A MUST HAVE.........5 STARS - BEAUTIFUL MUSIC.......2006-06-28
TERRA or TINA is just enough to buy the cd. Actually, I started playing the piano for 3 reasons:
-Terra (piano version)(INCLUDED IN THE CD) --- Final Fantasy VI
-To Zanarkand --- Final Fantasy X
-Greensleeves --- Xenosaga Episode I, OST
If you listen to them you will end up taking piano lessons like me...give them a try.
Midi in the flesh........2005-10-12
The piano collections of Nobuo Uematsu's series of Final Fantasy scores have proven to be just what the doctor ordered, considering that he was creating such spectacular music for such a "lowly" medium as the 'video game' before there was even a moderate respect for the art. Better yet, there was a far less than moderate respect for 'scores' to video games at the time. Considering the severely limited sound capabilities of the Super Nintendo, Uematsu's masterful compositions were not given their proper representation with what the current technology had to offer. But, even with such restrictions, Uematsu's music was no less than engaging. It makes perfect sense that his music should finally be played acoustically to help the other half realize the significance of his work, to spell it out for them. And, this collection is no exception.
Final Fantasy VI still stands out as the greatest of the series, and Uematsu's score is perhaps his most profound. With all of these collections, one who has heard the original scores cannot help but think that some of the pieces have been belatedly embellished to the point that they digress from their original forms, and therefore the original score, but the ones that remain faithful are well worth the time and/or purchase. "The Mystic Forest" and "Coin Song" are what appeal to me the most. The both of these titles are more beautiful and haunting to me as I'd realized they had the potential to be. Just gorgeous. "Celes", "Mystery Train", and "Waltz de Chocobo" are also well worth mentioning. If you are already familiar with this or any of Uematsu's other Final Fantasy scores (as I am), you are already prejudiced towards this release, and so forth. If you are new to his music, I can comfortably recommend that you know of this man. Who knows? You may have have been missing something.
Good, but not Uematsu's best.......2005-08-23
Spinach Rag is probably one of the very best piano peices Uematsu has written. That song alone is worth the purchase of this CD.
The problem though is that there are a number of other songs on this CD that really aren't very good at all, like Stragus & Johnny C Bad. Cefca (or Kefka as was the translation in America) OST (original Sound Track) was probably my favorite song of the Final Fantasy series, but this piano version, like the Orchestral Version on Grand Finale was just a letdown and did no justice to how great the song really could be.
On the other hand, Gau, Spinach Rag, and Kids Run Through the City Corner, more than make up for the CD's shortcomings, and on the whole the album is pretty good. Coin Song is nice, if simple and slow. Same goes for Tina. Celes is a pretty darned good song, but if you really want a good version of this song the piano version is not the one to focus on. Listen to the 23 minute Dream Oath Opera, and focus on Aria Di Mezzo Caratere (or however that's spelled) song within that Opera. There is a slightly remixed version of that song on the Grand Finale CD that I would highly recommend over this version of the song.
All in all, if you love the work of Uematsu, like listening to simple, but pretty piano songs, or are a fan of Final Fantasy this is a CD that is actually worth the money to buy. But perhaps you should pick up Grand Finale, Celtic Moon, FITHOS LUSEC WICOS VINOSEC, Final Fantasy 7's or 9's piano soundtracks, or Uematsu's Symphonic Suite first, as all are much more impressive works than this selection.
WOW is all!.......2004-06-25
Like I said WOW this ff piano collection is probably my favorite of all time and the game too! If you've played the game you will be astonished at the closeness the piano pieces have to the original sound from the snes. Every piece in the album is excellent! This one is defintely a keeper!
Five stars just isn't enough.......2002-07-16
Truly impressive. There isn't enough time of day to describe the beauty behind this soundtrack. Though the game Final Fantasy VI is almost a decade old now, its music is still some of the most powerful compositions I've heard... EVER. And yet it goes so unnoticed because it's music made for a video game. Luckily, this CD captures the essence of 13 of the game's better songs in grand piano style. This range covers so many emotions to a tee; evil and devious, mysterious and foreboding, bright and cheery, calm and peaceful, and slow and melancholy. It sends cold chills down my back whenever I listen to them, and any music that can do that is worth knowing. If you're into piano music, listen to this CD! And if you're a video game music fanatic, listen to this CD! Of course, that high price is a little intimidating. Hope you can somehow work around that.

Album Description
"Jennifer Koh is a risk-taking, high-octane player of the kind who grabs the listener by the ears and refuses to let go. Unlike so many players of this temperament, however, she supports her mesmerizing flights of fancy with a beguilingly silvery tone, fabulous technique and dead center intonation." -- The Strad
Born in Chicago, Jennifer Koh studied at Oberlin College and the Curtis Institute. She currently resides in New York City. A prolific recitalist, she appears frequently at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Spoleto Festival, and other prestigious venues. She has also appeared with major orchestras throughout the world. As a virtuoso whose natural flair is combined with a probing intellectual acuity, Koh is committed to exploring connections between the pieces she plays, searching for similarities of voice between different composers as well as within the works of a single composer. In her own words: "Playing and recording the Schumann Sonatas is one of my most personal projects to date ... Schumann's music is the most human, with its viscerally haunting, obsessive, tender, and vulnerable extremes ... A single phrase is like a poignant memory that returns, and with each visit is reborn more vividly, more passionately, more tenderly than before."

The Bottom Line
When classical performers come together to make music, the quality of their performance is effected by many variables. When they aren't connected, their timing, phrasing, tempo, pitch, and tone can quickly deteriorate - turning a great piece of music into a great piece of trash. However, when they are connected, much like the aligning of the planets, wonderful and spectacular things happen. A great piece of music becomes more than notes on a page - it's music so moving, so riveting, you can feel it in your soul. Jennifer Koh and Reiko Uchida have done just that.

A Classic CD of Contemporary Koto Music.......2006-06-09
Well, the folks at Celestial Harmonies have done it again. Having already treated us to "The Art of the Koto" in three volumes, now they bring us this interesting, unique, and overall very nice CD of koto music. The performance is top-notch, the music is beautiful, and the crystal-clear sound quality brings these traits out to the full.
The focus of this CD is on contemporary koto music, making it somewhat similar to "The Art of the Koto (Volume 3)" in some ways, though it is not exclusively concerned with the 21-string koto as that CD is. Still, the 21-stringer shows up here along with the good old 13-string standard, which makes for a pleasant variety of sound. Track 1 is an old classic from the 1600's, but it is a favorite of the contemporary repertoire and so is included here (it also serves to give some context to the rest of the album). All the other tracks range in time from 1969 to as late as 1999. Matsumura Teizo's piece on track 2 manages to capture the feel of classical koto music in a way that is fresh rather then repetitive, while Miki Minoru's two compositions (Tracks 3 & 4) highlight his versatility and innovative flair--the incorporation of Javanese Gamelan music in "Higashi Kara" is especially striking. Finally, the subtle wistfulness of Sato Yoko's "Ame no Uta" (track 5) is incredibly moving; we can rest assured that the future of koto music is in good hands.
As with the other CDs by this company, the liner notes leave nothing to be desired. The context of the music featured on the disc and the development of different koto models in the twentieth century are aptly explained, and each track is discussed in detail suitable both to the casual listener and the music expert--including a brief description of the composer. Finally, a full bio on the careers of the two performers (mainly Kimura Reiko on koto but also Tajima Tadashi on shakuhachi flute for the second track) rounds it out. Heck, even the artwork on the cover gets a quick paragraph. All of this is a fine testament to the seriousness with which this product has been put together.
Unlike the "Art of the Koto (Volume 3)" which is a bit more esoteric, this CD stands alone fine and is a great sample of contemporary koto music. I can highly recommend it both to the long time koto-connoisseur and to the first-time listener.
First class playing.......2001-08-01
An excellently produced and presented recording of pieces from the classical to modern repertoire. Whoever put in the data for the names of pieces given above has played a nasty joke on the performer, since the fourth piece should be 'From the East,' not 'From the Easter Parade.' Doesn't anyone check these things?

A gorgeous masterpiece; my favorite CD all year!.......2005-11-29
Emily Van Evera is the Penelope Rich of the 21st century... beautiful, brilliantly gifted, and a scrupulous steward of those gifts. Her voice is pure magic, passionate and fiercely intelligent, both elegant and sensual. She is more than musician - she's a complete actress, portraying the meaning embedded in each word. Her voice is consistently masterful, precise, like a bell ringing in a cathedral. The way she nails each pitch, and inhabits it, and sustains... and sustains... is delicious.
The arrangements for this recording are impeccable. Even the running order seems perfectly organic. The scholarship behind the entire project is thorougly engaging, a gripping story artfully told. Van Evera's liner notes describe each piece with meticulous eloquence. The material traverses a wide variety of moods from the playful "Pretty Woods" to the sexy "In Fields Abroad" to a lullaby so tender and gentle it is almost whispered. I can't pick a favorite track: right now it's a three-way tie between "Deceitful Fancy", "The Thrush", and "Sweet Stay Awhile". Whatever she is singing, Van Evera's voice is always lush, haunting, thrilling.

Customer Reviews:
Francois Couperin on Naxos.......2006-04-12
This budget-priced recording of harpsichord music by the seventeenth century French composer Francois Couperin (1668 -- 1733) is an outstanding introduction to some little-known music of the French baroque. The performance by harpsichordist Lawrence Cummings, recorded in 1994, has received great critical acclaim. I am pleased that the CD is still getting attention with two recent and justly enthusiastic reviews on this site.
Francois Couperin's harpsichord music departs from that of his predecessors in several ways. While earlier French composers wrote primarily dance pieces, Couperin shifted the focus to short character or genre pieces depicting a specific person, scene or emotion. In addition, the music of earlier French composers for the harpsichord was highly improvisatory, in a form called style brise, derived from music for the lute. It frequently does not use bar lines, relying on the imagination and improvisatory skill of the performer. Francois Couperin changed that by writing out his scores in great detail and in insisting upon a faithful, exact performance of what he wrote.
The eminent scholar of the French baroque period, James Anthony, has aptly described Couperin's harpsichord music as "so elusive, yet so compelling." He wrote:
"[I]n the company of some of Chopin's Mazurkas and Debussy's Preludes, much of Couperin's keyboard music is more a communication between instrument and performer in the intimacy of his music-room than it is between performer on the stage and an unseen audience. It reveals itself only gradually and only after repeated playings. It is wed to its instrument as is no other music."
Couperin's extensive output for the harpsichord is gathered into four large books each of which is subdivided into a section called an "ordre". On this CD, Cummings performs the first ordre of Book One, composed in 1713, consisting of 18 pieces.
The first five pieces are in traditional dance form, but even here Couperin imparts a special character to his miniatures. Thus, the opening Allemande is meant as a portrayal of and high compliment to the Duke of Maine, while the sarabande(no 4), titled "la Magisteuse" is a portrait of Louis XIV in his glory.
The remaining works in the first ordre are all character pieces, many of which derive from vocal music. Some of them are humorous as in "Les Nonetes" portraying a pair of none-too-chaste nuns and "La Bourbonaise", a portrayal of a highly flirtatous and independent woman. Other pieces, such as "Les Sentiments" are highly reflective and melancholy while still others such as "L'Enchantress", "La Pastorale", and "Les Plasirs de Saint Germain en Laye" have the grace and ease of a painting by Watteau. There is much to enjoy here.
The CD concludes with the first and second concerts from Couperin's series "Concerts Royaux". Couperin composed these works for performances at Louis XIV's Sunday musical soirees. They are scored for performance by solo harpsichord or by ensembles. They are performed by Cummings here, with viol and viola da gamba, respectively, added to the final work of each set. These two concert suites return to the use of traditional dance forms. But they are notable because they show Couperin absorbing the style of the Italian baroque into his work. In particular, the second concert includes an "Allemande fugate" and an "air contrefuge" which adopt a fugal style of writing derived from Corelli, a great favorite of Francois Couperin.
This CD will appeal to lovers of the harpsichord and to those listeners who want to explore the beauties of early music.
The quotations in this review are taken from Jamer R. Anthony, "French Baroque Music" revised edition p. 259.

No more to be desired if only enjoyment is first concern.......2005-09-26
Couperin might have not require too much from his audience.when too many scholarly
expectations from the music aspire you F Couperin could hardly be your favourite. the inscribed movements with names of specific charactors must be intented to
not only inspire the players but audience as well.and the first 2 couantes give the whole program an excellent kick off: full of
nuance, exquisite note touching... which are of quintessence of this kind of baroque charactor pieces.compared to many rigid
pale scholarly distorting renditions.it is truly among my best choices.
Grrr..........2004-02-05
Sorry, I don't really have a whole lot to say about this recording, but the reviewer below's one star was really bugging me. This is a great selection of Couperin's whimsical harpsichord music, delightfully played and thoroughly enjoyable. And about Naxos, it is the only label out there today pursuing a systemic and affordable approach to the recording of classical music and offers home listeners and collectors a chance to listen to beautiful works of music that would never be available from major record labels like Deutsche Grammophon.
Naxos strikes again.......1999-05-08
Well-intentioned but remarkably stiff and unsubtle performance. Mr. Cummings seems uncomfortable and unfamiliar in this territory. Naxos does not serve music-lovers fairly with this type of recording.

Customer Reviews:
Piano Concerto for the Left Hand and Orchestra.......2006-01-05
American composer Ned Rorem composed
his Piano Concerto for the left hand
in 1991;written for and dedicated to
the great American pianist Gary Graffman
who since 1980 does not plays professionally
with his right hand. The work is more of a
suite than a concerto, it was written in
three sections that break into eight short
movements. This concerto is a great
addition to an already depleted literature
of the left hand alone. The other piece
in this recording is a piece with a somwhat
missleading tittle:"Eleven Studies for Eleven players"
NOT eleven instruments, the players actually
play one or more instruments...I really like
the music of Rorem, this is a great intro
to his compositional style and technique.
I highly recommend this recording.
