5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-05-09

The best "Sacred Harp" or "Shape Note" type singing that I've heard. The various renditons are clear and harmonious.
None of that tuning up, barking, la-la's or other cacophonous sounds here.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2003-09-22

I couldn't recommend a CD more highly. As a musician I was amazed at the variety of the music here and the truly exceptional performances. It's seems we can always rely on Albany to put out the most interesting and highest quality recordings.

Seems like only yesterday the Kronos Quartet stepped up their career as musical mavericks with a coveted, wide-open contract with Nonesuch Records. Now it's Nonesuch's turn to give Kronos the big-package nod, gathering key works recorded by the group--from younger composers and time-tested veterans alike--into this 10-CD box set. As one might expect, the set is stuffed with contrasts, from the first CD, with its 11-part, upstepping John Adams suite and then the far more solemn Missa Syllabica from Arvo Pärt. Nearly 20 of these pieces here were composed expressly for Kronos, pitched and sculpted for their easily-racked mixture of straightforward string quartet roles and intelligently restructured approaches to the even the simplest gestures. Perhaps most key here is George Crumb's Black Angels, in large part due to Crumb's role in inspiring David Harrington to form Kronos 25 years ago. Crumb's music spirals and chases through the air, engaging high pitches and fast pacings as if they were ends in themselves. Gone from this set are most of the short snippets that have filled some of Kronos's other fine single CD recordings. In abundance instead are some of the legendary works: Morton Feldman's long, endlessly patient Piano and String Quartet (with Aki Takahashi), Steve Reich's unnerving Different Trains, and Henryk Górecki's String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2. There are also some of the astounding Eastern European works from Night Prayers as well, including the stunning Quartet No. 4 from Sofia Gubaidulina. And of course there are the Kronos biggie pieces: Philip Glass's works fill one CD, and so do Terry Riley's. What's more, Riley's Cadenza on the Night Plain and "G Song" are presented here in entirely fresh, new recordings. What the listener gets is a huge block of music, full of shifting colors and textures but perfectly apt in giving a wide-angle vantage on what Kronos has done for contemporary music. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A worthwhile investment.......2003-10-06

It would be an understatement to say that this is a fabulous box set. All 10 CDs are packed with some fabulous music that beautifull highlights the first 25 years of the Kronos Quartet, and the booklet included provides a great history of the group as well as nice blurbs on the composers and their pieces.

Equally nice about the box set is the inclusion of multiple new recordings, thus making this a worthwhile investment for fans. The Peter Sculthorpe Quartets are a particularly nice addition, as are the added Piazzolla, Part, and Riley compositions.

Along with this, the "classic" Kronos recordings are all here: "Black Angels" "Different Trains" "Salome Dances for Peace" (well, exceprts), and Feldman's Piano and String Quartet. Of particular note, I think is the inclusion of Gubaidulina's Quartet No 4, a fabulous recording that is otherwise hidden in Kronos' recording "Night Prayers."

Yes, this is quite an investment, but I firmly believe that it's worth it - longtime fans and newcomers alike have a lot to gain from this collection.

4 out of 5 stars Excelent compilation!.......2001-09-09

I like more classic period, like Hayden, but Cronos does it very well, technicaly excelent. The ten sets are wonderful recordings and the selection is unique. It deserves the investment, If you buy it, youre going to have more than ten hours of joy.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly Now Retrospective.......2001-06-26

Since their youthful start in the NW back in the 70's, Kronos has collaborated with, commissioned, or just played such a breadth of musicians it almost seems that breadth - and especially non western world culture - is their mission. But, while this conservatively and esthetically designed 25-yr-retrospective box (with its increasingly sophisticated photo-portraits) belies the pulsation of social angst and conscience that underlies the bulk of the inclusions, the latter concern, its vitality and relevance - and not some stylish chasing after cultural breadth - is what overtakes the listener/reader, rather soon. I say reader, since the booklet is very helpful, especially to the relative novice, and well balanced in its coverage of composers, historical contexts, performers, individual texts, etc.

There are probably more non contemporaries performed by the Quartet over the years than this selection would indicate. That undercuts their ties with the sense of revolution in music throughout the ages, but it leaves more time for the present: and that is where one expects the group wishes to be, is most contributory and challenged, and is best and most fairly judged. Highly recommended, both for those who know Kronos's work well and wish a handsome tribute on their shelf, and for those who do not but are open and ready to be affected, whether impacted esthetically, reminded socio-morally, or whatever combination of both befits.

5 out of 5 stars How Could You Not Listen?.......1998-12-19

My opinion pales when compared to this CD. Indeed the group's ingeniousness, its knowing and its balls are in full display here, hopefully to put to rest any lingering contention that there is little more to Kronos than form. To any person who accepts the merits of 20th-century music, this CD presents the genius of our culture and teaches that daring and ingenuity do not have to be sacrificed on the road to technical brilliance. My only regret is that the CD does not include Kronos's interpretation of Bartok. But, so what? Górecki's here, as are Part and Benshoof. Listen to this CD -- soar and struggle with it.

5 out of 5 stars Good for help to know up-to-date contemporaly music.......1998-11-28

The Kronos Quartet has released many albums. There let us see what the quartet has tried new titles and arrenges in each period. But this is the best set for understand the quartet as summary of thier works. The CDs are distributed by each composers and we can see thier identities easily.Unfortunately this dose not include all but be enough to see what the quartet has been.I hope that every classical music fans(not only contemporaly music fans) listen this CDs.

4 out of 5 stars Album #2 in The Maestros 'comeback'.......2004-05-24

Barry White had made a welcome return to the scene in 1987 with `The Right Night & Barry White', an impressive collection of mainly cooled love songs. 1989s `The Man Is Back' sees Barry changing up his game again, this time with an album of two halves. Side one is more up tempo, fun stuff, whereas side two is a selection of chilled, jazzy love songs. It works well and this is a nice varied set for only the 2nd album in his comeback.

The first two cuts are okay, fast-paced numbers, take em or leave em. `LA My Kinda Place' is The Jam, and cuts like `I Wanna Do It Good To Ya' and `Follow That & See' flow with real catchy melodies. `When Will I See You Again' rides a slick, hypnotic groove and vocal, and the last few cuts are jazz influenced ballads. `Don't Let Go' and `Goodnight My Love' are beautifully sung slow burners that build up to dramatic finishes over pianos & strings.

You have to love Barry, the man covers all bases with positive messages and love themes, again you can not only hear, but FEEL his experience of love & life when he kicks game and a lot of his lyrics are very deep. Overall this is a cool album, a nice advancement on his previous effort.

4 out of 5 stars See Where Barry Leads Yýall.......2000-09-02

Barry White is the man and I think it seems just to simple to express that in many of his hits sets, but its really proven on this 1989 set of duds that didn't chart high. I find it kind of shocking that these steamy soul numbers with an eighties twist didn't set the world on fire. It's a nice blend of that deep chanting with a sexy mix of strings and well timed keyboards. It works very well.

Indeed many of the songs are smooth crooning. Mostly toward the later end with yearning of "When Will I See You Again" to piano tinged epics like "Don't Let Go". Wonder what Barry wants you to do with over 9 minutes of a song like that? I guess to Barry fans from the old school that is not a shock. The man is an entertainer and makes real big good records. ON the first half of "The Man is Back", however, its not slow jams but rather upbeat R&B that almost comes off as Europe dance. "L.A. My Kind Of Place" is sexy uptempo sounds from strings to percussion. "Super Lover" is almost too funky for its own good and sounds like a spoof of dance music. The best of this side and the reason I bought the album is the club pop yet smart lyrics of "Follow That And See (Where It Leads Y'All)". I think its great that the bass voiced lover uses some great wisdom on this track to get the kids to think, and dance. The song is a very quirky pleasant dance jam from the King of smooth soft ones.

Barry's first side of dance to till you drop is kind of strange but enjoyable. I think fans of his disco side might dig it. Personally, I do love that song "Follow..." and think its smart dance music. I kind of see why it wasn't a hit. Just doesn't fit for Barry to jam like that, but it has a very eighties dance groove. Those smoothies of jazzy delight will make you want to get with your loved one. He's done it again, but no "opps" here. Let this album take you on a ride. This is a forgotten great by the master Mr. White.

4 out of 5 stars GOOD DISC.......2000-02-13

what can you say about the genius of Barry White? he is very talented&Underrated to me.those strings&the way he arranges music is something special.his voice is still solid.follow that&you will see is a good message song.this is a good disc.

5 out of 5 stars Good coloratura work by Elizabeth Futral.......2007-05-27

This is an interesting CD from soprano Elizabeth Futral. The theme of this is a set of operatic arias sung in English, not in the original French or Italian or. . . . I'm not sure how sold I am on the concept, but, after all, it's the singing and musicality that is most important. And, by that measure, Elizabeth Futral does very nicely.

The accompanying booklet begins by noting that (page 8) "The voice of the light soprano has enchanted listeners for centuries." Futral's singing is characteristic of this type of voice.

In this era, any coloratura soprano has two challenges: first, to compare with the past generation's astonishingly talented practitioners, well exemplified by Joan Sutherland and Beverly Sill. Second, though, there are some wonderful coloratura sopranos today against whom others will be compared, with Natalie Dessay and Sumi Jo among the most adept. Thus, Futral will almost automatically be compared with such exemplars. I do not think one could say she is the equal of those four just mentioned, but she does not compare badly either.

From the Wikipedia: "In musical notation, the Italian word staccato (literally detached, plural staccatos or staccati) indicates that notes are sounded in a detached and distinctly separate manner, with silence making up the latter part of the time allocated to each note. The rhythm is not affected. Notes identified as staccato should be played or sung abruptly and short." This is worthy of comment, since the "Bell Song" from "Lakme," one of the selections on this CD, features many such notes. Futral sings them well. Her performance in this work is well done (although it is somewhat jarring, again, to hear it sung in English). She begins with a nice high note and a bang up following trill. She displays good agility and features nice technique on staccato notes. Overall, this is well done. Toward the end, which calls for great ornamentation, she seems a bit hesitant at time, but she concludes with a nicely sung high note.

Other examples of her singing. From Handel's "Alcina," she sings "Come take me in your arms." Her voice is a light, standard coloratura voice (although not all coloratura sopranos have such a voice, of course). She displays considerable agility, a decent trill, and good ornamentation. There is a bit of harshness on a high note toward the close, but hardly fatal to the overall positive effect of her singing.

From Donizetti's "Linda di Chamounix," there is "My soul is filled with love for you" (otherwise known as "O luce di quest'anima"). Her version is not too shabby when compared with such greats as Sutherland and Jo. The cabaletta shows off, again, her agile voice. Good staccato high notes. Nice trills and a well nailed final high note.

Then there is the charming "Son vergin vezzosa" from Bellini's "I Puritani," here entitled "A maiden adorning." Again, nice agility, good trills, well done florid singing technique. While there is some harshness in the penultimate high note, overall, well done.

In short, Futral adds to a currently rich supply of coloratura sopranos, and compares well with the best of them.

5 out of 5 stars At Last a Solo Recital on CD.......2005-03-19

Elizabeth Futral is one of those rare sopranos who seems to put pacing of her career, care of the voice, and commitment to repertoire range ahead of the too early media blitz that can hamper a singer's career. Clearly she has it all - beauty of voice, beauty of physical presence, fine acting skills, intelligence, and interpretive insights.

Having seen her Cleopatra in LA Opera's GUILIO CESARE and in SF Opera's production of Previn's STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE put her high on the list of important new sopranos. This rather strange recording gives samples of her foray's into all styles from Handel to Previn and does a fine job in capturing the beauty of her phrasing and quality of her seamless soprano voice. It is somewhat distracting to place a first recital recording before the public being sung entirely in English, especially for those who are unfamiliar with Futral's gifts. But credit Chandos with the courage to try something different, something that may introduce new audiences to the opera field.

Surely after the recent successes of Futral performances in the opera houses more recordings will follow. Meanwhile this is a tasty sampler of just how versatile - and special - Elizabeth Futral is. Grady Harp, March 05

4 out of 5 stars An Interesting display.......2003-07-23

Coloratura-soprano Elizabeth Futral is a remarkable artist with a beautiful instrument and a most impressive technique. Her appearences in record stores are mostly on lesser known and up and coming labels such as Opera Rara and CHANDOS; with a few performances on DG.

This CD has an unusual semi-personal package. Duets, trios and quartets are featured. The title of the program is called Great Operatic Arias which seems rather broad for a soprano recital disc.

Futral sings well as always, however the content seems to lack a bit of intricacy and polish. Each aria, duet etc leaves you wondering whether or not a bit more time could have been put into this. The arias range from baroque to 20th century; covering four languages.

The entire program is performed in English and this is interesting... Although some of the arias just sound plain strange in English! It is a very nice thing to actually completely and instantly understand what is being sung. I was most impressed with the CHANDOS Lucia di Lammermoor. Futral probably gave her best performance on record in that role. She is astonishingly good on that recording. Her mad scene is awesome!

Overall this is a pleasing recording and Futral dazzles her listeners with her crystal clear high notes and vibrant tone. I look forward to more recordings of her. Hopefully she'll have a chance to record some more opera in its original language. I think that its time for a new Puritani or Sonnambula. Wouldn't she be the perfect candidate?

1 out of 5 stars Skip this CD.......2007-02-13

This CD seems to have gone out of its way to trnsfer the worst VHS tapes to CD Audio and package it as classic film scores. The short excerpts are very bad and fade out just as the tempo begins to build. If you love film noir, skip this CD. If you are interested in film noir, skip this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great soundtracks "from the original films!".......2006-08-06

I feel compelled to respond to some of the negative criticism below. This is not a collection of restored and re-recorded scores by a modern orchestra. These are the original soundtracks from the films themselves. Given that they are in mono and suffer from age, they cannot possibly be judged by the same criteria as a modern recording. BUT, as a collection of noir soundtracks, they are superb. It's a huge list of title tracks from great films noir. And, as many of these are unavailable as restored and re-recorded scores, it is a wonderful disc to have in your collection. If the only scores you like are high-fidelity, however, then this is definitely not for you. But this disc also can't be judged by those sonic standards. For those of you who desire to listen to some of this more obscure film music--just as it would sound playing the video on your TV--then this is a great disc to have.

4 out of 5 stars Good for fans.......2006-01-18

Given that there are very few Film Noir compilation soundtrack cd's available, I'd say this one works just fine for what it is. It's certainly not the most polished work, but it does have a lot of film scores and no fan should be without it. I'm glad I bought it.

I am waiting this CD in my home. At today it's missing. Take note of this, please.

5 out of 5 stars Not For Audiophiles, But Wonderful for the Rest of Us!.......2006-01-13

I thought that this disc was quite possibly the best attempt so far at cataloging some of the best themes of the film-noir genre. It leaves out the dialogue snippets that break up the feel and mood of the music, and some of the selections are, quite simply, marvelous. Also, the compilers here were brave enough to include some of the rarer and seldom-mentioned noirs for inclusion here. If you're an audiophile, you must realize that these recordings are SIXTY YEARS OLD, for goodness sakes. I'll never understand why some people put so much stake in stereo sound and crystal clear remastering. I happen to feel that the gritty mono (which really isn't nearly as bad as has been suggested) heightens the hardbitten feel of these works. So, if you're someone who enjoys authentic film music, give this a shot! If you're expecting something butchered, repackaged, and changed around for modern tastes, don't bother with this collection!

White's trademark strings and horns are present on this 1978 release, but play second fiddle (as it were) to irresistibly syncopated disco beats on most of the seven tracks. The club hit "Your Sweetness Is My Weakness" sounds in retrospect like a template for Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," while "Look at Her" and the Caribbean-flavored "Sha La La Means I Love You" further demonstrate White's talent for inventive, ear-catching arrangements. His first commercial peak had passed by the time The Man appeared, but the two slower closing cuts, "Early Years" and a cover of "Just the Way You Are," speak to the patience and openheartedness behind White's usual sexiness. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars he was the man .......2007-05-27

I remember this album from the 8th grade in Richmond,Va our teachewr would play this while we were taking a test or reading .(it would seem odd I guess these days to have a DJ/Teacher leading the classroom but she was cool and groovy and everyone learned much from her class)I recall that the original album came in a sort of folding case, that opened like an office folder. The music was superb and I especially recall the Billy Joel remake of "just the way you are" which was a total hit for many of the young black and white students from this inner city middle school(Elkhardt) in Richmond,Va circa 1978.

5 out of 5 stars Classic!!.......2006-02-25

Barry White's voice is classic and you can never mistake that deep baritone voice. "Just The Way You Are" is the bomb!!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Barry White.......2005-08-02

Barry White's album, "The Man" really exhibits that he was definitely the man of his time!

5 out of 5 stars Barrys final GREAT record.......2004-01-19

By 1978 Barry White had enjoyed some musical journey. He had consistently crafted hit singles and classic albums (7 in a row) whilst also enjoying success producing albums for other artists. With 'The Man', his 8th album, The Maestro STILL has a zest for creativity. Whilst its hard to pick out favorites from such a strong body of work, this album has to be up there.

On his previous album 'Barry White Sings For Someone You Love' The Maestro had added new musical elements to his already strong artillery. The trend continues here as he crafts inventive melodies built around juicy, full blooded orchestration, memorable riffs and themes of romance and grooving. 'Your Sweetness Is My Weakness' is a sizeable chunk of bombastic FONK, and precedes the ridiculously fun and catchy 'Sha La La Means I Love You'. 'Its Only Love Doing Its Thang' rides a gangster riff sampled by 50 Cent, whilst slower numbers such as 'Just The Way You Are' and 'Early Years' are warm and sweet, overflowing with soul.

This albums caps off an incredible body of work The Maestro built in the 70s. After this album he finally escaped his record deal and formed his own label. 'The Message Is Love' and 'Sheet Music' had their moments however the spark of innovation and genius seemed to have been doused. People moved to other artists and Barry faded out of view. Still, ALL of his previous work is Essential Listening and i doubt we'll ever see another Barry White. R.I.P.

5 out of 5 stars This Is GREAT!.......2003-07-31

These are some of the very best songs in Barry White's career. The overwhelmingly strings, mixed with disco beats, makes this CD all the more beautiful. My favorites are "September When I First Met You," a gorgeous song, with awesome horns and strings throughout, "Look At Her," a cool disco-flavored love song, and "Just the Way You Are" (his version throws Billy Joel's in the shade!) I never cared for that song very much, until I heard his version. Now, I love it... An excellent CD!
