Based on Nicholas Sparks' novel, director Nick Cassavetes film spins the bittersweet tale of a 60-year romance, as seen from the polar perspectives of its promising youth and the travails of an old age cursed by Alzheimer's. Its soundtrack effectively echoes those polar dramatic concerns, with composer Aaron Zigler's gentle orchestral score largely giving voice to the character's melancholy present, while a rich, well-chosen slate of vintage material by Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller imparts a restless energy to their youth. There's a certain schmaltz to much of Zigman's work here, yet cues like "House Blues/The Porch Dance.." and "Noah's Journey" argue he's achieved something more elusive than mere melodramatic wallpaper with the deceivingly difficult task at hand; it can't be easy to have your work seasoned with the likes of Ellington's sassy "Alabamy Home" and Goodman's still-vibrant "One O'Clock Jump." Sharply contrasting versions of "I'll Be Seeing You" by Holiday and Jimmy Durante bookend the soundtrack, perfectly evoking the story's alternating shades of hope and fading nostalgia and framing Zigman's understated work in the bargain. --Jerry McCulley
Album Description
Based on the best selling novel by Nicholas Sparks ("A Walk To Remember", "Message In A Bottle"), "The Notebook" is the story of Noah and Allie, teenage lovers torn apart by WWII and Allie's parents' demands to marry a respectable lawyer. After 14 years apart, they meet again and rekindle their true love. Starring Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, James Garner, and Gena Rowlands. The soundtrack is a propelling force. In addition to classic WWII era pieces, Aaron Zigman's score suites enhance the record with beautifully dramatic themes. Score performed by the Hollywood Studio Symphony.

Touching.......2007-07-04
There isn't much I can say about this beautiful movie, except that it was so touching!
It say's go for the "true love", settle for nothing else no matter what may be in store, because love that is "true" and as beautiful as their's was, is a rare thing!
I absolutely loved the ending.
I also loved that a movie CAN be truly wonderful, beautiful and touching WITHOUT grafic "sex scenes!" Also sadly a rare thing in movies today.
Ever seen "Hanover Street?" Equally beautiful. No SEX scenes either!

Pays music a complement. I love the classical pieces!.......2007-05-27
I do not have the soundtrack to The Notebook, but I do have the movie itself. Having said that, every song is wonderful. Some music carries with it, a wealth of emotion and a sense of timelessness. I love all of the classical pieces , perhaps the best, in this particular movie. Classical has never been my speed when it comes down to music, but something about this movie's classical masterpieces struck a chord in me...made me smile and maybe even sniffle a bit. If you are a fan of the movie, I'm sure you would love its soundtrack too. Music like this is ideal for a romantic evening or just for pleasure listening. You don't know if you'll like something until you give it a chance! So give this a chance!!
the Notebook soundtrack (Audio CD).......2007-05-13
This is a beautiful collection of music from the movie, The Notebook. Most is instrumental, very relaxing, as well as lively at times. Two renditions of "I'll Be Seeing You" are included.
Very Nice.......2007-03-30
I really enjoyed listening to the soundtrack, but I'm also a big fan of background music and this cd was great for both. Listening to the cd took me back to the movie and reminded me how much I enjoyed it, but I also put the cd on during a nice meal with friends and it worked out very well, they all enjoyed the music.
A sweeping, emotional standout!.......2007-01-11
The music from The Notebook brings you right back to the film, capturing your heart and soul. It's music will roll live waves through your soul and bring you from nostalgia to your own feelings of love and desire. The selections, arrangements and orchestrations are to be admired, and Mr. Zigman is to be praised. This soundtrack truly completes the legacy of "The Notebook".

Customer Reviews:
One of America's great songwriters.......2001-03-09
Amid the Cole Porters, Irving Berlins and George Gershwins of the world, Harold Arlen tends to be forgotten. And yet, when the greatest song of the 20th century was recently voted on by a distinguished panel of critics, whose song came out on top? Mr. Arlen's (Over the Rainbow). Here is a superb cross section of Harold Arlen songs by a cast ranging from Judy Garland to Bing Crosby to Ethel Waters, spanning decades and spanning a wide range of styles, from jazz to ballads, poignant to funny. Although the sound is not ideal, as many of the recordings date from the 30's and Pearl's objective in remastering has always been to achieve the fullest musical sound rather than to reduce surface noise, this is a minor complaint given the rich and mind-opening selection of great music found here.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent exploration of Arlen.......1999-07-20
Julie Wilson offers another masterclass performance of songs by Harold Arlen with his numerous lyricists. Arlen's name is not as well known as some of his contemporaries, but his talents as a songwriter were magnificent. Julie Wilson and William Roy mine the Arlen songbook to produce an album of sterling quality, delivering delightful duets on such gems as 'Push De Button' and 'Lydia The Tattooed Lady'. Wilson offers brilliant readings of ballads and rhythm songs, capturing the mood and flavour of each song perfectly. Her sensuous take on 'Last Night When We Were Young' is particularly compelling. Roy's piano embellishments are, as ever, full of wit, sensitivity and formidable musicianship. A stunning offering.
fascinating, multi layered performance, never boring.......1999-03-15
no matter how many time you listen to her, you'll hear something new each time. Julie Wilson is the consumate cabaret singer.

Homegrown Hippie.......2007-05-16
I meant to review Traveling Chamber Blues show, which looks similar to this one, so the opinions expressed may not reflect this particular album, but I have a feeling this one sounds pretty much like the other one.
You gotta really love the harmonica to be happy with this CD. I've tried it twice now, but can't get through it. It's not bad, I just can't get through the harmonica and violin to get to the groove. I'd heard a couple of songs from him before buying this that had a quirky, groovy feel to them, that I thought would take me to the acoustic crossover between buzzland and hometown organic. A rare place to go I can tell you, but neccessary once in a while. Anyway, I'm going to keep looking for the right time to try it again so I can hopefully appreciate it. But until I can find it, my advice is to buy it only if you love the sound of a harmonica.
Fun Album!.......2005-08-29
I met Corky Siegel at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa about 10 years ago. He and the Chamber Blues ensemble were both charming and engaging.
This album is at once technical prowess and jazz improvization.
And it makes a wonderful party background!

Corky Siegel Proves Again That There Are No Limits!!!.......2002-12-17
Corky Siegel has proven throughout his long and illustrious career that the humble harmonica is virtually without any limitations. beginning with his work in the 1960's with the Seigel-Schwall Blues band, he showed the world that a white kid could play authentic Blues with as much integrity as any of the old masters. Later he expanded the horizons of the harmonica by working with William Russo to produce "Three pieces for Blues Band and Orchestra" and "Street Dances". On this latest project, Corky Siegel again pushes the envelope of what a harmonica is capable of.
Chamber Blues features a string quartet playing Blues along with a Tabla drummer for extra rhythmic support. Corky's masterful harmonica playing should not surprise anyone who has heard him before. He is simply one of the best to ever play the instrument. This recording still took me completely by storm. Every single cut on the album is a textbook example of what great harmonica playing is all about. Subtle, yet powerful.
if you have any doubts as to whether the harmonica has a place in the future of Classical music, this recording should definitely set you straight.
Excellent, I especially love the last song........1999-09-23
I bought this as a tape a couple years ago. When I went to CD's I couldn't find it, now I have, and I'm estatic. It's entertaining, and once again, I love the last song. Insecurity...
Smooth blend of classical strings and harmonica/blues piano.......1999-04-21
Corky's music is a refreshing blend of classical chamber music (two violins, a viola, and a cello) with his harmonica and/or piano playing. A fresh sound without being over the edge. You've got to pick up this group on tour. Visit their website (chamberblues.com) and catch them when they get near you. It'll be a cozy venu.

Primitive gem of lost Americana.......2007-01-26
Eddie "One String" Jones was discovered in LA's Skid Row carrying a instrument made from a 2x4 plank, a single broom wire, bottles and a paint bucket. The instrument was unmistakably a 'diddley bow,' the fabled one-string instrument played by poor children in the South.
But Eddie wasn't a child...and he wasn't anywhere near the Mississippi Delta. He was an eccentric musician who played his diddley bow with passion and precision. He really believed he was a major musician (read the liner notes to the cd...they're very detailed about the experience) and his playing proved him right.
It's one thing to play slide guitar using frets and position markers to guide your slide hand. It's another to play incredible tunes on a 2x4 with broom wire. Eddie "One String" Jones should be classified as a slide guitar legend because of his pitch and skill. His slide hand (he used a whisky bottle as a slide) hits each note perfectly.
I love this cd and have let many many friends borrow it. If you like slide guitar, blues, O Brother Where Art Thou music or anything labeled "outsider music," then you'll want to get this disc. You'll thank me later.

Rare folk music collectible.......2004-03-24
I first heard this on and LP (remember 33 1/3?) in the late sixties when I bought it just because it looked interesting. I am really pleased to see it available on cd. This is a must have if you are into collecting folk music at all. I was also pleased to see the original liner notes included with the cd, so you can see how this one string instrument is made. Eddie "one string" put his together from the junk pile, and it has a totally unique sound. Kinda makes one want to go the garage and put one together just to try it out. And Edward Hazelton Jones is a great harmonica player with a very haunting sound. Check this out! This is the real deal and you won't regret it.
rural pure blues.......2003-11-13
this recording is a really interesting album,if you are lookin for this kind of sound, this is about as raw as it gets.I love the pure delta sound like son house and robert johnson and this for me was a real diamond in the rough! It's sad that most of these musicians were poor and treated bad even though there music was rich and full of emotion.
Street Music By An Original.......2000-07-04
These recordings are all that exists of street musician Eddie Jones' music. Playing a home made instrument akin to the African diddleybow, Jones' Delta inspired blues sounds primative and authentic. Jones shares this CD with another street musician, Edward Hazelton, who accompanies himself alone on harmonica to interesting effect. If you're wanting something original and authentic, this is about as unique as it gets.

Perhaps I should start by admitting a bias: Many years ago, lying on Boston's grassy Esplanade by the Charles River on warm summer nights, I learned what a symphony orchestra should sound like, with Arthur Fiedler conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra. Those concerts were free; these seven compact discs are not--not quite. But for any lover of light classical music, they are certainly one of the best buys available. The orchestra (essentially the Boston Symphony) is one of the world's greatest; the music, from Smoke Gets in Your Eyes to the Goyescas Intermezzo and Ride of the Valkyries is instantly enjoyable and permanently valuable; the conductor is at the same time genial and exacting, convinced that any music you play, no matter how frivolous, deserves the best you can give it. --Joe McLellan

Definitly one of my favorite classical CD's....has a bit of everything, and it's all extremely well played and recognizable. I never go on car trips without it with me. If you buy only one classic CD (set), THIS IS IT!

Customer Reviews:
An excellent way to get acquainted with Ravel.......2002-10-23
I usually avoid "The Best of ..." albums, but at this ridiculously low price, I figured: "What the heck; nothing to lose," especially in view of my favorable experience with the Naxos label.
I ended up with a real gem. The selection of pieces on the CD is a good representation of the scope and talent of the composer. What's more, the disc includes both of Ravel's show-stoppers--"Tzigane" and "Bolero". And to top it all off, the music is beautifully performed.
At the current bargain price, it's simply impossible to go wrong with this disc.
