A good anthology of "Cheatin'" Soul ballads from the 1970s........2006-12-06

During the first half of the 1970s,"cheatin'" songs (mostly ballads) were a fixture in the Soul music world. This superb compilation features songs that deal with adultery, its consequences and the viewpoints from those involved in such affairs. Shirley Brown, James Carr, Isaac Hayes, Phillip Mitchell, Lloyd Price, Candi Staton, Millie Jackson, The Soul Children and others sing truly convincing (and at times heart-wrenching) tales of love, lust, longing, desire and heartbreak--all of which remain relevant to this very day. Listen with an open mind--and without judgment--and you are sure to enjoy a rarely anthologized side of the classic Soul ballad from singers who knew what they were singing about. The booklet essay is also very informative and most tracks' sound quality is excellent.

This excellent collection is a sister compilation to the recent Dirty Laundry country-soul set, this time focusing on the classic Southern soul tradition of 'cheating' songs. The full range of the ethical spectrum is covered here, from the predatory adulterousness of Ann Peebles's 'Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody's Home' through the other-woman misgivings of Doris Duke's 'If She's Your Wife (You`re Just a Friend)'; and from the bullish protective instinct of Clarence Carter, defending his territory in 'What Was I Supposed to Do?', to the angry desolation of Bobby Blue Bland on the classic 'I Wouldn't Treat a Dog (the Way You Treated Me)'. The standard is high throughout, with two cuts apiece from headliners like Bland, Joe Tex and OV Wright, and one-off gems from the likes of Sandra Phillips, Janet and The Jays, and Ruby Andrews. Kandi is one of my favorite singers ever. When she came out with her hit "Don't Think I'm Not", I knew I had to have her CD. I was in Wal-Mart one day and noticed Kandi's CD single for the song "Cheatin' On Me", which then I had never heard before.I purchased the CD right away! I like Tracks 1,2, and 3. The original vesion(Track 5) is OK, but tracks 1,2, and 3 are all remixes. One thing about Kandi is she usually sings about her men cheatin' on her.

This is really an awesome track. It almost makes me think that the guy needs to limit the tracks on his CD. I mean to much 50 Cent is a Bad, BAD thing, I mean it is nearly impossible to not like this track. 50 and Kandi work well together and the song begins to show another side to 50 Cent showing that the thug has a heart and he isn't just this Emotionless Beast that he gives himself off to be throughout his CD's. This is one of the best songs that 50 Cent has ever had. It is a great addition to basically any CD that 50 has/will come out with. If this is the future of 50 Cent then I wouldn't be as worried as I am right now as he is one of the worst underground rappers that I have ever heard. And the misfortune is that he is also one of the most popular ones that people think are up and coming, the guy needs to tkae a lesson or two from the guy that he continues to diss and maybe he would be a worthy rapper that more people would actually like instead of syaing "Who?" when they heard it. A couple of my friends are casual listeners and this is like the only song that they have heard from 50, it is like his second best in my opinion. Well I reccomend picking up the single but definately not the CD that it's on!
