4 out of 5 stars Takes Me Back.......2007-04-06

Although I am not into this type of rap anymore (I'm 30). I loved this album when I was an 18 year old college kid.

5 out of 5 stars Classic hardcore album.......2006-08-08

Love this album to death. TDF's two best tracks are on here, Dope Dayton Ave and Flinttown. I can listen to those tracks a million times over, in fact I have. They are two of the best hardcore rap tracks ever recorded.

The rest of the album is great. There's only two tracks I'm not too fond of, nutty niggas and billy blunt. The rest of the album is pure magic for a debut.

If you love hardcore gangsta ish by some real G's, get it.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get much harder than this here.......2005-06-21

Dayton Family is a rap group, coming from Flint, Michigan (about an hour from Detroit), growing up in one of the hardest and hopeless ghettos to be found. This album is hard-core to the fullest, it just doesn't get harder than this, it just can't! The album is street-gangsta rap in it's purest form. Those guys (rappers Bootleg and Shoestring, with their producer Steve Pitts) are on a whole new lever when it comes to spitting hard lyrics. Their flows are untouchable, the definition of hardcore rapping, and the whole feel of the album is different than many albums. The Dayton family do not focus on getting rich and gaining some (fading) fame, buying expensive cars and useless jewelery, their mentality is totally different - it's grim and dark. With them it's all about modest survival, just maintaining and staying alive. This album was released nation-wide in 95, but most of it was already released on an indy label ib 93. Yet it won't sound that out of date. The beats are banging', a combination of West Coast and Midwest flavor. Like I said, Shoestring and Bootleg's deliveries are plain ruthless, and the lyrics are some of the most shocking you'll get to hear. They don't hold back for nothing! For exmaple, on the title track you get to hear (over a great beat):
"What's on my mind is a rape in progress/
I got my di** in between some bit** breasts/
What's on my mind is a knife at a ho*'s throat/
I took her gold, her pus**, and her mink coat/"
If you read this, you'll get the idea. Don't think it's some stupid album, all about killing and drug dealing, it's much more. It's about survival, about hustling, and trying to have a normal life in an imposible environment. The album title suits it's content perfectly, the boys speak their mind, and tell about the life they live. Dayton Family is one of the hardest and realest groups ever, and if you are fan of the likes of NWA, Geto Boys, Compton's Most Wanted and Three 6 Mafia, there's no way you won't love "What's On My Mind?", the group's first album (they only released two albums after that) and it is a classic.

4 out of 5 stars Real!.......2005-06-19

When I first saw the promos for the Dayton Family's debut video and album I told everyone I'm getting that album. I wasn't disappointed at all. Everysong on this disc is real and straight to the damn point. F.B.I. was a better album, but this one cannot be overlooked as these young nigga's told a story about life in the hood of Flint was real!

4 out of 5 stars 2 Hard 4 Punks.......2005-01-27

I got this cd after I got FBI. Although most rappers dont have Very good first cd's TDF is an exception. I left a star off cause there are only half a cd of good songs but be assured that these songs are hits. Worth the buy over and over.

4 out of 5 stars another solid album from the Dayton Family - 4.5 stars.......2007-01-16

Bootleg and Shoestring are back after 3 years with a new album, another solid album more like 4.5 stars. This is the 3rd album of their's I have and probably tied for my favorite. With 19 songs, 2 are almost classics, 3 are ok, the other 14 are good (a few being real good). Guests are minimal, rapping on 5 songs (and all are good)and doin the hook on 2. Their formula hasn't changed in the last 10 years, still gangsta/street tales, and they do it good. Production is pretty good (although I'm a little upset Steve Pitts who did alot of their 1st 2 group albums didin't do any). Gee Pierce did 5 sogns, Screwface music did 4 songs, Pee Wee Moore & Bengi each do 3, and Ill Will Fulton, Noize 2 Go, MoSS, and TwinZ each do 1. A nice album for the Dayton Family fans to grab.

#1 - 8
#2 - 8.5 (rock beat)
#3 - 8.5 (f/ Capone)
#4 - 8 (an ode to Chevy's over a rock beat)

5 out of 5 stars Classic TDF.......2006-08-08

Bootleg and Shoestring returned to classic form with this album. Much better than Welcome to the Dopehouse. WOMM and FBI are still better. How 50 Cent sells millions of albums and these guys don't I'll never know. TDF is 10 times better than 50 could ever hope to be. I guess like life, it's all who ya know.

Chevy's is my favorite track (mainly because I roll in a big black chevy blazer). Everything's Chicken (but the bone) is my second fav. The rest of the tracks roll in at #3. No song is weak in my opinion, I wouldn't skip any tracks on this CD, just keep going back to Chevy's a ton of times.

A must have!

5 out of 5 stars best album i have heard in a while.......2006-03-17

Dayton family keeps it hood... they got hot solid tracks from #1 - 19... all i gotta say is that they got love over here in queens.

5 out of 5 stars Sick Cd, From The Michigan Thugs!.......2005-10-03

this cd is a solid production from the boyz who put michigan on the map with the rap scence. Bootleg and Shoestring have sick flows, along with twisted beats. this is a new stle from the Dayton family, but it works for them. I HIGLHY recomend this cd.

GOOD GET IT,
in the name of the father, the son and the holly spirit
God Bless
Peace!

4 out of 5 stars Them Dayton Boys' Are Back!.......2005-09-25

Finally the Dayton Family have released a new album. I was surprised to see this album in stores (I found it at Best Buy here in Dallas). I don't even bother to tell people about this group anymore since I got tired of all the crazy looks people gave me after I told them about Dayton Family. They are very underrated and are unnoticed by BET & MTV. Family Feud should be a good album to bump for all rap fans. The group really shines on the second half of the album with songs like Ass Whoop, Reckless, Dayton N****z, and Can't Get Out. Bootleg and Shoestring continue to drop hardcore (by today's commercial rap standards) rhymes on many songs. Guests include MC Breed, Cormega, and Capone. I just wish the radio stations would play Dayton Family's music so they could make it big. I no longer see this album in stores, Best Buy had a few copies of it then I stopped seeing them. So if you can manage to find this CD, pick it up!

5 out of 5 stars True Texas Country.......2001-02-09

These days, it seems a rarity that my favorite "Austin-sound" artists can maintain their edge. Reckless Kelly has completely changed their style, while the Hollisters have lost their best band members (both have lost my interest).

Fortunately, Jesse Dayton seems to improve over time. While Raising Cain had been on my revolving CD playlist for the last four or so years, it has recently been displaced by his newest "Tall Texas Tales". Jesse's music is aptly described as edgy, progressive country. The songs' characters and stories always keep you emotionally involved, and are supported by Jesse's soulful voice.

Catch Jesse in concert if you can. He puts on a great show!!

5 out of 5 stars BUY EVERTHING W/ JESSE DAYTON ON IT!.......2005-04-17

Admittedly, I first noticed Jesse Dayton's cd in the store because of the handsome face on the cover. Upon further inspection of the album's backside, I noticed my main man Doug Sahm, as well as Flaco Jiminez, were on the album. I figured he had to be pretty good if they were on it. So true..>So damn good!!!!

I wondered: Is there a whole scene of country musicians making records like this?! I went back to the record store in vain to "discover" other artists so talented and distinctive. There was dime-a-dozen alt country and cheesy pop country, but nothing like the real and wonderful sound on this album. He's a completely distinctive musician, surrounded by a band that is positively divinely talented, and his albums just keep getting better and better!

5 out of 5 stars This is real country, not Garth Brooks "country.".......1999-06-09

In this age of Garth Brooks' pseudo-rock theatrics and Alan Jackson's mullet-headed salesmanship, fans of real country music have been hard-pressed to find a new artist they can rely on. On Rasin' Cain, Jesse Dayton plays honest, raw music, with a tip of the hat to legends such as Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, and most evidently, George Jones, while still retaining his originality. Songs like "Blood Bucket Blues" and "Playing With a Memory" draw on sounds from country music's past for inspiration, while giving the listener hope for country music's future.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best rockin country cd ever!.......1999-03-06

Jesse Dayton puts it all on the line with this CD. He makes country rock like no other. His wide vocal range is reminiscent of George Jones. Jesse masters some wild guitar licks while making it sound easy. This boy knows his Texas roots and sticks by them. For a boot-scootin, sing along, good time, this is the CD.

    4 out of 5 stars Possibly 4.5 stars for Dayton Family's 2nd album.......2006-08-11

I really didn't know too much about The Dayton Family, I heard them on a few songs and liked them and saw this album had many good reviews so I checked it out, and needless to say I will be getting some of their other albums. Bootleg & Shoestring, with some rapping by Ghetto E and Baccstabber (who was in prison) hold down the album very nicely and deliver real street hardcore rap, not that watered down radio/video BS that's all over nowadays. With 13 songs, 3 are almost classics, 4 are ok, the other 6 are tight songs. Guests rap on 1 song and do the hook on about half of them, Steve Pitts nicely produces the whole album, with some Co-Production from the Dayton Family. A must have album for fans of real rap.

5 out of 5 stars Best Dayton Family album.......2006-08-08

This CD is a must have for any rap fan. FBI is by far one of the best laid albums ever. Not a single bad track on this album. You can listen to it for days.

How a group like Dayton Family remains unknown and hacks like Cassidy, Fabolous and 50 Cent make millions, I'll never know.

I'm a lifetime fan of TDF since they came out.

Buy it, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars The Midwest's hardest and realest group stays real with this!.......2005-09-20

An year after "What's On My Mind" was released and went gold without any video-play, came out F.B.I. However, the group encountered quite a few problems with the law (problems that continued in years to come) - Baccstabber was gone to prison, and Bootleg's verses were recorded in 2 weeks, since he was going to the big-house as well!... However it doesn't show on the album: the album is strong and perfect as ever, and Bootleg's verses are as tight as they always were!... Nothing really changed about The Dayton Familly - they're still the realest and hardest rappers in the Midwest. On this album (and the others as well) they're still rapping agressively over hard hitting, clean and powerful beats. There's nothing at all subtle about the Dayton Family. They tell it like it is, and if it's shocking to you... well, go pick Nelly/50 Cent's CD. When you hear the Dayton Familly you get to hear their no-way-out mentality with a feel of desperation which is just a part of life. The Dayton boys aren't cocky, they don't floss, they're just troubled guys with a lot on their mind. Nothing is taboo for Bootleg and Shoestring - not murder, not cocaine, not a#@ wooping, not smacking bi#$%s, seemingly nothing. It's so nice to see rappers so unhinged and unconcerned with pop crossover. They are REAL with a capital R. These guys aren't just another hardcore group, there's something unique about them. They not only talk the talk, but they also walk the walk. The were able to overcome so much trouble in their lives and come out with those amazing albums. F.B.I. is a classic without a doubt, although I think I feel their debut a bit better, since the hooks were a bit more catchy (I don't really feel the singing on most of the songs on F.B.I.). Anyway, Bootleg and Shoestring deliver their hardest verses (you gotta hear their voices to understand what hardcore is all about) over Steve Pitts' remerkable beats. You gotta understand - that group that blew up in the 90's was the 1st to bring attention to the Midwest rap scene, way before Eminem ever thought about rapping. Those guys deserve respect - a LOT of it. See, years before there was 8 Mile, there was Dayton Avenue.

Hang on! After the title track storms out of the chute like a bucking bronco, Jesse Dayton takes listeners on a wild ride across roadhouse country. He swaggers his way through "Tall Walkin' Texas Trash" as if channeling the cocksure spirit of Waylon Jennings (with whom Dayton recorded as a guitarist) and conjures the border cantina atmospherics of Doug Sahm on the accordion-laced "All Because of You" and "Moravia." The album takes a detour with a revival of the Cars' "Just What I Needed," rearranged for fiddle and steel guitar. Best of all is the down-home soul of "Ain't Grace Amazing." Riley Osbourn's keyboards and Carolyn Wonderland's backing vocals add a bluesy strain, while the horn charts on "It Won't Always Be Like This" and "Just to Get You Off My Mind" sound more Memphis than Nashville. With some down-and-dirty guitar powering "Talkin' Bobby Dale's Hard Luck Blues," the album never loses its reckless energy nor compromises its independent spirit. --Don McLeese

I heard a Jesse Dayton track on an Americana compilation two years ago. It was pretty good, but didn't prompt me to run out and purchase a CD. My loss.

This is how country music is supposed to sound. There are a couple of tracks that explore a Stax/Memphis soul sound, but the heart of this CD is Texas honky tonk, amiable, fresh and effortlessly enjoyable. My only complaint...and it's a minor one...this is so polished, I'd prefer a few rough edges here and there.

As you can see I review alot of different styles of album most are with an unbiased appraoch.Top songs are Outlaws-"Do you remember"-Welcome to Flint-"Feds"-"Shadows" a very dark beat.We kept it Ghetto-Young Thugs-"Weed Song".There Flows are tight but there not talking about the same stuff 6 years ago(96)The quality of the production has increased on this album and if it were not for a couple of wack songs it would be amazing.

First off for all you people "not feelin the flow", then go bump your 8" sony x-plods to d-12, g-unit, ludacris, ja rule, whatever pop-rap you want. Dayton Family raps about what they know, and living on the north side of Flint myself I know where they are commin from. You spend one night up here and you will never look at ghettos on t.v. the same. You claim your city's number 1 but thats hoe sh*t. For you true Dayton fans if you don't have the album already, pick this up. Its off the hook.

3 out of 5 stars Dope House Huslin.......2004-03-18

I have never heard of this group b4, until some introduce me to this CD. My first listen, i stopped on the 3rd song because the production is great but the lyrics and the subject of their lyric is HORRIBLE. However, I gave it a second chance and listen to it again. Throughout the CD, the production is very SOLID, but the lyric did not sound any better, but however their lyric blend with the production after a couple listen. You will get use to that but it takes time. I never heard any of their old songs, but this CD here, I am already tired of what they are talkin bout, if you want to listen to something like that get TI, he has much more energy. But the production brings it up so this CD is okay.

What a comeback these guys made,it took some time to get together in the studio but worth the wait.I've been a long time fan of Dayton Family and was very happy when I heard this one.My hat is off to you fellas...good work.

5 out of 5 stars Back Down Dayton Ave.......2002-07-24

We Flintstones grew up listenin to Dayton Ave and they always came tru. no sugar coatin no flashy lights no diamonds coverin the REAL-man. This album's no different. I was glad to hear that they're back in the studio together. If they stay hold'n it like this and stay out of trouble The Stone'll be on the Main-stream Hip-Hop map in no time. GO get it and play it loud nothing like tru gangsta rap.
