Following the demise of B*Witched, the Irish pop world was looking for a new young female to step into the fray. Enter Samantha Mumba, with her sparkling debut single "Gotta Tell You," which went straight to the upper echelons of the U.K. pop charts in the summer of 2000. Her debut album of the same name opens with that track, swiftly followed by her second single, "Body II Body" which came with David Bowie's seal of approval--he allowed her to heavily sample "Ashes to Ashes" for its central loop. The rest of the material is an even mix of sweet R&B and upbeat infectious pop, which beguile and enchant the listener. Gotta Tell You is an extremely confident debut, closing as it does with a rousing cover of the Motown standard "Signed, Sealed, Delivered"--a feat few girls Samantha's age could carry off with such aplomb. Debut albums rarely come this consummate. --Helen Marquis

Great CD!.......2005-08-07
A must buy! My favorite song on it is, Baby, Come Over (This Is Our Night).
Pretty Good Album.......2005-07-29
The first time I knew about Samantha was her music video "Gotta Tell You" and I had no idea that she was Ireland at the time. I haven't heard about her since three years ago. I remember seeing her in a music video as some firefighter. Wasn't she supposed to release a cd that same year? Well, 4 years later I finally get to listen to her first cd. Here's my review:
1. Gotta Tell You- the single that started it all. 5/5
2. Baby Come Over- I remember every time I would hear about this song...the title would remind of Christina's Come On Over Baby 4/5
3. The Boy 3/5
4. Don't Need You To Tell Me I'm Pretty- umm...it's okay 3/5
5. Always Come Back To You- Great! 5/5
6. Feelin Is Right-5/5
7. Body II Body- I love this song! 5/5
8. What's It Gonna Be- Okay...4/5
9. Never Meant To Be- The best so far, a beautiful ballad...5/5
10. Isn't It Strange- Really cute 5/5
11. Lately- This song sound so familiar....who sings this song again??? 5/5
Overall, I give this album 9.5/10
A Really Solid Pop Album.......2005-04-19
Samantha Mumba's debut album is loaded with catchy pop tunes and decent vocals. It's got good beats, and typical lyrics. The thing is, that's what the whole album is. Typical. It sounds like loads of other pop albums. But hey, pop music is great, so why change it?
1. Gotta Tell You - The album's biggest hit. It's got a good melody and is all-around catchy. 10/10
2. Baby, Come Over (This Is Our Night) - Another hit. Good vocals, catchy tune. I like it. 9/10
3. The Boy (Remix) - I like the intro, but that's about all. Not much happening here...5/10 (for the intro)
4. Don't Need You to Tell Me I'm Pretty - I think this one is sort of boring. I guess it's pretty, but, you know. Blah. 6/10
5. Always Come Back to Your Love - Another great track. It's upbeat and fun. Catchy chorus. 9/10
6. Feelin' Is Right - Not the best, not the worst. It's good enough for a listen or two. 7/10
7. Body II Body - Another hit. It's got a good beat and cool lyrics. Funky in a good way. 9/10
8. What's It Gonna Be - Reminds me of Always Come Back to Your Love. Not quite as good, but still fun. 8/10
9. Never Meant to Be - A really pretty ballad. It's relaxing after the bouncey songs. 8/10
10. Possibly my favorite song on the album. Energetic and fun. Amazingly catchy. 10/10
11. Lately - Another good one. A perfect close to the album. Great on a summer day. 9/10
Gotta Tell You is a great album for lovers of pop music. It's got a few so-so songs, but all of the catchy ones make up for them. Overall Rating: 9/10
HOT ALBUM FROM A HOT ARTIST.......2004-10-28
This CD sounds so good, it is the best international album i have ever heard. Right now I am suffering from Samantha withdrawls cuase it has been about 2yrs since this release. buy it you wont be sorry
I've gotta tell you..........2004-07-06
If there ever debuted a Britney soundalike in the wake of the late '90s female teen pop boom it would be this girl. But with Samantha Mumba's Gotta Tell You producers finally got a darn good piece of fluff. From its dark "Gotta Tell You" to its chanty "Lately," GTY is a close-to-perfect pop record, full of everything that previous producers for Britney, Christina, Jessica and Mandy forgot. Mumba's pop/R&B CD is a worthwhile purchase for any pop music fan. Whether or not Samantha has a good album isn't the question; it's whether or not she can keep up and not be overshadowed by teen queens Britney and Christina!

The other version is ultimately better, buuuut...........2005-04-24
This version of Samantha Mumba seems like an indefinitely out-of-date, unpolished, unhip counterpart of its worked-over more recent version which has far more attractive, colorful cover art and the polished radio pop remixes of "Baby Come Over" and "The Boy." Which version you will prefer, however, relies heavily on your taste. This disc leans far more towards R&B and hip-hop, while the reworked version with the yellow and red cover is pretty much pure pop. I prefer the other version because it's just more fun and twice as infectious, but like I said, it depends on your taste. The original version of "Baby Come Over" is actually cool in its own way-I could picture it on black radio, while the fizzy pop remix fits white pop radio best.
This new edition is even better than the first one!.......2004-05-23
I have both the brown-cover 11-track version and this one. The main difference is that this one has the songs "The Boy", "I Don't Need You To", "Stand By Your Side", "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" and a cool remix of "Gotta Tell You"; this version of "Always Come Back To Your Love" doesn't include rap and this album has the radio / video version of "Baby Come On Over" (often called "Baby Come On Over, This Is Our Night"), which is much better. It doesn't have "Lose You Again" and "Never Meant To Be", but those are not exactly the best on the album, so you won't miss them that much (even though I won't classify them as fillers).
"The Boy" features Sam's cute little brother Omero Mumba.
One of my favorite albums ever.......2004-05-23
I don't know how many different editions of this album exist; mine, which has the same cover as this one, has the tracklisting Gotta Tell You - Body II Body - Baby Come On Over - Isn't It Strange - Lately - What's It Gonna Be - Always Come Back To Your Love - Lose You Again - Feelin' Is Right - Never Meant To Be - Believe In Me - Til The Night Becomes The Day.
This is one of the few albums which I can listen without skipping any of the tracks. It has everything: up- and midtempo songs, pop, r'n'b, ballads, love, loss, sadness and happiness. It seems to me that all the emotions Sam ever has felt are represented on the CD: from the happy love of "Always Come Back To Your Love" to the sad tunes of "Never Meant To Be" and "Lately", the sexy "Body II Body", the encouraging "Feeling Is Right". I wonder how can such a young girl know so much about emotions. (A question to Sam: Are all the lyrics written by you?)
The song "Gotta Tell You" was a good choice as a first single; both the music and the lyrics are drawing attention.
My special favorite on the album is "Til The Night Becomes Day". This is a song which can lift my spirit when I'm down (the only other song which makes me feel this way is Mariah Carey's "Can't Take That Away"). "Don't be afraid to fly, rise up and touch the sky, just like a butterfly" sings Sam and it all comes straight from her heart.
The version of "Baby Come On Over" is not the radio / video version, and "Always Come Back To Your Love" is the rap version.
(A hint: look out for Sam's singles, sometimes they contain songs which aren't on the album.)
A talented Irish girl with a great voice.......2002-12-28
Samantha Mumba was dubbed 'the next big thing' when she released her debut single "Gotta Tell You". Boy, were they right! She is a smash hit all over the world,(including the oh-so-hard to crack America) and her current single "I'm Right Here" is fantastic! But it all had to start somewhere. Her debut album is brilliant, and Samantha's vocals sound great. Stand out tracks on this album:
2. Baby, Come Over - I have the CD with the original on it, but I also own the single to this. This is one of my favourite Sam Mumba singles. I love the middle 8 and Sam's vocals sound great on the verses and chorus.
5. Always Come Back to Your Love - My favourite. This is very RnB influenced with a cool rapper in the background. I love the chorus, it's so addictive.
6. Feelin' Is Right - A cheeky, naughty song with a great chorus and verses. Samantha is in love with her friend, but he's too shy to say anything! You tell him, Sam!
7. Body II Body - Another naughty song with cool lyrics and a catchy chorus.
9. Never Meant to Be - A beautiful piano driven ballad. Samanatha's voice sounds amazing on this song. I love this, it's so gorgeous!
10. Isn't It Strange - Refreshing, happy little track. It's upbeat, smiley and dancy.
My CD unfortunately doesn't include the two tracks "Boy" and "Don't Need You To Tell Me I'm Pretty", but I HAVE heard them, and I can safely say they're awesome!
Samantha is very talented, and I hope her new album is out soon. This just isn't enough Sam for me! Go Sammy!
everyone is a critic.......2002-10-17
Samantha Mumba would be just another pop singer if it wasn't for a unique twist in her music. Her lyrics are mainly about boys and her various love interests. In these regards, she is no different from any other Britney Spears pop culture singer. However, she manages to keep a certain spicy, upbeat rhythm to her music that keeps her apart from the main pop singers. Mumba's CD consists of two types of music - the "slow dance" and the faster paced, dance team style. While her first song "Gotta Tell You" was a great dance track, the second was a little monotonous and slower paced than the first. The entire CD switches off from one style to the other, but still entertains more than it annoys. I would give it three stars out of five.

Irish pop-R&B singer Samantha Mumba has tried to distance herself in interviews from the likes of her teenage peers Britney and 'N Sync. Unfortunately, her resistance to embrace that side of music has led to an album without a strong theme or voice to distinguish Samantha from the rest of the pack. Her voice is lovely, and songs like "Gotta Tell You," "Believe in Me," and the odd, Bowie-sampling "Body II Body" are frothy enough to pack the dance floor, while "Lately" swoons perfectly and "Isn't It Strange?" has a fantastic, swirling atmosphere reminiscent of a carnival. The rest is filler that always sounds vaguely like some other better-known song. Given stronger songs and production, Mumba (with her exotic looks and strong-but-not-showy vocals) will be a U.S. superstar. Until then, she'll just have to settle for being promising. --Ally Kearney
Customer Reviews:
Relatively Good Debut.......2001-03-20
Samantha Mumba's debut CD actually has some really good tracks on it. Gotta Tell You is the mainstream hit that almost everybody has heard by now, Baby Come On Over is the unbelievably catchy highlight and Body II Body is horrible the first time, but quickly grows on you until you love it. True, The Boy is very repetitive and Lately is boring, but for the most part this album is not to be missed, especially if you like Top 40 pop. I cannot wait until the next album!
Gotta Tell You that it's great!.......2001-03-20
I've only heard this album from a friend- I don't actually have it. All the songs stand out on it. Samantha has a great voice, unlike any of the Britneys and Christinas. She's got a talent for writing songs, too. I hope she comes out with a follow-up just as good as this one!
Definite Europop from a promising new artist..........2001-01-27
A newcomer who's already a big hit in Europe, Samantha Mumba's debut album brings us dance pop that's edgy and more R&B than Britney and the gang. While a good CD, its only drawback is its lack of standouts. `Gotta Tell You' was the most obvious radio single...the rest are nice, but sound a bit similar to each other. This comes from a few of the songs, while being upbeat and catchy, lacking more creative themes and lyrics (how many times can you rhyme "tonight" and "right," anyway?) This is an enjoyable listen, though as with any singer, there's always room for improvement.
Some Hits and Misses:
1. Gotta Tell You - her first single, and the best song on the album. It hit #4 on the charts with its catchy beats and hooks, and it's one of the few songs on the air right now that actually seems to have a point to it: "Don't wanna love you if you don't love me/Don't wanna need you if you won't need me too..." (5/5)
2. Body II Body - a hit in Europe, but as far as I'm aware has not been released in the US... *Kimmie pauses to read other reviews* ...a David Bowie remake? ...*pauses to check the CD case*...why, yes it is. What do you know, Amazon.com reviews teach you something new everyday. :-D
Anyway. The song itself isn't bad, if a bit stereotypical in its message...it's your average party song. (4/5)
5. Lately - I never liked this song when it was first released by Divine (personal preference, feel free to disagree), so my opinion is biased here. Suffice to say that I agree with the other reviewers that it was too early to do a remix of this song. (2/5)
7. Always Come Back to Your Love - There's just something likable about this song. I think it's the heavy beat compared to the softer vocals. With its relatively simple lyrics, this is one of those "filler" songs that you wish every singer had. (5/5)
8. The Boy - track eight seems not to have fared well on either sides of the Atlantic. On the US release it is called "The Boy," and is way too repetitive and senseless for my tastes. (1/5)
9. Feelin' is right - one of the better dance songs, this one might do well as a single if it was just a tad more creative. (4.5/5)
10. Never Meant to Be - The lone ballad...I don't count "Lately." ^_^ But an excellent addition to the album that features her voice well. (5/5)
If you like standard pop, I recommend this album. Though it would be wise to use `Body II Body' as your measuring stick rather than `Gotta Tell You,' because that's the sound the album follows (Europop) and if you like that, you'll like the album. The CD has gotten fairly good magazine reviews, if you like to judge by that angle...and Samantha herself co-writes seven of the songs, if you value that. If you're a fan of pop music or female vocalists, you'll probably like this album...just place the emphasis on pop. Otherwise...well, to sound like a stodgy schoolmarm, "Samantha is not living up to her potential." While she does has the potential to be a "baby diva," as she refers to herself in one of her songs, cross your fingers that she expands on her sophomore release. If so, that's when she'll be the full-fledged diva, and I'll be first in line for the album.
I Give Her Effort...but..........2001-01-25
No, no, no, no! I mean, I give her credit for trying to pursue her dream, but why pursue it if you sing like a retarded cow and look like one too? She looks like one of those starving children on those commercials with a good hairdo. Besides that, her vocals are weak and blank sounding.
Samantha Mumba is one of the Best New Artists of 2001.......2001-01-21
On budding teen pop/R&B diva Samantha Mumba's debut album, "Gotta Tell You" the newcomer displays the seasoned professionalism of such "veterans" as Monica, Christina Aguilera and even Britney Spears. Mumba's energetic, danceable hit single, "Gotta Tell You" leads off the album and really shows off Mumba's voice and sexy lower register, reminiscent of the divine Toni Braxton. The remainder of the album however is mostly filler pop tunes with some of the songs standing out from the pack. Songs ranging from the bubblegum pop extreme of "Always Come Back To Your Love" and "Believe In Me" to the addictive hooks of dancefloor ditties like "Body II Body" and "The Boy" show off Mumba's range as a pop/dance artist. But the lack of solid material also hinders the release, "Til Night Becomes Day", "Feelin' Is Right" and the unnecessary remake of R&B group Divine's #1 hit "Lately", all seem like retreads from early 90's era music from Cathy Dennis or Paula Abdul. Samantha however overcomes her at times weak material with a style all her own, which is quite an accomplishment in today's cookie- cutter driven pop market. Her career will most definently go places if she could get pass the juvenile songs and become a full fledged pop diva a la Janet Jackson.

This song was a huge hit in the USA and in the UK. I don't know why it flopped in Austria.
It's a song made for the charts but still with class "Can it be love" is similar. "Where does it end now" is a little bit slower but very nice and with good lyrics.

Whatever happened to this Irish talent? She's got an incredible voice and an interesting sound.
I wonder what happened to her?!
Anyways...the song is incredible and very catchy. I think it sounds awesome.
The remix is interesting. You can kind of hear the lyrics in the background, but you kind of have to "strain" your ears. I kind of wish that they'd have put a different remix on here that features Samantha's amazing voice. But they didn't. C'est la vie!
Anyways...this is a great song and definitely deserves 5 stars!

This song rocks, as I'm sure many of you know. It's a little overplayed on radio stations, but that does not make it a bad song. It was written really well and Samantha Mumba has an awesome voice. I think it's cool how she does the low "more mature" sound and then just goes into her regular singing voice. It shows exquisite talent and a good range for someone so young. I definitely think that if Samantha has more songs like Gotta Tell You, she'll be a major star.
Great Single!.......2000-12-25
At first I didn't like this song but it started to grow on me and what can I tell you this song is amazing samantha mumba is great singer and sure be the next pop senstation. I was suprised to hear that she succeded in the usa besides uk and that shows how the usa audience is impressed from her. Anyway this song is brilliant and very catchy.
My favorite song of 2000........2000-12-24
This song is the my fave of the year! Sam is the best new talent we in the US have seen in awhile, her voice is incredible! AND she co-wrote this! I hope she has major success with her next single "Baby Come On Over" also, which is another of her best.

Pure talent. Delightful song. An awesome party song. Those are just a few phrases to describe this incredible song. I absolutely love "Gotta Tell You" -- it's one of the top choices of Pop music in my opinion right now. Samantha Mumba is like the next Britney Spears or the next Christina Aguilera. Samantha's got the voice of Christina and the personality and looks of Britney. All three are fantastic artists and I hope Samantha is recognized as a true, real artist and not just a wannabe of Christina Aguilera or Britney Spears. She definitely has her own talent and her voice and talent shines through this song. The lyrics are so cool, too. Great song. A must buy for any Pop music-loving fan!
