stinky for Einstein.......2007-08-03
Generally Einstein is always a winner but this was not in our book (Baby and Me) Try someone else before buying . The libary is a great resource to check it out ahead.
Lame.......2007-07-22
I was really disappointed in this CD. I was expecting a toned-down version of real classical music, but it sounds really fake and tinkley and weird. Not soothing at all.
Sounds like a cheap plastic toy.......2007-06-20
I have these DVD's and I can tell you that they will not be a huge part of my baby's development. I received them as a gift from someone that thinks that all you need to do is plunk your child in front of a TV all day without giving the baby any attention. You can see why these DVD's are popular at Day Care Centers or what I like to call, "Concentration camps for baby's with lazy parents", because they know that they can sit their kid/baby in front of the TV and let them turn into a thoughtless zombie while they listen to Baby Einstein totally ruin classics by Bach and DeBussy by playing the music with very cheap midi keyboards. I can get better quality music by whistling Dixie with a mouth-full of saltine crackers.
Also, it has been proven that classical music has nothing to do with the cognitive development of young people. Now, teach them how to play piano or violin and you have yourself an actual YOUNG EINSTEIN, but listening to this kind of music does nothing for the development of the brain. It is just for lazy parents that can't sit down with their kids and play with them or read them a book.
would make you sleepy.........2007-06-15
its a good product with very fine music and my toddler realizes that it is sleep time, if I play it. he goes to bed and sleeps after a couple songs. I have trouble in some songs are some months.. dont know why.
Kid's Music.......2007-06-08
I bought this CD for my grandniece, but after listening to it, I determined that no one would ever play this for her except me. I would have kept it for myself but I have the grown-up versions of each of the classical masterpieces on this CD. So, I ended up returning it for a full refund. If you want your kids to be exposed to classicl music, it's a great buy. But if you don't think they will get to listen to it, don't waste your time.

real metal at its finest.......2007-08-02
devildriver is some of the best metal out there these days. if you miss pantera or superjoint ritual or even early 80s metallica then this is for you!
i love devildriver.......2007-08-02
i was blasting this cd in my car today with the windows rolled down and i came to a stop next to this other car and some old man looked at me disapprovingly like i was the freak
devildriver rules awesome live band great cd

Whatever............2007-08-02
Does anyone else think this band is just trying too hard to be accepted by the metal fans of the world? They just seem so forced to me. As far as I'm concerned, all their stuff sounds pretty much the same. Bottom line: I believe they're always going to be a "wanna-be" band, trying to show everyone how "heavy" they are. Any of you clowns who have been bamboozled by them, here's a hot tip, check out the new Behemoth "The Apostasy", or the new Obituary "Xecutioner's Return", or for real thrash the new Exodus this fall, or new Testament next March.
Let the chaos reign!.......2007-08-01
Without a doubt the heaviest of the three albums, DevilDriver has really nailed it home with "Last Kind Words". The CD is intense and, for lack of a better term, driving. It truly seems like DD has found their niche, and is quickly becoming the forefront of a new wave of metal to-come. Their combination of melodic, death, and thrash metal is brilliantly refined and fuses seamlessly. After first popping in the CD, you will instantly be blown away by the first track "Not All Who Wander Are Lost". You'll instantly notice the CD kicks off fast, hard, and heavy. The pace WILL create uncontrollable body movements, believe you me, and does a fantastic job of drawing you in.
"Not All Who Wander Are Lost" is DevilDriver's first single of the CD, and with good reason. The lyrics are much more intelligent and well thought-out in comparison to the self-titled album and "The Fury of Our Maker's Hand". You will also notice the band got a little carried away with guitar solos, however, they definitely add a unique flavor to each song. The next of my favorites is "Clouds Over California" which is eargasmic. The track truly displays the band's skill as a whole. "Horn Of Betrayal", "These Fighting Words", and "Head On To Heartache (Let Them Rot)" are also just as equally amazing.
Overall, I am becoming more and more blown away with each album. Long live DevilDriver.
The MIGHTY DevilDriver 4.3.......2007-07-31
Well, i must say i cheated on this one and bought it on import 3 weeks ago. Why the labels release a cd in the UK a month earlier is beyond me. Especially when trying to combat piracy.. Makes no sense.
Anyway, i thought they would have a tough time following up 'Fury' and i was right! But they succeed in making this CD just as good. What is best about this disc is the furious drumming. Excellent!
The songs are reminiscent of 'Fury' but not a repeat. The awesome 'Clouds over Calif' is great and the track that follows 'Bound by the Moon' is SLAMMIN! will be a pit fav.
'Burning Sermon' and 'Tirades of Truth' are smokin as well.! As a whole this CD holds up well. The production is in your face and the riffs are killer. There are not many 'hooks' per se, but that is made up for by the pure brutality!
One of the best bands around for their Genre, and a definate top 10 in the 'best of' category for 2007! A must have for all headbangers! The question has been answered, DevilDriver is for real and they are here to stay.

Compare this to John Mellencamp's previous hits set, The Best That I Could Do 1978-1988, and it quickly becomes apparent how much the artist formerly known as John Cougar has grown in the second phase of his career. Following a 1994 heart attack, the songwriter transformed from cocky jukebox hero to compassionate everyman, trading in big pop riffs for sublime, politically charged songs that echo the outspoken work of Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young. Spanning 25 years, this 35-track set incorporates most of the last collection along with more recent hits over two discs in nonchronological order. --Aidin Vaziri
Customer Reviews:
A Nice Collection of John Mellencamp's Work.......2007-07-27
I discovered "John Cougar's" music in the early 80's when Jack and Diann hit the local air-waves, purchased the Uh-Huh album due to all the exposure on MTV, and once he put out Scarecrow, I and almost everybody I knew was enjoying his music.
I casually bought a few more of his offerings over the years, but had kind of lost interest over-all. I wasn't really into the Folk-rock style he was shifting towards. All of that changed in 1995 with the release of Whenever We Wanted. It ROCKED! It is my personal favorite album besides Scarcrow. Anyway, in the past couple of years I have been slowly replacing old CD's with newer "remastered" versions. Mr. Mellencamp's entire catalog of albums has been re-released. Currently, they are at bargain prices. And many offer bonus tracks.
Well, I had a decision to make. Should I buy all of his single albums or this collection which has the hits off practically all of his albums? Some of his early albums really had only one or two tracks that I wanted and those were found on this collection. So, even though I already had bought about 6 of his remasters (from American Fool thru Whenever We Wanted) I decided to go ahead and purchase this 35 track 2-CD set.
When I sat down to load it into my Ipod, I realized there were about 19 new songs that I previously did not own. Sound quality is good. Basically identical to the re-master series. This would be a great collection for any casual fan, or as an introduction to Mellencamp's music.
Very good compilation!.......2007-07-24
This is a great introduction to JMC to casual fans. I have listened to a few songs of his on the radio and but never owned any of his older albums. This one sums up his entire music career. He is a great singer/song writer and I would highly recommend this album.
review songs.......2007-06-11
There is a whole lot of songs in this album. There were many good signature songs that I enjoyed and got to know but there were a few songs that I did not want to hear again. I think I got more of my money's worth on this album.
John Mellencamp's.......2007-05-03
Excellent, keeps you rockin' & dancing to the beat. Makes a great gift for those who love John Mellencamp's music. Hey we are over 50 & we just love his music!!!
Words Can't Say How Good This Music is!.......2007-03-31
Two CDs, 37 songs and most of them were massive hits this album is great value. There's so many hits on here, you select and listen to the big songs you here all the time on radio and played by cover bands in pubs all the time such as Jack and Dianne and Small Town to name just two, then as the CD moves to the next track you realise this next title whose name you'd forgotten is actually another great song and big hit that you also hear all the time. I never knew Mellencamp had so many hits but this album is more than evidence of his great talent.
You can also get this double album in a version that comes with a DVD (check first which version you are buying as the Amazon one on this page I'm reviewing is just two CDs) but even just the double CD of music is more than worth whatever the price is.

Constantly exhorted to "sing," string players naturally try to emulate that most beautiful musical instrument, the human voice; no wonder they literally want to get their fingers on the treasures of the vocal repertoire. Joshua Bell has appropriated some of its best-loved songs and operatic arias, from Mozart through the romantics to Orff. Slow, sustained, lovely and yes, singing, these beguiling melodies and wide emotional range are eminently well suited to the violin. Credit for most of the arrangements is given to J.A.C. Redford, a well-known film and television composer, and indeed the throbbing strings and jarring modulations typical of sound-tracks invade his orchestrations, in startling contrast to the composers' own. In Debussy's "Beau soir," pianist Frederic Chiu partners Bell so beautifully that one wishes he had supplanted the orchestra in all the songs with piano accompaniment. The violin transcriptions of the vocal line closely follow the originals, except for Redford's compulsive habit of adding octaves in the repeats and jumping from the lowest to the highest register. Of course, Bell is very good at all this, and it's the playing that's really the thing. His tone is ravishingly beautiful, warm on the G-string, radiant up high, and always deeply expressive. His love and innate feeling for the music---its inward simplicity, romantic yearning and passionate ardor---speak straight to the heart. In the only authentic violin part, the obbligato of Richard Strauss' "Morgen!" he is joined by the golden-voiced soprano Anna Netrebko; at first overly intense, she relaxes into a blissful, magical ending. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Serenity in Music.......2007-07-29
This is a beautiful cd. The playing is exquisite, there is a lovely variety of music and it just flows. If you're feeling stressful, this is the music to listen to, if you're feeling thoughtful, this music will make the process even more meaningful. If you need a spirtual tonic, this music can help fill you. It is now one of my favorites and I play it often!
Beautiful!.......2007-06-14
I think the reason I love this cd is because the music was not primarily written for the violin. Joshua Bell makes the violin "sing" the pieces. I especially liked Tchaikovsky's "None but the Lonely Heart." I've loved it since we sang it many years ago in our High School chorus and it is not on any of my classical cds.
Good choice.
Voice of the Violin.......2007-06-13
I was disappointed in Bell's popular music style. I love him playing Mozart with his verve and energy - as Mozart would have wanted his music played. This seemed slow and draggy.
Disappointed.......2007-05-17
I had heard one of the tracks on the radio, so I bought the CD. It was too high-ended, a little screechy.
Voices of the Violin.......2007-05-17
Voices is no only a great listen because of Joshua Bell, but it is relaxing and calming - for me that is a great way to let stress melt away.
Every song is well done. Of course Joshua Bell is a favorite.

While many hospitals across the country send new mums and babes home equipped with discs of classical music to soothe and gently stimulate babies' tender minds, Ultrasound brings together a delightfully well-rounded set specifically chosen for those still in the womb. Expectant moms will appreciate the effects of the mellow strains of Bach's Suite No. 3, the delicate playfulness of Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy," and Mozart's proven-to-make-you-smart Sonata for Two Pianos featuring André Previn. Debussy's "Clair de lune" is especially lovely as conducted and fluted by James Galway, and Leontyne Price is a warm blanket of comfort giving voice to Schubert's "Ave Maria." Indeed, these songs are aural balm to both parent and child long after birth. --Paige La Grone

Grandmother's Review.......2007-05-21
I purchased this product for my expectant daughter, and she says that it is the best gift she has ever received. She, herself, finds the music very soothing and relaxing, and she is certain that it is wonderful for her child.
great cd!.......2007-05-14
This is a fantastic product! I bought it to play for my unborn daughter and I started it when I was around five mos. pregnant. She moves all over the place when I put the headphones on my belly and I can even tell by her movements that she likes some songs more than others. I have done a lot of research into playing music for unborn babies, including the helpfulness as far as birthing positions when the music is played regularly. This cd fits the bill for all of the research I've done. It is completely worth the money!
Absolutely Love It!!!.......2007-04-02
I have a 6 month old daughter. I first purchased this CD when I was pregnant and would place my earphones on my belly for her to listen. I now use it in her room at bedtime and I absolutely love it. I have a collection of other CD's, but honestly this is my favorite. It is a very nice blend of songs. It is soothing for baby and parents. If you only buy one CD I would recommend you make it this one.
My daughter loved this before she was born.......2006-12-15
When I was about 18 weeks pregnant I bought this and two other CDs of gentle classical music and played one of them for her every 2nd or 3rd night, putting headphones on my belly. I was actually skeptical about this being "music for the unborn" but she really did react to this one much more than anything else I ever played for her. If she hadn't been very active that day I could always lay down in the evening with the headphones and play her music, and she's wriggle around. She especially liked #5 and #10. :)
She didn't seem to have much connection to it after she arrived, but she does enjoy music in general. (She's currently almost 11 mo old.)
enjoyable.......2006-08-03
I have enjoyed this cd thus far. If you have the money to spend, this is relaxing and enjoyable, however you can get similar music for free on your local classical station. So if you would rather save your money...just tune in on your radio dial. I am glad I bought the cd for the familiarity of the songs, but I also love just plain old classical radio.

something to have.......2007-03-14
These CD's are filled with all the awesome relaxing songs for the evening when you need it. It is just one of those must have items in your CD collection.
Excellent Music.......2007-02-19
This album was a "try and see" purchase but I love it. It makes great dinner music, great music to drift off to sleep with, or just nice background filler during social events needing a softer tone. It is not all solo piano music if that s what you are after; the other instruments blend very well however and don't challenge the piano playing. It is a piano album after all!
buy now.......2006-09-01
Want to know why I think the piano is the best musical instrument ever invented? Because no matter how the piano is played, it will always sound good. Whether the music is fast, slow, quiet or loud, it ALWAYS delivers with an appealing sound. This is something you need to buy.
Lovely.......2006-02-22
This is a beautiful calming cd. The playing is excellent and the pieces are well chosen.
Aesthetically Pleasing.......2005-09-14
I simply love piano music. If you're looking to relax, enjoy a peaceful time, then you must check out this album. If you truly enjoy piano music, this album is by far one of the best you can purchase.
As it says....it is the "Most Relaxing Piano Album in the World...Ever..." Well, I haven't listened to all piano albums in the world, but I don't need to, this one is just perfect for me, and I think you will agree!
I would say the pianists' are extremely accomplished. At times, I would admit-it's a bit 'spine tingling'!

Proof positive that one can be a virtuoso musician and also have heart, Dream Theater are in impressive form on this album, arguably their best. They do it by never allowing technical flash to overwhelm their songs; there's substance under the style, in the form of ear-catching riffs and aggressive rhythms. The opening "Pull Me Under" is, quite simply, a great song, from its sparse introduction to its heavy-duty main riff to its memorable lyrics. Dream Theater, as its name implies, is an introspective band, exploring the complexities of the human heart and bringing them to life with songs like "Learning to Live," "Take the Time," and "Wait for Sleep". Unlike many metal bands, they favor an optimistic outlook, as with "Another Day" and "Surrounded," and even the dazzlingly complex "Metropolis, Pt. 1" is an entertaining listen. -- Genevieve Williams

Best musical creation in existence........2007-06-21
After hearing this album, just WOW. I used to listen to most of DT's later stuff, which is quite different from this album, and thought that was the best, until I heard this.
First off, let me start off by saying it is Dream Theater's best work. Take a look at the band members:
James LaBrie--his voice isn't tainted at all. He hits AMAZING notes. Check out "Learning to Live" at 7:00. Other examples are in Another Day and Take the Time.
John Myung--a terrific bassist. Its a shame the bass is probably the least audible in heavy metal, but boy is he good.
John Petrucci--I'm dead serious, he's arguably the best guitarist in the world, knocking Joe Satriani himself on his knees. He can play virtually anything. The only problem, if any, is that his style doesn't allow him to express himself and bring soul into his music. He's a freaking machine.
Mike Portnoy--Arguably the best drummer in the world. He can play virtually anything, but, unlike J.P., he can really bring his soul into his playing.
Kevin Moore--At this point of time in D.T. history, he is the weakest link, but that's not saying much. The keyboards are huge in the band sound, and he plays his part well.
Ok so for the Lyrics: they are absolutely AMAZING! Here are two examples:
Take the Time:
Just let me catch my breath...
I've heard the promises
I've seen the mistakes
I've had my fair share of tough
breaks
I need a new voice, a new law,
a new way
Take the time, reevaluate
It's time to pick up the pieces,
Go back to square one
I think it's time for a change
Learning to Live:
There was no time for pain
No energy for anger
The sightlessness of hatred
slips away
Wow, the lyrics are so poetic and....magical almost. Amazing.
Now for each individual song, flawless in their own respect:
Pull Me Under (10/10): Lyrics are based off Hamlet. Really neat effects to give a certain mood. Also the creative twist at the end.
Another Day (10/10): I can't see why people don't like this song. This could be LaBrie's best song. The lyrics are about J.P.'s father's struggle with cancer. Jazzy with the saxophone.
Take the Time (10/10): Amazing vocals, amazing lyrics. Great show from all the band members.
Surrounded (10/10): I'll admit, the beginning of the song threw me in a weird mood the first time I heard it. It grows on you though.
Metropolis (10/10): Wow, so musically dynamic and creative. Lyrics are complicated its about a story that's hard to pick up. Maybe the best on the album.
Under a Glass Moon (10/10): Amazing solo. The lyrics are weird, I'm trying to figure them out, based on other DT songs, there's no way they just threw a bunch of words together.
Wait for Sleep (10/10): Moore really shines. Great piano/singing duet. Basically a prelude to Learning to Live.
Learning to Live (10/10): Wow, could be the best on the album. Great lyrics, epic portrayal of the theme, and AMAZING note hit by LaBrie. (at about 7:00) The lyrics have something to do with AIDS.
The thing with DT is that no one song sounds just like another one of their songs. If you listen to one don't be turned away if you don't like it, odds are you'll like one of them.
All that being said, BUY THIS SIMPLY PERFECT ALBUM! It is the best thing that has ever happened to me in my life, and a lot of people I know, please don't miss out!
Airplay in 1992?.......2007-06-12
It was hard enough to get any airplay on the rock and alternative radio stations in the early 90's unless you were Pearl Jam, Nirvana, or the like. Dream Theater managed to do it with an eight minute epic in Pull Me Under, what a fantastic song. The rest of the album isn't too shaby either, a definite recommendation for any rock fan.
Where images and words are running deep.......2007-06-09
Sometimes, really good things happen by coincidence. Before I actually review "Images and Words", an album of epic magnitudes, I would like to explain my discovery of Dream Theater.
While listening to AOL Radio, I clicked to, I believe the progressive station, and heard the "Rover/ Achilles Last Stand/ The Song Remains The Same" seven and a half minute medley from Dream Theater's mostly-covers album, "A Change of Seasons". Not knowing the glorious band I was about to get into, I bought that album and instantly loved it (I mean, come on, a 23-minute title track!)
It had been quite some time before I would soon rediscover my love for Dream Theater. Every now and again, I would look at lists of musicians and how high they rank, alongside bands and albums, and for each, Dream Theater ranked high (I read somewhere "Images and Words" ranked #2 on a list of the greatest progressive metal albums of all time). Deciding it couldn't hurt to revisit the band, and after listening to samples of "Pull Me Under", "Another Day", and I believe "Metropolis Part 1", (though I can't remember my reactions to the online previews), I bought it one day.
I didn't really know how I would feel after I listened to the album. However, I did know two things: 1) In an album, I look for the musical chops that I love and that will keep me hooked. 2) I knew what made me want to LISTEN to something.
That's the question I often consider when looking at an album. What about it will make me want to listen? Is it the clever use of lyrics that keep me puzzled and searching for the answers? Is it the untouchable talent that leaves me breathless (especially considering I am a multi-instrumentalist). Or is it the overall quality of something that keeps me listening to it?
Well, one night I sat down on my bed and played this album, and then it hit me: Dream Theater is an excellent band with dazzling songwriting, furious musical talent, and, to solve my own (problem may be overstating it, so I'll say concern), that it made me want to listen!
The way everything came at me was breathtaking! From the album jacket itself, the bright colors of the pictures, that flaming heart in a mansion's bedroom, the band's picture inside it what appears to be some coliseum, and the summery glow behind them. The vivid images easily accompany the music itself.
Ahh, there it is: the music itself. John Petrucci's blazing, and I mean BLAZING, guitar work. Eddie Van Halen and Yngwie J. Malmsteen may have invented the shred-solo technique, but John Petrucci gives many guitarists competition, as he displays intricate riffing, speedy solos, catchy hooks, and goes the whole, nine yards for us. John Myung, while not as dominant as John Petrucci, runs a tight ship, as well, displaying energetic basswork that will satisfy people who want to hear that. From the hammer-on solo (how many bassists have ever recorded THAT?!), to his overall basslines, he is a great musician.
Kevin Moore, though he didn't last, made a serious impression while still with Dream Theater. In just eight songs, he can prove that he can do it all. Dreamy, haunting piano lines, warm, lush synth solos (ahhh, that just says it all), and just general virtuoso skills on the keyboard. Mike Portnoy is an animal on the drumset. He pounds those big ol' plates like there's no tomorrow. This guy has some stunning chops, and yet, I feel sorry for the fact that he has an alcohol problem. You're in our thoughts, Mike. Anyway, as a musician, he's nothing short of magnificent.
And finally, there's the dramatic, ever-quotable James LaBrie. From his soaring, almost operatic vocals to his cool bounce-and-sway rhythm, he is the ideal frontman for a band like Dream Theater. I can hardly imagine them with a different lead singer, and can hardly imagine James LaBrie being any more perfect in a different band. When you put these five musicians together, you get the one-of-a-kind Dream Theater.
"Pull Me Under": A progressive opener that is perfect for kicking off an awesome album, with lyrics that say the person talking basically accepts death and all it brings. The heavy guitars and drums drive this song throughout, and James' repeated, "Pull me under", during the chorus, shows the hypnotic effects a song like this will leave on you. A great display of lyrics keep rolling, the instruments fire all of their guns at once (to quote Steppenwolf's "Born To Be Wild") and the song keeps it explosion at large until...everything stops! An amazing, eight-minute masterpiece stops on the spur of a moment, what an unusual concept!
"Another Day": Ooooh, there's a lot to say about this song. In terms of time, it's shorter than "Pull Me Under", at four and a half minutes. Lyrically, its focus is to keep faith and spirit and don't give up, hence the lyric, "so die another day". The songwriting on this untouchable song is in a balladic style. The acoustic-to-electric style of guitar-playing, a songwriting technique that is always used but never getting old, works perfectly, the lovely soprano sax guest musician provides two great solos and some unbelievably beautiful saxophone lines. Uhhh, it just displays the summery tinge this album can't help but contain. It makes me wanna pick up my own sax again (though I play alto), and learn this stuff again! James put his soaring vocals to use to just add more and more to the beauty of this. His vocal lines make me feel like I'm floating on a cloud in heaven! And of course, Kevin Moore's keyboards perfectly accompany this wonderful masterpiece. Such a beautiful song, man, that's just about the best way to sum it up!
"Take The Time": Another longer, progressive song, but nothing short of stunning, these lyrics are a bit more literal, telling you to take things as they come. It was also written as a bit of a autobiographical thing, describing how the guys in Dream Theater felt about all that was going on in their lives.
"Surrounded": A five-and-a-half minute work of absolute art! The first thing I noticed about this song is the synthesizer line taken from the Styx song "Loreli", that opens this song. There's just so much to love about this song, it's nearly impossible to describe! However, it's the perfect type of song to end your night listening to before you go to sleep. Lyrically, it seems to talk about refreshing your spirit, but I can't say too specifically the meaning of all the lyrics. However, this song will prove to be absolutely magnificent, along with all the others!
"Metropolis, Part 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper": A preview to the '99 album, "Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory". However, without delving too deeply into that, I'll describe this song. First off, it's one of the greatest metal songs of all time, period. It has that certain atmosphere, hard to describe what it is, but the opening, keyboard work gives you that feel that something great is about to approach. Then comes in John Petrucci's monstrous, chugging riffs, Mike's drums slam into it, and the whole song explodes into a nine and a half minute musical treasure! Musical chops all over the place, dramatic use of vocals, it paints such an interesting scene that you really want to know more about. It seems to go on and on like a road filled with fantastic journeys, because, well, that's what this album is. On that note, you might wanna check out, "Scenes From A Memory" to conclude this amazing tale. What a rocker this thing is, and completely artistic at the same time!
"Under A Glass Moon": This is one of my favorite songs on the album. Well, that's a bit of an ironic statement, because I absolutely adore all songs on this epic piece of art. Anyway, the opening chord progression gives the song a very night-time atmospheric feel to it, just so incredible. Then the rest of the song comes in and another great work is born! I especially love the part of the song where the drums speed up and James sings, "Outside the soundness of your mind/ Bathing your soul in silver tears/ Beneath a blackened, summer sky/ Praying for time to disappear". Oooh, the combination of the music and James' voice just sends a feeling to you that makes you grasp the huge proportions of it all. This seven-minute wonder has an enormous feel to it, and contains a stupendously awesome guitar solo by John Petrucci. I can't believe the critics at, I believe Rolling Stone, put it at #98 (but then again, these are the same critics at listed Eddie Van Halen at #70 of the greatest rock guitarists). Anyway, this song totally rocks, I mean, you can just feel John Petrucci GRIND out that guitar work, SHRED out those solos. The practically overwhelming experience of this, after "Metropolis, Part 1", is sure to deliver sixteen and a half minute of undoubted bliss. And, to some extent, this is a religious song, like "Surrounded". It seems as though somebody has died and they are going to heaven, hence the lyric, "Night awaits the lamb's arrival" and "By your hand, I've awakened/ Bear this honor in my name".
"Wait For Sleep": A two and a half minute ballad completely written by Kevin Moore, about a female friend of his who felt a bit empty inside and needed something good to believe in. The haunting, yet romantic piano line perfect accompanies the incoming string section, and James adds a bounce with his vocal rhythm that incorporates an even greater feel to the song.
"Learning To Live": Ahhh, the closer of a dynamic album, and at eleven and a half minutes, it's sure to last. The keyboards open, the instruments progress, and James tells the tale of, in my opinion and the opinions of others, learning to live with AIDS. This song may also just mean living with the everyday troubles life gives you, but lines like, "The 90s bring new questions/ New solutions to be found/ I fell in love to be let down", and "Once you're touched you stand alone/ To face the bitter fight/ Once I reached for love/ And now I reach for life". In all honesty, it's a sad topic, but it's delivered in such a beautiful way, this song, though it may actually drag on in some areas, is just dynamic and is a great way to end an album on this level.
The great thing about "Images and Words" is that it brings out my reflective, sensetive side, while still being able to also draw out the side of me that can listen to an eight-minute rocker. It explores different emotions with different approaches, yet Dream Theater has a very noticeable style that sticks out when compared to other bands of their (slightly recent) time frame. There's a lot to love about this album, A LOT, I mean it. I don't know if any reviews can cover the vastness this album covers, but I did my best to describe with a leviathan of a musical masterpiece "Images and Words" is. There's really no other album like it, so if you get, and I really hope you do, cherish it for what it is, all the beauty in the images (album booklet) and words (the music itself), and together, how it paints such a stunning picture.
If you like music with incredible talent, deep, epic meaning and the power of, say, a modified Rush, "Images and Words" may just be that album. It seems to be just so much to describe, but I, both as a musician and a music-lover (and I can say that I've heard quite a few acts out there), I give kudos to this album without a doubt, as it is truly worthy of a five-star rating. For your enjoyment, get this, as I know you'll love it as much as I do.
Simply amazing !.......2007-05-08
I have recently discover Dream Theatre, a band that I knew but never took the time to listen to their albums. Now I did and I have discover one of the best band that I have ever known, they are so talented!
The music is complex, played with perfection by incredible musicians!
The more I listen to them, the more I like, think I'll turn into a fan soon ! This album is amazingly good. A perfect score !

Peter and the Wolf Howls!!!!.......2007-07-28
My boys, 4.5 and 2, absolutely loved and were captivated by this rendition of the Peter and the Wolf. The 2 year simply enjoyed the music, but my 4.5 year old was very excited to know that a French Horn was the wolf and according to him, "how the wolf eats the duck". When certain instruments played, he learned that certain characters in the story were going to be involved. Highly recommend it and its a great way to spend time with your kids, listening to classical music and picking out the different instruments.

Great telling of a classic story as a classical music introduction.......2007-01-04
I remember being introduced to the idea of classical music telling a story with Peter and the Wolf many, many years ago. As each character in the story appears, its theme (and the instrument playing it) is introduced. Then the story takes over and builds to its climax and resolution with just the right amount of fright and humor for 2-4 year-olds.
Peter is clearly presented as a child who is disobedient and mildly punished for it, but then he is also brave and resourceful in fixing the situation he has caused. Finally is also merciful to the wolf (although he does put the wolf in a zoo, if that really bothers you). So the story has some subtle hints at morality without it being too oppressive.
In this CD version, the narration is clear and the pacing seems very adequate for even 2 year-old's attention. They often ask to hear it again, and they love the picture book I bought to go with it - see another review. They know all the instruments names, and can identify the characters just from hearing the music.
Excellent for kids and adults.......2006-11-04
A very good version of the original. Bowie's voice is just right and the orchestra is right on. Excellent to demonstrate to kids the different instruments in a orchestra and a good story as well. I listened to it when I was young and also now when I am old. It still is great to listen to the music and the story telling.
Dont have this CD but have the vinyl.......2004-05-26
I admit I do not have this CD, but I do have the vinyl version of this album. It contains just the first two pieces, Peter and Britten's Young Person's Guide... It was released by Columnbia on green translucent vinyl! Combine that with the Red Label that Columbia used and it is quite the colorful Album... I remember that I bought the album for the Britten, big Britten fan here, and partially the novelty of Bowie narrating Peter. The Britten is great, and Peter is very good with the beauty of the Philly strings, which has always been Philly's strong point. If I were looking to replace my vinyl copy, which I am not, I would not hesitate to get this disk.
My son's discovery of classical music.......2003-05-17
My son's growing obsession with this story has truly sprouted since the purchase of this album.
Oddly enough, I never really knew this story or I don't remember it from my childhood, but once my dear sweet boy discovered it's haunting and charging sound, it's become a staple in my vehicle.
A perfect way to introduce classical music to any child -- tell them a story and have all the parts of the story be different instruments from an orchestra. Beautiful, just beautiful..

Not A Music Critic ... But A Lover Of All Music ..........2006-08-29
Let's not be too harsh regarding this CD. I purchased this as my first baby step into the classical genre and it absolutely made me fall in love with classical music and appreciate it in a way I never could when people tried to make me like it. It is such a wide variety of classical music and I find romance to be joyful, tragic, gentle, harsh & a complete roller coaster that I found all in this ONE CD! It also made my boyfriend who hates, or shall I say HATED classical music NOW like it! That was an amazing feat! We now have many classical cd's and we always go back to this one for dinner parties, romantic baths and other things... I played this CD so much, that it got damaged and I just purchased another one to replace the one I bought years ago. If you are a critic, stay away from this cd, you will rob it of its beauty & innocence. If you are a beginner and want to open your mind to all that classical music has to offer, then this is the best money you can spend. BUY & ENJOY!!!
Misleading title scheme.......2006-01-01
This is what bothered me about the CD. Three of the biggest eras in classical music were: the baroque era, the classical era, and the romantic era. Now, with CD's titled baroque favorites, classical favorites and romantic classics, one would expect these CD's to be era specific. Such is not the case. If you read the back of the CD it even says "from the romantic era of music", but the there are composers like Vivaldi (baroque) and Debussy (impressionism) on this CD. About more than half are from the wrong eras. So this music is romantic in the non-musical sense of the word, which is fine, but a little bit misleading.
Don't Bother...Really!.......2005-02-21
Not what I call classical composers! THis cd is annoying in a way I really can't stand. It lacks the pure elegance of the classical days. Don't buy this cd unless you want a phony all around bad album played by cheap ameteurs.
Could have been better.......2004-02-19
I think the quality is good, and better on a few tracks, but all these romantic tracks?? Not what I listened to. Actually I was kind of disappointed; I had purchased an abundance of the "Favorites" collection some were better than others.
I was kind of perturbed when some same tracks on this CD were on another CD, and visa versa.
Still, I suppose for the price, one can't go wrong.
Some great tracks, but flawed nonetheless.......2004-01-12
Whether or not this CD lives up to its promise of "Romantic" music is not truly a concern, being that the entire nature of classical music is that it is open to one's own interpretation. However, I can speak to the quality of the recordings themselves.
A few of the tracks (Reverie, Canon, Sarabande, a few others) are absolutely superb. Well recorded, and played with genius bravado, coupled with great arrangements (it was interesting to hear Reverie outside of its native instrument, the Piano). Most of the tracks, however, are absolutely horrid. Fur Elise for the sheer amateurish quality, Vivaldi's Concerto for oboe and strings sounds like it was copied from an old phonograph record, as does Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty Suite, Mendelssohn's Spring Song, and Puccini's Gianni Schicci, and a few others. A few other tracks still are played horribly, most of them already mentioned.
All in all, for the price you are getting quite a few good tracks, but don't expect stellar quality. I would instead recommend Chopin's Nocturnes and Mozart's and Tchaikovsky's Piano concertos of you're looking for something romantic.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful.......2007-08-02
My son just turned 3 and absolutely loves Peter & the Wolf. He knows all the animals by heart and listens to it over and over. I grew up with this album and was so happy to find the Leonard Bernstein narration since I think it's the best. Highly recommend it.
Brings back old memories.......2007-05-13
Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!!!! I remember listening to Peter and the Wolf as a child and loving it. Now that I have three kids of my own, I thought this would be a great purchase. My 5, 3, and 1 year olds love it. Plus if you are a parent who wants your kids to appreciate music, Peter and the Wolf (Leonard Bernstein's narration is the best), The Carnival Of The Animals, and the introduction to the orchestra will give them a goods start. For $6.97 you cannot beat the price, and it would be an affordable and memorable gift to give friends as they begin to raise their own little ones.
Could be better.......2007-03-29
I am a little dissappointed with Bernstein's narration of Peter and the Wolf. I prefer the Disney rendition with Sterling Holloway. Bernstein didn't seem to put much drama into it, he sounded distracted and it just plain fell flat. The music was fine, and he did much better with The Carnival of Animals.
Surprised at how wonderful this is -- a huge hit!.......2007-03-18
I bought this for "music appreciation" education for my 6 yr. old. I thought it would be challenging to get him, as well as my 2 1/2 and 1 1/2 yr. olds, to let me play it in the car. I also thought it would bore and/or irritate my husband -- so I was nervous a bit. Well, I was completely wrong. We all "love" it.
It is high quality and pleasant to the ears. We play it whenever we are in the car. The narratives in "Peter and the Wolf" and "Carnival of the Animals" are very engaging and hold their attention. At home, my 6 yr. old sits at the dinner table and recites the entire narrative (along with the appropriate tune representing the characters) of Peter and the Wolf -- complete with Bernstein's accent! Great memory/recitation exercise and he does it voluntarily. My two year old asks for it EVERY TIME we're in the car and many times my 1 1/2 yr. old is fussy until we turn it on, then she's as content as can be.
All the kids have picked out characters to "be" in Peter and the Wolf and have assigned them to Mom and Dad. It's a lot of fun. My 2 yr. old always calls out when the cat comes along, "That's me!!" and my 1 1/2 yr. old always says, "Correct!" just before Bernstein does. The littlest to the oldest listen intently and engage with the narrator.
The last piece is my personal favorite, as it introduces each instrument in the orchestra and how it all fits together, and the music is beautiful (the kids like the music too, but prefer "Peter..."). My 6 yr. old has learned a lot from the last piece without realizing it; when I explain instruments of music we hear elsewhere, he calmly informs me, "I know that, Mom."
This fascination with the CD has lasted a long time; we did not just start listening to it last week. I think that reflects on how enjoyable it is for the whole family. My husband has told me repeatedly how glad he is we bought this. It is also a good buy here on Amazon -- I paid several dollars more for it.
