Editorial Reviews

"Maurer has a feel for his instrument that makes for an immediate emotional response..."
Product Description
Traditional Christmas carols are given a present day interpretaion with the reflective and original piano musings of "Minnesota's premier new-age pianist," George Maurer (KARE-11 TV, Mineapolis). George likes to describe this as an album that you could almost play "year 'round" because he is so subtle in his approach to melody and form. "It is definately not "HO HO HO!" and Christmas in your face..." says George. Quiet, reflective, drawn out, creative, and still seasonal. Its what makes music from behind the Pine Curtain and from George Maurer special.......

Customer Reviews:
An important recording, beautiful singing (but uneven sound quality in the transfer).......2006-10-20
The New York Pro Musica Antiqua, founded in 1952 by Noah Greenberg, gave many Americans their first taste of medieval and Renaissance music, both vocal and instrumental. Their work introduced a public generally ignorant of any composers who lived prior to Baroque to the sound of sackbutts (sp?!), rebecs, krumhorns, lutes, viol da gambas, and other staples of music-making between 1200 and 1700. Their recording of the 12th century liturgical drama, The Play of Daniel, was groundbreaking, their later LPs of Elizabethan madrigals and court music were a joy to the ear. In the Pro Musica's early days, they were fortunate to have on board the countertenor Russell Oberlin, a graduate of Juilliard, whose voice, bell-like and true in both the upper and lower registers, was devoid of the shrillness often heard in falsetto.
Mr. Oberlin is one of the fine vocalists in this early recording, and it is unfortunate that the quality of the transfer from LP to disc leaves something to be desired. The medieval christmas "carols," sung for the most part a cappella, are a pleasing combination of lively and quietly meditative songs, and it is easy to see how the Pro Musica served as a model for the many early-music groups that emerged between the 1970s and the present day. This disc is a must for the serious collector, or student of medieval music, and, even with the uneven sound quality, we can appreciate the excellence of the performers.
Historically Significant - Terrible Audio.......2005-12-21
As another reviewer points out, this CD is based on a recording made ALMOST 50 YEARS AGO. The sound quality is very nasal and brittle, and lacks the fullness that modern listeners have come to expect. So, unless you're interested in this CD as an artifact of musical history, you may be disappointed. If you're looking for somethng "listenable", there are any number of contemporary groups that specialize in music from this period.
One of the Greats.......2002-12-12
This recording may be almost 50 years old, but it still resounds as the classic that alerted an unsuspecting public to the beauty and joy of medieval music. The New York Pro Musica would go on to record much more medieval and Renaissance music (including re-recordings of these selections), but this is now the only of their recordings in print. Until the entire output is restored to the catalog, this lone example must suffice. It is hauntingly beautiful and rousing by turns. This is a recording that should please a wide range of music lovers, but particularly those who already have found a place in their hearts for music of the medieval court and countryside.

Folk music from around the world - Christmas style.......2002-10-27
A look at the origins of these songs (including Ireland, England, Austria, Persia, Tibet and Israel) suggests that these lovely sisters have a lot in common with Britain's Maddy Prior, who's love of old-time music has yielded some of the most distinctive Christmas music ever recorded.
Silent night has been recorded far too often, although Annie, Marie and Jeannie sing it so beautifully and theirs must surely be one of the best versions there is. There are other familiar songs here - Little drummer boy (which they sing a cappella, very nice), Children go where I send thee and What child child is this.
Marie and Annie each wrote one song for the album, which is definitely one to listen to in quieter moments. In such a setting, this a real pleasure to listen to.
I NEED to hear this CD EVERY Christmas............2001-12-13
We were given this CD as a gift a few years ago from a relative who lives in Ithaca, where The Burns Sisters appear and are well known. I literally sobbed at the beauty of "Let It Be" that first year, and every year since then, shivers go up my spine when it starts. Their wonderful harmony and choice of songs for this particular CD..............well, ...I just never tire of it.
I have given it as a gift nearly every year since then....to someone. This belongs in your Christmas collection. Wonderful in the car too, for singing along with.
In a way a winner.......2000-07-08
I am not a fan of the Burns Sisters nor did this album make me a fan. However, I would recommend the album if it contained nothing but the track "Come Come" - a bit of Sufi poetry set to a simple and repeating tune that is a wonderful variation on the Christmas season's religious music.
Luckily, the remainder of the album has music that is enjoyable - a good choice of material done with solid musical taste. And the breadth of the material - including Judaic and Tibetan pieces as well - sets it apart from the scores of competent Xmas season recordings.
Incredible Harmony.......1999-11-28
Just returned from a concert at the Night Eagle Cafe where the Burns Sisters appeared, accompanied by Jim Henry. Wonderful concert, at which we purchased three CDs, this among them. Can't say enough about the originality of the arrangements, and the sincerity of the presentation. The fact that they are sisters is integral to the unity of their performance. Musicianship is superb!
The Burns Sisters Are Wonderful!.......1999-08-05
I saw my then-housemate Annie Burns (Hi, Annie!)do this material with her sisters at Oliver's in Ithaca, NY just before Christmas in '91.
Unforgettable "Drummer Boy." Usually I just cringe at this song the way it's butchered on most Christmas Compilations. The Burns sisters' a capella version was so beautiful, it had me sobbing like a baby to hear it.
I'm very glad to see they've recorded these songs with Rounder.
