZE THAT AS LONG AS THE MUSIC PLAY'S THE MEMORIES WILL NEVER FADE.THE SONG'S ON THIS CD I HAVE HAD SOME GREAT MEMORIES TO;ALONG WITH MILLION'S OF HIS OTHER FAN'S.
LUTHER VANDROSS MAY NOW BE GONE BUT HIS MUSIC WILL BE FOREVER.
MAY HE REST IN PEACE (ROME,NEW YORK).
Still For The Love.......2006-06-30
These days, the music industry seems to be more about gloss, rather than the elegance of someone and the most important thing of them all, the voice. Yet, it is also sad that within that voice, this past year we've lost some great soulful singers like Lou Rawls, Barry White, Marvin Gaye, and recently Luther Vandross. It is very sad though because this July marks one year ago, that the world lost one of the most gifted singers ever in not just R&B, but the world of music in total. Yet, his era with Sony cmae to an end in the 90's and he brought out some great songs to match. This collection sums the second half of it.
One Night With You: The Best Of Love Volume 2 is a well-rendered reflection of Luther Vandross, and the era that he had made in the 90's with his career. The album was re-released as part of SonyBMG's The Hits series, and the songs sound great. The album includes classics like Power Of Love / Love Power, Don't Want To Be A Fool, his remake of Lionel Richie & Diana Ross' Endless Love with Mariah Carey, and Always And Forever. Whiele the collection does deliver nicely, there still were a couple of tracks that weren't highlighted like Going In Circles, and other great tracks.
Despite a few flaws, One Night With You: The Best Of Love Volume 2 is a good reflection of Luther's era in the 90's for die hard fans, but it still could've benn better for new fans of the belated, elequent singer. For those, I would recommend the 2003 Essential Luther Vandross collection instead, from the soulful man with the power of love.

THERE IS NO ONE LIKE LUTHER.
The latter years.......2004-08-03
I would actually give this album four-and-a-half stars. The second volume of THE BEST OF LOVE covers most of Luther's nineties hits for Epic, and was his last official release on the label. The impressive stream of hits includes the smash hits "Power of Love/Love Power" (#4 Pop, #1 R&B, #3 Adult Contemporary), "Don't Want To Be a Fool" (#9 Pop, #4 R&B, #14 Adult Contemporary), "The Best Things In Life Are Free" (#10 Pop, #1 R&B, #3 Dance), and "Endless Love" (#2 Pop, #7 R&B, #11 Adult Contemporary). Also included are the R&B hits "Little Miracles" (#62 Pop, #10 R&B) and "Your Secret Love" (#52 Pop, #5 R&B), as well a few lower-charting singles - "Love the One You're With" (#95 Pop, #28 R&B), "Always and Forever" (#58 Pop, #16 R&B, #25 Adult Contemporary), and "I Can Make It Better" (#80 Pop, #15 R&B) - all three of which should have been much more successful.
The disc is rounded out by four newly-recorded songs, an okay remix of "Love Don't Love You," and Luther's exceptional, but out-of-place, rendition of "My Favorite Things." All of the four new songs are fine and nice to have, but only the cut by Jam & Lewis ("I Won't Let You Do That To Me") really stands out. While all of Luther's pop hits from this time period are here, I do wish that more of his R&B and adult contemporary hits, like "The Rush" (#73 Pop, #6 R&B) and "Sometimes It's Only Love" (#9 R&B, #9 Adult Contemporary), were included. However, THE BEST OF LOVE VOLUME 2 covers most of the bases, and is an excellent bookend to the first BEST OF LOVE. Bizarrely, even with the new material included, this compilation only reached #44 on the Hot 200 (Luther's lowest-charting album) and his first not to reach Platinum status in sales.
