Amazon.com's Best of 1999
In a jaw-dropping return to his roots, banjoist Béla Fleck led a stellar lineup (Jerry Douglas, Earl Scruggs, Tony Rice, and Sam Bush, to name a few) through one of his finest albums. With incredible musicianship and a smidgen of Fleck's genre-hopping personality ("Polka On The Banjo"), The Bluegrass Sessions is fun, nostalgic, and inspiring. --Jason Verlinde
Amazon.com essential recording
Béla Fleck, the banjo-wizard leader of the fringe-jazz quartet the Flecktones, returns to more-bluegrass-oriented concerns with this 18-song outing, a complement to 1988's Drive and a more-traditional follow-up to 1995's fusion-leaning Tales from the Acoustic Planet. Most of these songs are instrumentals boasting Drive's core group of Sam Bush on mandolin, Stuart Duncan on fiddle, Tony Rice on guitar, Jerry Douglas on Dobro, and bassist Mark Schatz; they're augmented in spots by fine guest players such as Vassar Clements, John Hartford, and the incomparable banjo pioneer Earl Scruggs. Fleck's spidery, tasteful plucking style lends originals like "Major Honker" and "Katmandu" an ever-so-slightly offbeat air, while he gives classics like Scruggs's "Foggy Mountain Special" and "Polka on the Banjo" traditional readings that wouldn't be out of place at the Opry. Flecktones fans will find much to like in Fleck's rootsy playing, and so will bluegrass purists. --Gregory McNamee
Customer Reviews:
This is one of my favorit Bela Fleck records!.......2007-01-10
I love this CD, i think it is one of the best bluegrass collections Bela has produced, with a host of different styles and artists.
A Rarity..........2006-07-19
It's rare when a sequel exceeds the original. This album, though, exceeds the first "Acoustic Planet" effort by Fleck.
Why? Well, the playing is better technically, if you can believe that. And the energy and drive is stronger here than in Acoustic Planet 1.
You also get treated to a greater number of original compositions on this CD. I've come to appreciate this dimension of Fleck's artistic gifts even more as time has passed. While he does do a lot of variations on derivative music, his original compositions are memorable, too.
Hair Raising.......2006-04-12
I've had this album for two years now and it still sometimes makes my hair stand on end when I listen to it and I don't even consider myself a SERIOUS bluegrass fan. Absolutely amazing!
Outstanding CD!.......2006-02-25
Bela Fleck is arguably the premeir banjo player in the world and he does not disappoint on this CD. His music and that of the musicians he has gathered to play with him is superb. If your feet aren't tapping to the music in short order, then you probably have a few disconnnected nerves leading to them.
If you enjoy Americana/Bluegrass/Country, then you'll love this CD!
If I could recommend only one CD to anyone, this would be it........2005-11-20
This is the CD that was singlehandedly responsible for revealing my long-hidden love of bluegrass music to me. I can listen to it in any season or mood and at any time of day. Each performer on the CD has moved beyond mastery of his instrument to fusion with it, and the results are incredible to hear. My favorite track on the CD is "Buffalo Nickel," which combines a gorgeous wistful melody with a constantly shifting meter and an undercurrent of satisfaction. Other favorites include the rollicking opening track of "Blue Mountain Hop," the well-titled "When Joy Kills Sorrow," the lullaby favorite "The Over Grown Waltz," the deliciously fast ending track "Major Honker"...well, who am I kidding? The entire CD is amazing. It gets my highest recommendation. Don't waver. Buy it. You'll be glad you did.

Very calming and relaxing drumming.......2007-05-08
This is a very nice CD when I put it in to play my whole house relaxed and clamed down and just listened very nice. The drumming is fantatsic, but if you do not like native american flutes not a CD for you in some parts of the CD the flutes are very loud. But I really enjoy this CD.
Drum Medicine.......2007-01-12
I really enjoy both CD's Sacred Spirit Drums and Drum Medicine. I live in an area of very little resource for this type of purchase- I was very happy to find what I wanted online- also very glad to be able to listen before I purchased- would not have bought them without that. Service was the best- shipping was also very good.. I will consider this type of purchase again when needed.
Awesome Drum CD.......2006-07-13
This CD is awesome I have it in my car now and that is all I play.
Drum Medicine rocks........2006-03-11
This is the best cd for playing along with drums or dancing up a storm.
Incredible - can this be the work of two white men?????.......2005-09-01
You have to listen to this CD to believe it. I hear the Native American flute, drums .... it's one incredible CD. I bought it to learn to drum but enjoy listening to it just for relaxation, trance states, etc. This is superb!

Bela Fleck has completely transcended any and all expectations we have for the banjo. Having spent the better part of five previous years exploring a variety of formal and improvised designs with his virtuoso ensemble, Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, this banjo innovator chose to celebrate a variety of musical friends and influences on this homey, elegant, immaculately recorded aural novella--one that clearly links him to such progressive jazz/fusion forebears as Return to Forever and Oregon (not to mention Bill Monroe & His Bluegrass Boys). While a manic hoe-down like "Cheeseballs in Cowtown" illustrates his command of post-modern bluegrass, his freeform duet "Bicyclops" (with mentor Chick Corea) is indicative of this great musician's astonishing technical and emotional range. Elsewhere tunes such as "Up and Running," "The Great Circle Route," and "System Seven" seem to reconcile his complex rhythmic inclinations with stately folkish themes, mixing traditional bluegrass instrumentation with the likes of electric bass, drums, piano, and oboe. And on extended forms such as "Circus of Regrets" and "Jayme Lynn," Fleck showcases his ever-expanding breadth and range as a modern composer. --Chip Stern
Customer Reviews:
Classic!.......2007-01-25
This is the first Bela Fleck record I ever purchased (April '95). Have been a huge fan from then on. This is still on of my favorite Bela records. Excellent songwriting, playing etc... The Landing and System Seven are two of my favorite songs ever. Both are very moving in different ways.
Bluegrass Fusion Lives!.......2007-01-11
Along with mates such as Jerry Douglas (dobro), Sam Bush (mandolin), Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Chick Corea (piano), Edgar Meyer (bass) and others, virtuoso banjoist Bela Fleck here recreates another CD of his masterful approach to acoustic bluegrass fusion.
With this remarkable CD, Americana has a new infusion of creative energy!
Master of Many Genres.......2007-01-05
Few musicians qualify as "master" of any genre. Bela Fleck joins Benny Goodman as one who qualifies as a master of many -- Blue Grass, Jazz, Classical. Any album associated with the name "Fleck" is worth your time.
Definitely Different.......2006-10-29
One of the nicest things about this CD is that it doesn't particularly sound like most other banjo albums. Sometimes I want the excitement of flying down gravelly roads in a hillbilly truck chasin badguys but usually by the end of the chase I'm tired and ready for something else or passed out. It gets old pretty quick but this CD doesn't! This is one of the most interesting titles featuring the banjo that I've ever heard in that it crosses into fields of bluegrass, pop, jazz, folk, fusion and back effortlessly. The recording itself is excellent too. No overamplified instruments or unbalanced sound anywhere.
Of course if you're looking for a sountrack to a Dukes of Hazzard, Sheriff Lobo or Smokey and the Bandit flic this probably isn't gonna do it fer ya but it's easily one of the most played instrumental CDs in my place.
From Good to Great?.......2006-07-19
The songs on this album are memorable and powerful. It's hard not to appreciate the sheer originality of Fleck's work.
However, the sparkle and energy of the earlier "electric" works are not evident here, and I miss them too much. While he is a virtuoso player, he cannot sustain as much interest as what I came to like so much in the amplified and synthsized works.
The album is very listenable, and I do prefer it for background music when working, etc. But it cannot sustain my interest.

Michael Hedges hardly needed to prove that he was an astonishing performer in person as well as in the studio, but Live on the Double Planet does the job nonetheless. Hedges features a number of songs from his brilliant Breakfast in the Fields release, including that album's title track and the acrobatic "Silent Anticipation." He throws a few vocal numbers into the mix as well, including standard-issue covers like Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower," the Beatles' "Come Together," and one from far out in left field, Sheila E's (courtesy of Prince) "A Love Bizarre." The album shows off Hedges's sense of humor as well, as he interpolates a vocal riff from the Rolling Stones' "Miss You" into "The Funky Avocado." --Daniel Durchholz
Customer Reviews:
A TRAILBLAZING GUITARIST.......2006-09-04
This is a wonderful cd but just hearing him does not fully depict how amazing of an artist he was.
If you are here, then you must be a guitar nut. Go all the way and get the dvd "WIndham Hill Live" where Hedges plays 3 or 4 songs.
He is not only phenomenal but also you can see the physicality of his playing. It puts his music in a totally different light! That dvd is the absolutely best work by this tremendous musical visionary.
bizzare and beautiful.......2006-02-10
this being the only Micheal Hedges album that i own and the only one that i have heard, i cannot comment in much detail about how this compares to his other recordings; but Live On The Double Planet is an extraordinary listen. full of inventive and creative playing that is beautiful and mind-boggling. the cover songs are amazing and really break out of the mold of the original...some are almost unrecognizeable until the vocals begin. the quiet pieces are the most effective compositions on here... the mood is very reflective and the beauty in his playing is astonishing.
A watershed.......2004-11-23
Unaware of how into the genre I had become, a friend of mine, one day, told me that if I combined the words new and age it would be read "newage." That, he went on to say would rhyme with sewage, a word perhaps best describing the former. I laughed at the little quip. But in the back of my mind I tried to search for an example of genius in the genre which might turn the tide in his thinking should it come up again. My conclusion was Michael Hedges and specifically this album. "Live on the Double Planet" is a snapshot of the full range Hedges' genius.
An authentic original. Sadly missed........2003-11-26
You ever had that feeling after deciding to be adventurous and plunking down $17, that you wished you'd played it safer? I had this feeling with this CD--for a day or two at most. It grew on me like few CDs have, until it became THE CD of the summer in which I bought it, and one of my very favorites of all time. It's original without being self-indulgent, technically astounding without losing the music, full of different moods, a great live ambience, and even humor. I adore it. I missed hearing Michael Hedges in person, and now I'll never get the chance (it was one black morning indeed when I heard he'd died). Don't you miss this CD.
Accurate for the Era.......2003-09-03
I was fortunate to see many of Michael's shows around the time this was recorded and also got to sit down a few times and talk with him about what he was trying to accomplish with the live recordings. His previous studio album (Watching My Life Go By) had been the first to include vocals, which had not overly impressed the bosses at Windham Hill. So they sent him on the road to do some live recordings, hopeing it would be a learning experience that would eventually yield better studio vocal performances.
For those of you that didn't listen to Michael at the time, many fans seriously disliked Watching My Life Go By, much in the way ardent Dylan fans revolted when he went electric at Newport. Hedges fans just wanted to hear Michael play his Savage Myth Guitar and keep the vocal parts trimmed down to the introductions. But Michael had a vision for his future and a big part of it included singing to compliment his Heavy Mental approach.
I guess I wasn't the typical Hedges fan - I enjoyed his singing, mostly because of the spirit of joy that he experienced while singing. Some of the songs on this set are not my favorites, but they were staples for his concerts in this era. To me, this disc is like sitting through the first half of one of Michael's shows, complete with the crowd energy he was capable of generating with ease.
Also included here are two cover tunes (Love Bizarre and Come together). His live shows often included three or so cover tunes such as the above or possibly Pinball Wizard, Emminence Front, Let's Get It Up, She Drives Me Crazy or Sofa, among others. I always got a kick out of hearing him cover tunes - I mean, think about how many solo acoustic acts have successfully covered AC/DC, Prince, the Who and Frank Zappa? But this just goes to show how versitile and gifted Michael was. I'm so happy to have had (and to have taken) the opportunity to see so many of his shows early in his career. His later tours were also excellent, but these were before the loss of innocence, while he was very hungry for success. That hunger also meant that the negative feedback he got about his vocals was difficult for him to take. But rather than receeding into a shell and reverting back to all-acoustic material, he continued to sing. I believe that this was the right decision. Singing while playing live gave excellent counterpoint to his instrumental works and, in his own words: "Gave me a few minutes to relax, then to focus more intensely on the instrumentals".

Great Driving Music!.......2005-08-06
That's not all. It is very relaxing. You can listen to it anytime to calm down and cool out. Craig Chaquico is a talented artist, and this is some of his best work. If you like this style of music, I also recommend From The Redwoods To The Rockies by Craig Chaquico and Russ Freeman. Very nice stuff.
Chrome robot music.......2003-12-30
I think beautiful chromed robots would make love to this album.
This album is labelled 'New Age' because of the light synthesizer sound, that there are no lyrics and that some of the songs drift off into spacey tangents. I respect Craig's guitar work, he's an excellent technician. I just find the songwriting to be uninspired. This album feels antiseptic to me, it's not earthy and textured, it's spacey and smooth. If you like light jazz and new age, then this is for you. If you like acoustic guitar with humanizing imperfections then I recommend looking elsewhere.
not bad actually...........2003-11-18
i dont really listen to new age music, but i love any kind of good instrumental guitar, and i had always heard about him so i decided to give him a shot... this isnt too bad actually- Craig has a good, unique style.. its nice relaxing acoustic guitar for when you just want to sit and think. check this cd out if u like Yngwie Malmsteen or other neoclassical guitarists
Joureny into the Acoustic Planet.......2003-02-22
This album was a definant leap for Chaquico as he mastered his sound to the fullest on this album and created something very unique. This album just seems "alive" with flow and feeling. The poems and quotations that highlight the songs really make the album a creative journey (similarly to the previous album ). Acoustic Planet moves and flows through a soundscape of Tribal Native-American, New-Age, and Jazz movements that in the end, show to flow as one and complete the concept of "Acoustic Planet".
Ben.

Best Jazz Guitar I've heard.......2002-09-26
Craig just can't be pidgeon-holed. All those years with rock bands. Then he's on the shelves solo as "New Age".
So the "Jazz" radio stations don't play him, and Jazz fans don't know he exists. But to me the last half of the cut "Acoustic Planet" is the best jazz guitar improvization I've ever heard. Enthralling no matter how many times I listen!

Opening with Clara Rockmore's reworking of Tchaikovsky with the theremin, and finishing with one of Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes, OHM artfully succeeds in its goal of giving a representative (as opposed to the impossible, comprehensive) overview of the first several decades of electronic music. Over 3 discs, 42 compositions, and 96 pages of notes and photos, OHM clearly illustrates the producers' and contributing writers' point that early electronic music is much of the foundation of contemporary music. Herein lies the connective tissue bridging musique concrète, 20th-century classical, electronic experimentation, and the theoretical avant-garde to psychedelia, ambient, dub, techno, electro, and synthpop and the globalization of sound. The groundbreaking uses of loops, sampling, drones, remixes, and cut-and-paste technology are put fully into context. The diversity of music included makes any sort of summation impossible, but that is also the point: electronic music is not really a genre, but an open field of endless possibility. From John Cage's famous "William's Mix" of tape snippets to Karkheinz Stockhausen's electronic orchestral compositions, from David Tudor and Holger Czukay's experiments in unrelated blendings of audio elements to David Behrman's supremely peaceful duet between computers and musicians, the aural renegades on OHM tread where none (save a few of their contemporaries) had gone before. The liner notes convey the incredible amount of hard work and experimentation it took to stitch together many of these pieces in the predigital era. Putting aside the inevitable quibbles about what's missing (much of it due to legal and/or logistical issues), a more complete collection of musical eggheads, eccentrics, and visionaries is hard to imagine. --Carl Hanni

excellent but uncomplete.......2006-11-12
Althought most of the music here is an excellent collection of electronic music history, this 3 CDs lack of the important contribution given by the RAI phonology studios of Milan, Italy in the 50s
(which was bigger than Koln's WDR studios) with Bruno Maderna, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono.
This is a big mistake. Milans studios were the biggest of europe and produced many important electroacoustic pieces.
If the collection aim to describe faithfully electronic music history, it should include this artists too.
To call it music may be a bit limiting. .......2006-10-24
Some of the tracks on here are "music". That is that they contain all the bits we're trained to experience as music -- melody, etc. Some are not, and the composers would be the first people to tell you that. A lot of these works are reactions to ingrained rules, so they're bound to be jarring.
A more successful way to approach such a broad and varied collection of audio experimentation is to think of it as curated sound. This isn't something to wash the dishes to, or to seduce someone to (although if you did manage to seduce someone with the recordings on this anthology, HOLD ON TO THAT PERSON, because they've got to be a keeper). These are unique sound textures that deserve a close, probably solitary listen, and I think if you're in the right frame of mind, it can be a very rewarding listen.
My main complaint is sequencing: each dicrete piece follows it's own internal logic, so there are more than a couple rough gear changes. However, since each piece is so different, and the collection is so varied, I'm not sure that you could totally escape that.
A worthwhile collection.......2006-01-11
The OHM collection contains some of those ground breaking electronic compositions that have shaped today's styles, from the early electronic instruments of Theremin and Martenot, through Pierre Schaeffer's Music Concrete tape music and the electronic music of Stockhausen and Subotnick, to the mainframe computer output of Risset and Chowning.
It is unfair to mark this collection down due to the production quality and 'musicality' of its contents, to do so would be to staggeringly miss the point of the development of electronic music through the 20th Century. What this collection shows is the ideas behind those at the cutting edge of the genre before many could even conceive of such output. That said it is hard going at points, as experimental music can be.
Highlights for me are no doubt Olivier Messiaen's 'Oraison' on CD 1, David Tudor's 'Rainforest Version 1' on CD 2 and on CD 3 David Behrman's 'On the Other Ocean' and Maryanne Amacher's 'Living sound Patent Pending'.
OhMyGodHowDreadful.......2005-08-15
Ok, this collection is supposed to be early works and, thus not expected to be very sophisticated or polished. But the OHM collection sounds like the first attempt of a spastic cat turned-loose on a Moog keyboard. When it is not boreing, this collection of random and dissonant sounds (I can't call it music) is without any redeeming qualities to make it worth while. Don't get me wrong, I am a long-time fan of Wendy (nie Walter) Carlos and some other real pioneers of electronic music. However, I find that the Ohm collection has no similar qualities and is a major disappointment.
Kid Stockhausen.......2003-01-17
This is required listening for anybody interested in the history of electronic music. Although implicitly aiming for the techno music audience, this audio history is overwhelmingly focused on the classical avant-garde of electro-acoustic composers. The closest you'll get to pop electronica is the Brian Eno track at the end of the third disc. No Kraftwerk, no Moroder, etc. Instead "OHM" manages to point to the continuities between, say, John Cage and artists currently working at the experimental edges of electronica (so-called IDM). It seems to be saying, "You think Kid 606 is visionary? Well check out this Stockhausen track from '59!"
Admittedly, some of the songs are much more interesting to think about than they are to listen to. Some of the early pieces that were made through thosuands of hours of pains-taking tape-splicing could be made today in an afternoon with a digital audio editor and a few effects plug-ins.
It is a beautiful package, containing a 90 page booklet of essays, quotations from the featured artists, and photographs. What all music should be: an education in daring.

The CD has a especial annointing for worshipers. The CD is powerful.
Prophetic Worship -- par excellance!.......2005-12-10
I read the first review and have NO idea what that person expected from this CD. But Cloud By Day is one of the most powerful prophetic cds out and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in prophetic music...especially edgy, "out of the box" music. And besides, the quality of its instrumentation and vocals is super as well.
cloud by day-prophetic worship.......2005-09-13
With all due respect to the artists and worshippers involved in what I am sure was a great investment, this cd was a considerable disappointment. The words "prophetic worship" carry significant weight and should be used with great care.
I encourage that this cd be sampled before purchasing and hope that others disagree.

Fourth in the family of Celtic Twilight recordings, Celtic Planet is an ambitious, charming, and at times surprising collection of Celtic-inspired music from around the globe. Spain's Celtic-cultured Galician region is represented by the band Fia Na Roca's pipe on "Ou Sube a Terra ou Baixa O Ceo" and by flautist Carlos Nunez's "Two Shores," quite effectively combining Ry Cooder's flavorful guitar playing with soaring flute melody and accordion. Indian singer Sheila Chandra's "Lament of McCrimmon" from Roots and Wings is based on her mastery of drone tones, and "White Wings," an elegant emotive piece utilizing a string quartet and bass recorder is contributed by Norwegian composer Oystein Sevag. Vocalist Kate Power and vocal ensemble Anuna offer more traditional Celtic balladry, and whistler Joanie Madden leads a group including noted accordionist John Whelan in an arrangement of "The Immigrant." Roundly refreshing, Celtic Planet is sure to be enjoyed by those familiar and new to the series. --Paige La Grone

Nice Music.......2003-08-08
This is a nice collection of relaxing celtic music. Ones to especially listen to are "THe Drowning Plains" and the one by Aiofe.
The best of the Celtic Twilight series, truly beautiful.......2002-11-26
I use this deeply touching music as easily to add a peaceful, misty background to my activities as to provide a focus for meditation. It is also one of my favorites for use with my Healing Touch work The selection of songs and mix of artists from different cultural backgrounds is very well done; each piece is uniquely beautiful, evocative of something different, from lingering sunsets over quiet lakes to the mysteries of walking through a heavy, enfolding fog between the hills to the welcome flicker of friendly fires at night. A very worthwhile addition to your music library.
Celtic Twilight Series the greatest.......2001-01-24
I have purchased all 5 of the celtic twilight series and each one is a 5star for me. This one is as good as all the rest. Soothing and relaxing. Very enjoyable music.
A Lovely "Lament".......2000-05-05
I heard "Lament of McCrimmon" on Live365.com and traced its source to this album. If the rest is as good as this, I will definitely buy it. It has real "tooth' unlike alot of "spacey" Celtic music.
Celtic taken to a brighter level.......1999-12-16
I was introduced to Celtic quite some time ago. This CD has incredible selections. I loved everyone of them. They are calm, soothing, and very relaxing. (track 13 is my favorite accompanied with bag pipes) This is definitely something a Celtic Music lover NEEDS to own. (don't' forget about the first 3)

All Through The Night.......2006-08-23
This CD is great. I work at a preschool and this is the music we play during nap time. It's beautiful, and it gets the kids to sleep! :-)
even if your kids outgrow this, you won't.......2004-10-06
I bought this on cassette tape when my first child was born. We have since gone through two tapes and I am now buying two CDs--one to give to my oldest, who is now seven, and one for my youngest, who is three. Aside from being wonderfully melodic, this collection imprints on your child's mind timeless phrases like "My love is like a red, red rose..." and--who knows? Maybe someday they'll look up who wrote it. Even for older kids, it is a welcome relief from "Jenny from the Block" etc.
No one tires of this CD.......2003-01-04
I am purchasing my second copy of this CD because it is loved so much in our house. I orginally borrowed it from the library when my daughter was a newborn and then bought my own copy. She is now six and the CD has finally worn out. It is played EVERY night in our house and I have bought it a baby gift many times since I discovered it.
The Best !!.......2001-04-03
I have been in love with this recording since it first came out. It soothed me AND it put the baby to sleep. What more can you ask from a lullaby CD? Her voice is wonderful and so are the songs. I put this album on when I need to slow down a bit.
My kids are grown and I still listen to it...........2000-07-24
I LOVE this cd. I checked it out from the library when my 5 year old was still a baby. It was such a hit I quickly made a copy. I would pop it on in the car and he would become quiet and still. When I had my daughter, three years later, I put the tape on at night before they would go to bed to unwind them. I have NEVER had a problem getting my kids to sleep and I thank this tape... Both of my children have out-grown lullabies but I am still very attached to it...The tape wore out so I am now buying the cd....
