Although it's based on the 1967 movie of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie is almost thoroughly new. Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune--and recycling even older material (look for Victor Herbert's "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and the inventively arranged "Nuttycracker Suite"). Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, and Tesori does a great job cranking out swinging melodies. Sutton Foster is appropriately brassy as Millie, but she can also tone it down, as in the beginning of "Gimme Gimme" (of course, she then proceeds to project up to the last rafters as the song builds to its climax). Harriet Harris, as nasty Mrs. Meers, steals the show with "They Don't Know." Close your eyes, listen to her, and you'll be back in Broadway's golden age. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Musical, But Product Quality - Eh.......2007-07-15
I absolutely love the musical so I'm thrilled with the cd.
My problem was not with the quality of the cd, but with the plastic case. The cd cases always come cracked. Although it doesn't affect the quality of the cd itself, it's rather disheartening that Amazon charges customers for its poor shipping.
MODERNIZE your music collection!!!.......2007-07-13
This is an AMAZING musical and great album. It is sure to jazz-up any music collection! BUY THIS ALBUM NOW!
A must to add to your collection.......2007-05-18
I was very fortunate enough to see this on Broadway. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen! The music has just enough jazz and contemporary vive that any musical lover would enjoy! It's also got tapping in it! Sutton is simply awesome in this role and all of the cast can really belt out their songs. Harriet Harris is phenominal in her role as Mrs. Meers. I highly recommend this to all broadway lovers! It's one to add to your collection!
Delightful.......2006-06-12
The music takes a little bit to grow on you, but boy, does it! It's wonderful, charming, romantic, funny--just like the play itself. I loved almost every song and I was really impressed with "Long As I'm Here With You"-- I thought it was an old song written back in the twenties, because it so sounded like one. The cast is absolutely energetic and endearing, and Sutton Foster just *rocks*. Definitely worth the money.
YOU WILL LOVE IT.......2006-02-17
If you like musicals, you will NOT REGRET purchasing this musical soundtrack. JUST DO IT. It's so great, you will be listening to it forever. I also saw the show at the Kennedy Center in D.C. and it's one of the best I've ever seen. (And I've seen A LOT.)
Have Fun!

Album Description
Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.
Customer Reviews:
Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12
This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

EXCEPTIONALLY BREATHTAKING.......2000-05-11
Looking for a love ballad to relax to, "They Don't Know" would be most perfect! These lyrics send a chill down my spine, and continues to entice my thoughts thereafter. Jon B. is one of the most talented individuals yet, as I anticipate the need to be swept off my feet once again as Jon's beautiful voice and style has done.
Off Da Hook.......2000-01-14

Customer Reviews:
A Class Act - Truly A Soulful Systa'.......2007-01-10
I heard this Cd again while surfing the net looking for new artists. Instantly I was pleased with what I heard. Everything is so well put together (the arrangements, lyrics, and then her voice tops it off by soothing the soul). She is in the elite class. I hope this Systa' goes places, and gets the recognition that she is due!
No more interludes!.......2003-01-12
I really like Angela Johnson's voice and her songs are great. I think I would have rated this cd between 4 and 5 stars (5 for her voice and 4 for the songs), but I only rated it 3 stars because of the annoying interludes that she places at the end of many of her songs. If these were done on separate tracks so you program them out, this would be fine - but it doesn't make me want to hear the cd over and over again.
You'll either love it or hate it.......2002-06-20
If you're reading this review, you must be a real soul music connoisseur. Angela Johnson is virtually unknown here in the US. She is the singer of the band Cooly's Hotbox (also unknown in the US unless you're into very underground urban music). Their song "Make Me Happy" is one of my all time favorites.
Angela is a very talented singer with a nice voice, and objectively speaking this is a good album. However, the songs were a little too earthy/organic/bluesy for my taste, with that whole neo-classic soul vibe going on (which I hate!). There are no songs that can match "Make Me Happy" here. Anyway, you will probably love this album if you enjoy listening to artists like Jill Scott, Angie Stone, Lauryn Hill, India Arie, Maxwell and all the other neo-classic soul stuff (personally I really do not like that style!). On the other hand, you will probably be very disappointed if you're like me and expect something more along the lines of Mary J., Faith Evans, SWV, Aaliyah, etc.

Album Description
2001 debut album for UK act glibly tagged the Wu Tang of garage. A hard, rough mixture of garage, drum & bass & hip-hop with deep, dark beats for the in-your-face lyrics of their small army of MCs (the group has 30 members). Highlights include their number one hit, '21 Seconds', 'Oh No' (Remix) & 'Woah'. 20 tracks from one of the UK's most ambitious young urban groups.
Customer Reviews:
What a joke!.......2004-06-20
This band is a total joke! There are about 30 people who think they are 'solid' that sing about a load of rubbish. Their music is repetitive, predictable pop/rap/garage... whatever crap genre you want to call it. These are the kinda people (bands) who are just wrecking music history in general. Buy it if you want a good laugh.
I don't get it........2003-05-06
I didn't see any bad reviews by Americans on this CD. However, as an American I can say that this CD has a lot of appeal. I'm actually a West-Indian-American so there's something about the the Caribbean tinge to some of the tunes that appealed to me. Their slang is similar to that of American Hip-Hop, yet placed in their own wicked stylee. 'Nuff props to the So Solid Crew. Big up to the GT posse reppin' in the UK...big up to my cousins dem, I hope to see and meet y'all at the Notting Hill Carnival this year. "Buyackasha!" as Ali G would say.
I got 21 seconds to write a review........2003-04-15
Actually, there's no way that 21 seconds would be enough time to describe how talented these guys are. The Crew is definately number one as far as all UK Garage / 2 Step artists go. Songs like Ride Wid Us, 21 Seconds, They Don't Know, and Haters blaze with fury... This group will take any Rap lover, and even some Rap haters like me, absolutely by STORM~! Buy this album. Trust me.
NEVER dis the Crew.......2003-01-03
i dont see how all u americans can dis so solid crew. y buy the album if u aint into garage music which isntlikely if u is american coz it is UK garage. so solid r the best group in da world so never dis em coz they rule!!!!!!!!!!!
this is horrible.......2002-12-04
Woke up one morning, brushed my teeth, had a shower, and off i went to town, picked up the new so solid crew cd, merrily went off home to go and listen to it. Got home fed the budgie went upstairs and put the cd in the cd player.
I was shocked, I was flabbergasted, the cd player wasnt working. After a couple of minutes i realised it wasnt plugged into the mains. Anyway off i went listenin to the cd.
It started off with a song called haters. By the time this song ended i had gone from liking this group of wanabee gangstas to hating them myself. Terrible song.
Then there was "oh no". Yep thats exactly what i was sayin wen i heard the remix to it. OH NO WHAT THE [HECK] IS THIS ***!!!
Then the 21 seconds song. Now picture this i have been tortured for 35 minutes so far by listenin to this cd. Then im given this song. ive tried being patient and ive tried being reasonable but this song made me lose it.
This cd should be used for boxers at the start of their fights cos it would really get them wound up or maybe instead of the electric chair put the criminal in a room wid this cd playing.
worst album ever

I saw this young Lady live and as she sat at the piano and belted out her songs it reminded me of when Aretha would sit at the piano and do the same. Angela vocals are amazing without over singing. Gospel, the blues, jazz, real soul music is alive and well in this woman.
Criminally unknown Artist creates a brilliant Debut.......2003-05-29
The world of music today is a very sad one. Those with a thing called TALENT are so often ignored in a world where popularity stakes and the bottom line are what is most important to a major record label and thus the public at large.
Angela Johnson's debut album, along with recent releases by Peven Everett and the slightly more popular Donnie show that some of the best music today is happening not on the pop charts, but in a more talented underground scene.
Angela is a highly talented singer, songwriter and musician remeniscent in skill to Babyface in writing love songs with a story while her sound is like a female Musiq mixed with Alicia Keys and the new funky Babyface. The album's best tracks are those that let her show her writing skills such as "Sad Days", "Call" and "I Still Care".
This is probably one of the best Soul albums I have purchased in recent months and it is a shame that so many people are missing out on her talent. What makes it so much worse is that she actually does have the talent, songwriting abilities and good looks to make it big, but in the world we live in today, a talent like hers is not always appreciated. All I can say it that I feel like someone who has stumbled upon a rare gem and I am glad to own this album.
