Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Much of this album is improvised solo piano, with strong classical, jazz, and folk influences. There are performances of three works by other composers: Easter Parade, by the group The Blue Nile from Scotland, Time Remembered, by the late jazz pianist Bill Evans, and Musica Callada #1, by the Spanish 20th Century composer Federico Mompou.

The approach to the improvising on this album is very much tied to image and feeling, with particular attention to the melodic content. There is a range of moods on the album, from the more meditative and contemplative, to the more animated, and in some cases, dissonant.

The recording is highly detailed and intimate, which allows the listener to fully enter the world of the 9 foot Steinway that it was performed on.

This album doesn't sit easily in one category, such as Jazz, Classical or New Age. There are works here that would fit all of these categories, but the sum of the parts is more about speaking through the instrument with an individual voice.

Departures,Bob Gold,3919 Records,An intimate and detailed album of piano improvisations and performances of works by Bill Evans, Federico Mompou, and Paul Buchanan (AKAThe Blue Nile.)

3 out of 5 stars One Song.......2007-07-30

I wasn't to impressed with the cd as a whole, but I love the song worlds apart.

4 out of 5 stars Ok well ummmm..... yea.......2007-07-21

I love Silverstein and have for along time now so yeah I got this CD the first day it came out. I can't say that it is what I expected at all but its not complete garbage, discovering the waterfront is without a doubt one of my favorite CD's ever and well this doesn't really even touch the box of that one, but still its not that bad and I still think that its a must have ... just if you are new to silverstein don't get this so fast, stick with discovering the waterfront then if you like it get this one and their first one.

To put it short its a must if your a fan but other wise stick with the old stuff and if anything just take a sample of the CD to see what else they got

5 out of 5 stars Great Music, Misunderstood.......2007-07-16

I've been a fan of Silverstein for the past couple of years and I was really excited when I found out about this album. That is, until I read the crappy reviews it got. But, I decided to buy it anyway and in my opinion it's a good album. I think that the view that the lyrics are immature and childish is just plain stupid. If you know anything about the background for any of this album, you'd understand it a bit more. You see, Shane just broke off a seven year relationship because of his career and he transfered his feelings about it into this album. I don't know about the rest of you but if it were me I'd probably have written it the same way he did. Then again, how many of you are actually musicians who have to choose between your passion and the ones you love. Just think about that before you judge this album.

5 out of 5 stars dont listen to the other reviews..........2007-07-12

listen. im not a huge silverstein fan. but i love this album. dont listen to the other reviews saying that they sound like a high school band with " potential". this is a good cd. the sound is slightly different, but it still has the familiar silverstein feel to it. it really isnt as bad as the reviews say. sure the lyrics arent their best. but give 'em more credit. this is an awesome cd. no question.

5 out of 5 stars Review.......2007-07-09

When I heard that there was going to be a new Silverstein CD come out I waited untill it came out and I went to go order it.

But After I read all of the crapy reviews for it I wasn't sure I wanted to get it anymore.

After a while of thinking about it I just decided I would just get it anyways. And well, to make a long story short, I think the CD is awesome and definately worth the money. If you're wondering weather to buy it or not based on the reviews it's gotten I would recomend you to just but it and see for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars contains one of the greatest songs ever.......2004-11-06

and that would be fire engine red. just a word on this production debate; bob weston (sebadoh, mission of burma, june of 44) produced this album, and it's experimental. the vocals are super roomy and sometimes hard to hear, and everything is very natural and live sounding, much like the work of his bandmate steve albini. the production is indeed weird, but calling it a basement recording is ridiculous (personally i think it sounds great). anyway, this is a great album that defined emo back when it was good. emo used to be youthful, innocent, idealistic and genuine (which of course none of the modern emo is). boys life live dressed the part as well to drive all that home, with stand-by-me-esque outfits and hair, like the magazine boys life. every time i listen to fire engine red, even though it's 10 years later, i'm still in awe of how great it is, and many others i know feel the same way. so check it out.

5 out of 5 stars true.......2003-09-02

the feeling of being brought up, or maybe back to life with a simple song or album (in this case) is amazing. people worry to much about production and sound. ive been rightfully raised that music comes from the heart. if there is no heart, there is no (real) music. these boys have done simply that. they recorded there life, love, and heartfelt isolation on one recording. there only worry being not how well its recorded but how well they transformed ther hearts to sound...this is only love and depresion. these days are growing darker and darker if it was not for this record, i would of already closed my eyes for good. the long silence between songs, the trains in the background, the long interludes of crickets and whispering changeing into long emotional blasts of midwestern aggresion simply put- keeps me alive. this recording needs justice. it needs a real music lover. someone who understands not production but beauty and heart in underground sounds. much love and respect...

2 out of 5 stars Over-production? Gimme a break!.......2002-07-08

I don't understand what the other reviewer means by "over-production." This album is one of the worst produced I've had a chance to listen to in my life: the sound is like is was recorded in a garage. The only song worth listening is "Twenty Four of Twenty Five," which has a very Jeff Buckley feel to it. Other than this, there's nothing else in this album...

5 out of 5 stars Quality is Job 1.......2001-09-14

Emo is the current arena rock, complete with outrageous outfits, over-production, and songwriting that could be attributed to any damn teenager dealing with the frustrations of puberty.
Boys Life avoids this completely, yet still manages to be lumped into the category of "emo." The innovative dynamic and melodic structure separate it from the geeky, plastic glasses crowd. The production is low budget, as the liner notes proclaim, but the songs come across with more urgency and feeling than any sweater-clad geek will achieve. So I think this is a good record.

5 out of 5 stars One word...Amazing.......1998-12-03

This CD is totally amazing, the rythms and the tightness of this band are just plain cool. try it out. If you like bands like Mineral, Ethel Meserve, A Minor Forest, Roadside Monument, The Vehicle Birth, or Slint you should check them out, if your not into the bands I just listed, well still get it, plus the word is amazing so, that says enough right? yes!

well well this cd is quite good. some really nice trance, and some alright house. the mixing on the cd isn't so great, but then again you don't get this cd for it's mixing, but rather because of it's selection of traxx. and let me tell you, the track selection is very nice :) especially the beginning 3 traxx and the last 4 traxx. i just wish all global underground's were this good :)

5 out of 5 stars amazing music for an amazing price.......2001-02-21

this compilation of tracks from the first 6 underground cd's, is the cream of the crop of house and trance music, taken from the famous and appriciated global underground cd's. dj's like oakenfold, digweed, warren and the late tony de vit, all mixed by the forth to create 70 minutes of pure fun. the amazing price is because this cd is an apetizer to the whole underground label - which is too very recommended. all in all, this is the best value for your money possible!

Second full length from these Detroit super popstars! This music is all about fun & catchy sing along jingles. To steal use of one of their song titles: their music is "Sugar Sweet!" While there are plenty of "aww how cute" moments in the back-story of Grand Rapids, Michigans The Icicles, it would be a mistake to see them as mere DIY indie-poppers. It's true; The Icicles did sell handmade hats and mittens at craft shows to pay for the recording of their debut EP. Joleen, initially too shy to play with Gretchen in the early days, thought shed be of use to the fledgling group as a seamstress. But, The Icicles needed a keyboardist, and Gretchen liked how Joleen sweetly played "Blackbird" on the guitar when they first met as students at Grand Valley State University. So, with Joleen in place, the band was born. The group eventually found their way to the stage via the local pop shows brought to Grand Rapids by their future label boss, Drive In/Microindie's Mike Babb, and have stood out (in matching outfits) from day one. They are, at once, a perfect combination of surface and substance. The Icicles share with their contemporaries The Concretes and Camera Obscura (or with past favorites Heavenly, The Softies and Tiger Trap) the ability to create music that recalls the joyous pop sound of the great Sixties' girl groups, at the same time managing to breathe a certain maturity into this oft-visited genre. The tried and true themes of young love and youthful, naive exuberance are present, but tempered with realism and the wistfulness that comes through a grown-up knowledge of conflict and regret.

3 out of 5 stars Some promise here.......2007-05-25

At times this is too cute by half, like "Gedge's Song", which also illustrates they are not very accomplished yet, it sounds like the singer is reading the lyrics and her breath control is lacking. On the other hand the essential instinct for songwriting seems to be there, most of the songs are put together well and are pleasing to the ears, that's more than half the battle, the rest they can learn. I'd like to see them play a little harder, lose the country tinge and the silly lyrics ("Fall Day") and especially get more serious. Just because you're a girl band doesn't mean you have to be light and giggly. We'll see.

Definitely one of the best albums of 2004! If you like Coldplay, you'll love this one. Very, very solid album... put in your player and before you know it you're back at track 1.

    4 out of 5 stars Ain't by Numbers.......2004-02-24

Sanford Arms are another one of those bands who've drawn that line. Bands like American Music Club or The Pernice Brothers or The Sea & Cake or Luna...you know, the kind who record rich and luscious albums for early mornings, work days and wide-open Sunday drives. Then support those recordings with powerful, raw and gritty live performance in stinky rock bars. Yet, somehow, meticulously connecting the dots.

    It's cool.

Listen to their albums. See them play. It's a tradition of artists who don't color within their own lines.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Discovery.......2004-02-15

I recently heard a song or two by Sanford Arms on KEXP (I love internet radio!). I bought this record and it is amazing. It has so much depth and texture. I think they write really amazing songs. I have been listening to it non-stop since I got it on Tuesday. I recomend it to anyone who likes Mojave 3, The Flaming Lips, Coldplay, Wilco, Belle and Sebastion or Ryan Adams. I feel like I just made a new friend.

I know it was over 15 yrs ago...I was driving down the road one night, heard this mesmerizing song called Night Crossing. That's all the DJ said. I went through a lot of effort to find out more because I had to have that music. When I did find out the artist and title, I had to special order it. All these years later, I still have that cassette and the music is just as good, if not better. I should upgrade to a CD though don't you think!?
Maybe it's a little difficult to get a hold of, but it's worth it. Relax, unwind and leave the planet.

Listening to DEPARTURES is like floating up into the clouds and flying free! Every track has a peaceful, pleasurable divine sweetness to it that warms my heart. All of John's cds are gorgeous, but I feel DEPARTURES is the best representation of the wondrous beauty of the rare harp guitar. Why? Because the harp guitar is the main instrument and is backed delicately with different instruments; sometimes flute, tin whistle, violin, viola, cello, piano, celeste, gregorian chant, and soprano, alto, tenor and bass vocals--yet they don't distract in any way from John only enhance his playing. Just perfectly Lovely. Buy this while you can because it isn't easy to get. If you enjoy delicate, inspiring, instrumental music, you will not be disappointed. DEPARTURES is Exquisite. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Total running time is 45:30 but just hit repeat and you can soar as long as you want! ^_^
Here are the track listings (since they currently aren't viewable:)
      1 Tra Amici
2 Leaving Dun Laoghaire (you begin to float up...)
3 Wings of the Morning (you're up and beginning your journey)
4 Visit to Heaven (Flying full speed, you slow down while gasping as the beauty unfolds...)
5 Winter's Eve (through lush, exotic gardens to majestic, snow-covered mountains you keep soaring...)

      7 Night Crossing (...including you...)

5 out of 5 stars From Auspicious Beginnings.......2004-01-22

John Doan plays an unusual instrument usually called a harp guitar. This are instruments that use one of several method of adding an additional range of strings to the guitar's normal six. In Doan's regular instrument there are fourteen unfretted strings as well as those on the standard guitar neck. The result is an instrument of considerable sonority and the ability to play complex compositions that would otherwise be impossible. For Doan this isn't a gimmick - he is a master of the instrument and has been from the beginning. This is ably demonstrated by Departures, his first commercial release.

As a player composer Doan often chooses to work in ensemble, sharing the lead with the other instrumentalists, contributing to the fine contrapuntal style that marks his works. Thus, the spectacular complexity of a work like 'Wings of the Morning' or the many-sided arrangement of Tra Amici is partly due to Doan's ability with 20 strings and partly due to his ability to wring the best out of his fellow musicians. But as 'Leaving Dun Laoghaire' proves he can do a fine job even when left to himself.

Doan's work has a strong Celtic bent, although modern in it's approach. He makes little secret about this in his liner notes, much of the music was composed during a trip to the isles. He uses a variety of traditional instruments in that context, and does some interesting choral work in 'Visit to Heaven' (which, among other voices, includes the Monks of Mount Angel Abbey). It is rare that a first release by an artist is at quite this level of professionalism and quality. I find the album bears up well under continued listening - definitely a must for the those who enjoy instrumental popular music.

4 out of 5 stars Nasro, you are fabulous.a good CD but you can do much better.......2003-10-26

well, the CD was good but Nasro can do much better because i have been addicted to his songs for almost 10 years, Nasro is very good at using the guitar in his songs and that's what made this CD really good and sounds very nice, the big and famous exemple is " YA MRA " which will be a hit for all time.
Meeting Cheb Nasro was a big beautiful dream that i never thought it would come true, but we never know what may happen as long as we're alive. i did meet him and we talked for hours which made me see and know the other side of him that has always been dark and mysterious.....it will definitly take hours to talk about that special meeting, so i am just gonna move. what i can say is that Nasro by his nature is a very cool man, so gentle, very honest, open minded, quiet and undoubtedly romantic. professionally, he is a very good keyboard player, something that i have always believed in by just listening to his songs, he has that very special touch that u feel in his music and a brilliant unique style in playing the keyboard that i witnessed that night and completly fascinated me, delighted me immensely and kept me stuck to my seat, not moving at all like a stone.
i wanna say that i miss the old days of Rai music when Nasro gave the best as well as lmarhoum Hasni and the very beautiful strong voice of rai MOHAMED LAMINE whome Nasro appreciates and adores his dreamy vocals.
the real good talents are always visible and clear like the sun, there come times when clouds try to hide it, but it is always there and shows up in the end for the whole world to see.
