This Time Around
Editorial Reviews
Living Blues
This Time Around spotlights Clay's gospel-rooted vocals, framed by punchy horn charts for sass, a female backing group for soul, some strings for passion, and production values that support Clay's singing. Overall, though, blues fans with a limited appetite for contemporary black music may find this CD of soulful ballads a little too sugary for their taste.... Some additional lyrical and musical variety could have enhanced this album. Be that as it may, no one mines the soul/blues vein with more authenticity, talent, and commitment than Otis Clay.

It's tempting to go after Hanson with a full-on snark attack and deconstruct the new haircuts, snicker at the slightly rougher sound, and hoot at such impossibly tortured lyrics as "On the ground crying out, 'Somebody see me please.'" Trouble is, it's hard to trash them when the smile on your face has no trace of malice. That's the sort of smile these songs induce. The mildly spicy, funked-up "You Never Know" has a "Smooth" feel (only it's Jonny Lang, not Carlos Santana, supplying the licks). Hyper-happy harmonica (courtesy of Blues Traveler's John Popper) and thwacky-wacky effects on "If Only" turn yearning into a disease you'd stand in line to catch. "Save Me" is a sweet plea; the title track (and first single) has Southern-rock/gospel textures; "In the City," despite its adultery theme, is like Disneyland Manhattan--more fun than dangerous. Throughout, Taylor Hanson's vocals prove pretty expressive and throaty for an adolescent could-be male supermodel. Yes, teen girls will be penning pining letters to boyfriends at far-flung camps all summer to this stuff. But the Tulsa trio's real triumph is the way they bridge not just the generation gap, but the cynical chasm with clean, perfectly sappy pop. --Nina Malkin

Best of..... HANSON!.......2007-07-01
Definately a definitive CD by Hanson. A more grown up CD. Like making their mark on the music world. And my favorite is of course the title track "This Time Around".
If you love pop/rock and don't have this album...YOU'RE NUTS!.......2007-05-18
This is one of Hanson's best and strongest albums. Now sure, I've bought every other one of Hanson's albums but I do mean it, with every strand of me, when I say this is without a doubt one of my faves from them! The songs, each, have their own personality and charisma. I can't help but fall madly in love with If Only every time I hear it; a song like this just CRIES to be sung along to! And woah, what a sorrowfully sweet song it is! (If you couldn't tell, this is my #1 fave song!! lol) Runaway Run...gosh! Impeccable lyrics, a tune that draws you in, and instrumentation and performers that could only get better with age. Who can resist? Another one that I can't help but get caught up in is Sure About It. It is just but one of the songs on here that gets me vamped up and ready to tap my feet in rythm to it's irresistible beat. Rock driven and edgy at it's best, In The City gives off taunting and seductive vibes. Maybe even a bit of a "Hell, if I care!" flare! In a lugubrious mood? This Time Around has songs that are great for a listen when you're in a slump! I can't say enough good things about this album; I honestly have neither qualms regarding my decision to purchase it nor do I have any dislikes about any one song on it. Never has any one band brought me as much pleasure as Hanson! Love pop? Well, what are you waiting for? Put this in your player and get ready because Hanson delivers much more than just pop! The sound is closer to rock with this album. TEN STARS!!!
Their Best Album.......2006-05-15
This is by far Hanson's best album. It didn't get great sales, because of the music company that produced it, but it still has great quality despite its poor marketing. All of the songs...I'm serious, every-single-one will have you hooked. This is a great cd to play at a party or when you are alone. It's so versatile. Buy it.
Pure fun.......2006-04-07
This cd is exactly what it is; catchy fun. The songs just keep playing over and over in your head and they are an absolute delight. There is no hidden agenda, no deeper meaning to the lyrics. The instrumentation is infectious. I would like to emphasize certain songs but I will resist because all the songs are very worth your while. Just slide "This Time Around" into your cd player, let loose and let go!
This Album Proves That Hanson Are Talented Musicians..........2005-12-01
"This Time Around" is a perfect album...there's really no weak song on the entire disc. The best track on the album is, hands down, "Runaway Run"-it should have been the first single. "If Only" is great, as well, even if you are not a Hanson fan you will find this song entertaining. "Sure About It", "Wish That I Was There", "This Time Around", "Can't Stop", "Love Song"-these are just some of the tracks-and they are all great. Regardless of what people may say about Hanson, they truly are real musicians & excellent song writers and because of this they will still be around 25 yrs from now, while other "popular" acts today most likely won't.

Not impressed.......2003-11-25
I was not terribly impressed with this CD. Fortunately, I decided to get it from the library to see if it was good before deciding whether or not to buy it.
Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.
Inexorable wonder!.......2001-06-23
Where to start?! Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have had a track record for recording some of the most stupendous movie music ever. Magical Musicals is just another example of how audaciously bold, yet beautiful Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have taken the original scores, molded them into the same pieces, yet at the same time, creating life of their own in each and every note. If you are looking for ANY soundtrack containing Disney music, this should be the first CD you listen to. There are others out there, and yes, they may sound beautiful and enchanting, but you won't find such a unique and compelling score anywhere else other than this CD. Check it out!!

Paul does it again!.......2004-12-02
I don't know how he does it. Each CD is so great and filled with awesome songs, and This Time Around is no different. From the catchy guitar tune Leavin(featuring Keith Urban) to the heartful tearjerking ballads(like Home) to the blusy humorous I'd Be the King. This album is always in my stereo. This is one of those albums you could never get sick of. Once again Paul's managed to create a great album. Way to go!
Paul brandt won't slip under the radar much longer.......2004-07-30
Paul Brandt's CD's just keep getting better and better. He is an excellent singer who writes excellent material. There are definite standouts on this album, there's "leaving", "run to me" (excellent slow song), "I still do" (another excellent slow song). If you like country music then this is definitely an excellent album to pick up. As the title of this review states, Paul won't slip under the radar much longer as this cd will surely make his name more mainstream not only in canada, but in the US aswell.
Welcome back, Paul! A superb comeback effort........2004-06-30
Awesome new disc by one of Canada's best country performers, This Time Around really hits the high notes! From the lead remake, and superb version of "Convoy," to the last song "That's What I Love About Jesus," this is a tight, well put together disc.
"Convoy" really brings back the spirit of the original but with modern production, one can really make out what the CB parts were. Paul pulls off a superb version that ranks right alongside the original by C. W. McCall. "Leavin'" is just a good ole' plain hit! I can't get enough of listening to it and having Keith Urban guest on guitars (though I couldn't find it credited in the album notes) just adds to the tune. As an Albertan who moved away and came back, I really get "Alberta Bound;" this truly is God's country. From the ballad "Run to Me" to the bluesy, and comedic, "The King" and the standard "Rich Man," one just can't go wrong with this disc.
Way to go Paul! This definitely ranks as one of your best.
Paul Brandt ~ This Time Around.......2004-06-24
I am so excited for the release of Paul Brandt's latest studio album, This Time Around. Keith Urban's guitar work on the album has been oustanding and Paul's unique voice shines through the entire album from start to finish. Convoy was a great chice for Pual to do as it shows a new dimension to his voice style. I reccommend anyone and everyone to buy Paul's new album on June 29. This is a must have album!!!

alex.......2007-01-09
actually i didn't purchase this becuase it's only available in cassette. but this song is wonderful.
a truly under-rated album.......2002-09-11
This is likely the best Alex Bugnon album you've never heard of. Released in 1993, "This Time Around" is miles ahead of its conteporaries with its elegant production and excellent song choices.
There are few missteps within an this othewise flawless album. Bugnon's cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" is well-intended, but overproduced. Ditto with the remix of the opening track, "Klook Mop," found at the end of the CD as a bonus track. The rap bridge on "Klook's" remix tries too hard to be hip, and thus fails miserably.
There's plenty to love, however. "Sweet Sticky Thing" is more timeless than the original Ohio Players' version. "The Heart Song" is far less insipid than the title might suggest. Plus, the middle of the album holds some hidden, subtle gems in "Dasheen" and "The Way We Used To Be."
Whether you're new to Alex Bugnon's music or an old fan, "This Time Around" is a good place to start.
Smooth and suave keyboarding from the best........2000-01-25
A lot of FM stations took to playing Alex's version of the Ohio Player's "Sweet Sticky Thing" which caught my ear some years back. I purchased this CD for his renditon of SST and it sat untouched in my CD rack for some weeks on end. (Sorry, Alex.) Also, it really had not connected that the great pianist I saw in jazz concerts 3 times(! ) here in Emerald City, Oz, was Doctor Bugnon until I played this CD and fell in love with the great "Puzzle Pieces" which really shows off his virtuosity...he is simply the best. And, needless to say, I learned, finally, what his listeners love about him...

Enclosure 2, all four cds, is curated as a sprawling notebook filled with sounds and speech instead of sketches and words. Of any Partch recording extant, it gives the best picture of the man--as the curmudgeonly, extremely innovative misanthrope that he was, as the composer who was impossibly unlike anyone else before or since. The essence of Partch's music reflects the history of the world--from his particular perspective--the imaginings of ancient Greece to the influence of Chinese musical melodrama, all propelled by homemade instruments based on a 43-tone scale named things like the "Kithara" and the "Boo." These recordings also give the best sense of his philosophy of language in music. Lamenting the whole time how text in music had become detached from the language of everyday life, Partch ran music alongside newsboys' cries and hobos' diaries, following the forms, cadence, and dynamics of speech, rather than the other way around. From his juvenilia (a wonderful song he wrote at 18) to a 45-minute segment of his wake in 1974, the first steps towards exploring Partch's sparkling works fully are made here. --Robin Edgerton

Not the best show to represent Deep Purple.......2007-07-19
I was recently reading an older magazine which was bagging on the Mark 5 (Blackmore, Turner, Lord, Glover, Paice) tour in early 1990s, stating that that band was the worst in DP's history. the bootlegs of that tour, however, show that although Turner can be a bit lost in a few of the lyrics (forgetting a queue or two), he NEVER performed as badly as Tommy Bolin did on this recording. Tommy, David, and Glenn really disappoint here.
Coverdale seems either tired, drunk, or both. He's out of key here and there, and does not show the energy he had on Made in Europe. Hughes needs to give up the screeming and just play the bass. He might want to try singing also. Bolin, poor guy, was the victim of his own demons during this show and could hardly perform, leaving even the opening to BURN and many other parts he was paid to play to John Lord. In fact, it was John Lord and Ian Paice who basically held the show together.
As much as I love DP, I must say that it has to be questioned in why this album was released. I'd rather listen to SLAVES AND MASTERS and those live boots than have to play this CD.
Great live stuff!.......2007-02-02
Once again, I purchased this double CD with a fair amount of hesitation, since I had been hearing for years stories about how high Tommy and Glenn usually were, about Tommy's overdose and consequent loss of sensitivity in his fretting arm, about how bad this incarnation of the band was during that last tour... You know what I mean, right? Finally, and after listening to the samples available, my curiosity overcame my doubts and I decided to purchase it.
And after listening to it carefully, I can honestly say that it was well worth it, and that most of the talk about Tommy's lackluster performance is unjustified: if he was having a rough night, I can't imagine how good he must have been when he wasn't high. That's not to say that this is perfect or the most fundamental DP listening experience ever, but I think that at least for those who, like me, enjoy(ed) "Come Taste the Band", this is a great addition. Narcotic tales aside, the band sounds very good on the 7 songs they play off that record, which is something that totally makes sense.
My favorites are exactly the same ones as on CTTB: "I need Love" (even though the song proves to be quite a struggle for Coverdale), "This Time around/Owed to G" and "You Keep on Moving", all of them AWESOME tunes, played with lots of passion and feel. Maybe the only things that are a little distracting are David (mostly) and Glenn's sometimes off key screams while trying to reach some of the higher notes. Actually, that is the reason why I chose this instead of the "King Biscuit Flower Hour/ Foxbat" set, since the samples that I heard really spooked the heck out of me!!! I don't know what happened over the course of the 2 months that separate those two concerts, but you can certainly hear the difference between a good night and a bad one... Oh boy...anyway, other tracks that stand out for me are the long version of "Getting tighter", "Love Child", and "Drifter".
So why 4 and not 5 stars, though? Because there are a few glitches: Being a massive DP fan, I don't particularly appreciate it when my favorite music is messed up, or like in this case, "underplayed": the inclusion of just a snippet of "Soldier of Fortune" is a big disappointment to me, since it is one of my favorite songs and I would have loved to hear it in full; the inclusion of "Lady Luck" over "Coming Home" is criminal, if you ask me, since the latter is one of the best tracks off CTTB; Tommy's solo is not really a solo, but rather a 7 minute strumming excursion on guitar; but above all, the biggest "BUT" here are the versions of MK II and MKIII material, especifically 3 of my favorite DP songs: "Burn" basically goes over guitar-less, and while the liner notes on the CD claim that it was due to technical problems, I have reservations about that claim, and it's a major let down for me; "Stormbringer" is unnecessarily expanded and lacks the punch of the Mk III versions, and "Highway Star" is a little too much of a loose jam for my taste (something that was already happening during the "Stormbringer" tour, so I'm not blaming it on this lineup exclusively). And how come they didn't play "Woman from Tokio" in full, as opposed to just use a snipet of it during Jon Lord's solo? I mean, if you're gonna do something wrong, you better do it right! If they were gonna play Mk II material anyway, what could've been better than playing that song while being IN TOKIO??? However, the band does a pretty respectable job on "Smoke on the Water"(maybe they play it a little safe, but I like it nevertheless) and the mostly instrumental "Lazy", which pretty much shines as a jam.
Ultimately, all of those things are minor quibbles for a truly heroic performance, which is mostly carried over by the spectacular performances of founding members Ian Paice and Jon Lord (moreso on the older Mk II and Mk III material than anywhere else), who undoubtedly steal the show, coming to the forefront in the absence of Ritchie, and to fill the gaps left by Tommy. As individual performers, you might find flaws in these performances (especially on Tommy's), but as a whole, Deep Purple on a bad day were ages ahead of the average band, and Paice and Lord really impress throughout. I would highly recommend this set for the hardcore DP fan and for MK IV aficionados, but not to the casual listener who knows only the hits, since chances are you might end up disappointed.
a bad night for tommy.......2006-10-19
Hello- this concert is an pretty good show for DEEP PURPLE (david, ian, glenn, jon) but tommy bolin seems to be having an off night (what guitar great has not had a bad show ? )but there is a light at the end of tommy's tunnel, that is "WILD DOGS". i have always loved this song, especialy check out the early l.a. demo of "WILD DOGS" on "TOMMY BOLIN ARCHIVES VOL. 1" (it is almost better than the version on TEASER) anyway. tommy shines on this version. it makes this cd set worth the price.
if you like Coldplay, you wonýt like Deep Purple.......2006-04-12
The remastered version of Last Concert in Japan 1975 which had been rushed out quickly as a single EMI released - LP in 1977. this double CD set includes some unreleased songs that weren?t involved in the old vinyl release. Tommy Bolin?s guitar playing is amazing and he was on fire at night. Martin Birch the old time DP soundengineer had mixed up the LP very numb and avoided any guitar distortions what Bolin played. This double cd set reminds us as a small brother of the success of Made in Japan 1972.
Musically DP have more nice composition. but Roger Glover doesn?t want DP to be a trend. he said we?ll never be a trend, we are not into pop celebs. we?re just a natural group. Glenn Hughes said the same thing that he is just only a natural singer, who composed the songs that had happened to his life.
PS: Coldplay is a lovely band of many celebs but also the most detested band by the heavy rock fans.....
domo arigato Tokyo 1975 !!.......2006-03-04
the gig was fired by Tommy Bolin's energy. It was 15 Dec 1975 live at the Budokan Hall in JAPAN. Deep purple met their 12.000 strong crowd that night. The band brought a new guitar player Tommy Bolin (who took over the shoes of Ritchie Blackmore in 1975). The result is fantastic here, you may listen the thundering songs from Burn until the mayhem Highway star. You will never loose the Deep Purple raw and strong energy on the japanese stage. Some Deep purple Mk II fans will appreciate this live cd. THIS TIME AROUND can be comparable with MAde In japan 1972. Need I say more?
