Esta agrupación ha logrado ensamblar magistralmente el son, la salsa, con la música clásica. Una vez que uno escucha a Bach, Beethoven, Mozart reinterpretados por estos alemanes (Klazz Brother) y cubanos (Cuba Percusssion), no podrá concebir de otro modo la obra de estos grandes compositores.

Like others, I was skeptical when I heard about the idea, but this collection easily won me over. What I find so interesting is that the arrangements are so good, so creative, it's as though these well-known classical pieces were *written* as Cuban music. You find yourself completely accepting this genre-bending experiment.

Extremely enjoyable -- as is their companion album, "Jazz Meets Cuba".

4 out of 5 stars Unlikely Crossover of Cuban Beats with Familiar Classics Yields Mostly Zingy Confection.......2005-12-28

Crossover efforts are always risky ventures that dance precariously between creative and contrived. There is definitely some of the latter on this 2002 recording, but surprisingly, far more of the former as the fruitful teaming of three German classical-jazz musicians and a pair of Cuban percussionist/vocalists puts a hearty Latin-flavored spin on some very familiar classics. Two of the Klazz Brothers, pianist Tobias Forster and bassist Killian Forster, took a fortuitous trip to Cuba and concluded the popular classical pieces they usually played could easily be adapted to the Cuban- and Afro-Cuban Jazz styles.

The beat-heavy results bear them out, as they developed fresh, energetic and lyrical arrangements of standard works by Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, Chopin, Schubert and others, that still respect the original compositions. The jazzed-up titles aptly (if a bit too preciously) reflect the changes - Mozart's Symphony No. 40 transforms into "Mambozart", Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 becomes "Salsa No. V", and Bizet's Carmen Suite turns into "Carmen Cubana". With titles like those, some of the pieces, perhaps because of their familiarity, come across as a bit too trite, for example, "Afrolise", which sounds bit too cocktail loungey to be too revitalizing a take on Beethoven's "Für Elise", and "Guten Abend", which sounds a bit like a somnambulant Vince Guaraldi take on Brahms's original lullaby.

However, the high points are abundant, starting with the three movements of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 "Pathétique," exciting pieces that feel culturally transformed by the sultry romanticism of the Cuban beats crowned by Tobias Forster's virtuoso playing. Also wonderful are the mournful "Czardas" and the conga-accentuated "Flight of the Bumblebee", both dominated by brother Killian's dexterous bass playing. The three others in the quintet are all equally superb musicians - Tim Hahn, the third Klazz Bother on drums, and Alexis Herrera Estevez (timbales) and Elio Rodriguez (congas), both of Cuba Percussion. The vital mix of sounds in what could have been a hopeless misfire makes for a genuinely exhilarating listening experience.

A unique piece of mixed classic/jazzy music which matches wonderfully in my collection. It is trully remarkable to discover the full classical music-education of these performers, which brings them to make this wonderful CD of high-standard music.

I found this CD after watching "Collateral". The music sounds very interesting when classic melodies blended with swing and jazz. But they sticked to the originial notes too much. I wish they could have created more variations and improvisation. Also, in this "Classic Meets Cuba" CD, the Cuba part needs to be emphasized more (putting them into a central stage in some tracks; the solo in the Fur Elise track is a good example) rather than treating the percussion beats as peripheral background. Taking the advantage of these vivid beats could further set the musicians free from the original notes. Overall, this is a good CD and is perfect for smooth jazz lover. Hope they can try harder and do more in their up-coming new release-Jazz Meets Cuba.

A Classical guitarist and collector of the genre, I can only rave about this cd. I purchased several of these cd's for my close friends and family. The two Paganini pieces are awsome.
Hopefully, Denon will produce more of the same. This time they supply the names of their artists. Well Done! Bravo!

This is definately not your grandfather's versions of Mozart. The artists change up the instrumentation and creatively put new life in such classics of "Elvira Madigan", "Ruhe Sanft" and "Eine Kleine Nachmusik". Good enough for a listen if you want to hear someting new.

i receive this cd form amazon.com, i love the first clip, the arranged for the music of Mozart are beautyful, very inspirational, nice version of very artist like Bela Fleck, his version of this sonata are magnificent, very original, and other way to hear mozart music, maintenance the essential of the music author, buy this Cd if you love the classic music, and the jazz music same, the fussion are excellent and for sleep moment is nice hear this album

Just when you think there is nothing more that can be done with Mozart, along comes this album. The interpretations are so fresh and different that I felt I was relearning Mozart. I think he would be very proud.

If you love Mozart, try this album. Interpreters such as Bela Fleck give us a chance to appreciate the enduring beauty of the music, and all of the selections are beautiful in their own way. Each of the pieces is too short for my taste, but that does allow for many different interpreters on the CD. I'll definitely buy the follow up to this album.

I have been listening to this CD for quite a while and I still like it. It never bores me. First, the transcriptions are done ingeniusly. Second, all the works are done by different musicians and thus the the play styles are all different. This is really QUITE A DIFFERENT More-zart. For example, Ruhe Sanft is an aria in 3/4, but it is beautifully transcribed in 4/4. At first listening, I didn't know what it was, but it sounded like I heard it before, and I couldn't figure it out. Only after I checked the song list and tried second careful listening, I was able to be aware that it was indeed "Ruhe Sanft mein holdes Leben". Every piece in this CD is beatiful. I am sorry that I can give only five stars. I will definitely give it 10 starts out of five. I wish there would be "A Different Mozart II".

You know I'm a hard core jazz fan and a jazz musicican. I like to know how many classical jazz clarinet players can play jazz let alone if they can play as good as Benny...? none.

How many Jazz musicians can play classical...? so many.

I bought this Cd only to show my students that jazz musicians are masters in their instruments...may be except the violin.

for Piano, listen to Art Tatum...I rest my case.

I have listened to these compositions many times from different classical performers and I like most of them. Yes BG sounds very different.... so what..? I aslo like classical music very much...but can't take the classical so called high arcy thrashing thier own music for the sake of being above ordinary...you classical peopole out there should learn somthing from jazz fans...be quite and listen to the music...

4 out of 5 stars Remembering Benny in classical music...........2004-10-26

I saw Benny Goodman play in person in 1967. The first half of the program was the Weber Clarinet Concerto (which he never recorded); the second half was the Goodman quartet and sextet with Teddy Wilson and Gene Krupa. I absolutely loved his warm yet penetrating tone, even more beautiful in person than it was on the old 78s. Then I heard this recording of the Mozart concerto on LP and was enchanted all over again.

Over the years, however, I have had arguments with clarinet students over the "correctness" or "aptness" of Benny's playing in classical. They hate his tone, call it either thin or woody (depending on how much they hate him), but I have heard many many "correct" clarinetists since and have always found their tones to be chilly and cold. I'm sorry, but I don't appreciate an icy-sounding clarinet tone. I'm too spoiled by Johnny Dodds, Jimmy Noone, Artie Shaw, Ed Hall and Benny to put up with that! (Just as no classical trombonist can compete with Tommy Dorsey, Britt Woodman, Lawrence Brown, Jack Teagarden or J.J. Johnson!)

I admit that Benny fluffs a few notes, especially in the first movement. Recording classical music was always nerve-wracking for Goodman: on the famous Toscanini performance of "Rhapsody in Blue," Benny the perfectionist cracks the top note, and playing with Charles Munch and the Boston Symphony was bound to be somewhat uncomfortable for him. But the bottom line is not "how technically perfect is Goodman?" but rather, "how does the music sound?" And to my ears the music sounds damn fine. I have a legitimate classical clarinetist, Robert Oppenheim, playing the quintet with the Budapest String Quartet on Columbia, and though I like that version very much it is only because the Budapest quartet is more "together" than the Boston Symphony Quartet heard here, not because Oppenheim plays that much better than Benny Goodman.

So stop griping and just enjoy it, for crying out loud!!!!!

Brilliant and slightly different: I think that the BG version is something Mozart would have approved of. Music is all about interpretation and as a musician I beleive that BG was the greatest ever all round clarinet player. This might not be technically perpect but hey, don't knock it 'till you've tried it. It is wonderful, if only limited by the recording technology available in the mid fifties. This is my favourite CD.

Simply put, I bought this CD because of Benny Goodman. Knowing his jazz artistry, I wanted to experience his classical works as well. While the performances were not awful, they were by no means perfect. Technical mistakes on Goodman's part are spotted several times throughout the concerto. However, the quintet is beautifully played. While this is not the definitive recording of the two pieces, I will have to admit that Goodman plays with quite a charming style. The orchestra and the string quartet were also quite capable and nicely balanced. I would recommend this CD to Goodman fans; it shows the less familiar side of Benny Goodman. However, students studying these pieces should consider recordings by different clarinetists (Robert Marcellus and David Shifrin come immediately to mind).

Collections like this are nice as an alternative to Ipod type collections, or multi-CD shuffling, achieving a nice balance and variety of compositions.

Here gathered around "romantic" classical theme, have the likes of Dvorak, Strauss, Mozart, Pachelbel, et al. Acclaimed performances by Denon Classical catalog performers such as Jean-Pierre Rampal, David Oistrakh, etc.

For two disc set of such superb quality at such a reasonable price, this is very much a play often collection.

I enjoyed but was disappointed by this CD- It highlights McFerrin's abilities as a conductor. I looked to this music to hear him as a vocalist. Do not let my disappointment detract from this excellent work.

I was first familiar with Bobby McFerrin as the "Don't Worry, Be Happy" guy, but he is also an extremely talented classical musician, both conducting the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and vocalizing some of the instrumental parts on this CD. Whether singing Faure, Vivaldi, Bach, or Tchaikovsky, McFerrin "becomes" a violin or cello, demonstrating his amazing vocal range and virtuosity. The pieces without his vocal addition are also a delight, due to McFerrin's skillful interpretation of these classics. I love this CD!

Nicely done. A great vocal performence by Bobby McFerrin (as usual,) but a choice of very basic "classics."
There's a lot of weight put on the music of Mozart, amongst which "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" is included. I think no one alive haven't heard it already, and I personaly think it's starting to taste like wood, no matter how good the orchestra is. The piece is 17.5 minutes long, and does not feature McFerrin's voice (nothing revolutionary.)
What made decide to purchase "Paper Music" was that I'd heard this version of Faure's "Pavane" - which here, with McFerrin's voice, is beautifully performed (almost reason alone to get the CD.)
After having heard this version of the piece and having read somewhere that a version of Stravinsky's Minuetto & Finale from "Pulcinella Suite" also is included I ordered the CD immediately...but McFerrin doesn't sing on the piece and it's not as satisfying, to me, as listening to the piece conducted by Stravinsky himself (or better yet - by Yoel Levi.)
There could be more pieces featuring vocals (only five tracks do,) because every time McFerrin sings here "something new is brought to old music" (in lack of a better way of putting it.)
Tchaikovsky's "Andante cantabile for cello and string orchestra," which closes the album, is another high-light that also features McFerrin's vocals.
Get this disc if you like well performed classical music.
I, myself, enjoy the modern classical music of Varèse and Stravinsky et al, where there are constant surprises (and "new" sounds by only an element such as unorthodox instrumentation.) I do not, however, regret having spent a few dollars on this CD - it is worth giving a leave of absence from the old dust collector every now and then.

Amazing...the result of his voice added to some of these scores is so gorgeous. He doesn't overdo it, so that it adds to the music without taking away from it. This is a positive review from a very conservative classical enthusiast who usually doesn't tolerate adding anything to the original score. One of my favorite CD's. I think many children who like to hum to music would also like this CD as an intro to classical music. His conducting of Mozart though wasn't to my taste, try Sir Neville Marriner and the Orchestra of St. Martin in the Fields.

I listen to artist such as Bootsy Collins, Jimi Hendrix, and Funkadelic. I never listened to classical or even considered it. I just happened to pick up this cd and give it a try. I remember Bobby McFerrin from "Don't Worry, Be Happy" and decided to buy this cd. Man! This cd has added another demension to music for me. I don't know much about classical music but thanks to this cd I plan on learning and listening to much more. This cd kind of has a jazzy essence to it. Its like McFerrin added some of his own jazzy grooves to the classical writings. Bobby McFerrin is a very talented musican, vocalist, and conductor.

Bobby McFerrin's signature falsetto envelops a poignant, wordless melody, embellished by piano flourishes that uncomfortably tow the line between classical decorum and Chick Corea's airy, modal jazz style. Suddenly the music segues into the opening of Mozart's D Minor Concerto. The A Major Concerto (K. 488) is similarly introduced. While the smooth, thick orchestral fabric suggests forces larger than a chamber aggregation, McFerrin clarifies important woodwind details (the elusive bassoon, for instance, in K. 488's slow movement) and infuses the outer movements with controlled brio. By contrast, Corea's Latin-tinged, improvised cadenzas (and overeager embellishments during solos and tuttis) lose their novelty over repeated hearings. Elsewhere, Corea's literal, dutiful phrasing smacks more of a talented student than a daring and vibrant pianist whose impact on jazz is unassailable. --Jed Distler

If you're looking for the cool piece from the old Audi commercial, it's the first part of the 466 -- Allegro. Apparently you have to buy the whole piece to get it on iTunes. Very pretty.

While I have been a dedicated listener of jazz for over thirty years, my classical ear is still taking shape. I do not always know all of the composers but I do know what sounds fresh and evocative. That Bobby McFerrin sings little and is instead the musical director of these Mozart interpretations only adds to the respect I have for his professional accomplishments. That Chick Corea deftly plays these sonatas with an obvious jazz influence does not betray some of the finest music ever written. Sample this music first. If you choose to buy it, I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have, even after my one hundredth listening.

Mozart with a jazz twist - here and there. Chick does a beautiful job playing Mozart. He definitely makes the music his own, and his jazzy cadenzas are remarkable! Add the McFerrin preludes and you have something quite unique, a beautiful blend of jazz and classical music. Very enjoyable.

I wanted McFerrin singing Mozart but I got almost pure Mozart instead. Bobby had to be the main dish not a tiny apetizer. It is classical music CD with negligible traces of Corea's and McFerrin's jazz. Very weird!

Corea in formal tuxedo revealed once more his huge talent in both performings, specially in the 23 th Concert.
You will be surprised when you listen this outstanding version.

This jazz trio is best at interpreting impressionist classics, i.e., "Jacques Loussier Trio Plays Satie", which I highly recommend. While some of the most beautiful and creative music issues from "musical hybrid", and this trio is the best of this genre, "Mozart Piano Concertos 20/23" falls short in some places. For example, the Jacques Loussier Trio's treatment of the Romance movement of Concerto No. 20 in D Minor truly annoys due to the trap set, loud brushes et al. This passage is perhaps the most "impressionistic" part of Mozart's concerto and yet the other musicians do their best to disrupt Loussier's majestic piano work that undulates like the surf unfolding on a beach. Of course, like the pros they are, this music is redeemed in the end but I can't help feeling the trio was a little out of their element with Mozart.

Some of Loussier's attemps in the near past have blatantly back-fired. Ironically, such is the case with his own compatriot composers. This attempt is a nice take on two beloved piano concertos by Mozart, which includes some swinging counterpoint with a string orchestra.
Even though time has shown that only Bach's music can successfuly withstand this kind of treatment, at least this CD is not as boring as previous installments.
During the 70's Loussier released an astute and bouncy take on Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No 5 (with orchestra also) on DECCA Phase 4. Would Polygram re-release it one day, please? It would be a great addition to those who discovered Loussier later on.

If you enjoy James Galway, you should get this CD. It is wonderful easy listening music for when you are doing something else like reading. It is not as exciting as some of his other CDs but just as good. All the songs are beautiful and will be greatly appreciated.
