Substitute grits for glitz, soul for sheen, and wry humor for mythic self-regard, and the Amazing Rhythm Aces could have been the Eagles. Though they didn't fly as high commercially, the Aces' blend of rock, country, down-home rhythm & blues, and even gospel continues to satisfy on this combo reissue of the band's first two mid-'70s albums. "Third Rate Romance" remains the Memphis band's signature song and major pop hit, while "The End Is Not in Sight (The Cowboy Tune)" anticipated the changes in commercial country a couple of decades down the road. Rhythm aside, the key to the band's appeal is frontman Russell Smith, whose songs and singing transcend musical boundaries with amazing grace. --Don McLeese

3 out of 5 stars Nice singers, good for nostalgic Soul fans!.......2007-03-06

This CD is a good addition to your 70s Soul collection if you also like The O'Jays, Spinners, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Isley Brothers and/or The Main Ingredient, Four Tops, The Dramatics and any other of those wonderful Soul bands that ruled the "classic" Philly and Motown sound.

4 out of 5 stars A must for any CD collection.......2007-03-04

I was only 7 years old in 1972 when CB&SR were in their short lived hey-day. But even at 7 years old the sounds of R&B and Edward's voice was the icing on the cake for my love for great soul music along with Stevie Wonder, The O-jays and many more. Having this CD in my collection now not only brings back great memories but makes me appreciate the soulful sound and great lyrics written by the Cornelious Brothers. I only wish they were still going. I recamend getting this collection it is truly a great album and edwards voice is one of a kind even for a 7 year old kid in 1972.

4 out of 5 stars Where's their first Album?.......2005-02-17

I bought the Cornelius Bros.& Sister Rose first album on vinyl back in 1972. It was one of the few albums produced that didn't have a bad cut on it. The majority of the songs on this CD were on that album, but it just makes me miss the first album all the more. Why hasn't Rhino or someone else picked up on this group and re-released the first album on CD?

The only thing I really wanted the Sukiyaki song to play for my students in Japanese class. It turned out it was fun to hear Boogie Oogie Oogie again and I enjoyed some other songs too.

3 out of 5 stars bobbyohyeah.......2005-08-16

YES they were a great band and YES we want to hear their songs remastered to the finest quality but WHY OH WHY would you remaster short versions?? I have to wonder what record company phillistine would remaster disco classics like Boogie Oogie Oogie and Rescue Me as single edits only and not the original extended versions. Collectors of disco music want complete versions. Next time get it right please or dont bother.
Three star rating for the greatness of the artists and the budget price of the CD but true fans should question whether it is worth purchasing.

Taste of Honey were a Bad Duo.these Sisters threw down on there Instruments&brought alot of flavor with there vocals.they got songs that you know anywhere you go.you can groove to them&then get Mellow to them.

5 out of 5 stars Taking me "back in the day...".......2002-06-01

OMG, I loved A Taste of Honey when I was in high school (during the late '70s). Recently, I've been nostalgic for those kinder days and I've been purchasing quite a few classic CDs...I found this and purchased it immediately! I'd forgotten how truly beautiful Janice Marie Johnson's vocals are on songs such as "I'll Try Something New," (cover of a Smokey Robinson tune), "Sukiyaki," and "Rescue Me".

Whatever happened to these ladies? I think they still have a lot of good tunes in them...

    5 out of 5 stars A Patti Classic.......2006-11-15

Def Jam dropped the ball promoting this CD which is one of the top 5 my favorite Patti CDs. On this Cd, Patti sings classic songs that have been recorded by other artist. Not that Patti needs to sing other people's songs, but when she does you can't help appreciate her talent and notice how other singers pale in comparison to Ms Patti.
I don't know another artist out there who has the ability to make a song their own as Ms. Patti Labelle does and that's exactly what she does on this CD. Patti has a great sense of timing, an ability to improvise like no other, a voice that has the ability to do things that most singers only dream of, a great ear for harmony, and her participation on backgound vocals often create magical moments.
There are so many great moments on this CD and many unexpected ones too.
I happen to like the second half of the CD. The first half is good, but to me Patti really shines on the last 6 tracks. I love love love "I'll Write a Song for You". "Your Song" with Elton John is excellent as well as the Pretender's "I'll stand by you". I cant end the review without mentioning great renditions of "Silly", "You're Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else", "Land of the Living", "He's Out of My Life", "Love Dont Live Here Anymore". I cant imagine why more of these songs werent singles, they are well done and Patti shines on this Cd...buy it!

    2 out of 5 stars Why?.......2006-10-07

This recording is just ok. I didn't see why she needed to do a cover cd patti is so much better than this and it's not that she is singing the songs just ok it's just that she doesn't add anything different to them to make me say yeah thats it. make the next recording will be the one i can enjoy until then i guess i will put "flame' my favorite patti cd.

2 out of 5 stars She has tried....her best !.......2006-04-20

She has tried her best and I admire her for the effort.
She sings with her heart , but ...I like some of her old stuff.
If you like her , you should listen to another great Lady who is the only one who can match her nowadays , Regina Belle.
Try her latest release,"Lazy Afternoon",and then let me know :-)

4 out of 5 stars The Goddess of Sound.......2006-04-13

Who else but Labelle would dare cover classics "Love Ballad" from Anita Baker and "I Can't Make You Love Me" from Bonnie Raitt on a single album? Patti testifies to her goddess diva status by the sheer audacity of this album's song list. She's amazing here, as always. My favorites are "Silly", "Stand By You", "YGMMLSE", and "I Can't Make You Love Me." Even Labelle knows if she's going to cover Bonnie Raitt's signature song, she better bring her A game. It took a couple of listens for Patti's version to hit me because it is so different from Raitt's understated masterpiece, but Patti delivers a brilliant, deeply personal, heartbreaking new interpretation of this very great song. This album is about just that - the supreme goddess of sound putting her personal stamp on some of the best songs ever written.

5 out of 5 stars Thank God for Patti LaBelle.......2006-02-24

Patti is the greatest on all her albums and on her show!

5 out of 5 stars Great Recordings with a twist.......2006-08-03

This CD is full of jazz in spite of the fact that I have associated most of the performers with classical music. This shows the diversity in their ability to perform a wide array of music that I never heard in the past from them.

If you like jazz without too much dissonance, this is a great CD to purchase. The interesting and awkward rhythms are the best parts of this CD.

You can have your own party just from listening to this music.

    5 out of 5 stars Bolling holds a swinging party & I won't leave.......2001-04-29

I had this CD around and was going to put it up for sale via Amazon Marketplace. I listen to other Bolling CDs. But, somehow I had "missed" the jivvy jazz in this recording.

As the sounds of "Baroque and Blue," 5:15, Track 1 started playing, the thoughts of selling the CD disappeared.

Bolling plays the piano superbly and Maurice Andre's trumpet radiates pure jazz notes. This is a clasical jazz CD. The 12 tracks tie together like movements of a symphony and there is a bewitching common theme, best heard in track 7 "Mystique." After Andre and Bolling swing in #7, track 8 "Canon," emerges with Jean Pierre Rampal's flute, golden. Guy Pedersen's string bass is crisp and Daniel Humair plays the drums with unhearlded pizzaz. And, how can one overlook the strumming of guitarist Alexandre Lagoya?

This is one of the best jazz or instrumental CDs I have ever heard. I normally listen while writing and use the sounds as background music. Lagoya's contribution to #9, Tendre, matching Rampal's clarity is mystical. So, I am enjoying each note and marveling at the classical synergy displayed.

The cover notes cite "recipes from Martha Stewart's "Entertaining" and her other best-selling books on food and lifestyle." Sure enough, Martha has a menu: 1. Cocktails & Sparkling Water...the CD's sounds sparkle. 2. Crudites with Anchovy Mayonnaise, complete with the recipe. 3. Chicken on Skewers, also including what to use & how. 4. Prosciutto and Figs: Anyone can lay this dish out. 5. Cornmeal-Fried Oysters: The recipe is for 2 dozen.

So, a person can buy this album (just) to get great recipes for dishes to accompany superb jazz. The recipes are simple to follow and delicious to read. One can buy the CD for the delightful cocktails that Bolling presents. But here "one = two." Or, to put this in other words "With two you get eggroll." The eggroll is the delightful dish one savors listening to the music while nibbling on the chicken & oysters. Magnifique!

    ...

    4 out of 5 stars Class Act.......2000-11-19

Very entertaining, classy music that I can listen to anytime, best of all with friends and suitably classy nosh!

Esther Phillips was 14 when she first began hitting the R&B charts; this collection of recordings for Lenox, Atlantic, and Roulette finds her trying to maintain her success in the face of changing trends. The stylistically diverse material and arrangements are held together by Phillips's powerful voice and vulnerably intuitive phrasing; among the highlights are smoky covers of Beatles and Stones ballads ("And I Love Him" and "As Tears Go By," respectively), remakes of Nashville hits ("Release Me," "Am I That Easy to Forget"), the sophisticated soul of "Some Things You Never Get Used To," and the jumping "Cry Me a River Blues," with Phillips free-associating verse after verse of the American songbook from Bessie Smith to Julie London. --Rickey Wright

      2 out of 5 stars Esther's Mellow Mojo.......2005-02-23

As the title indicates, this collection does not include her 1950's hits (as "Little Esther") or her later work on Kudu and Mercury (but contrary to the title, the songs were recorded from 1962 to 1971). The songs included are her recordings for Lennox, Atlantic, and Roulette.
This non-chronological compilation consists of mostly pop, jazz, and R&B ballads; the soulfully-funky bluesy-rock of "Mojo Hannah" is an anomaly. Includes several live recordings on second disc. Booklet includes essay by David Nathan, chart rankings, and track info. Like most compilations, this 2-disc set could have easily contained more tracks.
For those unfamiliar with Esther Phillips, her voice is a combination of Billie Holiday and an Ike-era Tina Turner, with a little bit of Dinah Washington, Ann Peebles, and Macy Gray thrown in for good measure. Her musical style is even more diverse: everything from jazz standards to country songs to pop & rock tunes by the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, and Bob Dylan.
Don't buy this if looking for another Etta James or Ruth Brown or "Big Mama" Thornton or Koko Taylor or Irma Thomas. Esther is very much a transcendent recording artist - similar to Nina Simone. And don't expect to jam; be ready to groove, `cuz this is music to chill to. (For something more funky, try her 1970s recordings)

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating Overview of an Aimless Period.......2002-11-21

Does it even the score if Atlantic was as misguided and directionless with the great Esther Phillips as Columbia was with Aretha Franklin?

The earliest work on here was recorded for independent label Lenox records under the tutelage of Kenny Rogers' brother Leland Rogers (later responsible for the 13th Floor Elevators!). This material is an excellent mix of country/soul in the style popularized by Ray Charles. If, like me, the only version of "Release Me" you have ever heard is the sappy Engelbert Humperdinck take, Esther's offering will be a revelation. Not even the terminally square Anita Kerr Singers in the background can damage this fantastic performance. However, once Atlantic got its mitts on Ms. Phillips she was put to work on lounge/supper club things with overblown showbiz backings. She's good at this material, but this is unquestionably NOT what Esther Phillips is all about. While the person writing the annotations seems to think that she transformed Lennon/MacCartney's "And I Love Him" and Jagger/Richards' "As Tears Go By," her versions sound very ill at ease. They make me want to go back and listen to "Release Me" again.

Things improve dramatically with the second disc. There's a smoking sex-changed version of Percy Sledge's signature song ("When a Woman Loves a Man"), a set of timeless live cuts that finally unleash all the blues in Esther's voice, and a perfect update on the country/soul approach with Bob Dylan's "Tonight, I'll Be Staying Here With You." Ah, but by the time of this last track, Esther had moved to Roulette Records and been reunited with Lelan Rogers who obviously had not forgotten how to produce her. Along the way, Esther places her inimitable stamp on "Moody's Mood for Love" and a string of really decent late 1960's/early 1970's singles. After hearing this occasionally bewildering collection, you have to marvel at how well her musical career was taken in hand by Creed Taylor in the 1970s.

The annotations are great and include some very funny stories about the woman. The sound quality is up to Rhino's usual excellent standard.

5 out of 5 stars In response to music fan from LA.......2000-10-13

The title of the song you're looking for is "Home is where the Hatred Is". This song was originally done by Gil Scott Heron, but Esther's version is more powerful.

      5 out of 5 stars What a discovery!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......1999-08-20

Thanks to amazon.com I had ordered this beautiful CD thinking its just another obcure diva, but I can't stop playing it again and again, since this is realy awesome collection. She is like a little crazy sister of Dinah Washington, Nina Simone and Carmen McRae, possesed very strong, recognisable voice and a style that could be emoployed in very various musical settings. It is little painfull to listen how desperately her producers wanted to find right direction for her, because she was such a talent that couldn't be put in one category.I love her early country recordings and I think she was really great doing just that. But than comes the blues. And then disco. If she is still alive, who know what she could be up to?

      5 out of 5 stars Bolling's Greatest Hits.......2007-05-13

If you haven't heard Claude Bolling's music, this is the CD you want to buy first. Not only does it have the best tunes of all his CDs each tune shows which CD it came from.

I love playing a Bolling tune and asking a friend is this Classical or Jazz? They'll always say it sounds like Classical and then it shifts to Jazz. Everyone that has heard his CDs goes out and buys it.

      4 out of 5 stars Smart Jazz.......2006-03-08

A clever and talentous work on the pulse of jazz, mixing it with classical music.

      4 out of 5 stars A Flutist's Intro to Bolling.......2002-10-20

Get this cd if you want to hear Bolling's works for flute before deciding if you would like to perform them. A great cd overall, maybe another brave flutist would like to redo these works? Although the late Jean-Pierre Rampal was known for doing 'the Picnic Suite' and 'Suite For Flute and Piano' I would like to add another artist to my collection.

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing Collection of Artist's & Bolling Compositions.......2001-05-01

Seems as here exhibited that the best of classical and jazz do have an area of union. Bolling combined the two by writing his suite for Flue and Jazz Piano, as well as these others for the specific performers.

How about writing a piece just for Jean-Pierre Rampal and Yo-Yo Ma?

Favorites include Baroque and Blue, Baroque in Rhythm and Rag-Polka.

This is music of a different sort, but most enjoyable. Bravo, Claude!

5 out of 5 stars Great Price, Great CD........2000-10-06

This is a collection of some great Claude Bolling pieces, including one of my favorites on track 4. If Bolling's style appeals to you, or if you are just looking for some good clever jazz, go for this. It's quite different, and it's good.
