This is the whispers, what do you expect. CD packed with nice tracks. What else can you say about this group-they just get better and better with time.
The Mighty Whispers.......2006-03-13
These guys have a ton of hits.
Full of power, high energy and soul. Great dance music, even for my two daughters of 2 and 3 1/2 years of age!
Magnificent collection!!!!!!!.......2005-03-07
I have gotten several copies of this album, the CD and cassette collections, to play at home and in my car, the past several years! But this is a magnificent representation of their music career of 2 decades of hits! The Whispers were willing to update their sound every album they did according to the trends of the moment, yet pulled it off. And The Beat Goes On is still funky, but so are underrated songs like Olivia, All The Way, Contagious, Innocent and others. Rock Steady still rocks a strong 18 years later! Lady is still a beautiful love ballad. I still like the dramatic yet funky instrumental section of Keep on Lovin' Me after the second chorus, which provides body to the song. Even the 3 offerings from 1990's More Of The Night showed the Whispers still in top form, a rarity that they can match with longtime groups The Temptations, the Four Tops and Kool and The Gang. Capitol did a fine job collecting their Solar and Capitol Records hits for this 75-minute album!
The Whispers Greatest Hits.......2004-05-17
This is my favorite cd. The whipers have good beats and sing very good as well, how come they are thought of very little. They deserve much more for this musical masterpiece.
Highlights of this cd are: Living together(In sin), And the beat goes on, Its a love thing, Tonight( my favorite song on here) and Rock steady.
The Whispers changed musical styles all the time but never failed to get me dancin. There are no bad songs on here. If you like R and B you will love this. I am only fourteen and I like this music. Pick this up right away. You wont be dissapointed.
solid soul.......2003-01-16
For those who may only know R&B legends The Whispers from the Babyface-penned hit "Rock Steady," circa 1987, this collection will be an eye-opener. The Whispers have been making consistent, soulful music for over three decades. The "Greatest Hits" collection covers a good chunk of their best material from the mid 1970s up to the early 1990s. The vocals are always smooth and the musical styles range from Philly soul to disco to electro-funk to quiet storm. It's a historic and excellent look back at what music sounded like before hip-hop became the grammar of R&B music.
Highlights include "(Olivia) Lost and Turned Out," a live concert favorite (and possibly the smoothest vocals ever on a song about prostitution), "And The Beat Goes On," a 1980 disco hit sampled by rapper Will Smith in his hit "Miami," the aforementioned "Beat," and the Gary Taylor-penned "Just Gets Better With Time."
Some of the tracks are a little dated ("Contageous," "One For the Money") but all possess the careful craftsmanship and understated but soulful vocals that have made The Whispers popular over the years. If you're a casual fan, buy this without hesitation. If you're a serious fan, this is a good place to start.

Product Description
The Whispers is one of the most respected and enduring vocal groups in the music industry with a stellar career that spans over four decades. It’s been 9 years since their last CD (Songbook, Volume 1, Songs of Babyface, released in 1997), and fans have been clamoring for a new collection perfected by their smooth, harmonious voices. “For Your Ears Only” is the first to be produced on the Whispers’ independent label, Satin Tie Productions headed by the Whispers themselves. The song collection is a mixture of classic soul, rhythm and blues, jazz, and pop, performed in “pure Whisper” tradition from the classic “Don’t Say No” penned by Grady Wilkins and Alonzo Ward, to the smooth, sexy “Butta”, written and arranged by the great Teena Marie. On Valentine’s Day, wives and lovers will be serenaded with the passions of “Diamonds”, “Love Stroking”, “Hold On” and Nicholas Caldwell’s “Love”. On the dating scene, guys looking for a soul mate can woo them with Ollie Woodson’s “Can I Get Next To You” and “It’s You” (Nicholas Caldwell and the Whispers’ guitarist Emilio Conesa). For dancers and steppers, “Get It On” and “Love Won’t Let Me Wait” will electrify the party goers and add a touch of soulful, funky class to the local DJ’s night club collection. The “Believers” and “Fans” were not forgotten; “I Sing This Song For You” is dedicated to the Man Upstairs whose gifts of song and songwriting elevated the Whispers to where they are today. As for their longtime fans, the last song on the CD, “The Whispers Love You Too” says it all: “My heart compels me to tell each and every one of you, if it’s the last thing I do, I pray you know it’s true, the Whispers Love You Too!” Whispers’ fans will not be disappointed.

GREATEST COMPILATION OF SONGS EVER.......2007-07-31
THE WHISPERS HAVE BEEN TOO LONG UNDER-RATED; THIS COMPLILATION JUST CONFIRMS THAT; DON'T KNOW WHY THE MUSIC INDUSTRY DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THEM FOR ALL THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS IN AMERICAN MUSIC. BEAUTIFUL LYRICS AND GREAT MUSICAL COMPOSITIONS; UPLIFTING TO FEMALES.
Greatest Slow Jam, The Whispers.......2006-02-25
Loved it. It took me back to the old slow jam days
Classic group ;-).......2006-01-25
These guys are such a great group. Their music, in my mind, is timeless and I still listen to it often. My favourite song of theirs is In The Mood and that's here on this cd as well as Chocolate Girl. This is some serious sexy music and something all romantics and lovers of good soul, old school r 'n' b would love, so you must get this if you want a definitive collection of their beautiful ballads. I highly recommend this.
Say Yes!.......2005-04-18
This is only part I! The Whispers had a way with silky smoothness that would melt a block of ice! These jams are both sensuous and sexy!
Classic, classic, mellow smooth slow jams from "Love is Where you Find it"...to "Living Together in Sin!" This is a must have for any smooth grooves collector!
True Old-School Lovin'.......2003-03-01
The bonus track "Love's Calling" is good enough for the entire price of this CD. The Whispers!! Amazingly sublime band. Honey-dip vocals that will take you back to the days when love's love, when the world was filled with chivalry and romance. Some of the greatest love songs ever recorded are all is this CD. Check this out and slow-groove to the days of true romancin'..

GREAT SET!!!!.......2004-09-02
I like this group. I must say that this is a very nice compilation of the Whispers. This is a nice compilation set of the Whispers hits. This album contains some of my favorite Whispers songs. My mom used to listen to the Whispers when I was a kid and that is how I had learned to enjoy them. I got my love of music by listening to the music that she listened to when i was a kid. She still enjoys the Whispers today. This is a must have for any Whispers fan.

Customer Reviews:
Good import.......2006-03-09
This is a good import and is a great start for anyone new to The Cure,This record is definitley one of my favorites.
Japanese Whispers.......2006-02-23
The is my favorite group. This disk it's more less, two songs very good
It is SINFUL that this album is not available in the US.......2005-12-19
This album should be held in the highest regard. It spotlights some of Robert Smith's best songwriting skills, and some of the bands most truly "wild mood swings". Lament has always been one of my favorite songs. This album should be remastered, re-packaged, and held high up on a pedastal!
Nice, poppy yet interesting deviation from usual cure..........2005-09-30
I honestly don't know how terrible it must have been to have your
gothy mascara run (from the tears) after hearing The Cure daring to deviate from their one-dimentional gloomy course before becoming a parody of themselves and release the refreshingly lighthearted, fun single "Let's Go To Bed".
I'm sure it was a bitter pill to swallow (giggle).
Don't get me wrong. Seventeen Seconds is my favorite Cure album but I think this collection of synth-heavy songs should not be dismissed just because of its' not-so-goth pop (as opposed to their familliar goth pop) status.
Sire records issued the six song The Walk EP (later they issued Japanese Whispers & The Top), which is basically the same as JW minus "Lovecats" and "Language".
I listened to that tape untill I wore it out.
Some of these songs are up there with their best material.
"The Upstairs Room" is brilliantly catchy and original.
"Just One Kiss" is chillingly perfect Cure and would not have been out of place on Disintigration (same goes for "Lament").
"Let's Go To Bed", "The Walk" and "The Dream" are all great catchy idiosyncratic pop songs.
Their "It's got to be jazz" sloganeering on the "Lovecats"
single sleeve may have been a bit of a mis-step, but proved enjoyable all the same.
As "Speak My Language" is a starting reference point for boozy Smith ramblings.
A fine little stop-gap release!
POP went the weasel.......2005-09-24
Trying to shrug off the unwarranted "Goth" tag that saddled the Cure after the one-two-three punch of 17 Seconds, Faith and Pornography, singer-songwriter-leader Robert Smith recorded this series of ultra-pop singles, most of which work very well as such. And those fans who complain that the Cure "sold out" by recording these songs only need to look to their debut album and the few singles recorded around that time. "Boys Don't Cry" in particular is as undeniably "pop" as anything they have ever recorded. Japanese Whispers should rightly be seen as more than just a stop-gap, or a novelty. It is precisely this, the lighter side of the Cure, that makes the darker, more serious material even more so. These songs are at turns winsome and fluffy, and (lyrically, at least ) a bit more esoteric and quirky. What holds this release back from a five star rating is the atrocious sound quality ( hopefully the re-release next year will tidy that up ) and the fact that the first ten or so seconds of "Just One Kiss" have been taken out ( a discordant drum and piano intro that I distinctly remember from the cassette edition that Sire Records released in 1983 .) As a whole, Japanese Whispers is a nice addition to your Cure collection, a breath of fresh air, and the perfect antidote to the sometimes stifling and claustrophobic work that preceded it.

Me extendí...?

Dripping wet.......1999-09-19
I first heard the name and music of Nestor Torres on one of those "listen to a sample" CD players in a store. It took me about 3 seconds of the first track to know I was onto something, someone. Every track is infectious, fetching, sensual! And then -- the mark of real musician -- Nestor reached back to 1939 and pulls out the old Judy Garland standard and for nearly ten minutes spins gold into that journey over the rainbow. What a class performance! Not many flautists around... so Nestor's talents are even more enjoyable. If you like it dancin' Latin, get this one and check out his other CD's, too!

This is Chanticleer's 25th recording and also marks its 25th anniversary season. The title refers to the group's wide-ranging repertoire; this disc includes Mexican baroque, traditional American songs in various styles and music commissioned by Chanticleer itself. A program that tries to please everybody is bound to disappoint somebody; however, no one could be disappointed by the singing. The sound of these 12 unaccompanied male voices has an unearthly, celestial beauty and purity; their blend is perfect. Though the singers rarely use vibrato, their intonation is impeccable both together and in solos. Their expressive range and stylistic versatility are incredible: they can project tenderness, pleading, and bitter protest and are equally at home in plainchant, Latin hymns, blues, spirituals, shouts and crooning. Among the highlights are the three opening hymns, settings of two poems of Torquato Tasso by William Hawley, commissioned by Chanticleer, which combine 16th- and 20th-century styles, and the two final folksongs, the last with a stride-style piano accompaniment, making a rousing, exuberant ending. The booklet, in three languages, is well laid-out and informative. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Amazing, ecclectic album.......2007-07-11
This CD is a great example of Chanticleer's phenomenal versatility, and it has something for everyone to appreciate. The Appalacian twang on the two Billings pieces is a bit much, but otherwise Chanticleer is in top form here and really shows what they are made of. As for the recording itself, something about the micing or acoustics in the recording process causes the countertenors to be just a tad too strong on a few tracks, but it's not a major problem.
To me, the most extraordinary tracks are: The Un-Covered Wagon with it's surreal effects and incredible array of vocal techniques, Willow Weep For Me, Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair (Michael Lichtenauer's solo floats so effortlessly in a mixed vocal register, I have never heard anything like it!), and Whispers.
Warning: This CD Is Addictive.......2006-12-10
I purchased this CD after hearing this magnificent choral group sing "Calling My Children Home" in a recent concert. Written by Doyle Lawson (from the group "Quicksilver"), Charlie Waller and Robert Yates, the song is a standard bluegrass number I had known for years (Emmy Lou Harris for one has recorded it); but I had no idea it had found its way to San Francisco. Chanticleer has made this song their own. I cannot imagine anyone else's version coming close to theirs.
The group sings 17 other songs on this CD, most of them arranged by Joseph Jennings, Chanticleer's music director. Their version of William Billings' "David's Lamentation," a Sacred Harp work, will blow you away. Another favorite of mine is "Wayfaring' Stranger." There are also two Stephen Foster songs included, "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair" and "Camptown Races" as well as Gershwin and other American composers.
There seems to be no kind of music that this group cannot sing better than most other groups. They remind us that there is no musical instrument more beautiful than the human voice.
This CD should be one for the time capsule.
Well worth buying.......2005-08-16
Chanticleer fans know what to expect in terms of vocal quality, and won't be disappointed. I agree with another reviewer that the Appalachian accent is a little over the top, but I thought the shape-note style was perfect: brilliant sound, but not that nasal.
I enjoyed the many styles of music in this CD, but since I tend to listen to CDs straight through as albums, I found it a little disconcerting to go so suddenly from one style to the next (e.g., Mexican Baroque to shape note).
That being said, everything is splendidly, sensitively performed. The renditions of "Whispers" and "The Un-Covered Wagon" are breathtaking. By all means, buy and enjoy this!
Good variety of American Choral Music.......2005-01-03
This album features a wonderful selection of "American" choral music. I'm not a big fan of the "stylized" singing of the shape-note pieces (with the nasal voices), but that is my only complaint. My favorite piece is Steven Stucky's "Whispers" which is an artfully crafted homage to Orlando Gibbons' "Drop, Drop, Slow Tears" and William Byrd's "Ave Verum Corpus." Joseph Jennings and Chanticleer effectively demonstrate that there is no "defining" American choral music and it is this rich panoply of variety which is so enchanting!
Absolutely wonderful!!.......2003-10-25
This album shows Chanticleer's great talent and it displays they're wonderful voices. I've seen them perform pieces from this album and they do it with such passion. It's wonderful. If you don't get this or any of their albums you truly are missing out!!

Fell in love.......2002-10-04
I met my husband in 1995 when this tape came out. We got it, listened to it, over an over and fell in love. This is definitely my favorite CD by the Whispers.
Loving Full Felt Songs For The Soul & Heart.......2002-08-30
This album I lost and have always been in love with. My car was stolen and it wasin my car. I've been looking for this car for a very long time. The Whispers really did it up on this one. Although there is not one that I do not like - I have to say this is my favorite rated well over 5 stars.

"I only meant to wet my feet..........2005-09-03
...but you pulled me in where all the waters of love run deep"! I still keep playing this song over and over again from the moment I bought this CD! All the songs are really great - and rare too - but this particular song (not appearing in Whispers Greatest Hits), back from 1971, is a must have for every R&B (and not only Whispers') fan!
Not..........2005-04-18
As solid as the first set, but still worthy of a multiple star rating! This disc finishes off the first one with some rare gems! Like "I only meant to wet my feet" and "Just A Memory" a duet with Carrie Lucas! This is a must buy, if you own the 1st CD...or your collection is incomplete!
Good Set.......2003-05-03
I dug the Songs Here&thought they were Good but not as strong as the First set overall.having said that the Whispers Vocally are on top of there game here.
The Whispers Greatest Slow Jams, Vol.2.......2003-03-10
Wow what a cd. The Whispers have out done themselves with this collection of music. Very sophisticated, tastefully done and what you would expect from a class act such as The Whispers.
They Just Get Better With Time.......2001-02-07
This compilation continues what was started on Greatest Slow Jams, volume one. It even includes some rare cuts from the group's Soul Clock/Janus years ("I Only Meant To Wet My Feet"; "I'm The One"; "Somebody Loves You"; "Seems Like I Gotta Do Wrong"). Combine them with notable omissions from the first Slow Jams ("Just Gets Better With Time"; "Lost And Turned Out") and you have a solid package that will please all of The Whispers' slow-jammin' fans. There is one mistake on the packaging. The song included here is "I'm The One," which was written by Dee Ervin and appeared on their Janus album, "Planets Of Life." It is NOT the listed song, "I'm The One For You," that was written by Gene Dozier and appeared on their Solar album, "This Kind Of Lovin'."

Excellent take of Babyface's songs.......2005-04-30
I never thought that the Whispers would do an album of Babyface's many hits. But this album contains many of my favorites that he produced and wrote. Some surprises are Can We Talk, Exhale, My My My, I Love You Babe and others. I like the funky You're Makin' Me High! Don't know why they didn't do an updated version of Rock Steady, the song that LA and Babyface had a hit with them in 1987 and returned them back to top status as a group. But they selected a solid 12 songs that matched with their vocals and harmonies. A very dynamic and smartly done tribute to Babyface as a major music force!
why peolpe don't understand beauitful music.......2004-09-27

Stick With The Original Versions!!.......2004-06-21
Honestly, this should be zero stars but that's just me. I'm one of the HUGEST Babyface fan you'll ever meet and this here is a CLASSIC disappointment!! There are many artists that cover songs that an artist made famous or not famous and most times the result didn't par with the original. This is the case here!! If you expect to find a definitive version like how Luther Vandross did with 'A House Is Not A Home'(which was originally sung by Dionne Warwick) and made it FAR better than any versions before or after, you will NOT find it on this album. All of the songs are either written or co-written by Babyface with the exception of "All In Good Time". Before you buy and listen to any of the tracks here, make sure to listen to the original artists that Babyface 'specifically tailored' for the other artists or himself: "My, My, My"(Johnny Gill), "Seven Whole Days"/ You're Making Me High"(Toni Braxton), "Whip Appeal"/"For The Cool In You"/"Soon As I Get Home"/"I Love You Babe"(Babyface), "Two Occasions"(The Deele), "Can We Talk"(Tevin Campbell), "Exhale(Shoop Shoop)"(Whitney Houston). After you listen to the original artist that recorded those songs, you'd find that these remakes are watered down(and that's just putting it mildly). Trust me, you'll only regret it in the end if you purchase this album. Buy the original versions, you'll be much satisfied by the production values, the vocals, as well as the arrangements and all since the original tracks by the original artists were produced or co-produced by Babyface. The overall value for this album is NOT very good at all!! If you want to listen to anything that Babyface `specifcally' wrote for the Whispers, I suggest you listen to `Rock Steady', `In The Mood', `Don't Keep Me Waiting', `Some Kinda Lover' or even the duo effort by Walter & Scotty that L.A. and Babyface wrote called `With All My Heart".
....soothing....and romantic............2001-08-31
This album, i discovered only by accident while browsing thru a record store a few years back. The only song by them that I knew then was "Rock Steady" from the late 80's but when I heard this album, I was really amazed. I knew some of the songs here and my curiosity of how their version will sound turned into admiration. I still love the original versions but I also appreciate the way they interpreted it in this album. I find the songs soothing and also, very romantic. I even gave 2 copies of it as wedding gifts to my friends and they enjoyed it, too. Really great for easy listening.
This is a Must.......2000-03-16
who Knew from the days when The Whispers did La&BabyFaces Rock steady that they would be recording Babyfaces Song Book? this is a Gem.Babyface has been the Most Important Writer&Producer over the past Decade and so it's only fitting that a Great Group Like The Whispers are choosen to sing his songs.and they turn them out.this is a very solid Disc from strat to finish I Hope there is a Part two.
