Customer Reviews:
Pop Music: The Early years 1890-1950.......2005-08-15
Got this item for an older Aunt and she was thrilled with the early songs.
Great revue of early 20th century pop!.......2001-06-14
What I most enjoy about this compilation is the obscurity of so much of the music. Most compilations tend to include the same music that is available on countless other collections. This features a great deal of tunes I'm sure most people do not own and in many cases probably never even heard before! If you enjoy the unusual...the different...give this compilation a try. It's not necessarily music you will just want to pop into the CD player and listen to straight through, but put it on shuffle with some other cd's and you have a wonderful counterpoint to more familiar music.
Good survey of Post WW1.......2000-06-08
This album only has one track from 1890, Sousa's marching band. And another from 1911, Gene Greene. Then comes a 1918 recording from Nora Bayes. A wonderful compilation, but you might want to check out American Pop; Minstrel to Mojo, which does a better job with the 1910's.
A great intro to pre-war pop music.......2000-03-29
You know all those songs you hear and you think, "old"? Not new wave old, not even rockabilly old--REAL old. Well, they're here on this great budget-priced collection, the songs that you hear nowadays on commercials, period movies, and re-runs of ancient cartoons: "Yes, Sir! That's My Baby"; "If You Knew Susie"; "Makin' Whoopee"; "Happy Days Are Here Again"; "Brother Can You Spare a Dime?"; "Prisoner of Love"; "Buttons and Bows"; and even "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. These and other great songs are beyond classification--they are part of American culture, something that all Americans share no matter what genre of music they prefer. If you're at all interested in the history of popular song, check this out. You'll find it irresistable.

scattershot..........2004-03-04
Better than this scattershot collection, is the 3-CD box set "Rock & Roll Legends" featuring Bobby Darin, Gene Vincent & Jerry Lee Lewis (in fact, Lewis covers BOTH Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" and the Big Bopper's "Chantilly Lace"). Bobby Darin slams it out of the ballpark with a live version of "Splish Splash" AND provides the set's most sumptuous track with "Once Upon A Time." Pop in these 3 CDs and construct a perfect home stereo impromptu party set!

Album Description
By the early 1940's, Ivory Joe Hunter had become a prolific songwriter and piano player in the style of Fats Waller, but Hunter was a bit restless and had the idea of somehow combining the influences of the blues and country music that he had heard so much of in his native Texas. He looked to the West to fulfill his desire to record his own music, and in 1942 moved to the Los Angeles area. By 1945 he had become part of Johnny Moore and The Three Blazers and made his first record with the combo on his own label. In the late forties he founded Pacific Records, and then recorded for Four Star and then found real success with King Records. He had been plying mostly boogie woogie, but in 1949 he signed with MGM Records and recorded 'I Almost Lost My Mind' and other more pop and country-influenced material, long before Ray Charles had the idea. This is a wonderful album of country blues and a terrific addition to the fantastic Juke Box Hits series. 2005.

Customer Reviews:
1950's Rock N Roll Never Sounded Like This.......2002-06-18
This is by far the worst CD collection I have ever purchased. After taking off the cellophane wrapper (by then unable to return for a refund) in very small print on the bottom of the box it was noted that songs with an asterisk (*) were original recordings. The (*) appeared 8 times only--out of 100 songs! Note on the front of the box it reads, "Original Artists". If these are truly THE original artists of these songs, I need my hearing checked. You certainly fooled me when I purchased this collection! Buyer beware!
Average customer rating:
- I grew up dancing to his music. And still love it.
