It was in connection with the Icejam Quintet that I first became aware of the genius of George Maurer. The Icejammers, a ragtag musical combo that practiced faithfully twice a week for the better part of a school year, gave one public performance and then disbanded, was a figment of my imagination as a novelist, but the instant I heard Georges piano bridging chapters of my audio tape of the novel (Rookery Blues), I knew that here was an instrumentalist of the highest order -and a composer of outstanding talent and versatility. Listen to this, his latest album, and Im sure you will agree. Notice the mood changes. From the hearty to the wistful. From the serene to the insistent. Dark to light and back to dark again. And from solo to combo and back to solo, for George has added penny whistle, flugelhorn, and the George Maurer Quintet to certain pieces. And how I love it. Closing my eyes, I see my dear old Icejammers reunited once again.

This is a wonderful collection for fans of American composers and choral works alike. Stephen Shewan writes music in all media but has a special affinity for vocal and ensemble works (these can be heard on an earlier Albany release, TROY149). The Celebration Overture, written in honor of the 50th anniversary of KUHF-FM, Houston, Texas, is both celebratory and optimistic. Much of the same spirit carries over to For Dancing Hearts and Tunes while the two other choral pieces reflect a more meditative mood. Randall Thompson didn't compose a particularly large catalog of works but his choral works (which can be heard by these same forces on TROY362) and his beloved Symphony No.2 have assured him a place in the American repertoire. Frostiana, based on Robert Frost poems, is as perfect an example of his charm and nationalistic spirit as one could hope to hear. Ron Nelson writes some of the most exuberant music for band ever composed, and you might remember his wonderfully breezy Savannah River Holiday recorded so many years ago by Howard Hanson. The Te Deum was commissioned by the United States Air Force Band and Singing Sergeants. It is a work full of color, splendor and rich sonorities. Finally we have a work by the Czech-born Nelhybel, a truly prolific composer (over 400 published works) who really deserves greater exposure. The Psalm 150 is a rich, reverent work. The Roberts Wesleyan College Chorale is noted for its unique sound and performs regularly with the Rochester Philharmonic in a wide-ranging repertoire.

When listening to the first track on the recording, I was struck by the resemblance to an American composer not even represented on the album, Aaron Copland. It is always dangerous to say this - I do not mean the the composer has in any way copied Copland, but that the celebratory spirit evident reminds me of the spirit present in Copland's work. My only complaint about this wonderful performance is that it leaves one wanting more - I could wish for a large work/suite. I also must single out Shewan's "For Dancing Hearts and Tunes" as another such example of Americana.

The performance by the Roberts Wesleyan Chorale is exemplary, although the voices seem somewhat muted, almost background to the instruments (this being the reason that I rated the recording 4 stars instead of 5).

The performances on the remainder of the compositions are very good to excellent, particularly on "Choose Something Like Star" from Randall Thompson's "Frostiana" and Ron Nelson's "Te Deum Laudamus".

This recording would certainly be a must-have for any collection of chorale music, let alone collections of American music.

One of my most-played CDs.......2005-10-13

This is one of my most frequently played CDs. I find it perfect background music for meditation, prayer, reading and other tasks, as well as a good CD that doesn't disturb people at work.

This is not intended to be organised as a church service or a concert performance per se, but rather, as the co-producer Carol Rosenberger states, 'this album is meant to recreate an experience many of us have treasured: slipping inside the doors of a cathedral and finding oneself alone in a vast, quiet space with light streaming through stained glass windows. The organist begins to play gentle music, and one is lost in contemplation...'

As a churchy person, I've often had the experience of working or sitting in an empty church while the organists or their students practiced. This recording in many ways reminds me of that experience. Of course, our organ is a far cry from the pipe organ in Atlanta's Cathedral of St. Philip, with over 5000 pipes (and our church does not have a 5-second delay reverberation, either), 4 manuals and 96 ranks. This Aeolian-Skinner organ is a genuinely stunning instrument, but as with any instrument, it takes the right performer to bring out the fullness of the sound from it.

Todd Wilson is just such a performer. His playing is solid and well-suited for this task, with occasional flashes of brilliance. Mozart's 'Adagio', Bach's 'Jesu, Joy of Many's Desiring', and Barber's 'Adadio for Strings' (here arranged for the organ) are truly wonderful pieces. The programme here is a diverse collection of pieces from Baroque, Renaissance, and later pieces, including folk tunes and a few modern compositions. Todd Wilson is a church organist and music director at Church of the Covenant in Cleveland, Ohio (a city with not insignificant music resources and life), and is also head of the Organ Department at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He has had an international performance and recording career.

I applaud the decision to make this a double-disc set - the producer writes that there was just too much good music to limit the selection. Thus, there is a method to the organisation, given the availability of two discs. The first disc has more simple pieces, easily recognisable melodies and well-known hymn/sacred pieces. The second disc has a bit more complexity of music.

There is a booklet that is particularly designed for young people, so that they may become more familiar with the organ as an instrument, and this type of music.

This is a truly wonderful recording.

The Æolian-Skinner organ in St.Philip's Cathedral, Atlanta is the finest example on Earth of eclectic organ...and the last- really-marvellous instrument erected by this firm. Flutes and Erzählers speak directly from Heaven...and the organ, despite electric, seems to have tracker action! Listen to Bach's BWV 731 and 648: they sound like played on a Silbermann instrument!
Todd Wilson is a delicate musician, a poet of the organ and a genius in the choice of the stops.
Buy also the other recordings of this Æolian-Skinner by Robert Delcamp (Naxos) and Alan Morrison (Gothic)...and don't forget that Michael Murray recorded in St.Philip's Cathedral for Telarc the finest rendition of Poulenc's "Concerto in sol minore per organo, archi e timpani" under the direction of the late Robert Shaw.

By All Means Get This CD.......2003-09-06

I found this wonderfully relaxing CD above and beyond my expectations. Do you enjoy organ music, then listen and explore the sacred music of J.S. Bach. This music will relax you: keep your muscles relaxed as you work on a time deadline for a large project, or doing some casual items around the house.

The hiss that one reviewer refers to is undoubtedly the organ's wind supply. The wind can be heard on most organ recordings.

Even without his highly regarded symphonies, various instrumental works, and monumental and influential work on the revision of the English Hymnal, Vaughan Williams would have made a major impact on 20th-century music with his many original choral works and his folksong arrangements. In fact, Vaughan Williams's folksong-collecting work was one of the more important contributions ever made to English music. This disc offers a wonderful collection of a cappella choral pieces, including some of Vaughan Williams's finest folksong arrangements. Besides "Ca' the yowes," "Full fathom five," "Greensleeves," and "The Turtle Dove," the program includes rarely heard masterpieces such as "Alister McAlpine's Lament," which brilliantly captures the mood of the song with serene, sensual harmonies and gently flowing vocal lines. Ralph Vaughan-Williams loved "the lilt of the chorus at the music hall...children dancing to a barrel organ, the rousing fervor of a Salvation Army Hymn, St.Paul's and a great choir singing at one of its festivals...the Welshmen striking up one of their own hymns...the cries of street pedlars, the factory girls singing their sentimental songs." This disc somehow reflects all of these influences. I think it makes him a true folksong specialist!!!The music included herein covers the whole of the composer's long career-from "The Willow Song"written when he was eighteen, to "Heart's Music",composed three years before his death at the age of eighty-six. The Holst Singers along with the two soloists:Ian Bostridge (tenor) and Michael George (bass)are very excellent in their renditions. The choir is perfection in balance, diction, ensemble and emotional content. Bostridge with his sweet and pure tenor almost moves one to tears especially in "Greensleeves" and "Ca'the yowes". And Michael George was also very moving in his solo:"Loch Lomond". It is as if the entire performing group were aware of a statement made by Vaughan-Williams before his death: "if the roots of your art are firmly planted in your own soil, and that soil has anything to give you, you may still gain the whole world and not lose your own souls."

Songs that Never Fade.......2005-11-21

A selection of the best of RVW's folksong arrangements performed with insight and restraint by the Holst Singers, with help from soloists like the incomparable Ian Bostridge. Vaughan William's respect for these folksongs is evident in his exquisite settings, which reveal their depth and subtlety, without obscuring their simplicity.

This is a recording to cherish.

Heavenly, introspective, definitely the most soulful songs!.......2003-03-16

This collection of English and Scottish folk songs moved me to tears and made me experience a plethora of emotions over and over again. The beautiful melodies flowing from this CD conjure up melacholy, joy, sadness and wonder. They crystalise the most common human experiences and the mystery of existence into certain folksong idioms that, once listened to, will stick in your ears and stir your heart strings for a long time.

Salute to Vaughan Williams for documenting, preserving and arranging these gems of English and Scottish heritage. Holst singers performe splendidly. Their discipline and professionalism, and a sense of artistic direction shine through.

I highly recommend this CD along with John Rutter's "The Lark in the Clear Air" for all the sensitive people who take interest in classical music and traditional folk songs.

I wish I can give this CD 10 stars!

Album Description

A program of classic organ works on the new Fisk organ, a large two manual organ by C. B. Fisk in Macon, Georgia. This is its first appearance on CD. At the center of the program is the American composer Leo Sowerby's seldom-recorded Prelude on "Land of Rest". Leo Sowerby (1895-1968), who won the Pulitzer Prize in music in 1946, was probably America's greatest composer for the organ. His genius lay in his ability to fuse American individuality and expression with traditional European forms. With clear forms and experimental harmonies, Sowerby composed for both concert hall and cathedral, taking full advantage of the American Classic organ. Organist Robert Parris was featured recitalist at Disney Hall during the 2004 American Guild of Organists convention in Los Angeles, and he will once again be a soloist at the AGO conference in Chicago in July 2006. The recital reveals the wide range of music possible on this organ, from Baroque to American classical.

Good Straightforward Music.......2003-10-15

Music is performed in its original settings. Beautiful choral work; four singers, two of each gender. Lacks the histrionical egotism found in so many Irish ballad recordings. Very much worth it.

The Choir sounds great.......2001-08-09

This is a really wonderful CD of The Westminster Choir. It contains music typical of a Westminster Choir concert program, such as Brahms, some 20th century pieces, spirituals, and folk songs. There is a very warm tone to this CD. I would, however, like to criticize the recording and editing engineers of Gothic. The disc was recorded in a very dry space in Charleston, S.C., and there was no reverb or spaciousness added to the sound at all. Maybe they were going for a more "pure" tone, but I think they could have done more. The recording in general is a little dry.

Most amazing CD I own!.......2005-09-12

I was originally given this disc as a gift one Christmas, because my choir director is in another group with George. I fell in love with it immediately. Every track on the album is a gem. The piano is deeply touching and the hints of famous melodies are very moving.

I have nearly worn out the original now from so much use. It's great to unwind with at the end of the day, but it also works well for an upbeat mood too (The Water is Wide track). It has gone with me on all of my vacations and I can't imagine being on an airplane now without it.

Five stars, across the board. I'd also recommend George's A New Tradition Christmas.

A superb and truly heartfelt piano CD.......2000-06-16

George Maurer is one of the best piano players in the field of contemporary instrumental music recording today. Land of Rest may be his best album ever - in fact, it is. The CD is as heartfelt an album as you can hope to hear. There are songs on Land of Rest that may literally make you cry, they are that touching.

Whether playing original compositions or his own intrepretations of others (such as an Estonian folk tune), George has complete command of the piano. Some songs on Land of Rest are uptempo and cross over into a jazzy mode, but most of what's here is serene and contemplative (as the title would indicate) without ever resorting to a new age vibe or syrupy overkill. Some pieces are solo piano, some have acoustic accompaniment and some have subtle synthesizer undercurrents.

But, regardless of which song you choose, all are suffused with a humanity that will be readily apparent to all but the most jaded and cyncial listeners out there.

In addition, George has a true writer's flair when it comes to liner notes and the ones on Land of Rest are wonderful, filling us in on the whys and wherefores of the songs in a way that few artists even attempt to do, let alone accomplish to the degree he does.

I have listened to a lot of piano music over the years and Land of Rest sits among a very small and elite group for me. It is a recording of power yet so gentle and human that to be left unmoved by it would require a heart of stone. My highest recommendation.
