One of the more creative, successful tribute albums, A Vision Shared was originally released to coincide with a PBS program that premiered in 1988. Packing some serious heavyweights onto one CD, the record features covers of Guthrie and Leadbelly tunes by, among others, Little Richard, Brian Wilson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Sweet Honey in the Rock, and U2. The 14 tracks consist of mostly well known tunes, and it's fascinating to hear what the artists have done to them. Particularly exciting is a supercharged version of Leadbelly's "Rock Island Line" by Little Richard with Fishbone and U2's take on Guthrie's "Jesus Christ." --Ian Landau
Customer Reviews:
U-2 & LITTLE RICHARD ALONE MAKE THIS A BUY!.......2006-02-01
SNAPPY,TRUE TO WOODY'S STYLE AND GOOD FUN.
Good Compiliation.......2006-01-09
I enjoy all the cuts on this compilation. It is fun to hear the variety of artists perform their works. A rockin' version of Rock Island line from Little Richard that is worth the whole album. Funny how the Bourgeois Blues still seems relevant.........
LITTLE RICHARD WITH FISHBONE STANDS OUT.......2005-08-20
IF YOU LIKE PURE, OLD SCHOOL ROCK 'N' ROLL, PICK UP THIS ALBUM FOR LITTLE RICHARD'S AWESOME RECORDING OF 'ROCK ISLAND LINE'. IN MY OPINION, IT IS THE TRACK THAT STANDS OUT MORE THAN ANY OTHERS. IF YOU DON'T APPRECIATE THAT GENRE, YOU MAY NOT APPRECIATE THAT TRACK AS MUCH. I ZEROED IN ON THE ALBUM MAINLY FOR LITTLE RICHARD'S TRACK, ALTHOUGH THE REST ARE FINE.
tried and true.......2004-10-10
I must have bought this on cassette back in the late eighties out of a bargain bin, a bargain bin! It would hve been a bargain at full price. I played the cassette to death and now I've bought the CD.
Almost every song has life to it, not one a simple re-singing. Sweet Honey in the Rock's "Sylvie" still gives me pause after all these years. Lovely. The U2, the Emmylou Harris and the Springsteen also rank high and I'm not a rabid fan of any of those people.
The album is a wonderful pairing of musicians with timeless work of two masters. I have MANY CD's but I only keep a handful next to the player at all times and this is one of them.
Brian Wilson's version of Goonight Irene is amazing!.......2004-07-21
Brian Wilson really made that song his own. It sounds like a song he wrote it, and stands out from others on this album. It shows what a fine arranger he is. The primitive drums and synthesizers on that track reminds me of The Beach Boys Love You album.

Album Description
Enter the Worship Circle: First Circle is a unique praise and worship album. While most such recordings contain covers of the worship standards, this album features all original songs written by 100 Portraits and Waterdeep . What's more, the songs were recorded live and unplugged, and the instrumentation is composed solely of the jangle of acoustic guitars and the rhythms of hand drums. The result is a worship album for those dismayed or uninterested in the grandiose production and operatic vocals of typical praise and worship albums. Enter the Worship Circle :First Circle has a sound that is open and free-form, beautiful as a well-laid plan, but spontaneous as a sincere declaration of love.
Customer Reviews:
I Will Not Forget This CD!.......2006-06-06
This CD always makes it back into my CD player rotation. It is one of my favorite worship CDs for these reasons: it is raw but passionate and it is extremely catchy. Being a praise band, I have loved doing covers of I Will Not Forget You, You Are So Good to Me, You Have Redeemed My Soul, Tender Mercy, and I Could Run Away. These are some of the best praise songs of all time! This CD was recorded in a circle (thus the band name) and it is the best circle of the circles by far. I love the unique folksy songs and you can just picture the musicians playing in a circle with their eyes closed praising to the one true God above. Ben Pasley and Don Chaffer have written brilliant songs that will always find a place in my CD player. Only criticism is that the female vocals sometimes sound a bit whiny. But for the most part, everything sounds great and I wish there were more out their singing with such passion!
Awesome God Praise.......2004-11-02
100 Portraits and Waterdeep have an uncanny way of presenting music that sounds like something God would want to hear! They sing Psalms and praise in such a fresh and simple way. I just love this CD. The simplicity of the songs seems to enable a deeper connection to the Lord while I listen.
true worship that's simple and beautiful.......2003-02-07
'enter the worship circle' is a worship experience you don't want to miss! the lyrics are simple so you can catch on quickly. the music is simple [guitar, i think] and let's you focus on God rather than the music. the worship is so fresh and real that it just draws you in and encourages you to worship God. no fancy sound effects or instruments. there's also a booklet that gives you some advice on how to write your own worship music. it's an amazing cd :) a definite must-have!
Best Worship CD thus far..........2002-11-16
If you call yourself a Christian and have not at least heard this CD, you are truly missing out on real worship and intimacy with Jesus. 100 Portraits and Waterdeep have been absolutely filled with the Holy Spirit in the creation of this album. The songs are truly God breathed, coming from Divine inspiration. This CD will change your life! I cannot even begin to choose a favorite song...every single one is awesome! If you are really wanting to experience God in a way you never have before...get this CD! I recommend listening to it in your room alone; just let the words sing to your heart and you will have one of the greatest times in worship with our awesome Father. Just let God come and meet you half way....He wants to speak to you through this album!
Get ready to be inspired.......2002-02-27
I was so inspired by this album; the music, the emotion, the honesty and the simpleness of the rhythms and sounds. The instructions inside the jacket helped me to write many of my own songs. If you enjoy worshiping God, you'll enjoy this CD.

Though he earned earliest acclaim as a blues traditionalist, Taj Mahal is no purist. Instead, he's an eclectic artist who finds common spirit with the blues in a multicultural array of styles. This album's acoustic arrangements lace the ukuleles, slack and steel guitars of Hawaii (where Taj lived for 15 years) with the airier strains of flute and saxophone and the lilt of the African kalimba. Within this follow-up to 1998's Sacred Island, the music island-hops from the Pacific to the Caribbean, as a blend of reggae and calypso influences highlight "Great Big Boat," "King Edward's Throne," and "African Herbsman." Taj and his Hula Blues band additionally apply their transformational power to a sinuously propulsive rendition of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower," as well as providing syncopated renewal for traditionals "Black Jack Davy" and "Stagger Lee" plus Mississippi John Hurt's "My Creole Bell." Straying furthest from bedrock blues, the lovely Hawaiian balladry of "Moonlight Lady" shimmers like moonbeams dancing across the ocean ripples. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
The wistful blues.......2003-10-02
Has Taj Mahal lost it? One might think so after a superficial listen to his latest outing. Closer attending renders a different conclusion.
It's all about the vibe, here--one that, apparently, not everyone can get on board with. How can you have the blues on Hawaii? Or in the Caribbean? Simple. Not everyone is a plantation owner or scuba-diving tourist guide. Read V. S. Naipaul's great book, The Middle Passage, and find out what it means to be a "client culture."
Yes, there's a kind of inanity in much of the lyrics (although a good portion of them are traditional). Yes, this is miles from Mississippi John Hurt (although it contains one of his tunes), let alone Cory Bell or even Muddy Waters.
But you know what? Taj Mahal still works his magic here: The trademark vocal gruffness, esp. manifesting itself at the end of "Blackjack Davey" (easy to see where Captain Beefheart got his basic approach from), the raw edge of his electro-acoustic guitar (which has pretty much replaced his National Steel guitar), the loosy-goosy ensemble playing--all of which is perfectly suited to the island-blues vibe he's evoking here.
I, for one, celebrate this nifty transformation of the blues into an island key. And if you've got big ears, I think you will too.
What a waste.......2003-09-09
I've played it through three times and am going to junk it.
It's [bad] - incredibly repetitive lyrics.
Whatever happened to the real Taj Mahal?
This is the last time I ever pay any attention to a magazine music reviewer. I would definitely like to have my money back.
Island Taj.......2003-07-29
I've been a Taj Mahal fan for over two decades now, and the man never ceases to amaze me with his variety, artistry and creativity. My first initiation to Taj was through his early standard acoustic blues covers and originals, then I followed along as he tried his hand at blues-infused African rhythms, Reggae, Pop, Soul and duets with diverse musicians such as Toumani Diabate and Ry Cooder. This time around Taj combines blues with Hawaiian music and the results are stunning. From the great Hawaiian blues rendition of Dylan's 'All Along the Watchtower', to the hauntingly beautiful Taj Mahal original 'Moonlight Lady', this is some incredible music. There are also some interesting blues standards here given new life with Hawaiian blues flavor, such as Mississippi John Hurt's "My Creole Bell' and the blues standard "Stagger Lee". Overall, this is a very impressive new release by one of blues music's true living legends, Taj Mahal. Highly recommended for fans of Taj, lovers of Hawaiian folk music, or fans of blues music everywhere.
This is great stuff!.......2003-07-06
We were in Kauai for Christmas 2001 and they have kiosks which sell mostly Hawaiian music (slack key, etc) I spotted a Taj Mahal alblum on display and the clerk told me he lived on the island. I had not heard from Taj since the late 60's in San Francisco and was pleased to see he was still around. The clerk demo'ed a German release of this alblum and his Sacred Island alblum. I was blown away. It was the sound track for our two week vacation. My 86 year old father was with us and he loved it too. Sadly, he passed away shortly after our return. I still listen to these two often and remember our time there. Last Monday Taj was at Humphrey's in San Diego and we saw him there. After the show when only a dozen or so people were remaining, he came out and chatted with us. He is so pleasant and unpretentious and talented.
This cd gives the blues..........2003-07-05
This cd gives the blues, but not in the way intended. This is a disappointing cd from a musician who has produced many great works. The music draws from Hawaiian music, but not enough. What comes out is a water down version mixed with a dash of R&B.
The band is not much better in concert. I recently saw them at the Fillmore in SF. They appear to be very good musician, but there is no spark. All the energy was coming from Taj. He had three ukulele players, and this could have been a great opportunity to show mainlanders what a great ukulele musician can do with four strings. But, these musician only played rhythm and mostly the three chords all ukulele students learn in the first lesson, G, F and A. My son and I, the next night, went to a concert of hawaiian music which was excellent by Amy Gillion, Willie K and Makana.
I advise getting Taj Mahal with the Phantom Band or earlier material. If you want hawaiian music visit the international music section at Amazon.com and try some of the musician listed above, or others such as Ohta-San, Sistah Robi, Iz, or many of the excellent slack key guitarist.

These are the sounds of the American melting pot in full boil, a vibrant study in musical and cultural collision. The companion box set to the four-part PBS documentary, this four-disc set skims the cream of 20th-century American "roots music"--music based in its own rich ethnic, geographical, and cultural traditions yet malleable and responsive enough to accommodate elements borrowed from other traditions. The 68 songs here traverse country, blues, folk, gospel, Cajun, zydeco, Tejano, and Native American styles, and while there are obviously huge differences between these songs, it's the similarities that are truly remarkable. Thanks to a cross-pollination facilitated by radio, recording technology, and the highway system, traditional American musical forms bounced off each other like atoms--European tradition met African tradition, urban met rural, Northern met Southern, secular met spiritual, and so it goes. This project allows you to trace each genre's development while simultaneously illustrating its connections to other forms. Like any project of this nature, you can lament all the great music that didn't make it--jazz, in fact, is completely ignored except for one boogie-woogie piano duet, presumably because Ken Burns already covered this territory--but it's difficult to find fault with what did make it here. The producers balance well-known original recordings with 20 newly recorded tracks and nine songs taken from archival film sources. Housed in a stylish hard-bound case and boasting detailed song-by-song notes and great photos, the American Roots Music box makes for a valuable gateway into America's musical heritage and a springboard for further investigation. --Marc Greilsamer

Customer Reviews:
Gotta Love The Uncle Dave Macon.......2006-01-12
My wife and I had been eyeing this boxset for a few years now and she finally broke down and got it for me this past holiday season. It's a nice mix of country, blues, gospel, cajun/zydeco, tejano and native American. Overall, the box set is excellent. I don't think there is a bad tune on there, but I do feel it felt short on gospel, folk, cajun, zydeco, tejano and native American styles. There's only about 6 or 7 tracks for each of those styles where an entire 16-19 track disc is dedicated to both country and blues. The set should have been 6 discs instead or it should have been limited to just country and blues. Likewise, I felt it strange that an American Roots boxset included no jazz, for jazz is the only true first American born music, which is based on the blues of course. It's a great collection though and I enjoy listening to it every time. The long wait was worth it. I highly recommend it.
Nearly Perfect.......2004-07-06
The PBS American Roots Music series - both the 4 part documentary on DVD and 4 CD boxed set - is a commendable work. It is an incredible education in not only popular American music and culture, but history, and should be required viewing and listening in high schools.
Many of the problems in American Society and its youth today stem from a complete lack of pride and self-awareness. A quick survey of popular music and culture reveal a frightening level of ignorance of America's history, values, and ideals. In short, while the series focusses on America's musical traditions, it does a fantastic job of conveying a sense of America's "roots" in a positive, enriching manner.
The DVD documentary strikes a perfect balance between glossing over, and becoming bogged down in, the material. Unlike the Ken Burns' projects that exhaust the viewer's interest and collapse under their own weight, the series is informative and educational, yet entertaining. It is not MEANT to be an exhaustive treatise on the subject - and so some reviewers here are missing the point - that would take 40, not 4, episodes. Rather, it is an introduction and a sampler; peaking our curiosity and prompting us to investigate and research further the wonderful heritage of music out there. And in that, it succeeds marvelously.
What also impressed me was the documentary's remarkable objectivity. While it eschews political correctness, it doesn't necessarily candy coat anything either. What it does do is present the material in a respectful, thoughtful, intelligent, and unbiased manner - something so lacking in today's political and social discourse. So in this sense, folks looking for something with an "agenda" - conspiracies, skeletons in the closet, and historical revisionism - may be disappointed by the documentary.
The CD boxed set is equally well-done: a fantastic booklet, thorough liner notes, and collection of songs that is a music lover's dream. Again, it is intended to be a sampler - great songs by landmark artists - not an exhaustive account of American Roots music. And also like the documentary, its meant to be a enriching, uplifting - not deconstructing - experience.
If the series has a shortcoming, it is the absence of one of the major "roots" - Jazz - which was no doubt and most unfortunately excluded, because of the recent Ken Burns' PBS documentary. But to exclude Jazz from the discussion of American Roots music, means we do not have the entire picture. And so in that sense, the series is somewhat flawed.
Still, its hard to find any other fault with the series. This is a work that TRULY embraces and celebrates America's cultural diversity. Entertaining and enlightening, I would heartily recommend owning the box set and DVD for one's own edification as well as a way to help introduce friends and family to REAL American music - in all its forms.

An Awsome Collection Of Hard To Find Roots Music In A Box
Set Thats Worth The Money
Gotta have it.......2003-02-17
Excellent collection, except I wish they could have picked another B.B. King tune than the overrated "The Thrill Is Gone."
scattered roots.......2001-11-13
One doesn't envy anyone charged with the task of assembling a collection of essential recordings in America's many folk and vernacular genres. As such things go, American Roots Music is decent enough, though inevitably anyone who knows the music will wonder at the omissions (for example, of Dock Boggs or any of the classic old-time string bands). Perhaps the major problem here is that the four discs encompass such a range of styles that they can hardly begin to do justice to any one of them. The serious listener will already have much of this in his or her collection. Of course it's not exactly a painful sacrifice to hear "Waiting for a Train," "Uncle Pen," "Black Snake Moan," "Cross Road Blues," or any of a number of other warhorses, yet again. I was least familiar with the music on Disc #4 (Cajun/Zydeco/Tejano/Native American) and so enjoyed it the most. A particular treat is Mingo Saldivar's lively version of the old Johnny Cash hit "Ring of Fire." Saldivar doesn't just sing the lyrics in Spanish; he reinvents the melody, making it sound as if "Ring" were always supposed to be a conjunto tune. The disc ends anticlimactically, however, with the inexplicable inclusion of a New-Ageish composition, when a reprise of the wonderful series theme song (a movingly organic rendition of "Worried Man Blues" by performers representing a variety of traditions) would have been a more proper send-off. As a primer set in an unusually attractive package, American Roots Music will do, more or less, but seasoned followers of our homegrown sounds will seek their pleasures elsewhere.

Tribute?.......2007-05-12
I have been a blues fan and a fan of Led Zeppelin for years. [...] It is not the roots, but elements of Zeppelin constantly brought up throughout the albums. Along with the roots, they may have stolen the whole tree. Songs like 'When the Levee Breaks' and 'Nobody's Fault but Mine' are near identical to the originals but if you look at the writing credits for Zeppelin, they go to the band. I view this album as more of an expose than a tribute to blues. It's more of the painful reality that American racism kept the original blues down and instead all you heard was a hyped-up echo that was British bands like Zeppelin, The Who, and the Stones. Sure, they did a lot to unearth the origins, but this album is a reminder that respects haven't been fully paid just yet.
But back on top. This album is good. It's a good reflection of early blues with Mr. Johnson and Leadbelly, among other greats. Good album if you want to hear the originals.
metaphors don't get much thinner than "i want a piece of your custard pie".......2005-07-11
the only thing that keeps me from giving this five stars is the lack of howling wolf songs on here... "no place to go" (sometimes called "you gonna wreck my life") comes to mind first. but it's a great transition cd: i let friends borrow it who are kinda hesitant to get into blues but already love zeppelin.
It's Not What You Think!.......2000-12-21
First of all do not get the impression that this is a remake of Zeppelin tunes. This is the raw source from where Jimmy and the boys had cut their teeth on. If you are a stanch blues fan like I am, you will appreciate this disk for what it represents. If not, then you will find no use for it. I personally like knowing what inspired certain artists and enjoyed this copulation. If you weren't a blues fan before, it will introduce you to a new (old) area of music field that is very entertaining and satisfying, compared to the norm.
I gave this a 3 star rating because I owned most of the selections, prior to listening to "The Roots of Led Zeppelin".

Makes you want to go!.......2006-04-18
Austin City Limits. For over 30 years, ACL has transcended style, age, and anything else that divides musicians (and their fans) to bring some of the best music around. I tend to be a bit musically schizophrenic, so I love the diversity that ACL brings. I looked forward to the CD, figuring I would be able to enjoy some old favorites and find some new 'must haves.' I wasn't disappointed.
The CD opens up with "Debaser" by the Pixies. I've never been much of a Pixies fan for whatever reason, but this was a pretty good selection (though I'm not sure I'd have started the CD off with it). Dashboard Confessional and Franz Ferdinand were both excellent. And the Blind Boys of Alabama doing "Walk In Jerusalem" (one of my alltime favorite spirituals) made the album for me.
A few bands I hadn't heard before were Los Lonely Boys, Calexico, and Drive-by Truckers. These bands reminded me why I love compilation CDs so much - you always find something new to listen to.
Every CD has its weak points, though, and this CD had a few. I wasn't impressed with Broken Social Scene - I found the vocals to be a little weak, but I chalk that up to my own musical taste. I'm also not a big Shelby Lynne fan. But the weak parts of the CD are more than made up for by the new discoveries I made.
They say that diversity is the spice of life. If that's the case, the Austin City Limits festival is a spicy dish indeed. And I like spicy.
Some of the best names in the indie scene are here.......2005-11-15
This compilation live album captures snippets of the performance of some of today's best independent artists around. Opening with a comeback performance by Pixies, the album dashes by great deliveries from the likes of Josh Rouse, Montreal-based Broken Social Scene, My Morning Jacket and Ben Harper to name a few. Granted that the full price is a bit too much, you can always get one of the used copies offered here for less.
Overall, an excellent selection of music. My only issue with it (and most of these live compilations) is that they can only capture a tiny piece of the real thing, which is why I give it four stars.
Too much heat in Austin..........2005-09-16
I'm glad that I can get to hear this music from the comfort of my air-conditioned living room, because I don't think I'd be as pleased as most attendees seem to be here, considering the size of the crowd and the high temperatures. Despite conditions that would send me reeling in search of the nearest air-conditioned tavern, the oversized crowd is apparently enjoying themselves, which makes sense as you listen to (or watch) these excerpts.
Diversity is the key here, with acts from virtually every corner of contemporary music contributing a song. Perhaps the best thing about this release is its diversity, because it allows the viewer to familiarize themselves with acts that otherwise might have been overlooked. Fans of the Pixies get a chance to hear My Morning Jacket (and vice-versa), while fans of Sheryl Crow get a gander at The Soundtrack of Our Lives (both on the DVD only).
The DVD is the better deal here, since it contains two disks, and contains eight performances not included on the CD release. Oddly, some of the best performances are edited from the CD, particularly the stellar performance of Soundtrack of Our Lives (perhaps the best of all included here) and Howie Day's odd `solo' performance with multiple tape-looped versions of himself as accompaniment.
Consistency is in short supply, though, and both the disk and the CD drag at times. Broken Social Scene's "Anthem for a 17 year-old Girl" is about as tedious as the title suggests. Los Lonely Boys make an attempt to channel the spirit of Stevie Ray Vaughan on a track called "Crazy Dream", but they end up falling far short of their mark. Better is the Old 97's, who get by just fine by sounding exactly like their smart-ass selves on "The New Kid", and Roseanne Cash, whose understated presence lends some grace to the disk with "Seven Year Ache." Unfortunately, though, 100-degree temperatures can suck the energy out of a person, and the languid, mid-tempo pace of many performances included here seems to reflect the heat in ways that might not translate, especially in the comfort of my regulated, 68-degree environment. All in all, the Austin City Limits Music Festival is impressive for attracting a wide variety of musicians, but its occasional lack of energy and continuity render it ultimately less than satisfying. Album Description
Ron Miles lives in a constantly shifting musical landscape. Always, it is the conversation with other musicians which affects his landscape with shadow, light, and color. This quartet immediately understands-- with seemingly telepathic clarity-- Ron's musical tableau, and they bring to it their own visions and stories. It is when these stories come together that we find ourselves moving through this brilliantly changing landscape.

Talent deserving wider recognition........2004-08-19
Subtle seems the best way to describe the music of Ron Miles. Primarily known as trumpet-playing sideman to guitarist Bill Frisell and as arranger for Ginger Baker's recent jazz projects, Ron Miles has come into his own as a writer and composer. His take on melody, harmony and rhythm can all be described as subtle. But that is certainly not meant to sell his music short. For the attentive listener, Miles' music reveals endless rewards.
This scaled-down quartet date retains similarities with his final Grammavision release Woman's Day. Ruddy Royston's polyrhythmic drumming and Anthony Cox's sturdy bass support Miles' melodic trumpet excursions. But it is in guitarist Brandon Ross' bag of effects pedals that we hear the sound of surprise. His guitar tone and solo approach varies with practically each piece. The sweetly melodic accompaniment of the opening pastoral ballad "Parade" is contrasted with his distorted solo on the following "New Breed Leader". Although there is sonic variety, this is no post-modern, stylistic grab bag. Miles' writing is, as with the best jazz writers, distinctly his own.
Borrowing heavily from laid back Midwestern country and soulful, mellow swing, Miles' music sounds like a distant cousin to Frisell's own recent excursions into the sound of the heartland. "Sunday best" could easily be mistaken for the sort of catchy tune Frisell himself would pen. But where Frisell has recently strayed from more discordant and edgy material, Miles' seems unafraid of occasionally venturing forth into the maelstrom.
The quartet's experimental edge is best exemplified by the closing track, "Fairy Court", an ostinato-driven free-form jam, with a cooking rhythm section and killer guitar and trumpet work to boot. Wah-wah guitar and plaintive trumpet ride over a steadily rising backbeat during "Psychedelic Blackman". Although more energetic than the other pieces on the album, these are definitely highlights.
Ron Miles is not an especially well-known player in today's jazz scene. Being based out of Colorado can have that effect on a contemporary jazz artist. But don't let that stop you from checking him out. His work deserves wider recognition.

Beautiful stealth "out" jazz.......2003-11-04
I'm totally blown away by this disc. What intelligence! What glorious, off-kilter, unfettered jamming! What brilliant (though in no way show-offish) compositions! What stunning group improv!
Listen. This is it. So what if Ron Miles, trumpeter extraordinare, resides in that Western cow-town, Denver, CO? So what if his band is relatively unknown? So what if this disc is on Sterling Circle Records (Wha . . . )? These guys can play. The revelation, for me, is Rudy Royston (Who?) on drums. Check him out on "New Breed Leader," ostensibly a post-bop workout, but in reality an ultra-hip, fluidly swinging, unclassifiable number. Royston's all over his kit, providing deep grooves even as he rhythmically deconstructs this intriguing number. Brandon Ross, e-guitar, also provides some unbelievable fireworks. Sounding like a cross between Jimi Hendrix and Pat Metheny circa Off-Ramp, he lets loose with a frenetic though thoroughly controlled blast of healing e-guitar indecipherability. When Royston comes in for his solo two-thirds of the way through, things reach critical mass. Bam! Splat! Shimmer! He blasts through the sonic sound barrier with warp-drive percussion madness. Controlled sonic mayhem, that's one plausible description.
Brandon Ross--why does the name resonate just behind consciousness?--takes center stage on the next number, "Psychedelic Black Man" (Ahem), with sustained wah-wah incredulity. That morphs into some incredibly beautiful balladic contemplation: "Still Small Voice" and "Jesus Loves Me," each of which, in their own way, showcases the leader's rich, burnished open trumpet playing. The dialogic interplay between guitar and trumpet on the latter provides unlooked-for sonic balm and opens the way for Anthony Cox, surely one of the great acoustic jazz bassists on the scene today, to bring it all together in a revelatory and mesmeric bass solo, which in turn leads into a great sprung-rhythm out solo from Miles, undergirt by sympathetic support from the band.
The next to last cut, "Sunday Best," a simple-sounding though very sophisticated number, proves Ron Miles can do just about anything. Graced with an impossibly catchy tune, succinct, evocative, I'm left with an uncontrollable desire to hit the "repeat" button. "Fairy Court," the last and perhaps most "normal" number here, nevertheless contains some weird restless energy magnificently uncovered by Brandon Ross's stunningly ideosyncratic guitar solo and continued by a free passage that somehow makes complete sense.
Yes, this isn't your normal jazz outing, But there's nothing to fear. What we have here is simply gorgeous, original, nearly a-referential, modern music. Not to be missed.

They say third time's a charm, and Enter The Worship Circle meets our expectations! With eclectic melodies tailored by the voices of Ben and Robin Pasley, Barry & Michelle Patterson and Kate Hurley this album is a worthy continuation of the insanely popular Worship Circle series. The recording is as live and rambunctious as any before, and the feel of being in a living room surrounded by hand drums and people who love God is tangible...
Customer Reviews:
Amazing!.......2005-02-20
This cd is amazing!!!! The best one yet. Some of the most beautiful worship songs that I have everr heard!!
Third Circle = the best yet.......2004-06-06
One could only imagine my excitement when two of my favorite bands, Waterdeep & 100 Portraits, joined together to make a worship album; I wasn't disappointed. The "First Circle" was an amazing experience, but it didn't end there. 100 Portraits gave us another Circle, which was also good but not as good as the first. Now, with the "Third Circle," Ben & Robin Pasley (100 Portraits) have joined thier incredible talent and rhythms with Kate Hurley and Berry & Michelle Patterson to record the most incredible worship album I have ever heard. The songs are extremely intimate as only guitars and hand percussion instruments are used, but they are also filled with life, moving the listener into the presence of God. This is a must have album! Finally, some inovative Christian music that is setting standards instead of simply copying redundant mainstream junk.
Does Not Disappoint.......2003-12-31
Yes, like you, I was hesitant to purchase the third installment of Enter The Worship Circle. Yes, like me, you will purchase this album and not be disappointed.
The First installment blew me away (four stars). The Second was good and had it's moments but was redundant in places to the first (3 stars). The Third installment might actually be as good, if not better than the first, because it manages to match the first in emotional punch and lyrical beauty yet retains a freshness it shouldn't have as a sequel but does.
If this album doesn't make you get up and dance and sing along then you probably have died and NOT gone to heaven.
music is a candle, is a portal to God.......2003-11-20
This CD was mailed to me right here in the middle of a stressful time in art college- I have escaped into it every evening, and even brought it to listen to in my studio. I am an avid follower of the Pasley's, and their hearts, and the hearts of the other people on this album are so sincere and beautful. Tracks 5, 11, and 14 are my favorites!
