Album Description

This live 2 CD set contains over 158 minutes of what Wayne Horvitz says is the best recording Zony Mash has ever done. The recording is compiled over 2 nights of the final shows of the incarnation we know as Zony Mash. While we are sad to see them go, this recording leaves fond memories of greatness.

4 out of 5 stars Best Zony Mash? Yes. Best Wayne Horvitz? No........2007-01-10

As a big fan of Wayne Horvitz' Downtown-avant-jazz-noise-groove-melodies with such bands as The President and Pigpen, I was thrilled with the formation of Zony Mash -- a true band, not just a revolving door of wandering supporting musicians who happen to be in town during the recording session. Sadly, while I tapped my toes and snapped my fingers to the first couple of Zony Mash releases, I waited in vain for their artistic creativity and adventurous spirit to really shine. It never did, and I stopped buying Zony Mash discs; gone were the experimental electronics brilliantly woven into the fabric of the beat or melody; gone were the fuzz-drenched stretches of chops-laden improvisations; gone was the inventiveness and risk-taking. Zony Mash had become a formulatic pop band (granted, an instrumental Hammond-B3-led pop band).

Until now. For their farewell shows Zony Mash called upon the spirit of their downtown heritage. Quite a bit noisier than their studio counterparts, this new Zony Mash stretches a bit here and there, always perched on the volume and distortion pedals, not afraid to venture occasionaly past the edges of melody, harmony, and beat. Don't worry, you'll still be tapping your toes and snapping your fingers, you'll just be happily cringing a little bit during the electronics/B3 workout of "Smiles," the extended neo-metal guitar jam during Pharoah Sanders' "Upper Egypt," or the distorto-bass solo that punctuates John Zorn's "Sex Fiend." The only drawback is that about half of this two-disc set are just fairly straight readings of the studio tracks; not bad, by any means, just not as amazingly brilliant as you know this band can be.

Fans of the old Wayne Horvitz' The President and Pigpen rejoice! Zony Mash is finally living up to its calling.

5 out of 5 stars Best Mash on Disc.......2004-04-16

I had the good fortune of seeing Zony Mash live in my small backwater town a few years back, and their chops and presence on stage made the sad echo of their studio albums hard to understand- did a strange machine somehow drain 3/4ths of their vitality at the studio door?
Along came Upper Egypt, and I was a happy man- finally a studio release that bottled at least some of the vivacity I'd seen live.

But the release of this disc brings audio Nirvana. GET IT.

Keyboardist Wayne Horvitz kicks off Upper Egypt with Pharoah Sanders's tune of the same name, citing it in the liner notes as a pivotal piece for his own musical development. Here it's transmogrified into Zony Mash's swamp jazz but remains recognizable via palpable echoes of guitarist Sonny Sharrock (who played it originally on Sanders's Tauhid) in Tim Young's playing. It's an homage that sounds at once pristine and totally Zony--such is the sound of this band that it's easily identifiable and very memorable. Horvitz has found a studied, smoking mix. Young's guitar and Keith Lowe's electric bass have that funny, shadowy character of being frontally grabbing yet subtle in their depths. On Hammond B-3, Horvitz touches both the blocky front parts and the keyboard's background details, making grainy clouds on the big organ that alternate between atmosphere ("The End of Time") and heavy riffing ("FYI"). --Andrew Bartlett

While it's always been difficult to attach Wayne Horvitz to one particular style, this much can be said about Zony Mash, the keyboardist's quartet: They rock. They also swing and dispense a plentiful allowance of funk and soul while spicing the mixture with just enough of the Downtown blare and confusion that Horvitz built his reputation upon. As a band, Zony Mash can hold its own. Andy Roth provides a stable drum foundation for bassist Fred Chalenor, who continues to push his instrument up and over in small, interesting ways. Guitarist Timothy Young provides an effective (but certainly not a scene-stealing) foil for Horvitz. But make no mistake: This LP belongs to the keyboardist. Here, Horvitz leadfoots everything from a Hammond B3 to a Moog synthesizer, providing a wild, unpredictable ride. Buckle up--Mr. H. can drive like a banshee! --S. Duda

      5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2003-03-14

How do you know when you *really* like an album? After you hear it over and over, you start buying other CDs by the same artist. But THEN, you notice that the other CDs are not as good as the first. BUT you loved that first one so much, you just keep buying and buying the artist's work, hoping you'll eventually find another one as good as the first.

After BRAND SPANKIN' NEW, I bought all of the other Zony Mash albums, Wayne Horvitz's solo stuff, and albums by his other bands, The President and Pig Pen. None of them are quite as good as this, but most of them get very close.

      5 out of 5 stars yummy.......1999-12-08

Zony Mash successfully walks the line between serious, avant-tinged jazz and MMW style jam music. Honestly, I don't get into the latter, but I really love this album.

5 out of 5 stars These guys kick A$$........1999-04-20

Zony Mash is a mix between Medeski, Martin, Wood, and John Zorn's "Naked City" style, not surprising being that frontman Wayne Horvitz was in "Naked City". Their style is rocking-funk/smooth grooves and great composition. This is not your typical 4 man band that plays standard funk, this is a bit on the edge of avant-garde, but not quite reaching that realm. If you haven't heard them, you need to, NOW. IMO, they take a backseat to nobody. Both the newest album and the first album are equal in quality, and I say don't hold back, buy both.

3 out of 5 stars For hardcore fans only.......2006-07-25

If you own the latest CD editions of the earliest Meters albums ("The Meters," "Look-Ka Py Py" and "Struttin'") which were re-released on Sundazed and Rhino in 1999 and 2001, you have already heard 6 of the tracks on this 37 minute long CD, which incidentally was released in 2003.
This is a collection of the bonus tracks which are available on the aforementioned albums plus 7 other tracks (the bonus track "Grass" from "Look-Ka Py Py" has been renamed "Sassy Lady.")
It is not a "best of" collection nor a proper introduction to the band. Furthermore the design of the disc is somewhat cheap, and the titles of track #12 and track #13 are listed in the opposite order.
The tracks "Zony Mash" and "I Need More Time" are both in mono, and there is probably good reason why some of the music on this CD was "lost." The material should be mostly of interest to very serious fans and/or biographers wanting to cover and comment on as much as possible in the group's past.
There are, however, a couple of really cool, funky, laid back, dirty, groovy tunes that anyone with a sense of rhythm will enjoy; "Stretch Your Rubber Band," "Doodle-Oop" and "Groovy Lady" are the real highlights and make 8-10 minutes of music worth obtaining this disc for if you are a fan of the group's early material and want more.

5 out of 5 stars The Great Lost Meters Album.......2005-12-08

The Meters started recording for the Josie label in 1968, with their debut 45 ("Sophisticated Cissy") hitting the charts early in 1969. In all Josie issued three fine Meters albums, "The Meters" (May 1969), "Look-Ka-Py-Py" (January 1970), and "Struttin" (June 1970). By 1972 Josie had folded and the band had signed with Reprise, debuting that year with "Cabbage Alley," seemingly a radical departure in its range of rock and soul influences, and integration of vocals.
"Zony Mash" is a fine collection of Josie singles and outtakes. Eight of these tracks are from the four singles Josie issued after "Struttin'," during 1970-71 until the label's demise. As such it is something of an unissued fourth album for the label. "Zony Mash" provides a fascinating look at the group in transition between the mostly instrumental, seminal funk of the early work and the Warner Bros. era. Beautifully remastered, the funk is hard and heavy on the terrific opener and title track (featuring Nocentelli's wah-wah over Porter and Modeliste's aggressive rhythm), and elsewhere one can chart the group's evolution with each new single. Much of the material has a harder edge than the exquisite, almost minimalist funk of the early classics, and influences from Sly Stone to the Rolling Stones and Norman Whitfield's early '70s work at Motown (especially for the Temptations) are clearly evident. The structurally ambitious "I Need More Time", "Message From The Meters", "Sassy Lady", and "(The World Is A Bit Under The Weather) Doodle-Oop" - the latter a far tougher version than the one recorded for Reprise several years later - are all excellent singles that show the group both consolidating its instumental powers and moving in directions suggesting the Reprise era. Five additional tracks are outtakes from the three earlier albums. Like the best artists during what was a truly great era for black music, the Meters are able to explore new territory and maintain their fundamental musical identity. Anyone who has the classic Josie albums, now available in superbly annotated and remastered editions on Sundazed, will find "Zony Mash" to be an excellent addition to the Meters ouevre.

4 out of 5 stars Great tunes from the funky meters!.......2003-10-26

The Meters are at the top of my list of all time funk groups. Zony Mash has several great singles which did not appear on albums like "Message from the Meters", "I Need More Time", "Good Old Funky Music". The Meters are starting to get the polish they would have with their Warner albums but still maintain the raw sound of their Josie sides. The Meters still sound like a New Orleans version of Booker T and the MGs; they are just beginning to add some more vocals to the mix.

Deciding whether to purchase this depends on how your collecting their stuff. If you've bought the two disc compilation "Funkify Your Life", this is not an essential purchase. You'll have the best tracks already and should look to albums like Rejuvenation and Cabbage Alley to fill out album tracks that didn't make that compilation. If you're a Meters completist whose been collecting the wonderfulr reissue series on Sundazed, this will be a nice purchase to round out the other fine releases and get some nonalbum tracks.

3 out of 5 stars Watered down, funk-fusion. Nice busy background music........1998-10-29

I had high hopes. I always do. I don't have any other albums by anybody in the band, so I had nothing to compare it to. The band members all hold their own very nicely. There are some very good fusion tunes on here, but nothing very memorable. I was waiting for someone to just start tearing up the place, and it did happen in a few spots for a brief time, but not as often as I had hoped. I agree with the previous review concerning their live show. I bet they would be hot hot hot live. It seems like they were held back a bit in the studio, and live, they could potentially give Niacin a run for their money. But, if you're looking for the b-3 groove, and you want your booty to move, pick up Niacin, High Bias. You can't go wrong with Dennis Chambers.

      5 out of 5 stars Great nouveau jazz--Horvitz a Hammond B-3 specialist!.......1998-07-18

Zony Mash is what you get when you take four great musicians and let them have at it. They're great--see them live if you possibly can! Horvitz plays Hammond B-3 masterfully, and Andy Roth is a treat on drums. Fred Chalenor on bass and Timothy Young on guitar round out this great group. The disk is cool, but you'll really love them live.
