This double CD collects not only Brother Ray's best-known '50s and '60s singles, but some choice semi-obscurities (the 1953 jump blues "Mess Around," his 1959 cover of Louis Jordan's "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Cryin'") that earn their places next to "What'd I Say" and "I Can't Stop Loving You." The man's originality and infectious feeling bleed through on each of these 36 tracks, whether he's transforming "One Mint Julep" or "America the Beautiful" or collaborating (separately) with Willie Nelson and Chaka Khan. --Rickey Wright

The best compilation on the market........2007-01-27
Other than Genius & Soul: The 50th Anniversary Collection 5-disc boxed set, "Ultimate Hits Collection" is easily the best Ray Charles compilation on the market. Its 36 tracks cover the years 1953-1989. It may be pricey, but you get a 50-page booklet, two individual jewel cases and an attractive slipcase. This set covers the ABC years as well, so Rhino probably had to shell out some big bucks to license those tracks. I'm glad they included "Mess Around", one of Ray's earliest hits, but I would've like to have seen 1993's "A Song For You" here as well.
Sherry.......2007-01-18
"Great CD. Would highly recommend. It's a great collection of all the hits. Other CD have a variation of songs, but if you want one with all hits, this is the one for you.
Soul .......2007-01-10
This collection contains Ray Charles' greatest hits. Among the favorites are 'What'd I Say' , 'Georgia on my mind' 'Ruby' 'Hallelujah I just love her so'. For me what is important is those songs which I have heard over and over again, and which the re-hearing of brings pleasure in. It is not important to me that all the songs have that quality. In fact even with the best people, like Ray Charles it is only a small portion of the total work which plays again and again in the mind.
Ray Charles had incredible soul and feeling. And it is that feeling which makes his music so moving and enjoyable.
Money Well Spent.......2006-09-16
I chose this collection for its wide range of Ray's career hits. Some of which I had never heard before, like "Mess Around." This was before the film was released of course. All time favorites of mine include, "What'd I Say" "One Mint Julep" "Night Time Is The Right Time" and "Hit The Road Jack." A true American Icon, Ray's genius continues through his recordings, for they are timeless. Not much else missing on this one.
Ray Charles Ultimate Collection.......2006-08-15
Very good album......can't say enough about it. Ray had such style in his music....I can listen to it over and over.

Well, Some of the Greatest.......2005-02-02
Writing about or talking about Ray Charles is a little like discussing religion or politics; pick your words carefully. Some of Ray's songs are better than others, no matter what kind of music you like. I don't think that more than 50-60% of the ones on this package are his "greatest". It is still a very listenable compilation because there are no bad songs and none are done badly. I just say that there are better compilations out there which include the REAL greatest hits that are on this package and some OTHER actual greatest hits based on career length sales. If you just like Ray doing ANYTHING, then you may give this five stars. I just resent that this packager got to use "greatest" when 'taint so.
Excellent selection of Ray Charles' versatility and talent.......2004-06-11
The marvelous Ray Charles lifted himself across generations; my jazz-loving dad used to crow loudly "RAY CHARLES!" when his music would come on the radio. Our generation, the Boomers, loved his hits in the 60's and 70's. Ray could do country, R&B, jazz, gospel, each in HIS style yet true to the genre. He was a titan--and he's now gone from us in 2004, I presume singing in heaven for the angels.
This album is notable for the variety, from pop hits with soupy 50's style string and voice backup arrangements, to jazz to country and plain old good R*B. It's really a good way to sample the best of Ray Charles. If you find a copy, you won't be disappointed. I like it a lot because it's a sampler and I don't get tired of listening to the entire album--it's changing from song to song to keep the ear interested.

"What'd I Say" may have given Ray Charles his first top 10 single, but it was this 1960 album that really solidified his commercial standing. It hit the top 10 on the strength of the massive sales of "Georgia on My Mind"; while nothing else here comes close to topping that particular song, there are a number of other fine performances, including "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny," "Basin Street Blues," and "New York's My Home." Charles takes a smooth, supper-club approach to most of the material, but only "Deep in the Heart of Texas" is really too hokey for its own good. Rhino's CD reissue adds several other geographically themed cuts from Charles's career, including "Rainy Night in Georgia," "Swanee River Rock," and a marvelously swingin' take on "Blue Moon of Kentucky." --Dan Epstein
Customer Reviews:
Ray Charles at his dead level best........2005-08-17
This CD/album is one I have had as a 33rpm vinyl record for many years--bought it new when it first came out.Sooo......, was tickled pink when I saw it in CD format. The songs are vintage Ray Charles and include the string/large orchestra that he made several albums w/ in the 70's. Brings these old tunes to life as really no one else could.
Ray poised for Superstardom.......2004-11-26
Thank Rhino for reissuing this overlooked album. This was his first after he split from Atlantic for ABC/Paramount. People like to think that his ABC/Paramount period starts with MODERN SOUNDS, but you can see the "road" Ray's traveling with this album. Most of the orchestration is done with a lot of taste and not syrupy as might plague some later recordings. These cuts sound classic today and not dated -- well, except for the silliness over Deep in the Heart of Texas.
Enjoy this album for more than Ray's signature tune of Georgia on my Mind, Ray's solo on Moon over Miami, for example. The bonus cuts complete the experience. This album will help bridge those who only know Ray from his Atlantic years into the rest of his career - about a 40 year period!
It sucks the soul right out of him.......2002-03-20
The orchestrations and chorus present on all of the regular tracks intended to make him more palatable to a wider audience suck the soil right out of Ray Charles' performances. This is particularly evident when you hear the bonus tracks. The bonus tracks are fabulous, but I'm sure you can find them on another Ray Charles album.
1959 REISSUE AND MORE.......2001-06-18
After awhile, Ray Charles starts sounding like a spokesperson for 'Travel in America' as each 19 songs on this CD speak of hittin' the road and visiting, not the musical road less travelled, but the swinging nightclubs and hot spots where Steve and Eydie Gormet may be the opening act. We're reminded what a great hit single, "Hit the Road Jack", was, an explosion of anger at the heat of a romantic conflict as the vocals scream and demand in two part melody. The first twelve songs are the original tracks from his 1959 album, "The Genius of Ray Charles", and the transfer to CD has left them sounding a little hollow like Charles is singing from another room. One suspects the vocals were sung over at the time this album was compiled. The Bonus Tracks are much better but hey! did I say something negative about this cool laid-back groovy album? You have to hear the half spoken/half vocal call and response of "New York's My Home", as Charles grinds his gravelly voice over his blues/pop piano and wins any argument against New York City. "Georgis On My Mind" is also here and a less grave "Rainy Night In Georgia", where Charles even hiccups over a drink in the fade out of the vocal tracks. Now that's casual.
The Genius Does It Again !!!.......2000-08-10
Theme albums don't always work according to plan. Don't take my word for it. Just listen to Carly Simon's "Film Noir" or k.d.lang's "Drag" and you'll catch my drift. But with the genius plotting the course, it's money in the bank you won't go astray. This album contains some of the absolute swingingest Ray Charles this side of Chattanooga. Dig Ray's heartfelt reading of Moonlight in Vermont or Georgia On My Mind. And wait until you hear him yukin' it up on Deep In the Heart of Texas and my favorite New York's My Home, where he applies just the right amount of gleeful good humor. Hit the road runnin' and pick up on this one. It's a sure fire winner.

Well, I AM a Ray Charles fan but I don't know why this redundant CD was compiled. Not all of the songs match the appeal of the songs on his Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music and its sequel album (although a few of the songs here can be found on the original album <a smash hit>). These are, as best as I can remember, songs associated with country singers and/or songwriters Hank Williams (1 thru 3), Don Gibson (4,5 & 14), Eddy Arnold (6 & 8-and possibly 7; prolific songwriter Cindy Walker contributed to #8), Louisiana governor and musician Jimmie Davis (#9--NOTHING like the original but GREAT!), Floyd Tillman (#12), Texas Playboys leader Bob Wills (#15), Kenny Price (#16) and Ferlin Husky (#17). "Someday (You'll Want Me to Want You") was done by such diverse singers as Gene Autry, Vaughn Monroe, Patsy Cline, the Mills Brothers and Della Reese. "Careless Love" I can only relate to Spade Cooley of the 50s, a man with a rollercoaster career and a resemblance to the original Roy Rogers. The songs in this CD are ok once they are put through the Ray Charles process, but to me seem to be put together randomly without a real theme like the orignal C&W album.

Seven Spanish Angels Worth the Price of the Entire CD.......2004-07-19
I remember in my youthful drinking days that the bartenders knew when to start calling the cabs...it was the 7th chorus of Seven Spanish Angels.
Hearing that song again sung by the Genius Charles and the master Nelson brought back so many memories.
They make it a beautiful wondrous song once again.
Reissue of country duets album.......2003-10-01
Most of the albums in the Super hits series of albums are greatest hits collections, but this is a straight re-issue of Ray's 1984 album of duets with country singers, originally titled Friendship. It was originally released on vinyl, then later on CD with the same artwork. That version of the CD was replaced by this album, but the title Super hits is very confusing. (More recently, the album has been re-issued again, this time with the original artwork and title but re-mastered and with two bonus tracks.)
It is fitting that Ray should have recorded this album - after all, he recorded R+B versions of country songs back in the sixties and took them high in the pop charts including I can't stop loving you, a number one in Britain and America. Those records didn't sound country, but twenty years later, here is Ray singing country and having a great time doing it.
The big hit here (a country number one) is Seven Spanish angels, the duet with Willie Nelson that closes the album. I love all the songs but I particularly like Who cares (with Janie Fricke, the only female singer featured), Two old cats like us (with Hank Williams Junior) and We didn't see a thing (with George Jones and Chet Atkins). Other guests include Johnny Cash, B J Thomas, Ricky Skaggs, Merle Haggard and the Oak ridge boys.
This is an upbeat country album that shows just how talented Ray Charles was - one of the few singers equally brilliant in several different genres of music.
My entire family's favorite album!.......2003-06-14
Young or old you just won't be able to resist the great energy of this album!
Even the more soulful cuts will leave you taping your toes. Get it today. :-)
Country, Country, Country..........2001-11-22
My favorite part of this CD is the first fifty seconds of "This Old Heart". I was looking for recent blues work and discovered Ray Charles from Tony Bennett's "Play'n With My Friends...". I immediately wanted to hear more of that kind of Ray Charles, but this release is all C&W style. If you don't like the C&W style then you probably won't enjoy this. Not to say the performances aren't excellent. Next time i'll, bite the bullet and install RealAudio so that I can listen to the song samples BEFORE purchasing.
AWESOME CD.......1998-10-30
This CD is one of the best CD's I've ever purchased. If you're a Ray Charles fan, it's a must for your collection. Also, it's extremely hard to find in stores.
