5 out of 5 stars WOW Worship: Aqua.......2007-07-07

This entire albumn is spiritually uplifting....and a total worship cd. It is awesome! I have copied the words of a few songs to send to America's deployed servicemen and women around the world. I wish I could send the albumn to each of them so they could hear the music! Our church sings nearly every one of the songs on this albumn! And I love the different styles of the individual artists.....Agnus Dei (Worthy is the Lamb) by Third Day is almost a Rock style that I love and I am not a fan of Rock music! Which only goes to show that God can be praised in any form of music! Hope, joy, love, praise are all harmonized in this cd. I love it!

5 out of 5 stars Love WOW worship.......2007-06-27

I love all the WoW worship CD's including this one. You get 2 CD's with 16-17 songs on each CD. These are the most well known worship songs by the original artists. Can't get better worship music than this.

5 out of 5 stars WOW getting better.......2007-06-10

Danish group Aqua arrived on the international pop scene in 1997 with their multimillion-selling smash single "Barbie Girl." Developing a formula pioneered by their successful Swedish rivals Ace of Base and Whigfield, the band demonstrated on this album that they were more than just one-hit wonders (at least in markets outside America). Skillfully crafted for instant, easily digestible consumption, Aquarium is equally entertaining at the club or at home. It's jammed full of bubblegum pop classics, ranging from the Eurodisco opening track "Happy Girls & Boys" to the Madonna-esque ballad "Turn Back Time." A treat for all pop lovers, it is an album that will both entertain and surprise. --John Galilee

5 out of 5 stars Aqua rocks........2007-06-04

Aqua the Europop group from Denmark. They bursted out onto the late 90's Dance music scene with Barbie Girl. But There are other songs on Aquarium that are awesome like Roses Are Red and Turn Back Time. Roses Are Red highlights Rene Dif's awesome unique voice, Just because his voice is really deep doesn't mean he can't sing . He CAN sing He's the Villan where as Lene is the good girl. Speaking of Lene her voice is really sexy to listen to. As She is very sexy. Both her and Rene's voices makes the songs unique and fun to listen to. Aqua are an awesome group. Claus and Soren do a great job with the music itself. and Soren's backing vocals are very good both here and on Aquarius. Aqua's second and final album. So all in all Aquarium is the best dance album. And Aqua is the best Dance group of the 90's. I wish thier career together lasted longer though. Highly Recommended for Rene and Lene's awesome vocals.

5 out of 5 stars Aqua's not all wet.......2007-05-31

This is a wonderful, bubbly pop CD. It's simply ear candy that you can just put in the player and hit play. No urge to skip, just listen. The bouncier, quicker tunes include: Happy Boys and Girls, My Oh My, Barbie Girl [of course, it's the major radio hit off this CD], Doctor Jones, Lollipop, Roses are Red, Calling You. That's the list of just the BEST songs. The others are merely less good; they're no slouches. In summary, this is simply an excellent light listen that will have the listener bobbing along with the beat and humming the melodies at work. If your coworkers can't deal with it, they're just grouches.

5 out of 5 stars A joke nobody seems to get..........2007-05-18

Aqua (and its copy-cat band Toy Box) is deeply based in satire. People keep giving this album for percieved "dirty lyrics" and "bad morals" however songs like Barbie Girl are obviously making fun of the misogyny and sex that saturate American media. IF you are willing to look past the poppy mood of this album it actually has a very amusing, intelligent point behind it. However if you are easily insulted or are buying this for someone under the age of 12 or 13 I would strongly suggest you put some consideration into whether or not you want to take a risk. Overall great CD!

4 out of 5 stars the good album.......2007-02-23

hi i think that this cd is the balm . if you look closely at barbie girl its not the most positive message but it has a great beat

5 out of 5 stars Bubblegum Techno Perfection.......2007-02-20

A guilty pleasure that is guaranteed to perk you up. From the opening track, you can't help but "be happy." But behind the cartoony silliness are simply well-written pop songs that are about as catchy as can be, and not all of them thumping techno either. Turn Back Time is the standout song that truly demonstrates the versatility of this little group of Euro Dance Pop masters. Overall, a super fun listening experience. I'm "calling you now" to give a listen. Many smiles to follow.

Usually when you read that an album is "inspired by" a motion picture or TV show, you can be certain that the one thing those artists were inspired by was a big fat check, and consequently those records generally do not sound very good. But the debut collaboration between no-longer-underground hip-hop artists Dangermouse and MF Doom, allegedly inspired by the Cartoon Network's late-night stoner-centric animation series Adult Swim, is far better than it has any right being. Doom has one of the best flows around, and he's at least as smart as your favorite dictionary-digger. Danger Mouse's obscure samples are excellent, but this is just a fun record that's not trying to be more, or less. Character voices get worked in, and these are pretty cool, especially Shakey's send-up of the fake answering machine cliché. There're also guest appearances by Ghostface Killah, Cee-Lo, and Talib Kweli. When it comes to rappers hanging with cartoon characters, Mouse and the Mask is more fun than a Shaq attack and a Gorillaz record combined. --Mike McGonigal

Album Description

Two of this generation's most respected hip-hop artists, Danger Mouse and MF Doom have come together for this album, inspired by Adult Swim, Cartoon Network's popular late-night animation network. Doom, with his near obsession with masked identities and superhero personas, and Mouse, with his murky, ethereal soundscapes that cloud men's minds like Mandrake, are the perfect partners for the project, and each has inspired the other to the finest work of their careers. "The Mouse & The Mask" contains character voices and skits from Adult Swim's most popular original shows, including "Aqua Teen Hunger Force", "Sealab 2021", and "Harvey Birdman, Attorney At Law", along with guest appearances by Cee-Lo, Talib Kweli, and Ghostface Killah.

4 out of 5 stars Should've been spectacular, got good instead.......2007-06-13

After gaining worldwide notoriety with the ceased and desisted Grey Album, Danger Mouse replaced Dan The Automator as producer for the highly publicized Gorillaz sophomore LP Demon Days. As such, he is currently one of underground hip-hop's hottest beat-makers and this will assuredly continue in light of this MF Doom collaboration. Last year, the Madlib assisted Madvillain saw Doom hitting more lists than not so it's safe to assume The Mouse & The Mask is pretty much destined for success. However, with almost every character from the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim receiving prime breakdown and interlude time, Danger Doom is the basic antithesis of the b-movie horror vibe Madvillainy enjoyed, which probably benefited from a more universal appeal as your enjoyment of this DM and MF release will be greatly affected by your attitude towards the likes of Harvey Birdman and Space Ghost.

4 out of 5 stars [adult swim]'s Commercialization (Rating: 8 out of 10- -4 stars).......2006-12-04

[adult swim] was being viewed by many people who enjoyed humorous cartoons on the Cartoon Network Channel. I might have been watching that channel since the age of 5 (it used to come on locally here in Atlanta up until about '94). [adult swim] has been responsible for bringing us humous PG 13 cartoons such as "Aqua Teen Hunger Force", "Sealab 2120", and more. I believe they felt the need to cash in on the music industry by allowing MF Doom and Danger Mouse to drop an album under the name Danger Doom. And truthfully, I believed that people bought this album, just becasue of the [adult swim] logo on it.

The Danger Doom album "The Mouse And The Mask" was good to listen to. Most of MF Doom's rhymes are good to listen to (a better move over that "Madvillany" album if you ask me). His flow was consistant throughout this album. Danger Doom's production is good too. This was the first time I hear his production, and it was very impressive.

What I like most about this album is the cameos by the cartoon characters themselves. Master Shake appears on a few tracks leaving voice mail messages cussing out Danger Mouse for not letting him rhyme. Meatwad and Brak spits a few rhymes on this album. There are more cartoon cameos throughout this album too.

Guest appearances are few. Ghostface Killah appears on "The Mask" which is good. Cee-Lo sings the hook to "Benzi Box". And my favorite track is "Old School" with Talib Kweli, is perfect.

The problem I have with this album is the length. The album clocks in at about 37 minutes, making it seem kind of short. Also the songs are short in length too, averaging about 2 and a half minutes, not hearing enough Doom.

Other than that, this album is recommended to fans of [adult swim] who haven't purchased this album, or fans of both MF Doom and Danger Mouse. There are no filler tracks here. Just head nodding music. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Hip-Hop at its best.......2006-11-26

This is a OK album considering its one of the first Danger Mouse+M.F. Doom callabo's(other's were November has Come-Gorillaz)If you ask me some of the tracks will leave you wanting more from the duo and some of the beats annoy you(Basket case, benzie box) other than that the samples are ill danger's beats are one of the sickest, and doom's rhymes are ill(always have bee)if you're gonna cop it its worth your monbey!

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Beats.......2006-11-04

I was a little skeptical when I purchased this album, not being all that fond of the only track I had heard MF Doom rap on, "November Has Come" by Gorillaz, but I gave it a chance.

Danger Mouse really shines on this album, making every track completely fresh and funky. MF Doom even grew on me, though, among my favorites would have to be Old School, with Talib Kweli, and Benzi Box, with Cee-Lo. However, the whole album is spectacular really. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the bleeping of profanity. I feel that the content on the album is more adult oriented, as is the subject matter from which it took its inspiration, and as such, I feel that the bleeping was unnecessary.

Great album, though, Doom, Danger, and all the others really took me by surprise, and it ended up that this album was far better than expected.

3 out of 5 stars A little disappointed.......2006-09-28

This is my first album from either artist and I have to say, that I was expecting a little more. Adult Swim really, really pushed this album so I bought it. MF Doom is very good at what he does. His rhymes are off the hook and Danger Mouse kicks butt with making beats. The clips from the Adult Swim crew are pretty funny. But, with the exception of a handful of songs, the album lacks that "I wanna listen to it over and over again" feel. I like the album, but maybe I was expecting too much from it.

On Aquarium, Aqua were "Barbie Girls"; now they're "Cartoon Heroes." A slight change in context for their second album, but, essentially, it's business as usual. And let's not forget that Aqua do this slapstick kiddie-pop thing with a lot more panache than their shamelessly novelty Euro-goons peers. The relentless zaniness of Aquarius may sometimes be cloying, especially those too-chirpy chipmunk voices on "Cartoon Heroes," but there's no denying that this is a pop group that really lives this pop lark--shaved-headed frontman Rene really does talk in that comedy growl and frontwoman Lene really doesn't wear more than a stretched scrap of PVC whenever she leaves the house. This makes Aquarius quite likeable, actually--especially on the slapstick-trance workout of "Around the World," which even manages to squeeze in a brief geography lesson. --Louis Pattison

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2007-05-09

If you like the usual flare of Aqua's music, this will not disappoint. The techno beat is great for dancing, cleaning the house, or just having fun. My kids love it!

5 out of 5 stars Aquarius RULES!!!.......2007-02-16

I am glad Aqua made a album "Aquarius" and a song "Aquarius" because I am a Aquarian as well. My birthday is in January.

4 out of 5 stars A funny album!.......2006-11-10

Well since i was a kid, the only song that i heard of aqua was her classic "Barbie Girl", but i was always curious about this group; I thought they were just one hit wonder group, but i found out that they are great musicians, with lots of great songs, and touching lyrics.
My favorite songs of this albums are cartoon heroes, freaky friday, but above all, aquarius!!! this song it's simply fantastic.
If you wanna have some fun, and then, to have some fantastic memories you must have this album!

3 out of 5 stars Not quite as expected........2006-08-07

I got this album after having faith in their previous one. After all, Aqua was all the rage of kids back then. It changed a lot from the previous album, and it was a whole lot different from "Barbie Girl".

Still, the songs were relatively good, but they never stood out a whole lot to me. They just seemed distant to me, and they didn't quite pack the punch Aquarium had. Though, I still did like the songs on this CD called "Around the World" and "An Apple a Day". As a bonus, this CD also has the music video for "Cartoon Heroes" on it.

3 out of 5 stars Aqua. Plain, simpel, and good earfillers on this one.......2006-04-03

Lene Nystrøm has a certain charisma, and this CD is very "easy listen". When you mix these part`s together, you get an earfriendly mix of good dance/pop music. The reason is the rythmic beat alltrough that makes it as somekind of "quality bubblegum" popmusic. Track 1 Cartoon Heroes, say`s it all. This is very cartoonish, both vocal and musical wise. Lene has a "cartoonish" voice where here voice fits perfect in to this kind of music. Track 2 Around the world is an another exampel, with here let`s call it "squeaky" vocal brings this song forward in a quite interesting way. Rene Dif growling singin
is also a funny contrast, which put`s them together as a whole. Track 3 Freaky Friday, has a fast backbeat rythm, which pushes it more or less headalong in a very fast tempo. Something different this one, with a small dash of country music bit`s and pices here and there. Track 4 We belong to the sea is a great pop song, with more depth to Lene`s and Rene`s voice. It has a melody which is very easy to fetch, and it`s nothing wrong with that. Track 5 An apple a day, it`s a hardtop, fastback, sprint Aqua song, which goes around in a dizzy way. Track 6 Halloween. Aqua goes "horror movie" this time. A creepy opener, but then it fells flat. The rest is to thin to make it scary. There are some weird Rene Dif growls hear and there but it doesn`t help too much. Track 7 Good guys is better and here the right "buttons" when it comes to "hit potensial are put on. There are more debt to Lene`s voice on this one. Track 8 Back from Mars, are in the Sc Fi department. To much cliches, but as Lene has sang before: Life it`s full of cliches. Track 9 Aquarius is the ballad of the CD, and it`s ok, but nothing special. Here voice sounds clear and has some depth and flair on this one. Track 10 Cuba Libre. Aqua does "carriebean" but it ends up as "poor whoman`s ethnic" inspired music.
Track 11. Bumble Bees, it`s a very funky "brainwasher" in a more or less positive sence. Track 12 Goodbye to the circus is a good closer, with a "circus touch" musical whise. Aqua. Plain and simpel dance music, with many times an ear for the good and effective beat and melodies. Aqua is anyway something different, a little bit over average in their genre of music. 3 1/2 star, well somewhere around there.

The poorly drawn late night cable cartoon show Aqua Teen Hunger Force and its cleverly titled movie spin-off are of course far funnier than they have any right to be. Whether the show's audience even gets half the satire is part of its appeal (which is, like, on different levels, man). The Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters soundtrack consists of skits and songs from the film along with new material. And while the absence of Frylock on the album is a bit confusing, it's generally as top rate as the show itself. The Aqua Teen dudes even had the sense to hire the great and out-of-work old school hip-hop artist Schoolly D to compose a new version of their theme song. The Hold Steady song here is pretty decent, but the metal and rap tracks are the real meat, especially the (aforementioned) Schoolly D, Mastodon, Early Man, and Andrew W.K. tracks. Insane-o-Flex's "I Like Your Booty (But I'm Not Gay)" is the definition of "guilty pleasure," just like the movie itself, which is sort of about an immortal piece of exercise equipment which threatens the balance of galactic peace--"and it is up to the Aqua Teen Hunger Force to run away from it." --Mike McGonigal

It starts with master shake singing his great ballad and movies right along into some head smashing metal(Mastadon, Unearth. The soundtrack has a few tracks with the guys from the Hunger Force telling us what they think of the sondtrack. And of course you get meetwad at the end showing us he can rock out. Another beautiful-sounding guitar instrumental disc from the "Aquas". This one is fairly laid back, and didn't knock me out like "Nomad", but I think it's one of those discs that will "grow" on me. I think "Day in the Life of a Private Eye" summarizes the concept here--"Guitar Noir" could be good music for "Film Noir".
As a Shadows fan for over 40 years, I can see their influence at work here--clean, distinctive, melodic playing--if Miles Corbin isn't a Hank Marvin disciple, I would be very surprised.
Nice one !

5 out of 5 stars Stylish, Suave theme tracks for Private Investigators.......2001-07-12

Of course, the cover art is striking. Palm trees framing a cat's eye moon over the golden gate bridge. A view only obtainable from Treasure Island. Its easy to forget that San Franscisco was the home of Sam Spade--a place where Vertigo could be made--Mort Sahl could tell topical jokes between jazz sets, or people would pass around a jug of wine at a poetry reading. This music has all the ambience of the cool, old, San Fransciso of pulp detective novels, beats and cool jazz. I absolutely totally do not understand the remarks of those reviewers who were disappointed in this cd. Comparisons with previous Aqua Velvets releases is unfair. This collection of tunes stands on its own merits. Those you you who don't get it--read the Maltese Falcon or The Big Sleep while you listen--it will start to make more sense to you.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as Nomad.......2001-07-04

I was disappointed in this CD. I have a copy of their earlier collection, Nomad, which is one of the best New Surf releases ever. This doesn't compare. I got this CD expecting a more subdued atmosphere with a little mystery and espionage thrown in. Unfortunately, they sound like a bad Vegas Lounge act. I should know, I live in Vegas. My advice would be to skip this CD and pick up Nomad instead. I hate to say that because I really do like The Aqua Velvets. Maybe next time.

5 out of 5 stars Mystery, Mystery.......2000-02-02

Nothing relaxes me like this disk after a hectic day at work! Just kick back with a dry Vodka Martini and fall into the trace the AV's induce. Also great background for a low-key and laidback party...

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......1999-07-21

Do drum machines belong in surf music? I'm not sure. But this CD certainly poses the question. We all know that the guitar is the centerpiece of surf music but even the other instruments must have some "real" soul to make it work. There's no creativity or inspiration here. There are one or two decent tunes but most are just lackluster and listless. The beauty of surf music is it's deceptive simplicity. But the simplicity in this outing is readily apparent. It's too predictable. It's like the disappointment of going to a movie you've really wanted to see only to figure out every twist and turn miles before you get there. There's more to great surf (or other kinds of) music than just throwing down a few chords and running some scales across them. It require intellect, imagination, and inspiration. All of which this CD is in desparate need of. YOU could make better surf music than this. Just go buy a Strat with a whammy and an amp with reverb; learn a few basics and you're there. Just leave the CPU's at home. If you really want some cool, exciting surf music I suggest Laika and the Cosmonauts.

4 out of 5 stars "I'm lit like a Branch Davidian, or what's left of the lithium in Cobain's Cranium".......2007-06-26

Eating's Not Cheating is easily Chris' most distinct and unique work. His other albums are known for tons of geeky pop culture references and funny skits to break up the songs. Eating's contains few of the former and none of the latter. Instead of songs about Star Wars and stuff like that, it focuses more on his thoughts about drugs and girls. It's easily the least nerdy thing he's done and from a standpoint of pure rap prowess, it's probably his best album. It's filled with great beats and very strong lyrics. Whether you actually like it the most depends on what exactly you like about him, just quality rap or that along with the dorkiness he's known for.

I got the reissue, which has three extra songs and two remixes. "MC Chris Owns" starts off strong with an awesome sound to it, and is followed by easily the silliest song on the album. "Illy Oi" is the first new track, and it's got a nice beat and fun chorus. "Tractorbeam" is probably my favorite, with great, very descriptive lyrics and a nice sound. The record continues along on with a good groove. The songs are maybe a bit more same-y than on his other works, but it's all consistently at least pretty good. "Care Bear" is a little different, with the only backing to Chris' rap being his own beatboxing. "Boys Don't Cry" is one of those sweeter songs he does sometimes, and I like it a lot, though I might like it more if the chorus didn't include the line "I'm jonesin' harder than Gollum." It would be fine elsewhere, but it doesn't really fit the mood. The album ends with "My Name Is", which is a prime example of Chris' penchant for telling us what his name is as often as it fits the song. One of his better lines from earlier is "My self-aggrandizing and deprecation keeps 'em guessing", and it's pretty true. MC has plenty of songs both praising his own prowess and others where he doesn't give himself a break. Whatever he really thinks, he's definitely good at making fun music.

4 out of 5 stars Not a perfect rap album, but's really enjoyable........2006-02-02

Okay, this is not meant to be an incredible, mind-blowing experience like the Marshall Mathers LP or the Wu-Tang Clan. Pick your favourite of the great rap artists. mc chris is not it. So why listen to this CD?

Because it's fun. There are few things more enjoyable than listening to rap with good rhymes, obscure phrases, and an incredible flow (yes, mc chris can do all of those with the best of them). If you don't believe me, Google him. Go to his website, and download his first album for free (that's what I did to get into him). His song off of that album "Fett's Vette" is among the wittiest and best rap songs I can think of.

mc chris is an independent rapper (not a rap artist, he's more of just a rapper). His rap style is rather like a faster version of the Licensed to Ill Beastie Boys - immature, infantile, and rather nerdy. Of course he's nerdy, he's part of the nerdcore rap movement. But he moves out of being a simple flash-in-the-pan nerd riding a movement. Especially in this album.

For being independent, this album is well produced. Rap music can take incredibly high production values sometimes. Instead, we have on this a lot of synthesizers, a lot of good beats, and a lot of work put into an album for probably a small fraction of the usual cost of a rap album. It is like 90% of the taste for 1% of the calories.

mc chris ignores the seriousness that rap artists have tried to establish. And it shows. This can easily hurt most artists, and damage the message that they try to give you. Fortunately, mc chris is not most artists, and he doesn't have a message.

4 out of 5 stars Not his best, but still better than the rest..........2005-09-07

You might know MC Chris (Chris Ward) better as MC Pee Pants, Sir Loin, or Little Brittle on [adult swim]'s Aqua Teen Hungerforce and Hesh on Sealab 2021. This album features 14 tracks (all music, no skits on this one) of white bread nerdy hip-hop. While that might not sound appealing to you're average hip-hop fan, for those of us who love hip-hop's infectious sound yet can't identify with the lyrics, this is the perfect solution. Especially if like me you're early years were spent sleeping on Lando Calrusian's face (empire bed sheets) while deciding what alignment your warrior should be (chaotic-nuetral). That's not to say traditional hip-hop fans won't find this album entertaining. This music crosses boundries.

The rhymes are old school and fit well with Chris' high pitched voice. He flows very well and the rhymes never sound forced. DJ John (John Fewell), the person responsible for the beats, does an excellent job at providing a background that's varied and well put together. Elements of drum and bass, break beat, and even punk (with the misfits bass line on Evergreen) find their way onto this album.

(...)

If you find yourself to be a fan then check out this album. It's extremely good. Also check local listings to catch the man on tour. Absolutely awesome shows. Only reason it's four stars instead of five is because I don't think this is his best album. Like the title says though, it's better than 99% of the stuff that's played on the radio nowadays. Pick it up.

While the Aqua Velvets have been at the forefront of the surf revival, their music is no slavish rehash of the genre's past glories. Instead the group offers an intriguing mix of surf stylings alongside a more complex menu of echo-laden Ennio Morricone-style spaghetti-Western soundtrack music, Latin rhythms, shimmering psychedelia, and ultrahip lounge lizardry. Nomad is their third and most accomplished effort, thanks to the sensual sway of the title track opener, the gradually building intensity of "Surf Nouveau," the evocative (and wonderfully titled) "Smoking Panatelas on the Blue Mediterranean Sea," and the roiling "Holly Tiki." And that's just the first four tracks. Overall, Nomad offers the perfect accompaniment for your next surfin' safari or even a quiet evening on the couch. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars Great Music for Cruising Around Town.......2006-04-24

I first heard this group while listening to an internet radio station that was playing the track "Surf Nouveau". When I first heard that song I was blown away buy the sound and feel of the music. It made me feel like getting up and moving around. When I finally tracked down the CD and bought it, I was equally impressed by all of the tracks especially the one titled "Return to Paia". This track made me say "Whoa", this one makes you wish you were on a warm beach somewhere drinking somthing with one of those little umbrellas sticking out of it as you watch a beautiful island sunset. If you close your eyes and listen to this music it makes you feel really good.

All I can say is you can't go wrong with this CD if you like modern surf inspired music. This is not straight Dick Dale or Ventures stuff for those of you who are only looking for that kind of music though.

4 out of 5 stars Fine effort by The Aqua Velvets.......2006-01-05

This is an excellent album, though not quite the equal of "The Aqua Velvets", in my opinion.

The first song on the CD, and the one from which the album takes it's name, "Nomad", is a stunner . . . just beautiful, the CD is worth the price just for this one song. "Return to Paia" will make you imagine that you're a "ghost rider" on the set of "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", definitely another keeper.

All in all . . . cool as ice.

4 out of 5 stars Mysterious Surf.......2005-09-27

The first tune Nomad gives me chills every time I hear it. The Aqua Velvets have the mysterious surf sound down to a science. This is where they shine. Sometimes the pace picks up and they loose me. But in the dreamy Lynch like moody tunes they are untouchable!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-07-26

Being a long time instrumental surf music fan (Dick Dale, Ventures, Shadows), I was very pleasantly surprised by this album. This album not only stays true to the genre but takes it further than just a revival approach. Compositions and guitar of Miles Corbin is very melodic and lyrical. I would recommend it to any surf music fans out there, take a chance and you will also be delighted.

3 out of 5 stars Surfin' Samples.......2004-01-31

Almost all of the Aqua Velvets music sounds like computer/midi samples. Too pristine and antiseptic and this "band" could definitely use a more acoustic or live soundstage. I have no problem with the Martin Denny or Les Baxter exotica/noir lounge jazz sound , just that it does not have the earthy presence of "live" instruments. It is possible to achieve this acoustic mix even with a computer. Just listen to "Surf Mania" their original release from the early 90s and check out the very "live" vibe brought to "Hawaiian Blue" by Donn Spindt's drums.

With the seventh installment of Pavarotti & Friends: For Cambodia and Tibet, the beloved tenor assembles yet another all-star cast of musicians in hopes of helping the children of Cambodia and Tibet. The music of the pop stars--which ranges from the modern rock of the veteran Eurythmics to the dance-pop of Aqua--really steals the show here, with Pavarotti lending his impeccable vocal support. Tracy Chapman performs "Baby Can I Hold You" as a duet with Pavarotti, and Eurythmics team up with him on "There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)." Of course, the tenor's fans will be begging to hear the opera great in his element, and it's no surprise that he shines on Bizet's "Agnus Dei," with international pop star Mónica Naranjo joining in; Eduardo Di Capua's "O Sole Mio," with Savage Garden; or even Luigi Denza's "Funiculi, Funicula," with Aqua and a children's chorus. As globetrotting benefit tributes go, this is a mixed bag, but there's probably something here for everyone. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Excellent video...........2002-10-13

I am a fan of Savage Garden, The Eurythmics, and George Michael - all of them did a great job with and without Pavarotti....

And the man who sang O SOLE MIO - Darren Hayes (formerly of Savage Garden)... has the most beautiful- angelic- sultry and great voices I have ever heard - and to do it in Neapoliaton Italian (dialect) and in my opinion the best duet of ALL of them featured!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great songs sung by a diverse group of artists.......2002-02-07

As always, Maestro Pavarotti's Modena concerts are highly entertaining and uplifting.
All artists sang two songs during the concert (one on their own and another with Maestro Pavarotti), but unfortunately not all of the songs are featured on this video. Another shortcoming is that there are no interviews or any extra footage.

It is funny to hear Pavarotti sing a pop tune as it is equally funny to see a pop singer with virtually no voice doing "O Sole Mio", but if it is all in good spirit and for charity, then it is enjoyable.

If you are intersted in European music scene or simply love Pavarotti, this tape will be a great treat for you.

5 out of 5 stars Pavarotti's Best War Child Concert.......2002-01-04

Bravo showed this concert on New Years 2002 and it blew my mind. It is certainly the best of the War Child concerts, which started in 1996 as Pavarotti's effort to help the children of war-torn countries.
Like in the previous concerts, Pavarotti appears with international pop stars in the open-air piazza of his home town, Modena, Italy. (How do I get tickets for that?)
If you haven't heard any of these concerts, also available on CDs, you will be surprised how well Pavarotti's voice--a voice that makes the gods swoon--blends with the likes of Enrique Iglesias, George Michael, Tracy Chapman, and the Eurythmics. Previous concerts included B.B. King, Elton John, Ricky Martin, and Liza Minelli. Sometimes he sings along in English, sometimes in Italian counterpoint. The effect is stupdendous! These concerts display all the beauty of this great operatic voice while at the same time honoring the art of our greatest pop artists.
What makes this video the best is the children's chorus, the combined Ars Canto of Parmi, Italy, and the Children's Choir of Cambodia and Tibet. The video starts with this chorus joining Pavarotti and the totally sexy Enrique Iglesias in a rousing "Cielito Lindo."
Pavarotti really knows entertainment and in this one he pulls out all the stops! Best of all, part of the proceeds of this tape goes to benefit the children of Cambodia and Tibet. Pavarotti's efforts to help War Child have already built music centers for children in Kosovo, Liberia, and Guatemala. What great leadership!
He says on one of his jackets: "All too often, children are betrayed by the inhuman actions of adults, and become the innocent victims of war and cruelty. War Child is an energetic, and practical organization offering vital hope, working tirelessly for children to regain their rightful place in the world."

4 out of 5 stars Very diverse! Loved it!.......2000-12-18

I am a HUGE Savage Garden fan so that was the main reason to buy this album. And I have to say Darren's voice is AWESOME in "O Sole Mio", the first time I listened to it it made me cry. So I bought the cd. I was glad to see that there are very enjoyable songs in the album not only the SG tracks. I loved Tracy Chapman's "Baby Can I Hold You Tonight" performance, now I am a Tracy fan too. You'll enjoy the performances by Aqua, Enrique Iglesias and Eurhytmics and of course the queen Tracy Chapman " ("Telling Stories" is superb!). I even discovered some new artists I had never heard of and I liked them. You won't be disappointed by this album.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderfully enjoyable and diverse collection of music.......2000-11-05

This collection of music has given me great pleasure. Aqua's Around the World is a joy. Hearing the Eurythmics and Pavarotti perform together is fun and beautiful. I also especially liked Enrique Iglesias's Be with you. 20 tracks and 77 minutes of great music I will listen to again and again. And all for a good cause.

This was great music when it was released years ago and still is. Only now, you can get their first two releases on one CD!

5 out of 5 stars Ignore Dex.......2006-08-24

If I recall correctly, the guitars always sounded muddled on the first McGuffey Lane album. It was the effect they were going for. After waiting decades for this release, don't let a technical description keep you from buying this. It's McGuffey Lane's first album for God's sake! Buy it! Relive it! Rejoice! This is what all McGuffey Lane fans have been waiting for! If you like country rock, you will enjoy this package. Aqua Dream is a little harder edged. Go back in time to Zachariah's. Drink beer. Be happy.

3 out of 5 stars Good try but bad execution........2006-07-30

After having the LP, for years I have been wanting to get my hands on the original album on CD. Finally, after the failed "The Songs From the First Album," we are able to have the actual studio version! However, my excitement was short-lived once I played it. The music sounds muffled--especially compared to the MP3s I had downloaded years ago. The base is fine, but the guitar rifts sound muddied. It's almost as though they tried to master the copy from an LP while trying to filter pops and scratches. Buy if you must, but don't expect much.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great CD featuring two outstanding albums.......2006-07-27

Below is a review I wrote for this release when it came out last summer. The first two McGuffey Lane albums are outstanding, and this disk is the first time they have been out on CD. Great timeless music from a great band.
The four albums McGuffey Lane did for Atlantic Records in the 80's are finally available on CD, thanks to the good people at Collector's Choice Music, one of Rhino Records' labels. They are packaged two albums on one CD, with their self-titled 1980 effort and 1981's Aqua Dream on one disc, and Let the Hard Time's Roll (1982) and Day by Day (1984) on another. The packaging includes the original artwork from the original albums, and enjoyable liner notes written by long time lead guitarist/vocalist John Schwab.
The first disk contains many of the band penned originals from their days as the house band in the late 70's at the old Zachariah's Red Eye Saloon, which was located on High Street directly across from the Ohio State campus, and was the center of the live music scene in Columbus at the time. The second disk contains the songs from their time as a national touring band in the 80's, and has more of a Nashville sound to it.
There is wonderful stuff on both disks from a band that had three talented singer/songwriters, featured several terrific musicians (especially steel guitarist Terry Efaw and keyboardist/harmonica whiz Tebes Douglass), and possessed a unique country rock sound with more than a touch of bluegrass and traditional rock and roll thrown into the mix. When the band members came of age and picked up their first instruments as early teens in the 60's, Columbus was the Mason-Dixie line of the radio industry. These guys grew up on the Beatles, Stones, and Beach Boys played on the AM radio giants in the north, but also listened to George Jones, Hank Snow, Bill Monroe, and a lot of other traditional artists on country stations form the south not heard on the radio above Interstate 70 in the East or Midwest. All of these influences can be heard in the music found on both of these disks.
Signature concert favorites like "People Like You," "Green Country Mountains," "Stay in Love with You," and "Outlaw Rider," as well as their first national charted single "Long Time Loving You," can be found on the first disk. Three songs that made it to the Country Top 100 highlight the second disk, "Making a Living (Has Been Killing Me)," Day by Day," and "The First Time."
The band would deal with several tragic personal losses, and the glory days of country rock faded away. However, even without much of their music available on CD the last twenty years, the band's fans have never really forgotten them or their music. The surviving members of the band still play out 40 to 50 times a year, including headlining at many fairs and festivals throughout the Ohio Valley region, and also an annual reunion show in Columbus each January. To check out more about McGuffey Lane visit their website at [...]. If you were one of their fans back in the day, or a fan of country rock in general, pick up either of these new releases.
