About the Artist
Rebecca Dru began her music training at the tender age of three on piano. Born and raised in Newton, Massachusetts, she comes from a musical family of seven children. Rebecca has been living in Los Angeles, California for the past 26 years, where she frequently works as a singer on recording sessions. She has also written songs for syndicated television and movies and has been a featured guest artist and teacher at UCLA. She was a winner in the '97 John Lennon Song Contest, the 1999 PARENT'S GUIDE TO CHILDREN'S MEDIA Awards, the 1999 GoGirls.com internet award, the 1999 CHILDREN'S MUSIC WEB AWARDS and the 1999 JUST PLAIN FOLKS MUSIC AWARDS. Rebecca Dru was a featured artist on TempoItaliano.com which specializes in Italian music as well as Playhouseradio.com which features family-oriented music. She has played to audiences worldwide, ranging from the Arkansas River Festival in Wichita, Kansas and Symphony Hall in Boston, Massachusetts to the San Vincenco Caffe in Italy and other various venues. large and small. around the US and abroad. In 1986, Rebecca Dru's CD "Heart of the USA" was featured in USA TODAY and in the 70's, she was a member of the hot disco band "BROTHER & SISTER" which was featured on "Dick Clark's American Bandstand". She has received rave reviews worldwide.

Having experienced the joys and challenges of motherhood, her commitment to children and their education has been fortified and she has been donating some of the proceeds of this project as well as her time to various educational organizations associated with children. Rebecca has also developed an instrumental music program presenting all the instruments in the Orchestra, Symphonic and Marching Bands as well as some unusual instruments from other cultures to the children. This affords children the opportunity to actually touch and try real musical instruments and to desire to learn how to play them. She also produces "CRASH-BANG-BOOM", a percussion perfomance program in which each child has the use of drums, everyday objects and various percussion instruments. The experience of the drums/percussion instruments allows each child to shine on an equal level. They learn to feel, to read and play rhythms together as an ensemble and have fun while learning.

But on a lighter note, what she enjoys most is simply savoring all of life's little moments...having fun, laughing and...boogie boarding, snorkling, horseback riding, long hikes with her dogs, tropical beaches, creating tantilizing tastebud delights with her daughter, sculpting, a glass of wine with friends in the Tuscan countryside, a good trashy novel, watching "ALL MY CHILDREN" curled up in her husband's arms, ice skating with her daughter, painting, practical jokes and spending time with her family and friends.

Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.

This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.

Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.

My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

        I love this CD. When I first got it, I listened to it over and over ... especially the second half. Fine musicianship from the musicians and the singer, I think. I passed it to other baroque aficionados who were similarly delighted. Those not used to baroque instrumentation may think the songs all sound alike. I felt, however, that there was great emotional variety in these many lute songs. Beautiful.

        I recently purchased this cd and had high hopes for it, being a fan of such music. When I actually got to listen to it, I was quite dissapointed. All of the songs sound identical, the same voice, and the same tunes. The woman's voice on this CD got a bit annoying since it sounds as if she's singing with her gag reflex. All in all, I'm not very thrilled with this cd.

            I own this CD along with other recordings by Maria.
            Her flute melodies capture the listener and transport them to a serene and beautiful place. Melodies that evoke feelings from deep within and allow you to feel peaceful in a way that no other music can so easily do.I have heard many of Maria's compositions however "Ancient Voices from Within" truly surpasses any CD I have ever used to help cleanse and heal the human spirit.

            Gwen Catley (1906-1996) was an extremely gifted British-born soprano who had unique talent in using the highest area of her voice, though the entire range is pure, liquid, and even. Hers is not as light a coloratura--nor as refined--as the late Rita Streich's, nor nearly as secure as Amelita Galli-Curci's. That said, hers is still a voice you will find appealing in each of these 19 selections, all remastered by Michael J. Dutton, who provides some of the finest 78-rpm transfers I have heard, which can only be described as being truly honest transfers. The disc offers a good cross section of the gems of the coloratura soprano repertoire from operas by Mozart, Rossini, Verdi, Gounod, Thomas, Bizet, Offenbach, and Meyerbeer. When I consider an album of this nature, it is the SONG literature that I find of the greatest appeal, only because so much of this literature is not performed frequently today. This disc offers a number of the Galli-Curci-type items, such as Bishop's Lo, Here the Gentle Lark, and The Pretty Mocking Bird, and an especially fine Nightingale and Rose from Saint-Saens' Parysatis, which for me is the winner in this collection. The legendary pianist, Gerald Moore, accompanies Miss Catley in four selections while the remainder are with orchestral accompaniment by three well respected conductors. Alan Blyth supplies his usual informative, interesting notes. If one wishes to have a really outstanding overview of this highly lauded English artist, I would recommend this one wholeheartedly. LGH
