With her first album in eight years, there seems to be little doubt that Paula Cole is aiming to shake the Sarah McLachlan-wannabe tag that has hung with her since the days of Lilith Fair. Though she rode the alternative wave during those times to her eventual notoriety, this time around Cole appears ready to paddle the mainstream. Enlisting the help of some notable, if unfamiliar, songwriters, the Massachusetts-bred singer has the striking (and professionally trained) voice to make the cut. Cole devotees will drift to a pair of ballads: the sexy, bass-driven "In Our Dreams" and "Lonely Town," a saga of isolation guided by the piano of Herbie Hancock. And while the 11 songs are cohesive enough to run as a package, cuts that stand out as potential hits include "El Greco," a declarative song of restitution, and "Hard to Be Soft," a jazz number decorated with Brazilian-themed rhythms. I spotted Paula in Rockport Massachusetts last week....I live there during the summer and I knew that she grew up there and still visits frequently. I "googled" her and discovered that this new album was out. I immediately bought it and can't stop listening to it. The tracks are sexy, hypnotic, jazzy, meaningful, addicting, exciting....just amazing!
I'm so glad she's back....better than before and ready for big big things to come. Paula, if you're reading this....get ready for the grammy's!!!
Please buy this record and listen to it over and over again...Play it while on the treadmill or at an itimate candlelit dinner party. Something for every music taste.

I first heard Paula sing at an "Earth Day" concert in Boston more than 12 years ago and have been a fan ever since. That she's finally put out a new album is great, that it is her best one yet is even better. music from a grown up musiciain for grown up listeners.

I feel in love with Paula Cole for the first time when I guy I worked with loaned me "Harbinger" telling me she is `amazing'. I heard the exquisite voice that is both powerful and soft, haunting melodies married to life given lyrics and I knew she was not so Ordinary. Then I fell even more in love with her when I saw her on Peter Gabriel's DVD "Secret World Live" and her incredible stage presence. She stole my heart again with "This Fire" and I didn't want to wait! "Amen" followed and I believed in Love again.

Now here it is 8 years later and she release "Courage". My Lovelight is indeed kindled again. She has returned with a very interesting Album. Her direction seems to have shifted or matured some what and this is may be partially due to the producer's input both good and no so good. However, it is Paula that shines with her voice as exquisite and rich as ever. Her lyrics are like fine lace dressing the album beautifully. "Lovelight", "Comin' Down", "El Greco", "14", "It's My Life" and especially "I Wanna Kiss You" are the cream of the crop and excellent. "Lonely Town", "Safe in Yours Arms" and "In Our Dreams" are good and may take a few times through to get you.

I feel that all of her albums have songs that are exceptional, some that are good and one or two that maybe considered average. This album is the exception to this rule and contains two songs that in my view are less than average. Unfortunately they choose add two duets to the collection - "Hard to Be Soft" and "Until I Met You" which are weakly produced to sound broadwayesque. The male vocals compared to Paula's voice are severely lacking and disjointed. These tracks just don't fit and seems like some other album's tracks got mixed in with Paula's especially so with "Until I met You". All that being said "Courage" is still a must have for any Paula Cole fan!

I give it 4.5 out of 5 and I am still very much in love with Paula Cole. Please keep more music coming as I will be waiting. Welcome back and thank you for your "Courage".

I believe this to be her best yet and would recommend this to the people
who really follow her music. It is very much a Paula Cole CD. You can feel she really put her heart and soul into each note she sings on the CD.
A must have for her Fans!

And I've Forgotten The Courage I Used To Be........2007-07-21

So it's been 8 years since Paula Cole's last album, "Amen". If you've visited her website you know why she's been gone for 8 years, and the reasons weren't always happy ones. I am glad Bobby Colomby (Blood, Sweat & Tears) helped Paula and encouraged her to summon up a new album. I must preface the rest of my review by stating that although I like Paula Cole's music, I feel each of her albums has had a few duds, and "Courage" is no exception. Also, I'm not entirely satisfied with Cole's musical direction on "Courage". She took a more adult contemporary approach that is jazzier and more Norah Jones-like.

That said, Paula Cole's vocals and lyrics continue to be the main draw on "Courage". Musically, I prefer her earlier works. I don't know if this change is due to so many years away, Paula's maturation process, Bobby Colomby's influence or the move to Decca records, or all of the above. This isn't to say that there aren't any good songs--there are several, like "Lovelight", "El Greco", "It's My Life" and "I Wanna Kiss You" that remind you of why Paula Cole is so great. There are several more that are okay, like "Comin' Down", "Lonelytown", "14" and "Hard To Be Soft" which showcase some different musical directions for Paula. Then there are the duds--"Safe In Your Arms", "In Our Dreams" and "Until I Met You" which really didn't register for me.

Overall, is "Courage" better than her last work, "Amen"? Yes. "Amen" was incohesive, but she had several strong songs like "Amen", "Pearl", "Be Somebody" and "I Believe In Love". I didn't find any songs like those on "Courage", but "Courage" has its charms. Still, I think Cole has yet to create her career defining masterpiece, and I hope it's just around the corner.

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

They sound tired.......2007-07-23

This one is just disappointing. I absolutely love GBS but this offering is not up to snuff. They sound raspy, worn-out and tired. This is evident by Alan's changing several melodic lines to avoid signing high. The energy of both the band and the crowd are not near as high as in the Great Big DVD. This is nice to have the more recent songs, but I wish it would've been a better performance.

Nonetheless, an average performance by this band is still better than most bands playing today.

WONDERFUL GOOD!!!!!!.......2007-07-04

I will admit that I was a bit slow in learning of this excellent group and discovered them quite by accident. I love Celtic music and had recently heard them singing Capt. Kidd on Pandora. I went straight to Amazon and ordered Courage & Patience & Grit. It not only has 20 something songs on the CD, but extra tracks on the DVD portion for the live concert. These guys, Sean, Alan & Bob, are not only extremely musically talented but smart, witty and funny as well. VERY well worth every penny!!!!! I plan on buying more of their product!!!!!

Different, though enjoyable.......2007-05-24

To be honest, they have added a little weight, lost a little pep and seem to be focusing on a little older crowd. These are all just little perceptions that a long time fan would pick up. Some of the songs are done very well, some not so well. I loved Gideon Brown (which is not on the Hard & The Easy CD) but other favorites came off a little flat. I missed Tickle Cove Pond, which I thought would be included surely. Coupled to these disappointments is the fact that Sean seemed to make comments bordering on inappropriate for youngsters during the video performance. Did I enjoy it, yes. As much as the Great Big DVD? No. Their performances in that video may not ever be matched. The music on the Hard & The Easy CD is EXCELLENT and I must suggest you get that CD coupled with this 2 disc set to experience it completely. Great Big Sea is always able to provide truly amazing value with their releases. A video DVD and CD are included in quite a few releases and I look forward to the next one. In summary, this was a good addition but not quite up to par with past presentations.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

A great album. The singles "No Man's Woman" is poignant and "Jealous" is an immaculately beautiful ballad. There are some great songs on this disc; they work even better as a collection. A great showcase of O'Connor's angelic voice. Lyrics in booklet.

Her Healing Room .......2005-11-08

Her first full-length album in 6 years, her last release was in 1994 with the beautiful "Universal Mother" which received positive reviews but suffered from O'Connor's reckless behavior at the time. Well, this time around she turns a little religious than on her previous records. The opening track "The Healing Room" features a baby's laughter (O'Connor's own child) which is a nice lullaby. Her abilities as an emotional performer has always separated her from the norm, it's unusual to come across a human who's this good at expressing her emotions through music. The lead single "Jealous" is stunning, mainly because of O'Connor's breathtaking vocal loops, she sounds lonely and afraid, but then again, when doesn't she? Sinéad is indeed a master of emotions. She often sounds hurt and abandoned, songs like "Dancing Lessons" and "Hold Back the Night" is timeless portraits of human longing and suffering, but on songs like "No Man's Woman" and "Daddy I'm Fine" she defies her anger and recoils. On "The Lamb's Book of Life" she asks for forgiveness from her fans: "I know that I've done many things/ to give you reasons not to listen to me/ especially as I've have been so angry/ but if you knew me/ maybe you would understand me". When it all comes down to it, O'Connor returns with a strong conviction, but she often sounds lonely and afraid, but she remains one-of-a-kind performer.

Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21

The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.

Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

USMA Glee Club scores a real hit.......2006-11-14

This album is awe-inspiring. I bought the album after hearing an out take from "Men of Freedom", the tune is from an old Welsh battle song. You will recognize the tune if you saw Zulu Dawn with Michael Caine. Many of the other songs are equally powerful and mesmerizing. The only songs I didn't like were when the Glee club used guest soloists. They were less impressive and, in my opinion, took away from the strength of the group.

I liked the multiple verses sung from America, I wished they would have given the Star Spangled Banner the same treatment. The Mansions of the Lord is powerful and supremely reverent, as is Rise Up. I would dearly like to hear more from this talented group of soldiers.

Reverent, Full of Love.......2006-09-26

When I saw and heard this music broadcast Veteran's Day on TBN and my friends serving in our Armed Forces in Iraq saw it broadcast on Armed Forces Network, I was so happy to find the stereo CD and companion Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound DVD on Amazon. I cannot stop listening to it! The 60 minute musical program, reminiscent of the great concept albums of years ago, is one of the most reverent, intelligent and passionate portrayals of America's character ever produced. It contains many styles of choral music - all superbly performed by the world famous Cadet Glee Club of West Point arrayed in breathtaking formation on the altar of the massive 100 year old Cadet Chapel. There are richly textured vocal a capella songs such as "Rise Up O Men of God", "Manisons of the Lord", one of the most popular new hymns written, and "America (My Country `Tis of Thee)". Your buttons will burst with pride when you hear the brand new song "Men of Freedom" introduced by a single Cadet then followed by a cascade of additional voices building to a unified and thunderous declaration of defiant freedom in a style reminiscent of the great Welsh Male Choirs. Four songs highlight the power and majesty of the largest church organ in the world. You'll have to fight the urge to stand at attention when you hear and feel its power kick in on "Lest We Forget", "On Great Lone Hills", "Jerusalem" and "This Christmastide". The musical variety is further enhanced by the addition of brass and percussion for the rousing marches, "The Longest Day" and "Non Nobis". When was the last time you heard these two songs - one by world famous singer, songwriter and teen idol, Paul Anka and the other a medieval celebration of thanksgiving sung in Latin! The rich background vocals of the Cadet Glee Club musically frame two songs that underpin the message of this album - Bravery and Sacrifice. "Into the Fire" by NYPD's Daniel Rodriguez made me want to immediately rise up and rush to anyone's aid and when he holds that note at the end - wow! Tony Award Winner Lea Salonga's performance of the classic Christian hit, "Via Dolorosa", (one of the top 50 Christian songs of all time), is "The Passion of the Christ" embodied in a 5 minute song. You will alternate between tears and goose bumps. Her performance of the Spanish stanza will overwhelm you. Finally, Irish song writing master, Phil Coulter's wistful "Take Me Home" is accompanied by beautiful piano and guitar and introduced by a new poem entitled "I Am A Soldier" that is sobering reminder of the oath our soldiers swear to and the actions they are bound to take. God bless them!

A great bonus of the CD and DVD is that they both include a stylish lyric booklet as well as commentary by the producer on why he chose each song.

On the back cover of the CD and DVD cases is the statement that this production was created to honor the men and women of our Armed Forces, past and present, and the great values of America that they defend. This it surely does!! Also, it states that the producer is contributing a portion of his wholesale proceeds from its sale to organizations assisting our wounded soldiers. Bravo, Mr. Coppi.

Good CD.......2006-07-19

Wonderful songs and wonderful renditions of the songs. I must say, though, that the numbers would have been better if they were performed with more "ooomph" (for instance, "The Star Spangled Banner" could have been sung with more power and the arrangement could have used more creativity). The wisest decision on this CD was the inclusion of the numbers from Ms. Lea Salonga (whose hauntingly beautiful voice is able to effectively draw listeners in) and Daniel Rodriguez, one of America's newest tenors. Overall a good CD.

A real disappointment..........2006-06-10

I was so excited to stumble upon this album when a local music store was going out of business and selling CD's at great discounts. I love Glee Club music, I love patriotic music, and I love cathedral/chapel accoustics. Unfortunately, this album did not live up to its billing.

My primary complaints with this recording are twofold: the overuse of unison singing and the unnecessary inclusion of guest soloists. The beauty of glee club music is the rich chords, which are thankfully heard in many songs. To my dismay, though, there are many songs that mostly or entirely omit the beautiful harmonies that make glee clubs great.

As for the guest soloists, I don't understand why a singing group which obviously has many wonderful voices would bring in outsiders for an album like this. Actually, I do know why they would do it, and it's obviously a marketing thing that has financial implications. As reasonable as this may seem, it just cheapens the experience for me. Another great feature of glee clubs (and college choirs more generally) is the lack of polished, perfect, professional singers. There is something raw, authentic, and refreshing about a bunch of college kids singing together. Why bring in random people with no particular connection to the group?

To be fair, "Rise Up, O Men of God" and "Mansions of the Lord" are fantastic. I'll continue to play this album to listen to those songs. However, much of the remainder is somewhat forgettable.

I purchased this CD at the Tower of London gift shop while on a trip to England a few years ago. This album is superb, with beautiful digital re-recordings of the music from Queen Elizabeth II's coronation. I have listened to it countless times. This wonderful music reminds me of the great heritage we in America share with Great Britain. Breathtaking, inspiring and uplifting, this album will not disappoint.

One of the Greatest Ceremonies the World's Seen.......2002-01-14

The Coronation of HM Elizabeth II in June 1953 was one of the most spectacular public events the world has seen before or since. At the Queen's request, the Coronation was televised live on the BBC, the first coronation to receive such treatment. This is not a recording of the actual Coronation Service itself, but rather a recording, made in Westminster Abbey, of the actual music (with much of the same arrangements) that was used at the Coronation.

You will not be disappointed with this album!

This CD contains some of the most beautiful music ever written. The music performed at Queen Elizabeth's 1953 coronation was recorded in 1993 and released on CD. If you like high church music and you have an appreciation for what was probably one of the most spectacular public pageants of the 20th Century, you will love this CD.

I have given numerous copies of the book as a gift to all my friends who are first-time grandmothers to give to their new grandchid and was unaware of the music that now can accompany the book. Great album with an esoteric mix: from the the Navy Hymn(Chrimson Tide) to rich orchestrations (Braveheart and Gettysburg) it has something for everyone.

If you have broad taste, you'll love this one but be warned- some of these tracks could turn older speakers into mush. Got a theater system with powered sub-woofer? Crank it and watch the windows pulsate with great sounds. Highly recommended.

Telarc is one of the best, if not the best recording company of classical, jazz, and instrumental music. I have bought music with the Telarc recording label since 1984. Every CD I have from Telarc is flawlessly recorded with exceptional detail. The image is so clear, its as if you were there infront of the orchestra. This recording is no exception.

This collection of movie music ranks right up there with "The Great Fantasy Adventure Album." Having seen all these films (except Gettysburg), and owning tapes of about half of them, I have to commend whoever selected these particular themes for the disk. For the most part, listening to this CD is like watching the movie all over again, at least for 3 or 4 minutes. Favorites include: the pulsing insistence of "Speed", the heroic "Apollo 13", the deeply evocative "Crimson Tide" (including an excerpt from the Sailor's Hymn which was also featured in "Titanic"), and the spirited, glossy "Independence Day" theme. A great album for doing housework!

I have been a fan of Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra for a long time and they never cease to amaze me. This is a spectacular collection of great music from some of the best movies made within the last 5 years. The digital sound effects that are included on this cd are extremely realistic, especially the F-16 flyover. This is one of Erich's masterpieces. I hope he will come out with many more this good.
