This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The volume is a little low, but all the songs are great nonetheless. I am really in love with track number 6 "the only one" followed by penny lover. Those two are my all time favorites!

No Need To Slow Down.......2007-02-10

Lionel Richie ex. Commodores had archieved great success with his eponumous debut album in 1982 and even experienced two solo #1 hits, "Endless Love" a duet with Diana Ross (which didn't appear on his debut) and then "Truly". There was no need to slow down at all and the year after this fantastic album was released. Lionel continues with the same kind of music, but now he does it better and smarter then ever. This album is well calculated with a great production and all singles seems to be exactly on point with good hooks and arrangements. Even if it's calculated to work for the charts, there are a few diffrent numbers here that shows a new side of Richies music., I'm talking about the Countryish "Stuck on You", the mega hit "All Night Long" with world Beat sound, simular to what Michael Jackson did on "Wanna Be Starting Something" and Madonna later did on "La Isla Bonita". Exotic pop songs that didn't sound like anything else on the charts at the time. The song topped the Billboard charts in 1983. The third song that comes to mind is the rock-pop hit "Running With the Night", not as edgy as MJ but not far from. Two more fantastic songs should be mentioned as highlights "Penny Lover" a midtempo love song and obviously the massive ballad hit "Hello" with a blind girl in the video. It topped both charts of the atlantic and was one of the biggest hits of that year. "Can't Slow Down" is a decent midtempo with great arrangements but lacks a good hook and was no single. Neither were the dry ballad "Love Will Find A Way" nor "The Only One" another ballad. Out of only 8 songs 5 were hits, which is quite amazing. Just like another reviewer mentioned, This is probably the best Pop album of 1983 and it made Lionel Richie a superstar. It got something for everyone and it's fullpacked with memorable hits that rocked the music charts in the early 80's. Just like the previous album Lionel also wrote all songs. Unfortunately some of the songs are too long. "All Night Long" really is all night, since it's 6.30 minutes and goes on forever. Shorting down some of the songs and adding a few more would have been better then having songs that never ends. However, this album shows Lionel at his peak when everything he made was a hit and I warmly recommend this to people that like good music and want a classic pop album in their collection.

I was born in spring 1983 and by the time I was a year or two old I discovered lionel's songs all night long, hello & penny love thanks to my parents playing them. This is a great album to own. It's short and sweet, and as one reviewer stated, THE PERFECT answer to Thriller, which is also great to play back to back with this album.

"The only one" is one of my favorite songs of all time. "All night long" and "Stuck on you" are really gorgeous. But I can't stand "Hello", it's too silly!

Excellent performer.......2007-03-09

This plates are wonderful. I was charmed, and when I close my eyes now, I see scenes with American in Paris or Porgy and Bess but my favorite piece of music is Rhapsody in Blue. It's more than excellent is fantastic. Jack Gibbons perfectly feels the unique tone Gershwin's music, the mixture rythms of jazz with influences of impressionists and clear and beauty melodies.
I'm fascinating.

A unique project.......2006-11-23

Gibbons' undertaking is unique: to reconstruct and then execute and record the note-for-note playing of Gershwin as documented on the composers' piano rolls, sound recordings and certain published arrangements. I agree with the reviewer who points out that the result is like a library and not a recital you sit back and listen to (or get up and dance to). In fact Gibbons does some editing of his "library" now and then, and clearly documents it in his liner notes: in some reconstructions he augments accompaniment effects and even the melodic line itself. I don't mind that at all, especially as Gibbons scrupulously accounts for such tampering in his liner notes; but it seems to me that it is in this area of "tampering" that Gibbons the artist is asserting himself...which of course undermines the "library", the "historical archive": you have to search and read a bit to find out when you're hearing only Gershwin and when you're hearing some added Gibbons. I don't mind; Gibbons is a remarkable artist in his own right, not merely an impeccable documentarian. For sheer generosity of production Gibbons' Gershwin must also be unique: 4 cd's, scholar-level liner notes (yes, you need a magnifying glass to read them), and rock-bottom bargain price.

Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12

First: this is 4 high-end produced cd's (in low-end jewel cases) for the price of 2. The liner notes of all 4 cd's are condensed in a booklet of microscopic print, so you may need to spend the savings on a magnifying glass. MONEY WELL SPENT.
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.

Here's the whole Gershwin catalog at a great price... Five plus hours of bliss. Definately five stars!

Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

Still not through being cool.......2006-05-17

Whoever is below me and said Dave and Ted's song writing is at its best is actually incorrect. Ted and Dave debuted on through being cool, Anthony Anastacio and Justin Gaylord were the guitar players on Cant Slow Down. Besides Chris and Bryan, all other members were replaced and through being cool came out.

Anyway this cd isnt as creative as its sophomore release, "Through Being Cool," but its still saves the day, and it is still amazing. More of the hardcore edge like their even earlier recordings (featured on "ups and Downs" cd, where Chris was still only 16 when they recorded a few of those songs), and by going in order, each saves the day record gets moderatly slower with each release, with the exception of Sound The Alarm, which is yet another milestone for STD by the way. Nonetheless, this cd is catchy and worth whatever you spend on it.

This Album is really great, especially if you are a fan of Lifetime! This album sounds way different than newer Saves the Day albums and sounds VERY similar to the band Lifetime. So if you are a fan of Dan Yemin's guitar work you will enjoy this album!!

Oldest album a must-buy.......2004-06-17

Saves the Day has acquired many new fans thanks to some of their newer releases like Through Being Cool, Stay What You Are, and In Reverie. Often unnoticed, their first album, Can't Slow Down, is a necessary part of any Saves the Day collection. No two Saves the Day albums sound the same, so each CD is definately worth buying. This album dates the band back to their punk roots and sounds much more raw than the others. The poetic lyrics of Chris Conley, laced with deep metaphors and emotional intensity, contribute to the album's greatness without compromising the musical integrity. Can't Slow Down is definately a must-buy for any fan of any Saves the Day album.

really, there arent but ill try my best. ok where to start? there are many great songs on this album with really good lyrics also. chris conley just never ceases to amaze me. ok so every song on here is awesome and each has something particularly special in it even though they sound the same at first but dont be discouraged. the first time i gave it a listen, i didnt really like it but now im soo in love with it.
my favorite song would have to be BLINDFOLDED it has the best lyrics in it and also the other great ones are: Deciding, the choke handsome boy, collision, three miles down (sexy acoustic song), always ten feet tall, Hot time in Deleware, Obsolete, and Jodie and many more hah thats like all of them though but its cause they are all soo well put together. so please buy this youll be happy

EVERY SONG has something that is worth listening to whether it has a good lyrical lyric that is cool to hear or some good guitar part oh and the bass on here is pretty amazing stuff

I tried to like this album... I really did. I enjoy emo music, but this just didn't do it for me. The Choke and Three Miles Down are both very good tracks, but beyond that, there's not much here. All of the rest of the songs sound about the same, and there's nothing that stands out about them. There are much better selections within this style of music. I would suggest The Get Up Kids' "Something to Write Home About". That is a much better investment that "Can't Slow Down".

CAN'T SLOW DOWN, LIONEL RICHIES MAGNUM OPUS, WHAT A CAREER LIONEL ONCE HAD....................2007-01-26

I remember hearing the release on Sept.8th 1983 of "All Night Long" on my FM radio. Thriller was the big album of the day. "Can't Slow Down" was a worthy competitor to "Thriller" and had it share of number one hits and hits in general. I look back at those years of 1983-1984 when "Can't slow Down" was climbing the charts and realize what a creative recording this really was. I had the vinyl lp back in those years and even the "All Night Long" 45 on the blue Motown label.(remember those 45s). David Foster co-produced this landmark Motown recording. David Foster also produced the 1984s 7,500,00O seller Chicago 17. Everything Lionel Richie touched at this time, from music to Pepsi commercials turned to gold. Lionel Richie was at a creative zenith at this time of his career that few music stars or even celebrities even reach, Lionel could do no wrong. Lionel was even selling out big arenas with his music tours. After some marriage problems Lionel Richie lost his magic touch, and really disapeared from the publics eye and recorded and released some more recordings with little fanfare. As of 2004 here in NYC I saw Lionel Richie performing a free concert at Bryant Park which he really enjoyed performing, what a fall from the mountain Lionel was once on top of. The extra demos might be overkill but it gives you some insight to how this 1980s landmark album was created. I enjoyed the intstrumental of "All Night Long". The linear notes are very informative and facinating. Definitly highly recommended listening. "CAN'T SLOW DOWN" is a recording worth a delux cd edition. Regardless of the negatives and naysayers Lionel Richie during the years 1983-1984 reached a peak in his career few musicians or celebrities have and ever will.

NOT THAT GREAT.......2007-01-20

I agree with the March 2, 2006 reviewer. Beware when you purchase this "remastered" version because the sound quality is so low, that you almost have to cut your CD player up to full volume to hear some of the tracks (hence the idea of remastering is to give you better sound quality not worse). I find the bonus material to be acceptable, however, and the additional remixes are fine as well (if you are a fan). Just don't understand who in the quality control department, (or why even Lionel himself) let this one fly, because volume wise it is absolutely terrible. I am curious if the single disc remastered version is any better.

So Many Things Wrong With This, I Don't Know Where To Begin!.......2006-03-02

So I'll start with the alleged remastering; you'd think that at least the main course should sound better than the appetizers but that isn't the case here. The volume levels are so low and the voice levels are so soft you can hardly hear Lionel above the music. The sound quality is also very patchy with some tracks sounding a lot better than others but what really gets me is that the bonus remixes added on to disc one sound a lot better than the main album which is criminal.

Secondly, there are only so many versions of "All Night Long" I can stand on one album before I get really sick of the song and we have 3 of them here. Disc 2 is totally redundant and is full of fillers. The only redeeming track is "Tell Me" for me and only because it shows me what the great track "Please Hold On" written by David Foster and performed so brilliantly by Chicago on their album "17" sounded like as a rough idea that was demo-ed by Lionel Richie. Listen to "Please Hold On" by Chicago and you'll know what I mean about how much better the final product is that started out as the skeleton track "Tell Me".

Save your money folks because Disc 2 is truly forgettable and unnecessary unless you have money to burn. I really hope they remaster this album again properly without the bonus fillers and perhaps package it in a mini-lp sleeve on one disc; that's the only way they will do justice to this otherwise classic album and by far Lionel Richie's best solo work.

Final recommendation: not worth the money; get the normal one disc version that's out there.

One Of The Best Remastered Albums.......2006-02-25

I have listened to this album alot since i bought it, i also bought this orginal album on cassette when it came out as well. This is by far Lionel's best album. I even loved the extended cuts as well as the ones that didn't make the orginal. excellent work Lionel, i would love it if you still keep playing wonderful music for a long time to come.

An R&B/Pop masterpiece, and one of my all-time favorites........2005-09-29

I practically grew up with this album, along with Michael Jackson's "Thriller." The hit singles bring back so many wonderful memories of 1984. Of course, even shorn of those memories, the tracks are absolutely stellar on their own.

"All Night Long" was the very first Lionel Richie track I can remember hearing (I was a year-and-a-half old when it was released in late 1983). Because of that, I consider it to be his signature song. "Hello" also captured my fancy; one would think that such a young child would not be interested in it, but I certainly was. Mr. Richie's earnest and friendly vocal performance, coupled with the wonderful melodies and chords, made this track very memorable for me.

"Stuck on You" is another very earnest track, which took me a while to warm up to. It is in the key of F-major, which always left me with an almost sad, bittersweet feeling whenever I heard such a song. But it's chorus hook and guitar hook after each chorus always stayed with me.

I've saved my absolute favorite track for last: "Running With the Night," which is my all-time favorite Lionel Richie track. Not only is it completely danceable, but I love the fact that it was written in the key of A-minor, the one key with which I usually associate many of my favorite early-'80s tracks.

The title track is my favorite non-single; it is a shame that it was not released as a single. To read in the liner notes of this new edition the excitement and energy felt by Mr. Richie when he first wrote and then cut the track makes it all the more shameful that such exhuberant effort was not given the exposure it deserved. Oh well. It is still a killer track.

The audio re-mastering is absolutely superb; it is punchy, gutsy, and warm, which really gets you "into" the music at high volume levels. Appropriately, I was taking an internship as an audio engineer at the time of this edition's release. If only all re-mastered albums sounded this good.

A slim volume of Gershwin's own arrangements of his popular songs exists, and has been recorded by many pianists. Unfortunately, these arrangements exist for only a scant few of Gershwin's songs, and they are rather abbreviated and dare I say it? Unsatisfying. Enter Jack Gibbons. Mr. Gibbons has meticulously researched George Gershwin's own playing of these pieces, from old radio shows, movie soundtracks, and other archival sources and he plays them exactly the way the composer did. He kids you not about "authentic". This is about as close as you can get to the source, and the recorded sound is spectacular. Bravo!

i dig this Album alot still to this day."Love Will find a way" is my Jam.Lionel is very Versatile&you feel that element on this Classic Album."Hello" was my cut as well.to this day everytime a chick Calls up my House I get into "hello" Mode.the Bonus Material here is cool.Lionel Richie is One of the Greatest Songwriters Ever.this is a Feel Good Album&has alot of good material here.
