This, Anonymous 4's final recording, is a break from their usual "early music" periods and locations; it presents American music, religious in nature, from the 18th and 19th centuries. And it's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Their normal, exquisite technique and purity here blend to sound the way we imagined the ladies' choir in church meetings in America past might have sounded: sweet, sincere, and with harmonies recognizable yet somehow fresh. Some of the songs begin with the women singing "fa, so la" exercises, which was called "shape note" singing because some places taught singing with notes as shapes--circle, rectangle, diamond, triangle. But it's the music that counts, and there are treasures here. They include two versions of "Amazing Grace," one familiar, one with an unusual melody and a piece called "Blooming Vale" which is as sophisticated as anything on their previous albums. "Shall We Gather at the River" is performed with a clarity and loveliness that makes us forget that it's normally sung as background to movies about the Great Depression. The foursome sometimes sing in rich harmonies and occasionally alone or in pairs or trios. This is glorious Americana and highly recommended. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
spiritual americana.......2007-01-06
I have some of the older Anonymous 4 recordings which are more medieval
and gregorian in style (I love them!). They move on to cover spiritual
basics of the 1800s. If you like classical music, perfect harmonies
and spiritual americina, then you will be blessed!
Rich Heritage.......2006-10-11
Anonymous 4 consistently produces exquisite and authentically beautiful recordings and this one presents early American hymns in ways few groups can manage. Some tunes are highly recognizable while others are 'new' to me but a refreshing reminder of the singing heritage of religious societies in times past. For those who enjoy old hymns and authentic renderings, this is a must buy.
Superb .......2006-08-07
This collection of American Christian music is not only an enthralling musical experience but a spiritually uplifting one as well. Anonymous Four have transferred their luminous vocal quality to a new space with perfect success.
Can't walk away from it!.......2006-08-07
My only "complaint" about the CD is that I absolutely HAVE to sit and listen to the entire thing whenever I start it up! I usually have music playing in the background while doing other things, but not this one! There are no tracks that I find myself wanting to skip over as in most collections. In fact, I usually find myself going back and listening to selected tracks again (and again and...) after taking the hour+ to listen to the whole thing through once.
These four ladies produce a unique and remarkable sound. I can't recommend it enough.
Mana from Heaven.......2006-05-08
I think the title of this CD is perfect. I first heard an interview for this CD on Public Radio and fell in love. I had never heard Anonymous 4 before then but look for all I can find of their music now. The title is perfect as the women sound like Angels and the music lifts the spirit. I find myself singing the old version of Amazing Grace all the time now. Incredible and a huge blessing to all who hear it.

Edsel. 2006.
Album Details
Many Experts on the Subject Contend that Disco was "Invented" at Philadelphia International Records in the Mid-seventies. If this is the Case, it is Amazing that this 24 Track, Two CD Compilation is the First Ever Collection of the Label's 12" Singles. Originally Issued Between 1976 and 1984, These Tracks Represent the Birth and Early History of the 12" Single, and Most of them Are Making their CD Debut on this Package.
Customer Reviews:
NOT EXACTLY A PHILLY CHEESE STEAK BUT..... .......2007-03-01
It's tasty enough. Philadelphia International 12" Singles brings together some of the 12" singles released by the legendary record label during disco's heyday of the late 70's and early 80's. Most of the long tracks on here are fairly obscure and may not be obvious to many fans of the label.
What's cool about this set is that many of tracks does not sound like the trademark Philly International sound (a la "I love Music"). Instead, it showcases a different side to philly international with a wide range of songs. "Strut your funky stuff" is a cool slice of euro dance, "Goldmine" is one of the funkiest long players released by the label, "Let's Clean up the Ghetto" has a charging bassline that's every bit as demanding as the singers plea for neighborhoods to come together and clean it up, "Aint got time for nothin" is a smooth hybrid of the trademark PIR strings and an Earth Wind and Fire style bassline and vocals. "Put our Heads Together" finds the O Jays adapting to the 80's gracefully, and who haven't heard "You gonna make me love somebody else" and "Ain't no Stopping us Now".
There are some ocassional dull patches such as Jocko's "Rocketship" (If you're able to endure his corny attempt at rapping, the rhythm track is funky enough to make you not wanna press the skip button) and "Rhythm Talk". "Let me be Good to you" is a lightheated throw away and could've been replaced with a far superior 12" track such as Teddy P's "Only You".
While showcasing a different side to philly International is a amirable move, it does so at the expense of consistency in terms of sound. While the album is generally solid from start to finish, the tracks seem patchy and throwed together with a whiplash change in sounds and tones from track to track. Taken all at once, it can be a bit much to handle. Taken in moderation, you'll truly see how good a lot of these songs are.
Not only does the tacky pacing of the songs hold this album back from being better than it could've been, It's the quality of the songs. This anthology is not as climatic as it appears to be since many of the these songs are not lost masterpieces. Only a handful of these songs can actually go down as PIR classics. Sure there's plently of highlights on this album, but most of them don't match the unforgettable quality
of the classics PIR songs that we're familiar with.
The patchy track flow and the quality of the songs make PIR 12" Singles sound like "Bonus Tracks" to a great album more so than a definitive anthology. Make no mistake, its enough highlights and good rarities to make it worth checking out and having in your collection. This album can best be described as a philly cheese steak without a lot of grease. It taste good but its not the same!
At last.......2007-01-05
After an excellent collection «Motown disco» we've got now an excellent collection «Philadelphia disco». 21 tracks are from the period 1977-1979 and two from the 80's. Some songs were hard to find like «You gonna make me love somebody else» (8:00) by the Jones Girls, «I'll never forget my favorite disco» (5:37) by Dexter Wansel featuring the Jones Girls or «It's critical» (6:30) by Billy Paul. Of course we have «Ain't no stoppin' us now» by McFadden & Whitehead in its 10+ minutes form. Frantique's «Strut your funky stuff» version is the UK remix (5:45 instead of 6:15) and Jean Carn's «Was that all it was» is the original 12" version (6:27 and not 7:44 like it's written on the cover). Talking about Jean Carn, why do we have «Don't let it go to your head», a 1978 song in its lp form (no 12" is available anyway) and not «What's on your mind», a 1979 song extended to 5:45 for the 12"s B-side of «Was that all it was» ?
THE Philadelphia International 12" singles collection........2006-12-01
Philadelphia International Records began making "Disco" records long before anyone defined the genre and this superb collection brings us the extended 12" single versions of all-time classics by such legends as The O'Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, Jean Carn, The Jones Girls, Jerry Butler and Lou Rawls (among others) as well as some relatively obscure tracks by little-known artists. Tony Rounce's extensive liner notes are both very informative and round out the package nicely. This 2-CD set is a perfect choice for getting any party started and is also a "must-have" for your collection.

Customer Reviews:
Been A Long Time..........2002-08-03
For fans of Jerry Butler, and for soul music fans in general, the wait for this release was interminable. The Mercury anthology
on Jerry gave us a little taste of what we needed, but this CD is
the Real Deal: a feast for the heart, the ears, and the feet! "The Ice Man Cometh" was a masterpiece that deserves to be on people's 10-best lists. It was chocked-full of hits (five charting singles, two of which topped the Soul chart), memorable B-sides, and other standout performances. The album celebrated the union of Butler with the production team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff; a union that made pure magic. Gamble and Huff had been
established via associations with The Soul Survivors and The Intruders, among others, but they jumped at the chance to write with Jerry, a pro's pro of a singer with a long-and-strong pedigree, dating back to his days with The Impressions. The first
single they put out, "Lost" hit the Soul top 20 and was impressive enough as a debut. Then came, "Western Union Man," which shot to #1 and became an instant classic. "Never Give You Up" was a classic in its own right, with Jerry instructing his moonlighting girlfriend, to tell the new guy that "Jerry said he'll never let you go!" "Are You Happy" was a breezy reflection
on the "what goes around comes around" theme. The final single release was forced, since the jockeys started playing it right off of the album to satisfy requests. "Only The Strong Survive" had a strong message, indeed; a universal message, whether your trouble is with the opposite sex, unemployment, racial prejudice,
or what have you. "You gotta be strong; you gotta hold on" was a powerful statement at the end of the turbulent sixties, especially for Black Americans both male and female. "The Ice Man Cometh" was a huge step for Gamble and Huff and their Philadelphia Sound. Their trademark elements are on full display here, like Huff's gospel-drenched piano on "I Stop By Heaven" or Vince Montana's vibes all over the album; and the streetwise lyrics with Whopper-sized messages. The album did so well that the association could only continue. So included in this package is the entire "Ice On Ice" album, with its own slew of memorable
tracks ("Moody Woman" "A Brand New Me" "Don't Let Love Hang You Up" "Walking Around In Teardrops"), and the couple of Gamble-Huff-Butler tracks that survived for the next album. This hit-making team was broken up due to a dispute over royalties (Gamble
and Huff claiming that Mercury held out on them). Kenny and Leon
moved on to other outside projects (Archie Bell), inside projects
(The O'Jays on the short-lived Neptune label), and finally, to the establishment of Philadelphia International Records. Jerry continued to record for Mercury for several more years, became even more involved in producing, songwriting, and developing new talent, and, eventually, wound up on Philly Int'l himself. One of
the albums he recorded at P.I.R., "The Best Love," is easily his best work post-Mercury. Jerry is, today, a very successful politician in his native Chicago.
The Dawning Of The Philadelphia Sound !.......2002-01-14
This is a long overdue cd containing two albums Jerry Butler released in the late Sixties . The albums are " The Ice Man Cometh " and " Ice On Ice " and they`re rightly regarded as underground soul classics . The songs on these albums are the equal to any of the Jerry Butler classics that he recorded in the early Sixties for Vee-Jay records , but what marks them out as important recordings is the fact that Jerry Butler co-wrote the songs with the young , up and coming songwriting duo , of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff , who also produced the albums .
The following decade would see Gamble and Huff dominate the airwaves and charts with the classic Philadelphia sound . Bands such as The Ojays , Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes and many others would have countless hits throughout the Seventies with the Gamble/Huff midas touch . This cd is the blueprint for everything that was to follow , the Gamble and Huff sound is already in place , the songs are bona-fide Philadelphia classics , and if there was any justice they should have catapulted Jerry Butler to superstardom alongside The Ojays , Billy Paul etc , but alas , it was not to be .
This essential release also has three added bonus tracks that are as majestic as the rest of the material found on this cd . It deserves to sell a million , but somehow I doubt it !

Climb on Board.......2005-12-24
Starting out in Ohio as The Mascots, Walter Williams, Robert Massey, William Powell, Edward Levert and William Isles signed with Gamble and Huff and the pop staples "Backstabbers" and "Love Train" were born. Massey and Powell left the group and Sam Strain was brought in. "Use ta be my Girl" was one of the later hits with this lineup. One correction from another review. The O'Jays recorded "Livin' For the Weekend", Loverboy's tune was "Working For the Weekend" from the "Get Lucky" album.
Came for Money, left with the Weekend!.......2005-05-09
Bought this for The Apprentice theme song, "For the Love of Money" (which ROCKS) and ended up LOVING the song, "Livin' For the Weekend"! It's NOT the testesterone-fueled hit song by Loverboy, but a slow jam that builds and then blusters then slowing fades like a great weekend journey should!
Other standouts are "Love Train" amd "Give the People What They Want," pions to global peace, love and harmony with wicked hooks and grooves reminiscent of the band War.
This collection is PERFECT for those who want to hear the "Money, Money, Money" theme in full, and then stay for a perfect box of aural chocolates--not too many, all of them tasty!

what voices these brothers have and the force to lay something on your mind. together with the genius of Gamble&huff they created timeless enjoyable and social aware music.i agree with the other reviewer about i love music but still hearing soul music like this is so good you can buy all there stuff and it sounds solid.
Decent but Incomplete Collection.......1998-06-27
The really big pop hits are here, with one curious exception: "I Love Music" is absent. Although the song can be found easily on other CDs, especially 70s collections, it is a mysterious omission on an otherwise affordable and satisfactory CD. All original versions, no liner notes.

Music of the people.......2005-04-23
On Eagles Wings is most definatly inspired.... Latin Music is great if you understand itm but I have not heard any conversations in Latin lately. The most important aspect of liturgy is the participation of the assembly and if the assembly (or most of it) does not understand what is being sung or said What's the use? Catholic Tradition is great kept alive on CD for those who want to walk down memory lane but it is a Vatican 2 church......deal with it or get out and join one of those rougue churches that say mass in Latin and stop trying to move backwards. There is nothing more powerful than a singing actively participating church.......let's not stiffle the voice of the Body of Christ.
Good But Not Haunting Or Mysterious........2005-02-27
Hello, this music is good but it is not haunting, mysterious,Otherworldly,or timeless like Gregorian Chant or The Latin Mass now all I can say is that we as catholics threw out 1400 years of beautiful music for junk like "On Eagles Wings".Though To the person who said they prefer this to the pre-vatican 2 dirge music you are very close-minded and devoid of art and beauty and judging by what you said you are part of what I call the weak generation of Catholics who are only catholic on paper and have no sense of history for your very beautiful and mysterious church. Most people from that generation see the catholic church only after vatican 2 and you forget about the past councils and teachings of the Catholic church and it's history,I mean there is a reason they kept it so long it was for it's goodness(if it was bad it would not lasted 1400 years) as a priest on EWTN said to those who say "That is so pre-vatican 2" "So was Jesus." You see Latin Is very Beautiful and Mysterious language and it is a very catholic thing I mean whats more catholic then Gregorian Chant or the Latin Mass it's timeless like the church itself we as catholics need to start reclaiming are heritage from the likes of liberal priest and bishops of the 60's generation regardless of what they say there do as you please Mass is not in the spirit of Vatican II which allowed the use of vernacular in the Mass but it did not intend for Latin and Gregororian Chant to disappear it said to preserve it and give it, it's proper place that is what has been the intention of every pope since including this one they have all encouraged the use of Latin and Gregorian Chant in the mass.
How can anyone one not like it,it's very beautiful and it's been around for 1400 years how can one say that singer songwriter stuff which no one will remember in 50 years be better then this it's like seeing heaven and saying you prefer the world(alot of people unfortunatly do this.) Though to ansewer the question of it being to sad yes it is very somber and mournful but thats because the sacrifice of mass is a very solemn ceromony it was never meant to be celebrated in rock or jazz or polka or any other abuses by certain clergy. If alot of these ignorant catholics only knew what took place at the mass they would understand. You know you should be proud of the fact you are catholic because we have many gifts the protestants don't have(In the sacrements, the liturgy, the art and the music.) So I say to you now even you prefer the vernacular have respect and appreciation of what came before you in are Holy Catholic Church. Oh by the way I am 19 about to be 20 and Vatican II was a good thing it retouched are faith as Cardinal Francis Aziz said. Though I believe many people misinterpret it.
I suggest watching EWTN alot or really studying your faith and I like both Novus Ordo And Tridentine Rite.
More of a rant not a review but these songs have there moments and there are many Vernacular songs I like.
Dominus Vobiscum.
Et Cum Spirtu Tuo.
Very Good Traditional Hymns.......2004-05-30
It sounds like you are in Church, and that is what I was looking for. I especially like the Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones, Peace is flowing like a river, and Let There Be Peace on Earth.
Some of the other songs were better done by other artists. Like Shepherd Me is done better by the original Marty Haugen. This version is good, but not as good as Marty's. And I was not particularly fond of this version of Amazing Grace.
Overall I would recommend you buy a copy for your collection. The songs which are good, are very good.
Disappointing.......2004-04-01
This CD was not at all what I expected. It sounds just like you are in Church. Every song is accompanied by an organ and most of them sung in soprano. The tempo of all the songs is very slow too! I was looking for something I could sing along to, not put me to sleep! On the positive side, there are some beautiful songs, I just wish they were sung more "up beat".
Yes, these are great Catholic songs.......2004-02-07
I grew up with the music of the St. Louis Jesuits and this CD is a good representation of the BEST. In the spirit of Be Not Afraid, I am Near You, on Eagles Wings are all songs I loved in high school, college, and adult life. We sing most of these songs regularly at Mass. These are pleasant renditions of inspirational songs that uplift - in my opinion they are far better than much of the dirge music pre-vatican II.

The Stylistics' three inexplicably underexposed PIR albums........2007-01-29
This 2-CD set includes three albums which The Stylistics recorded for Philadelphia International Records from 1980-83. The group was desperately in need of a career revival back then and such PIR stalwarts as Thom Bell, Dexter Wansel, Cynthia Biggs, Sherman Marshall and even Gamble & Huff themselves gave the group some great songs--but commercial success was (sadly) not in the cards. This IS, however, great music which is eminently enjoyable and highly recommended to all Soul fans.
Overlooked philly-gems.......2006-07-24
As it says in the booklet of this three(!)-disc compilation these three late 70 / early 80 records from The Stylistics are some of the most overlooked releases in all of the philly-soul catalogue.
The sound found here is your typical late 70:ies slick and groovy soul (at times flirting with disco). What makes this record so interesting is that the material is not at all as cliché as other albums from this period can be, the songwriting comes of as fresh and creative and contain a lot of tracks that really have a unique feeling to them.
If you're a fan of phillysoul or just late 70:ies soul than this compilation should not make you dissapointed. Personal favourites include "Call on you" and "It started out".

wrong photo on album!.......2004-07-14
I represent Gil Saunders, the former lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes. I have this CD and it is Gil's voice on all the songs in this CD. The photo that should be on this album cover should consist of Harold Melvin, Gilbert Saunders, Rufus(Fuss)Thorn, Bill Spratley, and Dwight(Blackey)Johnson. They are the performing artists on your CD. Gil took position as lead singer in 1982 into 1992.
Thank you for allowing me to comment.

Customer Reviews:
Great import.......2001-07-07
I got this CD just to have BIlly Paul's "Me And Mrs. Jones". But the fun part of having this double disc is just letting it track. "Do It Any Way You Wanna" sounds terrific, a song I had forgotten. It's the Philly sound of the 70's, a must addition to your collection if that's your thing.
Must Have.......2001-01-29
This is a must have CD for your collection.
