Elliott Yamin's debut is so agreeable and well-executed it may well convert hardened R&B experts--the kind who'd normally distance themselves from a disc with a TV pedigree. With sincerity and a voice that vaults itself to places no talent-show contestant should be able to go, Yamin bares his soul here in a way that would do his hero, Donny Hathaway, proud. Tracks like "Take My Breath Away" and "You Are the One" find him twisting a wrench around love-stained lyrics; "I'm the Man" and "Find A Way" flow with hat-in-hand grace (and, in the case of the latter, a scat worthy of a vintage jazz stage); and opener "Movin' On" immortalizes the season five judges'-table words of Paula Abdul: Ellliott Yamin is "one funky white boy." As he proves with this five-star album, he is also among the most gifted artists ever to a turn a stint on the show into a recording career. --Tammy La Gorce
Customer Reviews:
One Word...Amazing!.......2007-08-04
Elliott Yamin is the best kept secret! I loved him on American Idol and always thought he had the most amazing range of vocals and should have won! I'm delighted his CD is out and every song is better than the next. This is a perfect combination of soul, funk, jazz and easy listening. His songs give me goose bumps and bring me to tears.
I particularly love the song - "One Word"!
Takes my breath away.......2007-08-03
Elliott Yamin was my favorite on season five of "American Idol," which was filled with talented singers. I purchased his debut CD the day it was released. However, I wanted to listen for awhile before writing a review. I definitely liked it when it was first released, but "Elliott Yamin" is a relatively subtle CD that takes a few listens to fully appreciate. The CD tends toward up-tempo ballads and love songs, which is really what Elliott excels as singing. Overall, I think he did a great job at selecting songs that suit his voice and also blend into a cohesive CD.
The first single ("Wait for You") is particularly beautiful and has become a solid hit. The song had a slow start before eventually making it into the top 20 of Billboard's Hot 100. I also enjoy "I'm the Man," which features an atmospheric intro and incredibly catchy chorus. "Free" has somewhat clichéd lyrics, but Elliott's vocals blend with a beautiful piano backing for a real highlight. My final favorite song is "Train Wreck," which is a somewhat bluesy ballad with one of Elliott's most soulful vocals. Elliott also co-wrote "Trainwreck," along with "Movin' On," "Find a Way," "You Are the One," and "Alright." The CD ends with the only remake; of course it had to be Donnie Hathaway's "A Song for You," which was one of the highlights of Elliott's "American Idol" stint.
All in all, Elliott has released a very good debut CD that has obviously pleased most of his fans. I'm enjoying it more than four months after its release. Some listeners might find the focus on ballads a bit tiring, but do yourself a favor and listen to the CD for awhile before judging it.
Not up to hopes.......2007-08-02
I was realy excited to get this cd, as I felt Elliott should have won American Idol. However, I don't think the songs were well chosen to showcase his talent and many of the songs arrangements overshadowed his dynamic vocal capabilities. I have listened to it twice and not been tempted to listen again.
Great Talent........2007-08-02
When I first heard him sing, I knew that he would win American Idol. But he didn't have the so-call look. Each song can hold it's on against some of the music out there now. I hope that his cd doesn't get lost like I've seen so many do. I pray that on his second cd that he works with stronger producers. Give this cd a try and you'll see what I mean.
Impressive debut!.......2007-07-30
I admit it, I watch the show. I've watched it from about mid-way season 1. This is the first time I've felt compelled to write a review. Elliott's voice and genuine feeling captured me, no question. I don't care about his mother (sorry), I don't care about his diabetes, or his deafness (again, sorry--I know other people care about this kind of stuff, but I don't). He has a voice that fills me up!! I don't know a more eloquent way to say it, and for that, I apologize. But, his voice makes me joyous!
Some of the songs on this CD felt a little lacking at first, but just let Elliott overwhelm you with his feeling--and believe me he will. He takes these songs--some of them average, some impressive--he takes them to a different level. He's shown it here, give him better songs, and he will hit them outta the field! Honestly, I can't wait to see what he does next.

Tank, on Sex, Love & Pain, is like Luther Vandross only slightly lewder: He'll be the first to admit, as he does on the three-part opening track "Coldest," that he's "somewhat of a hustler out here on the street... occasional strip clubs and shots of Hennessy." That doesn't stop him from laying his heart on the line, though. Repeatedly. Midtempo grooves like "I'm Coming Home," a hopeful reunion song, and "Heartbreaker," a limber-voiced lament that outlines a crumbled relationship, show Tank's tender side and take the romantically inclined places more real-seeming than Luther's songs. Throughout the long lineup of love-gone-wrong tracks, the brawny guy with the tattooed back doesn't forget his playful side, either. Before Timbaland sidles up and gets closing track "I Love Them Girls" all trademark-sizzly, Tank does some titillating of his own via the sexed-up steamer "My Body." --Tammy La Gorce

Very aesy on the ear.......2007-08-06
This is by far Tank's best contribution thus far. The songs are well composed and the vocal perfomance is outstanding. The harmonies on the slow jams are expertly done and look out for tracks 3, 8 and 9 especially.

I personally really like this cd. This brother has a very soulful voice. My only issue is why he's always singing about a man losing a good woman after the fact. I mean, I can appreciate what he's trying to say..But, damn..make an album that says what a brother can do to keep her before he loses her. lol
I play this cd alot. Definitely a nice cd to play with a nice glass of wine and good company. lol
SOLID.......2007-07-25
Okay - for any of you that don't know... Tank is the most underrated male R&B singer in the game. Granted - he's making his dough... he's working with the Underdogs, and penned most of Jamie Foxx's album - Unpredictable and wrote Ruben Studdard's "Change Me"... the man is a musical genius. He's the kind of guy you want to have in the studio doing the vocal arrangements; they're so layered and rich. The brotha is doing it major on his junior release.
I don't know many brothas that can sing with as much emotion and range as Tank. Hands down, other than Joe and Eric Benet, Tank is what the game needs more of. Like I've heard one person say already - this my generation is into the catchy young hip-hop layered beat with these simple hooks. I'm cool with it, but people don't sing anymore. I mean - there is no distinction between most young artist, and few of them have longevity in the game. Tank shows versatility, range, and style by jumping the cd off like I haven't heard since 112 at their prime. I mean, the opening track shows you some crazy vocals. No offense to the otha brothas - but I have yet to pop in a Chris Brown, Lloyd, Marques Houston, Omarion, or WHOEVER's CD and been wowed by the vocals talent and depth. I've heard many people do their songs better than it was recorded... and Tank doesn't even give you a chance - many people try and fail horribly.. LOL!
My personal favorites are: "Coldest","My Body" "Please Don't Go", "Heartbreaker", and "When"
There is one part that upsets me about this - I was mad that Blackground didn't take the time to separate the Intro - which is BEASTLY. I mean Tank opens up w/fire reminiscent of when people did interludes. He also reaches some ungodly note when he segways into "Heartbreaker" (which also should've had a interlude to it). The unfortunate thing about it was Joe had a banging CD and Musiq did as well... not to mention Trey Songz and Mario are also highly anticipated projects. So this year for male R&B singer - he has competition. I think that if Tank worked with some other producers and really diversified his CD and made it one of those albums that you can't skip a song, he would be in there! He gets 3 stars alone off of his talent! And another star because of some beast "interludes" and infectuous melodies of some of his songs. It's a solid CD - I haven't taken it out of the disc changer since I got it... It's worth tha money!
R & B is back.......2007-07-19
Wonderful cd. Listened to it 3 times in a row. Im glad he's back. Songs are very well written, kind of reminds me of Jaheim "Ghetto Love" CD.

On Street Love, Lloyd packs in the urban-tough reputation he was going for on 2004's Southside and becomes, unmistakably, a sweetie. His heart beats for two on "Valentine." He whispers candy-coated nothings on the title track. And by the time we're nine songs in, the man has sunk, love-scorched, to his knees. Which turns out to be a pretty great position for him to make a record from, actually. Lloyd's shift to the soft side on this well-executed sophomore set will cause the inevitable comparisons to the reigning king of all R&B love-song crooners, Usher. But it shouldn't. Mr. Polite, as the well-acquainted call him, is a different sort of singer entirely: sub out the realistic, realtionshippy lyrics for something sensational, and he could be Michael Jackson. That he chooses to hang his songs on relatable scenes (like "Killing Me," at the club) gives us a glimmer of what a street-loving, lady-killing Michael might have sounded like. And then the disc adds a little more: the soul-leaning joint "Hazel" hints at stylistic leaps to come, and "I Want You (remix)," with Andre 3000 and Nas, is as satisfying a kicker as we've seen in 2007. --Tammy La Gorce

music lover.......2007-07-12
I must say with the slump that R&B is in Lloyd's cd was refreshing. He did an excellent job on this album..nice flow..all the songs are real nice. My favorites are "Valentine" and "One for me" using the art of noise for that track was hot!! ..I recommend this cd to music lovers..
Sexy, soul with a little street flair..........2007-07-09
Lloyd did a great job on this album, he mixes street hip-hop beats with a nice smooth, mellow sound. Reminds me so much of a young Michael Jackson...almost a little TOO much. But, it's still great. The Hazel song is about weed...LOL. Like that one, like Valentine, You, Get it Shawty...he's got some hot songs on here. I think any girl would love to have this in her collection to ride to in the whip.
he has really grown alot on this one.......2007-06-30
he did a really good job of balancing his style of singing with hip hop, traditional r&b, and the newer stylings of r&b. much better than his first cd.
Pleasantly Surprised.......2007-06-28
I'm new to this artist. But after I heard the "You" remix with 3000 and Nas, I figured, why not just buy it, and I'm glad I did. I was blown away! His vocals, subject matters, and dance tracks are outstanding. And, although he is a "youngen" (as we call them in my hood), he comes with a (very) mature approach; especially tracks 5, 8, and 11. Even the CD title perfectly fits the music this artist has created. This CD is in heavy rotation in my house.
Even Better The Second Time Around!.......2007-06-26
This is definitely a welcome surprise coming from this young cat who used to rep for his label Murder Inc to the fullest (he's now reportedly managed by Sho Nuff Entertainment with an eventual move to Jazze Pha's label in the coming year or so). And with that came a sudden switch in his musical styling, resorting more on down-to-earth ballads with a charming quality behind them instead of the rough and tough image that was basically ingrained into him. And even though the new CD is called Street Love, it isn't nearly as 'hood' as other recent offerings in the R&B market. His breakout single "You" with Lil Wayne got the kind of buzz most artists wish they could pull off on a sophomore effort. "Get It Shawty" is grimy enough for the younger crowd, but catchy enough for the club crowd to enjoy. "Incredible" will make you immediately compare Lloyd to Michael Jackson, but thankfully his charisma is more believable over an edgier urban beat than most of the futile attempts by the King of Pop. Other standouts have to be "Certified," "I Don't Mind," and "Player's Prayer" (the latter is a serious contender for the next single). "Killing Me" and "Valentine" both revert back to early M.J., "Streetlove" sounds suspiciously like "Promise" by Ciara but still delivers nonetheless, and "Hazel" uses a unique storytelling approach for the lyrics (and makes the name Hazel sound a lot better than Gertrude!). He closes out the album with "One For Me" which uses the beat from the infamous "Moments In Love" beat from Art of Noise, and Andre 3000 and Nas put it down for the "You" remix. Lloyd has his eye on the prize, and the magnetism of Street Love will certainly keep everybody looking at the rising superstar for years to come.

She's no stranger to the towering highs and lows of the heart, and Etta James's soaring, gospel-tinged pipes match up well with the rigors of unabashed bliss. Happily, the good people at Chess Records recognize this, and they have thoughtfully collected some of the best examples into one tidy record. Kicking off with her classic treatment of "At Last," the collection moves through the lilting strings of "My Dearest Darling" on into the expressive tones of "I Want to Be Loved (But Only by You)" with grace and emotional candor. James can be simultaneously tender and deeply honest and her ability to express the desperate joy that is the soul of love remains one of life's marvelous pleasures. --Matthew Cooke
Customer Reviews:
THE LADY CAN SING.......2007-07-15
When Etta James starts to sing the world stands still and your heart skips a beat. What a voice this lady had. I am very thankful to have this music as it can transform an ordinary day into a fantastic mood of love and happiness. When she sings At Last or Sunday King of Love my heart smiles and her smooth blues make me sings too. She makes music way more than just sound. Thanks
New Edge to "Old" Love Songs.......2007-07-07
For years I have said that even though Etta James did not have many "Top Ten" hits on the charts, she is the best interpreter of other singers' songs, the best who ever lived and sang on a New Orleans or a Chicago stage or bar stool. She takes every song she sings and makes it all new and all Etta. She is the single most important reason I became a fan of the blues _ _ _ years ago. You get the picture? I am an old lady and am an old fan.
She's been through many years of problems and heartache, but then, here she still is, with a voice that is even better (if that's possible!) than when she was a sweet young thing performing with Louie Armstrong, Ray Charles, BB King and all the great band leaders and blues singers. She even has a new thin physique!
A couple of the tunes are ones she had in her regular repertoire forty-five years ago and others are contemporary hits from other artists. Each one is "pure Etta." I seem to play this one over and over and over. I can't get enough. I even have it on my computer so I can listen to it when I am doing other work!
This CD is a great example of what the blue are and the influence it can have on all kinds of music. Some of the tunes one will hardly recognize at first. And--the best part of this recording is that you don't have to be in love to enjoy it! (though it wouldn't be bad that way, too)
Etta.......2007-05-30
Great songs and some very sensual! Perfect for a romantic dinner at home with candles.....
Gets better each time.......2007-04-02
This is one of those CD's that just keeps getting better with familiarity. Etta really puts her heart and soul into each song. I bought it for "At Last" but now love all the songs on it. It sounds like my old 45's, but in a good way.

Amazon.com essential recording
Four years after her return to recording after a much-publicized battle with drug addiction, Natalie Cole found herself unexpectedly experiencing a virtual reinvention as a bestselling artist and performer, thanks to a project she had longed to do for many years. Unforgettable with Love was the soulful singer's way of paying tribute to her late, legendary father, Nat "King" Cole, and marked her label debut for Elektra Records. Cole, Elektra, and the album's producers--including then-husband Andre Fischer and Tommy LiPuma--were rewarded with a multiple-Grammy-winning set that sold an astonishing 5 million copies in the U.S. alone. Cole's selections varied from obvious choices like "Mona Lisa," "Nature Boy," "Route 66," and "Straighten Up and Fly Right"--all major hits for her father in the '50s--to more obscure parts of King Cole's repertoire, such as "Avalon" and "Non Dimenticar." The crowning glory was a "duet" with her father, electronically created using his original vocal, which helped expand Cole's audience dramatically and took her career to a new plateau. --David Nathan
Customer Reviews:
The apple most definitely doesn't fall far from the tree!.......2007-06-20
If one were to fill a MUSICAL time capsule, then "Unforgettable: With Love" would be placed in it. Not only is the album does the album pay tribute to one of the all-time greats of music, Cole's father Nat, but it is a multiple Grammy-winner that appealed to fans of many genres.
Cole is very effective singing the standards made famous by her father and realizes that his stamp is emblazoned on most of them. She never tries to imitate him, just offers her own spin on such gems as "Mona Lisa," "Smile," "Straighten Up and Fly Right," "Nature Boy," and "Our Love is Here to Stay."
Of course, no musical collection would be complete without the landmark and one-of-a-kind (at the time) pairing of father and daughter on "Unforgettable."
The song is just as the title says and worthy of the praise it has garnered since its release.
I can't believe that I didn't buy this album sixteen years ago.
Where was my brain???
Unforgettable.......2006-12-03
Natalie Cole celebrates her father's legacy by singing his songs on this flawlessly produced album. The quality of the music is excellent and Natalie's voice is warm, fresh and vibrant. She performs so well that one listen is never enough: This is a CD you listen to over and over again.
The CD starts off with the romantic "The Very Thought Of You;" this simultaneously suggests that Natalie is thinking of her father as she introduces the CD with this first song. The next two songs, "Paper Moon" and "Route 66" pick up the pace somewhat and Natalie does these songs to perfection.
Other great songs on this album include the Oscar winning, haunting ballad entitled "Mona Lisa;" the playful and joyous love song simply entitled "L-O-V-E;" "Smile," a Charlie Chaplin classic; a guy's romance song called "That Sunday That Summer;" the medley of "For Sentimental Reasons/Tenderly/Autumn Leaves;" "Our Love Is Here To Stay" and the closing grand finale, "Unforgettable," which features Natalie singing this as a duet with her late father using electronic mixing equipment.
The overall effect on your soul is guaranteed to be incredible. I also like the fact there are some of Nat King Cole's lesser known songs including "Avalon."
Look for David "Fathead" Newman to do a great sax solo on "Tenderly" and "Autumn Leaves;" Joe Sample plays piano on "Paper Moon" and "Orange Colored Sky." Great!
The liner notes include an informative essay by Roy Trakin who gets help from Natalie in her own words all along the way; and there are interesting black and white photographs of Natalie with her family when she was a young child. The liner notes also provide the song credits and there's a whopping four pages of acknowledgements and "thank yous."
This is one classy show.
I highly recommend this CD for fans of classic pop vocals, fans of Natalie Cole and fans of Nat King Cole; fans of pop R&B and even fans of R&B/Soul.
ENJOY!!!
What everyone should listen to before entering dreamland.......2006-11-06
As a jazz musician, fan and admirer of Natalie's stunning talent, this CD is one of my favorites from the day it was released. We started playing it at my baby son's bedside at night and, to this day, this has not changed. He is now almost five and the sweet, soulful, timeless classics Ms. Cole so elegantly gives us carries my son off to sleep every night. A night without Natalie is a night without dreams. THANK YOU, Natalie and Daddy Cole, for your gifts you have shared with us. I'm now ordering THREE more copies. (Grand daughters!)
Heart & Soulful.......2006-08-29
Natalie Cole put a lot of heartfelt warmth into this collection of songs. Recording this collection must have brought back a lot of wonderful memories of her father, Nat King Cole.
Tender yet soulful, Natalie Cole brings us an updated collection of her father's songs from the 50's that he would have been proud of. For anyone who loves all of those great standards, this is a must for your collection. Natalie brings her own polished style to each one of these classics.
The opener "The Very Thought Of Your" is a sweeping ballad. "Smile" is a grand tribute. "Lush Life" is just that.....lush! "Avalon"s uptempo arrangement is the perfect backdrop for Natalie's vocal. "Nature Boy" is tenderly sweet. The duet of Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole is a classic that will live on forever.

MUSIC 101 FOR YOUNG "MAROONS".......2006-03-19
From the dreamy, shimmering strings that open this album, to the unforgettable duet between Papa Cole and his talented daughter, Natalie, which closes it, 'UNFORGETTABLE: WITH LOVE' is a gorgeous example of recorded art. It's hard for me to believe that anyone with any musical sense could still be unfamiliar with this hugely popular set, but if you are that someone, then STRAIGHTEN UP AND FLY RIGHT: Get your copy today because it's ALMOST LIKE BEING IN LOVE!
Aside from Natalie Cole's expressive and clear as a Tiffany's crystal water glass vocals, the success of this album lies in Tommy LiPuma's production which flawlessly blends romantic ballads with flat-out joyous Swing numbers, and the updated arrangements of Nat King Cole's hits of decades past, primarily provided by Andre Fischer, Bill Holman, and the deeply soulful Johnny Mandel.
But returning to Natalie's voice: My, oh my, was this gal ever turned on by the concept of this emotional project. On the love ballads, her seductive voice takes you by the hand and pulls you down softly into a gently swaying field of clover and fragrant lavender (e.g., THE VERY THOUGHT OF YOU; OUR LOVE IS HERE TO STAY; and my favorite, THAT SUNDAY THAT SUMMER). But that voice of hers is just as capable of kicking you right in the seat of the pants when it soars through the atmosphere on the energetic Swing tunes that blast off like rockets to distant galaxies! Crank up ORANGE COLORED SKY, AVALON, ALMOST LIKE BEING IN LOVE, and THOU SWELL. You think your favorite "Alternative" band rocks harder? Think again! Yeah, it's driven by horns instead of electric guitars, but it's the same intensity, just far superior musicianship. Now you know why this Hard Rock junkie from the 1970s eventually turned to Jazz instead.
And speaking of instrumentalists: You've got Ray Brown on bass; Joe Sample on piano; Chuck Findley on trumpet; and Pete Christlieb and David "Fathead" Newman on saxophones. Folks, these are some of the best in the business!
And as if all this wasn't enough, you've got the beautifully haunting and philosophical, NATURE BOY on this set - a song that contains the poignant lyric that actually offers the true meaning of life: "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to Love and be Loved in return."
HEY YOU! Yeah you - the doofus with the baseball cap on sideways and the untied shoelaces dragging on the ground (Gomer Pyle was the first guy to wear a cap sideways, and you look every bit as "cool" as he did).
You think "music" goes KA-THUMP!...KA-THUMP!...KA-THUMP!...KA-THUMP!? Wrong, dude. Sit down and give Natalie Cole a listen with your girlfriend beside you - the one with the gold bar through her eyebrow and the tattoo on her chest. (Man! She's uglier and more masculine looking than an AWOL sailor on a two-week binge!) This is what a soul sista with REAL talent can do, kiddies! (If I'm right, does it really matter that I'm also a music dogmatist?)
Recording her versions of her Dad's standards on 'UNFORGETTABLE: WITH LOVE' was obviously a very sentimental project for Natalie; the album tugs at my heartstrings, too. It was a birthday gift from my Ma (may she rest in Peace), and it contains the bittersweet, SMILE - the first song my Pa used to get my attention while he was "dying" in the hospital. Since his "death", he has contacted me innumerable times by using the music of Nat King Cole. (No, your loved ones don't really "die", and yes, they can reach you if you're paying attention with Faith.)
Accompanying the CD is a booklet with 8 neat photos and extensive liner notes that include Natalie's lovely acknowledgment of God's blessings in her life. [*Very cool, Cole!] I'd have given this album 5 Stars, but the great music comes to an end every seventy-three minutes and fifteen seconds.

The perfect timing of Beyonce Knowles' career moves continues with the release of her debut solo album. Dangerously in Love's best music is wildly up-to-date, craftily designed for both maximum street acceptance and positioning as some of the most cutting-edge stuff on current radio. The brash first single, "Crazy in Love," melds Jay-Z with an unstoppable Chi-Lites horn sample, shape-shifting into something brand new. Collaborations with Outkast's Big Boi and Sean Paul also prick up the ears, while changes of pace like "Be with You" and "Speechless" achieve their aim with credibility. The disc becomes far too ballad heavy in its second half, but the key stuff is the noise she brings. --Rickey Wright

DAM GOOD!!!! .....No matter what , some of the other reviewers have to say!!.......2007-06-08
If you only like her up beat songs like crazy in love, you do not appreciate her as an artist!. On this cd for me 10/15 tracks are good example, Yes... some people would not think mush of as it is not great song writing but sometimes simple things can work!. I think that is one of the reasons R&B is in the bad state it is in today, as all these record company's want from their artist is to write songs about the same old topics because they think that is what will sell and they brain wash the world into thinking like them,(starting with the teens as these topics are more or less new to them and they forget that people gow up and by the time they get to their late 20't 30't they are fed up of these same topics, especially if they are into the old R&B also) so that is all most people want and other more creative songs, will never be considered to be released as singles, keeping today's R&B down in the rubbish bin. One other example of this (a little better song writing on this one) is Signs, different! new! a great song!( I know of Tyrese's signs, good also).
The other tracks most people know... Be With You, Me Myself And I, Baby Boy, Naughty Girl, Dangerously In Love and Work It Out, more or less in order of quality, bonnie and Clyde with JayZ are all good songs, making this cd a must have.
mixed reviews, I'll give it a 3.5.......2007-04-27
crazy in love, baby boy and naughty girl are the big dance numbers on this album and all 3 were huge hits in 2003 and 2004, but you won't find the rest of the album sounding like those 3 songs. The rest is full of ballads and mid tempo r&b tracks, only 4 to 5 of which I truly enjoy including me myself & I, daddy, be with you, signs, speechless and of course dangerously in love, which originally appeared on the destiny's child survivor album.
If you're a fan of beyonce, I guess you will enjoy this album a lot, but I prefer the B'day album so much more, I can listen to that from start to finish without getting bored, while with this CD I can't sit through the whole thing though the songs I do love are well done.
3 1/2 Stars...Not Great But Better Than B'day.......2007-03-16
I was very anxious about getting this album but it didn't meet up to all the hype it was getting. The best tracks are the ballads "Speechless & "The Closer I Get To You", "Crazy In Love". It was nothing incredible but not a complete disappointment. She's alot better in the group with the material that's presented on the albums especially Destiny Fulfilled. Don't bother with B'day, it only has 10 tracks and doesn't pay to have an album that doesn't live up to the hype.
2nd time buying.......2007-01-10
I played the first one so much, I had to buy it again.
Dangerously in love is still my favorite.
Thanks B.
I love this CD, but B'Day is better!.......2007-01-07
Beyonce's debut "Dangerously In Love" is amazing. I love "Crazy In Love", and for the rest of the album it is great. But the beat is digital, and it's like Pop music and Beyonce has a R&B/Soul voice, and on her "B'Day" album she shows her vocal talents and I love it!

Italian Amercans--a must buy.......2007-07-28
As an USAF Air Attaché, I played this music at many a dinner party with a surprising amount of interest and positive comments from my foreign colleagues--often asking for copies of the music.
As a child of the 60's, these songs resurrected long-lost memories of great Italian music that was at one-time almost prevalent in the entertainment industry. I am proud that our culture produced these great songs, hope you are too! I still often listen to this music at dinner while enjoying a glass of great Italian wine.

I bought this CD because I missed listening to the music my grandfather played. This CD brought back a flood of memories for me. Wonderful compilation of my favorite italian classics.

This is more cafe style but still worth listening to.
Great dinner background music.
This CD will put you to sleep.......2007-02-26
We bought this CD for our daughter's wedding. After reviewing it, we could have saved our money. The version of Funiculi sounded like the Salvation Army band and it was totally lifeless. Lou Monte's Hey Gumbaree (it is actually Eh Cumpare in Italian--that should have given it away) was awful, and he consistently butchers the Italian language in all his other songs (annoying, I mean, couldn't he have learned the right pronunciation?).
While Perry Como and others have melodic voices (and very wisely sing in English because they don't know Italian), these are '50s versions of the songs, for the most part. While you have to appreciate them, they are really old and reflect the '50s type of instrumention and style. Would have loved to have heard all these songs done in a fresh and original way. Soldi Soldi was our favorite by far, and that is why we gave the CD two stars.
Could have gone to the library for this one.
Thanks for letting me voice our opinion. We are a big Italian family and just spent hundreds of dollars buying every CD out there for our daughter's wedding and figured we would share our opinion with others.

This is the album on which Aretha finds her voice. She'd previously recorded for another label, but this Atlantic debut created the sound that has come to define her. The tracks read like a greatest hits collection: "Respect," "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man," "Dr. Feelgood," "Baby, Baby, Baby," "A Change Is Gonna Come," and the title track. She's alternately pumped full of soul or scraping her inner being to find more. A classic. --Robert Gordon
Customer Reviews:
FOREVER ARETHA, FOREVER THE QUEEN OF SOUL.......2007-03-08
If you don't have this CD in your collection, you are truly missing a treasure. With this CD, we see "Aretha" bringing the "fervor" of gospel music to the world of circular music in a way that no other African-American musical artist has done with the exception of Ray Charles and James Brown. She is unapologetic as she lets her voice soar to a spiritual place that can only be reached by someone who's church upbringing is as much a part of her being as the water she drinks and the air she breaths. You will "go to church" when you hear her sing Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come" and the song that has become every woman's anthem, "Respect".
On this CD, Aretha not only defines Rhythmn and Blues; she also defines her version of the Blues. Her Blues is not the Blues of Big Mama Thorton, KoKo Taylor, or Etta James. Aretha's Blues doesn't try to compete or "rock" like a man's Blues. Aretha's Blues is a woman's Blues--smart, sassy, pleading, proud, and defiant all at the same time. One gets to feel it all when she belts out "I Never Loved A Man the Way I Love You," "Soul Serenade," and "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man".
And the piano playing--yes, that's Aretha--that pure syncopated gospel style that many church going African Americans take for granted on any given Sunday morning.
Add this body of work to your Aretha collection. You won't have the blues for long and you will come to understand what it means to "go to church."
Soul is a Serious Business - and She's Got it Down!.......2007-02-23
Yeah, I've always been a fan of Aretha's. But I gained a new appreciation for her upon hearing this soul landmark. It's seriously up there with those Sly Stone and Stevie Wonder classics. She is, simply, the ultimate soul singer, with the ultimate soul anthem to her credit: Respect. She took the Otis Redding song and gave it quite the makeover. Sure, Otis' version is great, but this one puts it and any other covers of it to shame and back. The rest of the album lives in Respect's shadow, but there's lots more to like about it: the bluesy title track, for one, as well as moving versions of Do-Right Woman, Do-Right Man and Sam Cooke's oft-covered A Change is Gonna Come. Speaking of covers, I love her versions of Drown in My Own Tears and Good Times. Sure, both are overrecorded, but Aretha somehow gives them personality. And Dr. Feelgood has to be her most underrated. Even a few of the minor tracks (Soul Serenade; Baby, Baby, Baby, Save Me) would've led the way on a lesser album.
Be sure to buy this. I know that most consider soul a more singles-based genre than an album-based one, but there are quite a few good soul LP's out there that deserve the same recognition as the '60's rock classics. This is one of them.
One Of The All Time Best.......2007-02-15
A definite CLASSIC, and I do not use that word loosely. Bought this album when it first came out, and now own the CD. It is timeless. If you like music, any music, then you owe it to yourself to own this record!!! Don't think twice, just buy it.....
Timeless soul diamond.......2007-01-13
Worth checking out on the merit of transcendent hit "Respect" alone, "I Never Loved A Man The Way I Loved You" is one of my favorite soul albums for three main reasons: Aretha's voice, of course, the ripping backing band she's got, and the songs.
Anyone with a radio has probably heard Aretha belt out "Respect" and other hits, but checking out an entire album really enhanced my appreciation of her remarkable voice. Her range and power are extraordinary, and to think of her pounding the keys while singing out her anguish and happiness really makes the album magic. Her lively wailing on "Drown in My Own Tears" is soaked in authenticity, and her sultry readings of the title track and "Dr. Feelgood" make it a surprisingly steamy affair. It's great to hear Aretha pour her sweat, heart, and guts into these songs and hear the soft, hard, fiery and sweet sounds her voice is capable of.
The backing band is tight and spot on--there's some really gnarly blues guitar, for instance, on the title track, and "Save Me" doesn't drop a funk-soaked beat. Throughout the whole album, the saxes and brass shine and accentuate the spaces between Aretha's confessions, illustrating the soul truth that simple is powerful. The background singers also help support Aretha's power with soft harmonies (like on the jazzy "Don't Let Me Lose This Dream").
Last, the songs are stupendous. Not only does Franklin conquer Otis Redding's "Respect" and cut the definitive version, she also reimagines Sam Cooke's "Good Times" and gives the man a run for his money on her tender reading of "A Change is Gonna Come." Along the way, she also manages to make soul classics out of a few other songwriters' tunes ("Do Right Woman") AND co-write some soul classics of her very own. Serious business indeed.
I love this CD and listen to it all the time--no matter how radio-overplayed "Respect" is, this album still glitters with the magic that created it and remains part of the bedrock of my modest soul collection.
Heart and Soul.......2007-01-10
It's a bautiful record, from the best aretha's atlantic period. It's one of the most important r'n'b records of all times...Any more words are not required!!

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeexcellent!!!.......2007-07-02
Quite honestly, I had always preferred to hear Phil do a guest spot every now and then on an established jazz artist's project, i.e. George Duke, David Benoit, Dave Grusin, Lee Ritenour to name a few. He generally gave an effective reading of the song in question but had this tendency to go over the top sometimes.
Not the case here, folks.
This is by far one of Phil's very best projects successfully blending R&B with top-notch jazz musicians. The musicians are quite simply impeccable which complement Phil's controlled, soulful, and soothing vocals. His renditions of "Might Love", "Ride Like the Wind", "The World Is A Ghetto", "Everything Must Change" are all alone worth the price of admission!!! You should also check out his "Classic Love Songs" and the project immediately before this. His treatments of such standards here are equally impressive.
Phil definitely breathes new light into standards elevating them from mere elevator music to a listening experience that is most worthy of sophisticated music collections. It also appears that Phil has finally found his niche. Instead of trying to snatch a sale with futile (and unnecessary) attempts at reaching a hip-hop audience, he has aligned himself with some of the finest jazz musicians around to create an excellent set which would nicely translate into a wonderful live show!
I HIGHLY recommend!
A valid and pleasant album........2007-06-28
The power and beauty of Phil Perry's voice shine on this selection of classics especially on the Spinners' "Mighty Love" and a breathtaking take of "If You Don't Know Me By Now"..
On ballads like Tony Braxton's "Unbreak MY Heart" and Smokey Robinson's "Just To See Her", Phil Perry combines the delicate yet passionate vocal with SOUL.
A worthy successor to his first album of covers in the series The Classic Love Songs.
It's a valid and pleasant album that will appeal to both Soul and R&B fans.
Only a dash too predictable.

Being from Philly, I was able to see them in concert at the Five Spot
(Black Lily) and was blown away by the two of them. Their music is welcoming, it's peaceful and soulful. I asked her to perform "Stars" for me and my husband. It was unbelievable. Every Tuesday their band would head to the stage and the rest is as they say history.
Thanks Kindred
GROWN FOLK MUSIC.......2007-03-13
This husband and wife team is just awesome. The band and background singers are superb as well. One of my favorite cuts is "Stars", which is lush, sexy and just plain old beautiful. I would want my husband to feel that way about me!!! Ursual Rucker the diva griot does her thing and does it well on the cut "We", exhorting togetherness which is like the song says a beautiful thing. I even like the intro with Ryva and her british lilt! My favorite song is "I AM" which is so girl power and motivating. Go get this album because it is worth while.
