All time Favorite!.......2006-07-25
I have never before written an online review of an album for any artist. But having just recently replaced many of my old Rick Springfield albums and cassettes with compact discs, I was reminded just how special these songs were -and are- to me. For me, Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet was where it all began. Yes, I know Jessie's Girl (from Working Class Dog) had already been a hit, and Rick was already a heart throb on GH by this time, but for ME, this album was a turning point. Of course Don't Talk To Strangers was what sucked me in...but upon listening to the rest of the album, I found the songs that would stand the test of time for me.
I know there have been many 'greatest hits' and 'best of' compilations of Rick's music. They all include hits from this album. "I Get Excited" is a great song. "Kristina" is an all time fave. We all loved Rick's tribute to his father, "April 24, 1981". But there is one song on this album that is not on those other compilations...and is a good enough reason to make sure Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet has a place in your music library. It's my all time favorite Rick Springfield song, "The American Girl". In 1982, I didn't understand all the lyrics. I was 11 years old. But I played this song so many times I can't believe I didn't wear a hole in the vinyl. Once I got this album on cassette, I rewound over and over again to hear my song. Those first few notes still get me every time!
I've listened to and loved Rick's music from the 70's all the way thru today, as he continues to write, record and release new music. His talent is ever apparent, his songs are infectious. He's an amazing performer live. I recommend checking out all of Rick's music if you're unfamiliar. Especially Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet, and "The American Girl" in particular!
Not A Spoiler.......2005-07-27
To quickly capitalize on the success of Working Class Dog, Rick Springfield released the appropriately titled Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet in 1982 less than year after its predecessor. Mr. Springfield doesn't reinvent the wheel as Success mimics the style of Dog. In fact Success improves on the sound. While nothing is as immediate and memorable as "Jesse's Girl", the album is sharper and better as a whole. "Don't Talk To Strangers" is a great pop song that peaked at number two. "Calling All Girls", "I Get Excited" and "What Kind Of Fool Am I?" are also solid tracks.
Rick's most consistent studio album........2005-01-24
Out of all of Rick's "Big 3" albums from 1981-83, I prefer this one the most. He basically takes the sound of his debut, WORKING CLASS DOG, and did a fairly soundalike album. However, this is anything but a copycat--most of the songs are good, the writing is a little more varied and there's no clunker (i.e. Inside Sylvia) to be found.
I would also say that it's his most "carefree". That's not to say there's not good songwriting or topics covered, but point blank, it's just alot of fun - very much in spirit with the Top 40/arena rock sounds of 1982, but also with some definite 70's power pop influence too.
1. Calling All Girls -- This is a great opening track, pretty much summarizing the feel of the whole album. Upbeat, fun, and, yes, alot of "girl" and girl-themed songs! It's a power pop number with a classic rock vibe, ala The Knack's "My Sharona".
2. I Get Excited -- Starting with a chugging guitar sound like on John Fogerty's 1985 hit "Rock & Roll Girls" this keeps the same general pace. It's also upbeat fun pop/rock, however, this is more of a happy love song - it almost sounds like the soundtrack to how a guy would feel goin' on a date, the anticipation, etc.
3. What Kind of Fool Am I -- Big hit that's fairly similar to the previous song. Heck, it could be the sequel if ya think about it - now dealing with a regretful loss/breakup. Starting as a Lionel Richie-styled 80's ballad, it becomes a semi rocker like some of Journey's slower songs (especially the twinkly keyboards). It's still overall happy sounding, though.
4. Kristina -- One of the harder rocking songs, this time about wanting to escape and get away somewhere (yep, with a girl named...). The guitars are a bit louder, with a fast-paced keyboard melody to back it up - I'd liken it to Loverboy's early 80's material (albeit with a more power pop influence).
5. Tonight -- We again slow it down a bit for the 2nd semi-ballad about two workers (in love it sounds like) who wanna get away. Again, this sequencing makes sense! I'd call this a slow rock number, falling somewhere between "Excited" and "Fool".
(NOTE: One of the characters in this song is named Jesse. I wonder if he was thinkin' of that one big hit? Nah, couldn't've been! ;))
6. Black is Black -- This is the only weak song on the first side IMHO. It's a medium tempo pop song, but it just feels like something is missing - it sort of plods along without much of a hook. It also has a slightly 'dark' sound to it.
7. Don't Talk to Strangers -- This huge hit is another I recall from the radio way back when. Close as Rick ever got to bubblegum, but it's so good I can excuse it! Mid-fast tempo pop, halfway between a love song and lite arena rock, it reminds me of Toto's "Rosanna" or the same-era Jackson Browne.
8. How Do You Talk to Girls -- Again, we know who Rick intended this album for.:) This is another fun song about guys hanging out one night and asking the preverbial question we all do (and, no, I don't know the answer either! LOL). More of a straight upbeat pop song with a new wave flavor.
[After this is where, to me, the album takes a bit of a downturn. Not to say the last 4 songs are bad, simply alot less memorable.]
9. Still Crazy For You -- A slower track, like a cross between a ballad and upbeat pop/rock. We have another love song of sorts with a keyboard melody. Style-wise, it's similar to "What Kind of Fool" but without the hooks. The moody guitar work reminds me of Mr. Mister's "Broken Wings".
10. The American Girl -- Starting off ballad-like and turning into a medium tempo, 70's rock-styled pop song, we're again dealing with a story of a certain girl (i.e. "the American girl, she's breakin' hearts. She's a mystery to me").
11. Just One Kiss -- A more uptempo take on the love song style of the past two songs, although the slightly unique keyboard sound sets it apart a teeny bit, just saving it from mediocrity.
12. April 24, 1981 -- Not really a song, but a slow and brief passage, dedicated to Rick's (then) recently deceased father.
All in all, I consider this to be his strongest overall album, although the following year's LIVING IN OZ (with it's harder rocking sound and more serious subjects) is pretty close behind.
Spirit of the 80's.......2004-08-31
Although I thought that Working Class Dog was a better album, I thought that Success was a wonderful follow-up. And let's be real here, Rick was not trying to win an Oscar with either of the albums. The 80's were a fun time and the songs reflected that - the lyrics didn't always make sense, but boy they sold the records! I can think of a lot worse lyrics that any of the songs that are on this album. When I listen to it, it takes me right back to high school. :) Thanks, Rick.
Success Hasn't Spoiled Rick - He Just Gets Better.......2002-07-31
Actually like this even better than Working Class Dog. Great beat - super hits evolved here - Don't Talk to STrangers can't be beat; American Girl is phenomenal & Rick's voice (still a touch of accent) is irresistible. A must for any Rick Springfield fan - a different sound -one that we've all come to love and appreciate and adore. Buy it - you won't be sorry.

The Oak Tree owner gets a Wooded Leg Chop!.......2007-07-28
You know, out of the 3 solo albums MORRIS DAY has, this was the most interesting. Although JIMMY JAM & TERRY LEWIS penned "Fishnet" and "Love Is A Game" from the sophmore "DAYDREAMING", Morris did this album alone without production or music or backing voices by the legendary TIME members!
That is about all the props I can give Mr. DAY. His album is nowhere better than any of THE TIME's four albums. Even JESSE JOHNSON's solos tell MORRIS DAY to "Walk". What gets me the most is "The Oak Tree". "The Bird" (Part 2) as RUN formerly of RUN-DMC would say. Good song to a point but if you're 'ready to debut' you don't go back in TIME to get ahead. High points: "The Color Of Success", a diss to PRINCE. Shocking! Of course PRINCE disses him back on SHEILA E.'s "ROMANCE 1600 LIVE" video with the 'wooded leg' chop! "The Character" is my favorite here. The music is a cross between R&B and new wave, sounds like ANDRE CYMONE. That's the first 3 songs. The other 3...
Well, that's my review. MR. COOL, made his best effort on this album and not the ones after this ("GUARANTEED" is frisbee bait). "THE COLOR OF SUCCESS" shows a man finally breaking out of the kingdom of PRINCE, but to go where?
Also, where is the originally here? 6 songs makes an album? THE TIME's first 3 albums have only 6 songs each album. MORRIS can't escape THE TIME. He keeps on doin' what he and they have done, again.
Morris Day Makes Us Party,But Is That It?.......2007-07-17
Morris Day ended his association with The Time after the groups wonderful Ice Cream Castle album and released his solo debut 'The Color Of Success' one year later. On the most superficial level the album is a great party album-you can slap it on,have a great time and think nothing more of it.The problem is the song quality itself. The album is credited as being Written And Arranged By Morris Day,and if that's true it's clear he obviously wasn't in that much creative control of The Time. These songs all go on forever and for the most part try at a very bland caricature of The Time's sound; The Time were fun,but one main reason for that was the fact that the musicians had such great chemistry and Morris's braggadoccio and humor glistened right through. In this case none of the songs ever do much FOR Morris;he has to do all the work with his additude holding down the fort and it just isn't a very secure platform.Which is too bad because Greg Phillinganes and Earth,Wind & Fire members Larry Dunn and Roland Bautista participate as musicians.Even the lone ballad "Don't Wait For Me" just meanders on for seven rather pointless minutes. The only truely worthy song on this recording is "Love Addiction" which has a cute melody and is a very catchy pop-funk tune.Other then that unless you want backround music for a dance party then this cruise might be a snooze for you.
HE'S JUST COOL!!!!.......2004-04-11
I LOVE THIS ALBUM IT IS COOL IT HAS SOME OF MY FAVORITES BY MORIIS DAY AS A SOLO ARTIST THE COLOR OF SUCCESS, CHARACTER, THE OAK TREE THIS IS A GREAT HAVE AND A MUST HAVE FOR ANY MORRIS DAY FAN. IF YOU LIKE THE TIME THEN I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND YOU TO BUY THIS ALBUM!!!! I AM REALLY SURPRISED HOW GOOD THIS ALBUM IS BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE DON'T DO VERY WELL BEING A SOLO ARTIST.
MORRIS IS THE MAN.......2001-08-07
Wow! This one takes me back. I love "The Oak Tree". No matter what anybody else says, he can still jam on his own without "The Time".This album proves it. After you've heard it you too will be doing "The Oak Tree". Go get 'em Morris.
He needs the Time...........2000-05-23
This is a marginal effort. Many of the songs just sound too similar to each other, and Morris shows very little of the creativity that drew us to the Time. His vocals are as solid as he can get (considering he can't really sing), but the music is terrible.
If you get this, it'll surely disappoint.

A Successful Soundtrack that's not complete........2007-05-12
Just about all the other reviewers have summed up this gem of a soundtrack. It's great for parties, it's great for driving, it's fun.
There's only one major problem I have with it. That's the fact that it's just not complete.
The main track that's instantly missing is "OH YEAH", by the band 'YELLO'. Also 'Walking On Sunshine' should deffinatley be on there also.
I purchased this album from Amazon a while ago and feel it's high time there was a re-released special edition containing all the missing tracks, especially 'Oh Yeah' as that's the first song that comes to my head when I think of the movie full stop.
Here's hoping it's re-released without the mistakes of the new Top Gun soundtrack.
Sean.
Funny and Entertaining.......2007-01-17
I found it interesting that Roger Ebert disliked this movie. This movie is not artistic or well-acted. The situations are ludicrous and unlikely. However, this movie offers well-executed comedy that is highly entertaining.
Michael J. Fox is Brantly Foster, a recent college graduate and the nephew of a business executive and his wife. Foster is intelligent and considers that Uncle Howard (Richard Jordan) might give him an opportunity in his company. A job in the mail room was not exactly the start that Foster had in mind.
Foster realizes that in a corporation the size of his uncle's that it is easy to do things without anyone realizing what is happening. So Foster sets himself up as newly hired executive Carlton Whitfield. Most of the executives accept Whitfield for what he seems to be. Foster's only significant problems are keeping Uncle Howard from finding out that he is also Carlton Whitfield and keeping his mail room boss from learning that he is not always delivering mail when his boss thinks he should be.
Foster/Whitfield soon encounters beautiful Christy Wills (Helen Slater), a young and highly intelligent executive, with whom he soon falls in love. Just as quickly he encounters Aunt Vera (Margaret Whitton) and has more than one amorous encounter, before and after finding out she is his aunt by marriage.
With Foster impersonating an executive while working in the mail room, courting Christy, who, unbeknownst to him, is also involved with Uncle Howard, and avoiding Aunt Vera as much as possible, the comedic potential is high, and the movie delivers. Much of the comedy is borderline slapstick, but much of it is also situational.
The highlight of this movie, as with many light comedies of the 80s, is the somewhat cliche happy ending in the face of apparent doom. While you know there has to be a happy ending somewhere, you have to be very attentive to catch the clues that suggest what the ending might be.
This movie is one of my favorite 80s comedies. While some critics have treated it harshly, the movie is fun to watch over and over because the situations, while predictable, are well done. Michael J. Fox at the peak of his career always brought a likable presence to the screen and his execution usually brings at least smiles and more often laughs.
Note that this version is a VHS tape and a DVD version also exists.
Frustrated.......2006-12-14
They ruined my favorite song on this album, "I burn for you" by putting lyrics into it. Just butcher a masterpiece. I loved it in the scene where Fox and Slater kiss for the first time...the duet is killing me. Anyone know any -good- voice remover programs?
Beware of "Auntie Vera".......2005-08-24
Brantley Foster (Michael J. Fox) new to the city is a young lad out of management school and looking for a job. Luck would have it that his Uncle Howard Prescott (Richard Jordan) runs a big corporation. He gets a chance to work his way up from the mail room.
In the process he encounters his uncle's wife "Auntie Vera"(Margaret Whitton.) She takes an instant shine to him. One of my favorite scenes is where he barely escapes Auntie Vera's clutches.
Soon he realizes that the only way to get to the top is start on a higher rung; finding an empty office and knowing the way the building system works, he takes on the persona of Carlton Whitfield male "Suit". He has a business type interaction with Christy (Helen Slater) a female "Suit". She has a quasi relationship with someone higher up.
Then the action starts. There is a "working" weekend in which everyone has a second agenda. To this weekend both Brantley and Carlton are invited.
What are Brantley and Vera cooking up?
Is Carlton getting too close to Christy?
Does someone else have plans for Christy?
Will Carlton meet Brantley?
And who is the "bimbo?"
Michael J. Fox's performance makes up for some big holes.......2005-01-29
I have concluded that I have probably used "The Secret of My Succe$s" as an example in class more than just about any other film ever made. Part of the reason is that most students have seen this film, so I am likely to get nods of recognition more than if I mention "Battleship Potemkin" or "Citizen Kane." This 1987 comedy tells the story of Brantley Foster (Michael J. Fox), who heads from his family's farm in Kansas to the Big Apple to put his business degree to use, but all he can get is a job in the mail room of a firm owned by a distant uncle (Richard Jordan).
Brantley comes up with a short cut but there comes a moment when he has to step up to the plate and impress a group of potential investors with a brilliant idea. We see Brantley explain but his idea to an enthralled group of rich businessmen, but...WE HEAR NOTHING. The script by Jim Cash & Jack Epps, Jr. and AJ Carothers ("&" does not mean the same thing as "and" in Hollywood) could not come up with anything good enough to carry the scene so they just turned up the music and figured if we had enjoyed the movie to that point and if we liked Michael J. Fox then we would just buy this and proceed to the happy ending. We do like Fox and we proceed to the happy ending.
However, contrast this scene with its counterpart in another familiar film, "The Karate Kid." That would be the great scene where Mr. Miyagi explains to Daniel-san that "sand the floor" means a whole lot than he ever imagined. That is the sort of scene that makes an entire movie (and gets an actor an Oscar nomination), and "The Secret of My Success" has a big hole where that scene should be and it really bugs me that the writers could not come up with something that proved our hero deserved to be the hero.
There are more holes in this film, which allow Brantley to create the persona of Carlton Whitfield, a young executive in a previous empty office (being in the mailroom has its advantages in such a scheme) and provide a fairy godmother in the person of his Aunt Vera (Margaret Whitton). Meanwhile, Brantley (or Whitfield, depending on your perspective), is interested in Christy Wills (Helen Slater), who is introduced in the most erotic display of drinking from a water fountain in the history of American cinema.
This is Michael J. Fox's movie and his engaging performance forgives most of the film's faults in this mindless comedy (mindless in that you will like the film if you mind the holes in it less). Actually, I was amazed to really see how many stupid things happen in "The Secret of My Succe$s," but I still like Fox's performance. If nothing else, this film is a reminder that Fox was a gifted physical comedien. The world of business does not come out looking well, but then it is hard to find too many movies in the past twenty years that make you think kindly towards big business.

Based on the Ernest Lehman novella and the 1957 film of the same name, this show aims to be a savvy, sharp satire of the gossip industry. Yet more often than not, it's oddly mushy, and a couple of the songs are almost Frank Wilderhornian in their witless, elephantine scope. John Lithgow, who plays ruthless gossip columnist J.J. Hunsecker, is not much of a singer, but Broadway has a history of nontraditional vocalists pulling through thanks to chutzpah, charisma, and interpretive chops--Elaine Stritch comes to mind. Lithgow isn't quite in that league, but he does a fine job nevertheless. And while Craig Carnelia's lyrics don't make much of an impression, Marvin Hamlisch (A Chorus Line) comes to the rescue with a score that's fairly swinging, even if it lacks the dark punch of Elmer Bernstein's score for the movie. A couple of variations on sultry ballads, "Don't Know Where You Leave Off" and "Rita's Tune," are notable. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Fair, but a Few Notable Songs.......2005-07-24
Based on a 1957 movie about the gossip industry, "Sweet Smell Of Success" falls a bit flat despite the pedigree involved.
Winner of the Best Actor Tony, John Lithgow ("Dirty Rotten Scoundrels") marvelously stars as the quick-witted "newsman" (con man) in control of the city's gossip rag. Brian D'Arcy James ("The Wild Party", "Titanic") and Kelli O'Hara ("The Light In The Piazza") are also terrific.
Marvin Hamlisch's score is quite jazzy, but doesn't remotely compare to his brilliant "A Chorus Line". There are, however, a few notable songs.
Best tracks include:
At The Fountain
Don't Know Where You Leave Off
Don't Look Now
The show did not do as well as its title may suggest, but the score is not bad and worth a listen.
Pretty good.......2005-05-10
I like this cast recording, but just after I heard the song more than twice. At first I didn't like it but then I realized that maybe John Lithgow doesn't have a "Broadway singing voice" but he is dominating the whole cd because of his charm and power. Brian D'Arcy James is terrific to just in Wild Party or Brownstone. Buy it you won't regret it.
SWEET SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS.......2003-07-30
Yes, this is a very good Broadway recording of a show that has comedy, thriller, and romance twisted into one. All of the songs are sung well, and sound crisp and energetic as the live performance onstage. The Highlights of the CD are definately Brian D'Arcy James & John Lithgow. Though John Lithgow doesn't have a very strong voice, he makes up for it in the quick-witted humor and laid-back New Yorker character that he plays. Brian D'Arcy James has a very unique and powerful singing voice that will soften your heart and almost cause you to get chill bumps at the incredible "At the Fountain" & "At the Fountain (Reprise)". Other favorite tunes of mine include the fast-paced opener "The Column", "Welcome to the Night", "For Susan", "One Track Mind", and "Break it up". Overall, a very classy and enjoyable recording. If you are a Broadway fanatic, this CD is a must.

If you are wondering how anyone could write a musical in which John Lithgow plays the leading role - buying the original cast album (SONYCLASSICAL SK89922) will not help much with the answer to that one! The answer is to write a musical around John Lithgow, who is to musicals what a black-hole is to space. Hmmm...I'll bet the producers thought they had a 'concept' show going: the leading man doesn't sing! Oh my God it has a history all the way back to Rex Harrison and MY FAIR LADY - it's brilliant! We'll bring in John Guare to give him some gutsy scenes so he can show his acting chops, and surround him with Broadway dancers doing angular angst-ridden choreography! Remember Marvin Hamlisch? Well, his big ballads can bring a tear to any eye and the audience can have the added thrill of imagining what the hit singles from the show will sound like once Barbra Streisand records them!
My impression of the score: Lot's of talented singers (minus John Lithgow) sing lots of beautifully shaped notes with un-striking lyrics by the very underrated Craig Carnelia.
Lithgow's big 11 o'clock number "Don't Look Now" stands square in the con-man number tradition, like DAMN YANKEES' "Those Were The Good Old Days", but it isn't half as funny or original as its model. And it should have come in the FIRST act to set up Lithgow's character. It needs a second-act number to top it in order for the audience to really believe that the Lithgow character is carrying the show.
Lot's of ersatz Latin numbers.
Rated: C+, buy it only if you believe that the person with the most CDs when they die - wins!

Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19
Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.
My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.
The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12
Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.
Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.
And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.
Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.
This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.
Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.
So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

Album Description
Errol Morris' adroitly assembled documentary film "The Fog of War" examines the career of Robert S. McNamara-- United States Secretary of Defense during the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations and whose tenure includes the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crises. Combining excerpts from 26 hours of interviews with McNamara, archival footage, filmed recreations, as well as newly declassified White House recordings Morris' filmmaking illuminates a national past that ominously parallels the contemporary political present. Morris reveals what previous biographies failed to investigatethe relationship between McNamara and the infamous United States General Curtis LeMay and their involvement in the firebombing of Tokyoalong with 67 other Japanese citiesin 1945. Errol Morris states "The easy thing to say would be McNamara is a bad guy, he did all these bad things...the story is more complex and far more interesting than I imagined. The disturbing thing is that this was a man with real ethical dimension who did something terrible."
As with music previously contributed to Morris' films, Philip Glass' score to "The Fog of War" effortlessly supports and enhances the film. The music, at times lyrical and at other times intense, deepens the horrifying images of war, highlighting the ambiguities of McNamara's characterand the consequences of his actions. Glass' music reinforces Morris' effort to understand the difficult ethical questions about governing and power raised by "The Fog of War".
Album Description
The acclaimed composer's score to the 2003 documentary by Errol Morris, their third collaboration. The film is subtitled ''11 Songs From The Life of Robert S. McNamara. Orange Mountain Music.
Customer Reviews:
(G)lassy.......2007-07-28
Some people hear things others never do. Of these, a few write them down. Of these, a small number create a theme and variations upon it that cohere and enthrall.
Philip Glass belongs to this minute group of human beings. Fortunately for us, recorded music exists to make his work available to all and at any time. His soundtrack for the Errol Morros documentary on Robert McNamara is a lesson in how to create film music that unobtrusively ups the ante of the film it graces.
Glass' score both intensifies and accelerates the movie. It is nearly impossible for one not to experience a quickened pulse when Glass pulls together--of all things, a snare drum, a bit of low brass, and a flute.
Ah, that flute. It floats in and out of track after track, bereft of its customary vibrato, a penetrating, entrancing reminder that something serious is going on in the film. It is a masterful use of a small, metal pipe. At the command of Glass, the humble flute and its younger brother the piccolo punch considerably above their weight.
Who could write such a work? Probably only Philip Glass.
The movie's pretty good, too.
Excellent.......2006-08-09
Intriguing historical account of MacNamara- what he was thinking, what he did not say during two administrations involved in the Viet Name war. Use of film footage and Philip Glass' eerie and ominous soundtrack further developed the power of this film.
The film was great, but the score made it outstanding. .......2004-08-05
Ever thought about what it would be like to watch a film with no muscial score? I have and I did for this documentary. Believe me when I write this, there's no way this film would have been as good without Glass' melodic brutality looming in the background.
Glass does something wonderful with this score; he gives war, uncertainty, doubt and fear a musical element, an audible personality that captures each bomb, burnt building and ominous threat in complete perfection, leaving your ears and your mind in a state of disbelief and amazement, thinking to yourself, "Wow, that music fits this segment like a glove."
The Thin Blue Line score made me an instant Glass fan but this score made me borderline Glass fanatic.
In my opinion, he surpasses Carter Burwell in the category of most unflinching film composer.......by a long shot.
A Great Soundtrack for a Great Film.......2004-05-24
Errol Morris is the best documentary film maker ever and The Fog of War is his crowning achievement. The film explores the complexity of war and how it evolves. There is no political bias or agenda here...just plain truth and facts. Great work. Equal to the task is Phillip Glass's soundtrack. The music is haunting and eerie.
ANOTHER GREAT GLASS SCORE!.......2004-03-31
I'll keep this review short, just like the length of the pieces on the CD. This is yet another great score by Glass, and superbly recorded as well. Glass uses his classic strings and percussion to great effect and oftentimes great surprise as well.
This score has more variety than Glass's score for another Morris film, "The Thin Blue Line". By the way, will "The Thin Blue Line" ever get released on DVD?
The pieces are all short ones, which makes it an easier listen for Glass newbies I would imagine, but I would have preferred a few longer pieces- all the short pieces make it sound like "Glass fragments"- on some pieces once Glass gets going he has to come to a stop.
Still, I wholeheartedly recommend this wonderful CD!

William Coulter is an acoustic guitar player who has explored Celtic music for years, as on the exquisite Celtic Requiem CD with singer Mary McLaughlin. Coulter brings a chamber music sound to Celtic music on his latest foray. Taking traditional songs from Ireland, Scotland, and England, Coulter weaves them into original arrangements that include his frequent collaborators from the Santa Cruz and San Francisco area. Among them are cellist Barry Phillips and his wife, wind player Shelley Phillips; pianist Paul Machlis from Skyedance; and Northumbrian piper and concertina player Alastair Anderson.
Together these musicians weave a delicate embrace around familiar tunes like "Women of Ireland" and the devastatingly forlorn "Stor mo Chroi," as well as some lesser known but achingly beautiful songs such as "The Crooked Road to Lisdoonvarna," on which he adds the Turkish kaval to this Irish tune. The road may be crooked, but William Coulter makes it worth the trip. --John Diliberto
Album Description
Following up on the success of his previous recordings, Celtic Crossing and Celtic Sessions, William Coulter once again draws from the rich repertoire of airs and dances from Scotland and Ireland for this latest recording. Along with traditional works, Coulter has also selected a number of contemporary compositions for this recording, including a wonderful duet with concertina master Alistair Anderson on Anderson's "Dog Leap Stairs."
Coulter is joined on two tracks by virtuoso classical guitarist Benjamin Verdery. Together they perform the Sean Ó Riada classic, "Women of Ireland" and the beautiful Turlogh Ó Carolan air, "Elanor Plunkett." The result is a lyrical, emotional and enchanting listening experience.
Customer Reviews:
Coulter does it again.......2001-04-18
I have this little image in my head of how I would like to wind down after a tough day at work. The image goes like this-- I come home and plop down in a great big overstuffed sofa with a cup of hot tea, a good magazine, and I play a CD of soothing, wonderful music. Rarely (oh, heck-- never) do I actually get to live out this little dream. Life is just too hectic. However, if I were to snatch enough time to indulge myself, this CD would be the one I'd put on. It is simply beautiful Irish music played on guitar (with many assorted accompanying instruments). Coulter is a wonderful artist with a real feel for the soul of Irish music. So go home, find a comfy chair, sip your tea, and put on "The Crooked Road." You won't be disappointed.

Album Description
In the late 80's, NJ metal thrashers Hades released their first two full-length albums, "Resisting Success" and "If At First You Don't Succeed". Long out of print, they're now available as a double CD package. Each disc contains a bonus track to make this re-release special to fans. "Resisting Success" contains the track "Target Fixation", which appeared on guitarist Dan Lorenzo's first self-produced solo CD, and "If At First You Don't Succeed" contains "Think Tank", written and recorded specifically for this re-release.

Members of the Resistance, United!!!!!!!!!.......2006-02-14
Hades were one of that 80s bands that offered an intersting proposal, captivating concept in lyrics, in visual terms, musically they had a combination of speed, power metal and trash elements but......maybe this is a personnal opinion i found some sort of elegance, frontman Alan Techhio had some proper personality that only charming vocalists own and his vocal skills were quite amazing, Dan Lorenzo on guitar were a musician very open to experimentation on different sounds such as classic guitar, bluesy sounds, dense feedback, check out "outro" and "Tears Of Orpheus", youll see what i mean, "Opinionate" is the perfect intro for "If at first you dont suceed" very simmilar to Metallicas most classic album intros, "rebel without a brain" and "diplomatic inmunity" reveals the political thougth this band adopted as a part of the concept, actually Hades had that same political and social context that Metallica started to include in ...And Justice For All and that seemed to be the tendence many other bands followed but not for long, it ended as a temporary fashion. "I too Eye" is another great, great track very explosive a little more frivolous than the rest of the songs but the perfect rest for the so judgemental elements contained on the other songs, another remarkable thing here is that despite they were from New Jersey they looked like an european band , maybe its only me but they seemed european for my taste, Hades were an amazing band, another project were born from them called "Non Fiction" were Tecchio were on vocals too, i have never heard them but im not that interested, Hades were not able to survive to this days, their concept didnt quite fit in the 90s and certainly neither in the current decade and therefore they were disbanded maybe for the best, afterall many other bands that doesnt fit anymore in the present are still trying and causing shame because they dont know when its time to retire, Hades keep a good memory for me

About Bloody Time..........2006-02-09
Where has this release been since cd's came out? Back when they did, I never bought cd's cuz they were too expensive. When I finally did, all I had was the lp of Resisting Success and the tape of If at First...and man did I kick myself in the ass when I found they were out of print. Little did I know that eight years later Hades would indepedently re-release them in '98 and I had no idea till it was too late. So, when I was at the store and accidentally came across this I almost made a mess. These two are by far the best releases they have ever put out. The craftsmenship, emotion and thought provoking music with witty lyrics and a phenominal vocalist, my favorite of all time by the way, make these two my fave. You can hear the progression between the albums and the direction they were going to go in but came to a sudden halt. They had broken up and the most stylish and creative drummer, T. Coombs, had broken his foot or something and couldn't play the way he used to and they came out with kind of a sleeper "Exist to Resist." Sounds more like their second effort band Non-Fiction but still decent, just not the powerful "Hades" of old. These two are essential for any Hades or classic 80's metal fan because they are in one package for the price of one, plus they are so damn hard to find! Rarely do I find ANY Hades cd's in a used bin so pick this up and don't spend years regretting you didn't, like me :( This also includes two unreleased tracks, including one they just went into the studio and did exclusively for this release that will go great with your collection of Hades tunes. New to Hades? Pick this up or something new like the "DamNation" album which will just kick your damn teeth in. Cheers.

A LOST 80'S CLASSIC RE-RELEASED.......2005-05-13
Chances are you might not of heard hades first 2 releases .Unless your a dye hard metal fan theres a chance you may not of heard of them but boy do yourself a favor and buy this if you like bands such as judas priest ,iron maiden metallica etc. Basically to try to sum hades sound take 1 part iron maiden 1 part metallica circa master of puppets ,and maybe early rush combine and you have hades. Resisting success starts of with the leaders and finishes with masque of the red death.Tough to pick a fave. but i would say either widows mite(chapter11) or MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH. wouldnt say they sound exactlly like Dream theatre but id say thats the closest comparison i can come to hades sound on these c.d's. It's a shame these guys didnt make it huge but do yourself a favor and by this disc .Also included is there second release if at first you dont succeed which is also top notch check out aftermath of betrayal(the tragedy of hamlet) for some great lyrics and music top notch .With out a doubt probablly one of my top 5 metal cd's of all time

Placebo..........2006-08-17
I think this may have been released in haste in some ways. After being dropped from Geffen one begins to wonder one 's worth as well as a groups longevity. Perhaps Ken's title to his solo demo effort in 1997 summed it up best "This Sounds Like Good bye".
"You're The Beautiful One", "Placebo" and "Every Bitter Drop" show promise, but the rest of the songs fall short of what they achieved in their previous three cd releases on Geffen.
Not Their Best.......2006-03-06
I'm one of those that feel The Posies are a painfully underrated band. Unfortunately Success doesn't have nearly the kind of brilliant song writing that was evident on their earlier releases like Frosting On The Beater and Dear 23. The melodies, harmonies and moving lyrics of those two recordings make for some memorable listening. Success has only faint glimpses of that sound which makes it only mildly enjoyable. Obviously it's impossible to always achieve that perfect blend that makes a great song. The Posies were capable of doing it with amazing regularity. I think this time they missed the mark.
The Posies at their most interesting........2003-06-06
Musically, this album posseses somewhat less brilliance than my favorite Posies record (Frosting), or my second favorite (Amazing Disgrace). Nonetheless, it is more sonically interesting than either, featuring a highly unusual production style, and communicating a sense of the bittersweet more strongly than any other record I have ever heard. Some of you will probably have no idea what I'm talking about, but there is an indefinable emotion of beautiful sadness that some music evokes in me, which to me is the highest attainable goal for anyone who makes music. The Posies captured this with "Song #1," "The Certainty," and others on Disgrace, but it is strongest on this album; notably on "Fall Apart With Me," "Somehow Everything," and "Fall Song." Every song is excellent, however; personally I don't care much for "Placebo" or "Start a Life" (which is a very odd expirement for the Posies), but these are both high quality songs nonetheless, with many good points. And of course any review of Failure would be incomplete without a mention of "You're the Beautiful One," an astounding pop gem that causes your throat to tighten and your eyes to tear up by the final chorus. The ending line "What's so beautiful about you is... you didn't have to explain it to me" alone easily catapaults this song onto the higher tiers of my "top ten songs of all time" list. Highly recommended for Posies fans or anyone who wasn't laughing when I tried to describe this "ethereal bittersweetness."
A fine sayonara.......2003-05-11
Back on Pop Llama, they label where they debuted in the late '80s, the Bellingham, WA popsters' formal full-length swan song --they have occasionally reformed and pseudo posthumously released an EP, a box set and some other odds and ends-- includes a few of their finest tunes. Among them: "Somehow Everything", "You're the Beautiful One", "Friendship of the Future", and "Every Bitter Drop".
