Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Good film music should be seen and not heard--that is, it's usually there for background, to reinforce what you're seeing, not to draw attention to itself. So why listen to it? Often that's a mystery, but the items in this collection seem to have been selected because they are interesting music (Prokofiev, Copland, Bernstein) or because they are so familiar that they bring back memories of favorite movies (Laura, High Noon, Star Wars). Like much movie music, a lot of these items are sentimental and overblown, even the more famous ones. (Those famous screaming strings in Psycho can sound silly without the onscreen action.) But if you want one movie-music CD in your collection, this may be the one to have. --Leslie Gerber

Worth it for "Conquest" alone.......2005-09-12

The stirring martial music from the movie "Captain from Castille" ("Conquest") is on this album and so far as I know it's the only CD you'll find it on. But other tracks are great also, including the "Parade of the Charioteers" from "Ben Hur," the theme from "The Magnificent Seven," and "The Imperial March" from Star Wars.

A GREAT COMPILATION!.......2005-06-05

I've come to appreciate soundtracks more and more. This compilation progresses chronologically through 60 years of film music, starting with 1939's "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood", and ending with "Titanic". It encompasses a huge range of styles. Along with the usual suspects - music from "Ben-Hur", "The Magnificent 7", "Star Wars", et al, there are a few real sleepers, like John Barry's medieval-flavored theme to "The Lion in Winter", or Leonard Roseman's lyrical "East of Eden". Blessedly, most of the tracks are original recordings, conducted by the composers, among them Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland. Only those of us burned by tinny, tacky, sacriligiously rearranged retreads on obscure labels can appreciate this.

There are a few notable omissions. The prolific Randy Newman isn't represented, though Uncle Alfred is. And NO Ennio Morricone? - incredible! Presumably, this has more to do with Sony's current copyrights and contracts than the relative merits of the composers. And it's fine to have John Williams included twice, but why two pieces from "Star Wars"? Why not the theme from "Jaws", for instance? Or "Sugarland Express", for a really unexpected treat? But these are minor quibbles. And for whatever it's lacking, there's no fluff substituted. This is real music from fine craftsmen, which sometimes attains art. A great intro to the form, and wonderful just to listen to. I bought it used - one of my best deals ever!

So So Compilation.......2002-01-14

My major interest in this CD was in the selection entitled "Robin Hood And His Merry Men" (duration: 4 min, 28 sec), conducted by John Williams, and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. It turns out that this is a re-issue of the track from Sony Classical SK 62788, 1997. Surprisingly, this performance is poky, ponderous, and prodding. The conducting is, well, somnambulistic. Miking/mixing/processing yields a sonic brick deficient in instrumental nuances while sounding like way too many musicians were shoe horned into the recording studio. As for the rest of the tracks, it's hard to believe, but Silva America offers better compilations! Best to skip this one.

Deserves more than five stars.......2000-06-23

I have several discs of film music, and this one if by far the best. As one of the previous reviewers noted, there are many peices absent that could have been included here, but I don't see how anyone could be completely satisfied with any compilation that fit on just one disc.

The performances here are crisp and clear, and include a good selection of both old and new, ranging from traditional film favorites like the Star Wars theme, to less common selections like the screeching strings from Psycho (at least, I think they're less common, but I could be wrong). And I could listen to the Magnificent Seven theme over and over.

Anyway, this is a great disc for almost anyone. If you're looking for one thing in particular, find that film's soundtrack, but otherwise, this is a fantastic disc, and one of my favorites!

Great CD;the music is crystal clear with an excellent variety demonstrating the wide variety of musical talents in Hollywood. Liner notes are also most interesting, explaining some of the history behind the cuts and pointing out differences in the composers styles...as with John Barry. His style ranges from "the Lion in Winter" bold dramatic soundtrack to the exquisitley tender "Dances with Wolves" theme music. A CD to enjoy over and over

Album Description

This album is the work of a Gangster: not just any gangster mind you, but an unliving, unstoppable, undying power that keeps the very center of his time piece ticking. As seconds, minutes, hours, and days fly by, time remains still for Blaze. A victim of gang violent, turned rotted corpse with his mind on avenging his own death through total annihilation of those who had a hand in robbing him of his once mortal life. His rage and anger echoes from the speakers like a blast of a sawed-off shotgun at close range leaving all who hear it riddled with shell shock. Physicians and scientists alike are baffled at the very idea of this walking, animated dead man, and although there is no information to back it up, officials believe that the center of his re-animation is brough about by the blood-soaked and bullet-vented clock he was buried with. His recordings have also been somewhat of a mystery as well, drying up in record stores across the nation, and becoming completely out of print unitl now with the release of this essential collection of Blaze's early years in musical madness. Join the Dead Man himself as we turn back the hands of the clock and take a closer look through time at how the legacy of this immortal G all began.

Blaze.......2007-02-25

There's no possible way I could ever give this album any less than 5 stars. "1 Less G In Da Hood" was practically the soundtrack to my senior year of high school. I remember seeing Blaze live at the "Hatchet Rising Tour." All of these memories are amongst some of the greatest I've ever had. Now onto the music! The album begins with the same intro to Blaze's first EP and contains every song off of the EP minus "S*** Talkers." I used to have that EP so I knew most of the jams anyways. Blaze's voice in unmatchable. If you're into gangsta rap, this is some of the finest you can find. Now onto "1 Less G...." The original version had Jumpsteady as a preacher talking about how great it was that Blaze has died, yada-yada-yada, that's not on here. Instead it kicks straight into "Grave Aint No Place." I was glad to hear that ABK's verse was still here. I know there have been some problems with ABK and Psychopathic, so it's good to hear that they didn't delete them or anything. The only songs missing from "1 Less G..." on this version are the intro, "Str8 Outta Detriot" (an ode to NWA's "Straight Outta Compton"), and "Hatchet Execution". Why they didn't include those tracks is beyond me. I really wish they would have considering the fact that the original version of this album is so hard to find and mine is all scratched up. Next you get 3 new tracks, which are all great. All in all, this is a great release if you no longer own Blaze's first two cds or if you're like me and were unable to take care of the originals. I just wish they wouldn't have taken out any tracks. Highly recommended!

Juggalos--BUY THIS........2007-01-25

Okay, Blaze Ya Dead Homie, also known as Colton Grundy, The Undying. Blaze jumped on Psychopathic as a friend of Twiztid, bringing with him longtime homie ABK as well. From the beginning, most juggalos were at a loss as how much we liked Blaze. There were about 50% that hated him, and another 50% that thought he was fresh. The main thing about Blaze is that his style is not really horrorcore rap in any traditional sense--more like old-school Gangsta rap with a horrorcore twist (the twist being that he presents himself as a man gunned down in a gang shooting 11 years prior, and is now back to his old evil ways, but as an undead, immortal).
If you ask me, that's pretty damn original. That, and the fact that this guy can flow like the river runs, is enough to make me a Blaze juggalo.
But one thing you have to know is that pretty much every song on the album has either the same, or similar, lyrics. But that is THE POINT. Understand that, or you won't like Blaze.
This album is the original Blaze debut EP and his first LP combined, with some of the more pointless tracks removed, and three very fresh new ones added. There are too many tracks on this album to review every one, but the highlights are "Real G S***", "I Go To Work", "Grave Ain't No Place", "Casket", "Juggalo Anthem (AWESOME track)", "Nasty (Hilarious, and very disgusting)", "Hood Rats", "Maggot Face", "Momma I Ain't Changed", and "Garbage". Any juggalo that passed on buying the original EP and LP while they were still in print should pick this up.

Blaze Ya Dead Homie is dead. If you ain't figured that out, he's a thug who was gunned down 11 years back and now has been resurrected to run with the Hatchet.

For y'all who can't stand that type of creativity, then just do what the title of Shaggy 2 Dope's LP says. For y'all juggalos who can feel this, it's a classic. Basically the original 1 Less G in the Hood, along with the self titled EP, are like impossible to find. They're sold on EBay for like 100 bucks a pop.

So it was only right that Blaze rerelease them as one album. The early Blaze classics are all here (except for a couple). "Casket", "Nasty", "Grave Ain't No Place", and "Juggalo Anthem" are all on here along with other cuts and 3 new songs.

The three new ones are "Look Out"(featuring Lavel), "Mama I Ain't Changed", and "Garbage". The last one is far from its title and is actually pretty fresh. "Look Out" was featured in the video game 25 TO LIFE and "Mama I Ain't Changed" is about Blaze's relationship with his moms. The only thing I wished they could have done different on this album is put Blaze's version of "Dead Body Man" on here. I ain't seen it on any CD's yet and it'd be fresh if it could be.

Other then that though, this was another fresh release from Psychopathic Records and everyone's favorite dead homie, Blaze.

not enough Galway.......2003-10-02

There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

I just love this album. I am a wedding minister and many couples ask me about music for their ceremony. I am happy to recommend they buy this album for a wonderful selection of wedding music both traditional and contemporary performed by orchestras, keyboardists, harpists and others including a lovely soprano. One disc is traditional wedding selections and the other is contemporary. The selections are arranged in the order of a ceremony with choices for each part of the ceremony. The CD would be appropriate to use in a wedding if live music is not planned. I plan to add a link to this site from my website just so couples can check this album out for themselves.

This soundtrack is off the cuffing chains. Check out track 1 by Cappadona from the WU TANG. Track 5 by Monalisa is also wicked. Track 11 by UGK ft Keith Murray, hey the list is endless. This soundtrack LP is off the hook. All the artists came to work on this joint. The movie and the LP dropped at a good time 96 when a lot of dope tracks came out.

When I first saw the film I knew the soundtrack'd be sweet, and ever sice I brought it it's been stuck in my player. A few of the songs are slow and smooth, like Time to shine, which has a nice mixture with Lilm Kim & Mona Lisa. Some of the songs like Winter Warz make it to my best hits list, and Funky sounds by Lil Bud & Tizone is Phat. So's Freak It Out by Doug. E. Fresh and Maintain ny Erick Sermon. There's something for everyone, and dependin on how you feel, you can change the tunes to suit you. If your feeling mellow, just stick on Let's Lay Together or Don't give up, but if you're out for some pain & pleasure, go for winter warz or Maintain. Anyways this is a B*****n' album

Highly recommended.......2002-08-20

This pricey UK import CD filled a lot of gaps in my music collection and is an excellent overview of notable music of (mostly) recent films. It's difficult to find consistently listenable soundtrack collections like this, by that I mean free from the obligitory Whitney Houston or Celine Dion embarrassments. Usually rights issues prevent comprehensive compilations like this in the US, too. While I enjoy a lot of soundtrack music, there aren't so many complete soundtracks that I would care to own, some examples of exceptions being Ennio Morricone scores and the About a Boy Soundtrack. While certainly most of these tracks are the actual recordings used in their respective films, I noticed that "La mamma morte" from Philadelphia is not the Maria Callas version. There might be other cases like this, I'm not sure. And "Unchained Melody" from Ghost is an orchestral version, not the pop song (but I consider this a plus). This collection seems to focus on the subtle and quirky, yet melodic music of indie films, with less emphasis on the loud sweeping orchestral scores of major Hollywood hits, but of course there are a few like Gladiator and Braveheart, which are welcome here because like I've said, I probably wouldn't listen to the whole score. I love the two Thomas Newman compositions from American Beauty, and it's good to have some music from films by the Cohen Brothers here. My only complaint would have to be the order of the songs. You would think they would avoid jumping back and forth between pop songs, orchestral scores, and quiet music, but it just seems thrown together by random. I would compare this collection to the excellent "Miramax Films Greatest Hits" but the makers of that album knew to group the two pop/rock songs at the end.

EPICS THAT DO NOT DISAPPOINT.......2007-05-14

WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA TO TAKE HOLLYWOOD'S COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL EPIC MOVIES, EXTRACT THE BEST PORTIONS OF THE SCORES AND COMBINE THEM FROM THE DAWN OF MAN TO THE RECENT PAST. I PARTICULARLY ENJOY THE SUITES FROM GLADIATOR, BRAVEHEART AND THE VIKING. THE REPRODUCTION OF THESE SCORES BY THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS IS BRILLIANT, AND THE RECORDING WAS EXCELLENT. I ONLY WISH THERE WERE EIGHT DISCS INSTEAD OF FOUR TO COVER THE VOLUMES OF SCORES THAT COULD NOT BE INCLUDED. LET'S HOPE FOR A VOLUME II.

This compiiation album makes an excellent gift for that person wanting to discover great, epic scores. I'm surprised, however, that Vangelis' Alexander is included in this one. Not bad, just surprised.

The reason I give this album 4 out of 5 stars is because of the swashbuckler section. How is it that CutThroat Island - one of the greatest epics in history - was scrubbed out of the list? Pirates of the Caribbean is included on the selection but nothing from Debney's masterpiece?!

Yes, that is a huge compilant. If you haven't discovered CutThroat Island, I suggest you get it then you'll understand my frustration. Still, this album is a great buy and worth looking into!

Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come...this collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!
