At the height of their 2004 "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)" fame, Big & Rich's one lament was that radio didn't know what to do with them, even though they sold two million copies of their debut album, Horse of a Different Color. Their follow-up, 2005's Comin' to Your City, likewise failed to score a Top 10 single, but still went platinum. Now comes their third album, and their first single, "Lost in This Moment"--an overtly emotional ballad about getting hitched--is selling like Gatorade at a chili cook-off. Are Music City's most likeable lunatics playing it safe? Well, it sounds that way. And if that's a disappointment, given their initial rollicking (and much needed) assault on staid Nashville, there's more bad news. Big Kenny's loopy songs of peace, love, and hippified unity (especially the overblown "Eternity," featuring John Legend) now sound so familiar, replete with Pentecostal blathering ("Brothers and sisters..."), you can sing along the first time you hear them. The duo sequences the album like a vinyl disc of old, with a virtual A-side (ballads) and B-side (rockers). Not surprising, the B-side wins, even if "Radio" owes too much to the self-aggrandizing hullabaloo of Comin' to Your City and Wyclef Jean drops by to rap a few country clichés. It takes an awfully long time for this album to be fun, but it eventually does, with an AC/DC cover ("You Shook Me All Night Long") and a Brooks & Dunnish turbo-tonker ("Loud"). Fans of Big & Rich already understand that they take their spirituality as seriously as their sinning. But next time, here's hoping they spend more time in Saturday night, and less in Sunday morning. --Alanna Nash

Not as much "fun" .......2007-08-03

The first 2 albums had a lot of "fun" songs on them. This one is a little slower, and focuses on more spiritual themes. But it is still a good album.

Big and Rich are still the greatest!.......2007-07-30

It doesn't take a genius to see that these guys are great! You can't listen to any of their albums without wanting to sing along. All their albums are filled with chart toppers (in my heart). And if it takes topping charts to get your attention, well they just happen to have the #1 song in the US. That's right guys, now the whole country knows that these guys have more than what it takes, and will keep on COMIN'! These guys will be around for years to come and girls (ok, so 31 isn't a girl) like me will love every minute of it! Keep it comin' guys, your the greatest!

This has got to be one of the BEST CD's I have ever heard. I love every song on here, ok, well...I have to say the remake of the ZZTOPP song is not a fave of mine, but the rest of the CD is definatly out of this world. This CD has not left my player since I got it and it is not leaving anytime soon!

This cd was Ok but not as good as Big & Riches previous 2 cd's. The hard driving country they are known for was minimal on this record and that really disappointed me. I am used to loving every sone on their cd' san dI only liked about 3 on this cd. They can do much better.

Run-DMC's 1986 rap masterpiece, Raising Hell, storms out of the musical gate. One of the albums that defined the transition from the old school to the new school, with its heavy rhyme sequences layered on top of drum-machine beats, and an assortment of pulse-quickening record stabs thrown in for good measure, it's relentless. The late-'80s lyricism of MCs Run and DMC is not as complex as that of today's microphone mathematicians, but that was never the point--what they lack in finesse, they more than make up in intensity, authority, and flat-out lung power. The fact that almost every line of "Peter Piper" has become the hook of another hip-hop song is a testament to the power of these originals (the "not bad meaning bad, but bad meaning good" line alone has been used in countless turntablist routines). Run DMC's Finest Hour....(get this as your first Run DMC Album).......2007-01-29

Arguably one of the most important Rap acts to ever grace a Mic, Run DMC where largely credited with taking rap music, which at that point, was largely considered the domain of the streets and small clubs, and managing to cross over to the mainstream. This, their third (and unarguably most important) album, was the moment when the trio, found themselves at the forefront of the MTV generation. And although 2002's "Greatest Hits" album cherry picks the biggest moments in their career (i.e. The most popular Singles) this album is probably a better overview of the immortal Run Dmc's output. If any of their albums could be stood up as their greatest achievement with the late `Jam Master Jay', and Cement, Run Dmc's Place, in rap history as Hip-Hop's ambassadors....then this is it!! With the tongue twisting raps of "Peter Pier", with it's energetic bravado and uncompromising swagger, this was a exactly the sort of track that endeared them to both underground rap fans, and the chart buying public. As the first track on this album beautifully leading straight into the superlative "It's Tricky", with it's stuttering bass/beats and playful rhymes, not to mention a superbly playful video to accompany the single release. Run Dmc began the gradual crossover appeal of Hip-Hop. But to purely mention just Run Dmc in this review would be unfair, not to mention a unsung pivotal figure in their success....the production genius of "Rick Rubin" that toughened their sound, and give the rudimentary production of their first two albums, a more polished and accessible edge. And nowhere is this better exemplified then, when the phenomenal Aerosmith/Run Dmc pairing "Walk This Way" rolls into view, it skilfully mixed rock dynamics, with the cool loops and beats of Hip-Hop, and although it's now been played to the point of over-familiarity, there can be no arguments as to how influential it was, in taking Hip-Hop/Rap from the underground and to a much wider audience. As a group, Run Dmc where always smart then the average rap act, firstly by affiliating themselves with the `Adidas' shoe company (Hence the "My Adidas" track). Their sound has always been one of Confident street smart and the Brash ("Dumb Girl"), and more importantly by being louder and more invigorating then their rivals, but in such a way as to not scare of potential new listeners. Compared to the sort of lyrical delivery of more contemporary acts (Nas, Jay-Z, Gza), or the leap and strides made in Production (Madlib, Kayne West, Dj Premier), this album can sound a little dated on occasion. but this album was (and still is) Run Dmc's Crowning Glory and Paved the way, for future acts, and it's importance in Hip-Hop simply cannot be underestimated.

One of the first hiphop classics.............2006-09-22

1986 - Raising Hell. What! Too many joints to name. The whole thing is part of this hiphop thing blueprint. Run, D, and Jay were superstars and the undisputed Kings of Rap. Walk this way was they entry to mainstream, but in the hood we were blasting My Adidas, It's Tricky, Hit it Run and You be Illin. Classic Groundbreaking Material. Nuff Said!

A milestone in the music-industry.......2006-04-14

In the middle of the 80's, when we went from old school to new school, Run-DMC and Jam Master Jay were the kings of the hill. Breakbeats got exchanged with drum machines, and the trio put the skills in focus. "Two turntables and a mic" as we say it.
That was all you needed, and the interaction between MC Run and Darryl Mack really shock people. Now it wasn't just important what you said, but how you said it.

Even though Run-DMC and King Of Rock also did well, with respectively gold- and platinum selling, it was Raising Hell that was the real breakthrough for the Queens-trio. The record sold more than three million copies, and seriously put hip-hop on the map. Run-DMC were known for being the first to merge rap and rock ("Rock Box" from 1984) and their collaboration with Aerosmith, "Walk This Way", which became a huge crossover hit. Others songs, for example the DJ-favorite "Peter Piper", "It's Tricky", "My Adidas" and "You Be Illin'", are all looked upon as classics today.

In my opinion Raising Hell are their finest moment. The debutalbum, Run-DMC are also classic material, but Raising Hell was more universality and entertaining. They were grown up, and talked about more than just sucker mc's. I remember this record was in heavy rotation home in my room, and I also remembering I tried to learn the lyrics by memory.

One of my personal favorites was actually the acapella track "Son Of Byford". If you wanna learn more about the roots of hip-hop, this is the essential buy. These three are real pioneers, and Raising Hell are nothing less than a milestone in the music industry. Recognize!

I big THANK YOU should go out to RUN-DMC for putting hip-hop on the map. I understand that there were others in the industry that came before RUN-DMC (ex. SugarHill Gang) yet: I believe that Run-Dmc wanted to try to reach thier music to a much broader audience, and doing a cover of Walk this Way was a brillent way to reach fans of rock music. Not only did they cover this, they had Aerosmith play along with them. In todays music, this is all so common. Most aren't suprised with Duets and Guest appearences on albums, such as Country going with Hip-Hop or Metal going with Classical. But for 1986, this was a big deal. I only know of one odder pairing and that would be Bing Crosby and David Bowie for their Duet on "The little Drummer Boy" Funny thing about RUN-DMC was that not only did fans love "Walk this Way" but realized that the rest of the album kicked some a** 2! This was the birth of Hip-Hop from out of the streets and into the suburbs. Over the next few years we would see the industry take storm, as hip-hop began gettting airplay, and its own radio stations, not just some late night shows on college radio stations. Then ganster rap evolved (thank NWA) and the rest is history. WE must thank Run-DMC for this, for who knows where hip-hop would be without them..ENJOY

The One and Only.......2006-01-25

"Raising Hell" was the really the landmark album for Run-DMC because it took the best parts of their first two, "Run-DMC" and "King of Rock", and put them together for an ultimate classic. By putting the hard guitar lines on some of the songs and keeping Jay's scratch with D and Run's chemistry, they really put two and two together.Their first two are still the only of their kind, but "Raising Hell" really took it to the next level for them. This album launched them to superstardom and opened up a whole new audience for the Hollis crew. "Raising Hell" will always be remembered as one of the greatest hip hop albums ever, no matter how many years from now.

"Peter Piper" was one of Run-DMC's greatest tracks ever because it had clever, slick wordplay with Run and DMC trading nursery rhymes and Jam Master Jay made one of the best rap beats up to 1986. "It's Tricky" is another one of their best known songs, it had a hard guitar line and a good chant for a chorus, the verses are all funny. "My Adidas", of course, is a straight classic old school rap jam, it defined an era of clothing and has a super drum kit beat. Like in most of them on this album, Run and D show their great chemistry that allows them to play off each other and even finish each other's sentences. "Walk This Way" was the song that opened the most doors for them, but besides its influence, it's cool because it took an old rock song and made it into a hip hop landmark. "Hit It Run" is a really good beat, Jay's scratch sounds awesome, and every rhyme is right on point. "You Be Illin'" is one of my favorite songs, the sax line is real catchy and the lyrics are funny, talking of one drugged up guy and his problems. "Proud to Be Black" finished off the album strong, the first song of its kind, political minded as the two MCs let some weight off their chest and show their pride. This Deluxe version is a good buy because it includes some a cappella mixes, demos, and live tracks.

Like any of their albums, "Raising Hell" is invaluable in its influence on hip hop and the music industry at large. But more than that, it is a great album to listen to. I struggle to think of all the times I've heard tracks from here sampled, I've probably heard every beat used at least once. It's a classic in every sense of the word, so add it right up to your collection if it's not already.

You have to give them credit but still you can't judge them on that. Their ryhmes can't compare to the master 2pac or 50 cent. I think everyone who floats it with hip hop knows that these kids blew it by getting involved with Aerosmith. Rock n Roll and drugs were never meant to mix with rap. This music needed to be about bling, [...] and guns while rock needed to be about drugs, cars and [...]. Praise them if you want but tell me you would'nt rather listen to Public Enemy or Starsailor.

First off, all the DJ's need to get like 8 copies of this record because beat juggling this & the singles are always fresh. I myself, have an ill routine/juggle with Peter Piper (such a great song) Look...you won't have to skip any of the tracks because the LP is perfect.

I'm a huge old school rap fan and this is the blueprint on how it's supposed to be done. I was in 8th grade when this came out and it just added to my already legendary flow. I would recite "Son of Byford" while walking down the hall with a smoking hot philly on each arm. I was wearing generra shirts, polo shirts, coca-cola shirts and Diet Pepsi jeans. My hair was parted perfectly on the right side to the point that women just wanted to touch it. This CD is flawless all the way through and inspired me to start the hottest new rap group in Millard at the time. Run B.R.A.(Burns, Rich, Abs) was just off the hook and hit home with the under 15 set. We had hit after hit with songs like, "I can't wait until I'm 16", "Hooking up at the roller rink" and "Grab my butt you crazy woman!!". These standards were requested time after time at birthday parties. We would play retirement homes, Copier repair shops and the Sapp Brothers Ballroom. It was always standing room only and many fights broke out over which one of us was the hottest. We were all extremely smooth, but when I laid the smooth as yogurt voice out there, the ladies were throwing undergarments at me. By saying that, I'm not implying that Burns and Jabs were not smooth as well, they hooked up after every show too and are still smoother than you, the reader, could ever dream of being. To sum this up, your chances of being like us are minimal, but you can buy this CD to make yourself feel a little like us.

Thier finest album .........2005-02-20

By their third album, Run-D.M.C. were primed for a breakthrough into the mainstream, but nobody was prepared for a blockbuster on the level of Raising Hell. Run-D.M.C. and King of Rock had established the crew's fusion of hip-hop and hard rock, but that sound didn't blossom until Raising Hell, partially due to the presence of Rick Rubin as producer. Rubin loved metal and rap in equal measures and he knew how to play to the strengths of both, while slipping in commercial concessions that seemed sly even when they borrowed from songs as familiar as "My Sharona" (heard on "It's Tricky"). Along with longtime Run-D.M.C. producer Russell Simmons, Rubin blew down the doors of what hip-hop could do with Raising Hell because it reached beyond rap-rock and found all sorts of sounds outside of it. Sonically, there is simply more going on in this album than any previous rap record, more hooks, more drum loops, more scratching, more riffs, more of everything. Where other rap records, including Run-D.M.C.'s, were all about the rhythm, this is layered with sounds and ideas, giving the music a tangible flow. But the brilliance of this record is that even with this increased musical depth, it still rocks as hard as hell, and in a manner that brought in a new audience. Of course, the cover of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way," complete with that band's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, helped matters considerably, since it gave an audience unfamiliar with rap an entry point, but if it was just a novelty record, a one-shot fusion of rap and rock, Raising Hell would never have sold three million copies. No, the music was fully realized and thoroughly invigorating, rocking harder and better than any of its rock or rap peers in 1986, and years later,

DO THE SPANISH HUSTLE.......2003-04-28

This is the re-release of the ORIGINAL ALBUM from 1975 (originally on Event/Polydor Records). Spanish Hustle clocks in at 5:16, However, there was a promo only 12" release clocking in at 6:24. This version should of been on the cd as a bonus.. "Do the Bus Stop (are You ready)" was the other hit.

The best album from Fatback Band.......2002-02-20

This album is a jazz album with roots of rithm & blues. The music of Fatback Band is wonderful kind of jazz I've never heard.
In two songs (All Day and Spanish Hustle)there's a very good trumpet solo. This trumpet solo seems performed by Herb Alpert.

Let's not mince words: Raising Hell is one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. It's not just because it equally pissed off and lightened up leagues of metalheads (the unforgettable crossover Aerosmith cover, "Walk This Way"). It's not because "Peter Piper" is the king of primary school raps which were a weird late-'80s sensation (check out Schoolly D's "B-Boy Rhyme and Riddle" and LL Cool J's "Ain't My Rhyme Ain't Done" for further research into the phenomenon). And it's not even because this is the rap album from which all samples flow, cannibalized by nearly every other rap album since its release. Raising Hell is great because it is a complete character study of Run D.M.C.: "My Adidas" is what they wore; "Son of Byrod" and "Hit It Run" is who they were; and "It's Tricky" is their 'don't try this at home' admonition to the kids at home. There are about 12 albums in rap's history that are mandatory purchases for followers--this is at least one of them. --Todd Levin

I think that "Raising Hell" by RUN DMC should be a part of everybody's musical library, especially if you are into hip hop. They were the pioneers of mainstream hip hop because they took rap music to that next level where it would be appreciated by all walks of life. From the streets of Harlem and Brooklyn to Long Beach, without Run-DMC, rap music probably would have taken a much harder road to where it is today. This album started it all for me and for millions of other fans! Keep it real!!

The Greatest Hip-Hop Album of all time (or at least top 3).......1999-06-02

Simply stated, Raising Hell is one of the greatest albums of all time. People who are new to hip-hop, just don't know what true hip-hop is until the have heard this and other classics. Current artists could use this as a lesson on originality. Please get more copies---I want one!

This album really set it off in a major way back in the era of 1986-87. Everybody who's currently a fan of Bad Boy and No Limit needs to check out this album for some true school originality. Now that Dee, Run, and Jay have been signed by Arista Records, they have a new album due out this year- Their back catalog was also picked up by Arista- and it's bound to be re-released!!!
