About the Artist
Dr. Mike Bogle

A versatile musician, Mike Bogle was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1992 for his big band arrangement of Chick Corea's composition "Got A Match?" An accomplished trombonist, pianist, vocalist, composer, and arranger, Dr. Bogle currently calls Arlington, Texas his home, where he is Associate Director of Jazz Studies and Director of Music Media and Technology at the University of Texas at Arlington, directing Jazz Band II, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combos, and teaching Jazz Improvisation, Arranging, Composition, Music Media, Recording Techniques, and Computers in Music.

Dr. Bogle's performance credits include: Doc Severinsen, James Moody, Slide Hampton, Jaco Pastorious, Ira Sullivan, Pete Christlieb, Duffy Jackson, Bobby Caldwell, Burt Bacharach, Diana Ross, and Tom Jones.

Dr. Bogle is a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers (ASCAP), International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE), Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), International Trombone Association (ITA), and American Federation of Musicians (AFM). Mike's charts are published by Harold Gore Publishing Co., Denton, TX, and University of Northern Colorado Jazz Press, Greeley, CO.

Although it's based on the 1967 movie of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie is almost thoroughly new. Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune--and recycling even older material (look for Victor Herbert's "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and the inventively arranged "Nuttycracker Suite"). Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, and Tesori does a great job cranking out swinging melodies. Sutton Foster is appropriately brassy as Millie, but she can also tone it down, as in the beginning of "Gimme Gimme" (of course, she then proceeds to project up to the last rafters as the song builds to its climax). Harriet Harris, as nasty Mrs. Meers, steals the show with "They Don't Know." Close your eyes, listen to her, and you'll be back in Broadway's golden age. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Excellent Musical, But Product Quality - Eh.......2007-07-15

I absolutely love the musical so I'm thrilled with the cd.

My problem was not with the quality of the cd, but with the plastic case. The cd cases always come cracked. Although it doesn't affect the quality of the cd itself, it's rather disheartening that Amazon charges customers for its poor shipping.

I was very fortunate enough to see this on Broadway. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen! The music has just enough jazz and contemporary vive that any musical lover would enjoy! It's also got tapping in it! Sutton is simply awesome in this role and all of the cast can really belt out their songs. Harriet Harris is phenominal in her role as Mrs. Meers. I highly recommend this to all broadway lovers! It's one to add to your collection!

The music takes a little bit to grow on you, but boy, does it! It's wonderful, charming, romantic, funny--just like the play itself. I loved almost every song and I was really impressed with "Long As I'm Here With You"-- I thought it was an old song written back in the twenties, because it so sounded like one. The cast is absolutely energetic and endearing, and Sutton Foster just *rocks*. Definitely worth the money.

If you like musicals, you will NOT REGRET purchasing this musical soundtrack. JUST DO IT. It's so great, you will be listening to it forever. I also saw the show at the Kennedy Center in D.C. and it's one of the best I've ever seen. (And I've seen A LOT.)

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Still better than today's "music".......2007-06-18

TOSOL is not my favorite of the Moodies and it certainly is not their best work by far. Still, it's the Moody Blues, and even at their worst, they are better than 99% of the "stuff" being peddled today and labeled music.

I enjoyed Justin Hayward's Your Wildest Dreams, I just Don't Care, and The other Side of Life. Hayward and Lodge collaborated on Running out of Love and I love the song on all levels, especially their sweet harmony.
John Lodge's It May Be a Fire isn't my fave of his but it was a pleasant surprise as was Rock n Roll Over You.

This CD is for die-hard MB's completists or those who love 80's sounding music. The "core 7 MB only" folks probably hate this one. I love The Moodies and am willing to stick by them thru thick and thin. This CD isn't vintage Moody Blues, but hey it WAS the 1980's.

The beginning of the drum machine with acoustic guitar era.......2007-01-08

And now for all you Miami Vice fans The Moody Blues. I remember when this album came out as I still had high hopes for the band. Unfortunately, this would also mark the end for my hopes for this band. One of the Moodies strengths for me anyway was the band's ability to make what felt like organic music but with this album all that changed. The band's last album The Present hadn't sold as well as the band had hoped and also the band's label had now been taken over by Polygram. The idea was to come up with an album that would bring in new fans while still keeping the old. Enter new producer Tony Visconti who was most known for working with David Bowie. This album was also the first to feature no playing OR songwriting by Ray Thomas although he's shown in all the group photos and listed as a band member. This album did suceed in creating a new generation of fans thanks to the videos Your Wildest Dreams and The Other Side Of Life getting heavy airplay on MTV. In fact, both videos won MTV video awards. Rock And Roll Over You was featured in the Kirate Kid 2 movie. This was also the first tour the band did with many backup singers and additional musicians. As for the album itself sounds very processed and very 1986 if you know what I mean. There are a few good songs on here to be sure: Your Wildest Dreams, Running Out Of Love, Slings And Arrows, and It May Be A Fire. However, most of the rest is more than forgettible and some is even hard to listen to.

Moody Blues sell their soul.......2006-07-30

This album is pretty bad (Moody Blues wise), and hasn't aged very well. It's got a few good songs, "Wildest Dreams," "Running Out Of Love" & "The Other Side Of Life," but most of it is so far off track to what makes the Moody Blues magical. It sounds like they're using a drum machine instead of Edge, and there's no Ray Thomas to be found. It reminds me of what happened to another band called Heart; selling your musical soul to keep up with the times.

I remember buying this album along with Deep Purple's "House Of Blue Light" in early '87. I didn't really like either very much. Can you imagine, two of your favorite bands crumbling to the ugly sounds of the mid '80's. To this day, I still don't like this album, but Deep Purple's did grow on me. I guess Purple didn't sound so dated in hindsight, because of the fact they were using real drums and all five of their members were involved. But not the Moodies.

Anyway, the next Moody Blues album, 1988's "Sur La Mer," was a lot better, if you like that "80's sound." But, if you are looking for a really good follow up to 1981's "Long Distance Voyager," you need to find 1983's "The Present."

The Moodies go technopop...yikes!!!.......2006-03-28

For devoted Moody freaks, this album takes a little getting used to. When I first picked it up and listened to it in 1986, the first cut "Your Wildest Dreams" sounded like a sure winner for being a huge pop hit WHICH IT WAS, going all the way to #1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart, and peaking at #9 on the Billboard Pop chart. From there, the album takes a very unusual turn, and when I heard "Talkin' Talkin'", I about jumped out of my skin as I said to myself "Oh my God, the Moodies have gone technopop!!!" Then the next track "Rock And Roll Over You" (which was also included in the soundtrack of Karate Kid Part Two) left me feeling even more astonished and flabbergasted. The music then returns to "normal", with the ballad "I Just Don't Care", and "Running Out of Love", a song about being in a quandry of what to do with a fractured love relationship. The title cut is weird and spooky in its content, and the accompanying video (if you have ever seen it) is ten times as freaky. "Slings and Arrows" is a catchy track, with all the instruments falling into place one by one at the beginning of the song, while the remaining two tracks on the album, "The Spirit" and "It May Be A Fire" rank as average. Avid Moodies fans will find the best cuts here worth purchasing this album, but be prepared for a very different Moodies sound on a few of the tracks. Worthy of 3 1/2 stars.

Although I love the Moody Blues, this is not one of my favorite albums by them. It's got some great songs, but also a few that I just don't like that well. Still worth having for a true fan, however.

This is the first classical cd I have ever bought. The two-disc album was a great price. I really love the performance of Lynn Harrell. I like the collection of Adagios because they are perfect to fall asleep to or study to.

Great Sampling Collection.......2007-07-29

Over the past thirty years, my father and I have been collecting film music on various formats--vinyl, tape, reel-to-reel, CD, recording it from the movie, even. This collection is a great starter for someone who wants to start owning movie music. Lots of big hitters, including Hermann, Barry, Conti, Mancini, and Goldsmith as well as some contemporary scores that are great, too. This is the type of collection I would make for a friend who asks "what scores should I start with?"

Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

I love classical music but I dont own very much of it, so I thought I would start my collection with Masters of the Bow. What a beautiful selection it was. I just love the sound of a Violin, Joshua Bell is my favorite,I would love to hear more from him. This collection really helps you get to know the masters. Lovely Lovely!

I love the violin and this collection is one of my favorites. A great choice for someone like me who doesn't know enough about music and never knows what to buy. It has introduced me to some artists and pieces that I knew nothing about and will help me know what to look for in violin music in the future. This is my favorite but I would also recommend The Cello and Voice CDs in the "Masters of" series. I can't wait for more in this series.

It's a fact: Some CDs simply never get old. Count Point of Grace's LIFE, LOVE & OTHER MYSTERIES among these classics.

After nearly 10 years, Point of Grace's third album still remains their best and most timeless creation. Here, the girls have created a diverse sound that explores pop, rock, gospel, soul, and tender ballads.

The album's title track opens with a simple, beautifully-harmonized reminder of God's omnipotence. The soulful, gospel-tinged "Keep the Candle Burning" reminds listeners to remain faithful during times of hardship. Catchy "That's the Way It's Meant to Be" affirms the awesomeness of God's plan.

Point of Grace has been a staple in Christian music since their debut in 1993 and with faith hope and the love of God they continue to be one of the most powerful Christian bands of all time and still continues to be a favorite among young and old alike. On their third cd life love and other mysteries Point of Grace shows their affection and love of God through their souls out to their fans. The cd's rock fused title track {which recieved limited airplay on christian stations} tells us that not only if you believe in yourself and no other person God will be your friend and help you in times of need. Then comes the powerful Keep the candle burning which is a beautiful ballad about even though some goals are hard to achieve you have to believe with a steady heart. Be sure to listen for the aweome guitar solo. The album's third single You are the answer {The first song i liked from life love and other mysteries} is a Clay Aikenish type song with inspirational lyics and a message that tells us that if we can believe in anything God will be the answer to all our questions {You are the answer is the song where the title of my review is from}. In addition to more great songs not to mention a GREAT cover of Earth wind and fire's sing a song there is also a advertisement for Mercy Ministries a charity that provides homes and money for poor children and family in a space of their own for free and also a order form to order Point Of Grace merchandise. The follow up cd Steady On is very good but it doesn't compare to life love and other mysteries.(...)

Awesome CD!.......2004-01-14

A former girlfriend gave me this CD (without it's case or artwork) 2 years ago. I put it in my CD player & it was great! The group really swings on every song. In other words there's not a bad song on the whole CD. In fact I liked it so much I bought every CD the group has made since including this one as I wanted the CD artwork.

Yep, this CD is a definite winner. I always play it all the way through. You want a group that praises the Lord? Then get this one. You won't go wrong.

Life, Love and Other Mysteries.......2003-09-30

I love this album. They have beautiful voices. My favorite songs are "That's the way it's meant to be", "Any road, any cost" and "Life, love, and other mysteries." They really have a genius for creating songs that touch you where you are! Oh, and the song "God forbid" was especially beautiful. There were only one or two songs I was disappointed with, "Gone are the dark days" and "Sing a song".
In short, I recommend this album to anyone who likes beautiful harmonies and sometimes fun, sometimes very emotional songs.

I have been in love with Zamfir's music since 1982 or so, when I listened in a radio station his fabulous renderng of the --''Theme From Limelight''. I called the radio station, gor the artist's name and album title and went out to a record store and bought it.

I listened to this album's samples and ALL of the songs are just beautifil. I highly recommende it to alll those who really love soft and romantic music, and I am buyinbg this album too!...

Queen of Songs.......2007-07-29

I received this CD 'San Fracisco and other Jeanette MacDonald Favorites' a few days ago and have listened to it carefully several times. She is about a generation before my time; so far I have seen only two pictures of her: 'San Francisco' and 'The Merry Widow'. In San Francisco, I discovered she can also sing opera successfully to some degree As for The Merry Widow, I much prefer the later version performed by Lana Turner and Fernando Lamas although Turner didn't sing by herself in the film and Lamas is a lot more convincing than Maurice Chevalier as a Casanova type beau; to be truthful, I can't stand grandpa Chevalier. I beleive I also saw another of her movie which she played quite late in her career because she played mother to Jane Powell, this one I saw in the theater in my teenage days, for your information, I saw almost every MGM musicals in those heyday years. Unfortunately though, I don't quite remember the story of it, but I do remember vaguely that MacDonald sang Un bel di from Puccini's Madama Butterfly and when she sang she formed her mouth so beautifully that one could forget it if she didn't sing well.

One thing I can assert with confidence is that MacDonald is a very beautiful lady oozes with glamour, and is very classy. Classiness was a very prominent and widespread quality of female stars in that era, Lana Turner who played the wealthy merry widow was just one case. If I were to make a list it would occupy a full page, nowadays, it would be impossible to name just three or four female stars with class, no offense, please. Now let me come back to the main subject that is MacDonald's art of singing. Well, she certainly has good vocal technigue, her high note is firm to the very top and she is able to sustain it for a considerable duration as she has displayed quite often in this disc. The voice itself is delicate and sweet, just like her person. However, she tends to sing with monotone which make her singing sounds bland, like no. 4, Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life, may be if she move a notch down the scale it would sound more pleasant. Songs My Mother Taught Me is just about the only song she successfully sings with feelings. Here, I would like to point out that a few songs are worth repeated listenings: Ciribiribin, The Donkey Serenade, Italian Street Song, and of course, Songs My Mother Taught Me.
Songs no. 16 to 22, I'm sorry to say that they are not up to my standard, I have been listening to opera singing for over thirty years you know. I must mention here that MacDonald's French seems very good, I don't know French though, nevertheless, I can tell just by listening

Queen of Songs is a title crowned her by the Chinese people in that time, she was indeed highly esteemed.

Jeanette MacDonald Favorites.......2007-05-13

This CD is an incredible testimony and celebration of an American Master Singer.
A must have for all. An introduction to quality and good taste for a new generation of music lovers.

A MUST for any Jeanette fan!.......2006-04-25

This CD is a gem! The songs included on it are beautiful and show off MacDonald's incredible voice. The best part of this CD, however, is the sound quality. Unlike many of her other recordings, and those featuring her with frequent costar Nelson Eddy, the sound on this CD is pristine, and you can barely tell the recordings are 50+ years old!

Jeanette MacDonald Was Unique.......2001-03-12

It really doesn't matter whether or not she could sing; Jeanette MacDonald was unique. On these old recordings, her voice sounds thin and watery, and contemporary tastes do not respond so readily to the sentimentality and predictability of her movies. But she was a gracious lady and glittering presence on the silver screen. These film songs do suggest the excitement she generated when her movies first appeared. And how many truly major singers she inspired! Joan Sutherland recalled meeting MacDonald a few years before her death. Said Sutherland: "I still had stars in my eyes."

An excellent demonstration of Jeanette MacDonald's artistry.......1998-12-18

The highlights of this Jeanette MacDonald CD include her excellent singing of Delibes' "Les Filles de Cadiz," the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria," and the "Jewel Song" from "Faust." A much-underrated artist, MacDonald proves here that she can handle a wide range of music, from concert songs and opera arias to familiar tunes from her operetta films. Particularly fine are her renditions of "Only a Rose," and Herbert's "Romany Life" (in spite of an amateurish male chorus). Highly recommended not only as a tribute to filmdom's first lady of song, but also to listeners who enjoy both opera and musical comedy.

Don't let the low price fool you!.......2006-03-02

I have a very large CD collection because I have never let low prices scare me from a purchase. Yes, I have bought some dogs but I have bought just as many full-priced dogs as the super budget kind. Many of my favorite CDs cost a one dollar or even less. This CD comes from Sony. The line is known as Infinity and almost all of the performances come from Russia or Georgia (the European Georgia, not ours). This particular CD has some rarely played Strauss waltzes plus the more famous ones such as the Blue Danube. The performances are excellent in every way. There is plenty of warmth and great playing and most importantly, plenty of energy. The rarely played waltzes make this bargain a must for any serious Strauss lover.

Good Collection Bad Performances and Recordings.......2000-06-22

This is a good collection of various pieces of music written by the genius who was Johann Strauss. However as is the case with so many classical collections this CD has terrible recordings and bad performances. Then again I guess you get what you pay for, seeing as how this CD was 4.27 when I published this review, I guess in a way that makes this CD an okay deal since it does give you a good taste of what Strauss' style was like. Personally, if I hadn't been given this CD I'm not sure I would have bought it.
