It seems like the terms catchy and punk shouldn't go together, but for the Offspring, they do. Listening to Ignition, one gets the sense of rage tightly controlled, powering the band's uptempo, driving material. While their sensibility is firmly punk, the Offspring have clearly borrowed from heavy metal for their chord progressions and guitar sound--check out the solos on "Nothing from Something" and "Forever and a Day." While this album didn't have the major-label success of its follow-up, Smash, all the ingredients that made that record a hit are here, if not quite as refined: angry, incisive lyrics; fast-driving rhythms; and--dare one say it--melodic chord progressions. It's easy to hear why Ignition was an underground hit and why the Offspring's later records, while somewhat diluted, have been so successful. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars The Offspring great again!!!.......2006-11-27

I don't know of any band in the history of heavy music which is loved by ther fans of all metal. From punk to death metal fans everybody loves the Offspring. It's amazing how few people realize that.

Ignition is somewhat different in sound but a gem nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars Don't f*ck with us, or we'll f*ck with you.......2006-03-12

That lyric pretty much sums up the attitude of "Ignition," the 2nd studio album released by the Offspring. This album is fast, unapologetic and angry, yet it remains somewhat tongue in cheek and playful. The kick off to the album, "Session," starts with someone dropping the f bomb many times in succession. While the album speaks of some very serious subjects, it also adds in some Sublime-esque grooves/laid back lyrics to break things up. The result? The Offspring's best album, far and away -- even trouncing the likes of "Smash" and "Ixnay on the Hombre." The combination of punk, rock 'n roll, rebelliousness and playfulness make for a varied, extremely engaging listen. On "Dirty Magic," the middle-eastern esque guitar riff works wonderfully, a la their mega hit "Come Out and Play." "We Are One" is a boisterous tune about a band of trouble making punks rebelling against conformity. The lyrics are catchy, and the song blazes along at a breakneck clip. "LAPD" is very much like Sublime's "April 29, 1992," talking about the Rodney King riots, and general corruption of the LAPD. The Offspring use a much harder riff and lyrics to convey their point, but both bands seem to share a similar view. "Hypodermic" is also similar of Sublime's many druggie songs, talking about shooting up and the like. The overall feel of the album is much, much edgier than their later work -- even "Smash" can't match the intensity of the lyrics and riffs present on "Ignition."

The album flows very well; never am I inclined to skip a song, even after listening to it many times. The song quality is quite good -- no super crappy sound quality that plagued their first release. This is not the same band that released "Americana," "Conspiracy of One" etc.; even if you're annoyed by those releases, as many are, I'd really recommend giving this a shot. If you love those releases, you definately owe it to yourself to check out where the Offspring came from. Best tracks: Session, We Are One, and Dirty Magic (my choice for best Offspring song ever).

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2006-03-08

This cd is just amazing. I mean you really can't say much that is negative about this cd. My favorite song is Dirty Magic, but all of these songs are just incredible. The Offspring's new music isn't bad it's just very differant. This cd actually reminds me a little of Nirvana so if you like Nirvana you'll probably enjoy this cd. But I was a hardcore offspring fan a while ago and this cd just makes me remember the good old days so if you're looking for some 90's grunge this is the cd for you.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautifully Crafted CD.......2006-01-27

Warning, if you are a crappy emo-listening "punker" do not go near this CD. Your ears don't deserve to listen to it :D.
That being said, like a previous customer said, this CD rocks so hard, it's crazy. I am a death/melodic/black/heavy metal fan and yet I still love this CD with all my heart. This and the self-titled are such great treats to the ears. I wholey recommend getting this CD if you miss the music of the old punk/grunge days.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant CD.......2005-12-20

i've been listening to The Offspring for about 3 years and own every album. This has to be one of their best cds ever released. This and the self titled are both tied for the best cd released by The Offspring. This cd is more raw than the newer ones, and is faster, which is better.

Here are the song reviews

Session - 10/10 One of the best songs by The Offspring, fast, short, and good lyrics.

We Are One - 9/10 I love the intro to this song. Its a great song overall.

Kick Him When Hes Down - 15/10 Best song on this cd. Has the coolest riff the Offspring have ever written.

Take It Like A Man - 8/10 Good song but just doesnt stand out enough.

Get It Right - 10/10 Excellent song. Great lyrics, great riff, great everything.

Dirty Magic - 10/10 Wow. What a song. This song actually took time to write other than that new sh*t we are hearing today. Great lyrics, great opening, great song.

Hypodermic - 7.5/10 Alright song. It's not bad, but something about it just doesnt jump out and grab me. Has a good drum opening. Chorus is alright but not as good as others. Still a good song.

Burn It Up - 7/10 Read above.

No Hero - 9/10 Great lyrics and a good riff = excellent song.

L.A.P.D - 20/10 Best song written by the Offspring. I can listen to this song 159030153 times and never get bored. Starts with a bass introduction then turns into a song thats message is basicly "F*ck the Police". This song was written about the Rodney King incident. Sad thing about this song, is that all the lyrics are 100% true.

Nothing From Something - 10/10 Good Song. Nice riff, lyrics and drumming. Very catchy.

Forever And A Day - 9/10 Amazing finisher. Good lyrics and a great riff. Very good singing by Dexter.

Overall, this cd is great and is reccomended to any Offspring fan.

If you like the newer albums, dont waste your time, this isnt for you, go listen to your crap music. If you like the old albums, like smash, self titled, inxay, then this is for you 100%.

Grade = A

PS: I listen to thrash metal and death metal and such, but I still love The Offspring. Theres No way you can't like the first 2 albums.

Brian Setzer is not what you'd call a forward-looking guy. For this veteran guitarist and vocalist, the question is how far back he directs his attention. After having spent a major chunk of the '90s delving into the jump-blues and swing of the '40s and early '50s, Setzer returns to the revved-up rockabilly that first earned him a following when he fronted the Stray Cats in the early '80s. Originality has never been Setzer's forte and here the inclination to borrow extends to his songwriting: "5 Years, 4 Months, 3 Days" lifts generously from Dave Dudley's trucker anthem "Six Days on the Road" and Heart fans will recognize the riff that ushers in "Hell Bent." Still, Setzer is ideally suited as a player and singer to stand-in for rockabilly pioneers Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran, which he proves here with the high-energy likes of the title track, "Hot Rod Girl," and, especially, the punky album highlight, "Get 'Em on the Ropes." "I guess I'm behind the times," he sings in "'59." With each album, Setzer confirms that's where he belongs. --Steven Stolder

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars IGNITION!.......2007-03-15

This is one of my favorite CDs of all time. It's an energized rockabilly extravaganza, with the commanding presence of Setzer's Gretsch, and his strong vocals leading the way. From the opening song, "Ignition", to the final song, "Malaguena", it doesn't let up. The stellar lineup includes Brian Setzer on vocal/guitars, Mark Winchester on stand-up bass, and Bernie Dresel on drums. For me, this is a CD I can listen to where I enjoy both the music and the stories being told in the songs. I can picture a rebel dude driving his hot `50s car or Harley with his babe by his side! My favorite tunes are, well, all of `em! Some highlights for me are: "Ignition", a straight ahead rockabilly rocker. "Hell Bent", a cool, Johnny Cash type tune with some really hot and fast rockabilly licks. I saw Brian perform it on Conan O'Brien and, my God, he was smokin'! "Hot Rod Girl", an upbeat rockabilly tune with some very tasty licks and probably one of my favorite solos by Brian. The CD closes with "Malaguena", a revved up version of the Spanish-classical tune. I remember learning the classical guitar finger picking version of the song from the book "Solo Guitar Playing" by Fredrick Noad, when I was beginning to play guitar, so I was surprised and happy to hear this song on the CD.
I did get the privilege of going to one of the live shows for this tour, and Brian and the guys were incredible.
So, if you like Brian Setzer, the Stray Cats, and `50s rockabilly with an updated energy, I think you'll love this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Think Stray Cats with more conviction.......2006-11-12

After being an integral part of the swing revival with the Brian Setzer Orchestra, Ignition! is a return to Brian Setzer's rockabilly roots. While the sound on this album is similar to his days with the Stray Cats, the performances have a lot more fire and passion. In fact, Setzer's playing has never been better than it is here. As for the songs, several of them are top notch as tracks like "5 Years, 4 Months, 3 Days", "Hot Rod Girl", and "Santa Rosa Rita", and the smoking title track would have fit right in on the Stray Cats' Built for Speed album. Other superb tracks include the nostalgic "Dreamsville", the rave up "Get 'em On the Ropes", and the very catchy and melodic "59." However, the album's greatest tracks are the faster ones where Setzer gets to wail. "Hell Bent" is a wicked tune where Brian starts solo with the vocal over some nasty licks before the band kicks the song into overdrive. "The Legend of Johnny Kool (Part 2)" outrocks its predecessor on the Brian Setzer Orchestra's Guitar Slinger album while the closing instrumental "Malaguena", with its roller coaster ride of moods, is another gem. Other tracks like "Rooster Rock", "Blue Café", and "8 Track" are pretty decent although the latter would have worked better without all the yodeling. All told, if you liked the Stray Cats but wished they rocked a little harder, Ignition! is the album for you.

5 out of 5 stars Grab your Gretsch 59!.......2006-06-20

This is Brian Setzer showcasing his over the top guitar wizardry and witty lyrical ability in near peak form. After spending most of the 90's with his big band orchestra, he takes a left hand turn back to his Stray Cat roots. Although 68CS is a three piece band, the comparison to the Stray Cats ends there.

From his snarling lyrics in "Get em' on the ropes" and "hell bent" to his country chops in a self parody like tune, "8 Track" to his blues influence in "Hot Rod Girl" and "Rooster Rock" this record is packed with creativity. He even manages to sneak in a little influence from south of the border with "Santa Rosa Rita" and the killer instrumental in "Madaguena" as the final curtain drops.

Brian's real genius is his ability to mix the styles of blues, swing, country, and jazz right on the fly. Add some light hearted lyrics and a nice supporting cast in Bernie Dresel and Mark Winchester, and you've got yourself a great rockin disc.

Although this should be on the shelf of every hard core rockabilly fan, it's friendly enough for casual to sit up and take notice. Brian Setzer continues his quest in keeping great rockabilly alive.

The only thing I wasn't too thrilled about is Brian seems to have no interest in creating another project similar to "Ignition." His follow up record, "Nitro Burnin Funny Daddy" was very personal, almost too bluesy, and the lyrics were a bit dark. In his next solo project, "Rockabilly Riot" Brian takes a whole other direction strips everything down, and gives us nice history lesson on the pioneers of rockabilly.

Although "Nitro Burnin Funny Daddy" and "Rockabilly Riot" have nice highlights, I still hope he taps the creativity he used to make "Ignition" to create another great rockabilly experience. So grease your hair, grab your Gretsch 59' and let Brian Setzer drive us and rockabilly into the future!

5 out of 5 stars Ignition.......2006-02-21

Ignition is a great CD for road trips. Feel good, rock n' roll, rockabilly is the only way to travel.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD! A must for any Setzer fan!.......2003-08-03

Although this is in the Rockabilly style, the sound is a little more grown-up than the Stray Cats stuff. Great CD. A must for any Setzer fan.

Description

What do people like about Johnny and his music? Fans will say…"What you see is what you get…great vocals, great songs and kick-ass music you can take to the bank!" Born in Phoenix, AZ, on 9/11/88, don't let the young age of this guitarist and singer/songwriter discount his talent and ability. He took to the stage at 15, and the past 3 years and well over 200 live shows are now his declaration of independence… Johnny has COME OF AGE! On 9/13/04, Johnny recorded his first CD "Live at the Pub" at the Iron Horse Pub in Wichita Falls. Released in April '05, "Live at the Pub" won Best Live CD of 2006 and Johnny won Texas Entertainer of the Year at the Payne County Line "Oklahoma Music Awards" in Stillwater. With over 2,500 units moved to date, "Live at the Pub" is still enjoying active sales at performances and over the internet. Johnny's first studio project, "IGNITION" was recorded in February '06 at Cedar Creek Studios in Austin. Produced by Mike McClure, this CD includes 10 new original compositions and is available at all Hastings book stores in northwest Texas and Oklahoma as well as on-line at lonestarmusic.com and Johnny's web site. With sales of the IGNITION project expected to far exceed the LIVE CD, Johnny is already 11 songs into the un-named 2007-08 project and continues to write and perform his music with a passion and energy appreciated by musicians and fans of all ages. Johnny started his career in February 2004 by opening for The Great Divide in Denton, TX. 5 out of 5 stars ignition, a strong start for bloc*star E.......2007-03-07

. . _ Loki and Raided, a few years ago I was skeptical; i couldnt believe this album would come to life. It's just that the majority of the time the rap game changes more thoroughly than the setbacks that are an inevitable part of the business. Over the past six months or so, though, I've seen Loki hitting the keys, networking the internet getting this move ready, to put this album out and the label initiated. And Ignition has come through shinning. Properly titled, properly put together, all hooks beats and features.. Loki and Raided bring heat and a hard, smooth sound. Loki puts together some hooks that I can genuinely feel; he's far more versatile than I remember him being on Siccmade Muzicc. This album touches all of the ranges, hard hitting on some of the tracks and laid back on others. I'd received this album via the mail from Amazon not but two days ago and I cannot stop listening. The features are on point, NOT filler. Zagg comes tight, which is nice to hear -- Loki and Zagg on tracks together again. Overall this album ranges the experience you'd expect from a tight album, every track and verse, this is a good purchase. The album is worth alone getting for the battle rap Loki thrusts at Ja for the Identity Theft, but it has so much more.. Big ups to the Big Raided Loc, we down, brother. We down. Keep the faith, maintain the strength, thanks for the inspiration. Loki, I'm appreciating the album, Homie. It's been a long time coming and the final product is T I G H T -Kabol

5 out of 5 stars Ignition.......2007-02-07

It has been over three years since the release of the last X-Raided album, and over two years since loki's last effort, but this album was definitely worth the wait. This album boasts the best production EVER on an X-Raided album, as well as stellar performances from all lyricists involved. This is the first album to be released on Bloc*Star, X-Raided's new imprint.

1. Ignition: A great opening track, this song features production from Epik and verses from X-Raided, Loki, and newcomer TA.

2. The Merger. This song is a duet between X-Raided and Loki, featuring production from The Shape. This song has to be one of the catchiest songs in the X-Raided canon. With chorus work provided by D-Dubb (who some listeners may recognize from his work with Brotha Lynch Hung, most notably on the track "Refuse To Lose" and That's What I Said"), this track boast an almost orchestral sound, with low cellos and a string section providing the backdrop. Classic!!!!!!!!!

3. Recruits. Produced by DJ Epik, this track has a martial, almost militant feel, which works well for the subject matter. The Trauma Unit (Sav Sicc, Bleezo and Skari of C-Way) are introduced on this song, which features background vocals from Loki, NoLove and The Shape.

4. D.O.A. This is a second part to a previously released X-Raided track. Features production from M.I. Jezzus. X spits fire on this one.

5. The Mission Satement. Another stellar production by Epik. On this track, Loki, X-Raided and TA represent for Blocstar.

6. A Dirty Job. Produced by Jay Are, who provided much of the production on Loki's last lp, this track has a smooth, mellow feel that recalls a lot of the classic bay are music, however updated for the 2000's. All lyricists spit fire on this track, and Nicc Blacc provides a soulful chorus.

7. Street Life Revisited. Produced by Loki and Jay Are, this track is another instant classic. Nicc Blacc's singing on the chorus gives this the feeling of the soul anthems of yesteryear, while X-Raided and NoLove talk about growing up on the streets. Straight banger!

8. Live At The Speakeasy. Producer Loki uses horns and polyrhythmic drums to give this beat an urgent, uptempo vibe. This track features D-Dubb spitting an entire verse (!) as well as appearnces from Loki and Devious. Possible party anthem.

9. Voyeurs. Produced by The Shape, this track has definite commercial potential. Loki speaks about strippers and the scene involved, while Nicc Blacc provides a stellar chorus. This song has an alomost "Hyphy" feeling to it.

10. Riders Club. This song is a classic! X-Raided, Loki and NoLove all spit hardcore gangsta lyrics over a hard-hitting beat from The Shape. This song is another that features an almost "hyphy" sound, production-wise. Classic chorus too!

11. Trouble So Hard. This track opens with NoLove spitting some almost socially conscious lyrics, followed by verses from Loki and Bleezo. All three lyricists speak about society and politics, making this another classic. The Shape's production features bluesy pianos and blues vocals in the chorus.

12. Identity Theft. Jay Are provides a tense, cinematic beat for this track, on which Loki speaks about "a certain someone" who is trying to use his name. This track features some of the best battle-oriented lyrics yet from Loki. This song seems to be about Ja Rule, who has been saying in the press that his "New name" is Loki. Needless to say, Loki rips Ja apart on this track.

13. Incarceraided. !!!! This track is certainly something that fans have been waiting for. Featuring an almost autobiographical narrative from X-Raided, the lyrics speak about his case and the trials of his life. D-Dubb provides a catchy and soulful chorus that perfectly compliments the song.

14. Exit Strategy. Featuring production from G-Macc, this song finds Loki, Zagg, and G-Macc all spitting narrative verses. The delivery of all three lyricists works well in this context.

15. This is the last track on the album. The production, courtesy of Jay Are is a perfect, almost mournful, canvas for this track, on which many affiliates and friends of X-Raided send dedication to him. Loki also sings on the chorus, which adds the perfect blend of sentiment and sorrow.

4 out of 5 stars Don't knock the mono mixes!.......2003-07-18

Generally speaking, I can agree with some other reviewers who note that this set could offer more value for its rather high cost. However, I totally disagree with those who feel the inclusion of mono versions of some tracks amounts to little more than "filler".
The mono tracks are, in fact, the original released versions of the songs represented here, as issued on 45-rpm vinyl single records. At the time the recordings were made, mono AM radio broadcasts were the medium through which most people first heard this music, and single records were carefully mixed to provide maximum sound from the low-fi radios many people owned.
Not only do the 45-rpm mono mixes still sound great, they can also differ significantly from the stereo versions. The emphasis on certain vocal or instrumental parts can be altered, and even the track length can be different. Frequently, the work went into mixing the "hit" songs in mono because 45-rpm records were a gold mine for record companies. Stereo mixes of the same tracks for LPs were often just an afterthought.
So boycott this collection, if you choose, because of its high price, but listen first with an unbiased ear to those wonderful mono versions of songs like "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit". They are well worth your attention.

2 out of 5 stars Jefferson Airplane Rips Off.......2001-08-28

Simple review of the new box set: 1. Does not contain all of the available albums, even though four CDs could contain at least six, if not seven records instead of four. I don't count the mono mixes as a true extra feature. In other words, this isn't a definitive set, and doesn't contain one of the best ones, Volunteers. 2. There is no new remastering, or rarities as is available on the single CD releases. 3. Price is very high for a set that contains essentially four records that weren't very long in the first place. The Simon and Garfunkel box set is a whole lot cheaper with five records plus rarities and remastered sound (as a comparison). 4. Any booklet included in the box set isn't worth all the extra money. No booket is, no matter now nice. 5. I'm a big box set fan, and enjoy collecting this type of product, but this one is for completists only who need the mono mixes (big deal). Recommendation: Buy it used, as it's not worth the retail price. Better yet, buy the individual CDs which aren't really expensive anyway compared to this box set. Avoid this set, and force the company to come out with a truly well thought out product.

4 out of 5 stars it's no secret..........2001-08-26

If you're a fan and don't own these CD's already, this is a great buy. Those who are expecting a box set with anything extra will be disappointed. This is strictly for those who recognize the Airplane as one of the seminal groups of the 60's and wish to enjoy their golden era.

3 out of 5 stars And one pill makes you......................2001-08-23

The Jefferson Airplane's first 4 LPs, remastered for your listening pleasure. The first two have both mono and stereo mixes. Historically interesting psychedelia, but was this box really necessary, at an outrageous price?

One pill makes you larger, and one pill makes you small, and the ones that RCA gives you, makes you greedier than all. Apologies to Grace.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre Fare (for Dischord).......2001-07-08

Whoever told Alec MacKay he could pass as a vocalist? This has gotta be one of the most excruciating CDs to listen to in my collection. While being a big fan of a lot of the stuff Dischord Records has put out,Ignition epitomizes for me the downhill slump much of punk rock underwent in the mid to late 80's. The music lacks pace and punch, the lyrics are embarassingly preachy, and the whole affair has a dour air to it. Granted, there are a few songs on here - "Anger Means", their cover of the Vibrators' "Keep it Clean", and a coupla more -that even Alec's voice can't completely decimate, but it's not enough to recommend this to anyone other than diehard Dischord completists. Hard to believe bassist Chris Thomson went on from this (mostly) dismal affair to front such amazing bands as Circus Lupus, Las Mordidas, Monorchid and Skull Kontrol. Check out those bands!

4 out of 5 stars Still don't know what my anger... means.......2000-02-15

I thought time and space had put the zap on this band, once one of the best the DC scene (God I hate those words) had to offer. But I put this compilation on recently and was actually surprised at how well it held its own after 13 years (! ). Take it from one who was glad to be there: Ignition were the real deal. The proof is in the music, a headfirst dive into atomic-powered songmaking, replete with emotion that would wilt any "emo" band around today; an agitated, bravely spoken, elegant mess of an album ("Machination") followed by one of the only truly flawless EPs ("Orafying Mysticle") and a few tidbits thrown in to boot. Listening to this CD and checking out the incredibly worthwile cover art & enclosures makes me miss them even more and does something I never thought a Dischord band would do to me: I'm downright nostalgic. An essential, important part of the foundation for what was to come.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album.......1999-10-20

For all the DC hardcore/emocore bands that went on to (relative) stardom, I'm always amazed that some of the very best didn't make it.

Ignition was one of the best. They managed to blend great, melodic, angry (angry!) tunes with hectoring social/political messages a la Fugazi (Ignition was fronted by Ian McKaye's brother, I believe) in a way that forced you get up move or howl along like a banshee.

I cannot recommend any DC hardcore album with more sincerity; only the late, great Rites of Spring could match these guys in emotion, urgency, and tunefulness.

5 out of 5 stars A hidden gem of a disc.......2006-06-15

I'll be honest with you, I had no idea who these guys were until I saw them live "back in the day". I never really cared for grungy-alt-rock. These guys, however, manage to capture the feel of the alt-rock movement, without abandoning melody.
In a perfect world, this disc would be up there with all the alt-rock 'greats'.
It deserves it.
And shame on the music industry for not making sure Lughead got their due.

No matter who you are or what you like, this CD is amazing. The guitarist on both of these CDS is almost as good as John Waite's lyrics. And the vocals the melodic classic voice of John Waite will never find you in a bad mood.If you like the classic vocalists of rock and the talent of the 80's when you could listen to every single song and not be disappointed you will love this CD. Great Vocals, music and lyrics with the right amount of Romance,Keyboards,Rock Guitar and imagination. It might even be the soundtrack to your life.

4 out of 5 stars Combination of an '80s obscurity with an '80s classic, pt. 2.......2003-05-17

After a solid, but not too mind-blowing solo debut with 1982's IGNITION, former Babys lead singer John Waite needed to take another tack if he wanted to be taken seriously as a solo artist. For his second album NO BRAKES (1984), he finally decided to create a single that would break him wide open, as well as perfect his performance on uptempo rockers which were pretty stiff on IGNITION. Granted, there are still some moments of unease on NO BRAKES, but overall, John seems to come up more successful on an album that helped make him one of the 1980s' fondest memories of pop music.

Of course, the main reason one would get NO BRAKES is for "Missing You", which topped Billboard's Hot 100 in late 1984, knocking out Tina Turner's "What's Love Got To Do With It" from its 3-week reign. Tina would later cover "Missing You" & very well, I might add. But John's version is still a classic, another equally rough-yet-smooth tune that boasted great lyrics along with its memorable instrumentation. Most of all, there's the voice, that wrenching instrument that rivaled Foreigner's Lou Gramm & Journey's Steve Perry for its anguish.

NO BRAKES also had a lot more success to speak of than IGNITION (whose main single "Change" finally reached the charts shortly after "Missing You"), and had two more hits with "Tears" & "Restless Heart". The former is another downhearted rocker that's still fun to listen to, especially its closing "I'm gonna cry you a river" coda. The latter is an acoustic-guitar-driven number that only peaked in the lower half of the Hot 100, but that is certainly no measure on its overall worth, especially since it's a song Waite wrote alone. Most of his best material had & still often comes from outside sources.

The album starts out somewhat inauspiciously with the rock-revved "Saturday Night". Perhaps John wanted a song to kick off the album in grand "beat you over the head with a guitar" style, but it sounds like it was recorded in one take without any room for improvement. Luckily, it lasts less than 3 minutes. "For Your Love" & "Love Collision" work somewhat better, but even they have their moments of stumbling.

NO BRAKES' other rockers are certainly steps up from that of IGNITION's. "Dark Side Of The Sun", "Euroshima" & "Dreamtime/Shake It Up" have John feeling a little more comfortable as gravel-voiced rocker, even if they do still have traces of the new wave polish that IGNITION had. "Euroshima", in particular, is a standout simply for being a rare stab at political commentary from a usually-just-entertaining artist like John Waite. The song was perfect for the political landscape of the 1980s, especially in John's homeland of Thatcher-era England. In fact, I can't think of one musician who was ever pro-Thatcher in the 1980s, which is strange considering her rather long tenure as PM.

Like it or not, NO BRAKES would prove to be John Waite's most successful album as a solo artist. The next time he would see the top of the singles charts would be as frontman for the supergroup Bad English, but while he would never see such heights again on his own, that's not to say he wouldn't see more artistically satisfying moments. In fact, record company politics would be the cause for most of John's commercial woes in the future. Before all that happened, NO BRAKES showed that John had a lot going for him, and even now, he could still have another such masterstroke within him.

4 out of 5 stars Combination of an '80s obscurity with an '80s classic, pt. 1.......2002-11-21

John Waite was one of those artists I remembered even back in his heyday in the mid-80s when I was no more than in preschool (I do have memories back that far). So of course, "Missing You" is one I vividly remember from its first appearance, especially its video that was both cutting edge & cliched for its time. However, that was all I heard from Waite & didn't even know that he was the voice of Bad English's #1 hit "When I See You Smile", but I still knew that he was one of the most distinctive & best vocalists of the 1980s. Having become a musical consumer more bent on buying albums than singles, most of Waite's albums were inexplicably out of print or with the case of recent ones like TEMPLE BAR (1995) & WHEN YOU WERE MINE (1997), record company shake-ups hindered their success & have been taken out of print long before their time. To see Waite's first two LPs IGNITION (1982) & NO BRAKES (1984) on CD for probably the first time was nothing short of a miracle for yours truly.

After the breakup of John's band the Babys in 1980, he seemed ready for a long, healthy solo career just from hearing his moderately-successful & overlooked work with the band. While power ballads & slick hard rock may have John's name all over it (therefore, easily dating it), you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone singing it better than Waite. His debut IGNITION was, as the liner notes state, not really a bad album, but it didn't have any standout tracks. In fact, "Change", which didn't even chart on its initial release (but peaked at #54 when it was re-issued after "Missing You" made him a star), is the closest thing to something memorable on IGNITION. It's a great song of course & the video was in constant rotation in the early days of MTV, but perhaps it wasn't the catch-all that would have made John a star right away. But that's not to say he didn't try his best.

Contrary to his days in the Babys when proto-power ballads were their forte, hard rockers are the focus of IGNITION & while that's all fine & good, they seem to lack a little variety. "White Heat", "Desperate Love", "Be My Baby Tonight" & "Wild Life" sound rather good individually, but in the context of the album, they sound too identical to really combine well. "Mr. Wonderful" showed a lot of promise with its music-hall-inspired piano, but its tongue seems to be too firmly in cheek to really go off well. The fact that John wrote most of these songs may be the reason why, for even with the Babys & later with Bad English, outside material was what he did his best work on.

The few ballads on IGNITION linger in the mind more after the album ends. "Going To The Top" & "I'm Still In Love" are alternately smooth enough to win over soft rock fans & still appeal to the volume-fascinated members of the rock crowd. This being 1982 & new wave's influence still being felt, synthesizers are on equal level with guitars on these & most of the other songs on IGNITION, which makes it a mystery why the album failed to find an audience on its release.

While his first attempt at going solo didn't have a lot of success to speak of, John Waite still showed even without the Babys he had potential & his voice would become one of the most recognizable of the entire decade. Yes, IGNITION was more than a little scattered & too samey to really produce a major hit, but its highlights like "Change" really deserved to make a better impression especially with MTV becoming the surefire way for a new artist to get on the charts. The commercial silence that greeted IGNITION initially caused John Waite's solo career to sputter before it had a chance to take off.

Next time out, John would finally break through & that album comes next in part 2 of this review.

2 out of 5 stars Review For Ignition Only.......2002-04-21

Whether with the Babies, Bad English or solo, Waite pretty much made the same indistinguishable corporate pabulum. This particular album sounds so eighties it seems almost to be a joke, but it was most definitely real includes the radio anthem 'Change', if you don't remember it, fear not, you ain't missin nuthin.

4 out of 5 stars GOING TO THE TOP.......2002-03-23

I remember my disapointment when the Babys split up and I was so happy to see IGNITION come out, along with a tour. If I were rating this set as individual releases I would give IGNITION 5 stars and NO BRAKES 4 stars. Waite's first solo was full of passion and very reminiscent of the Babys, while NO BRAKES was a much more polished work. The difference in ratings on the two is solely based on the number of songs I really enjoyed from each. I have to admit NO BRAKES had the biggest hit and airplay on radio and MTV, but that doesn't make it better, at least to me. I would love for every Waite album to sound like IGNITION, but then even that would probably become redundant.

I don't have the disc here in front of me, so, I will edit this a bit later, but IGNITION is full of great songs like "White Heat", "Change", "Going to the Top", and "Mr. Wonderful". Looking at NO BRAKES, I can only think of the huge single "Missing You". I really wish I could remember more titles, so, let me just say that IGNITION is electric, in my opinion, and combined with NO BRAKES is an excellent bargain at this price. Since it seems as though Waite's releases and the Baby's releases come and go, it might be smart to pick this up while it is available.

Album Description

Waite first achieved popularity and success fronting ex-pat hard rockers the Baby's, notching up two Top 20 US hit singles before breaking up the group to launch a solo career, a path that would see him score a US #1 single in 1984 with the plaintiff but hugely powerful 'Missing You'. Ignition, Waite's debut solo album was recorded in New York City in late 1981 and reflects a man awash with brave ideals and ruthless musical conviction. Upbeat, bristling with determination and extremely hard rocking, the songs reflect a man on a mission, delivered with one of the most concise productions of the era (courtesy of Pat Benatar guitarist Neil Geraldo). Widely acknowledged as Waite's greatest album, Ignition gets the full Rock Candy reissue treatment with a remastered clarity that will resolutely and undeniably confirm Waite's position as a rock vocalist extraordinaire. Includes 16 page color booklet with original and enhanced artwork with new photos and extensive memorabilia. 2005.

Great work.
Not too many soft songs:it's still rocking, not like the new stuff released after bad english.A lot of great songs like the unusual Mr Wonderfull.
I've seen him live in Holland on the two dates.
The only song from bad english was "when I see u smile"...a pity..
According to what Frontiers label says,he is gonna make energic rock.
It could be a good news but Waite added with no synth just stripped music....not sure this will please his fans.
A pity because this guy still has a wonderfull voice and his shows are worth seeing even if he is playing too many soft songs...
