Product Description
This CD contains an entire performance of the musical hit, GUYS ON ICE, as performed in Door County, Wisconsin in the fall of 1999. At that time, the show was a one-act. (It was expanded into two acts in 2000.) The recording features the late playwright Fred Alley as Lloyd, Doug Mancheski as Marvin, and James Valcq playing the piano and appearing as Ernie the Moocher. Alley and Valcq created the musical of THE SPITFIRE GRILL.
Customer Reviews:
Fun, offbeat show.......2007-01-14
An ice fishing musical? A show about two guys in a hut on the ice? The best Wisconsin musical ever? Surprise, both the show and songs are pretty good.
Sure it's a little cornball with terse men (in the Lake Wobegon tradition) and lots of ice fishing jokes, but it's also clever, fresh, with fun, listenable songs, many of which have a depth and sweetness as unexpected parallels are drawn between ice fishing and life. The CD is not just the songs, it's (most of) the show. It was recorded during a performance so you hear the audience laughing at the jokes making it more fun. Recommended.
Minor quibble -- the CD description and liner notes claim it is the whole show, but I recently saw the show at a local theater in its New England premier and the beginning of the second act (circa 2007) is missing from the CD.

Warm and Nicely Done!.......2002-12-19
If you were to buy a release by Mustard's Retreat, this may be the one, since it highlights their strength: live performance. I have witnessed around 30-40 of them dating back to 1979, in their days in the bars and pubs of Flint, MI, and their warmth is nicely captured here.
Typical of their song selection is: 'Part Of Me Remembers', a sincere but not sappy song about loss that always brings a tear to my eyes; 'Detroit 1763', a first-person documentary which is among many they cull from Michigan history; and 'One Meatball', just one example of their great sense of humor.
Whether you're a folk purist or more of a pop-music fan, ANY Mustard's Retreat release will have something for you, but this one is still probably their all-around best!

Splendid Autobiographical Songwriting from Nancy McCallion.......2006-10-19
This may be the most autobiographical of the CDs made by that great, late Irish Celtic/Mexican/Country/Bluegrass band, The Mollys, which earned ample critical acclaim from the likes of The Washington Post, and frequent visits to such notable New York City venues as Lincoln Center's Live-Out-of-Doors Festival held each summer in August, and the Rodeo Bar, one of the premier venues for country music in New York City. For many years they were the best musical export from my favorite Southwestern city, Tucson, AZ, and though I have heard quite a few Irish Celtic, Country and Bluegrass bands since then, especially here, in of all places, New York City, none of the bands I've heard have matched the splendid chemistry exhibited by the original members of The Mollys, including its founding female vocalists and guitarists, Catherine Zavala and Nancy McCallion. Here Nancy McCallion has written a captivating musical autobiography which pays more homage to her country roots than to Irish Celtic and other influences. I still don't understand why The Mollys never became the commercial success which I - and many other fans of theirs from Tucson and elsewhere - thought that they would be. And yet, on a somewhat happier note, if you happen to visit Tucson's The Boondocks bar on New Year's Eve this year, then you'll be treated to an extraordinary musical event; the latest "reunion" concert of The Mollys's original band members, including my favorite Mexican-American "colleen", Catherine Zavala, and of course, Nancy McCallion. Let's hope that this "reunion" concert will be the first of many, including more visits to the Big Apple, so that those unfamiliar with The Mollys will hear their excellent music at venues like Lincoln Center's Live-Out-of-Doors Festival and the Rodeo Bar.

Customer Reviews:
Yet another splendid fusion of Bluegrass/Celtic/Country/Folk/Mexican/Rock and Roll from The Mollys.......2006-11-08
Without question, "Moon over the Interstate" has to rank as one of the most important albums made by The Mollys during their nearly decade-and-a-half-long run as the best Bluegrass/Celtic/Country/Folk/Mexican/Rock and Roll band from my favorite city in the Southwest, Tucson, AZ. This fine album earned considerable praise from The Washington Post, which regarded it as among the ten best of 1997. Indeed, it still remains a favorite album played by folk and country music radio stations around the country. My own personal favorites from this album are two fine ballads written by band co-founder Nancy McCallion, "Rosie" and "Cash for Gold", but the rest sounds quite great too with splendid accordian playing from Kevin Schramm and fine performances on bass and guitar from Dan Sorenson, Catherine Zavala and of course, Nancy McCallion. On drums Gary Mackender did a great job pounding out Celtic, Country and Mexican beats on his kit. Without question, the chemistry and synergy I heard from The Mollys was absolutely superb, easily eclipsing anything I have heard here in New York City's relatively nascent bluegrass and country music scene (Indeed, The Mollys performed in New York City several times before there was an emergent, somewhat vibrant, bluegrass/country music community here in the Big Apple.).
During the approximately 14 years of their existence, The Mollys earned critical acclaim from the Washington Post and appeared frequently at major folk and country festivals throughout the United States. They made a successful tour of Italy back in 2000, and they also had successful tours of Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, Ireland and Canada. Here in New York City they were invited to perform twice at Lincoln Center's Live-Out-Of-Doors Festival held annually in August, and made several visits too to the Rodeo Bar in Manhattan, which is regarded by some as the premier venue for country music in New York City. Those fortunate to be visiting Tucson on New Year's Eve this year will have the opportunity to hear the latest The Mollys' reunion concert at The Boondocks Lounge featuring its original lineup. Hopefully this may yield someday a more permanent reunion and future visits elsewhere around the country, including New York City.
More energizing than a pot of coffee!.......2002-02-23
Wow, this band brings music to a new level. The best (& maybe the only) Irish-Mexican band around. The song writing of Nancy McCallion provides defined images and evokes an array of emotions. You not only hear this music, you feel it and are happy you did. The masterful talent of Kevin Schramm on accordion makes this instrument sound and act like nothing you ever heard before!! This music makes you want to celebrate. Hats (I guess sombreros) off to a super band with yet another fantastic album.
The best Irish Mexican Polka band in the world.......2000-10-24
I hardly know where to start. . . . I ran across this band at the Abbey Pub in Chicago a couple of years ago, and have been a big fan since. Anyone interested in Irish-New Mexican Polka music will enjoy this record, and that's just for starters. Nancy McCallion has become one of my favorite writers--not just songwriters, writers period. Check out Sierra Madre, Aqui Estaba Mi Casita, all of 'em. Wonderful musical storytelling sensibility. I've yet to hear Only a Story, but no reason to suspect it's not great. As a live act they are not to be missed. (Although sadly, the marvelous Catherine Zavala has left the band. Sniff.) Anyway, buy all their albums and see them live. You are unlikely to be disappointed.

Product Description
"A Gathering of Moments" is a collection of David Tamulevich's most recent writings. For those who were endeared by the softer, deeper elements on "A Resolution of Something" (2004), this album is very much in that school. With flowing guitar instrumentation -- showcasing the seasoned musicianship of David Tamulevich and Michael Hough -- the songs on this album are complemented by sincere and humble lyrics. But only when fitting. These fellas endeavour to let the music stand for itself in a fashion only boldly undertaken by veteran songwriters. Tamulevich's tone is the voice of a generation -- not condescending, just rich with humble wisdom and simple truths. As if to emphasize the maturity reflected in this album, "The Night Goes On Forever" is a collaboration Hough and Tamulevich accomplished with the help of a local Michigan classroom of students -- and reflects the whimsy still preserved in Mustard's Retreat.
