I would recommend this CD to anyone that really likes Tine Turner music! Great!
Proud Mary:The Best of Ike & Tina Turner.......2007-04-10
Thie album has a lot of my favorite songs by Ike & Tina which I heard when they first came out. If you like the original versions of oldies this is a good one.
The Ike & Tina Turner Review, 1960-1975.......2007-02-02
Finding a good Ike & Tina compilation is no easy task. Not only did they record for multiple record labels, there are a plethora of low-budget and low-quality compilations available. This is one of the decent ones.
PROUD MARY: THE BEST OF IKE & TINA TURNER (from the "Legends of Rock n' Roll Series") consists of 23 songs recorded 1960-1975, in chronological order. Also included are two uncredited ("bonus") tracks; they are two commercials/radio ads for Ike & Tina. Disc packaged in black jewel case; total running time: 73:07. Booklet (in the form of a 6-pannel map-style fold-out sheet) includes a substantial small-font essay by Al Quaaglieri, one b&w photo of Ike & Tina, a photo of an assortment of original Ike & Tina album covers, and track information (including release dates and chart positions). Sound quality ranges from poor (on earlier recordings) to good; volume is low on all tracks.
This compilation seems to cover, with the exception of their Blue Thumb recordings, most of their career. Ike & Tina's labels included Sue, Modern/Kent, Warner Bros./Loma, Minit, Atlantic/Pompeii, Liberty, and United Artists. I do wish it included "Shake a Tail Feather".
The vocals of this Tina Turner are closer to that of LaVern Baker, Etta James, Lyn Collins, or Janis Joplin than to the pop/rock singer she would later become. She shouts and screams, often singing in a strained, almost forced-sounding, voice.
Notes: The version of "River Deep, Mountain High" is not the Phil Spector version; the version included is from the "Nutbush City Limits" LP. The voice heard on "It's Gonna Work Out Fine" and addressed as "Ikey" is not Ike Turner; it is Mickey of studio team Mickey & Sylvia. Ike's voice is heard on "Baby-Get It On", where he sings co-lead vocals. It is also interesting that the essayist mentions several times that the Ike & Tina story "would make a great movie" - this was a couple years before the 1993 bio-pic "What's Love Got to Do With It" was released.
What a mess.......2007-01-25
First the sound quality is poor - I had my stereo turned almost up to max and it was just loud enuf to hear.
Then there are the uncredited/unlisted "bonus tracks" - they are comercials/radio ads for Ike & Tina.
The version of "River Deep, Mountain High" is not the Phil Spector version.
Outstanding.......2005-08-26
This is a really good album. Anybody that hasn't heard this should listen to it.

Ethel Deserved Better Than This.......2001-06-22
There may indeed be no business like show business. RCA was a major backer of this musical, and fully expected to record the original cast album. Decca, Merman's recording label, wouldn't allow her to appear. The solution the two compnaies decided on was an original cast album on RCA featuring Dinah Shore doing Merman's numbers, and this mediocre studio album.
Decca was never a winner when it came to modern recording techniques. Merman's voice has no echo or reverb to enhance her performance. The arrangements are by Gordon Jenkins, which fit Ethel's style like it was a dress bought in a bargain basement. It is a shame that in the later years of her life, Ethel didn't choose to revisit this score and re-record it, as she did with Annie Get Your Gun twice.
The selections from Panama Hattie are a nice rarity, but they are taken from scratchy shellac originals. There are several compilations that include these numbers with no annoying extraneous noise.

Tina Is The One Who Rocks!.......2005-06-25
Even though Ike did get Tina into show biz, he should'nt get any credit for how happy Tina is today. So think about how much better her life is before you say that Ike is responsible for where she is today. Because he wasn't the only one. And FYI. Tina never humiliated Ike. Ike was the one who humiliated Tina. Wouldn't you feel humiliated if you were getting slapped all up and down the place by someone who you loved like a brother. I wouldn't feel humiliated if someone took me to public court for beating the holy s@#t out of them. I would feel like a sorry excuse for a man, and a flat out d@#n shame!
Not the originals!.......2003-11-24
These are slick, gutless remakes. Don't bother.
Good&some Misses.......2001-09-20
Ike&Tina Turner had Some Solid Chemistry together but some of the Covers were Suspect.still when they Hit they hit it Right!Tina's Vocals went really well with Ike's Music&Arrangements.this set showcases The Many Sides of this Duo.
IKE RAWKS!!!!!.......1999-10-22
He made Tina what she it today. This guy precluded Al Green, Marvin Gaye and Hendrix and does not get the credit he deserves because Tina humiliated him publicly without ever getting the chance to hear his side of the story. The man's music speaks for itself. Ike baby Ike !!!!
Ike Rules.......1999-09-10
A very good sampling of a very under-appreciated artist, Da' Man Ike Turner.

The Best Tina CD Ever!.......2007-07-14
This album is amazing! It is by far the best album that Tina & Ike Turner ever made! You should buy it if you can get a copy of it!
Great Classic Tina.......2007-03-12
Bought this for my wife as she has been a Tina fan from the beginning. Sound quality is good and crisp. My wife was very happy. Although she said they could have left out the photos of Ike.
Tina Turner Sings the Blues (for about 50 minutes).......2007-02-02
In 1969, after "A Fool in Love" and "It's Gonna Work Out Fine" and before "Proud Mary" and "Nutbush City Limits", Ike & Tina recorded two albums for the Blue Thumb label. The songs on this compilation are taken from those recordings.
BOLD SOUL SISTER consists of 16 songs recorded in 1969 in non-chronological order. Disc packaged in black jewel case; total running time: 50:10. Booklet includes a poorly written short essay by Amy Linden, a series b&w shots of Ike & Tina from a photo session, and songwriter credits; albums of origin, chart positions, musician personnel, and recording dates are not included. Sound quality is good.
What is most disappointing about this compilation is its brevity. It seems that at well under an hour of music, the CD could have included the remaining tracks from "Outta Season" and "The Hunter" not included here; it is very common for two LPs to be re-issued on a single disc. (In fact, those 2 LPs were released on a single disc in 2004.)
The 16 tracks included are some great Blues recordings by Tina Turner, seemingly with minimal instrumentation, sans the Ikettes and Kings of Rhythm. Songs include "Rock Me Baby", "Dust My Broom", and Otis Redding's "I've Been Loving You Too Long".
The music is good, but with a little effort this COULD have been a GREAT compilation.

Doesn't get better than Tina!.......2005-01-12
The song Bold Soul Sister popped up on my iPod today. Toward the end of it I realized," Holy Smokes, that's Albert Collins playing solo guitar fills". He's unmistakable. Even though he's not credited on the CD it makes sense because I believe Albert put something out on Blue Thumb too. True story: when I was a young lad (14 maybe) I helped move equipment for an Ike and Tina show. I sat right by the side of stage. This would have been about 1970. At one point during the show somebody handed me Ike's Strat....I couldn't resist strumming a chord or two on it. He had the action set low!
On a side note, in the new Wayne Shorter bio there is a crazy story about him walking into his house to find Tina, the greatest rock singer ever, scrubbing his floors. Read the book for the details.
PS Check out the non-Phil Spector River Deep, Mountain High on the EMI Best of Ike and Tina Turner..stunning vocal track!!
Not Bad.......2002-10-26
Or should I say - the music is "BaD" - I really dig this CD - sounds to me like Led Zepplin took a few hints from Ike....

The '93 movie What's Love Got to Do with It? may have convinced the majority of squares out there that Ike Turner was nothing more than a wife-abuser. But what they don't (and never will) care to know is that Ike Turner is one of the most important figures in the history of rock & roll, a veritable rhythm & blues wunderkind whose prowess as songwriter, arranger, pianist, guitarist, and showman helped created many of early rock & roll's groundbreaking songs. The 18 tracks contained here justify these claims and more, selecting the very best from Ike's '50s work and many later cuts recorded without what's-her-name. Arguably the first rock & roll record, the immortal "Rocket 88" is here along with great Kings of Rhythm tracks like "Matchbox" and "Down & Out." But what simply must be heard is Ike's searing guitar attack and quivering tremolo on gems like "Ho Ho" and "Prancing." One listen and you'll be proclaiming "I Like Ike" too. --Ken Hohman
Customer Reviews:
Ike's True Legacy.......2004-04-19
Ike Turner is probably doomed to be eternally remembered as the wife- beating drug abuser in the classic movie "What's Love Got to do With It?". Part of this reason is that Laurence Fishburne was so damn good that he made the role unforgettable. But Ike's true legacy should be the classic rock and r&b he made with and without Tina. This album spotlights Ike's various musical adventures starting with the #1 r&b hit "Rocket 88", widely regarded as the first rock n' roll record eve made. The song was so popular it spawned a sequel, also included here-"My Real Gone Rocket", both sang by the long forgotten Jackie Brenston. Another classic is the swamp blues of "Hoo-Doo Say", sang by The Sly Fox, aka Eugene Fox. This song would have been perfect for Screamin' Jay Hawkins. There are some classic blues tracks like "Down and Out" and "You're Still My Baby" and Ike's personal anthem {also the title of his autobiography) "Takin' Back My Name". There are also some red hot instrumental grooves like "The New Breed PT. 2" and "Prancing" which showcase Ike's ace guitar playing and shows why his band were called The Kings Of Rythym. This compilation was released by Rhino Records, so you know it's a first rate show from beginning to end with the usual photos and informative liner notes in a 12 page booklet. Throughout, Ike is spotlighted in his glory as a pianist/vocalist/guitarist/bandleader/producer/songwriter! Ike is currently clean and sober and was just nominated for a Grammy recently for his "Here and Now" album. If you are a fan of classic early rock and r&b, then this is an essential edition to you're collection.
