A Stunning Debut!.......2007-04-17

Nox Arcana's debut CD Darklore Manor is a stunning, chilling instrumental concept album that could easily serve as the soundtrack for a classic haunted house film. Very few debut CDs have the amazing musicianship and technical virtuosity that Joseph Vargo and William Piotrowski exhibit on this album. There are unforgettable, elegant piano-dominated melodies like "Veil of Darkness," as well as sinister organ pieces, moody harpsichord songs and elaborate, stirring orchestral set pieces that demonstrate an instinctive mastery of composition and melody. The entire gamut of Gothic music is presented here, and woven throughout the CD's 21 tracks are ghostly sound effects, chilling choirs and eerie narrations, all of which contribute to a mesmerizing musical tapestry. The CD's highlight may be "The Forgotten" - a beautiful, moving piano elegy that you will never forget. Many musicians strive their whole careers for an album this accomplished. The beautifully designed CD booklet by Joseph Vargo and Christine Filipak is another delight - this is an album that shows a rare attention to detail, from the packaging to the mixing. Nox Arcana: The project that truly represents Halloween and for people who simply love classical-oriented Gothic instrumentals.......2007-04-09

I was told, by a mysterious voice in the night, that I should seek Nox Arcana and await further instructions. But it all began years ago with the discovery of the Midnight Syndicate. So, I did the obvious and entered "Midnight Syndicate" in my computer search engine, and the lone website introduced itself to me. All went dark and quiet, and the room got cold, and I could see my breath as I panted in fear, and I heard laughter amongst terrifying screams, but yet, I was alone. This was only my introduction to the Midnight Syndicate and soon to follow was the birth of something even better, the nightmareish apparitions of Nox Arcana. I was compelled to bring Nox Arcana into my world, and so I've been in the dark ever since. But, then again, it became a blissful absence from the norm. Although, Halloween is never really mentioned with any of the Nox Arcana CD's, it does seem that everyday is Halloween in my world, and for the past four years, I've always feared that I've sold my soul somehow. I believe that I sacrificed my soul the day I got out my credit card and asked the cyber spirits to bring my first Nox Arcana CD into my home. It was this CD: "Darklore Manor"

Something became different about me. My very presence wasn't acknowledged in any normal way anymore. Was I being ignored, or am I even in the room at all? Something just wasn't right. I've had days that I've stared into the mirror, but somehow, I wasn't there. When I speak to strangers in the street, I don't think that they even acknowledge me. I speak with just a small hiss of words, and people respond as if they've just been pushed by a cold wind. My loved ones speak of me, as if I've departed from this world, but yet, I am in the room. Only when I laugh, do people respond as if they've heard something. They cuddle together, in fear of their safety, and cry out my name, in a past tense, as if I am torturing them. This wasn't fun anymore. It wasn't fun, THEN, anyway.

I wander aimlessly, finally coming to terms with this apparition that I have become. My only consolation, deep into the night, is to take some of my Nox Arcana CD's and my mini-CD player, to the cemetery and lay against a tombstone, and watch the wind swirl up the leaves in a satanic dance before my eyes, while the music plays and eats away at my scruples of logic. I feel a cold embrace of many condemned angels who've cast off all their inhibitions and indulged in lustful passion upon my defenseless mortal flesh. I am consumed into their ritual with reckless abandon. Returning to reality is all nonsense now. My only fear, is that the batteries in my CD player will weaken and diminish this clash of passion of my psychological pleasure and terror.

I am so glad that Nox Arcana has entered my once typical, pop culture world. However, I feel now, that if I should ever die, I may not know the difference. I've been enjoying this nocturnal bliss for a couple of years now and there's no going back. I walk this world in a cold absence where I question if my presence is perceived at all.

If you'd like to share in this experience with me, start off with this CD of "Darklore Manor". Then get "Necronomicon", "Winter's Knight", "Transylvania", "Carnival of Lost Souls", and their latest (as of 2007) called "Blood of the Dragon".

This music is not heavy metal. It's not satanic music. It's just a mix of classically-influenced instrumentals with various snippets of dark poetry and ghastly effects. You'll hear tormented screams, deathly bell tolls, sinister laughter, grandfather clocks, howling winds, and other little clever effects with piano, organ, and harpsichord, supported by rich strings and a mellotron sound, that promote a uniquely beautiful, but yet, horrifying terror that may claim your soul. It's a small sacrifice for the sake of a dark happiness.

Alas, here's one more way that I have benefited from the music of Nox Arcana. By listening to these CD's through headphones at the cemetery, alone, late at night, in the cold dark, there is a terror that I've experienced that has actually helped me lose weight. To be so terrified that my heart pulsated so intensely that I feared my heart would just burst! That, and the accidental soiling of myself, helped me lose about three pounds. Who would have thought that terror could promote weight loss?

So, if it's dark and disturbing, it has a place in my heart.

A well-woven dark tale.......2007-02-22

Though a bit more specific and talky than the Midnight Syndicate CDs (which was my first venture into this kind of atmospheric music), I found Nox Arcana's Darklore Manor to be quite creepy. It tells a story of an house under a curse, and the strange happenings therein. While it leaves less to the imagination than Midnight Syndicate's 13th Hour, it has plenty of frightening tracks for your next horror gaming session or Halloween party.

Many Moods For Midnight.......2005-10-25

This is one of George Howard's more complex and varied works. The opening cut "Within Your Eyes" is dreamy. "Still In Love" has a soft sweet side. "Smooth" is on the funkier side and cool. "Africa" is a tribute to a rich heritage. Not one version but two unique versions of this song are included. George Howard in his later works was an artist who could mix a variety of sounds and moods in one cd. He left us with many sides of his artistry and this is a fine example.

Along with Grover Washington,George Howard represented my introduction to Jazz.As proof,I have his early stuff on original Vinyl LP's.To lose both men with close similarities,and with their level of consistency for awesome sounds so close together is sad.This void will take some time to fill.

I have been listening to george howard's jazz for about 3 years. I can't get enough of his smooth style and was shocked to hear about his death. I am still listening and collecting his albums and have not been disapointed with anything i have heard. His MIDNIGHT MOOD album is excellent. We have lost a great musician.

Outstanding CD and Artist.......2000-03-30

I am still saddened by the passing of one of my favorite artists. I will never forget George Howard. I was listening to him one day and felt inspired to send George a Thank You card for adding so much joy to my life. Three weeks later I came home from an early movie and George Howard called me to let me know how much he appreciated my card. I tripped out and played that tape for all of my friends. Damn I wish I would have been there to receive his call! I will never forgive myself for not writing him again and letting him know how much his call meant to me. I love you George and will always cherish your work and be eternally honored by your telephone call.

Mark Murphy/MIDNIGHT MOOD.......2007-03-10

As a 'bigtime' fan of Mark Murphy since I first heard him sing on the late
50s Steve Allen Sunday show and collecting all of his albums from LPs to
CDs, and trying to catch him in live performance on those somewhat rare
occasions he appears on the East Coast, it was a treat to discover this
release of material recorded in 1967. It is, as w/all Mark Murphy
recordings, a joy. He is, for my money, our best male jazz singer.
Having last seen him just one year ago (Iridium, NYC), Mark is still
singin' and swingin' as strong and on target as he does on this 1967 CD,
and for that matter, from 1956-7 consistently for 5 decades. If you can
dig him, you won't go wrong w/this or any other of Mark Murphy's large
and profound oeuvre of classic and innovative jazz vocals. Listen up!

Full Moon Mood CD.......2005-10-27

Perhaps Mark's second best album (after RAH!), with a fantastic band, including my friend Jimmy Woode jr.
I met Jimmy several times in Holland. Jimmy wrote some songs from this album and is a very good bass player out off the Duke Ellington stable. My favourite tune is Sconsolato.
But this band swings like hell!

UNDERRATED!!!!.......2006-05-03

UNDERRATED!!! That's what Gary Taylor is and has been for almost 20 years. He's one of the, if not the, best balladere's in the music industry. His smooth jazzy tunes coupled with his smooth demeanor and "in your face" lyrics compliment each other on each of his albums/CDs. Listening to his lyrics, we find out that we all can relate to what he is saying. I feel that this CD, "The Mood of Midnight" is probably pound for pound his best work. Hopefully, one of these days radio stations across the country will give "The Great Gary Taylor" the respect he rightfully deserves.

A smooth singer.......2005-07-09

I first heard Gary Taylor in 1988, when he recorded The 'album ' entitled " Compassion " and I was floored. His voice is soooooooo smooth and subtle. He has a way of saying all the things we men want to say to our women. I've purchased four of his CD's " Square One " , " Mood of Midnight " ," Love Dance ", and Under the Night Light " . Now that I have a computer I can purchase " Compasson " ( which I've been looking for, a long time ) and His latest " Ecletic Bohemian ". By the way, he has never released a bad CD-period. " Mood of Midnight is no exception, it's great.

Really Late Review.......2005-07-06

But....I am listening to this CD right now while surfing Amazon and I just had to post a review of the project. I haven't listened to it for a while (misplaced it), but I found it today and boy did I forget how peaceful, soothing and rhymthic it is for the soul, heart and mind. Mr. Taylor put together yet another masterful and soulful CD; the tune, "Time Has Run Out of Time," is one of the most beautiful and honest songs, I've ever listened to..and it hits home for me. Hmmm..and "Rest My Lips" is just liquid fire...

The entire CD will have you sinking into soft pillows and reveling in his talent. I own all of his musical forays, but this is one of my favorites.

I urge anyone that doesn't own any Gary Taylor to start here and I guarantee, you will hunger to get your hands on any and everything he's every made. He's that soothing and compelling.

"Mood of Midnight". What can I say. This was my first Gary Taylor experience, and I've purchased every CD that is available by this too overlooked artist. My favorites include "Mood of Midnight", "I Will Be Here", "Special", "Rest My Lips", "In Search Of", "One Day At A Time", and the ever-so haunting "Time's Run Out Of Time". Why an artist, so talented is not given his due, is beyond me. However, there are some of us who will never forget such greatness. Luther step back, Gary has taken over.

This album is excellent! Three tubas and a euphonium. I especially love it for the beautiful Christmas half, tracks 18 thru 35. (It's not a new album, it's just the same album wrongly listed here as out of stock, under the title "Mighty Tubadours" [without the "The"] and a different ASIN.
