Customer Reviews:
Seminal box set for soul & R&B fans.......2004-10-26
It's amazing how many hidden gems are mixed in amongst the more well-known songs in this fantastic 9 disc box set. From Darrell Banks' "Just Because Your Love is Gone" to the Newcomers' "Open Up Your Heart (and Let Me In), this is simply a treasure-trove of soul / r&b delights. If you like Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, the Dramatics, etc, you will love this set....good for dancin', good for romancin'!
Full of Great Stuff.......1999-08-25
Different from the material on the first Stax box - soul music was getting more of a standard rock/dance beat underneath of it, and the music was layed down through multi-tracking rather than through live arrangements. But it's still the voice of soul. There is a wealth of fine music on here. If you choose to buy this, I don't think you'll be sorry. There's a lot of pickings on here. Basically, this is a wonderful archival package.
It is THE collector's box set...amazing! I love it!.......1998-12-21
This box set is something I have coveted ever since we had it at the radio station I used to D.J. a soul show on. It has EVERY single you could want. All of the STAX sound is represented...funky dance numbers, ballads, and grooves that make your butt jump up and shake. It's an amazing resource. The booklet that comes with it is fantastic and super-informative. It's also a great place to look for samples, or find the originals that have been sampled from in a lot of Hip-Hop songs. For instance...Lynda Lyndell singing "What A Man", which was sampled (practically covered) by En Vogue and Salt 'N Peppa a few years ago. The originals are often better than the remakes!! Soul purists who can't get enough, Memphis music lovers, Hip Hop musicians, this is a box set for you...like you wouldn't believe! (And it's only one in a series of three amazing STAX box sets.)
A good complication of Stax soul from the 70es........1998-09-09
If you know the first Stax box and like the music from Jakie Brown movie, you will not regret bying this one. This is a nice complication of old soul musicians wich we dont realy remember in the 90es. Many of the numbers you will recognice, because they have been recorded as cover vertions later on. Therefore it does'nt seem to be old music, but just the original recording of some of the music we hear in the radio.
This is one of the titles you learn to enjoy, the more times you hear it the more you will enjoy it.
A good collection of soul, you dont get tired of because there are 200+ numbers to chose from.

Product Description
By 1962, Motown wasnt yet the hit factory it would later become, but they had regular chart success, and were reaching across the ocean to influence the emerging British Invasion. Both Smokey Robinsons Youve Really Got A Hold On Me (later covered by The Beatles) and The Contours Berry Gordy-penned smash Do You Love Me (covered by The Dave Clark 5) make their debut on this set.
The year marked the debut of four new imprints in the Motown empire: Divinity, Workshop, Mel-o-dy, and Gordy. It also saw You Beat Me To The Punch top the R&B charts, as well as cracking the Top 10 on the pop side.
This four-CD set offers a miraculous peek behind the curtains of what was rapidly becoming The Sound Of Young America. It features the A-side and B-side of every single released by Motown and its subsidiaries during the labels fourth year of existence. Each track builds ever closer to reaching Gordys goal of growing his music empire into an entertainment juggernaut. Over the course of the sets 112 tracks, you can hear The Temptations masquerading as The Pirates, the vocal version of the Theme From Exodus, and the phone number that was on the lips of America: Beechwood 4-5789, courtesy of the Marvelettes.
The opulent packaging includes 88 pages of rare photos, detailed annotations liner notes. It also features a reproduction 45-rpm single from its era; in this case, its Mary Wells You Beat Me To The Punch b/w Old Love (Lets Try It Again). Claudette Robinson, a member of The Miracles and Smokeys ex-wife, contributed a personal essay to the set detailing the artists-eye-view of life in the labels early years. Also included is an historical overview by author and scholar Gerald Early of Washington University in St. Louis, and track-by-track annotations, with not just song credits but stories behind each song, by noted authors and discographers Bill Dahl and Keith Hughes.
Customer Reviews:
Worth the money.......2007-04-03
You don't often encounter a set this pricey that is worth the investment but Hippo Select has done it with this excellent collection. This is the second installment of Hippo's series of boxed sets collecting each and every single from Motown's golden era. The tracks here are from 1962 when Motown was just at the dawn of firmly establishing itself as the premiere youth record label in the country. The identity is largely in place although not quite everyone is in their stride. Except for the Four Tops, Jr. Walker and the All Stars and the Jackson Five (who would not arrive until much later), all the icons are in place. This is Motown on the verge.
Due to that fact, this set is enormously rewarding to the Motown collector. While there are a sizable amount of hits ("Do You Love Me", "You've Really Got a Hold on Me", "Two Lovers", "Hitch Hike" "The One Who Really Loves You", "Playboy"), this set is not as chock full of the endlessly repackaged hits that dot the later sets in the series and sundry Motown compilations. Instead, you get rarely anthologized lost classics from legends like Marvin Gaye- "Mr. Sandman" (a very moody midtempo version kind of like his later reading of "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby")"It Hurts Me Too"- the Temptations- "Dream Come True","Paradise" and "Slow Down Heart" (all available on their first album)plus their lost single as the Pirates- the Supremes' great doo wop-girl group hybrid and early chart entry "Let Me Go the Right Way"- Stevie Wonder "Contract of Love", "Little Water Boy", "I Call it Pretty Music But Old People Call it the Blues" all of a piece with his early party masterpieces like "Fingertips" and "Uptight"- the Vandellas- "I'll Have to Let Him Go" etc. There are great B-sides from the then established acts like two versions of the Miracles "If Your Mother Only Knew" and Mary Wells' "Old Love".
There are the very fine early performance by Motown producers Eddie Holland and Lamont Dozier. The four Holland tracks- followups to the much anthologized hit "Jamie"- have long been lost in the CD era for those who don't patronize the grey market. Then there are great one shots or groups in development like Berry Gordy's brother Bob Kayli, the gospel group the Wright Specials, and blues singer Hattie Littles. I'm only really scratching the surface here. I would estimate that even die-hard Motown fans only have about half of these tracks on CD at most. And they don't have them in these perfect singles mixes without the overwhelming highs that damaged the "Ultimate series".
While not everything here is class (I could live without hearing the jazz of Hank and Carol Diamond or the Supremes' rinky dink "He's 17" again.) the quality is definitely the majority. And everything is at least interesting from a historic perspective.
The music though is only part of the story. The packaging is superb and is really what makes this collection an essential multi-media experience. The set comes in the form of a 88-page hardcover book with the CDs in the back. The book contains dozens of great photos of the artists (many of them rare) and vintage record sleeves. You even get a 45 of Mary Wells "You Beat Me to the Punch" inserted in the front cover.
There are also fine essays by Claudette Robinson and Gerald Early. Both really set the scene for the changes that were making Motown possible and the changes that were also occuring because of the record label and its success. Early's rememberance of how, as a boy, he heard the Marvelettes' eerie romantic ballad "Strange I Know" (included here) as a prophecy of changes in the Civil Rights' Movement is both moving and insightful. Robinson's recollections give an insight into the family atmosphere of the label, the youth of the artist, the shoestring Motown was really operating on at the time, and the difficulties she had as the only female member of an otherwise male group. Looking at the pictures and reading the stories, you really get an appreciation of just what Berry Gordy did and how radical and important it really was. Stories about the hours the man spent on "Let Me Go the Right Way" show the commitment he had not only to his dream but also to the music. This is a major comeuppance for anyone who thought "Dreamgirls" was gospel. He may have been corrupted by greed later on but he is one of the great men of our times.
This all does not even mention the fine track by track annotation done by Bill Dahl. Dahl makes use of new and previously published interviews to give the story of each and every song including chart positions. In many ways, these songs are the story of their time. For example, one of the consistent lyrical themes of the set- noted by Dahl- is the separation caused by military service. It's the kind of thing you wouldn't notice hearing these tracks spread out but with the scholarship captured here and the tracks laid out end to end, you really get an insight of how the draft affected early '60s life even before the Viet Nam war. When you're listening to this set, reading these notes and looking at these photographs, you almost feel as if you're stepping into this other world.
A track as great and soulful as "You've Really Got a Hold On Me" doesn't need this context but, in a set like this it helps you understand how certain events came to be and how we got where we are now. It's an insight into who we are.
For people who are truly serious in learning about American popular music, culture and life will be endlessly rewarded by the treasures here.
Obscure Motown.......2007-01-09
This is a beautifully packaged set. However, this is not the most familiar Motown material. For semi-serious completists, it's a treat!
Enter Stevie Wonder.......2005-11-21
As far as box sets go, this series is destined to be the king of them all. Most of us recall the three Complete Stax/Volt Singles box sets a few years back. These three sets contained 19 discs with every Stax and almost all its subsidiary labels' A-sides and a handful of B-sides. (The Gospel Truth singles were completely ignored, so there were no Rance Allen or Maceo Woods singles included). Nearly every Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Isaac Hayes and you-name-it B-side went M.I.A. Not only do these Motown sets include every B-side, but they include ALL subsidiary labels plus first and second pressings which vary from slightly to two different takes. Yes, folks-everything on Tamla, Motown, Gordy, V.I.P., Soul, Rare Earth plus the temporary labels such as Divinity (Gospel), Mel-o-dy (Country), Workshop Jazz, Miracle, plus all the Rock/Pop, Blues, and Jazz recordings Hitsville ever put out. If that isn't enough, each set comes with a replica of a major 45 from that era. (The second volume features Mary Wells' single, "You Beat Me To The Punch").
The second installment includes 45s from 1962. It is this year in which we see the beginning recordings of Martha & the Vandellas and Stevie Wonder. It is hard to believe that Stevie Wonder is the only Motown artist from this period that is still a major entity in which fans still eagerly wait for a new product. His latest offering, "A Time To Love" is one of this year's major highlights.
Marvin Gaye recorded a lovely version of "Mr. Sandman". Until now, folks have had to break out a vinyl copy of Marvin Gaye's Greatest Hits to listen to this gem as this is the only M.G. single that hasn't entered the digital market since it all started. A fast shuffle, the vibraphone gives it a nostalgic, "trad jazz" feel. It is one of the most exciting moments of the 1962 volume. I mentioned "Soldier's Plea" on the first volume. My mistake-it's on this set. The snappy B-side, "Taking My Time" is better and it's no wonder it appeared on the Greatest Hits instead of the A-side. It was written by Anna Gaye and Mickey Stevenson, who took a bit from Cole Porter's "Anything Goes". It works. 1962 was the year Marvin hit pay dirt with "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow" and "Hitch Hike". Listen to the last few seconds of "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow" and observe that it doesn't fade so quickly. Again, that was the mono album track you were used to. Nothing beats the good old 45 mix. The latter was the bigger hit, though. Martha & company were on hand for the backing vocals.
Mary Wells also hit big this year with not two, but three hits all making top 10. "The One Who Really Loves You" (February) was written and produced by Smokey. The distinctive Latin rhythms give it an exotic sway, so the formula continued with "You Beat Me To The Punch" (July) and on to "Two Lovers" (October). Of special interest, "Punch's" B-side, "Old Love" was the first to show the triumvirate writing team of Holland-Dozier-Holland. It is also one of at least two B-sides that enjoyed a second mix so it appears in two different forms here. Mary was also the first to record a version of Smokey's "Operator". It is featured here in up tempo form, whereas the version Brenda Holloway recorded in 1965 was slow and sultry. Mary is backed on the above five recordings by The Love Tones.
The Downbeats and Saundra Mallett teamed up in late 1965 to release a double A-sided single, a rare fete in the Motown factory. "Put Yourself In My Place" was flipped over and "Darling Baby" became the hit while the two different artists were christened The Elgins. But I'm getting ahead of myself here. The Downbeats' "Your Baby's Back" is a pure late-night party slow dance song, while Saundra Mallet's "Camel Walk" was another dance craze in mid-tempo. The B-side "It's Gonna Be Hard Times" became the mystery album track on the Elgins' "Darling Baby" album in 1966. Martha's girls once again helped out on backing vocals; in fact, The Vandellas were even on the label!
Two singles by Sammy Ward graces this volume. "Big Joe Moe" is a Motown brass bonanza giving trombonist George Bohannon a chance to work his slide a bit. It's also a take on Leiber-Stoller's "Smokey Joe's Café". "Someday Pretty Baby" and "Part Time Love" appeared on the "Switched On Blues" album in stereo form, the latter in extended a five plus minute version. It features Stevie Wonder on harmonica.
The Temptations' legacy continues to the present day; albeit with all new personnel save for Otis Williams, the head honcho. It would be two years before they were to become a household name, though. "Dream Come True" was the first Motown record to feature an Ondioline, an organ-like keyboard and the first record on the Gordy imprint as the Miracle label was discontinued. "Paradise" was a mid-tempo doo-wop ditty with a "Four Seasons" feel. "Slow Down Heart", the B-side, is worth mentioning because it is really the beginning of The Temps perfect blending in a ballad setting. "Mind Over Matter" and "I'll Love You Till I Die" is their recording under the moniker of The Pirates on the Mel-O-Dy label. The latter features a frenzied vocal from Paul Williams and is one piece of Hitsville magic!
Eddie Holland hammered away at an attempt to capture his first success that "Jamie" gave him the previous year. "You Deserve What You Get" was his first earnest effort. "Last Night I Had A Vision" shows Eddie's slowly and dramatically bending notes, a trick not often tried in the R&B market. It was usually left to Gospel artists such as Mahalia Jackson and more "sophisticated" singers. Eddie's a real pro and I'll compare him to just about anyone. Other singles include "If Cleopatra Took A Chance" (featured on his one and only album for Motown), "If It's Love" and "Darling I Hum Our Song". The latter became B-sides for Martha & the Vandellas (Quicksand) and The Four Tops (Something About You), Martha's being the definitive version. "Cleopatra" has a definite Cuban feel, which was common for this era at Hitsville.
The Miracles' bounced back that year with "I'll Try Something New", a Polynesian delight to be sure. He actually wrote the song at a baseball game, showing his mind was more on romance than sports. It became one of his signature songs and to this day is one of the greatest love songs of all time. The B-side, "You Never Miss A Good Thing" comes from the Cookin' With the Miracles album brushing Gospel with traditional jazz. It has one of the strongest melodies and the drama is tense. I didn't even mention "Way Over There" on my review of Volume One, shame on me. Because of The Miracles' growing popularity, the single was given a second chance to chart and chart it did! It was even given a new B-side from their latest album, "I'll Try Something New" called "If Your Mother Only Knew" appearing here in two different mixes. As good as Smokey was and still is, he really doesn't know the market well. "Happy Landing" was released with no result. The deejays flipped it, and "You've Really Got A Hold On Me" took off like a burning mad man. The call-and-response with Smokey as the preacher, and his fellow Miracles the congregation, a new formula began, which continued into 1965.
The Marvelettes followed their previous disappointment ("Twistin' Postman") with "Playboy". It was a return to form and welcomed with opened arms as it hit top ten. It's B-side; "All the Love I've Got" comes from the "Please Mr. Postman" LP and like "Dream Come True" features the Ondioline keyboard. Marvin Gaye supplied the ladies with their follow-up, "Beechwood 4-5789" and this recording established them as The Sweethearts of Motown. "Someway, Somehow" and "Strange I Know" showcases Gladys Horton singing ballads as well as the rest of them.
The Supremes are unarguably the greatest female group of all time and these singles prove it. "Your Heart Belongs To Me" is heard in two different mixes and again the second one was a vast improvement giving it an echo. Like the Mary Wells singles, this one came from the pen of Smokey and is given the Latin treatment. The B-side, "Seventeen" is nothing more than a Brill Building send up, its only distinction featuring the brass section's trombone player going nuts and that Ondioline again. Diana is always fun to listen to and here she pays tribute to the great Buddy Holly, showing she had a lot of vocal tricks up her sleeve. "Let Me Go The Right Way" is somewhere between inner city Baptist and Sanctified and has Diana working hard. She handled it and then some. One can hear the others ably responding with all the fervor of a camp revival meeting to bring it home. "Time Changes Things" was co-written by Freddie Gorman, a former mail carrier who joined up with the Originals in the late sixties. It has that same funky rhythm that Mary Wells' "Old Love" had with the same longing to try it again message. It's great to listen to these two songs in succession.
The Valadiers' struggle with success at Motown was a real puzzle since they weren't a bad group at all. Like The Temptations, the boys shifted from the Miracle label to Gordy. "Because I Love Her" was written by Berry Gordy and has Stuart Avig reaching toward Eddie Holland territory. "While I'm Away" (Ivy Hunter and Clarence Paul) serves as a better follow up to Greetings (This Is Uncle Sam). This could have at least received airplay had it been the A-side. But then, the boss is always right.
Enter Stevie Wonder. "I Call It Pretty Music, Parts 1 and 2" is one fun record. Part 1 is a fast pace blues while the B-side is a slow harmonica driven piece of extravaganza. An extended stereo mix of this can also be found on the "Switched On Blues" disc. "La La La La La" is especially interesting because it will be recognized by many because the L.A. based Latin group The Blendells brought it out of obscurity in 1964 making it a big hit. "Contract On Love" is a beauty in these early days and features the band in good form. The Temptations did backing vocals adding to the festivities. An extended stereo version appeared briefly on "A Package Of 16 Original Big Hits". "Sunset" finally appears in its original full length form here. A slow blues, it has all the makings of a fine standard. It was covered by The Supremes in 1965 on their Country Western & Pop disc, featuring the great Mary Wilson on lead.
Lamont Dozier recorded but one solo record on the Mel-O-Dy imprint. "Dearest One" b/w "Fortune Teller Tell Me" has him in a Brook Benton mode. I really like his voice. It's a shame he didn't sing more songs.
The Contours switched from Motown to Gordy in 1962 and really hit it big with Berry Gordy's tour-de-force "Do You Love Me". Berry had initially planned to have The Temptations record it, but they were at a Dixie Hummingbirds gig and lost out on what could have been their first hit. The follow-up, "Shake Sherry" was every bit as much as a powerhouse, but the public was too fickle to stay loyal. The B-sides, "Move Mr. Man" and "Better Get In Line" were fast-paced show stoppers as well.
Hattie Littles was a true blues singer that deserves a whole disc by herself. She's a throwback to Koko Taylor and Etta James recording far too little for Hitsville. "Back In My Arms Again" (not the same song as The Supremes' 1965 hit) is a slow blues giving the band a chance to show their stuff. "Is It True (What They Say About You)" is faster and moves along like something out of New Orleans. Her other singles include "Your Love Is Wonderful" in two different mixes and "Here You Come".
Gino Parks' "Fire" is a ferocious Gospel-like testimony of how he can't keep his love under control. "For This I Thank You" is a minor key blues and his influence from Sister Rosetta Tharpe is betrayed here. The latter was also featured on "Switched On Blues".
Martha & the Vandellas would have to wait until mid-1963 to hit the chart, but while they were waiting, this wonderful piece came together called "I'll Have To Let Him Go" (Not to be confused with their "I Gotta Let You Go" single from the late 60's). Once again, this melody comes right out of early Jazz, yet the slow introduction is more typical of the Phil Spector singles. Strangely, it was recorded and released before the first incarnation of the group which was originally called The Vells, with Gloria Williams on lead vocals. "You'll Never Cherish A Love So True" b/w "There He Is At My Door" (the second single released by the Holland-Dozier-Holland team) featured cow bells and a funky beat that wouldn't quit. "There He Is" had the Motown brass once again punching the rhythm to death. This same backing track would be used with Martha's lead vocal overdubbed for the "Come And Get These Memories" album. The song also appeared on "Dance Party" and the B-side of "Dancing In The Street". "Cherish" also landed on the Mel-O-Dy label.
Workshop Jazz came into play in 1962 and would only last through the following year. Two singles came out that year: Hank & Carol Diamond's "Exodus" b/w "I Remember You" and The Earl Washington All Stars' "Opus No. 3" b/w "March Lightly". "I Remember You" stands out as a fine cover in a relaxed setting, while both sides of the Earl Washington 45 is stunning. I love Jazz and it's not hard to get me to listen to it. These four tracks swing like mad and shouldn't have any problem finding their way on to a play list on local Jazz stations.
The Divinity label also debuted in 1962 with the Wright Specials. "That's What He Is To Me" b/w "Pilgrim Of Sorrow" is somewhere between The Gospel Harmonettes and the Davis Sisters. It should be noted here that Kim Weston was once a member of The Specials, but by the time they were signed, Weston had dropped out to pursue a secular career.
I regret space does not permit me to touch on everything in this collection, but don't let that stop you. Listen to the clips wherever you can find them. Yes, there are some real dogs in the collection, but there's some great music here too. Find some way to get the funds together to buy these because The Complete Motown Singles series is the most valuable piece of American Music History of the 60's. Not since the Complete Hot Five and Seven recordings of Louis Armstrong and the Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia have vaulted recordings of this magnitude seen the light of day.
Splendid!.......2005-11-13
Hip O select has done it again. This is the second set of the Complete Motown singles and like the first set, it is solid. These recordings would not be of much interest to individuals who only like HIT records, but to people with a keen interest in real historic r& b, this is the real deal. The remastering is excellent(24 bit) and my only complaint is that all tracks are MONO. (I'm sure the MONO freaks will be happy.) The listener will hear the Motown sound evolving right before their ears. Mary Wells, Gino Parks, Smokey and the Miracles, the Temptations (Pirates), Paula Greer, the Contours and others too numeous to name are singing their hearts out. This is essential r & b and they will only press about 5000 of these cd sets. They are also a little pricey at $20 per cd in a set of 5 or 6. The music itself will justify the price. Once this set is out of print, the value will increase exponentially so, get it while it's hot. Hippo Select is the way to go!

Depeche Mode - 1983-84........2004-04-04
"Singles Box 2" has a handful of Depeche Mode's most vital hits. Capturing the period 1983-1984, this box set has signature moments like "Everything Counts," "People Are People," and the s&m bite of "Master and Servant" (it also has the singles "Get the Balance Right," "Blasphemous Rumours," and "Love in Itself). All the singles come with b-sides and/or extended remixes, with other noteworthy tracks such as the excellent non-album cut "(Set Me Free) Remotivate Me," the "Silk Mix" of another b-side "In Your Memory," and the 12-inch version of "Get the Balance Right." Also, I've said it before, and I'll repeat it here: this box set has no "new" material, so everything you see has been previously released. The booklet has only the tracklisting of the entire box set, with no lyrics or photos. But who cares? Any Depeche Mode fan worth his/her salt will pick this winner up, and even though they may already have these singles, this box set presents them in superior sound on CD. A keeper.

Customer Reviews:
Elvis makes the leap to great singer.......2007-02-04
Elvis Costello had begun the transformational phase of his career. After three perfect albums in a row ("My Aim Is True," "This Year's Model" and "Armed Forces"), he was tiring of what he perceived as a rut. When he convened The Attractions to begin work on "Get Happy," he'd made the decision to make a break from the "punk rock" tag. And so, a whole new era began.
"Singles Volume 2" covers the ground from "Get Happy" to just before "Punch The Clock." Elvis was on a creative tear that saw him dabbling in everything from soul ("High Fidelity") to Nashville Country ("A Good Year For The Roses") to the studio experimentation of "Imperial Bedroom." He was also adjusting his skills as a vocalist. He was toning down his attack to the point where the crooning of the country singles and the nuance of "Man Out Of Time" didn't exceed his delivery.
For the collector, there are a couple of goodies here. "Party Party" makes its first appearance on an Elvis CD, as do some of the DJ edits and extended versions. The collection closes with "Pills And Soap," a blistering diatribe against Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher released under the penname The Imposter. It ceded Costello's love of the single medium as a way to issue statements, and ends this box-set with one of his most brilliant singles. Collectors may not get much from this set, but it still found a place in my library.
EC's singles #13 to 24.......2004-01-01
Made in EU in 2003, Serial# ELVISBOX-102, Playing Time 103:33
Are you a Costello completist? If you are, there's no doubt you'll buy this 12-disc box set!
However, this set is not quite as "interesting" as the first of the series: though this is my favorite EC era, there's nothing here that even the casual fan won't already have, especially if (s)he owns the remastered version of "Get Happy!" and/or the expanded versions of the albums.
This box covers the 12 UK singles released between April 1980 and May 1983, and includes tracks from the 7-inch and 12-inch versions (which sometimes had different b-sides); for example, disc 7 (I'm Your Toy) has 6 tracks on it!
Just like the 1st box set did, this little "chest" includes a 12-page booklet that gives a track-by-track history of each of the singles.
While the first box set would have fitted on a single disc, this one wouldn't (even by removing the duplicate appearance of the "Imperial Bedroom" song.)
Furthermore, the first box had a few tracks making it onto CD format for the first time; there are even fewer this time, so this one is more for the EC collector.
If you are considering getting only 1 of the 3 boxes, I would suggest you start with volume 1; you'd at least get a few tracks otherwise unavailable on CD, and get your own opinion as to the merit of purchasing these boxes... quite frankly, even though it IS good music, this one is mostly if you like the packaging idea, and deem it worthy of the price tag!

Skip the terrible pap - uh, pop - and step back.......2001-04-19
Like everyone except Christ, Lee Perry was, after all, human. This set is the second in Trojan's series of two-disc volumes collecting every Upsetter label 45 rpm single the producer leased to the company from 1969 to 1973. As such, it's a look at his technical and musical progression from silly experiments to serious experimentation.
This second volume drops us into the pivotal year of 1970. Scratch is crudely splicing together previous hits into loungy pastiches, perfecting his bass sound, jumping on the DJ bandwagon, divining the hidden talents of Bob Marley and the Wailers, and continuing to record oppressively banal Jamaican pop tunes, while on the side he's running a record shop complete with a bar (where alcohol is not the only intoxicant served.)
It's the banal vocal tracks that weigh down this collection, the least of which are covers of Northern Hemisphere hits like "Let it Be" and "Spinning Wheel". But when the Upsetter gathers the Upsetters and lets the tapes roll, later interjecting obscure effects-laden vocals (or overdubbing a hypercharged Dave Barker) or dropping out certain tracks at unexpected moments, all is well and you got yerself some funky, silly, yet edgy classics.

Customer Reviews:
AN ESSENTIAL COLLECTION OF SUN'S RICH HISTORY.......2003-10-09
This is a truly wonderful example of great rock'n'roll/rockabilly. Volume 2 of "The Complete Sun Singles" unearths many rare gems that really should have more exposure than some of the more typical examples of early rock'n'roll. It covers the very fertile and most successful period between 1955-57. The likes of Rosco Gordon, Sonny Burgess, Malcolm Yelvington, Billy Riley and Warren Smith really hold their own in the company of better known legends such as Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis & Roy Orbison among others. It becomes obvious as the set moves along that the purely country and blues tracks are being phased in favor of the rockabilly/rock'n'roll leanings that become more dominant. This Volume of the series really kicks butt and the sound quality is superb with that hint of rawness that sets a Sun Records release apart from other labels. The obvious highlights here include "Matchbox", "Blue Suede Shoes" (Perkins), "Get Rhythm", "I Walk The Line" (Cash), "Ooby Dooby" and Rockhouse (Orbison) "Whole Lotta Shakin..." & "It'll Be Me" (Jerry Lee) however special mention should go to Warren Smith's rockin' "Miss Froggie" and "Ubangi Stomp" as well as Billy Riley's "Flying Saucers Rock 'N' Roll" & "Red Hot". Another forgotten gem is Jerry Lee Lewis' "End Of The Road", originally the b-side to "Crazy Arms" and a pointer to the incendiary firebrands of "Whole Lotta Shakin'" and "Great Balls Of Fire" etc..
As with the other volumes, a wonderful, informative 72 page booklet is included featuring label depictions of all singles included... both the 'A' & 'B' sides!! This is a typically high standard release from Bear Family and a wonderful complement to the other volumes. It's apparent that Volume 2 is probably the most essential of all the 6 volumes in the series but I couldn't imagine anyone wanting to buy just this volume and not the others. One other nice touch is a picture of Sam Phillips which forms on the spines of the 6 volumes when they are filed together on your shelf (much like the covers of "Beatles Anthology" CD/LP/DVD series).
As a purely historical document, "The Complete Sun Singles Volume 2" is a must for any serious music collector interested in the birth of rock music. If you're like me and just love CD boxed sets then you really should have it.
Sun Records at its best........1998-07-23
"The Complete Sun Singles Volume 2" is the second of six CD sets which collect all the single masters ("A" and "B" sides) released under Sam C. Phillips' Sun and Phillips International record labels. Sun fans should hear every volume in the collection; there's no better way to follow the rise and fall of Phillips' recordings. But for anyone familiar with the handful of Sun/Phillips International hits like "Blue Suede Shoes," "I Walk The Line," "Great Balls of Fire," and "Raunchy," and an interest in hearing more, only a few of the volumes are essential listening.
Volume 2 is the most essential set in the collection. It covers Sun's Golden Years (1955-1957), when Sun was the label that set the musical trends of the future. These trends are heard in the featured hits of Carl Perkins ("Blue Suede Shoes," "Matchbox"), Johnny Cash ("Folsom Prison Blues," "I Walk The Line") and Roy Orbison ("Ooby Dooby"), as well as in the strongest Rockabilly of Billy Riley, Sonn! y Burgess and Warren Smith.
The nature of "The Complete Sun Singles Collection" says it all: if it was released under the Sun or Phillips International label, it will be on one of the collection's six volumes. With that sort of criteria, the listener can expect to hear some songs which would otherwise have no place on any collection, as well as others which ought to appear more frequently (Ernie Chafin's "So Lonesome" is one of the greatest gems on the set!) Volume 2 has the distinction of being the one volume that lacks a forgettable song. The material in this set was recorded during Sun's most innovative and hit-laden period, so it's no surprise that its track listing reads like a Greatest Hits collection. This is the stuff that defined Rock and Roll, and neither the Sun enthusiast nor the listener with a casual interest in Sun recordings should be without "The Complete Sun Singles Volume 2."
