5 out of 5 stars Best Album I've bought in a while........2007-08-03

I but a lot of music, I've bought several albums before and after this one, but very rarely I find an album where I love EVERY song, and this is one of them. It is a must have for all rock and roll fans, if only for the excellent version of Skynyrd's "Simple Man", which I have never, ever heard done so well. Thumbs UP!

5 out of 5 stars Shinedown Shines Up and Down.......2007-07-26

Incredible talent- The best Version of "Simple Man" I've Ever heard! "45" is also a stand out. MUST HAVE!

4 out of 5 stars A Great Gift..........2007-07-26

I got this CD as a gift for my brother. He had heard the group before and really liked them. I recommend Amazon to find the older albums from this group.

4 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2007-07-16

A very good album with many memorable songs. I know I will be able to throw this cd in my player 10 years later and still enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible, a must have.......2007-07-03

A incredible CD. Its really refreshing to hear a new band actually produce something worthwhile to buy. "Leave a Whisper" demonstrates Shinedown's ability to mix up song styles and not deviate from a good niche. The bonus tracks are worth while to listen to as well.

My only complaint about this CD is that the "Enhanced CD" style often skips on my stereo in my Room. I'd wish they would have just delivered a straightforward, Audio only cd. This can be easily fixed though by just ripping the songs to your computer and then making a audio cd of just the songs.

That said, I highly recommend this CD and this band. Theres very few "filler" songs on here, and if you are half as happy as I am with this CD, then you'll be glad you forked over the 15 bucks or so for this album!

Album Description

Tom DeLonge knows how he'd like people to listen to We Don't Need to Whisper, the debut album from his new group, Angels and Airwaves. "I really want the room to be dark, with black light or a candle," he says. "People should have headphones on, and they should be really comfortable, maybe sitting on the floor, leaning against the bed. I spent a year and a half working on this record, trying my hardest to give people a moment of escapism. All I ask is 50 minutes of a lowered heart rate."

In just over a decade with Blink-182, DeLonge went from the San Diego suburbs to the top of the world. The band sold over 20 million records worldwide, won a wide assortment of MTV awards, and sold out arenas everywhere from London to Tokyo.

So in early 2005, with Blink-182 on a break, DeLonge came to a crossroads. Rather than do a solo album or another version of his well-reviewed side project, Box Car Racer, DeLonge decided to start a new band. He recruited Box Car Racer guitarist David Kennedy, bassist Ryan Sinn (formerly of the Distillers), and drum god Atom Willard (previously of Rocket from the Crypt and the Offspring). The quartet headed into the studio—where they would try anything to find a new sound or a new song.

The name Angels and Airwaves popped into DeLonge's head while he was driving. He wasn't certain about the name at first, but then he realized that "Angels and Airwaves" abbreviated as "AAA"—and that if he inverted the middle A, it spelled AVA, which is also the name of Tom's daughter.

"This is the next half of Tom DeLonge's life. If you liked anything that I did in the past, this is very much the next step."

"The magic of Blink-182 was that the three of us came together to create this amazing band," he says. "But now there's no holds barred. I get to be me completely with a new group of talented musicians. We are on a different intensity level with this record, and it's something that we can't wait to share with the rest of the world.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good...but,.......2007-07-29

This is a really good album there is no doubt about it. Great musicianship, recording, creativity and a wonderful atmospheric setting to the entire disc. Some songs are better than others but overall DeLonge really has something going for him here. I was excited for this album...and so was he and that's the problem I have. DeLonge himself hyped this album up way too much and my expectations, along with his, were way too high. Don't get me wrong it is really good, but I was expecting, perhaps unfairly, something amazing, which it isn't. He has managed to creat a distinct sound and there are some really good things about this band and album...I feel like I would have liked it more had it just come out like any other album. Tom just should have been more low-key about it. Oh well...still good

5 out of 5 stars most beautiful sound i've heard in YEARS.......2007-07-08

it's hard for me to describe how exciting Angels and Airwaves is for me... and i think that only someone who truly appreciates music (of this kind) will be able to relate... and i don't mean that in any condescending way...

it's not just the songs...it's the whole theme if you will... they have this mood creation approach... like Tom (lead singer) said, he imagined people listening to the album in its entirety in a dark room with a single lit candle or something...

the album focuses on a theme of the best and worst that we as humans can do... one is war and the other is love... and how ironically these can exist simultaneously worldwide... and not just in a violent world-war destructive type of way, but in a interpersonal relationship and emotional destruction sort of way... via society as a whole maybe... and how love can heal and span space and time.... also of worldwide and interpersonal magnitude.... Tom said the cover of the album is a picture to show the "infinite potential of a human being" .... "we don't need to whisper"....

anyways, what i'm getting at is that THEY'RE AMAZING! ok seriously though... maybe it's just me because i grew up listening to more focus-driven-progressive-minded music if you will... again, no condescending going on here... and what i mean to say is that you just don't get that sort of approach to things anymore.... and Angels and Airwaves is doing a fine job so far, i think! it's just beautiful... i can't describe in words the sounds, you know? you really do need to just sit in a dark room with a candle and listen to the whole album... but then you'd be missing out on all the cool WWII footage they incorporated into the film they made for the album! haha...

they certainly can't be compared to any other band out there today... they have a unique sound in the sense that they are drawing on a sound that spans decades now... it's almost just as if Tom took a little of the Cure, the Police, U2, and maybe even Pink Floyd and put them in a blender with his own little modern twist on it... the guitar work is in a word; beautiful...

enough of me drooling over this band, eh? i just wanted to end with a bit from an interview with Tom DeLonge himself , and, if you know me, you might catch the meaning at the end there... and the irony of my love for this band is that when i first got into them, i was in a very potentially stable and positive place (you know...), and i felt empowered to grow and just enjoy the positivity and infinite potential there... and then i went through some dark times and that particular stability left me faltered... i thought i could never feel the metaphoric light i felt when listening to this album again... but i did!! and that adds to the testament of positivity the album conveys... and to how humans don't give ourselves enough inner-strength-credit.... and i know i'm still in that dark place sometimes, but this album definitely inspires my daily life...

oh, did i mention that you should listen to it? haha...

4 out of 5 stars A good start . . ........2007-06-27

. . . for this band. Certainly better than the first effort from other artists who have attempted to start new band [ex. Richard Patrick and his new band, i.e. - what's left of Stone Temple Pilots] . . . this is the best U2 CD since "Zooropa".

5 out of 5 stars U2 and blink shake hands.......2007-05-27

I am not a Blink 182 fan. I can get down to a couple of songs, but thats about it.
Enough about them, this CD is really freaking good. It is very pleasing to the ears. Kind of spacey, yet still rock driven. Immediately noticed the delay on the guitar and incredible sound of the drums as the main staple to the music. I wouldn't go as far as to say that the lyrics are juevenille, but they are delicate. Lots of relationship/break up lyrics. I definately didnt expect this album to blow me away, but it did. Maybe your next? (jazz hands)

3 out of 5 stars Too Much Blink 182.......2007-05-15

The music and instrumentation was nice to listen to, but I couldn't get past the lyrics & the singer.

The lyrics seemed juvenile, and I really can't stand the "Blink 182" voice.

If you DON'T like Blink 182, then don't buy this album.

But if you ARE a fan of Blink 182, I would try this album out. It was a neat variation of music. It's nice to see that band members of big-market national acts are trying to branch out.

The debut of the young, classically trained international quintet of sopranos Jo Appleby and Tsakane Valentine, tenors David Habbin and Geoff Swell, and basso Nick Garret offers up a familiar take on the crossover formula that has enriched everyone from genre pioneers The Three Tenors to Russell Watson and beyond. While their occasionally electro-pumped rhythms and youth-angled marketing shtick ("The world's first opera band!") may borrow a page from Opera Babes and Bond, it still manages to evoke the spirit (if not the letter) of its eclectic classical sources. And if the world hasn't exactly been burning for yet another dramatized update of Turandot's melodic "Nessun Dorma," The Pearl Fishers, or--for that matter--"Unchained Melody," Amici Forever's takes on the pop side of the crossover equation are indeed promising, recasting Alex North's "Unchained.." ("Senza Catene") and their reworked theme to the miniseries Band of Brothers("Requiem for a Soldier") in a successful, neo-classical light. If Neopolitan-shaded originals like "Canto Alla Vita" and "Vita Mia" sound like Josh Groban clones, their glorious harmonic vocal reworkings of Faure's "Pavane" ("Whisper of Angels") and Elgar's "Enigma Variations" ("Nimrod: Lux Aeterna") bristle with an ambitious sense of adventure that's missing from much of their crossover competition. Serious opera buffs may still quarrel with the daring "impurity" of it all, but if Amici Forever prod a few more pimply punters to peruse Puccini, won't it all have been worth it? --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Definitive.......2007-07-27

Beautiful! Even friends who've never cared for opera love this one. A tonic at the end of a grueling day, a weekend afternoon introspective, a late-night lead-in to a flight of dreams ... a whisper of angels.

5 out of 5 stars great choice.......2007-01-11

this was a gift for family. family member loves album quality and selections.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant offering.......2007-01-10

Amici Forever is suberb in every way. Their arrangements are exceptional and the original lyrics are perfect poetry.

3 out of 5 stars Easy Listening.......2006-09-21

Bought the album after hearing someone talk about the group. Thought the voices were okay (baritone was the best) but in some songs didn't blend properly. Selection of pieces was interesting . . . pop, classical, opera. Good album for "background" music.

5 out of 5 stars Very Relaxing Music.......2006-09-11

I first heard it at a shop that sells English products. I thought it was interesting to hear and decided to get the CD for myself. I find the chorus very relaxing especially the last song which nearly put me to sleep as I am doing my homework. Amici Forever is a good CD to listen to when you have nothing to do or to soothe your wracked nerves.

1 out of 5 stars I'm not into it........2007-07-11

These guys are a big deal these days. Many people in the darkwave scene consider this to be their favorite band. Speaking for myself, I have no idea why anybody would be fannatical about this band. Thye are way too soft, way to pretentious, and way to poorly produced. IMO, The Cluckshadows are the modern day goth version of a Hairband, only to make it worse they added in a little of the Backstreet Boys into thier rediculous live show. If you want to listen to real goth band than may I suggest Christian Death, or Bauhuas. Or if you insist on something more modern, how about My Dying Bride. Whatever you do, don't bother with these posers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Re-release.......2006-12-22

This album has been out of print for a while--fantastic that it's finally been released again. With updated artwork and remastering, it's a great CD. As an added bonus, the very hard to find "Until the Voices Fade" remix disk is included! The album has a good variety of dance, ballad and techno tracks. Highly recommended to newcomers, and die-hard fans alike.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album Set by The CruxShadows.......2006-09-09

Mystery of the Whisper was one of the first Cruxshadows albums I heard (right after Telemetry of a Fallen Angel) and made me a devout Cruxshadows listener. My favorite song on this album is a slow song named "Monument", followed by the popular "Cruelty". Then there are also other personal favorites including "Regrets", "Heaven's Gaze" and "Insomnia"- and those are just from the first CD!

Until The Voices Fade is a CD mostly of remixes and features a cover of "Here Comes The Rain Again" from the Eurythmics. This album has a lot of variety and is a good introduction to The Cruxshadows for those that might be interested in their works.

5 out of 5 stars JUST PERFECTION!!.......2006-04-08

I have all of Dmitri's recordings and this is my favorite due to the quality of the songs, Dmitri's mastery of all of them and the really lush orchestrations. All of the songs are just gorgeous and his voice so beautiful that I listen to this all day at work on my portable CD player. I recently saw him in concert and purchased the DVD of the "War Songs" which were featured in the second half of his concert. Of course, I recommend the CD and the DVD as really stunning. However, if I could only listen to one of his CD's, this is my favorite. As a former singer who trained for 15 years, I can tell you that Dmitri's vocal technique is perfect, just perfect! The voice comes from heaven! Don't wait to get this one!

5 out of 5 stars Hvorostovsky...........again, magic.......2006-02-14

Moscow Nights - This collection is emotionally draining, sad; the minor keys, the great poets and composers, an era unexpressed to Americans. It is a revelation, tended by one of the most beautiful of Russian voices. Listen to it in pieces, in a quiet space, and ponder. Dmitri commands an opera stage - two visits to Queen of Spades at the Met- can lead to no other conclusion. However, it is his quiet recollections of Russian folk music, Russian sacred music, and Soviet music that arouses his greatest talents. This is a recording to be treasured.

5 out of 5 stars hvorostovsky does it again.......2005-05-01

This is the latest installment of the succesfull Hvorostosky/Orbelian collaboration. In "I met you my love" the spotlight was on the socalled Russian Romances, russian art songs of the 19e century. Then came " Where are you my brothers" a collection of Russian war songs. This title contains a collection of the best post war(50s&60s) songs. If you love melodious songs in minor key this is it.The selection is quiet varied and everybody will have his or her own favourites. For me there was'nt a redundant song. The singing is as always faultless and inspired, the Moscow Chamber Orchestra plays topnotch and the arrangments by Evgeny Stesyuk are as always beautifull. But be warned this cd can have a depressing effect because besides being beautifull this music is also mostly very moving. Buy if you love russian music and good musicianship you can't go wrong with this one.

4 out of 5 stars Favorite Bond Film.......2007-04-26

Music score was great. Paul McCartney and Wings. Movie well fitted for Roger Moore, a great candidate for this role.
The Solitaire melody is dreamy and romantic and often moody.
"Bond Goes to New York' is sharp yet out-witted. "Live and Let Die", a sacrament to testimony. Too good to pass up.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! The complete Live and Let Die Soundtrack.......2005-09-13

I have only been waiting for this for 22 years! Granted when this was first released on LP (Vinyl record technology, pre cd, pre cassette and during the horror period of 8 track tapes!),
Only so much music could be recorded on a record. This album finally satisfies all of us who wanted all of the music. Sir George Martin does a wonderful variation to the classic 007 theme as well as great action sequences with different variations of the main title and then some original songs. Sir Martin was the first to score for Bond since Barry who had scored all of the previous movies unavailable for this one. The music was a fabulous introduction to the new Bond Roger Moore.
This Album will stand the test of time when good music was being made for the series.

5 out of 5 stars Best Sound Track Ever.......2005-03-20

5 out of 5 stars Live and Let Delight.......2004-08-12

The remastered release of LIVE AND LET DIE is much improved. The previous issue was no different than the track line up on the original 1973 vinyl record -- or eight track tape, depending on your antiquated stereo. Not only does this release include additional superb tracks, some of the original cuts have also been lengthened and more closely correspond the the film soundtrack. George Martin, the Beatles producer, took the helm from John Barry in scoring the eighth James Bond film soundtrack. Though no one has yet equaled Barry's compositions for Bond films, which we have not heard since 1987's THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS, Martin's soundtrack was perfect for launching Roger Moore's first outing as Bond. Let us not forget Paul McCartney's brilliant theme of the same name.

The musical chemistry between McCartney and Martin is obvious as the title theme music is blended throughout the soundtrack. As a matter of trivia the movie producers originally planned to use McCartney's title theme with a female vocalist before the former Beatle showed his mettle as a negotiator. In the end, Paul McCartney and Wings performed the title track. LIVE AND LET DIE also proved to be a hit Apple/Capitol single as well.

There are a couple things missing from the CD. When some of the James Bond soundtracks were re-released a couple years ago they included selected soundbytes and an analog movie trailer. Apparently the remastered LIVE AND LET DIE soundtrack did not rate these extra features.

Oh well, Live and Let Die. In the meantime, live and go buy.

3 out of 5 stars Why weren't these tracks included in the first place?.......2003-04-16

Yes, that is my sentiment....in fact, it seems in all the other re-mastered Bond soundtracks, the best music is left out, and Live and Let Die was no exception.

George Martin took over from John Barry to write the score for Live and Let Die and he more than admirably did the job. First of all, (take note David Anrold), is that he incorporate the theme song into the score even though it wasn't written by him...thus continuing the tradition of Bond music set by John Barry. Second, he wrote another piece for Solitaire which is also used extensively throughout the score. In all, George Martin wrote a score worthy of Barry himself....

Which is what makes the original release such a disappointment because many of the best music was left out. The re-master remedied that and includes virtually the entire score: the music for the pre-title sequence (gun barrel/snakebit), other notables are Bond and Rosie, The Lovers, Bond to New York, and many of the cues for action/chase sequences. There is an alternate cue for San Monique which I think is better than the one on the original release.

But why the 3 stars rating?
We have to wait for Bond's 40th anniversary for the soundtrack's proper release, AND rebuy the soundtrack (I have it in cassette and CD and now the Re-master). Call me bitter, I think the people who runs the Bond empire should stop treating us fans so shabbily.

5 out of 5 stars Scream & Whisper-Edwin McCain.......2007-01-09

Excellent CD from Edwin. He is one of the under-rated musicians/songwriters of our time. This CD has some great tracks - my favorite is Shooting Stars.

5 out of 5 stars Not my favorite, but still awesome..........2006-03-30

Edwin McCain is a master. Most people only know him as "that guy who sings "I'll Be" on Dawson's Creek." But he is much much more then that, he is a skilled musician that I have been lucky enough to see live twice. This CD is definitely good, and while its not my favorite EMB CD, its much better then most of the mainstream junk today. I'm definitely surprised Edwin didn't have atleast a top 40 hit with "Say Anything" (for all you first time listeners and "I'll Be" lovers, it will probably be your favorite track). Also the song "Couldn't Love You More" is a really good song for anyone who has ever been in a relationship that pretty much everybody was skeptical of. My favorite song on the CD is the risky "White Crosses" which tells the story of a truck full of illegal immigrants from Mexico being killed in Texas. The song is extremely compassionate and its obvious that Edwin is way above writing meaningless songs.
If you're a hardcore Ed head, of course you're going to buy the CD and its definitely worth it.
For the non-Edwin fans, if your looking for "I'll Be", theres a really good acoustic version of it on the CD titled "Messenger" ;-)

5 out of 5 stars McCain Back with more unbelievable music.......2006-03-13

Screams & Wisphers is another great CD from Edwin McCain and his band. The song Couldnt love you more is a great song for lovers that have ever had doubters about there love, Edwin McCain is in my opinion one of the best singer song writers out, the way he makes you feel the songs and stories with his words is something only true artist can do. Not a big radio artist but that keeps him grounded and not caught up in the HOLLYWOOD sell out that so many of these so called artist give into - A great cd by a great artist and worth twice the price the sticker has on it, nothing Edwin McCain puts out is bad, if your a true fan of REAL music youll love anything Edwin McCain puts out

2 out of 5 stars I WAS EXPECTING A LOT BETTER THAN THIS!.......2005-10-11

To say this was a dissapointment is an understatement. By track three i wondering if this was the same Edwin McCain that had made the masterful 'misguided roses' because this is so BLAND! it really was a struggle to listen to the whole thing and keeo my eyes opened-radio friendly isn't the word! I guess some of the signs were showing in the tinsel and tap shoes dvd with the ultra slushy 'couldn't love you more' and 'shooting stars' what do you get as a bonus track a version of 'maggie may' so close to the original as not to make a difference! The whole point of a cover is to do your own interpetation not a note for note re-run! So what has happened in the past years to make someone as talented as McCain heap this non-entity on his fans? Well giving Pete Riley a stab at songwriting both on his own and with McCain shows a possible drying up of ideas, because Riley's songs wouldn't be out of place on a latter day Fleetwood Mac album- they are that uninspired and there is hardly any barintone sax which always added to the songs and do i hear the dreaded drum machine in the mix? Come on Edwin a couple of half way decent songs on your new album is pushing the mark a bit. I for one will view the next album with a great deal of aprehension!

5 out of 5 stars Say Anything.......2005-07-08

I first heard Edwin play 'Say Anything' when I saw him at BB King's in NYC. A couple of months later, you could sample it on his website. I purchased the cd the day it was released. A few months later, that was the song that my husband and I danced to on our wedding night. It's a beautiful song, with intelligent lyrics. Every one of my guests were so intrigued by it, because they had never heard it before. I was proud to play it, because it caught everyone's attention, it was beautiful and perfect for my husband and I, and I wasn't cheesing everyone out by dancing to some bubblegum love song. I've been and Ed Head for 8 years now! And it is amazing songs like this that keep me coming back for more!

Whisper to the Wild Water is a sweet sonic journey of liquid swirling arrangements and the frothy mellifluous wash of Máire Brennan's looping vocals. Here the singer for her family band, Clannad (and elder sister to the better-known Enya), ventures farther astream from her previous solo efforts to incorporate more flutes, pipes, and Celtic traditional touches amid her penchant for spiritual themes and the light world rhythms of drum loops. Ever mindful of familial strength, Brennan collaborated on the writing of this collection with her husband, duets with her mother on one cut, and features her 5-year-old son intoning the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi in Gaelic. Singing in both English and the tongue of her native County Donegal, Brennan creates a work that, while not overtly Christian, is gently uplifting and attuned to the healing properties of song. Like a cradle rocked by the sea's lulling tide, Whisper to the Wild Water soothes, pacifies, and guides the listener to a delicious place of well being. --Paige La Grone

4 out of 5 stars Etheral Journey.......2007-03-05

This album is a bit more of a depature for Maire. There is less traditional style elements, and more 'modern Celtic new age' themes.
Continues with the religious themes brought up in 'Perect Time' this does push more toward Enya's style.

The copy I acquired was printed in Japan so I got a bonus track only available on that copy.

As always she has such a style in mixing Gaelic and english lyrics.

This goes beyond the typical Clannad albums and is truely more etheral and surreal. Wonderful mood music.

3 out of 5 stars Perfect Time Part II...but with a different style.......2006-10-25

In trying to put my finger on what makes Whisper different from Perfect Time, I guess you could say is that it has a different style. It's still Moya but from a different musical perspective. Good music, always beautiful voice, but just not as magical to me as was Perfect Time.

My favorite song is Be Thou My Vision. This is 95% Moya's voice and a little background music but oh how beautiful this song is! This song puts you in a different place and takes your breath away. My only hit on this song is that it is way too short! Moya sings Gaelic so beautifully that I think your soul just sings along with her and fills your heart with joy.

Other favorites include Peacemaker and In God's Presence. Peacemaker features a child speaking in Gaelic and Moya filling in musically between spoken verses--a different kind of song altogether and your can feel the passion of the guitar playing along with Moya's voice. In God's Presence is a choir song with Moya singing along with a church choir. Like Song of David in Perfect Time, this song moves my soul.

Don't be put off by Moya's Christian influence here. This is music anyone can listen to. The only thing you will feel is uplifted and satisfied at hearing good collection of songs by Moya.

3 out of 5 stars Lost On The Moors ~ Contemporary Isn't Necessarily Better.......2006-03-16

I hate to say it but Maire Brennan's 'Whisper to the Wild Water' is the least favorite CD to be found amongst my Clannad, Enya, Maire collection. Yes her voice is beautiful as always but it seems somewhat lost and out of place in the techno-pop music that dominates this -13 track- CD. Those tracks that do manage to stay away from the contemporary beat fair a little better but still not up to past performances and material.

If you want just one or maybe two Maire CD's in your collection this is not the one to get.

5 out of 5 stars Maire's (or Moya's) Crowning Jewel!.......2005-10-20

Alright. This to me is the cd where Maire Brennan has found her own unique place in the music world. This cd has all the elements of "Perfect Time" (her previous release) but done even better and has the added touch of a few more upbeat numbers that are very special and memorable. No filler at all on this one! It's very solid and just as soothing as her previous cd but there's definite growth to be found here.

There's no denying that her younger sister Enya is a very tough act to follow, but I must say that this cd finds Maire equal to Enya in her own way finally! I won't point out each song to you as that's kind of what the samples are for, but each and every song on here is great and a few are exceptionally great!

This is a journey you can lose yourself in. A Must buy for ANY Enya fan!

5 out of 5 stars Peaceful and Soothing.......2004-03-10

This CD is one of my favorite CDs by one of my favorite artists. With all of it's soft, peaceful melodies, I played this constantly while I was pregnant, and after my baby was born, one of my favorite cuts, "Ageless Messengers," seemed to sooth her and calm her very quickly. It's spiritual, Christian message seem to speak to everyone, regardless of your faith or beliefs. Listening to this CD always seemed to help me slow down, reflect and appreciate what is really important in this life. The music has a sense of peace.

Listening to the high-energy, florid runs, quirky twists, and trademark whines that tattoo "Bouncin' with Bud," the opening track of Whisper Not, it's hard to believe that Keith Jarrett was still in the throes of chronic fatigue syndrome when his trio recorded this date in Paris in July 1999. This isn't the Keith Jarrett of moody ruminations we heard on his solo CD The Melody at Night, with You, released in the fall of 1999. Whisper Not is closer to the Jarrett who launched the Standards Trio with drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist Gary Peacock in 1983. The trio is still mining the songs of their youth, resurrecting "Poinciana," a signature song of Ahmad Jamal, an early Jarrett influence, and paying tribute to the bop masters with a rollicking take on Dizzy Gillespie's "Groovin' High" and a sophisticated excursion into Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight." The interplay between these three musicians has never been higher, operating at a level beyond intuition, playing inside each other's heads. --John Diliberto

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Prime Cuts!.......2007-05-20

Paying tribute to a host of great pianist influences, Jarrett performs over a dozen pieces that are either written by or associated with such jazz titans as Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, George Shearing, Ahmed Jamal, and even an Earl "Fatha" Hines tinged intro to Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams.

Keith stays on the mark throughout, with the possible exception of Round Midnight sounding a bit overly intellectual and emotionally detached. That being said, the majority of the selections sparkle with his lively and often inspired approach to time-honored classics. Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette consistently provide their usual reliable support.

For those who prefer Jarrett's straight ahead approach over his more modal meanderings, it doesn't get any better than these two live cookin' sets recorded in Paris, 1999.

5 out of 5 stars Joyful.......2007-05-06

Why do ECM keep releasing Standards Trio albums? I can't afford to buy them all, its just not fair.

This is another absolutely blinding (double) CD. The track that caught my attention immediately was "What is thing called love". I don't how many versions of this tune I have by Jazz musicians but it must be dozens. Well heres another way of playing the song. A great solo Piano intro and then Keith just flys into the tune with stream of brilliant inventions.

The rest of the album maintains an equally high standard. A swinging version of "Bouncing with Bud" and a beautiful version of "Chelsea Bridge" are highlights from disc 1. Having said that I love the version of "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams" on disc 1 where Keith harks back to pre-bop era with a version that in its solo Piano intro is almost stride and continues that feel even if there isn't the ooom-pah left-hand all the time.

The total playing time is 1 hour 53 mins over the 2 discs. I've never heard a bad 'Standards Trio' album, but this is one of the very best.

5 out of 5 stars This album is fantastic.......2007-03-07

A Keith Jarrett "must have" in my humble opinion. Similar to Jarrett's recordings at the Blue Note, but a little more refined... which is not to say it's better or worse. The Blue Note recordings have more flare but this cd has more style. All the tracks are fantastic, but my absolute favorites are:

Bouncin' With Bud, Whisper Not, Groovin' High, Chelsea Bridge (haunting melody!), What Is This Thing Called Love, and Poinciana (my #1 favorite).

The recording of "When I Fall In Love" on this album is not as good as the one on the Blue Note recordings (incredible recording, how could you top it?). Of course we're not free from Jarrett's grunts, but that's not a big deal anyway :P Altogether fantastic album.

4 out of 5 stars Live and alive and swinging.......2004-09-05

Mr Jarrett is such a master, as are the bassist and drummer, that the regular listener has to put in context this offering, recorded live in Paris. How do we rate it against the magisterial LIVE AT THE BLUE NOTE? That said, this is a wonderful example of the joy the trio has at making music and seems to me to be a tribute to the greats of the piano, such as Ahmad Jamal, Billy Strayhorn, Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Art Tatum, George Shearing. I was like others especially struck by the beautiful rendition of POINCIANA which Mr Jamal I'm sure would have enjoyed.
A special record for piano music lovers. Not to be missed.

4 out of 5 stars EMC Records and sound quality.......2004-06-30

The music is wonderful but the recording quality is extremely poor(which is usually the case with EMC CD's).

I am a huge fan of this group. I love all things that sound arabic or persian, and this is a great take on traditional music from Egyptian bellydance. The music sounds very authentic, and I was first introduced to it in a bellydance class, and again later by a good frined who teaches world drumming. It is versatile for upbeat or calm occasions and is fun to mix with. I lost my original copy, so I am buying it again! If you love Omar Faruk Tekbilek or Hossam Rammsy, this is a must have.
