Otis Blue has always been that rarest of beasts: a '60s soul album that could actually have been made as an album, rather than as a slapdash assortment of singles and fillers. The point being that there is no filler among these eleven classic Redding tracks that range from the crisp stomp of "Respect" and the Stones' "Satisfaction" to the touching pop of the Temps "My Girl" and Sam Cookes "Wonderful World"--not forgetting, of course, the heart-rending anguish of "Ole Man Trouble" and "I've Been Loving You Too Long." Otis Blue captures Redding at the very peak of his raw, unpolished powers, with the peerlessly punchy backing of Booker T. and the MGs. --Barney Hoskyns
Customer Reviews:
A curiously overrated album (in my opinion, anyway) from a great musician.......2007-07-26
There's no question about it: your soul colletion isn't complete without some Otis Redding in it. The man created more than his share of masterpieces, cranking out brilliant slabs of R&B by the pound. His voice was a (nearly) can't-fail mixture of grit and emotional resonance. He was also a charismatic performer and an excellent songwriter; his final single, "(Stittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay" is simply one of the most heart-breakingly beautiful songs of all time, a work of devestating genius that has, on multiple occasions, reduced me to tears.
Having said that, I simply can't reccomend this album as the soul masterpiece that other people seem to think it is. Granted, it has some fantastic moments- "Ole Man Trouble" is a superb midtempo ballad with some pleading vocals, slashing guitars, and a hypnotic rhythm. His version of "Rock Me Baby" drips with raw, salivating sexuality, and "Respect" (which would, of course, soon be covered by Aretha Frankin") is a rousing anthem with some pounding drums and a great horn line. Plus, Otis' voice is full of infectious passion. There's also a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" that transforms the song into a relentless, gritty R&B basher. Again, Redding delivers an incredibly exuberant vocal- just listen to those verses!
The problem with this album, however, is that there are far too many tracks here that are little more than filler. My biggest gripe is with Otis' version of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come." Now, the original was an absolute masterpiece, a soul-crushing heart-shredder that's every bit as powerful as "Dock Of The Bay." Otis' rendition isn't terrible, per se, but it robs the song of virtually all of its supernatural power. He remains faithful to its haunting, mournful melody, but sings without any of Cooke's emotional directness. He darts around the lyrics, adding little asides that ruin the focus of the song. He also tinkers with the lyrics, undermining Cooke's brilliant wording. The result is a castrated rendition of a masterpiece, one that strips the original of its cathartic power while contributing nothing new to it. Aside form that, there's an unexciting "Down In The Valley," and the overly sugary "I've Been Loving You Too Long" (sorry, I know it's supposed to be one of his best, but it just doesn't do anything for me). Also, his by-numbers take on "My Girl" isn't going to replace the Temptations' version.
The songs that I haven't already disussed are pretty good, but not exactly revelations: "Shake" has some inticing rhythms, but can't sustain its excitement all the way through, and "Wonderful World" similarly overstays its welcome. "You Don't Miss Your Water" fits the R&B archetype to a tee- which means that even though it's performed expertly, it feels like you've already heard the blasted thing a billion times before.
So, it's a pretty good album. I feel somewhat odd, seeing as how I appear to be the only person who doesn't absolutely adore it, but... eh, what're you gonna do?
Otis!.......2007-02-23
Tired of what passes for soul these days? Had enough of Destiny's Child, John Legend, etc.? Then let me tell you about Otis Redding. This is the man who penned Respect - yeah, so Aretha's version is definitive, but his ain't too shabby either. This also contains Otis' first big hit, the oft-covered I've Been Loving You Too Long, which has survived being butchered by the Rolling Stones - out of its many covers, it's best heard here. And speaking of the Stones, Otis' version of (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction is a surprisingly good reading of the just rock classic, especially considering it's a fine example of record company prostitution - the Rolling Stones had hit big with it a few months prior to this album's release. Otis' is funky, soulful, etc. And how about the bluesy Ole Man Trouble? Man, that song's a killer. "Don't want you, Ole Man Trouble, don't need you, Ole Man Trouble..." damn! Is that soul, or what? Two cool Sam Cooke covers (Shake and Wonderful World) round this classic album out. I enjoy every song (with the possible exception of a rather limp My Girl), and this is one of my favorite Soul LP's.
****3/4. One of the all-time classic soul records.......2006-07-28
I don't know if "Otis Blue" is the greatest 60s soul record ever released, as some have suggested, but I'm convinced it must be in the top-10.
"Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul" is a bit brief by today's standarts, and I do prefer the Stones' own version of "Satisfaction" to this one, but virtually every thing else is terrific. The arrangements are lean and uncluttered but suitably muscular, and Otis Redding was not the least of the many fine vocalists of soul's "golden age".
Redding is equally convincing on slow, gospel-like tunes like "A Change Is Gonna Come" and up-tempo soul stompers like "Respect", and he receives excellent backing by guitarist Steve Cropper and a tight four-man horn ensemble (two trumpets, two saxes).
Highlights include almost every song. A gritty, grinding "Down In The Valley", a rarely-compiled cover of Sam Cooke's "Wonderful World", the aching ballad "I've Been Loving You Too Long", and "Shake", a driving dance-friendly party tune. Whether or not the blues classic "Rock Me Baby" benefits from this arrangement depends on how you feel about blues to begin with, I guess, but Steve Cropper's playing is certainly very good.
Some of Otis Redding's best self-penned songs are here, like "Ole Man Trouble" and the aforementioned "Respect" and "I've Been Loving You Too Long", and while a good case can be made for the "Dock Of The Bay" being Redding's best original album, I think this one deserves a tie at least.
"Otis Blue" should not be missing from any self-respecting soul collection. Music collection, really.
It's got a beat and you can dance to it. Ot just sit there alternately swaying and bopping your head like a deranged pigeon.
Oddly overrated classic soul LP.......2006-05-23
This is probably Redding's most famous and acclaimed single LP; it's one of only two that Rhino keeps in print domestically at mid-price. (The other is the ubiquitous semi-compilation, DOCK OF THE BAY). Redding's incredible force of personality carries all of his LPs, and they're all quality entertainment, but most of them are erratic. OTIS BLUE is as uneven as any of them but contains a handful of seminal performances.
Side A is much stronger than side B, and contains all of the original material Redding brought to this session. As expected, the three originals are all outstanding. "I've Been Loving You Too Long" is a justly famous, dynamic torch ballad; "Ole Man Trouble" (repeated, perhaps to more poignant effect, on DOCK OF THE BAY) receives a cavernous arrangement, anchored to a dissonant Steve Cropper riff, with lyrics of overwhelming despair. And the version here of "Respect" is sleeker and punchier than Aretha's, although necessarily it lacks much feminist interest. I prefer it anyway.
There are also three Sam Cooke songs, which suggests that Redding might have had a fuller tribute in mind to the then-recently deceased legend. Otis improves on both "Shake" and "A Change is Gonna Come" - the latter is skeletal and gut-wrenching, the former gloriously raunchy. (Despite the album's title, Redding's concerns throughout the album are pretty earthy - a lusty blues showcases Cropper on both sides of the LP, although the performances aren't among Redding's most memorable.)
Side B features a take on "Wonderful World" that is more radical, but not nearly apt or successful as the late-Cooke pieces on Side A. There's also a perfunctory version of "My Girl" that, like the two blues, slows the album's momentum and leads me to wonder why this is usually classed as Redding's masterpiece when discs like THE IMMORTAL OTIS REDDING are just sitting there unnoticed. After an odd (but basically reverent) version of "Satisfaction", complete with fuzz guitar, Redding takes William Bell by the collar and shakes "You Don't Miss Your Water" free, cutting to the quick just as he did with "A Change Is Gonna Come". His rendering of the immortal soul ballad is as eccentric and indispensible as The Byrds'.
Either three-and-a-half or four stars. DOCK OF THE BAY, which is just as cheap and is, to a certain extent, cobbled together (side B extracts tunes from three previous Redding LPs and one Stax compilation) is probably a better starter.
Best soul album ever........2005-09-05
This is for me the best soul album ever.
All songs are beautiful, contains true soul arrangements without
frequent and disruptive background vocals.
Redding is in top form. His songs like Respect or I've Been Loving You Too Long are great and his covers like Satisfaction or Down in the walley too.
This is essential music for every soul fans.
Note: I have this album on mono.

The ninth career release from 2002 (the husband-wife team of Randy and Pamela Copus) is a sight-and-sound combo that includes a DVD gallery of splendid underwater photography (with the duo's music lending a dreamy, state-of-wonder audio backdrop) and a separate, music-only CD. The DVD, which slowly pans across dozens of colorful, otherworldly stills captured by unheralded photographer Susan Saibara, can provide some head-turning wallpaper for a computer screen or a wide-screen flat-panel monitor. The music, meanwhile, is a pleasant enough endeavor, though after a while it becomes apparent the duo has stirred an excess of stardust into these compositions. At their best, 2002 have used their soft, ethereal blend of electronics, acoustic guitar, flute, pennywhistle, and Pamela Copus's Enya-clone voicings to venture out (though never too far out) into the safer, gentler realms of the cosmos. On this disc, after an inviting opening track, several selections thereafter sound as though they have been touched by Tinkerbell's wand a few times too often, diminishing their stand-alone appeal. Pretty music, yes; but perhaps because it exists here principally to embellish many delicate visual images, it seems a bit too pretty on occasion. --Terry Wood

Imperative.......2007-06-06
This is the "whisky & cigs" period for Alex Chilton's vocals, a sound he abandoned as he aged (like Merlin he's going backward in time vocally...he'll die singing high register hillbilly bluegrass). Compare the vocals here to his post-Big Star "Bach's Bottom" work and his version of "Nobody's Fool" and few people would be able to identify him as the same singer.
The Stax "pop & soul" factory was in an odd passage of inspiration with The Box Tops, which it sadly had neither the management wherewithal, distribution, or vision to develop and refine. A pity, for the roots of something excellent are here, particularly in the established instantly recognizable hits this album collects.
Yet, following the slow arc of this pale firework, the fall to earth and implosion of Stax and The Box Tops gave birth the creativity and freedom that Chilton would latter profoundly offer in Big Star, his production of the Cramps, and his leadership as a low-fi and independent artist who has inspired and shaped basically anyone worth listening to since he started his musical career.
From Memphis With . . ........2006-09-12
You've heard "The Letter", of course, and "Cry Like A Baby". And you've probably heard "Soul Deep", perhaps without realizing it was the same guys (which it really wasn't, more about which in a second). There's even an outside chance you've heard "Sweet Cream Ladies, Forward March" (whom Sweet Cream Men adore, and who should "fabricate success for those who fail", if you catch the song's subtle drift). The Box Tops released four LPs and a slew of singles in their brief career and SOUL DEEP culls the highs and some lesser material for a very good overview. In other words, this is really all you need if you're interested. But it clocks in at only 50 minutes, which means one of two things: either the sponsoring label is being really chintzy, or The Box Tops just didn't have all that much really great material. Based on what I hear here, I suspect the latter. Even the four Chilton originals are somewhat less than impressive; keeping to form they sound pretty much de rigueur with the rest of the material and don't even begin to hint at what he'd do with Big Star (I imagine they Powers That Were made sure of that). Speaking of which - - The Box Tops were pretty much a fiction, at least in the studio. The "band" was actually just Chilton with house musicians. So who chose to cover Dylan's "I Shall Be Released" so lugubriously? It's the nadir of the collection and its inclusion bogs down the latter half - - particularly after highlights as high as "She Shot A Hole In My Soul" and "Sweet Cream Ladies", who should think what they're providing and whom Puritans ignore. Chilton didn't write that one, by the way.
soul deep.......2005-01-29
the best of the 60's group the box tops. a nice blend of soulful elements. if you like booker t. and the mg's ( green onions ) or early 70's staple singers ( i'll take you there and respect yourself ) then your sure to like this. the box tops were around from '67 - '69. the top 50 reviewer before, pd harris wrote, the only hits they had was the letter and cry like a baby, when in fact they had a couple more as well, 67's neon rainbow and '69's soul deep that did chart here in the states. a great collection by one of the great band's of the 60's. i give it 5 stars, so grab yourself a copy today.
Two classic songs.......2004-05-04
The Box tops are best remembered for The letter and (to a lesser extent) Cry like a baby but there is more to their music than those two classics. Their music is deceptively simple soul-pop. Their lead singer, Alex Chilton, was just 16 when they recorded The letter. He left the group, still only 19, and had some domestic success with Big star - a group that didn't chart in Britain.
The letter, their debut single, was an American number one hit and also made the UK top ten. Cry like a baby, their only other American top ten hit, was also their only other UK top twenty hit. They had eight other American hits of which Soul deep was the only one to chart in Britain. Of the others, I particularly like Neon rainbow. These four tracks are the most notable, though it is worth mentioning Sweet cream ladies forward march (in praise of prostitutes - surely they're not serious?) and You keep tightening up on me (not a hit but maybe it would have been had it come earlier in the career).
This is an interesting collection of their best music. If you enjoy sixties soul-pop, you may wish to add this to your collection.
The Box Tops provide some groovy, feel-good '60s pop........2003-01-31
One typical '60s music fan would think that a group like the Box Tops would put out a lot of good songs, many of which were minor hits, but I'm telling you, all of these songs make you feel terrific all over. From the short-lasting #1 song "The Letter", which was the band's trademark song and you can see why is because it is on every '60s music collection, to their 1970 single "You Keep Tightening Up On Me." "Neon Rainbow" is one song that will most likely stick in your head with is catchy lyrics and teh way the instruments are played and especially young Alex Chilton's rough, gravelly and one of the most famous voices of '60s music. I also enjoyed "Fields of Clover" with its psychadelic-sounding G-note on the organ at the beginning and the jumpy beat throughout. "Choo Choo Train" is one marvelous classic that will have you dancing within no time. "I Met Her In Church" is another great one that will have you shouting "Hallelujah!" soon. "Soul Deep", the title track of this album, is delightful and upbeat! Your '60s collection isn't complete without this great Box Tops compilation that provides a small sample of what the era was all about...from a great-sounding group that could have been around longer.

One can't help but feel both elated and sad when listening to this colossal overview of Richard Pryor's recorded work. Multiple sclerosis has silenced the greatest humorist of his generation, and that's tragic for Pryor. But it's also a heartbreaking loss for comedy, for, as these discs amply illustrate, the man who exploded the parameters of stage comedy in the '70s could have taken it in wild new directions. As it was, Pryor fleshed out Lenny Bruce's commitment to brutal honesty--and with a keener acting ability. This nine-CD set includes the comic's seven Warner Bros. LPs, plus a disc of previously unissued material and a rare 25-minute interview from 1983. Listening to the likes of 1974's That Nigger's Crazy and 1978's Live in Concert, it's obvious that while the man shaped comedy for decades to come, very few of those who've followed in his footsteps have anything near the talent, fearlessness, wisdom, or insight that Pryor possessed. Or the pain, for that matter. But as Pryor observed looking back at his peak years, "I was a drug-addicted, paranoid, frightened, lonely, sad, and frustrated comedian who had gotten too big for his britches." All those qualities come through loud and clear on these discs, but what he's left out is that, at the very same time, he was also very possibly the funniest man on the planet. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
Simply put, the MOTHERLODE!.......2006-11-08
Pryorites and fans of comedy, folklore, storytelling, whatever you want to call it, simply put, this CD set is worth it.
Aside from the material on EVOLUTION/REVOLUTION (containing much of the material recorded for Laff records and elsewhere), this is the complete above-ground recordings of Richard Franklin Lennox Thomas Pryor, and then some!
From the first Pryor Lp in 1968, we get the embyonic genius of PRISON PLAY (aka Black Ben The Blacksmith), and early classic on the theme of interracial sex during slavery in a play at a prison overseen by a racist warden-with Pryor voicing all the characters! TV PANEL SHOW is along similar lines, as our hero does all the voices of the said subject.
SUPERN(egro) aside, the other routines here are not so hot, but you get a good glimpse of what was to come.
On to THAT N(egro)'s CRAZY where our man does polished versions of the routines he had been doing for the past few years in LIVE & SMOKIN, WATTSTAX, and CRAPS AFTER HOURS regarding sex, the police, racism, etc. This is where he became a "ghetto superstar" on the verge of exploding into mainstream America.
IS IT SOMETHING I SAID (1975) is his best unified work (to me). Not only do we get the classic OUR TEXT FOR TODAY (his classic take on the ministry), we also get chapter 1 of the MUDBONE saga, Pryor's ingenius take on the old folklore-spouting tale-spinning wise black men once found on every street corner in America.
BICENTENNIAL N(egro) is largely forgotten today, but it shouldn't be. This is Pryor's magnum opus on being Black in America during the nation's 200th birthday. Like Brian Wilson's SMILE and Marvin Gaye's WHAT'S GOING ON, it should be heard in its entirety to be effective.
On to the live albums LIVE IN CONCERT, LIVE ON THE SUNSET STRIP, and HERE AND NOW. The first is considered a classic. Has its moments, but he's done things that I've liked better. In the second, he recounces the N-word which gets a standing-o from me and delivers part 2 of the MUDBONE saga. The latter is a lesser work, but he puts some racist hecklers in check, gets into a really cool improvised conversation with a fiddler crab that a fan puts onstage.
The previously unreleased bits are largely a treasure-BLACK MESSIAH and HISTORY LESSON are masterpieces that mix the profane and profound, with verbal nuclear bombs and breathtaking social observations that make you laugh and gasp at the same time. PATTY HEARST is a skewered but interesting take on the famous kidnapping (one of the few occasional bits that it would help to be a history buff or a 70s person to dig), but MS is a very sad piece, probably one of his last recordings, as he ruminates on the effects this disease has on him. It's not likely that you'll want to hear that one more than once.
Overall, this is an amazing collection well worth the price that works in both ways as laugh material you can bring your buddies over for beer and pizza for (as I did with a number of these albums during my college years)and something you can really meditate and think over. This set is the ultimate legacy that Richard Pryor left to the world. RIP.
HILARIOUS.......2006-11-06
Complete works of Richard Pryor.....what more needs to be said. The man was a genius. I had been casually searching for a definitive compilation, and when I saw this I had to get it. I was not disappointed.
Sets the Standard for Modern Stand-Up Comedy.......2006-11-02
Any fan of stand-up comedy should be ashamed if they don't already own this amazing box set by Richard Pryor. This wonderful box set is crammed with features--CDs that trace his stand-up career from his early days straight through his mega-stardom at his peak, and then to his struggles with MS (which if you think is maudlin, wait until you hear how he savages it in only the way that Richard Pryor could). A descriptive book loaded with pictures and historical info on Richard that gives you an even deeper appreciation for the man and his works!
Summing up--Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Bernie Mac, etc. all are great comedians--but once you hear Pryor, you know that he set the standard for all to come!
Greatness but now for the iPod issues with it.......2006-04-18
iTunes won't recognize the track #'s. Every album is broken down in alphabetical order. Kinda sucks to listen to a live show in some crazy broken order. It's cool though if you just pop them on at home but if you are getting them for your iPod, be prepared.
Worth Its Weight in Gold..........2005-10-22
This boxed set contains every album released by Richard Pryor on the Warner Brothers record label. Only one of these is currently in print, "Is It Something I Said?", which is a shame. However, the fact that all his work is finally available in one place is a blessing. Richard Pryor was more than just a stand up comic. I don't doubt that he was (and is) the greatest stand up comedian of all time and the funniest man on the planet, but there was so much more to him than that. The first time I heard the track "God" off the rarities disc in this collection, I was blown away. In it, Richard describes God returning to Earth and one by one asking to see Martin Luther King Jr., Bobby Kennedy, Emmett Till, and finally his Son, only to find out that each one had been killed. The message he delivers at the end was needed then as much as now: LOVE IS ALL WE'VE GOT. The delivery was so amazing that it left the crowd hushed and obviously taken aback...this STILL isn't standard fare at any comedy club I've ever been to. And then as only Richard could, he apologizes for getting serious on everybody and offers to tell a dirty joke. This collection is full of the humanity, wit, and wisdom of Richard Pryor, and nothing has ever made me laugh so hard. Thank you Richard, for rubbing some sunshine on my face!

Customer Reviews:
Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21
The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.
Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

Brilliant Band.......2007-04-27
I forst saw DBS at EdgeFest in 1995, Along with Adam Ant, Letters to Cleo, Veruca Salt, POL, and someother bands. I believe that the Toadies and Nixons were there, I may be getting them mixed with other bands. Anyways, They were clearly the best band on state that day. I also have seen in concert 3 other times and their performance can compete with any other concert that I have gone to. I can honestly say that I can listen to all of their albums without skipping over any songs. Being from Dallas and also working with Clay Bergus's Mother-In-Law, I may be Biased since they are from Denton.
They are a great band and I will be one of the first in line if they ever do some type of Reunion concert
P.S. There was a Special Release of "Home" that had extra songs. They did a version of "Dear Prudence" by the Beatles. The other one I cannot remember, but it was a great song
Always did like this group and album, One hit wonders of the 90's.......2006-12-09
Many people are mad because Breakfast at Tiffany's is different sounding than many of the other songs on this album, but I enjoy the whole thing, always have from the day I bought it back in 1995. It is unfortunate that the record company didn't push other songs as much as this breakfast at tiffany's, like Halo, or I can wait, but some bands historically have to become one hit wonders. Like Dexy's midnight runners from the eighties with Come' on Eileen, or Gloria Gainer with "I will survive" in the 70's, and even "the byrds" in the 60's with "turn turn". Yes one song is great, but be objective, as a music fan, this album is good, just give it a chance.
One fantastic song, but that's all.......2005-12-03
Three stars for the album, but it's really 5+ stars for "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and 1 star for the rest. To my ears, "Breakfast at Tiffany's" is a terrific song from start to finish (great writing, great singing/playing, great recording quality), while the rest of the album is complete "throwaway" or empty filler. The other songs aren't offensive, they are just boring (incredibly light & pointless acoustic stuff). The "other" songs on the CD don't even sound like they were recorded by the same band that did "Breakfast at Tiffany's". What a shame that the band couldn't give us something else at least remotely resembling that one song (on this album, I haven't heard their others), oh well. So if you buy this, don't have high expectations for the other songs, just figure you are getting it as an expensive single. Maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised by some of the other songs, but unfortunately I wasn't.
if you liked the B @ T's song..........2004-12-28
I noticed a lot of folks liked "Breakfast at Tiffany's", then some either liked the rest of it and some didn't. If you like that song (and it is kinda catchy), you are highly likely to like Pop Art, a band I really enjoyed in the mid-late eighties. There is a retrospective CD available, so it's not like you have to go a-hunting for old vinyl. When B@T came out, it was killing me how much it sounded like a Pop Art song. Thought I'd share that obscure gem with anyone who might be reading these reviews!
Read "Mobile Estates" review, change a few song titles........2004-12-10
Seriously...I never saw this coming, and I certainly don't know what to make of it, but I feel EXACTLY the same way about Home (especially Re. DBS) as Mobile Estates (especially Re. Citizen King). Compare and contrast:
* The breakthrough hit that's really easy to identify because it's completely unlike everything else they ever did.
* The general "life isn't the greatest, but we're making the most of it" mentality (a dependable alt-rock staple).
* Lots of seemingly thrown together lyrics that kinda make more sense after repeated listenings.
* A consistently vibrant but still fairly mellow beat; the tracks almost blend into each other.
Add it all up and...well, if you're a fan of alt-rock, you'll like it. Plain and simple.
(P.S. I was going to add You Can't Stop The Bum Rush, but even I think that's a little too much of a stretch. :-D)

A follow up to a classic...not bad........2007-06-11
No question, "Perfect Strangers" is a Deep Purple classic. "The House of Blue Light" was the follow up. Not all the songs are classic Purple, or even in the vein of "Perfect Strangers," but as a whole the album is pretty solid. For me, Bad Attitude, Strangeways, Mitzie Dupree, and Dead or Alive are the highlights of this album. Gillan's vocal work is, for the most part, excellent, especially on Mitzie Dupree. The Unwritten Law could have been a good song if the vocals weren't incredibly...stupid, for lack of a better word. The tensions between Gillan and Blackmore resulted in some pretty darn good guitar playing from Ritchie (Dead or Alive) and vocals from Ian trying to bridge the gap ("...why don't we call it a day before we call it a nightmare, darlin'?") or lashing out ("...you think I'm chained up, but I'm just tied down"). Overall, "The House of Blue Light" is a consistent, if sometimes unspectacular, album.
House with no blue.......2007-05-12
Great title but where is the blues ??? no likee....
This isn't your father's Deep Purple.......2007-03-15
I my humble opinion this was the best of the reunited Deep Purple. Perfect Strangers was a great album but the music was cut from the same cloth that much of the early Deep Purple and Rainbow for that matter. The thing that was great about the original Mark II two lineup was that from "In Rock" to "Fireball" to "Machine Head" to "Who Do We Think We Are" the sound and music on each of the albums was very different. There was growth and adventure in the development of each album. The House of Blue Light returned to an attempt to be creative. Granted these won't be the songs that will talk about forever or hardly at all twenty years later but they are great in their own rights. Songs like "The Spanish Archer", "Hard Lovin' Woman", "Strangeways", "The Unwritten Law", and "Dead or Alive" show a real stepping outside of the box with the style of the band. It was unfortunate that this album and tour were marred by the fighting within the band however as has always been the case with the band, the music is seemingly at it's best when there is tension from within. I have heard the album termed as an "experimental" album and I would have to agree and say that this was a successful experiment.
One and a half stars for Spanish Archer . . . ........2006-12-29
I'm not sure what DP was trying to be on this effort, but it didn't work. Maybe they weren't trying too hard to be anything at all, which would explain the insipid songwriting and mostly forgettable performances.
The opening two tracks, "Bad Attitude" and "Unwritten Law", are decent -- no memorable riffs or great performances, but listenable. "The Spanish Archer," featuring some interesting guitar work by RB, is far better than that. The rest are hardly worth mentioning. Songs like "Dead or Alive" and "Mad Dog" have plenty of energy but no life. (The blue lights are on but nobody's home?) Overall, these songs sound almost like each musician was recorded separately and the tracks were later mixed.
"Perfect Strangers," which preceded this, is one of Deep Purple's best albums, and "The Battle Rages On" is very good. As far as "The House of Blue Light" goes, get "Spanish Archer" for your IPOD and then close the door.
My favorite Deep Purple album.......2006-10-30
Talk about an underrated album, from an underrated legendary band.
When most famous groups reunite (like Cream or Pink Floyd) they do it for a one-off show, or a small reunion tour and then it's goodbye! But NOT Deep Purple, once they reunited it was stated: We are in it for the long haul. Boy, they weren't kidding!
This was the follow up to their famous reunion album "Perfect Strangers." I always found this album, "The House of Blue Light" to be even better. Of all the rock music I bought back in the 80's only a handful are still played in my house. This being one of them.
Ian Gillan has to be one of the most underrated lyricists in all of rock music. Next to Ozzy and Robert Plant, Gillan's lyrics are like Bob Dylan, or Dylan back in the 60's. Anyway, the rest of the band are brilliant as ever. For being an 80's sounding rock album it has held up much better than all the other hard rock outfits of that era.
Highlights: The Unwritten Law, Dead Or Alive, The Spanish Archer and Strangeways

Deep Blue by keiko Matsui.......2006-11-05
As with all the music that I have heard from Keiko - this is fantastic. She is a breath of fresh air in the 'smooth jazz' world! Love it!
Deep, dark, luscious jazz!.......2006-10-01
Keiko Matsui does it again, offering another album of stirring, sonorous, sumptuous piano jazz composed in her passionate, signature style. Tending more towards the light, modern, New Age end of the jazz spectrum, her music is nonetheless dense with mood, passion and stylish improvisations. Despite the fact that she is joined by only two other musicians--Derek Nakamoto on synthesizers and programming and husband Kazu Matsui on shakuhachi--"Deep Blue" retains that richly voiced, heavily layered quality that Keiko's compositions are known for, with Nakamoto's resonant synthesizers aptly filling in the ground as well as any bass or drum set might. Try Keiko Matsui's other releases as well--they're all great! And for more jazz/New Age fusion, you might enjoy "Dolphin Smiles" by Steve Kindler and Teja Bell too.
a few good songs.......2005-08-08
i'm not a fan of these kind of music. but "to the indian sea" totally got my attention
One of Keiko's best.......2004-03-14
I like this album. It is more to her core style represented best by her 'Dream Walk' album. I would definitely NOT label Mitsui's music as jazz or new age or anything, it is not. IMHO Mitsui has her own style all by herself. One very unique quality of hers is that I can listen to hers album repeatedly without getting bored or fatigue.
I do think a subwoofer or speakers with excellent low ends are required to bring out the full scale the her music.

Album Description
When artists are able to simultaneously marry the concepts of simple and complex, intellectual and spiritual, ancient and future; those are some of the best moments of all. This new recording by the Deep Blue Organ Trio captures that spirit, in the moment, in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Chicago's Green Mill, where the band has played weekly since April of 2003. Providing that connection to the soul and the spirit, of course, is the blues. This is sophisticated music with soul and thus a part of that great legacy that has given us everyone from Charlie Parker to John Coltrane to Ornette Coleman. We shouldn't forget that those three innovators (and so many more) were masters of the blues language, and that feeling permeated even their most advanced musical adventures. A true musical collective Deep Blue has managed to take the best from all of those worlds (and more) and fuse them together in one cohesive and satisfying group sound. Complete notes enclosed by Joe Moore, KFSR, Fresno, CA.

Pleasing to the ear.......2007-01-16
Nice selection of songs.Excellent guitar solos.
Some of the vamps are boring.Overall this is a nice
party pleaser
Deeply Blue.......2006-11-08
Oh no, not another live organ trio album!
Except this one is different. That's primarily because Chris Foreman on the B-3 is not your run of the mill organ pounder. He plays a tasteful, melodic groove, not the heavy-handed, all too familiar B-3 dirge you hear from so many of his contemporaries. Plus his bandmates follow suit, complementing him with controlled but swinging voicings. This includes guitarist Bobby Broom, who may not be your prototypical top tier guitar technician, but who plays within himself, lyrically and thoughfully, blending in nicely with his bandmates.
What emerges is a tight, melodic performance. The whole effort is enhanced by an appreciative audience that has the good taste to allow the band to do the "talking" and not compete with the grooves.
This is a very enjoyable outing before a very fortunate audience.
top of the line.......2006-10-26

First,,please read the below review by Samuel Cheli,,it is very insightful and on the mark.
I just wanna say that I love this record..to me the Deep Blue Organ Trio represents a mix of old and new...the best of both.
There are some moments on this record which I have played over and over again just trying to absorb all the feeling those guys are displaying thru their music... one of this moments is when Bobby Broom does his extremely soulful outo vamp improvisation on Once I loved...my gosh..it is wonderful... another is when Chris Foreman starts to groove on "12th of Never" and it feels so right even if it is a ballad.
This is dynamic soulful swnging bluesy funky music played by
dedicated groovemasters
Hey bro', it's not heavy. It's a B-3........2006-07-19
Although Philadelphia is the acknowledged capitol of jazz organ, Chicago South-siders with long memories will make a compelling case for the prominent role of the B-3 at some of the Windy City's most historic blowing sessions. There's no shortage of stories about Stitt and Ammons dueling at McKie's Show Lounge on Cottage Grove at 63rd Street in the company of some of the "baddest" players--Don Patterson, Eddie Buster, Jack McDuff, Leon Spencer, Odell Brown, Hank Marr, even the venerable Milt Buckner. Enter the new main Midwesterner on the instrument, Chris Foreman, a blind prodigy who for over twenty years has shared a telepathic connection with drummer Greg Rockingham, leader of Deep Blue, the organ trio that includes guitarist Bobby Broom, a transplanted New Yorker whose credits include gigs with Sonny Rollins and Miles Davis.
The music has moved to a club on the North Side, the Green Mill, where the crowd is youthful, white, and obviously studious in the attention it brings to the blues. And this is an ensemble that merits serious, attentive listening, practically redefining the sound of the conventional organ trio. Democracy rules, as Broom's lyrical guitar solos are spotlighted no less than Foreman's spirited keyboard virtuosity. The ensemble sound, moreover, stresses balance along with light and varied textures. Just as Broom eschews octaves and chords in his solos, favoring lean and economical single-note lines, Foreman avoids thick chords while minimizing draw-bar use, Leslie effects, and hackneyed Hammond devices like drone tones.
It's this attention to textures and dynamics that enables the group to do commendable justice by Gilbert's/Jobim's delicate "Once I Loved" as well as to give adequate breathing room to a clever tune with a Monkish melody--Broom's "No Hype Blues." At the same time, this is a single-minded unit that can cook, and turn up the flame at a moment's notice. On the aforementioned Broom blues, Foreman pulls out the stops and momentarily invokes the spirit of Wild Bill Davis at his most untamed, only to return to the subtle and subdued melodic line of the out chorus without requiring so much as a single beat to cool down.
Rockingham deserves the lion's share of the credit not only for making Foreman the man on the scene and assembling a mean yet gentle music machine but for his percussion mastery. I can recall drummers trying to "keep up" with Groove Holmes' torrid tempos or endeavoring mightily to "hold back" Jimmy Smith's accelerating pace. But perhaps not since Billy James has a B-3 drummer locked into and maintained a groove as tight yet relaxed as Rockingham's--even on a blistering up-tempo tune like "The Way You Look Tonight." Whether the guitarist is Broom or the equally talented Curtis Robinson or Henry Johnson, Rockingham's control of the proceedings insures an equally convincing result.
I'd go with a 5-star rating, but my salad Southside days spoiled me: memories of Stitt wiping the sweat from Patterson's face during a 40-minute Cherokee marathon jam, Joe D'Oriole's guitar firing off non-stop rounds of bullet-shaped notes, and finally Sonny apologizing for him to the crowd for looking white on the outside. I don't care what they say about the other good old days. Those were the "real" good old days.
