Thirty or so of Stevie Wonder's biggest hits--many of them enduring classics--make up this double disc. That's the good news. The bad news is that they're sequenced here about as well (or maybe not) as your CD player's "random" function might do it. Leading off with "Part-Time Lover"--a major chart record, no doubt, but hardly the rouser you'd expect for an opener--is puzzling enough. It's when the programming starts veering from highlights of his self-produced period ("Sir Duke") to Motown assembly-line pieces ("My Cherie Amour") that the head-scratching really begins. And don't try to count the great moments that are missing. This will do in a pinch, but if you own no Stevie, be advised that better overviews of Wonder's career (the finest by far being the four-CD box At the Close of a Century) are available. --Rickey Wright

Musical genius.......2007-05-26

I often wonder what it must be like to be a musical genius, and whenever I listen to Stevie Wonder I find the answer. When I was a little girl I wanted to be a singer (despite being tone deaf), so I appreciate anyone that has true musical ability. Not only does Stevie have a great voice, he can play practically every instrument invented. One of the words that comes to mind when listening to him is "awesome". That's all you can really say about him. His music is timeless. From "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" to "Do I Do" and "That Girl" (my favorites) he just shines and shines. This is real music by a real artist. No matter how many times I listen to this CD, I'll never tire of it. Excellent.

I was a baby and a little girl when most of these songs were released but I grew up with admiration and respect for his music. Throug out my life there was always a popular Stevie song out but I never paid much attention. Listening to this collection brought back so many wonderful times and allowed me to realize the exact kind of genius Mr. Wonder is.

I blast these cds at work everyday. I'm really not supposed to and I try to keep the level at an enjoyable tone but it's pretty hard, plus there's been quite a few people that stop by and tell me to turn it up. His songs are feel good all the way through.

There are better compilations, but this one is a good start!.......2006-10-26

Fifty years and going strong.......2007-04-13

Hard to believe, but 2007 marks 50 years since The Crests first charted with "Sweetest One", which should have been included on this CD, along with "My Juanita". It's still a great CD, with the amazing voice of Johnny Maestro singing lead, and superb backing vocals from J. T. Carter, Tommy Gough and Hal Torres. If you google "Johnny Maestro", the first listing should be for his official website, and e-mail can be sent to the guys there.

Nothing's ever topped the golden age of soul for party music, and this four-CD set offers the distilled essence of the good times from those difficult years. Where Rhino's Beg, Scream & Shout! and Can You Dig It? compilations are thoughtful, wide-reaching surveys of the range of soul music in the '60s and '70s, respectively, Soul Spectacular! has exactly one thing on its track listing: mammoth crossover hits that add up to one blockbuster of a party. Of its 90 tracks (all presented in their original single versions), 47 were No. 1 and 15 topped the Pop and R&B charts. As such, the poles the set revolves around are Detroit (the Apollonian glories of Motown and Hot Wax: refined, orchestrated, and quality controlled) and Memphis (the Dionysian thrills of Stax, Volt, and the scene around them: raw jams that sounded like they'd been caught on tape by happy accident), but every other place in the country that was capable of turning out a national smash is represented, too. The '60s, for these purposes, extend back to definitive 1959 hits by Ray Charles and Barrett Strong; the '70s of soul peter out sometime around 1974, with a final appearance courtesy of the Manhattans' aptly named "Kiss and Say Goodbye," from 1976. By then, the vocal intensity of soul was taking a back seat to the new and slicker beats of funk and disco. But Soul Spectacular! is also a tribute to an era of independence and innovation, the years when tiny labels (their names like found poetry: Nola, Arctic, Par-Lo, Ovide, Bamboo) could make the whole country dance for a few weeks, if only because they found a groove nobody had discovered before. --Douglas Wolk

No Sam or Stevie?.......2006-03-02

I ain't dropping stars for this one because it is absolutely brilliant as far as I am concerned. Love every track from head to toe BUT not only is there no Sam Cooke but there's no Stevie Wonder either. So maybe the title should have been 'The Greatest Soul Hits of all Time without arguably the 2 MOST influential Soul artists of all Time' certainly 2 of the top 5 eh? Aretha, Ray and Otis are here. Anyway back to the set and it is a fantastic list of brilliant, well known and some hidden, gems! Production is good - sounds like the originals to me! 'Cept they don't have that little crackle that my record player used to create! If you wanna buy this and are just checking the reviews to tip the scales - I say DO IT! You WILL love it, but you might just wanna get a Sam & Stevie best of set to go with it.

Rhino 4CD Soul Box Familiar , "Spectacular" Starter Set.......2004-12-23

If Rhino's 4CD "Soul Spectacular" had been released in the mid-1980s it may have stood with Clapton's "Crossroads" and Bob Dylan's "Biograph" as among pop's essential box sets. Success of films like "Dirty Dancing" and "The Big Chill" returned many of these songs to public awareness as baby boomers recognized them as part of the idealized soundtrack of their lives. As Ben Edmonds says in the liner notes, "This music isn't simply of its time; it embodied it." This was a far cry from music critic Dave Marsh once wondering in the mid-1970s if Wilson Pickett and other soul giants would one day be available only on bootlegs.

But the more than 20 years since have seen these songs anthologized countless times on soundtracks,hits and anthology collections (yours truly once owned every one of these songs in one recorded format or another) and played daily on oldies radio. (Barbara Mason's grand 1965 original, "Yes I'm Ready," far from the biggest hit here, has aired more than one million times.)

This collection's best and worst point is its familiarity. Even casual pop music fans know the signature songs of the Temptations, Mary Wells, Percy Sledge, Ben E. King and others here. No choice is a glaring misstep but some are questionable: why "I Count the Tears" from the Drifters instead of 1964's more popular "Under the Boardwalk" or 1959's more influential "There Goes My Baby?" Why James Brown's now-cliched "I Got You (I Feel Good)" over "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," one of music's most aggressive, important singles? Let alone essential performers (Sam Cooke? The Dells? Jerry Butler?) left out altogether. Motown, pop culture's most active recycling plant, whips through 1962-3 songs from the Miracles, Vandellas and Supremes; only three Motown hits are heard across discs 2-3.

Those two middle discs are the set's best as they zip through a variety of styles: Muscle Shoals soul (Sledge, Brook Benton) Philadelphia (Fantastic Johnny C, Intruders, Delfonics), Chicago (Barbara Acklin, Billy Stewart) and, of course, Memphis and Detroit giants. Each artist is represented by one song except Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding, featured on solo and duet track each. The liner notes tell little more than oft-told tales of Stax and Motown's records respective founding.

"Soul Spectacular" is just that; 90 clear-sounding classics worth playing at any party or road trip without a dud in the bunch (at least until deep into disc four with one too many smooth Philadelphia International ballads in a row.) It's a first-class soul starter set, with greatest hits sets from any major individual artist listed an essential buy.

Bravo for this album. Every song on every disc bought back memories. I can't find one thing bad about this album. Sound qualiy is great. A must have for any motown fan.

I really enjoyed this album - all the great old motown songs that we sung along with and danced to are here. May I suggest that you take a bit more care with the track listing. 2 out of 60 correct is an abysmal bit of work.

Stevie Wonder grew up fast, as Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 makes plain. Collecting both Motown assembly-line gems ("My Cherie Amour") and the first flashes of his self-contained '70s funk-rock style ("Signed Sealed Delivered I'm Yours," a terrific cover of the Beatles' "We Can Work It Out"), this 20-bit remaster disc is a must-own, particularly for Original Musiquarium fans looking for insight into Wonder's artistic growth. It's far from mere research material, though; the cream of this genius's early work is some of Motown's best. --Rickey Wright

Classic Stevie Wonder.......2007-06-03

If you like early Stevie Wonder, this is a great addition to your collection. Steveland Morris (his real name)simply improved year after year until the point of "Songs in the Key of Life", but this collection of his early songs includes classics that are a necessary part of any collection of the best of R&B, soul, or however you'd like to categorize his music.

the period from 1967-1971 was stevie wonder's final period of musical growth from the motown hit machine.on this greatest hits collection(volume 2),it has material from his late 1960s and early 1970s period extracted from the albums:"for once in my life"(1968)"my cherie amour"(1969)/"signed,sealed,&delivered"(1970)and his final motown breakaway album the personal,social-political album his first full length album statement"where i'm coming from"(1971).
the songs on this second collection of his greatest hits are not in chronological order,but it provides a great reflection of his growth as a prolific songwriter from this four year period.the only song on this collection that is not available on his regular motown albums is 'travelin'man'(1967)which is another classic wonder recording.for some strange reason, it was omitted (along with other more original superior songs that were held in the vaults from this same 1967 period) by motown from being included on his 1967 album "i was made to love her"what a terrible mistake of omission by motown!and it(along with the other more superior songs)were replaced with filler remakes of other songs! it was written by ron mi Plantes de balcon et jardinières

rial presented on this collection-when he gets subtle, it isn't as effective. My personal favorites are "Bernadette," "Reach Out I'll Be There" and "Ask The Lonely." (which should have been a bigger hit than it was) "Ask The Lonely" is a masterpiece that to my ears doesn't get the credit it deserves. This is the collection that got them into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame.

An excellent sampling of the Four Tops in their prime........1999-06-10

While this album covers only the first three years of the Four Tops' initial eight-year run as Motown stars, it serves a valuable purpose: It provides an aural "snapshot" of the group at the peak of its hit-making powers. The legendary songwriting/production team of Holland-Dozier-Holland (also responsible for the vast bulk of the Supremes' most enduring hits) created 10 of the songs, including the powerful numbers that made the Four Tops' sound perhaps pop/soul music's closest link to grand opera. Propelled by Levi Stubbs' heart-wrenching lead vocals and the Greek chorus-like harmonies of Renaldo Benson, Abdul Fakir and the late Lawrence Payton (occasionally augmented by backup chorale), the group alternately verges on a nervous breakdown ("Shake Me, Wake Me (When It's Over)," "7 Rooms of Gloom"), uplifts the spirit ("Reach Out I'll Be There") and stirs the soul ("Bernadette," one of the all-time-great songs about a man's love for a woman, e.g., "In you I have/what other men long for/All men need someone/to worship and adore/That's why I treasure you/and place you high above/For the only joy in life/is to be loved"). The non-H-D-H songs are also fine, particularly "Just Ask The Lonely," a melancholy reflection on the elusiveness of everlasting love: "Just ask the lonely/and they'll tell you the pain/of losing a love/you will never regain." All is topped off by sing-along classics "Baby I Need Your Loving," "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)" and "It's The Same Old Song." While the Tops never achieved the teenybopper popularity of the Temptations and Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, they proved on this first collection of greatest hits that they held the Motown monopoly on mature, heartfelt passion.

Don't waste your money on this album! For a dollar more, purchase their collection of hits in "The Ultimate Collection" by the Four Tops. The latter has all the songs of this one, plus many more. I discovered this after purchasing this one.

RARE EARTH-GREATEST HITS AND RARE CLASSICS: Rare Earth was something of an oddity at Motown: an all white, self contained rock act that played with unadulterated soul. Starting with a gritty revamping of the Temptations' Smokey Robinson-sired classic GET READY and following up with a similarly reworked (I KNOW) I'M LOSING YOU (another Tempts hit), they were powered by the mighty vocal explosions of sticksman Peter Riviera and Gil Bridges' tasty woodwind accents. Worthy follow-ups included life-affirming anthem I JUST WANT TO CELEBRATE, HEY BIG BROTHER's hypnotic pulse, and the against type (and Bee Gees assisted) disco charter WARM RIDE, but even the non hits ("Rare Classics") deserve a spin. BIG JOHN IS MY NAME is a funky, chunky slab of fuzz tone/wah wah-injected psychedelia, while HUM ALONG AND DANCE invites you to do just that. At twenty cuts, GREATEST HITS is perhaps too much of a groovy thing for the uninitiated, but better too much Rare Earth than too little, I always say. RATING: FOUR BIG BEATS

However, with only the single versions of the group's hits, the album falls short.

A better purchase is "The Millennium Collection: The Best of Rare Earth". That one has the full-length renditions, including the 20-minute plus "Get Ready", a funk fan's treasure.

This covers Rare Earth very good all the Top Pop 90 Charters are on this. To make the Top Pop 100 this would need 'What'd I Say'. Well worth it if you can get your hands on it. Sound is Excellent. One Other drawback these are the single issues. If you had this and The Best of Rare Earth The Millennium Collection this would be all you would need for Rare Earth.
