5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

4 out of 5 stars im on fire for alexis.......2006-08-24

this band captures all the asspects of hard flowing guitars melodic singing intertwined with screaming volcals that get your heart pumping... i love this c.d. it is among many that i own and its one of my absolute favs.

4 out of 5 stars Masterpiece, or Disterpiece.......2006-08-12

To start off.. I just love how people who don't exactly know their facts are writing reviews... mind you, i'm not exactly an ecocopidea regarding AOF and anything to do with them... but at least i try to get my facts straight...

Alexis is a band formed from my hometown (St.Catharines Ontario, CANADA) and to tell you the honest truth i'm personally not to fond of the genre that Alexis is labeled under... but to support the local talant, i gave them a chance... their debute is much more raw, uncut, and more unigue... I guess you could say, their follow up is heading them to the mainstream (sadly enough)... "Watch out" is much more clean, melodic, and more easy on the ears...

Listening to their first album, then listening to this... its almost like an all new band, but of course it still has that AOF flare... Dallas does ALOT more singing on this cd (which isn't a bad thing at all, i bet dallas on this cd has widened their fan base) and as for Georges screaming, its much more polished and easier to listen too...

Now depending on who you are, and what type of music you perfer... "Watch out" can be a masterpiece, or a distasterpiece... Now if your a type of person that likes radio friendly, melodic, easy on the ears, sing along kind of music, with bursts of occasional rawness (if thats a word) that you can head bang to, then "Watch out" is indeed the cd for you... BUT... if your one of those indipendent band lovers, who likes it raw, and hates when bands go mainstream, or step into the lights of stardom... then this isn't exactly the cd for you.. but don't get me wrong... Alexis has something for both types of people... Their self titled is more raw, Watch out is more polished...

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not an expert... so people may disagree with the majority, if not all of what i said... but that is only my opinion...

5 out of 5 stars I fell in love with this.......2006-08-04

This was definitely one of those discs where each song grew on me progressively, one by one and I found myself becoming one of their biggest fans and cheerleaders, letting as many people as possible hear this and allow it to have the same effect on them. The vocals display passion and emotion which is actually pretty rare in todays canned musical ventures. And some of the guitar riffs are just catchy as hell.

If you're a fan of the genre or you've heard good things about the band, you owe it to yourself to check this out and give it a fair shot. I'd be surprised if you were disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Purely sublime..........2006-07-09

This is one of those albums that comes around every so often and makes you really take notice. The first album from Alexisonfire was good, but this is inspired.
The music is a combination of hardcore and emo done in a good way. So many bands today are trying to fit square pegs into round holes in this genre. I love hardcore music and this cd touches on the heaviness of others greats in the field while exploring melody that is actually good. The performances are top notch. The screaming is good, the clean vocals from Dallas are amazing. Musicianship oozes out of this release. This is a must have in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic........2006-05-29

Simply brilliant album, ALEXIS-ON-FIRE are easily my favourate band. No Transitory is quite possibly the best song i've ever heard, ever.

Some people could be put off by George's screaming vocals, but this is perfectly counteracted by the absolute bliss offered by the vocals of Dallas. My god that boy can sing.

Also, alot of people in their reviews have suggested that there is only one singer. Incorrect.
George Petit = Screaming
Dallas Green = Singing
occasionally Wade contributes also, but that is rare

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."

Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

5 out of 5 stars Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars He's done it again.......2002-07-15

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Way to go Michael, you've done it again!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Strange coinkidink.......2006-06-01

I love Steve Hackett, Genesis, et al, but it is a bit unsettling that he named a song 'Mechanical Bride'...That was the name of a band I had in San Francisco in the late 80's... Makes me wonder if he ever saw us perform... Now THAT would be cool.

5 out of 5 stars Hackett the musical chameleon strikes again..........2005-06-26

Former Genesis guitarist turned solo adventurer Steve Hackett returned again in 2003 with this, 'To Watch The Storms', another well recived album that offers many differnt styles of music on one CD...

Hackett is a prog rocker, going right back to the glory years of Genesis in the 70's, paticularly the 1970-1977 period were the band produced a powerful array of music. Since then Steve has become a musician striving to explore ALL sides of music, like former Genesis band mate Peter Gabriel, he will try any type of sound. He has released a number of albums, including 'Please Don't Touch' (1978), 'Spectral Mornings' (1979) and 'Guitar Noir' (1992) that are considered classics.

And so this album 'To Watch The Storms', Hackett's first effort since 1999's anticipated 'Darktown' album. Here Hackett shifts gears effortlessly. The album has a tremendous mood throughout, and Hackett has a guitar sound that is truely distictive. From the calmness and nostalgia of the opening track 'Strutton Ground' to the prog throwback 'Circus Of Becoming', this is a perfectly crafted work.

Hackett has also become a very good lyricist, with some thought provoking words to go with his musical soudscapes. And he is a good singer, half prog, half blues croke is how to describe it best.

Other highlights include the uplifting 'Brand New', the unbelievably heavy political protest song 'Mechanical Bride', which Hackett almost scares you with its insanely wild instrumental passage. The gentle, elegant 'Rebecca', with it's classical acoustic guitars is a nice contrast, as is the powerful love song 'This World', with it's moving chorus.

'The Devil Is An Englishman' and 'Marijuana Assasian Of Youth' are both completely insane rock riots, with Hackett malevolently sinister on the former, and playing the Batman theme on his guitar on the later...

And to round off, as always their is a set of stirring instrumental pieces, from nylon guitar songs like 'Wind, Sand And Stars', 'If Only You Knew' and 'The Moon Under Water' to world music epic 'The Silk Road' and the atmospheric 'Pollution B'.

Oh and there is just time for some full on blues with 'Fire Island' and some Irish folk with 'Come Away' and surrealist jazz with the muted and moody 'Frozen Statues'.

This special edition version of 'To Watch The Storms' ios beautifully packaged, with great artwork by Hackett's girlfriend/artist Kim Poor, and sleve notes by the man himself for every track. If you want diversity, complexity and beauty, this is the album for you, i HIGHLY recommend this album.

4 out of 5 stars Close but no cigar ..........2005-04-29

It's no "Darktown" but it's good .....

I'd recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Hackett's Best Work, but..........2004-06-28

Let's face it; all of us reading and writing these reviews of Steve's music are his fans. We're seeing more grey each day, we are at or rapidly approaching the big 5-0, and like the rest of the world, we are not who we were. Neither is Steve. His composition continues to expand as it matures, he still can pull off phrases, trills, licks, riffs and tricks that surprise. He is still the finest guitarist ever recorded. Yet even that--the core of what draws us all to his music, his playing--is starting to sound...similar. Time really does march on, and it did--on all of us. Even so, this album is simply remarkable. I know lots of us complained that "Darktown"'s protracted birth resulted in a fractured sound, yet for most it was a return to form. With "To Watch The Storms," that form is reshaped, redefined and recast into something even more solid. This is the best work Steve has ever produced. And like anyone who would actually read this, I've been there for all of it. But there's the problem. He's already got us. I doubt Steve's audience is growing. My guess it will continue to be us and only us throughout his career. Hopefully, that suits him. Yet it does mean he may never grace our shores again. Our "youthful" American promoters may never envision profits in offering U.S. gigs to this profound artist. So our long, hopeful dream of a full-fledged tour over here gets more fanciful with each new candle on the cake. At least while we continue to dream we can listen to this great album.

3 out of 5 stars Don't Judge the CD by the Cover.......2004-06-23

I've been a long time prog rock fan, since it's beginning, and Genesis was, and still is my all time favorite. I search the internet constantly in the hope of finding music which will not necessarily "bring me back", but preferably take me forward. Steve Hackett has continued to amaze me with a great deal of his solo work, but, and here comes the big "but", TO WATCH THE STORMS, was a huge disappointment. So many of the tracks on this venture are just too experimentally blasé, very introspective, and do not deliver the kind of sonic upheavals that I count on Steve to give me, as he is only one of the few musicians who can still make me say "wow". There's very little wow on this cd, though die hard fans who insist that sounding the same is better than breaking new ground will probably disagree. The cd packaging is exceptional, the only real "wow" this collection of contemplative ballads has to offer. But, with Steve, I will never give up that he will produce another compilation that will take my breath away.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music!!.......2006-01-19

Brandi Wells had a unique voice in itself. She was with a group called "Slick" and had a single called "sunrise" then she branch out on her own. Watch Out was in my opinion a great masterpiece in itself. It's a shame that her career didn't spand any further. I'm from Philly and we still play her music pretty often. Unfortunatly she passed away 2 years ago dued to breast cancer, but her music still lives on. Get her CD and enjoy

3 out of 5 stars Several Great Tracks but Remastered Sound quality is poor!.......2005-12-08

The title track and Fantasy are great tracks, but sadly, they have used a noise reduction system that has altered how the music sounds. Only the title track sounds like it should. The rest of the tracks are flat and the sound has been altered due to the noise reduction. Shame that a professional system wasn't used which would never alter the original source sound. My vinyl shouldn't sound sharper than this CD, but it outshines it by a mile!!!!

5 out of 5 stars By Far One of the Best.......2000-11-28

Brandi Wells aka Peaches from my very own home town of Chester, Pa is a very remarkable vocalist who will have you toe curling, eyes shut tight and thinking thoughts shared only for that special someone....honestly by far a must have in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars sweet and romantic.......1999-09-13

This is a must have for those quiet nights at home with your most significant other or to slow down the pace at the next dance. It's good, wholesome, love tunes at its best. Completely satisfied with the results of this purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Misako & company blow wild and free.......2003-10-15

This album opens with a baby's wail, and the sound of a squeeze toy echoed by Thom Chapin's wailing alto. Misako joins in on piano, leading Chapin into a delicate yet warped version of a lullaby, which seems to end after a few minutes, but instead transitions into a driving post-bop jam that lives up to the title, "Cat Scramble". Thom Chapin gets a long solo, followed by Misako, who throws a lot of powerful chord pounding into her solo as well as fast runs. This slim little Japanese gal is no shrinking violet behind the keys. Though Misako composed most of these tunes, Chapin is the most prominent voice throughout, making this album a showcase of his talents as well. The second track, "Zeugma" is another lengthy jam, which finds Misako supporting Chapin's solo effectively with sympathetic comping. She gently nudges the harmonic boundaries in the directions she wants him to explore, then takes off into free space of her own with her solo, running wild before dwelling on hypnotic patterns. Attentive drummer Matt Wilson is a strong asset throughout, and Kiyoto Fujiwara is also solid in support. The album closes with a solo piece by Misako, which again shows that she can float like a hummingbird but sting like a dragonfly when she wants to. After all, she warned you to "Watch Out!"

        5 out of 5 stars Sweet Dreams.......2005-11-23

This type of album would not be released today. All of the arrangements are impeccably done...I have read many a book at night with this playing in the background. It's a shame that Morton Gould gets lumped into the "elevator music" category by today's so called music critics that can't reference anything before 1980 that wasn't spoon fed to them by Rolling Stone or MTV. It's worth it for the Living Stereo recording alone!

        5 out of 5 stars Beautiful nocturne.......2005-06-28

Wow, I'm glad I bought this when I did! Evidently it's gone out of print again... Kudos to RCA for releasing it on CD in the first place. I bought the vinyl years ago, and spent many a pleasant evening fading into dreamland listening to Mr. Gould's orchestra working through "All Through the Night" etc... Even if it weren't for the beautiful music within, this one would be worth it for the artwork on the front and back covers alone. A beautiful effort from one of America's great 20th century composers and conductors, Richmond Hill's own Morton Gould
