5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2002-05-11

This was the 1st Jarre CD I ever bought. Indeed, it was my first foray into electronic "new age" music (a terrible category for this). I was looking for electronic instrumental music, and, enthused by Tomita's outdoor concerts of European Classical electronically done, picked this up. It is exactly what I was looking for. Buying this CD opened up whole new worlds for me (Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, and their many imitators and followers). Saying that though does a disservice to this recording, as it's a good one itself. Recorded in Houston and Lyon, Jarre starts off with an invigorating snippet of "Oxygene V", which fades into "Ethnicolor", an avant garde piece heavily reliant on sampling technology. The upbeat and catchy "Chants Magnetiques I" and "Eqiunoxe V" are seperated by the more ambient "Souvenir De Chine", which also uses samples, but not as the backbone. "Blessing" comes from the Pope, and then it's the real meat of the show, Jarre's latest work (at the time) "Rendez-Vous". Part III (subtitled "Laser Harp") is an experimental piece, followed by the 11 minute Part II (highlighted by "the Eagle has landed" sample in the middle). "Ron's Piece" wouldn't be out of place on Vangelis's "The City", as Jarre uses electronics in the background, while Kirk Whalum plays sax over that. A soft little piece, the sax part for the album version was intended to be played aboard the ill fated "Challenger" shuttle mission. We close with perhaps Jarre's most famous piece. Rendez-Vous IV is an anthem that has appeared on at least 5 Jarre albums that I can think of, and is a splendid way to close the show. I bought this 7 years ago now, and I still give it 5 stars. At 48 minutes, it's not too long, but it's not so short that it will leave you disappointed. Wanting more maybe...

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent........2002-01-06

This is an outstanding compilation of two mega-concerts made by this french musician and his band.
It comprises most of his best earlier songs and includes compositions made exclusively for the Houston City 250th anniversary and the 25th of the NASA.
The Opera of Lyon orchestra sounds powerful and accurate conducted by Jarre himself. And the choir gives that celestial taste to some of the tracks, particularly the brilliant and quasi-Wagnerian Rendez-vous II.
Portions of radio and TV media describing the previous moments of the concert were included, just as in ¨The Concerts in China¨ some years before. That seems to be Mr. Jarre's trademark on live recordings.
Certainly this audio-only recording do not transmit the heart and soul of what that concerts were -I wish there would be a DVD release of them- but at least we have an extraordinary sample of the splendorous music those nights sounded.

One of Jarre's best! I have listened to this CD over and over and still find the music exquisite! Put it in your car and you will be able to cope with the traffic tie-ups! Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Bizarre mix...........2001-06-10

The concert in Houston which I and 1.5 million of my closest friends attended was truly an awe-inspiring experience. This recording does not do justice to that magical evening when major highways shut down as people simply parked their cars on the Interstates to see and hear the awesome spectacular.

Why, oh why, did JMJ decide to use these ridiculous interviews of Houstonians conducted by local television stations as part of this recording??? I've never understood it. The excerpts from the Channel 13 (KTRH) news just aggrivate me as much as they also cause me to remember how one of the largest cities in the US came to a stop.

The most moving portion of the Houston show was the dedication of the Rendez-vous sections to be played by Ron McNair, one of the 7 astronauts killed after the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger. To hear the version from Lyon left me a little empty.

All this being said, I do recommend this CD. As with most of Jarre's live material, the studio versions have their advantages and drawbacks, but Houston-Lyon does give a feel for what amazing things JMJ can do outside the studio.

4 out of 5 stars Best Jarre Concert Album.......2000-04-20

For any Jarre fan--particularly fans of his earlier works (70's & 80's)--this collection of pieces from the Houston/Lyon concerts is the best concert album available. The version of Ethnicolor which opens the album reverbs, and gives really open feeling of a concert piece. Second Rendezvous is played in its *entirety* (unfortunately rare on many concert releases), features full choir and of course the backing of fireworks. The little-heard Equinoxe Part 7 is featured and makes an etheral concert piece. And finally, IMHO, the version of Fourth Rendezvous played here is the best rendition to date - even beats Hank Marvin's accompanyment from the Docklands concert. Worth the purchase just to get these excellent convert variations on the pieces.
