I have not had a chance to listen to the albums in this set. However, I apreciate the sole review offered (can't recall reviewer's ID), because I WAS posied to purchase this set prior to reading said (independent) description.

Back in the early '90s when I was a lad, the first funk and soul and salsoul compilations I came across were put out by such labels as 'Scotti Brothers', 'Ubiquity' (an homage to Roy Ayers' early stuff?), and of course, MC.

The MC products (rare groove, funk cuts, salsoul, disco, jazz-funk) were and still are a superior entre into these genres. The albums didn't just recycle popular tracks - I am not a dilettante, and yet 'Turn Off The Lights' by Larry Young's 'Fuel' band was new to my ears.

The sole reviewer has hit the mark in stating that MC has compromised its reputation with the relatively recent 'Breaks' release (Roy Ayers and a drum-machine? Seriously, MC?). But considering the quality of the releases in the '90s, it is, I suspect, hard to maintain such a standard.

After owning many of the Mastercuts vinyl compilations, I was excited to get this set. I was extremely upset to find that many of the most desirable songs on here such as "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" and "Running Away" by Roy Ayers, and "Always There" by Ronnie Laws are MUCH later versions. The Roy ayers cuts have 80's drum machines in them! Total crap. I mean, really bad versions. I already have these records, but I imagine one looking at this set would be excited to get those songs.

Who would want anything other than the originals?

Also, there is a cut "Aaron's Song" by Dan Moretti, that is nothing more than an awful smooth jazz ballad. Can somebody please explain to me how this got on a set of 'Breaks?'

Sure it's got 'It's A New Day' by Skull Snaps and a few others, but Mastercuts should be totally ashamed of these new 3 disc sets they have released. They have ruined the name and the series, by unloading crap they have the rights to and not being clear that many of the best titles are re-makes or live versions.

Whomever assembled these sets had absolutely NO idea what they were doing or what a real 'Break' record is.

Avoid these new mastercuts sets at all costs, they are untrue to
the series, and an effort to profit from poor titles.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic collection of old-skool breaks..........2002-05-23

There are quite a few of these breaks compilations out now, some quite obviously thrown together from tracks that have been sampled in a recent club tune or hip-hop track and suffering as a result from a lack of focus. This one is an exception - while most (if not all) of these tracks have been sampled to death, they still rock, they still sound fresh, and you can enjoy this disc again and again from front to back. Musicians can go to school on these prime examples of funk, and draw inspiration from the same place as all the old-skool block-rockers did - you might be unable to resist the urge to turn on the sampler and grab a few of these timeless breaks. Anyone who loves funky breaks, hip-hop, or the original organic funk that laid the foundation, you will appreciate the grooves on this CD. Highly recommended!

Though none of these tracks are very rare or unknown, every self-respecting funk afficianado and hip hop student should have them on the cd rack. The compilers included the tracks, from James Brown's "Funky Drummer" to Barry White's "I'm Gonna Love You A little Bit More Baby," based on how frequently they've been sampled by hip hop and R&B artists. The liner notes are meticulously-researched and yield up a gold mine of info about who sampled what. History aside, the bottom line is that evey one of these songs is a fistfull of funk pleasure, sure to get your booty and/or party moving.
