Afterglow by Sarah McLachlan is surprisely moving and wonderfully produced. I am not normally a McLachlan super-fan but some of her songs before this album are quite engaging. I decided to give this album a chance, standout tracks include: Time, Perfect Girl, Dirty Little Secret, Stupid, and Answer. Sarah's voice has improved and her lyrics are at its strongest. I could listen to the track, Time all day long, it sucks you in after the first 20 seconds, amazing! So whether you hate or love her, Afterglow will have you bathed in it for awhile. Enjoy!

I know that this review won't be very helpful, all I can say is that I love this album. Been listening to it for a couple of years now, and it's a fave when I'm in a mood to be mellow. I am giving this five stars so that amazon will recommend more music like this in my personal recommendations. Same with Fumbling Toward Ecstasy.

Italian Amercans--a must buy.......2007-07-28

As an USAF Air Attaché, I played this music at many a dinner party with a surprising amount of interest and positive comments from my foreign colleagues--often asking for copies of the music.

As a child of the 60's, these songs resurrected long-lost memories of great Italian music that was at one-time almost prevalent in the entertainment industry. I am proud that our culture produced these great songs, hope you are too! I still often listen to this music at dinner while enjoying a glass of great Italian wine.

We bought this CD for our daughter's wedding. After reviewing it, we could have saved our money. The version of Funiculi sounded like the Salvation Army band and it was totally lifeless. Lou Monte's Hey Gumbaree (it is actually Eh Cumpare in Italian--that should have given it away) was awful, and he consistently butchers the Italian language in all his other songs (annoying, I mean, couldn't he have learned the right pronunciation?).

While Perry Como and others have melodic voices (and very wisely sing in English because they don't know Italian), these are '50s versions of the songs, for the most part. While you have to appreciate them, they are really old and reflect the '50s type of instrumention and style. Would have loved to have heard all these songs done in a fresh and original way. Soldi Soldi was our favorite by far, and that is why we gave the CD two stars.

Could have gone to the library for this one.

Thanks for letting me voice our opinion. We are a big Italian family and just spent hundreds of dollars buying every CD out there for our daughter's wedding and figured we would share our opinion with others.

From the late great Luther Vandross to Etta James, this Cd has a Truly great Variety of classic wedding type songs. You can just about play it from beginning to end. Classics like "you're the best thing that's ever happened to me"is the perfect song for a couple that has been together for many years and is finally tying the knot!( ideal for an Anniversary song too! ) "At last" is a ditto and is perfect for the recessional..."Thru the fire" by Chaka Khan is a beautiful ode to the love of your life that says...U will have a partner thru thick and thin...another classic that must be mentioned is Anne murray's "could i have this dance"...mother/ son dance=this one is perfect for! Taylor Dayne's "I'll always love you" is as pretty of a song as i've ever heard aswell as "You are my Lady"...perfect for a first dance. "You're the inspiration" has been used for the father/daughter dance at several of my weddings ...Ok ...and of course it has Heatwave's "always and forever" on it too...a classic at any wedding. From top to bottom this Cd has Magic!

Bought this CD for ideas for songs in my wedding. I was a little disapointed that it didn't give me good ideas for my wedding. It had better songs on it just for classic love songs.

Being a romantic person this is a great CD. Light the candles, serve with italian food, good red wine, with the CD playing and you will have a great combination. Even without the food this is a great CD to sing along to..at home or in the car. don't pass this one up!

Heart Break..........2007-06-02

Who would have ever thought that a small song done for a hum-drum movie would have led to such a classic pairing of performers and producers? Let me refresh your memories:

In 1987, the movie "Dragnet" starring Dan Akroyd and Tom Hanks hit the theatres. All in all, it was a sad remake of a classic TV show. The only bright spot was a song on the soundtrack, a song that showcased 4 performers who were trying to redefine themselves after so much childhood success. That group was New Edition, and the song was entitled "Helplessly In Love". The thing that made this song so different was its composition. Instead of bubble-gum lyrics over a poppy-synth track, it was done with tight harmonies and layered music. This sound, created by producing phenoms Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis led us to the breakout album "Heart Break".

Not content with letting NE rest on their previous laurels, Jam and Lewis set them free with the confident, brash swagger that accompanied the boys in the latter part of their teen years. Starting off with a strong statement in the song "That's the Way We're Livin'" and jumping just as strongly into "This Is Where It All Started" got the album off to a rollicking start. That's when J&L and NE gave everyone a taste of their newfound soulful sound with "If It Isn't Love". What a great song, and definitely still as fresh today as it was almost 20 years ago.

Some of the filler tracks like "Crucial" and "My Kind Of Girl" are good to keeep the mood going, and then the album gives us its first complete surprise.

Let me state for the record (and I'm a 40 year old guy who's heard a lot of music) that "Can You Stand The Rain" is one of the best songs ever written. Period. I listen to this song even today and it wells me up. Jam and Lewis use Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill so effectively on the leads with Mike, Ricky and Ronnie backing them up with tightly layered vocals that anyone wanting to do a single song study of how to put together an R&B song could use this as a model. "Coming Home" slows the mood down even more to get us ready for "Boys To Men". Another great, unexpectedly soulful rendition.

I bought this album in New Jersey soley on the strength of "If It Isn't Love", and listened to it start to finish twice on my drive back to the Northern Virginia area. It still has a place near my CD player, and many of the songs occupy a place in my heart. There are probably 3 albums to purchase if you ever want to completely experience the genious of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis; Hearsay by Alexander O'Neal, Affair by Cherelle, and this one. It is not to be missed.

1988's Coming of age classic..........................2006-06-25

The summer of 1988 belonged to New Edition and Bobby Brown. For NE, it started with the " If it is'nt Love " video. That video had every teenage ladies man practicing those dance steps in hopes of getting one of the dime pieces that New Edition could get. Other hits includes Crucial, Coming Home, Boys to Men, NE Heartbreak and You're not my kind of girl. The only down side to this joint is that it did not have the NE Heartbreak remix on it. This album also introduced Johnny Gill who was a perfect vocal match to Ralph and Ricky's high pitched voices.

5 Stars Without A Doubt.......2006-06-03

In my opinion this is New Edition's best CD and one of the best Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis productions to date during the height of their production genius.

I grew up on New Edition and even though Bobby Brown left for his own short lived success, thank goodness it didn't effect the longevity of the group and bringing in Johnny Gill was a "Perfect Combination". Not only did it add greatness to the group but later helped his own solo career which was mediocre before he joined New Edition.

This CD came out when I was in the 9th grade and lastest through my 10th grade year. I loved all of the singles that were released but it wasn't until the mid to late 1990's that I finally heard the whole CD. My favorite song is "Boys to Men". I'm assuming that's where Michael Bivens got the name for the group "Boyz II Men". I liked the song then and even more now that I have a son. I think every young man should listen to it. The lyrics are very uplifting.

I give this CD 5 stars without a doubt.

This album contains my favorite song in the world "Can You Stand The Rain". If you were a teenager in the late 80's then you have to remember this album.If It Isn't Love was a staple Nu Jack club hit. But for me the song that made this Album was Can You stand The Rain. This track showcases Ralph's silky voice and New Edition harmony.Johnny Gill was a perfect addition to the group as he brought a more mature sound. This is a must have.

It's got to be a bit strange for Vonda Shepard. This is her album--she sings and writes the songs--and yet she takes second billing to the TV show that features her as the singer in the unnamed bar. Granted, Shepard had released many solo albums on her own before Ally made her a known commodity, and the songs here are geared to mirror Ms. McBeal's many moods. Here, Shepard is helped out by an impressive cast. Her backing band includes drummer Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello), bassist Davey Faragher (Cracker), and guitarist Val McCallum (Peter Gabriel), and her guest vocalists include the Reverend Al Green for a stunning duet on Lulu's To Sir, with Love," and the Indigo Girls' Emily Saliers on "Baby, Don't You Break My Heart Slow." Rounding out the anthemic originals are covers of Don McLean's "Vincent," Peter & Gordon's "World Without Love," and the Isley Brothers' "This Old Heart of Mine" that unfortunately serve to insinuate that Shepard is not a singer-songwriter but merely a cover girl. --Rob O'Connor

I've always loved this cd - I've always loved the music on Ally McBeal. Recently, I had a beach party - this cd was on my mix - random - everyone went wild! What is this???? Now I've bought 10 copies for all my friends because they love it as much as I do. Vonda Shepard's voice and rhythm are absolutely awesome-what a perfect mix of voice and music. Thank you, Vonda!

An Emotional Experience In Song.......2003-03-15

This is, without question, the greatest compilation of songs from David E. Kelley's "Ally Mcbeal". Songs taken from the third season, a pivotal season because Billy (played by Gil Bellows) dies of a heartattack. It is a time of great heartache and crisis in Ally Mcbeal's life. The romantic disillusion and overwhelming sadness truly makes quality music. Perhaps a lot of music listeners dislike sentimentality, and melancholia, but a lot of great songs in the twentieth century have been tinged with sorrow- Motown made various songs of heartbreak, Dan Mclean, Roy Orbison and various other artists. Grief and sorrow is a part of human nature and real life.

Ally Mcbeal's melancholia seems most poignant in the song "100 Tears Away" but perhaps most powerful in "Crying." These classic songs of woe are sung impressively by the very talented Vonda Shepard. Don Mclean's "Starry Night" is genuinely moving. All the songs are Vonda Shepard renditions, with a few ensemble help. But the sad magic of the show comes alive, making a vivid, lasting impression. This cd was a great way for myself to purge in my own sorrow- my heart was broken in an unsuccessful romantic relationship. Perfect for indulging in sadness (but only to overcome the sadness) are the songs "What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted", "Baby Don't You Break My Heart Slow" "This Is Crazy Now" and "I Know Him By Heart.".

This is a great collection sung by a relatively unknown singer. Her songwriting is highly commendable on "100 Tears Away" (one of the best songs on this album) and "Baby Don't You Break My Heart Slow". Covers like "Crying", "Sweet InSpiration", "To Sir, With Love" and "Vincent" are also highly listenable. What strikes me is her strong voice and ability to sing a song almost better than the original. She is definately refreshing and I am so sad that we won't be able to witness her artistry on "Alley" anymore, since it has just been announced it is canceled. Get this record and you won't be dissapointed, something to listen to on a cold winter night or just driving down a highway. I am so glad I took a chance on this recording.

As Good As The First One.......2002-02-07

After the success of their first release, the makers of Ally McBeal have released a second album featuring the fabulous Vonda Shepard performing songs from the hit TV show. Like the first album, this new release contains covers of many old favorites like "Someday We'll Be Together," "Crying," "World Without Love," and "This Old Heart Of Mine (Is Weak For You)". She also does a cover of "Vincent," but the third verse of the song is, sadly, missing. Also, like the first album, it contains songs written by Shepard: "100 Tears Away," about finding happiness through sadness, "Read Your Mind," a rather unextraordinary song about wondering what's in a lover's mind, "Confetti," about "children of elite trying to be street" in an attempt to be heard, and "This Is Crazy Now," about filling an empty space created by the loss of a friend. I'm not as big a fan of the songs that Shepard writes herself, but I do enjoy her renditions of "oldies" songs.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

While Rod Stewart was busy chasing American songbook classics up the charts in Cole Porter drag, 60's Brit-soul colleague Joe Cocker pursued a more contemporary and compelling set of standards. The material here stretches from the soulful American r&b hits that first inspired the gritty-voiced singer to their modern progeny, emotive ballads like REM's "Everybody Hurts" and the compelling studio/live takes of U2's "One" that bookend the album. Cocker revisits old inspirations Lennon ("Jealous Guy" recast as warm, Caribbean-rhythmed r&b) and McCartney (a grand, if less inspired "Maybe I'm Amazed"), but it's on more vintage material like "Chain of Fools" and Lieber-Stoller's "I Keep Forgetting" and "I (Who Have Nothing)" that Cocker truly invests his considerable interpretative instincts. Jeff Beck solos with tasteful, typically elastic lyricism on the latter, while fellow ax icon Eric Clapton torches "I Put A Spell On You" with his own bluesy fire. But as brilliant as Cocker and his session cohorts (who also include Steve Lukather and Dean Parks) often are, their efforts sometimes skid on C.J. Vanston's way-too-slick production; aiming for the middle of the road, Vanston instead drives material like James Taylor's "Don't Let Me Be Lonely" and Cocker's otherwise lovely read of "Everybody Hurts" towards a ditch. --Jerry McCulley

Joe Cocker's appeal has always lain in his poetic ability to dredge up and transmute the tragedy of loss and loneliness into powerful and beautiful dirges, and in the stark contrast between his ragged croak of a voice and a lush background of female vocals, wailing guitars, and slick orchestration. Listening to his songs, one feels as if someone has photographed the grittiest scene of urban despair -- a homeless addict contemplating suicide, perhaps -- and placed it in an ornate frame in a high-class gallery.

This CD contains all of the elements that have made Cocker so popular, and his selection of classic and contemporary songs is superb. A couple of the tracks may be a bit less successful than the rest, but all of them are heartfelt and soulful. While not as sublime as his albums of the late 60s and early 70s, this recording is far superior to some of the CDs he released in the late 90s and early 00s. It marks a clear return to form for the master of misery.

Gravel Elevator Music.......2005-12-17

Joe needs to stick to high energy rock. Except for "Chain of Fools", this album is all elevator music in a gravel pit. Get the "Ultimate Collection" instead.

I've been a Joe Cocker fan since Woodstock. I've always thought of him as a rocker. I'm also a huge blues fan and I must admit that I never noticed until Heart & Soul that Joe is one of the best blues singers around today and in that I include someone like Jonny Lang. His cover of One (both the in studio and live versions) is incredible. Sorry, U2, Joe now "owns" that song. Anyone who can take a Tom Jones song (I Who Have Nothing) and make it a blues tune has to be a genius. Plus with the situation in Iraq, Joe does a heartfelt, emotional and most timely version of What's Going On. While taking away nothing from R.E.M., his cover of Everybody Hurts is also world class. With his raspy voice, it sounds like a different song. Thanks, Joe.

Show me the heart, cos I don't hear no soul........2005-07-13

Let me preface this by saying I am an expatriate Yorkshireman who loved to go to the 'Black Swan' in Sheffield in my late teens to listen to Joe and his Blues band. Listening to this effort makes me shake my head in disbelief. The opening song-U2's'One', was never a strong piece of material and Joe does nothing for it, in my opinion. The blandness continues with 'I who have nothing' and a dirge-like version of 'What's going on?' which has had every piece of emotion taken out of it. You almost get the feeling he was reading the lyrics while recording it. Perhaps the worst track is McCartney's 'Maybe I'm Amazed' and I had to smile when he sings the lyrics "maybe I'm a lonely man who's in the middle of something that he doesn't really understand", because it seems to me that musically in this mish-mash that he really doesn't.
The production is clinical to the extreme, to the point of being sterile, and I got the feeling that this album was put together just to highlight the talents of the guest guitarists. To me the most noteworthy is the solo by Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter who rescues 'Chain of Fools'. Jeff Beck excels in 'I who have nothing', and Steve Lukather rises above the murk of track 3, the Marvin Gaye song that once meant something. The best track is 'I put a spell on you', which is more 'Joe' than the other stuff, and an adequate solo by 'Slowhand' makes this song listenable. After that, to paraphrase Neil Young "it starts off slow and fizzles out altogether". The 2 stars were for the guitar solos.
The 'bonus' track is a live rendition of 'One' in Belgium. Some bonus.
I was given this CD as a Birthday gift. I'm trying to figure out what I have done wrong to the person who gave it to me.
I had to chuckle when one reviewer said that Joe is at the peak of his career...I would say you are 20 years late on that one, having seen him 16 times since 1969, that last time with Tina Turner in Ft Lauderdale, this latest offering is one that will probably make a 'swap-shop' pretty soon-for a 'Mad Dogs and Englishmen' CD to replace the one that's almost worn out.

These days people my age (mid 50's) are hard pressed to find any worthwhile new recordings to purchase. That is why I usually revert to buying anthologies. Joe Cocker's new studio release "Heart and Soul" is just about the best new album I have heard come down the pike in quite some time. To begin with, Joe Cocker is not some aging rocker whose skills have diminished and is just trying to hang on. Rather, Joe Cocker is still a very viable artist who according to my ears has not lost it one bit.
"Heart and Soul" offers the listener a dozen outstanding tracks including Joe's brand new single release "One" which was written by U2. Nice tune. Most of the rest of "Heart & Soul" features new arrangements of some very familiar hits sung in the inimitable Cocker style. I found Joe's treatment of the old Ben E. King classic "I (Who Have Nothing)" to be absolutely stunning. I also was moved by his rendition of James Taylor's "Don't Let Me Be Lonely" and by "Every Kind of People" a hit made famous by Robert Palmer in the late 1970's. A very underrated song! Joe Cocker also does a surprisingly fine job on Marvin Gaye's groundbreaking composition "What's Going On". And I would be remiss if I failed to mention his terrific remake of the old Screamin' Jay Hawkins song "I Put A Spell On You". Joe is one of only a handful of artists who could pull off that one off!
So whether you are in the market for some brand new music or find this disc attractive simply for old times sake "Heart and Soul" is sure to tickle your fancy. Unlike the embarrassing stuff Rod Stewart is churning out these days Joe Cocker has turned out an album he can really be proud of. I am quite confident it is a disc that you will play again and again. Highly recommended!!!

One of the best debut of the nineties.......2006-02-23

Donell Jones burst one the scene in 1996 with an amazing debut in the form of My Heart. The first single a remake of Stevie's Wonder's Knocks Me Off My Feet was cool but Mr. Jones really showed his skills with the ballads I Want You To Know, No Interruptions and Natural Thing. If you don't have this album in your collection then you're really missing out.

I've been a fan of Donell for a little while now, but for some reason never got this cd. Why?? It's great. I bought it recently and really love it - as much as all the other albums of his. He's got a great smooth voice and the tracks on here are good for his voice. He sings with lots of emotion and he can belt them out when need be. I especially love Wish You Were Here, Believe In Me and Knocks Me Off His Feet. I'm telling you - as a fan of R'n b and of Donell, do not do what I did, and wait so long to get this. This should be mandatory listening. You'll love it too.

My Heart.......2006-01-09

This is classic r&b by a wonderful new talent - an excellent debut. The mood of the disc is definitely mid-tempo to ballady songs but Donell's beautiful voice carries it well. I was also impressed by the fact that he wrote/co-wrote/produced and arranged 98% of this disc.

It's a shame it wasn't as heavily promoted as his 2nd disc was because as I listened, I don't recall hearing any of these songs. I like the fact that on this disc, he sings about the feelings of love and what's in his heart as opposed to the new jack "bump & grind" explicit lyrics that are staples in so many songs today (particularly male r&b artists).

My favorite tracks: I WANT YOU TO KNOW (beautiful love song), MY HEART; YOU SHOULD KNOW, KNOCKS ME OFF MY FEET (can't top Stevie Wonder but "A" for effort), IN THE HOOD (remix).

I'd highly recommend this disc to those who are seeking good r&b music with heartfelt lyrics & smooth grooves w/o sexually explicit lyrics.

This is my favorite album by Donell Jones! You can listen to it straight through(unlike many artists' albums). He really gave his heart in this album.

Donell Jones seems to have been swept under the rug when it comes to R&B. Too bad, if only people realized how good of an artist he really is. This album started the Donell Jones legacy and till this day i still play it all the time. One of the greatest R&B albums of the 90's, if not 'the' greatest in my opinion.

UES!!!

I have been searching for this song ever since I heard it after Hurricane Katrina. Low and Behold! Aaron Neville appeared on IMUS IN THE MORNING!

Now I know who sings this song and where to listen. It is an all time favorite now. I listen to it all the time.

Desert island CD.......2006-09-12

This is one of my desert island CD's (you know, if you could only take 10 CD's on a desert island which would you take)I have owned it since its release and it never gets old. Aaron Neville's voice is like a cool breeze on a hot day. I especially enjoy Aaron's versions of Randy Newman's Louisiana 1927 and Jimmy Buffett's La Vie Dansant. However the crowning jewel is the Ave Maria - Aaron sings this beautiful prayer with his heart and soul. This CD is aptly titled - it certainly warms my heart each time I listen.

Aaron is a "new" artist to me. (Living in a bubble?) I heard his heart-breaking version of "Louisiana 1927" right after the tragedy and have played it almost every day since. Then I "discovered" "Ave Maria" and "Amazing Grace" and am a true fan. I'll wait for his next recording with anxious anticipation.
