Beautiful Music.......2007-02-07
Let's just start this off by saying BUY THIS ALBUM! It is truly amazing. I've been anticipating this album to be released ever since I went to my first DATH show a few weeks ago. I was hoping they could capture all the energy they put into their live show onto cd and they did so wonderfully. Each song is beautifully written and sung with such conviction and emotion. If you havent had a chance to hear any of their songs check their myspace out here... [...]

Back to when I believed in fairy tales...........2002-09-30
If you could, just for a moment, return to the days when fairy godmothers were real, when you really could turn four white mice into four white horses - then just buy this CD for a few smiles, a lot of memories, and the original Rodgers and Hammerstein tunes. This CD took me way back to when magic was there, and now it makes me wonder, everytime I listen to it, if maybe the magic isn't still there? Maybe I should just call on my fairy godmother..... A true heirloom of a CD.
The Glass Slipper Fits!.......2001-04-21
This is an excellent compilation of songs that express the longings, fears and exuberance of the Cinderella story. Rather than just relying of the romantic side of the myth, producer Bruce Kimmel adds depth to the story by including songs from The Slipper and The Rose and Sondheim's Into the Woods as well as the Disney and Roger & Hammerstein Cinderella versions.
When Susan Egan plans her strategy in "Promise Him Anything" and Pamela Winslow expresses her fear in "On the Steps of the Palace," the listener becomes aware of Cinderella's human side. Likewise, when Christa Moore shares her fantasy world "In My Own Corner" and Christina Noll expresses her thrill of her dream coming true in "Impossible/Suddenly It Happens," the listener is reminded of the powerful message of Cinderella's theme: dreams DO come true.
Fortunately, the compilation does not exclude humor as well. "The Stepsister's Lament" by Farah Alvin and Alet Oury is hilariously poignant; the lyrics "Why would a fellow want a girl like her? A frail and frocky beauty!" could be the alltime wallflowers' lament. And Jonathan Freeman's "What Has Love Got to Do with Getting Married?" is a droll piece of practical cynicism to his Prince son. (The song reminds me of the film Moonstruck. When Olympia DuKakis asks her daughter Cher, "Do you love him?" When Cher answered affirmatively, her mother muttered, "That's bad.")
Also, the musical bridges add to the suspense of the Cinderella story. "Midnight", "The Ball," and "If The Shoe Fits" from Prokofiev's ballet are beautifully orchestrated and remind the listener that the Cinderella myth is adaptable for many forms of entertainment.
I was a little disappointed that "So This is Love" and "The Work Song" was not included, but I guess I'm partial to the Disney version. The 1950 cartoon was my first introduction to Cinderella, and to my delight, my nephew enjoyed it as well thirty years later.
Nevertheless, this CD shows the timeless appeal of the Cinderella myth. Its beauty, humor and suspense is contained here in this magnificent collection.
Magical collection fit for a princess!.......1999-04-13
I was thrilled to come across this collection. One of my favorite movies, The Slipper and the Rose, had been out of print for many years. This CD includes 4 of the songs from that movie and though not by the original artists, just as good. The songs range from the whimsical to the romantic to a few comic gems, all from various stage and film Cinderella scores. "Tell Him Anything" from the Slipper and the Rose, a powerful song filled with longing and despair is sung movingly by Susan Egan, a nice change of pace from the cheerier, more sparkling numbers.
The score from Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella is so charming and catchy it's fun to hear it again by new artists. The performers, all apparently Broadway singers (?), are all beautifully performed with exuberance and style. The orchestration is lush and appropriate to the material.
Fabuloso!!!! A must have!!!!.......1998-08-11
This is an AWESOME cd. It has songs from the original Rodgers and Hammerstein version, the Disney version, and Into the Woods. This is a faboulos collection of songs. Definetly buy it. NOW!!!!!

Fantastic Finish.......2007-04-12
Perhaps my favorite Bad Astronaut release and definitely one of the best records of 2006. One Giant Disappointment is one of my favorites here. It made me cry everytime I heard it for 2 weeks, Ghostwrite, Minus, Best Western, San Fran Serenade, Go Humans are all excellent. Joey is consistantly great, one of my favorite artists of the last 15 years.
Ghostwrite for Soft Schedule.......2006-12-21
Fist thing first: it's a great album. Songs are so hooked on a soap space, since the 'Houston...' LP that they are actually in so often feels like one. Good Morning Night' and Beat' still capture the old fashion secrets of Joey and added satisfy feeling that came with new ways such as 'Best Western. Only misguided feeling is the whole concept evolution through the "album" idea. After Derrick passing, it's hard to collect the motives of sound to create tracks and waited for a new born viewing behind the main ideas of the songs. Joe Strummer's Streetcore suffers by the very same thing. At the some point 'Twelve Small Steps...' seems like a some kind of superior collecting rare songs and b-sides album with a thrilling feeling in the core that is both dark and celebratory. As a legacy it's an ear-catching affair to it's white noise. As a tribute; it'll be along any forever...
Hmmmmm.......2006-12-17
Ok, the other reviewers before me have done a great job of talking about the background of this band and the trajedy that befell them. Therefore I will skip to my review of what I feel is a lackluster album (it appears I'm in the minority, which is nice... I love Bad Astronaut). Anyway, there are no real great songs on here, just a bunch of good ones. For any other band that would be more than satisfying, but this is Bad Astronaut! Their first two albums are without a doubt two of my favorite records of all time. The band grew so much between Acrophobe and Houston... and I was hoping that 12 Steps would be even better than the first two. However, this is not the case. Ignoring the death of one of the key members of the band is unfair, but we are reviewing the cd here and I can't change my rating of the music. Hopefully over time this album will grow on me, but unlike the first two it has not hit me immediately.
It's still heartbreaking music.......2006-11-15
This is a very different CD than I was expecting, it's hard to know how losing a pivotal member both musically and personally will affect the music they create. Many people fall apart and give up, while others take the pain their feeling and focus it back into their music. Fortunately, Joey Cape is more of the latter than the former. I've always felt that the greatest artistic achievements have come from pain (see: Disintegration by The Cure, Tragic Kingdom by No Doubt, etc.), so while this CD wasn't what I was expecting, it is by no means disappointing.
I first heard of Bad Astronaut right around the time that Acrophobe came out, and it was such a breath of fresh air from the music at the time. There was so much thought put into the music, the cello was present, but never overused, it was just incredible song writing and musicianship (is that a word?). Their second CD was even better than the first, "My Son" literally drove my mom to tears the first time she heard it, and the maturation of the band continued. After Derrick took his life, there was a lot of talk that this record would never be released, it was too hard for them to face this. Luckily Joey took the pain and heartache and created a beautiful, if sometimes disjointed record.
This record was being written when Derrick died, so some songs were written before, some after, and the disparity between the two types of songs are huge. There are the "normal" Bad Astronaut songs like Go Humans that for some reason reminds me of Grey Suits, and there is the haunting Minus which has been one of my favorite songs for quite a while. The real highlight of this CD is the songs written to/about Derrick. You can almost see Joey trying to cope with it as the CD progresses. In One Giant Disappointment he almost sounds angry at Derrick for leaving him, for not struggling on. In Stillwater, California he pays tribute to the ones that have left us including Derrick, but also Jason (Thirsk? Sears?) and Richard (?). Finally there's a general acceptance of things with Thirteen Steps, the minor chord he drops into right before the "devastating" is just heartbreaking. There is so much emotion and depth to their songs.
So sadly as we say goodbye to Bad Astronaut, we can thank them for some beautiful songs, for putting everything out in the open so we can see what they were dealing with at the time. As I listen to the backwards guitars that have a very "Beatles" feel on Thirteen Steps, I smile, realizing that I was very lucky to have been clued into them, and realize that as long as Joey is creating (the Tony Sly split is beautiful) and the rest of the band keeps doing their thing, we'll all come out ahead.
The last chapter of the Bad Astronaut saga.......2006-11-15
Bad Astronaut. A band that was made as an excuse for 2 old friends, Derrick and Joey, to play together again. With Derrick gone now, Twelve small steps, one giant dissappoinment, is Joey's final goodbye to his best friend.
From start to finish you can hear the honesty and passion in the music, writing and Joey's voice. Even in the songs that are not written about Derrick {or don't seem to be written about derrick}, you feel the power in this album. This is record is truly a gift to the world of indie rock, punk, or all music lovers.
After hearing it for only one day, it moved me almost immediately. This is a must for all Bad Astroanut, Wagon, Caper, and Derrick fans. I highly recommend this for indie rock lovers. You will not be disappointed. The boys in Bad Astronaut put their heart and soul into this recording and I for one am going to miss this band's contribution to the world of rock.
Not to mention Derrick's contribution to the World of Punk Rock and Rock.
Do yourself a favor and get this cd.
Thanks to the Guys of Bad Astronaut. And thank you Derrick for the inspiration. You will not be forgotten.

One Small Step For Heiru, One Giant Leap for Hip Hop.......2005-11-29
This album is amazing!!! It may not be their newest, or even their best, but it is still phenomenal. This album embodies everything about the group. Sure the sound quality is not great, but it adds to the underground ambiance that surrounds them. The lyrics and the beats mix together perfectly to create a must have for anyone who claims to like Hip Hop.
lo-fi and enjoyable introduction to an interesting band.......2005-08-14
Heiruspecs came to Grinnell College while I was there, and dropped a fun and engaging show for the would-be Iowan-liberal-arts hip-hop connoisseurs. Heiruspecs is an energetic, live-instrument hip-hop act (a la the Roots). Their sound is built around simple, infectious 2 or 4-bar guitar licks and pounding live rock drums and enhanced by witty lyrical exchanges between the MCs and the occasional flute or keyboard riffs to keep things melodically interesting. As of this recording, the turntable and sampler were apparently not in their repertoire, so the arrangements are pretty minimalist and built more for the muddy acoustics of a college show than for the studio. This record isn't their most recent and doesn't have the greatest sound quality, giving it the feel of a talented college group's demo disc. The lyrics can be quite poetic and reflective (eg. "Meters"), and more concerned with making a point than dropping the sick rhymes. Of course, then there's the song about Siamese twins on the dating scene (I think), but never mind.
Regardless, this record is fun but it doesn't quite capture the live energy of the band... it merely hints at things to come.

Gem.......2006-04-20
Listeners looking for categories should avoid this album but they should avoid any kind of music demanding your attention and concentration. Meredith Monk is NOT a pop musician, this is very idiosyncratic and beautiful because it leads you into a new universe. Her extraordinary vocal technique is enchanting and amazing becuase it opens your mind onto something new and unexpected. If you're ready for a new musical experience, if you're interested in new musical horizons, if you're not a consumer of music, you should go on a journey with Meredith Monk because your imagination will lead you towards pictures of dreams, dance and daring. This is musical poetry at its best.
A Lover of Music.......2004-02-19
I have listened to a great many things, and believe that I can appriciate many forms of music, from traditional and classical styles, to pop, to new age. I like most of what I hear. Having said that, I have never heard anything as absolutely terrible as this album. This is the exact opposite of music. Music is supposed to make you feel something or move you in some way on some level. This album fails that miserably. The only thing I felt was a headache, which was self induced by slamming my head against a wall to try to block out the noise, for that is all that Turtle Dreams really is, noise. It is simple chord progressions accompanying various vocal screeches, pops, and whistles, all incoherant, and terribly out of tune. You can't sleep to it, you can't even think while it is in the same room as you, all you can do is wish that it was over. Do not buy this CD, do not check out this CD, do not recommend this CD to a friend unless they did something to really make you mad. Avoid this like the plague, or wish for a plague to come down upon you and remove you from this world before you remove yourself.
.........2001-01-13
if you plan on purchasing this album, first listen to it while sleeping at night..over and over. this album is quite good and altered the way i listen to music.
Dreamy masterpiece.......2000-12-15
Being introduced to Meredith Monk was one of the smartest things I have ever done. A friend of mine knew who she was and had me listen to her late one night. Needless to say I was blown away. I don't consider myself a 'singer' although I vocalize. I do not have any sweetness to my voice and don't write the norm. Well, Meredith Monk made me feel like an amature. I heard her and it was like the gates of music opened up. I absolutely fell in love with her. She made me realize that I don't have to sing like stinkin' Mariah Carey, who I do not care for anyway, and have a successful career. In my opinion, what Meredith Monk has done is more important than anything a pop singer could ever come close to. This album will make you happy. It will make you sad. It will make you dance. It does everything for the mind. If you think you can master singing in these styles you deserve an award. Like the many she has. If you also compose along with it than you need me to hear it because this is just heaven to me. Mentally and physically this should be heard. Especially for the passionate. If you like passion written in sound then do yoursalf a huge favor. Get one of her albums and shut down your life because this will bring you into something you should love.

Customer Reviews:
Harold Blumenfeld: "Rilke for Voice & Guitar".......2000-03-09
This CD set includes "Rilke for Voice & Guitar" by Harold Blumenfeld. The composer submits this review of the work by Donal Henahan in the New York Times. "In Harold Blumenfeld's austerely beautiful 'Rilke', a cycle of three songs, soprano Rosalind Rees sang superbly, with a dulcet tone, unusual attention to dynamic subtleties, and flawless pitch. The songs, with the guitar softening contemporary asperities that a piano sometimes exaggerates, made their lonely, pained point with the utmost precision. The guitarist, David Starobin, performed with exemplary technique and great sensitivity as accompanist."
