Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

The great Willie Nelson tends to either thrill or sorely disappoint, depending on the kinds of projects he takes on--and his decision to be either a musician or a celebrity. This live recording, culled from his 2003 USA Network concert event, unfortunately falls into the latter category, and Nelson sounds as if he arrived just before show time and plunged in without rehearsing. On the album's opener, "I Didn't Come Here (And I Ain't Leavin')," almost everything is wrong--the chorines, the overwhelming bigness of the production, and most troublesome, Nelson's apparent indifference. Thereafter, the program pairs him with such natural duet partners as Toby Keith and Ray Price, and such utterly unfathomable ones as Steven Tyler and Wyclef Jean, who prove, by turns, unlistenable and insufferable. While Diana Krall and Elvis Costello help give "Crazy" an odd and new kind of charm, Nelson's off-beat phrasing is just to quirky to work with Paul Simon's laconic musings ("Homeward Bound"), while the outing with Ray Charles and Leon Russell ("A Song for You") sounds like a cat-drowning ceremony. Weirdly, the best songs are those on which Nelson simply gets out of the way (John Mellencamp's bottleneck romp through "I Couldn't Believe It Was True," Kenny Chesney's soulful treatment of "Last Thing I Needed First Thing This Morning"). Thank God it's only a single disc. --Alanna Nash

Too much "friends," not enough Willie.......2006-05-13
Very few keepers on this one ... even "Crazy" and "Last Thing I Needed the First Thing This Morning" were (almost) disappointments because there was so little of Willie.
The legend singing it with friends.......2005-04-29
Willie Nelson is a legend and this CD proves it again. here are performances of a great artist who's enjoying his music with some of the great talents of today. it's great listening to great friends of Willie interpreting his music in their own ways. I think it's a great album giving us great music we all know in a little different and up to date way. enjoy!!!
Willie sings with anyone and everyone.......2004-06-30
Let me say upfront that I love Willie Nelson, and I believe him to be a national treasure and one of our greatest living storytellers/poets. The setting for this recording is Willie's 70th birthday. As Toby Keith mentioned on the original USA television version, "Willie may not look 70, but we sure remember when he did."
What makes this CD unique is that it features a very eclectic mix of musicians accompanying Willie in versions of popular songs (both his and theirs). The songs with Paul Simon, Eric Clapton and Ray Charles/Leon Russell provide entertaining performances that are also important moments in music history. It would be like having a recording of Lennon and Hendrix singing together.
Willie has recorded with everyone from Frank Sinatra to Janis Joplin. So, it is not a surprise that some of his guests on this CD may seem strange (Steven Tyler and Wyclef Jean). While many say his voice doesn't work with more polished singers, I think he provides an interesting contrast to the silky vocals of Norah Jones and Dianne Krall.
There seems to be a common theme among the positive and negative reviews on here: the positive reviews contain references to the television broadcast that proceeded the release of this CD and the negative ones do not. This seems to suggest the experience of listening to the music is heightened by viewing the live performances, and I agree.
Still Kickin', Nelson remains constantly on tour........2004-03-07
Recorded over a Two-day period and originally aired on the USA network last Memorial Day, Live and Kickin' shows Willie Nelson at the top of his career. He is joined onstage by Eric Clapton, Ray Charles, Wyclef Jean, Elvis Costello, Paul Simon, and ZZ Top to name a few. The album is a plethora of musical exploration, showing different sides of Nelson as a musician, and proving that he is as dynamic as they come. He appeals to diehard country fans, but Homeward Bound with Paul Simon is closer to folk, and To All The Girl's I Loved Before with Wyclef is more along the lines of Reggae. The solo tracks could only be described as haunting and tortured in a twangy sort of way. The immense crowds' reaction hangs on to every one of his words, honoring him like the accomplished road-veteran he is.
not bad.......2004-01-17
This isnt bad, but I heard it at the same time as Johnny Cash's last album and thought that one had more heart. I was also listening to David Allan Coe's Live From Billy Bob's and thought that one had more energy. Willie seems watered down here by all the guests.

An A-list of musically diverse acolytes surrounds the venerable country icon on this concert recording, which pays richer dividends than its studio-album predecessor, The Great Divide. Artists from Sheryl Crow to Norah Jones and Vince Gill to Keith Richards help celebrate one of the richest legacies in American music. Though some hit-and-miss is inevitable, the teaming with Richards, Ryan Adams, and Hank Williams III on "Dead Flowers" romps all over the Rolling Stones' original, while the duet with mentor Ray Price, who enjoyed an early hit with Nelson's "Night Life," shows a sense of history too often missing from such demographic-driven projects. Other highlights include the sweet-voiced balladry of Jones on "Lonestar" and a luminous rendition of "Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain" by Gill. As for the misfires: Adams and Nelson sound like they're in different keys on Jimmy Cliff's "The Harder They Come"; Toby Keith isn't even a poor man's Waylon Jennings on "Good Hearted Woman"; and the very idea of Matchbox Twenty singing "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys" is ludicrous. Even when the material and guest vocalists don't mesh, Nelson's guitar punctuation remains an understated (and underrated) delight. --Don McLeese

Stars and Guitars - Willie Nelson & Friends.......2006-11-10
While the overall quality and tracks are good, I think the over mixing of
background crowd applause becomes quite annoying after the first couple
of tracks. In other words the duration of background applause should have
been reduced in time by 60%.
So much for live recordings!
I Love Willie!.......2006-07-18
This is a great group of work with the exception of just a couple songs. But anyone who is truly a Willie fan will enjoy it for the spirit it represents!
For What it's Worth with Cheryl Crow is just wonderful! Willie and Cheryl together.....Can't get any better than that!
Willie's Perfect "Picnic"!.......2004-06-07
I love Willie and this has become one of my favorite live "Wille Albums"! All of the songs on this recording are wonderful and distinctly reveal Willie's ability as guitarist, songwriter, and performer. The many people who he invited to perform with him have been influenced by him and are proud to be a part of this album. There is no gimmick-madness trying to make some last minute money with an old country legend here!
Additionally, I have to say that those who did not like Aaron Neville's 'Stardust' need to listen to it again (and again!). It is the subtlety of Willie's vocals with Neville's unique singing ability that makes the song perhaps one of the best covers I have heard of 'Stardust'. Long live Willie! This is Willie revealing his genius. Buy this CD!

With a spirit of innocence and excitement, no audible breaks of register, and perfect diction, Dawn Upshaw graces us with a satisfying crossover recording in which each song is a fully realized musical monologue. The eclectic and infrequently performed repertoire, from Bernstein, Blitzstein, Sondheim, and Weill, compliments her charm and interpretive acuity. There's her humorous "Saga of Jenny," her adorable "That's Him," her poignant "Like It Was," and her freshly vibrant "I Feel Pretty." Conductor Eric Stern is divine in his arrangements and accompaniment. This is one of the best musical theater albums available. --Barbara Eisner Bayer
Customer Reviews:
Crossover at Its Best.......2006-11-15
"I Wish It So" is the CD that first introduced the exceptional "crossover" talents of soprano Dawn Upshaw. The album, which comprises (mostly) little-heard songs by Kurt Weill, Marc Blitzstein, Leonard Bernstein, and Stephen Sondheim, opens with the title number, a lyrical gem from Blitzstein's JUNO, and continues with Sondheim's vibrant "There Won't Be Trumpets," in which Upshaw, rather than belting, lets her voice ring. She then slam-dunks Sondheim's "What More Do I Need," a truly raucous number. Other highlights include the two songs from Weill's LADY IN THE DARK: the haunting ballad "My Ship" and the witty "The Saga of Jenny," presented here in a superb jazz arrangement. The sound of Upshaw's lower middle voice in this number is thrilling. Her combining of Blizstein's "Never Get Lost" and Sondheim's soaring, life-affirming "Take Me to the World" is perfect, as is her musical yet emotional rendition of "Like It Was" from Sondheim's MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG. The album climaxes with the mock-coloratura aria "Glitter and Be Gay" from Bernstein's CANDIDE, in which Upshaw scales the heights with consistently pure and beautiful tone. In a day when many great opera singers attempt, unsuccessfully, to sing "popular" song, "I Wish It So" is an example of crossover at its very best. It is a CD that no one who loves both opera and musicals should miss.
If Dawn Upshaw had made only one album..........2006-08-24
I have a weak spot for crossover albums by opera stars, which can often be train wrecks or embarrissing self-parodies. There's not a cringe-worthy note in this one, however. Dawn Upshaw has never been as vibrant on disc, and her style in pop music (albeit serious pop music) surpasses expectations. She is a master at touching vulnerability and stars-in-her-eyes vulnerability. There's no current Broadway star who can match her in any of these songs form Sondheim, Weill, and Bernstein, certainly not for sheer beauty of voice and charm. Upshaw went on to make an excellent album of Rodgers and Hart songs, but nothing else quite matches this first effort.
Great songs by a better than average singer. Buy It........2006-04-24
'I Wish It So' sung by popular / classical switch hitter, Dawn Upshaw is a very, very good interpretation of classical American musical theatre pieces by four masters of the genre, Leonard Bernstein (music), Marc Blitzstein (lyrics), Stephen Sondheim (lyrics) and Kurt Weill (music). As I am most familiar with female interpretations of Kurt Weill's songs, especially by the likes of his widow, Lotte Lenya and Weill interpreter extraordinare, Ute Lemper, I have to say that while Upshaw does them justice, she does ont outshine the very best Weill interpretations. Primarily, I believe she suffers from never actually performing the works on stage, as Lenya has.
And, since Ute Lemper did an album with a similar collection of songs (Illusions) from Sondheim and others, I thing Lemper still has the edge on interpreting other composers as well.
On the positive side, I find Upshaw's interpretation as good or better than almost everyone else who makes a career out of these songs, such as, dare I say it, Barbra Streisand. This is a good thing, because I believe Upshaw is not up to the very best mezzos who share her classical works. She can't hold a candle, for example, to Renee Fleming or Anne Sofie von Otter, although her interpretations of Weill are as good as von Otter, just not as good as Lenya and Lemper.
A very, very nice album if you like female vocalists.
A must album for all musical theatre lovers........2005-04-21
Dawn Upshaw once again disproves the adage that opera singers can't sing showtunes properly. Her diction, her ability to act out the lyrics and her crystal clear angel-like voice are just heavenly. Miss Upshaw could teach quite a few Broadway and Cabaret singers a thing or two about interpretation and she would have her hands full teaching opera singers like Te Kanawa or Fleming how to put over a showtune properly. Simply divine!
Timeless recording.......2004-07-20
This is an endlessly rewarding album by an operatic soprano who demonstrates an expressiveness and range rare in crossover albums of this sort. Upshaw modifies her classical technique without compromising it, narrating with a conversational tone and youthful ebullience well-suited to musical theater. She continues her tradition of championing obscure American art songs with three gorgeous Blitzstein pieces, and wisely avoids the standard, overdone Sondheim showpieces in favor of several gorgeous lesser-known songs. "I Feel Pretty" is given a refreshing makeover, while "Glitter and Be Gay" demonstrates both her impressive vocal control and comedic prowess. Despite the odd choice of "There Won't Be Trumpets", which demands a belter to properly execute the climax, this album is a well-conceived and cohesive collection that becomes more enjoyable on each subsequent listen.

How much fun can Willie have on stage? How hard can he rock? Only as much and as hard as the party warrants, and this audio souvenir of his third USA Network TV special is some kind of party. Despite some jarring editing--guest announcements intrude and Kid Rock's corny cameo lurches into Al Green's moaning pentecost--the star-spangled pageantry rarely overwhelms the loose, joyful collaborations. The killer house band, with Jim Keltner on drums and Nils Lofgren on guitar, shifts from swing to reggae to boogie rock, and leaves the Nelson Family Band, fine as they are, in the dust. Ol' Willie may go froggy on an otherwise gorgeous duet with a Carole King, he may be a no-show on Toots Hibbert's frenetic "Pressure Drop," and he probably should have thought twice about letting Los Lonely Boys suck the funk from War's "Cisco Kid," but he still slings some signature Trigger riffs alongside the Holmes Brothers and matches Lucinda Williams' slow-burn emotion, phrase for soulful phrase. --Roy Kasten

Customer Reviews:
Willie fan.......2005-06-10
Great, great album. A great variety of music. Willie can sing with the best. By far, the best of his Friends compiliations.
All that talent under one roof..........AMAZING!!!.......2005-04-03
Willie just keeps kicking out those Fantastic concerts...big names and great tunes. Keith Richards, Kid Rock, Jerry Lee Lewis...absolutely worth every penny. I play this cd every single day!!!
UNPOLISHED GEM.......2005-02-26
Yes the announcer's voice should have been edited out but on the other hand it puts the concert into context and keeps you reminded that you're hearing an unpolished gem of a recording.
If you're a fan of Willie - and I am becoming one - you'll love the entire album. If you're a little more discriminating there are some tracks that you should forgive and forget but decide on those for yourself.
The highlights are the Carole King duet on Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, the beautiful Lucinda Williams duet on Overtime,Pancho and Lefty and Mama Tried with Merle Haggard, Stormy Weather with Shelby Lynne, We Had It All with Keith Richards, I'll Never Be Free with Lee Anne Womack and the last two all-band tracks that are just plain good fun.
Another reviewer commented on the house-band and it truly smokes, moving into and out of every style with no effort. If you want a good fun album this is hard to beat even if forgivably flawed.
Tonight You're Mine.......2005-02-16
This live outing from Willie Nelson & friends is a good set. To a great extent, I found the announcer's introductions over the music to be irritating with repeated listenings. I'd rather just hear the music and look @ the insert to see who's playing. However, the music is great! Toby Keith & Willie smoke on the openers, "Georgia On A Fast Train" & "Ramblin' Fever" with Joe Walsh on guitar. Willie gets soulfully blusey with Al Green's somewhat over-enthusiastic exclamations on "Rainin' In My Heart." Shelby Lynn is a talented artist who does a great croon on Willie's western swing version of "Stormy Weather." Pop icon Carole King joins Willie for the classic melody "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow." This track was the reason I picked up the CD & did not disappoint as these two musical veterans blend lovingly onstage. Lee Ann Womack (whose new CD "There's More Where That Came From" is great!) does a lively job with Willie that makes it seem that they're having great fun together. Townes Van Zandt's often-covered tune "Pancho & Lefty" is given a great reading with Willie, Merle Haggard & Toby Keith. Willie joins Lucinda Williams on "Overtime," a song she recorded for her stunning "World Without Tears" CD. Their voices blend seamlessly, expressing great longing. "Comes Love" is a great standard that's been recorded from everyone from Toni Price to Peter Cincotti. Here, Rickie Lee Jones' jazzy swagger joins Willie Nelson for a spirited version of this classic standard. This live set is interesting to see how Willie blends with a diverse group of artists. Enjoy!
The CD's kind of like Texas weather...........2005-01-11
If you don't like the song, just wait and the wind will change. This CD is not only a tribute to Nelson's versatility, but his friends in the music business as well. Those of you who thought he just did country---think again! He swings into reggae with Toots from Toots and the Maytalls, the blues with the Holmes Brothers, and hard-bitten folk rock in a rare cut with Lucinda Williams. Whatever type of music you like, you're going to find something here that appeals to you.

Customer Reviews:
I can't give a title that doesn't sound exaggerated.......2007-03-31
While continuing their James Hilton theme (I still need to read some of his works), FODM departs a bit from the remarkably well-flowing, "concept album" feel of both On the Shore and Random Harvest to deliver us a more diverse collection of tunes. We get the power and grandeur of "Landfall", the space-rock of "Heart of Darkness", the sweeping beauty of "Somewhere Over the Waves", the desert relaxation of "Two Hundred Miles", and an acoustic reworking one of my all-time favorite songs "Dusk" (from Random Harvest); they even give us a couple of lounge pieces, "Departure" and "All in the Golden Afternoon", that you would expect to hear on Retrograde or Artardecer.
But don't worry, through all the changing moods FODM are still able to pack more atmosphere and emotion into every song than most bands can pack into a career's worth of albums.
Best record yet!.......2006-01-10
The band just gets better and better. This record is a bit different from the others as it is decidedly more "jammy." But not in the wanky Phish kind of way, more like the Thelonius Monk kind of way. Jam with a direction. Furthermore, Bill Elm's steel takes a bit of a rest while Mike Semple covers an array of different guitar tones and styling all over the record. The melodies are at their greatest on this record. It's a beautiful and painful record. I am always surprised how much emmotion FoDM can express in the absence of lyrics...especially concidering the sad state of lyrical prowess in indie music today.
Lost Horizon is a soundtrack to whatever you want it to be. It evokes arid desert dreams and congures an imagination that usually goes underutilized.
Lost Horizon is a wonderful record. It really showcases who the kings of instrumental rock are. (Ackem! Explosions in the Sky Ahckem!)
Buy this record. You won't be disappointed because it's really good. That's all you need to know.
A real treat - ANOTHER 2005 album from FODM.......2005-12-11
Lost Horizon continues FODM's "new" direction, and in my opinion it's a real breakthrough. The earlier-era lonesome spaghetti-western sound is long gone (although the recent Live at Club 2 features some great renditions of those earlier songs), and has been replaced with more ambitious songwriting and experimentation. Whereas their earlier releases used to feature mostly Bill Elm and his amazing console lap steel, this latest offering is all about Mike Semple's outrageously underrated guitar playing, and the band gels into a much more cohesive sound as a result. "Somewhere Over The Waves" is an organ-based mood piece that is FODM at their haunting best, one of those songs (like A Place In the Sun's "Broken Bell") that you wish was twice as long as it is. "Two Hundred Miles" has a fine sounding acoustic guitar, "Dawn" features an evocative nylon-string, and "All In the Golden Afternoon" is as expansive and epic as you can get. Only "Heart of Darkness" swerves into the cacaphony that (I think) mars some of their stuff; but the new version of Random Harvest's "Dusk" seems more fully realized somehow. The last piece, "Departure," harkens back to the band's earlier style, almost as a farewell. It's a great way to close the album. The vast majority of this album is beautiful and disquieting, and is by far my favorite since "On the Shore."

Amazon.com essential recording
Between 1963 and 1968, Oscar Peterson released a series of six albums for the German MPS label. Recorded before a live audience in an elegant, old Black Forest villa, the albums had a looser, more intimate feel than the commercially minded projects he cut with American producer Norman Granz. This album consists of previously unreleased performances from '65 to '67. On the later sessions, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen are replaced by Sam Jones and Bobby Durham, respectively. Peterson reins supreme on the keys, leavening his baroque flourishes, which eventually came to characterize his playing, with convivial good vibes. --Rick Mitchell
Customer Reviews:
Essential to any fan of jazz, swing, piano or music........2007-06-29
What a shock that Amazon no longer carries this one, an outstanding session even by Peterson standards. No doubt it's still in print in some pricey box collection for Peterson completists, but the broader listening public deserves better. This album, simply put, is as good as it gets, with Oscar in the company of bass and drums (rather than Herb Ellis' guitar). Recorded in Germany by Oscar's audiophile-jazz producer friend, Hans George Brunner-Schwer, the audio captures Oscar at full stride and his preferred Bosendorfer in all of its glory, before a small group of especially engaged, appreciative fans to insure that nothing is held back, phoned in, or cut short to suit short-attention spans. Another reason I generally recommend this one is that it gives listeners a chance to hear Oscar in the company of two different rhythm sections--the tandems of Ray Brown/Ed Thigpen and Sam Jones/Bobby Durham. Without taking the least bit away from the former pair, Jones and Durham provide a gritty, unshakeable groove--especially since both of these specialized "ditch-diggers" couldn't care less about solo time.
Vintage Peterson.......2001-12-09
This is one of Peterson's finest efforts, although the disc set is hard to find. The reltively rare selections and their assembly form a complete work and allow the listener to experience the many aspects of his virtuosity. From the elegance and beauty of his unique chords that are the essence of Peterson, to the fast driving up-tempo tracks, you get to hear them without the annoying flourish and embellishment that distract in other recordings. This live performance captures Peterson at his very best, in his prime.
If you buy only one jazz piano CD- this is it.......2001-02-07
a jazz player once told me flat out that Oscar was the best. I dutifully shook my head yes and listened to a lot of his early stuff. Great talent but somewhat uninspiring arrangements. Then I stumbled onto this CD. If you know anything about playing the piano, you will listen to this performance with your mouth wide open, barely able to believe what you are hearing. His virtuosity and sheer "athleticism" are beyond description. This CD is simply a journey to another world.
Ah, so this is why the heavens created the piano..........2000-11-15
This is incredible. This is no longer jazz, but an entire genre of music in its own right, which swings so hard they had to lose the tapes, it seems. The version of Squeaky's Blues just takes your ears and your heart and rips them to shreds, and then it really gets going. Damn, this is good.
Superb Jazz.......1998-06-27
This C.D. contains some great music. The mix of familiar and new music is balanced. Oscar's piano ability is outstanding as well as the other musicians. Pardon the phrase, but it is a must have.

I WAS DISSAPPOINTED.......2005-01-12
Having heard Eddie and Ernie on the Deep Soul Tresures Series, I was looking forward to hearing this compilation of all their other hard to find stuff on this CD. I was dissappointed. They sound good, but their choice of a lot of their material was not that great. It's enjoyable but not essential stuff.
Like Sam & Dave, you'll love Eddie & Ernie.......2004-07-11
Quite simply, they were the other all-time greatest Soul male duo. This excellent retrospective contains 24 gut-wrenching soul classics...a number of them were previously unissued. Unfortunately, the tracks originally issued on Eastern (4 tracks) are hopelessly distorted.
All-in all, the track "Falling Tears (Indian Drums) recorded for Columbia is worth the price of the CD. Just amazing.
Also, finally, 'Self Service" from 1964 (originally issued on the tiny Madley label and picked up by 20th Century-Fox Records) as "The New Bloods" is perhaps the only known soul ballad ode to masterbation! ("I don't have noone to love me....so I'll have to serve myself...")
