Zero 7's ability to conjure beautiful lullabies with all the romance of 1960s French pop (as found on their debut LP, Simple Things) would have made them the toast of soundtrack composers and chill-out connoisseurs the world over. Unfortunately, two Frenchmen beat Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker to the title of "masters of comedown cool," leaving the London duo to be forever called "the British Air." And this is fair; the similarities between Zero 7's lush cinematic soundscapes and those of Air's Moon Safari and the Virgin Suicides score are so strong as to sound almost intentional. Nonetheless, their debut is a truly gorgeous album. It has all the tried and tested atmospheric tricks--bleeps and whooshes layered over plodding Fender Rhodes chords, swathes of strings and tender trumpet parps--but it's Binns and Hardaker's languid grooves and the soft melancholy of their melodies that make dream-state instrumentals "Give It Away" and "Polaris" utterly enchanting. The real power of Simple Things, however, is in its songs. As beautiful as the ambient strains are, when laid beneath the seductive vocals of Australian diva Sia on the ethereal "Destiny" or the heart-breaking "Distractions," their potency becomes apparent. --Dan Gennoe

This is a dynamite CD! Over 72 minutes long with clean tasty production & beautiful singing & melodies. It's universally appealing:I've played this for many people of different backgrounds from Brazilian to American and they all like it. This music takes you to another place. Get this one it's a keeper!

Chill - Out Virtuosos at Work.......2007-08-01

I'm very skeptical of ambient-type releases. However, zero7's "simple things" is a very listenable album. English artists have always been generally comfortable in an electronic environment, and zero7 is no exception. This album will range from excercises in electronic minimalism to tracks weaving funky bass lines laced with sultry vocal tracks and sprinkled with notes of rising string instruments.

The problem with most ambient music is that it is far too passive; produced with the full intention of staying in the background without being intrusive. "simple things" does not fall into that category. There is a soul, a backbone if you will, to the production. This album is just sexy and is a perfect soundtrack to any amorous couple's bedroom.

I am a big downtempo fan, and finally got around to checking out this album, based on its popularity and reviews. The music is ok, but nothing really stood out for me. The track I liked the most was track 11. Check out Bar Lounge Classics - volumes 1, 2 and 3. Great stuff there.

Mere Words Cannot Explain This Music.......2007-07-24

I've listened to a lot of music in my day, but I can safely say I had not lived musically until I heard this CD. Blowing me away would not be strong enough to describe Simple Thing's effect on me. Don't be deceived by reviews that paint this music as existing only relative to others (Air), or depicting it only as a brand of tricky electronic virtuosity. Rather, this is incredibly ethereal music that demands a careful and intent listening. Listen on the freeway when you can focus on the sounds and not be distracted by the demands of stop and go driving. Go into a meditative state and then listen. Or, use some of a well-known herb and prepare to be sent into the stratosphere. The depths of the musicianship and craftmanship behind this performance are beyond my comprehension. I've listened to thousands of CD's in my day, in all genres, but this one has become my favorite after only several listenings. Nothing at all short of incredible.

Suave, Refined -- So Cool. I really enjoy this album.
My favorites in this album are "Destiny", "Distractions" (sublime) and "In the Waiting Line".

With Moving Pictures, Rush's complex songwriting and musical virtuosity reached new heights. It's that rarest of creatures, a highly listenable progressive-rock album; even the all-instrumental "YYZ" is of interest to listeners besides musicians. The highlight of the album is "Limelight"; like many progressive-rock bands, Rush writes songs about the experience of being on-stage. The result is impressive, with almost orchestral arrangements that never overwhelm the actual music. "Tom Sawyer," another classic, is on this album, as well as the science-fiction-meets-road-movie "Red Barchetta," the epic "The Camera Eye," the cautionary "Witch Hunt," and "Vital Signs," which takes advantage of the budding digital sound technology available at the time the album was recorded. Transitional Album for a Great Band.......2007-07-29

Many have said that this is the "definitive Rush album." Definitive? I don't think one album can encapsulate this band, perhaps its better said that this is Rush's most popular album because more people came out of the wood work to purchase this album over the years, and at the time of its release in 1981, the "concert to see" that year (and in 1982) was Rush's due to this album.

To me every Rush album is their "definitive album" since every album they ever release is so different than the one before. However, Moving Pictures is one of my favorite Rush album, and I've been a huge Rush fan since 1978 after a friend of mine made me listen to Rush's "2112." I was hooked on Rush's sound, and started buying up their records (to that date anyway). All this is said because many "would be Rush fans" usually have Moving Pictures and/or Signals (maybe Grace Under Pressure) in their collections and they think they are "Rush fans," but these are their most popular albums containing some of their biggest "radio hits."

If you are not a big Rush fan but would like to get your feet wet on the extremely unique "Rush sound" then this is not the album for you - try 2112 or Caress 0f Steel, but if you are looking for Rush's big radio hits then this is the album for you. Don't misunderstand me here, Moving Pictures is a great album, like I said earlier it is my favorite Rush album (because it got me through the roughest summer of my entire life back in 1983).

Every song on this album is different. In fact, Rush's sound got much "larger", more produced if you will, on this album. So how does one describe this album - in a word - "Texture." The songs are catchy riffs, quick playing, contain intricate detail, and are very moving or grabbing. The songs stay in your head all day long 'cause the melodies are so great. Moreover, this is also a "guitar album" and Alex talent shines forth on this album. He is, of course, one of the most under rated guitar players in rock history. Geddy's vocals shift from a more shrill to a more studio rounded or full sound, and Neal's drum work, well perfection comes to mind. With all this said, you would not be wasting your money on this one. This is a musician's album from start to finish and well worth the price paid.

Sample the songs for yourself and you too can see why this band has been around for over 30 years.

IN TERMS OF RUSH ALBUMS THIS IS THEM AT THEIR PRIME. A NON STOP ROCKER!!
I FIND MYSELF WISHING THEY HAD PUT 10 SONGS ON HERE INSTEAD OF 7. BECAUSE IT'S OVER AND YOU STILL WANT MORE. EVERY CUT GIVES 100% OF THE RUSH EXPERIANCE. THEIR NEXT BEST ALBUM IS "2112". BUT THIS ONE IS HEAD OF THE CLASS.

What a rush.......2007-07-24

I vacillated on this one, between 4 and 5 stars. I went with 4 because the album just kind of falters some in the second half. The first half is spectacular: Tom Sawyer, Limelight and Red Barchetta are all awesome. The Carmera Eye is good but too long. The final tracks on teh CD are solid, but not up to the mark of the others. Overall, the CD has a lot of punch for an album with compartively few tracks [tho it does log in at 40 minutes as a whole]. Strong 4 stars, almost got to 5.

The Greatest Rush Ever Made!!!!.......2007-06-13

Moving Pictures is both one of my favorite albums of all time and one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Perfect in every aspect. This is Rush unleashed! After the near perfection of previous efforts like Hemispheres and Farewell To Kings and Permanent Waves, Rush came together and created their masterpiece. I could listen to it a million times and still never get tired of the prog-rock trio's best effort.

Tom Sawyer - Hands down one of the coolest songs ever! Here the boys from Toronto show that not only are they excellent musicians, but they can write a song with hooks from hell. Memorable and classic. I love this tune.

Red Barchetta - My Uncle has a country place that no one knows about... Another classic Rush tune. Written in the 1984-esque future-gone-wrong perspective with an idea garnered from a cool sci-fi story. This about a boy and his car and the fact that driving has become illegal. Great stuff.

YYZ - One of the most killer instrumental tunes ever recorded. This song rox! Geddy, Alex & Neil in complete show-off jam mode. Solid.

Limelight - Another of my personal favorites. A song about the other side of fame & fortune. From the opening riff, this song rocks! All the world's indeed a stage and we are merely players! Excellent!

The Camera Eye - If Moving Pictures is said to have a soft spot, Camera Eye would be it, although I happen to love this song. Clocking just over eleven minutes, this is a sprawling, moody tune along the lines of Xanadu or Natural Science. A sleeper, but still strong.

Witch Hunt - I have so many favorites on this album, and Witch Hunt is another. Written about prejudice and mob mentality, Witch Hunt is part three of the 'Fear Trilogy' (The Enemy Within & The Weapon being the other two parts) that they performed live for a long time. Killer tune. Those who know what's best for us should rise and save us from ourselves....

Vital Signs - Great ending song to a magnificent album. Short and sweet and too the point. Neil's lyrics flow on their own. Everybody's got to deviate from the norm.

Overall, Rush went into the studio and came up big with Moving Pictures. This is the culmination of their earlier years solidified into something both powerful and perfect. There will never be another Rush album like Moving Pictures. This is the peak. Great songs will follow but there will never be that cohession that this album brings. Great album to start with if you are just getting acquainted with Rush. An old favorite for those of us who have been following them forever.

While Rush has so many great albums this one is in my top three.
A classic cd from the 80's with such melodic songs as Red Barchetta and
Witch Hunt. Plus the two mega hits we all love. If you are wanting to forget your worries, put this in your cd player and sit back.

Desert Island Disc!.......2007-06-20

This sacd is positively stunning. I am young. I was raised on gizmos, gadgets and hi-tech this and that...and for the life of me I can't understand how these engineers back in the 50's and 60's produced such astoundingly detailed recordings. With two or three mics for the hall and some tube equipment and wham...there you have it...a recording of impressively powerful pieces of music with enough separation and detail within the mix to keep the listener busy for hours and hours on end. That and the emotional wallop packed by this recording is second to none. Even if you have copies aplenty of Pictures, or Night on..., such as I do myself, please do not hesitate to pick up this recording as it is worth every dime. If you are looking for an interesting counterpoint to Reiner's reading of Pictures or Night pick of Jose Serebrier's recording on Naxos.

How can something older than me sound so good? The recording is top notch. Dont be fooled into thinking it is "just stereo", the ambience of symphony hall comes thru as though it were recorded in surround. Exquisite detail and perfect tempo. Timpani has realistic impact. And all the other music with Pictures makes this a real bargain!

They sound good, without the 'edge' often associated with CDs. CDs are a Fourier Transform of the analog source - that is to say a subset of it.

Great value. Great performances. On my krell sacd player, I found small differences between the SACD layer and the regular. The recordings are outstanding. Consider the price and that this is a 2 lp set, this is a deal.

You'd never have guessed that this country hunk would turn out to have a brain and a heart hiding under his Western gear, but Brad Paisley's Who Needs Pictures is among the more encouraging albums to come out of Nashville in some time. Rather than running from country's traditions, Paisley embraces them, going so far as to include the gospel standard "In the Garden" alongside original songs that tackle more contemporary subjects such as single motherhood ("He Didn't Have to Be") or church services that interfere with a Sunday out on the lake ("Long Sermon"). Just as promising, the guitars (Paisley's own picks) and fiddles here have been recorded in all their biting, twangy glory. There are problems--a few arrangements are predictably busy and the gimmicky fake-out ending of "Me Neither" is clever precisely once--but overall, Paisley's debut seems like a sign of something good about to develop. --David Cantwell

Typical Paisley...just good country. Why wasn't SLEEPING ON THE FOLDOUT a big hit!! Fun.

Excellent start for one of the best young artists in country music.......2005-07-04

Brad Paisley, to me, is easily one of the most impressive artists to break out in the past decade. This, his first effort, was a very good one. Paisley's most impressive quality is his versatility; he can sing excellent emotional ballads, can quickly shift gears to a fun and humorous song, and in nearly every song displays pretty darn impressive guitar chops. He's a little twangy, so the fringe country fan might be bothered by that...but for any true fan of country music, Brad offers something for any mood you might be in.

The highlights of this CD:
My favorite song on this album is probably "He Didn't Have To Be," the true ballad sung in honor of his stepdad. Great lyrics, beautifully sung by Paisley.
"We Danced" is another great ballad that comes in a close second for me. The lyrics aren't quite as deep as "He Didn't Have To Be," but they're still very pleasant to listen to. Honorable mention to "Who Needs Pictures," another strong ballad.

Picking up the pace, "Long Sermon" is an amusing cut with an enjoyable and catchy beat. "Me Neither" is hilarious on the first couple of listens...though I found it to be short on lasting power. Still, while the novelty of the lyrics wears off somewhat quickly, there's some excellent guitar work pinned on the end of that one. "Don't Breathe" is another fun one..."fun" might be an odd description of a song about heartache, but I do think it's Paisley's intention in this one.

"Nervous Breakdown" is a good instrumental track on the CD, and "In The Garden," a traditional gospel song, is a refreshing part of the CD (and is a nice start to Brad's now consistent pattern of including a gospel song on each album).

There's a little bit of filler on this album, but not much I wouldn't say. I quickly thought of 8 tracks I enjoyed on the disc that I enjoy quite a bit, without ever having to look back to the CD...for a debut album, that's a very impressive number in my view. Fans of Brad Paisley would definitely do well to pick this album up if they don't yet have it...while Mud on the Tires is probably his best effort yet, Who Needs Pictures is a solid runner-up.

Strong and durable debut album .......2005-01-18

The picture on the cover of this album lead me to expect the worst -another pretty boy hat act with the usual slick production and disposable ,radio friendly tunes.I am delighted to say my cynicism was misplaced -this arist is an altogether better performer ,and this an altogether better album than I was expecting .
Paisley was a youthful 26 when this album appeared in 1999 but had several years of live performance experience behind him ,and several appearances on the famed Wheeling Jamboree ,not to mention having songs cut by seasoned performers like David Ball and Tracy Byrd .In addition he is a guitarist of exemplary talent --just listen to the crispness and fluidity of his playing on " The Nervous Breakdown " for a demonstration of his wizardry on the instrument ,if you want to hear for yourself .As a vocalist he sounds traditional without being self consciously retro unlike artists such as neo-traditionalists Dale Watson and Wayne Hancock .He is clearly aware of the greats of the music and indeed opened his 2000 London show with a medley of songs by artists such as Haggard and Miller, but has a style which manages to be unique while operating within the parameters of the music's past .
There may be better hardcore country singers out there but he is not deficient in the vocal department and has what it takes to be a major figure in the genre for years to come .
Pitch ; inflection and phrasing are all solid and there is the added bonus of his being an accomplished writer .The only well known co-writer featured is Tim Nichols and they collaborated to produce the witty and tongue in cheek opening track " Long Sermon " -deep it aint but it is charming and pertinent with a lively infectious bounce to it .He can do more serious stuff too as witness the touching hymn to a stepfather " He Didn't Have To Be That Way " -an attractive song with a positive message about family .Its the kind of song anti country people feel is hokey but that is their loss .I found it truthful and touching .Listen also the touches of Western swing on " It Never Woulda Worked Out Anyway " and the wry self deprecation of the lyric to " Me Neither " .This is a man who takes the work seriously but not himself .

The best cut for my money is thr title song - one in the tradition of the Alan Jackson classic " Here in the Real World " a thoughtful well wrought refelective ballad about a lost love .
Excellent production from another debutant Frank Rogers and crisp playing from the musicians , mostly drawn from his road band rather than the usual studio musicians and what you get is a striking debut album that has worn well in the time since its release

Recommended to all who carrynthe torch for traditional country with modern day edge

Satisfying version of 'Pictures..'; liked album on the whole.......2007-05-31

I had attended a SF Symphony performance which included "Pictures At An Exhibition" as orchestrated by Ravel. I was pleasantly suprised by how much I liked that piece taken as a whole. I have always thought highly of Bernstein's interpretation, and believed I would hear a nicely played and interpreted version of 'Pictures..' Indeed, the piece is executed as I thought it would. I like Bernstein's interpretation of 'Pictures At An Exhibition', and the album, on the whole, is worth the suggested price.

Powerful music!.......2007-01-27

I loved this CD. It is the same cover and everything as the record we had while I was growing up. In HS we actually marched to this! Wonderful memories and excellent recording.

There are very few musical memories I have before the age of ten but "Pictures At An Exhibition" is one of them.
I was in bed putting off going to school when I saw this awsome ad for The United States Navy.
While showing scenes of eighteenth century battleships, they played this music. Nearly thirty years later, I still cant get it out of my head!

Last movement of Pictures conducted too slow.......2002-05-21

Hello,
I feel that Bernstein conducted the last movement of Pictures too slowly. It has a majesty and grace all it's own but in Bernstein's hands it slows to a jaunted crawl and looses some of the awe effect. Also the percussion is ever so slightly too loud in the end. I don't thing the tubular bells or gong were meant to be heard as much felt. Kind of a let down, but there's another version I'm used to hearing that set me up for this. Not sure what version that is, but I'll let ya know if I find out. The rest of "Pictures" is decent, and "Night" is great.

Outstanding performance.......2001-05-03

Bernstein really captures the spirit of the music, from the light feel of the Unhatched chicks and the Market Place at Limoges, to the pure brawn of Bydlo, to the mysteriousness of the catacombs and the cum mortuis in liqua mortua, finishing it triumphantly with the great gate of Kiev. I've really enjoyed this production, and listen to it frequently.

I bought this CD to use in my classroom as listening examples. I'm not just a super big fan of some of the performances, but they are all good and for the price you can't beat it. That's why I gave it 5 stars. It's worth more than it costs by far.

This is a who's-who of great pieces of music you have heard all of your life, and never knew the names and stories! I listened to it over and over in the car and had my own concert! A friend borrowed it to add music to his Home Movies and it was perfect!

Good Music at a Great Price.......2004-03-06

I bought this CD mostly for "Entry of the Gladiators," which everyone will recognize as classic circus music. The performance on this CD (by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops) is the best available version of Entry of the Gladiators. The rest of the CD offers mostly excerpts of classical music.

I had purchased an abundance of the "Favorites" collection and some were better than others.

This CD is at the top of them all. They may be short, but not that short. Wondrous music.

I can almost guarantee that you will like this music.
Well worth the price!

Good for the novice.......2002-06-08

The recordings on this disc are pretty good. However, the editors selected only the *loud* parts, as indicated by the title. I was pretty disappointed to find that the pieces are, in many cases, edited to reflect the most famous themes, etc, instead of including the whole work. In general, I would recommend this to the classical music novice, or someone who wants to expand their knowledge of classical music in general. Those who already are familiar with these pieces will probably feel gypped.

DG has put together a fascinating compilation of Segovia's art that reminds us what a protean figure he was. Segovia single-handedly put the instrument on the map by making classical guitar concerts popular events, broadening the instrument's repertory through commissions and transcriptions, and convincing even doubters that it could be a vehicle for serious music. He's heard here in brief pieces recorded between 1952 and 1969. Even in those made when he was well into his 70s, his fingers remain nimble and interpretations lively. Listening straight through, one hears many all-time Segovia favorites as Turina's Sevillana and Albeniz's Asturias and Zambra Granadina and renews appreciation for path-breaking composers like Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He wrote extensively for Segovia and his Capriccio diabolico and Tonadilla are pieces of real substance. Disc two is largely made up transcriptions and it's amazing how well so many of them work on the guitar, at least under Segovia's magic fingers. Thus the transformations of Bach's violin music and even a Chopin Prelude sound idiomatic, and the gorgeous melodies of the Canzonetta from Mendelssohn's Op. 12 String Quartet are irresistible here. This 2-CD set produced by Deutche Grammmophon and first released in 2002 is one set of the hundreds that could have been or the dozens that actually have been made and sold successfully all over the world. The exceptional feature of this particular collection is not, of course, the performer. Quite to the contrary, the miraculous consistency of stylings and performance are amongst the most remarkable aspects of the man who was, arguably, the 20th Centry's virtuoso supreme of the classical guitar, Andres Segovia (1893-1987.) Rather, it is the collection itself - the pieces chosen to be produced on this one set - this, to steal a German word, gestalt. While his style did not remain constant throughout his long life and career, by the time he had developed his most masterful skills that included doing his own arrangements - the era represented on this particular set (1951-1960) - his playing had become completely his own - unchallenged and unmatched by even other clearly great guitarists with whom he shared this era.

There are a total of 31 pieces played on these CDs and while a playlist would be an unnecessary use of space here, a list of the composers represented is not. More than the specific pieces Segovia gives us here, the range of composers chosen by the compilers and editors - with each piece rearranged by Segovia himself, tells us a great deal about his interests, talents and musical range. These composers include:

A truly magnificent and broad ranging collection held together by Segovia's unique personal style, approach and sound.

Largely self-taught, Andres Segovia did things with a guitar that others only imagined. He didn't just play Bach, for example - music written for an entirely different type of instrument (keyboards.) He went a step further, and recorder Bach's keyboard lessons written for his students (the Two and Three Part Inventions) and made them sound as if they had been written for the guitar! His artistry is evident to even the casual listener and in this collection, any devote of classical guitar and/or of Segovia as an individual artist, will not be disappointed.
Perfect listening for anytime. Hypnotic and, simply, unsurpassed. A necessary addition to any serious classical guitar collection.

EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT ANDRES SEGOVIA WAS/IS THE WORLD'S GREATEST CLASSICAL GUITAR PLAYER. THIS CD IS A COMPILATION OF HIS RECORDINGS FROM THE THE EARLY 50'S TO THE LATE 60'S. HIS GUITAR MASTERY IS UNQUESTIONED AND HE IS AN INSPIRATION. I WISH I COULD PLAY GUITAR LIKE ANDRES SEGOVIA (BUT I CAN'T AND I NEVER WILL!).

For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde

Waste of money.......2006-01-12

Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

Great Music Compilation.......2005-08-15

This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.

If you like classical music don't buy this CD........2005-03-11

Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing. I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's. If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks.

A must for anyone wanting the staples of classical music.......2005-02-23

In my years of experience teaching Fine Arts to high school students, I know that the majority, if not all, of the music included on this album is commonly used in collge music appreciation courses. This is an excellent sample of truly all the "greatest hits" of classical music. My students enjoy listening to the music and have later told me when take their required music apreciation courses in college that they "already know it all" because of this CD! The recordings are clear, the selections are passionate, and the listener will gain a familiarity with all of the most commonly heard classical music used in tv commercials, movies, etc.
I recommend this album, along with the boxed set, "Age of the Classics" for anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the most famous staples of classical music.

A great compilation.......2005-02-09

This cd somes up some of the greatest pieces of instrumental (and is some cases choral) music ever written. It is a great starter for a beginning classical music lover or a quick and easy all-in-one for those of us who study classical music for a living. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to love or already does love classical music.

"The Sage" is Lake's best.......2007-07-23

I can't disagree more with the reviewer below regarding the insertion of ELP's own pictures into this gallery. Wanna get rid of "Nutrocker" while we're at it? I've never heard a fan upbraid this band for not sticking with Mussorgsky to the exclusion of "The Sage," "The Curse of Baba Yaga," or the "Blues Variation." Greg's vocals here are what's really special (before he started losing his voice and giving out bombastic rocker yells). The lyrics at the end of "Kiev"? You might say they're classic art-rock from the 1970s; in any case they have never gotten in the way for me. In addition, the tastefully chosen words throughout the record heighten the crucial air of mystery for a modern audience. "Death is life" acknowledges the then-unknown immortalization of Victor Hartmann through his paintings: his name is still around today as a result of Mussorgsky's musical tribute (upon seeing a Hartmann exhibition in Russia). And Mussorgsky's name itself is now further known through the work of the band. Back to "The Sage": although it wasn't a part of the original suite...well, I'll be blasphemous and say it might as well have been. The point is it feels as if it belongs, and it seems that would be no easy feat for a young guy to accomplish. The misty mood, the plaintive delivery set up "The Old Castle" beautifully. Meanwhile, "Curse" totally rocks and flows seamlessly as the logical, evil extension of the witch's ride of "Hut." Okay, now I can thank you for allowing me to say this is one great album, already legendary and fabled on its own. Art is death is life and amen. And the remaster sounds warm and alive as well.

A worthy rework, with some flaws........2007-07-22

This album has two main weaknesses:

1: As long as they stick with redoing the original work, it sounds wonderful. While the instruments are obviously limited to guitar, keyboards and drums; they make the songs sound like the original work AND unique enough to make it their own. When they put their own works into the mix, however (blues variation, the sage come to mind) it ceases being "ELP does Missorgsky" and becomes plain ELP.

2: Lake: Shut Up! The Great Gates of Kiev/The End is ruined by your lyrics. Even with plain Piano that work stands magestic, heads and shoulders above the rest (and much of Classical Music). Your lyrics for that piece turn it into sub-newage crap.

The flaws, however, end up small. This work is actually well thought-out and inventive in its own right. Missorgsky's original work lends itself to orchestration, and while this is one of the more eccentric orchestrations, it actually does well even with the flaws.

Just learn to overlook the "Death Is Life" stuff in Great Gates of Kiev.

Remastered "Pictures" Done Right!.......2007-06-27

Prog-rock supertrio ELP didn't just turn long-deceased Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky's music into rock,they turned him into a rock star.Before this came out,most people were only aware of the classical composer's music in the form of his "Night On Bald Mountain" via Disney's "Fantasia".Most people had never heard of the "Pictures At An Exhibition" suite until ELP's version and 'yes,found their way into a deeper interest in and appreciation for classical forms through this experience.What matters now is how well ELP's interpretation holds up 35 years later.This Shout! reissue,like Emerson, Lake & Palmer,Tarkus and Trilogy,is a major improvment sound quality-wise over the weak Atlantic,Victory and Rhino versions.At a reasonable price,no ELP or prog-rock fan should hesitate to upgrade with this remastered jewel.
